Their mother, Louise, was killed by the wave but they and their father were helped by a Phuket couple who took them in and then, because Phuket Airport was shut, drove them to Bangkok. Ben and Emily are planning to return to Phuket on July 20, and wanted to meet the couple to thank them properly. But all they knew
were the names “Upin” and “Pitchat”. This afternoon, just 15 hours after Ben first posted on Facebook, asked for help, the Thai couple have been identified as Pichet and Yupin Sengmuang. One of Pichet’s relatives spotted one of the many reports on the internet and called Khao Sod newspaper, which promptly ran a story online. Ms Yupin is originally from Nakhon Sawan while Mr Pichet

Mrs Yupin told the newspaper that after the tsunami, they met the Willgrasses, who were searching for the mother, Louise. They fed them and bedded Ben and Emily down and looked after them while the children’s father, Nigel, continued to search for Louise.

Patong clean-up set to move on from the beach
P
atong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsab revisited Patong Beach on Sunday (July 13) to check on progress in clearing illegal businesses off the beach and the public land behind it. Accompanied by Territorial Defence Volunteers and police, she discussed dealing with transportation businesses occupying public car parking spaces, particularly along the beach road. These include motorbike taxis, car and bike rental businesses, and black taxis. The responsibility for clearing these businesses from public parking lies with Kathu Police, she said – dropping the problem squarely in their lap. Now that most entrepreneurs have been cleared off the beach, she said, the focus will turn “soon” to transportation services on the beach road and Rat U-Thit 200 Pi Rd. A meeting is due to be held in the coming days to discuss the reorganisation of the transport services. A month ago, Mayor Chalermluk proposed reorganising the tuk-tuks and taxis into a hop-on, hop-off public transport system, with vehicles parked away from town and called in when needed or when it is their turn, in a system similar to the popular “baht buses” in Pattaya and Chiang
Revenge? Suriya Sintoke (right) presents her petition to Damrongtham Centre chief Prapan Kanprasang. Mai’s rot daeng (red trucks). The clean up has, of course not been popular with people who had “contracts” with the old Patong administration to use public land, paying handsome amounts of money for the rights. One of the most vocal opponents is Patong businesswoman Suriya Sintoke who was told on July 9 that she must tear down her restaurants on public land next to the beach in Patong. On July 10 she struck back,
visiting the provincial ombudsman’s office, the Damrongtham Centre, to lodge a complaint alleging that a resort near the beach, belonging to members of Mayor Chalermluck’s family, was illegal. She asked officials to check the building which, she claimed in her complaint, exceeded height regulations in Patong. The complaint alleged that in 2008 and 2009, the thenmayor Pian Keesin, approved the construction of a four-
floor building that was then described as a restaurant with accommodation. A couple of years later, he also signed the approvals for a fifth floor to be added to the building, which became the 81-bedroom Baan Laimai Beach Resort. The first application was made by Pakjan Kepsap and the second by Phuket Kebsap Property. But, Ms Suriya alleged, the company later added a basement and a sixth floor, but without the correct permits. Ms Suriya told Damrongtham Centre director Prapan Kanprasang, “I hope the process will be fast and fair.” Asked by The Phuket News if she was doing this to take revenge for the Mayor and the municipal team ordering her to pull down her illegal restaurants, Ms Suriya replied, “I have known about this situation for a long time and I thought the public should know about it.” Mayor Chalermluck said, “This is nothing to do with me. But I am a politician, so it is normal that some people may try to do things that affect me [negatively].” Attempts to reach Phuket Kebsap Property were unsuccessful. Tsunami saviours found Continued from Page 1 Nigel eventually discovered that she had died in the Ocean Shopping Mall in Patong. The couple say they took care of the children, trying to encourage them and explaining about the situation. Since Phuket Airport was closed, the family were unable to fly out, so Ms Yupin and her husband drove them from Phuket to Bangkok. Ms Yupin said that she was glad to know that the children – now grown up – would be coming to see her. She added that she and her husband helped them because they felt very sorry for them and she wanted to do her best to help them. She said that she would never forget the day. The couple are now, sadly, divorced. Mr Pichet moved back to Phattalung, but Ms Yupin is still in Phuket. Mr Pichet told The Phuket News this week, “I missed them and I am so glad they are coming back to see me. I really appreciate it. Ten years
ago they were just children. I have no idea what they will be like now. Please tell them that Thailand welcomes them back.” The Phuket News contacted Ben Willgrass with the news, and with phone numbers for the Yupin and Pichet. “We never expected quite the response we received, but it just shows once again how amazing the Thai people are.” Told what Pichet had said, “I’m really happy to hear that. If you speak to him again tell him we are both very excited to see him. “It looks like we have done it. Through the power of Facebook, I think we have found Yupin and Pichet. Emily and I couldn’t be happier. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped by sharing the post and by getting in contact. “We now ask for privacy for ourselves but more importantly for Yupin and Pichet. “Once again a huge thank you to everyone who has helped.”

DEMOLISHED: Nai Yang cleaned up B ars, restaurants, and grocery and souvenir shops on Nai Yang Beach were demolished on Monday (July 14) by Sirinat National Park officials backed by 100 Navy Marines. The structures, belonging to 11 owners and mostly ramshackle affairs of wood and tin with some concrete parts, were located mostly in the area just south of the entrance to the park, opposite the Dewa Hotel. They were ripped down with a Caterpillar excavator, and the resultant debris was loaded onto 10 large trucks. Officials said they had had many letters of complaint from people concerned that the owners were encroaching on and making profits from public land, and making a nasty mess in the process. Though the buildings taken down today were mostly makeshift places, many smarter, more solid structures along the beach – including tailor shops and hostels – are believed to encroach on public land and even on the beach itself. These, too, might face action in the near future. When The Phuket News visited the beach two days earlier, it was business as usual,

passport stamps] if a foreigner has stayed in Thailand too long [on tourist visas]. We will not let them in.” The impending clampdown has been a while coming, and has been applied in stages, with some Immigration posts ahead of others. On May 13, the then-national head of Immigration, Lt Gen Pharnu Kerdlarpphon explained to The Phuket News, “Lots of nationalities come to Thailand on tourist visas but they come to work. I really
want them to do the right thing, not to try to dodge around the law and evade taxes.” Immigration has also been looking carefully at holders of non-immigrant ED visas, which allow foreigners to stay in Thailand to study. Many of these are suspected of working, not studying. Immigration has also begun to apply blacklisting to people who overstay their permits to stay in Thailand by more than three months.
build extensions to buildings lining the Nai Yang beachfront. Monday’s demolition was part of the the Project to Restore the Forest, launched by the Department of National
Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, reflecting the policy of the National Council for Peace and Order to take back stolen public land. The previous day (July 13) the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy, Adm Narong Pipatanasai, who is also deputy chief of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), said that 89 land papers covering some 1,200 rai and encroaching into Sirinart Marine National Park can immediately be cancelled. Before taking a helicopter ride to look at the park from the air, Adm Narong – who was on a two-day visit to the island – met with Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) officials, to push forward the NCPO’s agenda “to take back Sirinart National Park” from encroachers. Samak Donnapee, the DNP’s director of National Parks, and Kittiphat Tharaphiban, head of Sirinart National Park, explained to the admiral about the many areas found to be encroaching on the park have only SorKor 1 papers, based on vague descriptions without any survey having been carried out. In
some cases the plots appear to overlap. Roughly half of the papers describe land that is in the park, while the other half describe land that is partly inside the park. Noting that there are some 3,000 parcels of land in Phuket with SorKor 1 papers, Adm Narong said that the Land Department should supply information about these, too. Adm Narong said the reorganisation of public space on Patong, Kata, Karon, Surin, Nai Thon Kamala and Nai Harn beaches had been a success, the Bangkok Post reported. Private business owners and vendors had been building illegal structures on Phuket beaches for decades, he said. “Now the beach areas are as beautiful and natural as they used to be and tourists and Phuket residents are pleased with them and want to keep it this way forever,” he said. “I must ask Phuket people to help keep the beaches free of encroaching structures as long as possible,” Adm Narong was quoted as saying in the Bangkok Post. eavy surf driven by strong monsoon winds on Sunday and Monday ripped chunks out of Phuket’s west coast, including the recently cleaned-up Surin Beach waterfront. The waves uprooted and toppled trees and undermined walkways along the coast, a reminder that not much that is man-made can stand in the way of nature. The south-west monsoon winds blowing bad weather in from the Andaman sea and across into the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure trough to the south of Vietnam and the edges of Typhoon Rammasun, now moving in on the Philippines, all caused intensifying bad weather across Southeast Asia Toppled trees at Surin Beach (above) and damaged promenade at Kata. AN EMPLOYEE WORKing on a coach that runs between Trang and Phuket was charged with theft on Saturday (July 12) after confessing to stealing two Mac notebooks belonging to a Chinese tourist the previous Wednesday. Police said Pathompong Charunprik, 29, confessed to stealing the computers, which were stored in a travel bag on the bus. He said he hid them and other belongings at a family member’s house en route to Phuket. The computers, a Macbook Pro and Macbook Air, both belonged to Ms Guo

The property has been recovered as evidence, and the suspect is being processed. The case follows a similar one last month in which a tour bus driver was arrested in Phuket for stealing the belongings of Chinese tourists who had stored their bags on the bus while they were on a boat tour. he deputy chief of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), Admiral Narong Pipatanasai, visited Patong on Monday afternoon (July 14) and was also slated to visit Surin and Naithon Beaches – until the weather came in and blotted out all plans. Adm Narong, who is also Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Navy, and has the “social psychology” portfolio in the NCPO, arrived at Patong Beach close to Bangla Rd as strong winds drove rain from the west. As he stepped from his car to be greeted by Patong Mayor Chalermlak Kebsab and some 200 officials and locals, many with bouquets of flowers, it seemed to get worse. After a few minutes of sheltering from the sideways downpour, the NCPO team decided to call it a day and headed for Phuket Airport. It wasn’t an entirely wasted

On Sunday (July 13) he visited the incinerator in Saphan Hin, for an update on its performance. Phuket was one of the first provinces in Thailand to get such a facility, and is therefore regarded as a model for other places to watch. The storm must have disappointed those who wanted to show off the improvements to Patong. Pol Col Jiraphat Pochanapan, Superintendent of Kathu
Police, told The Phuket News, “You can see that the regulation of parking is much improved. “Plus, we have three main check points, on Patong Hill, at Wat Suwankiriwong temple and in Kalim that show Kathu police are taking care of Patong.” Hearing this, an amused Vice-Governor Jamroen Thipayapongtada said, “Patong’s liked an epic movie. And the movie isn’t over yet.” But, he added, “I am glad
to see Patong Beach looking as it should – as it did, perhaps, 10 years ago.” Pol Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin, from Region 8 Police in Surat Thani, who has been leading the drive against mafia taxi activities, said, “I think the relevant officials cooperated well in all the actions here. “But one thing in Patong needs more consideration: the tuk-tuks. ROTTEN MUGGERS Snatch duo caught but more still at large n the latest arrest in a military government-ordered crime crackdown, Kathu police have detained two young men who are accused of attempting to mug a Chinese tourist in Patong using a motorbike and knife in the early hours of Sunday (July 13). Surisak Charoenchai, 18, of Patong and Worawit Pensuk, 20, of Kamala, were apprehended at a police checkpoint at about 1.50am near the football field off Taweewong Rd. Police at the checkpoint had been alerted that just 5 minutes earlier, a pair on a motorbike had attacked a Chinese tourist in front of the Blue Ocean Hotel. According to the police report, Ms Lian Dan was riding a motorbike at about 1.45am when the duo approached. Mr Worawit, riding pillion, allegedly used a knife to cut the woman’s purse straps free, but was unsuccessful in snatching the purse. The pair fled and are suspected of having driven to the Patong Bay Garden Hotel to intimidate

and attempt to mug other tourists, also to no avail. Police confiscated the suspects’ motorbike with Trang plates as well as a 5-inch-long knife, and charged the suspects with attempted robbery using a vehicle. Ms Lian and a Thai woman, Ms Surichai Namson, have identified the pair as the attackers. The police are also asking any other witnesses to this morning’s incidents to come forward and identify the suspects, who are being detained at Kathu Police Station. Though this particular duo have been arrested, ride-and-snatch robberies continue. At about 4:15am on Monday, an employee of Jaspal Tailor in Patong, Aporn Saengchum, 38, was robbed on the way to Patong from Samkong, by a man and a woman on a motorbike, who kicked her off her bike. She ran away but they caught up with her. The man pushed her over and kicked her in the head, then grabbed her bag containing two mobile phones, B5,000 in cash and two bank account books.
The pair then jumped on their bike and fled as passers-by stopped to help the victim. Police showed her mugshots, one of which she recognised. The officers said they believed the man had carried out a string of robberies but they were waiting for the Court to issue an arrest warrant. On Monday night (July 14), two Russian women were robbed by bag snatchers. The muggers pounced on Bang Tao Bay in front of Jaspal Tailor and got away with US$500, B2,000, and RUB1,500 in cash, along with Visa Electron card. Cherng Talay police said that the two women, whom they named as Anna Kochkova, 22, and Svetlana Glonebera, 31, were walking along the road just after 11pm when the bag-snatchers on a motorbike swept past, cutting the bag strap and taking the bag with them. Police and tourist police returned with the women to the scene to see exactly where it happened, and are checking CCTV footage to see if they can identify the robbers and track them down. Myanmar sends Thai boat crew for a swim TWENTY CREW MEMbers from a Thai fishing boat, who were captured last Friday (July 11) by a Burmese gunboat patrolling Myanmar territorial waters, were rescued from the sea after they were told, “You can go, but we keep the boat.” Adm Totrathon Kajitsuwan, commander of the Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet base in Phang Nga, told The Phuket News that the Thai crew’s fishing boat was assisted out to sea by an accompanying tug boat. He said the tug boat and fishing boat had breached Myanmar waters about 10 nautical miles west of Koh Chang (off the coast of Ranong). “Considering the strong waves yesterday, the crew didn’t think the Myanmar Navy would bother with patrols,” the admiral said. But when their tug boat was overwhelmed by the strong waves and sank, the Myanmar Navy patrol spotted them and quickly moved in to seize their fishing boat. The Thai seamen were all allowed to jump overboard and swim back to Thailand. Luckily for them, a friendly fishing boat and Thai patrol boat nearby came to the rescue, and brought the half-drowned crew safely to shore. “I doubt their boat will be returned. I will inform the Fisheries Association and radio station about this and warn Thai fishermen to avoid breaching the territorial waters of our neighbours,” the admiral said. “It’s very dangerous.” Sithicha Sirirat

bout 30 structures in Ao Por, on the “non-tourist” northeast coast of Phuket, were on Wednesday (July 16) demolished because they encroached on public land. More than 60 navy officers and and Territorial Defense Volunteers led by Panya Sampaorat, Mayor of Pa Khlok, along with local police, Harbor Department officials and the municipal officers checked the area near Ao Por pier and then brought in a backhoe and trucks to demolish and carry away the remains of the flimsy structures. Mr Panya said that Pa Khlok Municipality and relevant organizations were following the instructions in Order No 32 of the National Council for Peace and Order. Five days earlier, the municipality met with local people who signed agreements to move the structures themselves or allow them to be destroyed. The municipality promised

Many tourists visit the area on their way to take boats from Ao Por Pier to the islands in Phang Nga Bay, sparking a rush by local people to sell items to them.

The money is to be used to manage two areas of wetlands, Pru Pednam and Pru Tabkoei, to try to improve water supplies to local communities. In 1995, the OrBorTor reported to the then-governor of Phuket that the filling in of the two wetlands for expansion of
the airport was causing water shortages. The OrBorTor asked for a budget of B15 million to buy 10 rai of land and sink artesian wells to make up for the lost water. At that time, however, the AOT said it did not have that kind of money and, in any case, its lawyers had advised it that if the wells on the 10 rai came up dry, it could be in trouble with the Auditor General for wasting funds. But in 2005, the AOT set up a committee to reconsider the issue. This proposed that a pipeline be laid from Bang Niew Dam reservoir to the airport, and from there to Mai Khao. The cabinet agreed to
the AOT spending B26.8 million on the project, which has since been completed. At the signing of the agreement by Airport Director Pratuang Sornkham and OrBorTor Deputy Chief Executive Witthisak Singkala, the director of the AOT’s property management department, Nattha Intawong, said that the B3 million will go to management of the two wetlands and “any activities that will benefit the people of Mai Khao.” Mai Khao has seen a proliferation of resorts and property developments in recent years, which, along with population growth, have resulted in soaring demand for water. unsaner Kulwanich was a little alarmed at 10:30 on Tuesday morning (July 15) when she walked to the rear of her home in Talad Yai, Phuket Town and found there a large reticulated python, peacefully curled up, apparently asleep. Ms Bunsaner, 67, promptly called the Kusoldharm Rescue Foundation, which sent out its snake experts to persuade the reptile that this was not an appropriate shelter. They caught the four-metre constrictor and released it in the forest in Kathu, well away from human habitation. The experts theorised that the snake had arrived along a nearby klong, which was swollen from the recent heavy rains. One of them, Poonsab Saeung, said the Foundation was receiving quite a few calls to catch snakes in recent days. This was because the heavy rain over the past week had been saturating the reptiles’ habitats and they were looking for somewhere to stay until things dry out a bit.
The python is carried out of Ms Bunsaner’s home by rescue volunteers. The lump in the middle of its body is the meal it was digesting when it was found in the house. He added that although the snakes are released in an area far from human habitation,

Tourist boat safety checked MARINE POLICE OFFIcers inspected tour boats at Rassada Pier on Friday (July 11) to emphasise the safety of passengers, especially in the run up to the four-day holiday weekend. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that no boats were overloaded and that each boat had life vests for all passengers. Lt Col Chatchai Sakdee, who led the 20-man Marine Police contingent, reminded skippers to keep a careful lookout for weather conditions: waves offshore have been running as high as three metres.

One example is the luckless farang – presumably one of the very first who got caught in the net – who, back in the first week of May, received an unexpected earful from an Immigration official on the Thai-Cambodian border. As the official flipped contemptuously through page after passport page of triangular Thai departure stamps, he sighed wearily, before launching into a stern lecture. It ended with the bordercrosser – who had been anticipating a 15-minute saunter into Cambodia and back – being told to proceed to the royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh. crossing would “be sent to the detention room”. The days of Thailand being a Nirvana for feckless borderrun drifters – as well as other types, some worthy some not – are now a thing of the past. The kind of visitor with no visible means of support will now find Thailand less “the Land of Smiles” and more the land of “Sort your life out, instead of exporting your problems here.” But there is another kind of long-term visitor. The entrepreneurial and/or honestly hard-working kind. Numerous economies have benefited from the skills and work ethic of economic migrants – the US, the UK and, closer to home, Singapore and Hong Kong, come to mind – that perhaps the time has come for the Thai government to bring about positive change for them. The bureaucracy facing
foreigners who wish to work here is more onerous than those of most other middleincome nations. But skilled foreign manpower would benefit the Kingdom economically as well as bringing the kind of diversity that characterises vibrant economies the world over. As for that wastrel who was collared at the ThaiCambodian border, we learned that he got a job and a work permit to go with it. Just in the nick of time, he jests, when recounting his turnaround in fortunes. Thailand has always welcomed foreigners. Now that it has addressed the bottom end of the immigration issue, we look forward to a liberalization of business regulations for higher-quality foreigners. This would allow those with marketable skills and services to contribute to the Kingdom.

I am so happy and grateful that you found each other. Tsunami was also a word I had never heard of. I was working at the airport hotel in Bangkok. Moves to thwart labour abuses and trafficking S
ix one-stop service centres to issue temporary work permits for immigrant workers are up and running in Bangkok as part of the National Council for Peace and Order’s (NCPO) bid to curb human trafficking and labour abuse. Gen Sirichai Disthakul, chairman of the NCPO’s sub-panel on immigrant labour and the army’s chiefof-staff, said the six centres are expected to serve up to 500,000 immigrant workers who have until Aug 14 to register or face legal action. The centres enable foreign workers to obtain temporary work permits allowing them to stay in the country for 60 days while they are verified for permanent permits. Gen Sirichai urged employers to bring immigrant workers for registration as soon as possible. He added that one-stop service centres in 15 other provinces are expected to open in two weeks. Seven others are already open. The army officer on July 15 inspected registrations at

Hong Kong’s underclass to lose rooftop sanctuaries
T
heir precarious rooftop houses have offered refuge from an unaffordable Hong Kong property market, but some of the territory’s poorest residents face losing their makeshift homes as the government seeks to dismantle them. Perched on top of older buildings, the ramshackle dwellings may offer penthouse views in a city where space is at a premium, but the flimsy structures are frequently battered by typhoons and magnify oppressive summer heat. The government says they are too unsafe – and many of those who live in them agree. But with luxury apartments selling for more than US$50 million and a waiting-list for public housing stretching for years, they say there is nowhere else for them to go. “The rent is so high out there, how can we leave here? It costs at least several thousand (Hong Kong) dollars, we cannot afford it,” said Su Xingyun, whose family of four lives in a tiny two-room rooftop hut which is under a government removal order.

The rooftop dwellings provide homes to many of the city’s desperately poor. Photo: AFP Their chipboard and corrugated iron home is one among a dark warren of around 10 shacks on top of a 10-storey building in the working-class Sham Shui Po neighbourhood. Su, 46, moved from mainland China to join her husband, who had lived on the rooftop for 20 years, but would like a better home for her young daughters. She says she has been applying for public housing for several years. “During a typhoon I’m really afraid. I’m worried that
the roof will collapse because I can feel the walls shaking. It’s not safe for a family.” “We don’t have any privacy,” added Su. A tiny dank shared kitchen with a toilet and shower hose in one corner is where the whole family both cook and wash. Rooftop residents either own their homes or pay minimal rent to shady landlords. Upgrading to private accommodation can prove impossible, campaigners say. “The deposit, commission and first month’s rent for even
a tiny sub-divided flat can be more than HK$10,000 (US$1,300),” said community worker Angela Lui of local campaign group the Society for Community Organisation. Many rooftop homes were built in the 1950s, when there was an influx of immigrants from mainland China and few building restrictions. Now, it is an even mix of migrants and Hong Kongers who live there, says Lui. Hong Kong has one of the biggest “wealth gaps” of any city in the world. AFP
JAPAN’S NUCLEAR REGulator was on Wednesday (July 16) expected to approve the restarting of two atomic reactors, in a move likely to ignite fresh protest over returning to the technology more than three years after the Fukushima crisis. Nuclear Regulatory Authority officials were to make public their safety review of the Sendai nuclear plant in southern Japan, which would technically give its operator the green light to switch on the reactors – the first since Japan ushered in stricter safety guidelines last year. But Tokyo has agreed to a month-long public consultation period and winning agreement from local officials before giving a final nod, so an actual restart is unlikely before the autumn.
The review comes as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe tries to convince a wary public that Japan needs to return to an energy source which once supplied more than a quarter of its power, a push backed by business groups. The country’s nuclear reactors were switched off after the March 2011 quake-tsunami disaster triggered a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the worst atomic accident since Chernobyl. Abe has seen regular protests in front of his office over plans to restart reactors deemed safe by the agency. The regulator’s clearance for the Sendai plant, operated by Kyushu Electric, comes after at least one local assembly adopted a firmly worded resolution for the site to be decommissioned. AFP

Assad’s awkward ‘victory’ in a Syria haunted by jihadists
P
resident Bashar al-Assad on his inauguration on Thursday (July 17) is expected to play the role of “victor” while trying to win over war-weary Syrians and those fearful of jihadist advances. Analysts say Assad, who was swept back to power in a June 3 election slammed as a “farce” by the opposition, will also try to convince the West his regime is a bulwark against the extremist Islamic State (IS) which is sowing terror in Syria and Iraq. “Assad wants to consolidate his image as the victor” in the regime’s bid to crush a three-year rebellion, said Khattar Abou Diab, Paris-Sud University professor of international relations. The inauguration “will be a show of defiance against countries that demanded his ouster” ever since the outbreak of a popular revolt in March 2011, Abou Diab told reporters. Three years on, according to Bassam Abu Abdallah, an expert close to the regime in Damascus, the question of Assad’s ouster is “no longer on the cards”. Abu Abdallah, who directs the Damascus Centre for Strategic Studies, said: “Even the Americans, the Saudis and the Qataris (who back the revolt) are no longer calling for that.” A veteran opposition figure and member of the exiled National Coalition, Samir Nashar, said: “Bashar al-Assad continues to claim he is a legitimate president despite the victims and the

not leave power at any price.” For the past year, the antiAssad rebellion has suffered a
string of defeats on the battlefield. Opposition fighters lost control of bastions in the heart of Homs city, Damascus province and east of Aleppo city in the north. Regime troops have made advances around Aleppo in recent weeks, pressing a bid to besiege the rebels. The regime controls most of the coast, though the rebels have the upper hand in Idlib in northwest Syria and Daraa in the south, dubbed the “cradle of the revolution” that later morphed into a civil war. The mainstream rebels, however, have also faced defeats in eastern Syria, from where they have been expelled by IS, which last month proclaimed a “caliphate” straddling Syria and Iraq. Damascus, meanwhile, has been heavily reliant on a steady flow of fighters from Lebanon’s Shiite militant group Hezbollah and the unwavering support of allies Iran and Russia. The rebels, in contrast, say the have received practically no military aid from the West. Karim Bitar, director of the Paris-based International and Strategic Relations Institute, said “Too much blood has been spilled... Regardless of the military successes, (Assad) will never be able to restore his legitimacy in the eyes of much of the population, so what we’re really talking about is a Pyrrhic victory, won on the ruins of a country that will not accept the return of the status quo ante.” AFP
US ire over separatists’ ‘suppliers’ THE UNITED STATES ON Monday (July 14) accused Moscow of providing pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine with military equipment such as tanks and rocket-launchers. Washington also claimed Moscow was redeploying forces to the volatile border between the ex-Soviet states. “While Russia says it seeks peace, its actions do not match its rhetoric. We have no evidence that Russia’s support for the separatists has ceased,” the State Department said. “In fact, we assess that Russia continues to provide them with heavy weapons, other military equipment and financing, and continues to allow militants to enter Ukraine freely.” The allegations came as Ukrainian forces hunted for the crew of a downed military plane, after Kiev said the aircraft was “likely” shot down from within Russia, @thephuketnews
Weapons seized from pro-Russia separatists. Photo: AFP ratcheting up tensions between the two countries. In a detailed “fact sheet,” the State Department singled out a “deployment site” in southwest Russia, saying Moscow “continues to accumulate significant amounts of equipment” there and had roughly doubled the number
of tanks, armored vehicles, and rocket launchers at the location. Washington noted that “more advanced defence systems” have arrived at the site, which also houses artillery, and said it was certain Moscow was mobilizing additional tanks, those no longer in its active inventory, to the spot.
“We are concerned much of this equipment will be transferred to separatists, as we are confident Russia has already delivered tanks and multiple rocket launchers to them from this site,” it said. “Available information indicates Moscow has recently transferred some Soviet-era tanks and artillery to the separatists and that over the weekend several military vehicles crossed the border.” The State Department accused Moscow of redeploying new forces “extremely close to the Ukrainian border,” adding that Washington has “information that a significant number of additional military units are also in the process of deploying to areas near the border.” Washington said recruiting efforts for separatist militants were growing inside Russia and that the “Donetsk Peoples’ Republic” had set up an office specifically for this purpose in Moscow. THE ARMY’S IN CHARGE NOW
How to avoid trouble with dubious land titles Olaf Duensing Tax & Law Expert Duensing Kippen
N
ews about the actions of the military government in Phuket, mainly involving questionable land titles and illegal construction, has resulted in alarm among real estate developers and buyers. So far, the military is looking mainly into large commercial properties and developments, especially in and around Sirinart Marine National Park in the north-west of the island, but any individuals who have bought or are considering buying a house in Phuket should be aware of the legalities involved. As with any investment, a comprehensive due diligence should be performed before signing anything. Far too often, investors follow incompetent or non-legal “counsel”, who tell the investor that “the law in Thailand does not matter” because either “no such relevant law exists here,” or because “enforcement will never take place” (and who often have a financial interest in the contemplated transaction). As we have been reminded by recent media reports, such information is simply not true. Yet even those who have the legal facts explained by a competent lawyer sometimes choose to follow questionable
advice. In a land title investigation, it is not sufficient to look at the title document itself. In fact, all the land plots that have come under investigation in Phuket purportedly have what appear to be legally issued title deeds. What cannot be found by merely reviewing the title document is the title history, or how the title was “upgraded” to its current status. This investigation needs to be done at the land department by someone with knowledge of what to look for and what to do if something questionable is found. For example, there might be an improper underlying document. One example is the “flying SorKor 1”, in which an initial land occupation paper for undesirable land is illicitly applied to a desirable plot, and the land paper is then upgraded. In other cases, the land owner might not have possessed the land early enough to qualify for title (for example where the defining of the boundaries of a national park preceded the issuing of the land paper), or when the land area in earlier records might not agree with the area in later records. Such discrepancies can be (and unfortunately, all too often are) identified through investigation. Even if the land title is valid, an investor should also confirm that the target land can legally serve its intended purpose. This means checking the legal status of physical and
was lawful or unlawful. The revocation of a lawful administrative order is subject to compensation for damages arising from the revocation; the revocation of an unlawful administrative order is subject to compensation only if the recipient of the order was not aware that it was unlawful. Any investment in real estate is usually long-term. Slow to enforce does not mean no enforcement. Investors should keep in mind that there are laws in Thailand and the laws do, sooner or later, matter, as the current actions in Phuket, backed by the Army, illustrate.
The devil is in the details: Could your dream home be blighted by lack of attention to land-use laws? Only sign anything after undertaking due diligence. Photo: Chris Ford utilities access to the land, and the relevant land-use laws. The other major issue being investigated by the military government is construction on the land, which in certain areas of Thailand – including Phuket – is basically controlled by three laws: the Building Control Act (1979); the City Planning Act (1975), and the National Environmental Control and
Maintenance Act (1992). If a person wishes to build, modify or move a structure, advance permission is required under the Building Control Act. First, the applicant must submit documents such as construction drawings and specifications to the local administrative office. The responsible officer will schedule a site visit and will also verify the application
documents to determine if the contemplated structure is legally permissible. If all three laws have not been complied with, the building permit can be denied – or later revoked. The conditions for revoking an administrative order such as a building permit without appeal are strict, and depend on whether the original order

Thanet Traiwut: ‘The growth of the show is due to positive word-of-mouth.’ Mr Traiwut explained that on the Thursday and Friday of the event, he expects high attendance from B2B visitors, especially from Phuket’s stillbooming hospitality industry. At the weekend a more mixed crowd is anticipated, with a sizeable number of home-owners expected to rub shoulders
with trade visitors. “One of several fast-developing areas is technology for intelligent homes. Today it is possible to control your home remotely by means of your smartphone and so we will be showcasing the latest products and services in that sector.”
Among other “smarthome” developments are advances in CCTV and other security systems, which are seen as being most welcome on an island with its fair share of crime. Now that Phuket is a major player in the regional MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, Exhibitions) scene, the show will also feature state-of-the-art light-and-sound systems for use by convention and conference organisers, and also for homes and hotels. And what would such an exhibition on fun-loving Phuket be without the latest developments and products in home spas, swimming pools and gymnasiums? “These will occupy a large part of the show,” Mr Traiwut said. Class Act Media is a sponsor of the Architect & Engineering Exhibition.

TAT creates insurance for foreign visitors THE TOURISM AUTHORity of Thailand (TAT) has teamed up with local insurance companies to promote travel insurance service for foreign tourists, in an attempt to regain tourist confidence following the imposition of martial law. Juthaporn Rerngronasa, the TAT’s deputy governor for international marketing (Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas), said the authority will help promote travel insurance from three insurance companies – Muang Thai Insurance, Chao Phaya Insurance and Siam City Insurance. The offering will help foreign travellers who want to visit Thailand but cannot buy travel insurance from overseas insurers because the country is under martial law. Available from July 15 with a premium of B650, the insurance will have a B1million-cover to include accident, health, baggage loss or delay and airport closures. Assuming the plan is approved, tourists will be able to buy this insurance policy online. The three insurance companies said they will seek
approval from the Office of Insurance Commission before selling the policy. “This travel insurance will help attract more tourists from Britain, the US and Hong Kong to visit Thailand,” Ms Juthaporn said. Twenty-seven TAT offices overseas will promote the insurance policy. The TAT projected 2014 tourism revenue to be about B1.93 trillion, of which B1.23 trillion will come from foreign travellers and B700 billion from domestic tourism. It will ask the help of both international and domestic tour operators to sell the travel insurance to clients, especially in sensitive markets. Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, said the travel insurance idea is a good way to restore tourist confidence, especially in Europe. But travel insurance is just one factor. “I think government representatives should promote and convince tourists that Thailand is safe for them to visit,” he said. Bangkok Post
SINCE 2010, EMIRATES Airline has grown 71 per cent in capacity and has secured the title of the world’s largest international airline in terms of scheduled international passenger kilometres. operation in 1985, offer on a weekly basis a total of 5.7 billion available seat kilometres to 145 destinations. The A380 has been a successful addition to the Emirates fleet, with high seat factors over the past four years. Emirates has also just finalized an order for 150 Boeing 777Xs, valued at $56 billion at list prices.

THE TOURISM COUNCIL of Thailand were due to propose strategies to boost tourism at a meeting last Wednesday (July 16) with National Council for Peace and Order leaders. TCT vice president, Thanate Vorasaran, said in advance of the meeting that the council would present three strategies to the NCPO, including a recommendation to waive visa fees for tourists from China and Taiwan. The current visa fee is B1,000 for Chinese and Taiwanese tourists. These tourists would still have to obtain a visa from the nearest Thai embassy before travelling to Thailand, he said. “We will ask the council
to waive visa fees for tourists from mainland China and Taiwan ahead of the coming high season … These tourists are among the biggest spenders … Chinese tourists spent B43,000 per trip, which is very close to the level of spending by Japanese tourists,” Mr Thanate said. TCT will also suggest that seven provinces that each attracted more than one million international visitors last year be declared special administration zones. The seven provinces are Phuket, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Bangkok. Finally, TCT wants a tourism development com-
mittee to be reintroduced at the national level. Such a committee was suspended by the Yingluck Shinawatra government in 2013. The proposal to for m yet another committee to supervise tourism comes as a surprise considering that the TCT has the legal authority to speak on behalf of the tourism industry and recommend policies and projects for the government to consider. TCT said a reconstituted committee would resolve issues of tourism budget management, low confidence, and businesses that prey on tourists, such as illegal taxis and jet ski scams. TTR Weekly

THE BIG LIST Out of order! The word “frivolous” is the nicest way of saying just how crazy these lawsuits have been. None of these people could handle the truth!
Dry cleaning: When Roy L. Pearson was promoted to administrative judge in May 2005, he wanted to wear a nice suit for his dirst day at work. After the dry cleaners lost the pants of his favourite suit, Pearson demanded over US$1,000 (B30,000) to replace the entire suit. The Chungs, owners of the dry cleaning business, refused and Pearson came back two years later with an even bigger demand: US$67 million. The sum included legal fees, emotional damages, ten years of car rental fees to another dry cleaner, and the value of the pants. Pearson lost the case and was required to pay the Chung’s legal fees. Cookie housecall: In 2004, teenagers Taylor Ostergaard and Lindsey Jo Zellitti cooked a batch of chocolate chip and sugar cookies for their neighbours. They went doorto-door and dropped off the sweets with a sign that read: “have a great night”. When they got to 49-year-old Wanita Young’s home, however, she refused to answer and said she saw “shadowy figures” outside. The frightened woman spent the night at her sister’s but was then admitted to a hospital after experiencing stomach pains. Young sued the teens and was awarded US$900 to cover the medical costs. Fl y i n g s a u s a ge : While watching a Kansas City Royals game in 2009, John Coomer was hit in the eye after a hot dog was thrown by the team’s mascot Slugerrr. Naturally, Coomer sued the team and claimed that the flying sausage caused a detached retina in his eye which resulted in surgery. The hilarious trial resulted in a guilty verdict for Coomer after the jury heard that he had been to 175 Royals games. However, Coomer appealed the decision and the verdict was reversed. The judge during the appeal said, “the risk of being hit in the face by a hot dog is not a welll-known incidental risk of attending a baseball game.” Budweiser lovin’: Budweiser, a popular beer in the United States, are known for commercials featuring gorgeous and flirtatious women. This is probably why Richard Overton filed a lawsuit against Anheuser-Busch – the makers of Budweiser – for failing to help him attract beautiful women. The 1991 lawsuit saw Overton sue the company for US$10,000 as he claimed to have suffered emotional distress, mental injury, and financial loss. The case was later dismissed. Spilled milk: Couple’s sometimes argue in public places. For Amber Carson, this argument resulted in an unexpected pay day. In 2000, she was fighting with her boyfriend inside a Philadelphia restaurant when she threw her soft drink at him. Just 30 seconds later, she slipped and fell over the drink and broke her tailbone. Carson ended up suing the restaurant for US$113,000 and actually won!

Lightning baby still has static hair one year later
O
ne year after her mother was induced into labour following a lightning strike, baby Kimberly Gordon still has static hair and can’t digest food properly. During an Independence Day fireworks display in 2013, Ian Gordon and Kendra Villanueva – who was then eight months pregnant with Kimberly – were both struck by lightning and sent to the hospital just moments later. Gordon told ABC News
that the thunderbolt went through Gordon’s ear (which blew out his eardrum) and
News flush: Japanese toilet exhibition making a splash IN A COUNTRY KNOWN for its high-tech ‘smart loos’, a Japanese exhibition dedicated to what gets flushed down them and featuring a giant toilet slide is making a splash in Tokyo. Children wearing pooshaped hats slid excitedly down a chute into a lavatory standing five metres high, following the “Journey of Poo” at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. The aim of the exhibition, which also includes a chorus
of singing toilet bowls, is to educate visitors about sewerage, health and waste. An angry lavatory asked out loud what would happen if the world’s loos refused to do their jobs, encouraging toddlers to say ‘thank you’ after flushing. Children also lined up to make their own poop from plasticene, while giggling couples enjoying an unusual date also took the opportunity to sport the popular brown hats and slide down the toilet. AFP
Woman fights robber with cases of beer COULD THIS BE THE NEWest weapon against crime? A 70-year-old convenience store clerk in Oklahoma City in the United States used an unorthodox technique against a would-be robber: throwing cases of beer. Lein Nguyen, the clerk at the Best Stop Food Mart, was in the middle of her shift when a woman wearing a black hat walked into the store brandishing a gun and demanding the money behind the counter. “‘Give me money. Give me all your money. If not, I shoot you. I kill you,’ and she keep saying that,” Nguyen
told News9.com in Oklahoma. As the robber began beating Nguyen, hitting her with the handle of the gun, the cashier quickly grabbed a few cases of beer and hurled them at her attacker. The robber fled the scene without any cash. “ I throw at her and I think that’s why she run... I think I get lucky,” said Nguyen, who received medical treatment at a local hospital.

At the hospital, doctors induced Kendra into labour and gave birth to baby Kimberly who still has neurological damage from the incident. Other than her static hair, Kimberly cannot sit up or crawl and has trouble digesting food properly. Japan zoo makes wild fashion statement with lion-ripped jeans A JAPANESE ZOO HAS taken the catwalk to a wild new level, using some of its fiercest inhabitants to rip and claw jeans to a fashionably distressed look. The facility northeast of Tokyo has unveiled “Zoo Jeans”, styled by the fangs and claws of lions, tigers and bears.Zoo officials said the material held up well, all things considered. “We wrapped several pieces of denim around tyres and other toys. Once they were thrown into the enclosures, the animals jumped on them,” said zoo director Nobutaka Namae, adding that the pieces were later patched together to create the finished product. “The denim was actually
much tougher than we had thought, and it turned out nicely destroyed.” The idea came from a Tokyo advertising executive who wanted to give something back to the zoo where he spent time as a child, Namae added. Two pairs of jeans ripped by lions and a tiger-destroyed version are being auctioned on the Internet with proceeds to be donated to the zoo and the conservation group WWF. As of Monday, bidding on the tiger-torn denim had soared to 121,000 yen (B38,000). They will be on exhibit at the Kamine Zoo – along with a bear-savaged version – until next week. AFP

Nostalgia for Old Asia Hands
Rainy-day reading for old-timers with a yearning for yesteryear Nick Walker editor@classactmedia.co.th
S
outheast Asia has been changing at a dizzying pace this century, resulting in no shortage of expatriates of a certain age, missing (and waffling about) the region of yesteryear, albeit often through rose-tinted spectacles and over a libation or three. If you belong to this club, here’s a selection of novels that will have you notalgia-tripping through the pages. And if you don’t, chances are – being a Phuket resident or visitor – these books – all set in our region – will enthral, nevertheless. (The Great Phuket Novel has yet to be penned – at least in English – hence the omission of any such title here.)
The Honourable Schoolboy By John le Carré (1977)
The Honourable Schoolboy, set in edgy cold war 1970 s Hong Kong and assorted South-
east Asian locales, has endured the decades well. Telegrams and bat-wing junks may have gone the way of the Lao monarchy, but cold-blooded treachery, revenge and greed will always be with us. The Honourable Schoolboy is actually the second novel of Le Carré’s epic Karla Trilogy. Preceded by Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and followed by Smiley’s People, it can nevertheless be enjoyed as a standalone read. The action starts “in the dusty little corners where London’s secret servants drink together”, but by page three we’re already in Hong Kong, from whence the plot meanders its way around Southeast Asia like a furious but uncertain typhoon, taking in somnolent capitals Vientiane and Phnom Penn, and Cambodia’s second city of Battambang, the Isaan region of Thailand, and “Red China”, before returning to the South China coast. The Honourable Schoolboy is no casual page-turner: it’s densely overplotted, crammed with keenly observed details of another age, and it requires some grasp of the dynamics of East Asia’s Cold War experience. Read The Honourable Schoolboy if you like your spy thrillers retro in flavour, close to home, and of a time when, if you wanted to go to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Aeroflot was the only way in.
The Year of Living Dangerously
By Christopher Koch (1978) The Year of Living Dangerously is as spicy and filling as a bowl of Javanese curry that has had a bit of everything tasty thrown in the pot. Evocative travelogue, fast-paced thriller, political commentary on the most perilous chapter in the story of post-independence Indonesia, love story – this novel has something for everyone. The novel follows a story-arc that spans the coup attempt by Communist rebels against Sukarno’s dictatorship and the uprising’s savage aftermath. The lead character is Australian television correspondent Guy Hamilton, an affable and ambitious rookie keen to get his first scoop. His love-interest is a delicate English rose from the British Embassy. Koch’s beautiful prose, which effectively captures the mystic moodiness of Indonesian society, and evokes the kinetic hum and perennial aromas of Jakarta: the roar of traffic and diesel fumes, clove cigarettes, vapourising chicken fat and sambal – the equatorial miasma that visitors find both intoxicating and unnerving. One of his most powerful metaphors the comparison of Indonesia’s downtrodden to wayang puppets of that great Javanese cultural tradition, shadow puppetry. Correspondingly, this drama looks at the shadows that flit between loyalty, friendship and betrayal. Koch visited Indonesia in the 1950s and 1960s while he was a journalist and this book is in part a keenly observed account. Now regarded as one of the most important novels set in post-colonial Southeast Asia, it was banned in Indonesia until 1999. Koch co-wrote the screenplay for the superb 1983 film adaptation. Directed by compatriot Peter Weir, the film starred Mel Gibson as Hamilton, and did justice to Koch’s most enduring work.
Time for a Tiger
By Anthony Burgess (1956) Judged by The Times of London to have been one of Britain’s 50 greatest postar writers, the late Anthony Burgess’ most famous novel remains his 1962 dystopian shocker, A Clockwork Orange. But Burgess also wrote the definitive novel of expatriate life in 1950s Malaysia, or Malaya as it was known pre-independence. Set during the dog days of British colonial decline in Southeast Asia, with his debut novel, Burgess found himself following other Britons who wrote stories from the tropical reaches of the Orient, such as Kipling, Conrad, Maugham, Orwell,
and Greene. Burgess – like Orwell, who had a reasonable grasp of both Urdu and Burmese, and Kipling who spoke Hindi – took the trouble to learn the language of the society he depicted. A renowned multiple-linguist, Burgess spoke and wrote excellent Malay, hence the authenticity and cross-cultural sensitivity of the lively Time for a Tiger. The action swirls around a distinctly peculiar quartet: Victor Crabbe, a history teacher at an elite school on the Malay peninsula, Crabbe’s wife Fenella, Nabby Adams, an alcoholic policeman, for whom it is always time for a libation, and Alladad Khan, Adams’ subordinate, who falls in love with Fenella. Time for a Tiger is very much a tale of its time. Crabbe is trying to sniff out what he perceives as a communist ring in the school, at a time when the colony is rocked by a communist insurrection. Tense local politics are skilfully dovetailed into the generally comedic proceedings. The observant Burgess crafted an enduring “old Asia hand” novel, which deserves bookshelf space with like-minded perennials such as The Quiet American and Burmese Days.
Saint Jack By Paul Theroux (1973)
The prolific American wandererscribe wrote Saint Ja ck i n 1972 , three years before the publication of The Great Railway Bazaar established his reputation as one of the world’s premier travel writers. And the observational skills so evident in Theroux’s best-known work also play a large part in Saint Jack’s salty charm. Over the years, Theroux has intimated that he was kicked out of Singapore for being critical of its government. But in reality, the reason was more mundane – money, or the lack of it. In 1972 he and his family moved from exotic Southeast Asia to bucolic Dorset in southwest England. It was here that Theroux relived his steamy Singapore sojourn by writing what is considered to be one of his best early works. On its 1973 release, Saint Jack received high marks for its keen and authentic sense of place. Today’s Singapore is unrecognisable from the sleazy backwater depicted here, but the storyline has endured well. We are somehow drawn into siding with a faintly familiar kind of western scumbag of the expat variety. Jack Flowers is a 53-year-old American barfly going to seed in the tropics. During his short official working day, he works for a ship chandler, but after dusk he morphs into a lowlife tour guide who steers western tourists and seamen to the Orient’s fleshy delights. When Jack opens his own bordello, his timing is perfect; suddenly Singapore is swarming with US serviceman on R&R from the Vietnam War. thephuketnews

Sensitive plant in flower. Photo by Jeevan Jose
ENVIRONMENT 3
Three steps: At left, the untouched plant. Centre, a set of leaves closes up after being touched gently. Right, the whole lot collapses after more robust handling causes all the leaves to fold and the stem to collapse.
A touchy matter – how do you do it? GARDEN IN SIAM Alasdair Forbes execeditor@classactmedia.co.th
So, pretty-ish flower, but thoroughly invasive and prickly too, so not much use to man or beast. And no hallucinogen.
T
he Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) should be a plain weed. It gets everywhere, sprouting in your lawn or anywhere there’s a bit of sun. It straggles across the ground, putting out more branches in all directions than your typical bank in a bid (like your typical bank) to enlarge its territory. It has quite a pretty flower, but don’t for heaven’s sake let it go to seed or your whole garden’s going to go sensitive. Off with its pretty head! It also makes itself less than popular by being quite spiky. We’re not talking about anything as spiky as cha’om (Acacia pennata), but stand on the sensitive plant with bare feet and you’ll know about it. And it has, as far as I know, no discernible food value, unlike the cha’om, which Thais mix with egg to make an omelet. It doesn’t even offer the delights of its cousin, Mimosa hostilis, or jurema, which contains a powerful hallucinogen. So, pretty-ish flower, but thoroughly invasive and prickly too, so not much use to man or beast. And no hallucinogen. In Thailand, it’s known as Bai Yala, or Yala grass; Yala is one of the three most southern provinces in Thailand, which have given (and continue to give) successive Thai governments serious headaches. The three provinces are, it might be said, a prickly problem. Wonder if that’s how this weed got its name? The only thing to do with it is pull it up. Uproot it. But that’s where things get interesting. The Sensitive Plant has a remarkable ability. Grab hold of it, or simply get rough with it, and it seems to disappear. Take a look at the patch of ground in the pictures below, before and after I stood on it. About two seconds separated these two pics. Of course, if you take a closer look you’ll see it’s still there. But its leaves have all folded up, and what was once a pert plant smiling up at the (admittedly, these days, rather soggy) sun has collapsed to ground level. If you approach one of these plants more gently, and touch a leaf, you’ll see the leaf close up. A bit harder, and the other leaves on the same stem will also close. Still harder, and suddenly the whole stem will sag, swiveling down abruptly from a node. You can see the three steps in pictures above. So how does it do this? I spent hours trawling the Internet, and although I found plenty of scientists telling me that their research showed the opening/closing of leaves and collapse/revival of stems was basically hydraulic – changes in fluid pressure – I could find no one who could explain how plants such as this “sense” movement and translate this into action. Here’s the Wikipedia entry, for example (there are lots more like this): “When the plant is disturbed, specific regions on the stems are stimulated to release
Where’s it gone? The sensitive plant before (left) and after being stepped on. @thephuketnews
chemicals which force water out of the cell vacuoles and the water diffuses out of the cells, producing a loss of cell pressure and cell collapse; this differential turgidity between different regions of cells results in the closing of the leaflets and the collapse of the leaf petiole.” Which is pretty much what I said, isn’t it? It doesn’t explain how “specific regions on the stems are stimulated”. Beware of scientists deploying verbs in the passive voice (“are stimulated”) – it probably means they can’t explain but they don’t want you to know that. Which doesn’t stop them making up some fancy names for the process. It’s called seismonasty or thigmonasty. Which has nothing to do with size. Or thigs, come to that. Or anything particularly nasty. Go figure. Here’s another web explanation of how the sensitive plant does it: “Mimosa
pudica is a plant with compound leaves that has attracted detailed investigation. It appears that contact or injury causes leaflet deformation that in turn triggers an action potential. The action potential travels through the plant until it reaches a pulvinus at the base of the leaflet or petiole.” So there we have it: The leaflet bends and “it appears” that this triggers the change of fluid pressure in the leaf base or stem. Yes, but HOW does it trigger it??? What we get is more weasel words – “it appears that…” Oh, and another thing: how does it know when danger’s passed and it can unfold its leaves again? Is it on some kind of timer? A built-in stopwatch, perhaps? What? Come on! Stop weaseling and tell us how it does it, or admit you don’t know. Six tips before you leave home to teach in Phuket ASK THE AJARN
Eric Haeg info@teflcampus.com
Employers want to pick up the phone; schedule an interview and get that done as quickly as possible.
W
You need to be here
Put yourself if an employer’s shoes: I can hire someone who looks good on paper but whose skills remain to be seen, or I can hire someone who’s qualified and is ready to prove their skills in a demonstration lesson right now. As much as no one wants to take the risk of moving to Thailand without a job, employers don’t want to risk committing to a teacher they’ve never met.
Get a local phone number
A teacher trainer at TEFL Campus and Phuket resident since 2004, Eric welcomes all questions regarding teaching English in Phuket at: info@ teflcampus.com
Become a legal motorbike driver
e all learn from our mistakes, but no one wants to learn from them once they’re half-way around the world and a hefty shipping fee away is a piece of paper you left back home. If you’re thinking about teaching English in Phuket, here are six great tips before take the plunge:
Communicating via email isn’t going to suffice. Many schools don’t have Westerners handling applications and the vast majority of Thais are either too embarrassed about their English-language writing skills, or they just don’t have time to write emails. Employers want to pick up the phone; schedule an interview and get that done as quickly as possible.
Expect the unexpected
From unintelligible directions to incomprehensible English, be prepared for anything. If your interviewer is Thai, don’t expect tough questions but do expect last-minute requests for demonstration lessons, and to be told you’re starting the next day. Administrative forethought is nonexistent here and when schools need teachers, they need them now.
Bring your documents
This tip is all over the internet, yet applicants arrive every day without required documentation. If you have a degree, bring the original and sealed transcripts – there are no alternatives to taking this step. Also, obtain copies of your criminal background check; schools here will almost always ask for one.
Following on from our first tip, you’ll need to travel around Phuket in order to visit schools. Unless you can afford daily taxis, you’re ready to walk in Phuket’s heat and rain, or you can put down at least US$2,000 on a barely-functioning car, you need to rent or buy a motorbike. You’ll also need travel insurance and unless your international driver’s license has a motorbike endorsement – most insurance providers won’t cover accidents. And remember: once you get your visa and work permit, you’ll need to get a Thai driver’s license.
Hold off on long-term accommodation
One thing we tell trainees who want to teach English in Phuket is that they shouldn’t commit to accommodation until they have a job and know where they’re working. This saves time and money, and it lessens your chances of a road accident. Also, the best places aren’t advertised. Teachers will usually know someone who’s renting a nice house at an affordable price. Rent an apartment for a month or two and then commit to a one-year lease. Oh, and one final tip: it’s pronounced, ‘Poo-ket’, not ‘Foo-ket’. Don’t “phorget” it!

H
i and welcome. The two questions that I get asked a lot while I am out and about teaching are, how do I tone my stomach and how can I tone my arms? Where I grew up, in Australia, we have very serious medical terminologies that are used for these two common “problem” areas. 1. Bingo wings – otherwise known as untoned upper arms 2. Love handles – otherwise known as “muffin top” or untoned midsection.
Kim White is the owner of Sala Samadhi. she offers authentic Hatha yoga instruction for private and group sessions. Contact: www. mindbodyyogasystem. com or 086 276 9174. The opinions and advice contained in this column are those of the author only. The Phuket News is not responsible for the outcome or results of following any advice in any situation.
Never fear! This month’s asana Makara Phalakasana, the elbow plank, is a one stop assault on both these common problem areas and does not require any other equipment but your own body and the willingness to use it! Your body is your “weight bar”. You made your body, you should also be able to lift it. Let’s look at the benefits of this quiet achiever: Strengthens the core, shoulders, arms and chest Stretches the shoulders, arches of the feet, calves and hamstrings Tones the abdominals and “glutes” Helps to relieve stress and depression. Calms the brain and helps relieve stress and mild depression Helps prevent osteoporosis To start enjoying the benefits of this asana
simply follow the steps below: 1. Start in a push up position, shoulders on top of your wrists. Lower down to your forearms, one arm at a time. 2. Place your elbows beneath your shoulders with your forearms and palms flat to the mat. Roll your shoulder blades onto your back. 3. Push your heels back and roll your inner thighs inwards and upwards. Keep your
core engaged and roll your tailbone in the direction of your heels. Your eye gaze is in between your hands. 4. Breathe steadily and hold for 30 seconds to one minute. Then lower your knees and hips to the ground. Repeat twice. Happy stretching See you next month metta kim oxo

Is fasting the ultimate pathway into body, mind and spirit equilibrium? HEALTH MATTERS Sarah Nockles sarah@santosaphuket.com
Eating three times a day means taking on, almost without respite, the work of assimilation.” ― Adalbert de Vogüé
T
he concept of fasting is a practice dating back thousands of years, not just for its profoundly positive impact on good physical health, but also that of the mind and spirit. To me the ultimate pathway into equilibrium between the integral facets of our being, is fasting and purification. Having spoken about the intrinsic connection between our body, mind and spirit, and working at a center who bases its philosophy on this synergistic connection, I felt it only fitting to celebrate my recent milestone birthday, by undertaking our strongest and most challenging program, a 21 day Full Fast. I wanted to share some insights on what I can only describe as a deeply beneficial experience, and one which I feel has bought an incredible sense of balance and perspective. The body is an incredible machine, and by starving the cells through fasting, we gain a true insight into just what a complex matrix of systems we operate on. We are taught from an early age not to deny ourselves, but in ‘nourishing’ according to a pre-prescribed consumption timetable consuming, we are in fact denying the opportunity to purify and rejuvenate on a cellular level.
Toxins exodus: When cells are starved, for a period of time they enter into survival mode, where deep repair is able to take place. Fasting is often accompanied by a healing crisis, which is when toxins start to leave our body more quickly than we are able to comfortably process them. For the chronically ill, this can mean a temporary flair up, or for those in generally good health it can present a time when old injuries become painful again, or when symptoms such as fever, dizziness, headaches and nausea temporarily occur. This is usually short lived, and a ‘faster's high’ follows, complete with an increase in energy, a feeling of lightness, unparalleled clarity of mind and improved function in digestion, metabolism and sleeping patterns abound. It proves that we need less than we think in order not just to survive, but to flourish.

Mental state: When the ‘faster’s high’ hit me, it caused me to think very deeply about just how much time we spend thinking about food, preparing it, deciding when to eat it, and on consuming it. In fact, our lives are governed by meal-times, and our minds train our bodies on when we should eat, and what is appropriate to eat during that period. This is not necessarily a negative thing, especially if we are being mindful and making a concerted effort to nourish rather than just fill ourselves each day. However, when consumption is taken out of the equation all together, it is amazing to realize exactly how much time and energy is left to focus on other things. What if we listened a little more carefully, and allowed ourselves the opportunity to feed our own unique bio-chemistry by our own set of rules? On a spiritual level, it is incredible that when taking out this external stimuli, we are left with so much time and energy to focus elsewhere. It is this that makes fasting such a cathartic and emotionally healing time. Having the space to reflect and think allows an incredible journey of self-discovery to take place whilst all of the physical healing works away in the background. It is a time when much emotional toxicity is discarded,
and our concept of time completely shifts. This is largely due to the brain. One of the secrets of optimal health and vitality is the ability to operate from the ‘rest and digest’ parasympathetic nervous system (PSNS), rather than the adrenaline-fueled ‘fight or flight’ sympathetic nervous system (SNS). SNS is fuelled by caffeine, alcohol, spiking blood sugar levels, stress and anything that causes our heart rate to increase – it is the breeding ground for chronic disease. The gentle PSNS is polar opposite in function – it slows our heart rate to conserve energy whilst our body activates the intestinal and glandular activity necessary for digestion. For optimal health we want to operate predominantly on our PSNS, and fasting causes this switch to happen. When the switch is made, true rest and relaxation are able to occur, and health is restored. When our alpha waves are slowed and theta waves in-
crease, balance is found and psychological issues such as neurosis, a decreased focus on the superficial and feelings of being grounded and stable occur.
Blissful outcome: The natural high that comes with fasting is a profound one. Time and time again, we hear that it is “the best I have ever felt in my life.” It is hard to let go of these feelings, and the true reset is a perfect foundation for making healthier choices going forward. The purified body is able to send signals about what does and doesn’t work, and establishing the mind and body connection through fasting allows us to pertinently listen once more. So at the end of 21 days, how do I feel? Honestly, that I want to keep going! But sensibly, I won’t. I will however, be adopting intermittent fasting every week going forward and I know that in doing this, I will be able to keep these feel good vibes going, and increase my health and vitality exponentially. The statement ‘less is more’ seems more profound than ever!

I wanted to open something different for people. This style steakhouse is my favourite since it is fun but food is always good and always have large portions.
P
huket is full of hidden gems and hungry island diners love to scavenger hunt. On my recent hunt I checked out BBQ Ribs Texas, an American western-style restaurant on Yaowarat Rd, run by Nantachart “Richard” Julaphadung. The décor is typical southwestern Americana, with framed photos of Clint Eastwood, banners of American football teams, and tin posters of cowboys quoting famous movie lines. While the eye catches everything hanging on the walls, the stomach churns with each turn of the menu page: everything from steaks to lasagna to sausages and, of course, BBQ ribs. Richard, who has worked on cruise ships for nearly a decade, is a well-travelled Thai restaurateur who took a liking to the steakhouse culture of the United States. This is why he opened the place in 2007, six years
after opening his first venture – Samkong Steakhouse (now, BBQ Phuket). With stints working in kitchens Alaska, Miami, Boston, New Orleans, and a host of other places, Richard came back to Phuket to share his love of the food. “When I opened both restaurants, there was not much here in Samkong. I wanted to open something different for people. This style steakhouse is my favourite since it is fun but food is always good and always have
large portions,” he said. This time out, I tried out the BBQ Ribs set with chicken and smoked sausage. The meal also comes with a side of french fries, toast, side salad, corn on the cob, beans, and potato salad – we’re going to need a bigger plate. The western soups are some of the cheapest on the island with a price tag of only B30. Cheeseburgers sell for under B100 and there is even a Mexican, Italian and pizza menu. In addition, they serve breakfast with homefries that are cooked with bacon and onions for about B100. The menu even has deer and ostrich steaks for B280, served with french fries and salad. “Since beginning, we offer everything. Anything you want, we can pretty much make it,” Richard said. BBQ Ribs Texas, open from 7am to 12pm and 6pm to 12am. Located at 248/19 Yaowarat Road, Samkong, Phuket.

Heart of the Middle Kingdom By Karnjana Karnjanatawe, Bangkok Post
A
simian warrior with supernatural powers acquired through Taoist practices, the Monkey King is the much-loved hero of the Chinese literary classic Journey to the West. Most recently portrayed in a Hong Kong fantasy flick, the immensely strong protagonist — Sun Wukong in Mandarin — rebels against the Jade Emperor of Heaven and the character may well have been inspired by a real-life creature, the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana). This very distinctive-looking creature is now found only in a handful of forested areas in the Chinese provinces of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi and Hubei and one of the few places that visitors can see the animal at close range is in Hubei’s Shennongjia National Park. “The golden snub-nosed monkey is a rare species and is protected by the Chinese government. The importance of its existence and protection is on a par with that of the [giant] panda,” explained Lee Jun, who acted as our guide during a recent visit we made to Hubei, a province in the easternmost part of central China. “Anyone caught hunting these monkeys can be fined up to 100 million yuan [about 522 million baht] and face a prison sentence of up to 20 years,” he added. Listed as an endangered species and included on the “red list” maintained by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), it goes by a variety of names including Sichuan golden-hair monkey, snub-nosed leaf monkey, snow monkey and orange monkey. The fur on its body and limbs is actually a yellowish-red while its face is hairless and can look pale blue under certain light. It varies in height between 50 and 70cm, has a long tail and lives in montane forests between 1,400 and 2,800 metres above sea level where snow cover can last for up to six months of the year. It eats seeds, fruit, tree bark, insects and small vertebrates and the IUCN estimates that there are now only 16,000 of them left in the wild. “About 1,600 of them live in this national park at present,” Lee told us,
adding that this figure was a substantial improvement on the situation a few decades ago when the local population numbered only about 300. This small waterfall in Hubei is a popular bathing spot for snub-nosed monkeys in the locality. As part of Beijing’s ongoing protection efforts, a team of rangers has been specifically assigned to take care of the snub-nosed monkeys in this park, feeding them daily with fresh fruit like apples. “Food is one of the most important factors in maintaining numbers, especially during the winter when the whole mountain is covered in snow. Feeding helps more of the monkeys survive,” Lee noted. Before being allowed in to see the monkeys up close, we were told that there are two simple rules that all tourists need to follow. First, we had to don military-issue camouflage jackets to cover our own upper garments (presumably so that our garb would look like the uniforms worn by the park rangers, to which the animals have become accustomed). The second regulation was that the monkeys could only be fed peanuts that had been bought from park officials; this, our guide said, was intended to protect the monkeys from digestive problems or even poisoning from unsuitable foodstuffs. A wooden walkway fenced on both

An entrance to Hubei’s Shennongjia National Park, adorned with flags in fesrtive colours. sides leads directly from the visitors’ car park to the designated viewing area. A five-minute stroll along this brought us into the fringes of a pine forest where I had my very first glimpse of a snubnosed monkey. It was perched nonchalantly on the branch of a tree overhanging the walkway, munching on what looked like a piece of bark. Not far from me was a boisterous group of Chinese visitors. They began shouting and laughing and screaming when a monkey that they had been pos-
ing for pictures with got chased away by another, much bigger specimen. A troop of monkeys, perhaps a family group, could be seen on the other side of a small stream, but they were in an area into which visitors were not permitted to venture. We had been instructed not to stray from the wooden walkway, but several of the monkeys saved us from temptation by coming quite near to us. I counted five scampering along the top of the fence or just sitting on it. Shennongjia covers an area of 769.5km² and the main attractions, according to Lee, are unusual rock formations (he called them “stone forests”), a wetland area home to many varieties of bird and larger species of resident wildlife. There have even been sightings here, he claimed, of that mythical hairy creature, the Yeti (what some term Bigfoot). Apart from its abundance of unspoilt nature, Hubei also has a number of historic and cultural attractions. A visit to Hubei Provincial Museum in Wuhan, the provincial capital, was an entertaining way to spend a few hours. According to our guide, the autumn months of October and November are the best time to visit Shennongjia. The park is at its most beautiful at this time of year, he explained, as the leaves on all the deciduous trees change colour, creating impressive canvases in many shades of yellow, orange and red.

Leading from the heart Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana speaks on the topic of sustainability
Steven Layne editor3@classactmedia.co.th
Phuket’s vote is here ...They cannot ignore the voice of the people.” And it is these people – those who have studied, worked and lived here for generations – who deserve priority in terms of infrastructure, especially public transport.
T
hough it is the likes of Patong, Kata, Karon, Kamala, Rawai and even Chalong attracting most of the international spotlight onto the island, none of these are Phuket’s “core”. Such locales are all Phuket’s organs and arteries – no doubt essential mediums of lifeblood for the province’s overall livelihood – but satellite communities all the same. For it is Tesaban Nakhon Phuket, Phuket City Municipality – the island’s largest locale and central business hub – which functions as the “heart” and “dantian”, if not “cranium” of Thailand’s largest island. And there are only a small number of people who could be likened to Phuket’s “brains”. One of them is Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana. To get a better insight of the city’s current challenges and opportunities, The Phuket News recently sat down with the elegant leader, who is about midway through her third successive term. In a wide-ranging interview that spanned the better part of four hours, we only began to scratch the surface of what is, has been and what is to come for the provincial center.
Growing up
“We face many challenges,” Mayor Somjai remarks. “The city’s official population is not growing as fast as the rest of the island. In the last five year’s, the registered population grew from about 74,000 to 78,000.” And although such a growth rate works
out to little over 1 per cent per year, the mayor points out that the city is dealing with growth on a much larger scale. “When you count the number of people that commute to and from Phuket [city municipality] every day, our actual population is double. No less than 30,000 students living in Kathu, Thalang and Chalong study in Phuket [city municipality] during the day, and about the same number of workers too.” It is for this reason that Mayor Somjai has been a proponent for the most recently proposed route for a light-rail system that would link the airport on the island’s north with Chalong in the south.
Getting on board
The latest proposed monorail route treads the length of Thepkrasattri Rd, south from the airport and Thalang, passing through the heart of the historic district of Phuket Town, south to Saphan Hin, and ultimately back to Chalong via Sakdidet and Chao Fa East roads. This is opposed to previously proposed routes that would change direction at the Bang Ku junction (in front of Toyota Pearl) and head along the bypass road, through the so-called “new central business district” and to onto Chalong via Chao Fa West – a basket in which many developers, many backed by Bangkok money, have been placing their eggs lately. Asked if she expected resistance to the new proposed route that would bypass the new CBD, Mayor Somjai smiled. “The majority of Phuket’s vote is here, in Phuket city municipality. They [developers
invested in the new CBD area surrounding Central Festival] cannot ignore the voice of the people.” And it is these Phuket people – those who have studied, worked and lived here for generations – who deserve priority in terms of infrastructure, especially public transport, the mayor insists. “Eventually, mass transit will extend to every part of the island and everyone will benefit,” she said. As for prioritizing the city municipality, Mayor Somjai has urged planners to carefully consider a number of important factors. “Parking for commuters. The project would need park-and-ride facilities at strategic points along the route, which would require additional land. Parking is already limited in the city as it is. “Electricity is another important factor. We need to ensure the supply would be sufficient, since most of our power is imported [from off-island]. A battery power station would need to be built within the municipality to support the system. “Above all, it would need to be viable – do the locals want and need it? Will they benefit from it? Will it contribute to economic growth? Will it be environmentally sustainable?” Asked if she thought it is viable, she said, “It would relieve a strain on the city’s roads and infrastructure... reducing traffic and provide an alternative for the tens of thousands of commuters entering and leaving the city daily ... it would also benefit tourism [to Old Town and Saphan Hin], providing tourists an alternative to taxis and tuk tuks.” Asked if she thought the project would break ground in this lifetime, she chuckled “We’ve been told [at the briefing on June 3] that the project is going through, in the next three to four years.”
Urgent matter
The Mayor went on to talk about more immediate issues – waste management. She noted that although Phuket city by itself isn’t growing as fast as the rest of the island, but it is the rest of the island’s problems that it has to deal with. “If you liken Phuket to a river, Phuket city municipality is what you call in Thai, plai naam [literally the end of the river or waterway].” Indeed, all of the island’s garbage, from locals and tourists, and much of the wastewater that is released into the island’s biggest waterway, Klong Bang Ya, ends up the municipality’s landfill, incinerator and wastewater treatment facility in Saphan Hin. Highlighting overall growth that the island has experienced over the last 15 years, she noted that less than three million tourists had come to Phuket in 1999, when there was only about 200,000 residents officially registered. “Now, we are looking at 11 to 12 million thephuketnews
THEPHUKETNEWS.COM
tourists per year, while the registered population is about 360,000.” And no doubt, the growth will continue, as will the waste increase. To manage such growth, the city has set two goals. The first is to improve and increase the practice of sorting, so that only necessary trash (non recyclables and non-organic) ends up at the landfill and incinerator. “The landfill is overflowing and the new incinerator is running at full capacity. Even once we [get the budget to enable us to] bring the old one back online, it will only increase our capacity by 250 tonnes. “Studies have shown that as much as 65 per cent of Phuket’s waste is organic, while 21 per cent is recyclables, 14 per cent is general [non-recyclable plastics] and the remainder toxic. Better sorting practices is the key to revealing strain on the system.” The second goal, she adds, is to reduce the annual rate of increase of waste from 7 per cent currently down to 5 per cent. Considering that the landfill is overflowing, and that the incinerator is already running at full capacity (700 tonnes a day), the situation seems dire. As a stop-gap, the municipality looks to bring the old incinerator back online within the next year or two, which would only increase burning capacity by 250 tonnes per day. “Even if no more trash was brought in, it would still take nine years to burn
Although Phuket city municipality’s registered population is growing steadily, the provincial center is dealing with and managing rapid growth of the entire province, especially the waste – solid and liquid forms – most of which ends up at the Saphan Hin incinerator, landfill and wastewater treatment plant, a facility (top right) which is operating at or near capacity. @thephuketnews

off all the trash already here [in the landfill]. There is no more room left. We can’t expand anymore. So reducing the amount of consumer waste is essential.”
Attitude adjustment
“We need start by changing the attitudes of the people, otherwise the increase in garbage will easily jump from 7 to 9 or 10 per cent per year, not drop to 5 per cent as aimed.” What better starting point than with the schools and young people? A strong campaigner for education, Mayor Somjai notes that all of the municipality’s 23 schools have initiated both reducing and sorting campaigns. “We have two model schools, Tesaban Mueang School and Bang Niao School, which have projects with three areas of focus. These include projects for organic composting using dead leaves, for example, trash sorting and recycling banks and the production of organic fertilizer for agriculture purposes.” In addition to working with the schools, the municipality has also established a learning center on site at the landfill and incinerator, with learning stations focused on said projects, in addition to producing EM (effective microorganisms) solution for domestic use. Mayor Somjai urges any educators, individuals or groups interested in visiting the solid-waste learning center, to get in touch (The incinerator can
be reached on 076-250439, otherwise, please email The Phuket News Life Editor, Steven Layne, who can help coordinate).
Opening the flood gates
In the final part of the interview, Mayor Somjai was asked to comment on the situation of water and wastewater management. In the past, parts of the city suffered greatly from flooding, especially during the wet season. The main causes, Mayor Somjai noted, were clogged drains and waterways, which could not dispel water quickly enough. But thanks to an initiative from her predecessor – the former mayor of Phuket City, Phumisak Hongsyok and Mayor Somjai’s political mentor – flooding in the city has drastically reduced, simply by maintaining unobstructed drains and waterways. Instead of waiting to react to floods only when they overwhelm residents,
the city has made drainage maintenance part a core part to its annual planning budget. “Now, we dredge and clear out the drains, waterways and koom naam (waterholes) of trash and debris twice a year, using a budget of one million baht each time, or B2 million annually.” Mayor Somjai adds that another key element to Phuket’s flood control strategy is the application of His Majesty the King’s “Monkey Cheek” irrigation principle, using koom naaam or water retention areas to channel excess water into. These water retention areas are manmade waterholes or small reservoirs that can be found at Saphan Hin, off Soi Kor Phai, Kra Rd, Chalerm Phrakiet Park, Soi San Suk 2 and Soi Jun Asawa Suk.As for wastewater, Mayor Somjai says the situation is manageable, at least for now. “Our wastewater treatment plant at Saphan Hin was the first and [is the] largest in Phuket. It was designed to treat up to 36,000 cubic litres per day. Now, we’re treating about 31,000 cubic litres per day.” But as the city and island continues to grow, it’s only a matter of time before the capacity is reached. All things considered, Mayor Somjai doesn’t necessarily see a bleak future ahead for Phuket. “As long as the current generation of leaders upholds the important traditional societal values, with a solid basis in culture, education and respect for the environment, and laws, then the next generation of leaders will have an easier job. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy.”

IN BRIEF Jaguar’s Virtual Windscreen
High-end automaker Jaguar released a video last week that shows just how much work they have begun to put into virtual reality. Virtual Windscreen is a new system that allows drivers to see racing lines on the road, which change colour for optimum braking and acceleration. In addition, the system also lets drivers race alongside a virtual ghost car with real lap times uploaded by other users. “The Virtual Windscreen is a concept at the moment, as the technology doesn’t exist today to utilize the entire windscreen as a [heads-up display],” said Jaguar Land Rover spokesman, adding that the technology could become available ten years down the road.
Robot material invented
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Stony Brook University have figured out a way to make materials that they hope will be used for robots. The material is essentially a foam that is saturated in wax and then heated and cooled in specific areas, which allows the material to become soft and pliable when warm but hard and rigid when cold. The group then 3D printed the polyurethane foam, which allowed them to create specific designs. “It could be used in areas where robots have to interact safely with humans. There’s a whole host of applications out there,” said MIT professor Annette Hosoi.

The companies touted the tieup as uniting eBay’s global clout with the “iconic international art” expertise of Sotheby’s famed auction house. The eBay website will soon launch a revamped market for art and collectibles, featuring live auctions with real-time bidding from around the world. Sotheby’s was billed as the virtual venue’s “anchor tenant.” The collaboration will begin with a series of live auctions from Sotheby’s headquarters in New York City. “The growth of the art market, new generation technology and our shared

John James Audubon’s elephant-folio “The Birds of America” sold in April 2014 for $3.5 million, setting a record for an online purchase in a live auction at Sotheby’s. Devin Wenig, president of eBay Marketplaces, said the partnership “is a significant milestone in our efforts to expand the live auction market.” “When you combine [Sotheby’s] inventory with eBay’s technology platform and global reach, we can give people access to the world’s finest, most inspiring items -any time, anywhere and from any device.” California-based eBay has some 145 million customers in 190 countries, and says 36 million purchased some $8 billion in collectibles from the site in 2013. IN BRIEF Tancharoen goes Dickens
Kevin Tancharoen, who has already directed the dance film You Got Served and the remake of the 1980 hit film Fame, has signed on to helm a violent-version of Charle’s Dickens’ famous holiday novel. The Guns of Christmas Past, written by Andrew Hilton, is loosely inpired by the Dickens’ novel as the story finds a retired hit man who returns home to Chicago on Christmas Eve to avenge the death of a friend. The film has no production date yet.

t’s important to keep in mind that sequels are, generally, not that good. They are, by-and-large, treated as commodities used to fatten the wallets of producers and studio executives. But in recent years, with the expanding universe of super hero franchises, the epic scope of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, and the rising production value of television shows, there is more pressure than ever to surprise audiences with a better-than-original product. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a great example of a sequel that could have been a simple filler between franchise movies. The previous installment, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (featuring James Franco) was rather goofy but respectable. With Dawn, however, it was clear that director Matt Reeves wasn’t going to allow the franchise to head downward and focused the narrative of the film to reflect real-life societal problems. The film starts off ten years after the events of Rise, where the human population was almost completely wiped off the map thanks to a virus. The only human survivors live in San Francisco, amid a post-apocalyptic wasteland. These humans encounter the ruling apes, led by the alpha-male, Caesar. Alongside the human leader – named Malcolm (Jason Clarke) – Caesar has to decide what to do with these humans since he is more than distrustful after the events of the first film. The humans and apes, however, are forced to work together for their mutual benefit and the two groups begin to form a bond. This peace is destroyed when Koba, an ape who hates humans, puts his plan in motion to take control of the apes in order to go to war with humans. One of the underrated aspects of the film is just how well it pull the audience onto the side of the apes – human are the most boring part of the story. The way the apes interact and have clashes similar to our own real-life counterparts is spot on to the point that audi-

A movie about the 2010 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 workers and coated the ocean with crude oil has found a screenwriter and director. The film will be based on the New York Times’ article on the rig’s failure and revolve around the people who were affected by the disaster. JC Chandor, who directed the 2011 film Margin Call about the initial stages of the financial crisis in 2008, has been tapped to lead the project. Chandor’s will begin working on the film after his latest project, A Most Violent Year, hits screens later this year.

ences will forget they are watching apes. The film is well-paced with character development that actually makes you care about not only Caesar and Malcolm, but also their underlings and even their antagonists. Small moments of “humanity” amongst the apes build up to something that Michael Bay’s Transformers wished it had: intrigue. Audiences will easily buy-in to who Caesar – the true star of the show – has become (since he is in the first film). Andy Serkis, the acto whose characteristics and moves were used to motion captureperfection in this film, deserves praise. His performance as Caesar was moving, photorealisit and is telling of his acting abilities. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is The Dark Knight of sequels as it takes its time to tell a story through subtlety and nuance. Each scene builds upon the last with memorable moments sprinkled among superb action sequences. If this is the only sequel you see this year, good job.

Hua Hin welcomes back jazz fest
T
Infinity band set to ignite the event
The legendary Koh Mr Saxman
he popular Hua Hin Jazz Festival returns to the charming beach resort on July 26. Set to fill the atmosphere of Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Suan Luang Rachinee Park with authentic and quality music from 5pm to midnight will be a spectacular line-up of jazz artists, producers and instrumentalists. Clockwise from top left: Soul After Six; Steve Canon, Infinity, The Travellers. The festival will open with “Saxophone Madness”, a jam session of leading saxophonists in Thailand. Koh Mr Saxman will headline this segment, which will be further boosted by the equally strong performances by other heavyweights, including Pisoot Prateeprasen (T-Bone’s tenor saxophone player), Passakorn Mora (the latest Kom Chud Luek Award winner), Krit Booranawittayawut (producer), and legendary saxophonist Tewan Subsanyakorn, who will appear as a very special guest. Then comes the festival’s debut performances by new stars who have proven themselves to Thai audiences through singing competitions. They include May, Fang Khao and Nut from The Voice, King from The Star, Pure from KPN, and Nat from the Thailand Jazz Singing Contest. The evening will also feature inter-
national showcases by the Steve Canon Band and The Travellers. US trumpeter Steve will present songs from his new album as well as some romantic tunes as a tribute to Chet Baker. The audience will then be treated to the highly acclaimed band The Travellers from Japan, who represent a perfect combination of jazz-rock-swing and bossa nova. Also set to make a big hit during their special show by the beach will be Infinity, Thailand’s very own jazz fusion band. Led by Chumpol Supanyo, these talented musicians have recorded
several albums and won many awards. The finale on the night will be Soul After Six, whose alternative legacy conforms to pop, rock and jazz. Stylistic in their own way, the trio is one of the longest remembered artists of their time, with their songs being enjoyed by younger generations today. They will prepare a unique brass instrument for a repertoire of songs from the 1980s. Bangkok Post There is no admission fee to the festival. Visit www.facebook.com/officialhuahinjazzfestival2014.
Prog-rock legend Pink Floyd set to release first album in two decades
B
ritish rock legends Pink Floyd are set to release a new album called The Endless River in October, their first in 20 years. “It is an album of mainly ambient and instrumental music,” a statement on the band’s website said last week. “Work is still in progress, but more details to come at the end of the summer.” The album will be based on recording sessions from 1993 and 1994, when the band were working on their “The Division Bell” album.
It will feature guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright, a founding member of the band who died in 2008. The album is produced by Gilmour and Phil Manzanera, the lead guitarist of art rock band Roxy Music, together with recording engineer Andy Jackson. Pink Floyd have sold over 250 million copies of albums such as Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here worldwide since they were founded in 1965. The new album will be the band’s first release since
1994’s The Division Bell. Backing singer Durga McBroom-Hudson, who has toured with the band, wrote in a Facebook posting that “there was much rejoicing” over the album and that she would feature on it. She said that recording for the album had started during sessions for The Division Bell but the band had since done significantly more work on it. Pink Floyd last played a concert at the Live 8 charity show in London in 2005 but it is not clear whether they will tour to promote the new album. AFP thephuketnews

New signings hop on Phuket FC carousel Scoreless draw keeps Phuket FC in middle of League-1 standings FOOTBALL J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
THE RONINS PLAYED TO a 0-0 draw for the first time in over a month last Saturday (July 12) as they were unable to put one in the back of the net against TTM Customs FC on the road. Even with new signings Kendall “Jacky” Jagdeosingh and Andres Luiz “Andrezinho Rodrigues Lopes making their Phuket FC debut, the team were unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities against a team that is only one place above them on the Yamaha League-1 table.
The draw keeps Phuket FC in 9th place with 29 points, eight points below 3rd place Bangkok FC (37 points). With 14 matches left on the season, the Ronins are expected to go all-out until their final match on November 1. Next up, the team will play Krabi FC in the “Andaman Derby” on Saturday (July 19) at Surakul Stadium, 6:30pm kick-off. Krabi FC are currently 14th on the Yamaha League-1 table with 22 points but held Phuket FC to a scoreless draw in their first encounter back on March 22 at Krabi Stadium. Class Act Media is a proud media partner of Phuket FC.
Phuket United steamroll Chiang Mai on the road FOOTBALL PHUKET UNITED GATHered some breathing room with a 5-2 victory over Chiang Mai at 700 Anniversary Stadium in northern Thailand last week (July 9). The win gives United three much-needed points in their quest to claim 2nd place (53 points) in the Futsal Thailand Premier League with only five matches left in the 2014 season. Siam Navy, however, are hot on their trail with 50 points which is good enough for 3rd place on the FTPL table. Still, there is no denying the scoring abilities of the Andaman Pearl’s players as the team are currently second in the league in both goals

scored (108) and goal differential (52). United only trail 1st place Chonburi Bluewave (70 points, 120 goal differential). Next up for Phuket United is a home match against Pattaya on July 23 at Saphan Hin Gymnasium in Phuket Town, 7pm kick-off. Class Act Media is a proud media partner.

T
he annual mid-season transfer window has hit Phuket FC as several players have been let-go by the club with replacements ready to step in right away. The team has decided to let Christian Alex’s contract to expire in addition to Watchara Kiriaram. The Ronins have also agreed to transfer goalkeeper Ninruddin Nide-Ha to Songkhla United of the Thai Premier League. At a press conference last week, the team announced the signing of several players, among whom include former Trat FC striker Kendall Maurice “Jacky” Jagdeosingh and Brazilian winger Andre Luiz Rodrigues “Andrezinho” Lopes from CE Nova Esperança in Brazil. Jagdeosingh, a 28-yearold striker from Trinidad and Tobago, was Trat’s leading scorer with eight goals this season. He will join an attack that already includes Phuket leading scorer and captain Wasan Natasan, Ney Fabiano, and Anusak Laosangthai. Andrezinho, meanwhile, is a 29-year-old midfielder that has played all over the world, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, and Japan. “The signing of these two

players would be great for a small club like ours,” said team President Pariyawit “Benz”
Achariyachai. “We might beat big teams home, but still didn’t play well
as expected when away. Jacky and Andrezinho will play an important part to get us back into a top-four place.” In addition, the team has signed former BEC Tero goalkeeper Adisak Buntawaree, among others. Phuket FC previously signed Panupong Aramwiroj away from Ratchaburi FC, last month. Pariyawit also commented on the team’s search for a new manager, stating that – for the moment – the team is committed to interm coach Somsak Rungsawang until a suitable replacement is found. “[We] must ensure that [the new coach] will help the team understand the style of play on this team,” he said.

Bondi Bar Bashers impress with victory over Village CRICKET Dave Thomas davethomas01@hotmail.com
T
he second round of the Outriggers T20 competition saw the Bondi Bar Bashers take care of a stacked Village team that saw several of its previous stars return to the fold at the Alan cooke Ground in Thalang. The Village chose to bat first and got off to a shaky start, losing both their openers in the first two overs. Foster was spectacularly caught by Richard Desmond at mid-wicket as he glided towards the ball to snatch the opening wicket with a fantastic catch. Camden Dupreez soon followed his fellow batsman to the clubhouse after he was trapped LBW off the bowling of Mushtaq for just one run. Whetton stepped to the crease and got off to a solid start, but some technical bowling from Suttiprapha (Pao)
Imateyz Mustaq scored an unbeaten 66 for the Bondi Bar Bashers, off 40 balls in 35 minutes. Photo: Michael Way saw Whetton caught behind by Anthony Van Blerk. The Bondi Bar Bashers bowlers piled on the pressure with accurate bowling. The wickets continued to fall and the Village soon found themselves in trouble at 5 for 17 after just 6 overs.
Ali stepped-in for the Village and ushered the team through a tricky period for the batting side, which earned him the pick of the batsmen, scoring 31 runs off 30 balls, including 4 fours. Ali was eventually dismissed by Pir Sami, who bowled a sting-
ing delivery to knock down the stumps and send Ali on his way. A great display of bowling backed up by sharp fielding restricted the Village to a total of 80 runs in 15.6 overs. After missing the opening game last week due to injury,
Mushtaq opened the batting for the Bondi Bar Bashers alongside Raju. After a sterling performance with the ball (3 for 14 from 3 overs), Mushtaq continued his good form with the bat. He controlled the innings from start to finish with powerful and elegant batting.
Raju supported him superbly, but allowed his partner to obtain the majority of the strike. Mushtaq scored 66 runs off just 40 balls, including 10 fours, and with a strike-rate of 165. The opening batters steered their team to an impressive victory, needing just 9.4 overs. A man-of-the-match performance by Mushtaq secured a second win in succession for the Bondi Bar Bashers, getting their T20 season off to the perfect start and look like the team to beat in this year’s competition. The next fixture is this Sunday (July 20) as Laguna take on Thalang in the morning game at 10am and ICC play Bondi Bar Bashers in the afternoon at 2pm. Anyone interested in getting involved with cricket in Phuket can email the Phuket Cricket Group at chairman@phuketcricketgroup.com, or visit phuketcricketgroup.com for more information.

The first games run from July 12 to July 19, followed by the second round from July 20 to July 26. Players from Japan, Australia, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong, France, Germany, and elsewhere are taking part.

Cancellara Contador out of Tour Former Tour de France winner Alberto Contador and 2008 Beijing Olympic time trial champion Fabian Cancellara have both pulled out of the Tour de France competition. Cancellara cited fatigue and a desire to prepare for the World Championships later this year as his reason to leave the annual cycling competition. Contador, meanwhile, broke his shinbone in a bad crash during the mountainous stage from Mulhouse to La Planche des Belles Filles and was forced to quite the Tour shortly afterwards.

huket will be the site of the next “LFP World Challenge” when Spanish La Liga club UD Almeria play an exhibition match against Phuket FC on August 6 at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town. The event is part of the Spanish league’s efforts to promote La Liga overseas and includes friendly matches against local clubs in Europe, Asia as well as North and South America until mid-2016. strokeplay tournament. World No.34 Thongchai said it will be a great honour to play at the Olympics but added he was not sure if he will still be competitive in two years’ time. Also looking forward to the Rio Games is 24-yearold Kiradech, who won the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit last year, four years after turning pro. “I am gaining more experience and am quite confident my world ranking will be high enough to earn me a berth at the Olympic Games,” Kiradech said. Thailand seems to have an even better chance of seeing their female representatives in Rio. There are now five Thais playing regularly on the LPGA Tour, led by world No.27 Pornanong Phatlum and No.43 Ariya Jutanugarn. Bangkok Post

Germany throws giant homecoming party, parade for World Cup heroes
H
u nd reds of thousands of jubilant fans massed at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate last Tuesday (July 15) to cheer their new national heroes bringing home football’s top prize for the first time to a reunified Germany. The celebrations in Berlin began just two days after Germany’s 1-0 thriller against Argentina made them the first European team to win football’s top tournament while in South America. Germany coach Joachim Loew told more than 250,000 supporters at the so-called Fan Mile stretching behind the Gate, the symbol of national unity, that they shared the title with his players. “We are all world champions,” he said. “Of course we are all overjoyed now to be with the fans.” Captain Philipp Lahm hoisted the World Cup trophy
German national football team players cheer as they ride in an open-deck bus to Berlin’s landmark Brandenburg Gate to celebrate their FIFA World Cup title. Germany won their fourth World Cup title, after 1-0 win over Argentina on July 13 in Rio de Janeiro in the FIFA World Cup Brazil final game. Photo: AFP to a giant roar from the crowd. “I’ve been dreaming about this since I was a child,” Lahm said as he passed the golden statuette to his fellow players. Team members wearing black shirts emblazoned with the number one took the stage in groups to greet ecstatic supporters, many of whom
travelled from across the country and skipped work to join the party. Mario Goetze, who scored the only goal in Sunday’s (July 13) nail-biter f inal against Argentina, called the Mannschaft’s win “a dream”. “We played an amazing tournament,” he said to chants
of “Super Mario”. “It’s an incredible feeling.” Midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger appeared with the black, red and gold German flag draped from his shoulders, with a bandage still affixed below his eye from a cut he suffered in a clash during the final.
“Now we finally have the damn thing,” he said, clutching the trophy. The players jumped and danced together in a raucous circle on stage, singing “this is how the Germans win, this is how the Germans win”. The team touched down in the late morning at Berlin’s
Tegel airport on a Lufthansa jet re-branded “Fanhansa” and “Victors’ Plane”, as thousands of supporters waited on a viewing platform. “This is a historic event,” said 34-year-old bus driver Bernd Hesse, who followed all the matches in Brazil on the radio when he was behind the wheel. He noted that Germans had waited 24 years to bask in the glory of a World Cup victory, the first since the reunification of the country in 1990 following three wins by the former West Germany. “It’s not every day that you get to see something like this,” he said. Ulrich Felgentreff said he was born in 1954, the first year West Germany won the World Cup – just nine years after the horrors of World War II, as the country was gradually rejoining the community of nations. “Everyone has an immense feeling of pride,” he said, decked out with his family in black, red and gold. “And that pride grows title by title.” AFP
Messi misses chance to cement football legacy ARGENTINA CAPTAIN Lionel Messi ended the World Cup final with a golden trophy in his hands, but it was not the one he wanted. Moments after the match at the Maracana stadium and with Germany’s players still cavorting on the pitch, Messi was called up to receive the Golden Ball award for the tournament’s best player. He flashed a perfunctory smile, but it was with the
knowledge that Argentina’s defeat had prevented him from cementing his place in the pantheon of greatness. “The truth is it doesn’t
interest me at this moment,” he admitted later. While the 27-year-old has won everything there is to win with Barcelona, the World Cup final offered him the opportunity to definitively seal his legacy in the sport. Pele, Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo all scored decisive goals in World Cup finals, while Diego Maradona created the goal that settled the 1986 tournament. But Messi found himself upstaged by Mario Goetze’s extra-time winner for Germany. With 354 goals in 425 games for Barcelona, many of them works of art, Messi’s greatness cannot be denied, but as he himself has admitted, there is no substitute for a World Cup winner’s medal. “I would give all my personal records to be world champion,” he said. “I’d prefer to win the World Cup than the Ballon d’Or. As a player, winning the World Cup is the biggest thing there is. It’s something you dream of as a youngster and that dream never fades away.” AFP thephuketnews

Anderson-Jadeja row spices up second Int’l Test CRICKET TENSIONS IN THE SECOND Test at Lord’s are will increase after the International Cricket Council charged England’s James Anderson with allegedly “abusing and pushing” India’s Ravindra Jadeja just two days before the match. The incident is alleged to have happened after the players left the field for lunch on Thursday’s (July 10) second day of last week’s drawn first Test in Nottingham when allrounder Jadeja was batting. India, and England may be two of the ‘Big Three’ nations now effectively running the ICC but that relationship is to be put under strain in the coming weeks. Even before the ICC confirmed the charges against Anderson which, if proved, could see him banned for up to four Tests, the England and Wales Cricket Board issued a statement saying the bowler had their “total support” and warning they would report

However, Anderson could miss part of what is India’s first five-Test tour of England for 55 years. England also added Simon Kerrigan to the squad, after part-time off-break bowler Moeen Ali proved expensive, even though left-arm spinner Kerrigan hasn’t played Test cricket since conceding 53 runs in eight wicketless overs on his debut against Australia at The Oval last year. Finishing four times in first place and two times in second place, Java accumulated an outstanding six points over the weekend which was good enough for 1st overall in the Racing Multihull category and the Overall Perpetual Trophy. Right behind them were Asia Catamarans Hurricane, skippered by Alan Carwardine, with just eight points over the weekend. A DNF (did not finish) in race two put the crew behind early in the competition despite a solid showing in the rest of

The Bob Mott-led Nina crew came in 3rd place with 14 points in the Racing Multihull category after a series several second and third place finishes in five races. Meanwhile, the Firefly 850 Sport class saw the Advanced
Racing Team take the number one spot on the Mamba boat. Neil Ayre’s crew racked up a score of nine points despite a DNF in the first race. In 2 nd place was John Newnham’s Twin Sharks crew that accumulated 11 points over the weekend. The crew finished second in three races and first in once, but a
fifth and fourth place finish in two races sunk the team’s chances at the top spot. Despite a strong performance in which they finished three races in first place and a fourth race in third place, two straight DNF’s forced Hans Rahmann’s Voodoo crew down to 3rd overall in the Firefly 850 Sport category. In the Open Multihull class, Roman Shirokov led his crew on the Star Fruit to the top spot after claiming three races in first place. The regatta was Asia’s biggest gathering of multihull sailing boats (catamarans and trimanaras) and the was the first under the Multihull Solutions banner. Class Act Media was a proud sponsor of the Multihull Solutions Regatta 2014. For more information, visit acyc.asia.
