espite the recent deadly shootout at a pub in Samui or the bodies piling up of people in Phuket killed by guns carried into public places by off-duty officers, the Royal Thai Police is not considering reviewing its stance on officers carrying loaded firearms into pubs, clubs, restaurants or other venues while not on duty.

To Maj Gen Chayodom Jintawairoth, Commander of the General Staff Sub-Division at Region 8 Police, the current policy is safe enough. Citing the Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, Fireworks, and the Equivalent of Firearms Act, which dates back to 1947, Maj Gen Chayodom said, “By law, only officers on duty may carry weapons in public, which is a suitable policy. Officers on duty need weapons for protection and to stop crime when

needed. There is no need to change this policy.” After explaining at length that police officers of the rank of captain or above must also carry police identification with them while carrying a firearm in public while on duty, Gen Chayodom admitted that the Royal Thai Police “does not have a policy for off-duty police officers to carry weapons into public places”. “If off duty officers are involved in a firearm incident and found

guilty, they will be punished with both criminal and disciplinary proceedings, accordingly,” he said in an official statement* issued to The Phuket News. “If after investigation an officer is found guilty of ‘such an accusation’ (sic) then the punishment would be either to ask the officer to leave the police force voluntary or he or she will be fired from the current position, this depends on the severity of the offence,” he said.

Tourists split over virgin beaches: Poll PHUKET POLL The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

THE RECENT REVELAtion by Phuket Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan that he will start taking steps to have all beaches in Phuket cleared of vendors and returned to “virgin” status has received a mixed reaction among expats and foreign visitors in an online poll by The Phuket News. Cur rently, the “10% zones” are the last bastions where vendors may work at selected beaches in Phuket, and were introduced by Phuket’s previous Governor, Chamroen Tipayapongtada. However, the “beach rules” in Phuket specifically apply only in Phuket. The 10% rule does not apply anywhere else in Thailand, not even in Khao Lak, just one hour’s drive north of Phuket, or even on Phi Phi or elsewhere across the bay in Krabi. Gov Chockchai last month explained that his understanding was that local authorities had no legal right to allow any vendors on the beaches, and that he would have them removed. To this, The Phuket News asked readers in an online poll, “Do you support Gov Chockchai’s plan to clear Phuket’s beaches of all vendors?” The poll, which ran for two weeks, concluded at midnight last Sunday night

More than 40% of respondents called for beach vendors to be allowed to return. (Nov 13), as Phuket begins to enter its annual tourism high season. Of note, 80% of respondents to the poll were expats or foreign visitors to Phuket. Only 14% agreed with Gov Chockchai’s stance, voting “Yes, all beaches in Phuket should be clear of all vendors.” However, a further 34% called for the Governor to “clear the beaches of vendors, but allow tourists to bring their own sun loungers.” In contrast, 41% of respondents called for a return to Phuket’s past, voting, “No, allow vendors back on the beaches, which worked well for tourists for years.” The current status of allowing vendors to occupy 10% of the beach at selected beaches gained the least support, with 12% of respondents voting, “No, leave the ‘10% rule’ in place – it is the best solution so far.” To see the full poll results, visit ThePhuketNews. com and select “Poll” from the “News” menu.

Gun-toting cop policy to stay despite deaths

Continued from page 1 ...That is if the officer is charged, and even then that is if the police investigation is concluded, or even launched. Gen Chayodom did not respond to questions about the current status of investigations or criminal proceedings against any Region 8 police officers involved in specific cases identified by The Phuket News where citizens – mostly innocents – were killed by guns carried by Royal Thai Police officers into a public venue while off duty. Region 8 Police jurisdiction includes Samui, where two people were shot dead and five others wounded in a violent pub brawl involving several policemen in the early hours of Sept 23. Lt Corp Jaerasak Sroisangvarn and Kraisorn Mingsakul, a guard at the Camp Beer pub in Bo Phut, died in the shoot-out. T he f ive w it h bu llet wounds were identified as Lt Corp Sitthisak Ngamkhom, Lt Corp Kritsana Boonyin, pub guard Voravit Yimyong, pub manager Thepthinnakorn Thongphet and pub waiter Veerapong Jarusenee. Initial reports indicated that the gunfight began after Lt Corp Narongsak Khamjai of Bo Phut Police Station fired shots from his 9mm pistol into the crowd gathering in front of the pub after a fight broke out between the police “enjoying a night out” and a group of young men at the pub. Narongsak was later arrested, sacked from the police

Lt Corp Wongsathon Theparan of the Kathu Police (Thung Thong) suffered fatal bullet wounds in the shootout near a Phuket Town pub. Photo: Eakkapop Thongtub force and now faces murder and attempted murder charges. Closer to home, however, police have yet to provide any explanation to the public about two Phuket City Police officers killing each other in a gunfight outside a restaurant in Phuket Town. The shooting started after Sgt Maj Nattachai Phonoy of the Phuket Immigration Police refused Lt Corp Wongsathon Theparan of the Kathu Police (Thung Thong) and his friends entry to the Haophan restaurant and pub near the Seahorse Circle. Sgt Maj Nattachai was moonlighting at the live music venue as security. Lt Corp Wongsathon responded by fetching his gun from his pickup truck parked nearby. He then returned to the pub and pistol-whipped Sgt Maj Nattachai for the insult, then fired a shot in the air. Lt Thamarong Suwanchatree of the Phuket City Police, who was eating in another

restaurant nearby came to investigate, and ended up plugging three rounds into the chest of Lt Corp Wongsathon, who returned fire, fatally wounding Lt Thamarong in the process. With both officers dead, the Phuket City Police have yet to reveal any action in the case. The Royal Thai Police silencing any investigation in that incident, however, pales in comparison to lack of explanation to a waitress being shot in the head outside the Saraphan Pleng bar near Chalong Circle by a policeman’s gun just before 4am – hours after the pub was supposed to have closed by law. Karaoke hostess Nootsika Glaseuk, 36, from Ranong, had just walked out of the pub, which is literally around the corner from Chalong Police Station, when she was hit in the head by a bullet fired from a passing pickup truck. Provincial anti-narcotics

officer Sen Sgt Maj Sompong Santathiwong turned himself in the next day. He affirmed the gun that fired the deadly shot was his, but denied that he murdered Ms Nootsika. Police in Phuket “accidentally” shooting innocents is not new. In 2013, Sgt Phongsagorn Treeyut of the Kathu Police (now called the Patong Police) said he was playing with his gun when it went off, shooting dead 27-year-old waitress Sawitree Kaewnin while sitting at a table outside the Fong Beer pub on Pang Muang Sai Kor Road in Patong. Police confirmed that Sgt Phongsagorn was “investigated”, but any conclusion failed to reach the public. That case followed another policeman a year earlier shooting dead a man in the middle of the street, in Phun Phol Soi 11, in what was claimed to be self-defence. Again, news of any legal action in that case failed to reach public ears. Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Teerapol Thipjaroen branded questions about these cases as “nonsense”. “If you want a reason, you have to ask the investigator (in each case). You must follow up with the investigator,” he said.

* By responding to the questions formally asked by The Phuket News, Gen Chayodom indicates only that he was the officer tasked to respond to the questions; doing so is no indication that the decision is his responsibility or within his authority to change.

Frenchman found with throat cut POLICE ARE investigating the death of a Frenchman who was found in a hotel room in Patong last week with his throat slit. P a t o n g Po l i c e C a p t Sineenart Cherdchootrakunthong responded to a 191 call at 8:45pm on Nov 9 when it was reported that a foreign man had been found dead inside a room at the Delicious Residence in Nanai Rd, Patong. Capt Sineenart arrived at the scene with her team and was led to room 127 located on the second floor of the building. Inside the room was the body of a 63-year-old man Frenchman lying face down in the bathroom in a pool of blood. In the police report it states that pools of blood were found all over the bathroom floor and sink, and next to the body was a 12-inch knife. Capt Sineenart and Dr Supawadee Tamluang from Patong Hospital examined the body and confirmed that they found a deep slash wound going from the man’s neck to his left ear. There were no other signs of assault on the body and also no signs of a robbery in the room. According to the police @thephuketnews

The man was staying in room 127 of the Delicious Residence in Nanai Rd, Patong. Photo: Eakkapop Thongtub report, the hotel manager (name withheld) told police that the man had checked in to the property alone on Nov 4 and was due to check out on Nov 30. At 2pm the next day a friend of the deceased (no name provided) knocked on his room but got no answer. The friend left and returned again at 8:30pm. He knocked on his friend’s door again, but again he got no reply so asked the husband of the hotel manager, Johan Baest, to check the room. When they opened the door they discovered the life-

less body of the Frenchman in the bathroom so they called police and rescue workers. Capt Sineenart said that she was told by the friend that the deceased had divorced his wife prior to leaving for Thailand and that this may have caused the man stress leading to him committing suicide. The body was taken to Patong Hospital for doctors to thoroughly examine the body again. The French Embassy has been notified of the incident. Police will continue with their investigation. olice say they have arrested the man who drove the motorbike used in the street slaying of Patong tuk-tuk boss Sakol Srisompotch in Kathu late last month. The 28-year-old suspect, who police declined to name, was taken into custody in the northern province of Mae Hong Song last Friday (Nov 11) after a warrant for his arrest was issued on Oct 31, Kathu Police Deputy Chief Investigator Lt Col Amponwat Seangreung told The Phuket News on Monday (Nov 14). The suspect is now at Kathu Police Station, Col Amponwat confirmed. “The driver was arrested in Wiang Nuea subdistrict, in the Pai district of Mae Hong Son province. We found him on Nov 11. He went there to marry his northern girlfriend,” he said. He now faces the charge of conspiracy to murder, conspiracy to illegally obtain a firearm and conspiracy to bring a gun into a public area without per-

Speaking briefly with The Phuket News on Monday, Kathu Police Chief Col ML Pattanajak Jakkapan also declined to name the suspect. “We have apprehended five suspects. That is all we can tell the media for now,” he said. Asked how many suspects were believed to be involved in the murder, Col ML Pattanajak said, “We might have more.” Mr Sakol, 58, was shot dead

in the early hours of Oct 25, when his assailants reportedly rode up on a motorbike in front of the Phuket Villa housing complex on Phra Phuket Kaew Rd in Kathu just before 3am and unloaded a hail of gunfire into the cab of Mr Sakol’s tuk-tuk. He died at the scene. Mr Sakol was the President of the Patong Tuk-Tuk Club. His rival, Wattana “Dam” Nawakeaw, 38, who heads the “KT Tuk Tuk – Taxi Service” group now faces charges of conspiracy to murder Mr Sakol. Wattana, along with 20 other drivers in his “group”, were operating in the same area of

Patong where Mr Sakol operated. His arrest came quickly, and after police discovered a diary kept by Mr Sakol. Police have also arrested 17-year-old male who police named only as “Thong” and by Nov 3 had a third suspect, who police also declined to name, in custody. With Col ML Pattanajak saying that police have apprehended five suspects, it appears that only two suspects now remain at large, but one suspect has yet to be revealed to the public. Whether or not that “invisible suspect” was the gunman remains to be seen.

Lottery touts nabbed for overcharging POLICE THIS WEEK ARrested 17 lottery-ticket vendors for selling tickets for more than the government-mandated B80. The arrests came after complaints were filed against the vendors, Phuket Provincial Police Chief Inspector Col Akanit Danpitaksan announced at a police press conference on Monday (Nov 14). The 17 arrested now each face a fine of up to B10,000 or up to one month in prison, or both. Darawan Naknakhon thephuketnews

Authorities in the dark on jet-ski damages claim Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th

T

wo days after a jetski ridden by a tourist slammed into rocks at Kalim, north of Patong Beach, the Patong Police, Tourist Police and even the head of the Patong jet-ski operators last Friday (Nov 11) all said they had not received any reports of the incident but were now investigating what happened. Somprasong Seangchart, the chief lifeguard at Patong Beach, however, was aware of the incident. “There were two jet-skis driven by tourists. They lost control in strong waves and jumped off the jet-skis before the jet-skis hit the rocks,” he told The Phuket News. “One jet-ski was turned upside down and water got into the motor. The other jetski looked like it had much more damage, and the body of the jet-ski looked broken.” Nucha Petchvimon, President of the Patong Jet Ski Club, said he was unaware of the accident, but added that was “not unusual”.

Yet, Maj Col Teerasak Boonseng, who was the Patong Police duty officer on the Wednesday, confirmed that he had not received any reports of the accident. Likewise, Phuket Tourist Police Chief Lt Col Nareuwat Phutwiro also said he knew nothing of the accident. “I am supposed to be informed of any incidents re-

Patong jet-ski boss Nucha pointed out that the tourist who was riding the heavily damaged jet-ski might be facing a bill of up to B500,000. “Honestly, a jet-ski costs B400,000 to B500,000,” he said. “We have set our own standard fees to charge for damages to jet-skis,” he added. “The insurance covers only up B50,000. A 24-WHEELED TRUCK and trailer loaded with constr uction materials from Bangkok slid sideways while braking after failing to climb Patong Hill last Friday morning (Nov 11). The incident left rush-hour commuters stuck on the hill, praying the truck would not slide backwards any further. The incident happened at about 5am, explained Lt Surapong Pungprom of the Kathu Traffic Police. “The truck was still there when I came on duty at 7am,” he told The Phuket News. “There were lots of motorbikes and cars keeping clear of the truck, and trying to slowly make their way past

it,” he said. A cement truck was called in to help tow the semi-trailer up the hill, Lt Surapong explained. Traffic was finally cleared by 8am. “I checked and the truck was not over weight,” Lt Surapong said. “I questioned the driver, and the problem was that he had no experience driving in Phuket and had never driven over this hill before. The truck simply was not powered up to climb the hill on the bend,” he added. “Luckily no people were injured and no other vehicles were damaged,” Lt Surapong said. Tanyaluk Sakoot

The Phuket Marine Office issued an order on Nov 2 for Kamala Bay Venture Co Ltd to remove the jetty. The order was signed by Phuket Marine Office Director Surat Sirisaiyad. The order gave the company three days to remove the jetty. The jetty was removed on Nov 4. In the order issued, Phuket Marine Chief Surat confessed that his office gave permission to install the jetty, but stated that after an investigation by local marine conservation officials it was agreed that it was best to have the jetty removed. “The floating jetty damaged more than 600 square met res of corals, which breaches Section 17 of Marine and Coastal Resources

THE GOVERNMENT HAS said Christmas and New Year festivities can be held but any entertainment activities should be toned down. The suggestion came after the nation quietly celebrated the Loy Krathong festival on Monday night (Nov 14) without the usual fireworks and entertainment since the nation is still in mourning a full month after His Majesty the King’s passing. Many Loy Krathong sites went ahead with the annual festival but dedicated the tradition of f loating a krathong on waterways to remembering His Majesty the late King.

Traditional and cultural activities recommended by the National Culture Committee to be observed during the Loy Krathong festival included Buddhist-style meritmaking, dhamma practice and listening to prayers, said Deputy Prime Minister Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn. For the coming Christmas and New Year holidays, Gen Tanasak said that public festivities can be held but asked organisers to keep entertainment activities respectful. “I believe every Thai has discretion and knows how to act appropriately during this time of mourning,” he said. A close encounter with killer cops

I

t was a muggy night in August when this editor, together with some former colleagues, decided to head into Phuket Town for a drink and a chat about what we had been up to since working together several years ago. As we walked past the pubs and clubs near the the Seahorse Circle we were greeted with happy cries of “Welcome to Phuket!” by revellers streaming past us who were perhaps unused to seeing Westerners in the area. We took a table at a small restaurant, ordered some food and drinks and sat back, taking in the lively scene. Unbeknownst to us, we were sitting just a few tables away from off-duty police officer Lt Thamarong Suwanchatree, who in just a few short minutes would be dead, shot down in cold blood by a fellow policeman. At first we

thought we heard firecrackers, but as a wave of realisation rippled through the crowd at the restaurant and people started diving for cover, we quickly presumed the worst. We decided to make a quick exit and were none the wiser about what had transpired as we walked passed a man with blood pouring from a cut in his face and screaming out into the night, thinking it just the result of a youngster’s night out gone wrong. It wasn’t until the next day’s police reports came in that we found out. Two policeman were dead – both of whom, like us, were apparently out to have a night of fun with their friends. The difference was that they were armed police, despite the fact they were off-duty. It is a disturbing thought that one of their stray bullets could have killed me, one of

my friends or anyone else unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time that night. Perhaps I could take some comfort if this were a freak event, unheard of in Phuket, and treated as an extremely serious issue to be confronted by the police hierarchy. Sadly, as our page one report shows, shootings like this are not that uncommon in Phuket and police can barely stifle their yawns when asked by media what is being done to solve the problem. The condescending indifference of senior police to questions about the fate of armed off-duty police officers involved in a slew of killings in recent years utterly destroys any sense of trust the public might still have had in their role to protect the people. It is sickening to behold.

HAVE YOUR SAY Beach blues back

Re: Phuket tourists split over virgin beaches: Poll I’ve said for the last few years that tourists come to Phuket for 3 reasons – culture, beach, and nightlife (good and bad). If Phuket continues to restrict the beach’s attraction by not having chairs, umbrellas, vendors, bars and restaurants, tourists will go elsewhere where they are welcomed. The “virgin beach” supporters could care less about tourism and the income it generates.. But, it’s this very tourism that helps the Thais themselves to survive. Buyer beware

Re: Phuket couple irked by poor property building standards Potential investors beware, they employ bare minimum wage workers to build these houses, the standards are appalling, I watched them build the condos at the back of Super Cheap in Chalong that are nearly finished, the standard was unbelievably poor. Wanted to leave it to their daughter? Anyone remember the story

of the flats in BKK that were 30-years-old and needed demolishing because they were falling down? This is what your millions buy you, a shoddy property lasting 20-30 years! Take a good look at what you are buying as the property is being built, go to the site and inspect it for yourself to ensure it is being built correctly, if you don’t have the knowledge, employ someone! malczx7r ....................................................

Not convinced

Re: Phuket business consortium vows Singapore-style bus network within five years Why does the proposed route map leave the entire west coast of Phuket in the shadows? Is this conceding the fact that the west coast is destined to forever be under the control of the most inefficient, corrupt and hated public transport element on the island? This is just another boondoggle that leaves the busiest section of the island just as it is, when in fact it is in the most dire need of change. Forget this place. Phuket will forever be an inefficient and corrupt Third World location, with no vision for a truly better future. This

lame project will only make a relatively small handful of wealthy people more wealthy... and a few more public officials riding new Ducatis. Ed Sanders ...................................................

Re: Floating jetty removed from Phuket beach after ‘dead corals’ claim Absolutely idiotic and disgusting series of missteps by provincial marine authorities. The company which installed it, Kamala Bay Ventures Co Ltd, will manage a new Hyatt Regency hotel there. What are you going to do now, Khun Surat – import new coral? I remember when there was an large area of healthy coral there off the south west end of the beach. Once the international 5-star hotel and mansions development ripped out the hillside in 2006 – apparently (I’m not an expert) the coral took a real beating from the resulting mud runoff. The locals and businesses can write-off Kamala, except for the hi-so on the hillside. The local tourist economy is going downhill, steadily and one of the reasons is that Thais refuse to raise their voices to protect

what needs protecting. I love and respect the country and count Thais as friends. But when is this foolishness going to stop? Thais thinking only of money; little realising that their most precious resources are being destroyed. seanmc ...................................................

Responsible diving Re: Police investigate Swedish diver death at Similans

The Tourism Authority of Thailand and police have an annoying attitude of blaming all professional tour boat operators and dive businesses in the case of an accident, without waiting a full investigation of what exactly has happened. Death and injury in diving, snorkelling or swimming happen due to unexpected events all around the world. Some accidents may be avoided and some may due to lake of care by professionals, but many are also due to tourist’s bad behaviour. The most important rule for safety is that the divers must follow the Divemaster, dive training rules and the dive plan. Asterix

Improved boat service safety measures mulled BANGKOK

T

he Transport Ministry is considering measures to improve safety for the public boat service, including building railings at piers and using electric boats. The move followed the drowning of a man in Khlong Saen Saep last Thursday morning (Nov 10). Deputy Minister Ormsin Chivapruck said both shortand long-term measures were being considered. The Khlong Saen Saep boat service, operated by Family Transport (2002) Co Ltd, serves 70,000 to 80,000 commuters a day. In the short term, captains will be forced to completely stop their vessels at piers regardless of passenger numbers to prevent jumping and to minimise accidents. Violations will lead to licence suspension for both the captains and the operator. The Marine Department was also asked to study the viability of electric boats to enhance safety and reduce

Electric boats have been imported and a pilot project could begin in Khlong Sean Saep before moving on to Chao Phraya River services,” he said. The ministry will also ask the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to enlarge some boat piers to match with

passenger numbers. Mr Ormsin said the Marine Department was investigating the drowning of the passenger. Initially, it found the captain and navigator had complied with safety protocols. “That the captain backed away after the man fell into the water is a standard safety protocol. “A clip showed the man jumped up on the pier like the man in front of him, even

though the boat had not completely stopped. He failed to land firmly and fell backward into the water. What’s unusual is he fell like a deadweight without gasping for air. Forensic officials will check whether he had any [health] conditions,” Mr Ormsin said. The operator agreed to a life insurance pay-out of B100,000 to the victim and more aid to his family. NLA to raise legal age for tobacco to 20 NATIONWIDE THE NATIONAL LEISlative Assembly (NLA) last Friday (Nov 11) agreed in principle to raise the legal age for purchasing cigarettes from 18 to 20 under an amended law regulating tobacco. A total of 159 NLA members voted for the measure, with five abstentions, increasing the minimum legal age to buy cigarettes under the bill to amend the Tobacco Control Act. The amendment was proposed by Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn in a bid to cut the number of teenage smokers. A 21-member committee will be set up and given 15 days to scrutinise the bill. Dr Piyasakol said the current Tobacco Control Act and the Non-Smoker’s Health Protection Act were obsolete and could not keep up with the behaviour of smokers. Enforcement of both laws were also ineffective, he said. However, the NonSmoker’s Health Act has not

Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn. Photo: thaigov.go.th been amended. Under the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, any law associated with tobacco must be amended to protect the health of citizens, particularly youth, he added. NLA member Wallop Tangkana-nurak said the amendment would help steer children and teenagers away from tobacco and smoking. Many international tobacco firms have held promotional activities targeting young people aged under 20, he said, citing statistics showing smokers are getting younger every year. Bangkok Post

‘Nott’ begs for forgiveness TV anchor issues emotional apology for attack on motorcyclist BANGKOK

T

he TV actor and programme host at the centre of the kraab rot ku uproar has finally offered a formal public apology, begged forgiveness from ever yone and withdrawn police complaints against the motorcyclist he repeatedly punched. “I feel guilty now. I really do. I feel guilty about Nong Boy and everything. Therefore, I have apologised to Nong Boy and his family,” Akanat “Nott” Ariyaritwikul said during a news conference at Yannawa police station on Monday (Nov 14). He performed a wai while offering an emotional apology in a trembling voice. Mr Akanat also apologised to his own family, friends, workplace supervisors and education institutions he graduated from, for disappointing them and for their being affected by the scandal. “I thank all for their criticism and warnings given to me. I will heed those words

Photo: Pornprom Satrabhaya and improve myself. “I beg everyone to forgive me.” The 28-year-old’s TV career ended suddenly after a video of the road rage incident went viral. He repeatedly punched Kittisak “Nong Boy” Singto, 25, breaking his nose, and demanded that he kraab rot ku, or kneel and wai in an act

of contrition, in front of his Mini Countryman after Mr Kittisak’s motorcycle scraped a rear light on crowded Charoen Krung Road on Nov 4. In an about-face, Mr Akanat said he went to Yannawa police station on Monday to make an additional statement about the incident. He had made it clear to the police investigator that he did not

want to pursue legal action against Mr Kittisak. Mr Akanat’s lawyer told reporters earlier his client had lodged police complaints seeking charges of careless driving causing property damage and hit-and-run against Mr Kittisak after the motorcyclist had filed a physical assault complaint against Mr Akanat. However, M r A kanat

claimed he had not laid any complaint against Mr Kittisak in the first place. The former TV host, now nicknamed “Nott Kraab Rot” by Thai media, said he tried unsuccessfully to call Mr Kittisak and wanted to visit him at the hospital, but had not been able to. “It’s OK. They may still be very angry with me,” he said.

He reiterated that he would pay all medical expenses for Mr Kittisak’s treatment. Responding to the reporters’ questions Mr Akanat denied he had apologised because of social pressure brought against him. “It is not about social pressure. I feel guilty within myself. I feel it from inside.” He added that he would go and practice dhamma after the incident is settled, but did not say where. Lt Col Adirek Panyai, deputy chief investigator at Yannawa, said the charges Mr Akanat laid against Mr Kittisak were non-compoundable offences and police were dutybound to proceed with the case. The 25-motorcyclist had denied the charges. Mr Akanat was initially charged with assault causing injury. Police later also charged him with forcing a person to act against his will, which carries a maximum three-year prison term and/or a B6,000 fine. His friend who was also present at the road rage incident faces the same charges. Bangkok Post

Police nab suspect after 6-year chase NAKHON RATCHASIMA AFTER SEARCHING FOR six years, police at the Region 3 headquarters in Nakhon Ratchasima announced on Tueday (Nov 15) the arrest of the key suspect in the murder of an Australian man, apparently resulting from road rage. Lt Gen Tawitchat Palasak, the commander of Provincial Police Region 3, announced the capture of the final suspect in the case involving three Thai teenagers and Australian citizen Andrew Oake. Mr Oake was attacked in March 2010 on his way home with his pregnant wife, Nareerat Swengdee, on a motorcycle. The three teens, Suvit Srimoonsri from Buriram, and Somyod Sangchan and Pitak Thonglong, both from Khon Kaen, became angry that they were cut off on the road. The teens allegedly attacked Mr Oake with a machete as he tried to protect Ms Nareerat from harm. Mr Oake suffered brain damage and later died. Suvit and Somyod surrendered to police following pressure from family members and police. However, Pitak ran away from his home town and

After police at Provincial Police Region 3 kept up their probe, Pitak was finally discovered at a construction site in Nakhon Sawan on Oct 13. He was brought back to Prasat district of Surin where the incident took place for further questioning. Pitak is now in prison under a detention order issued by the Criminal Court in Surin until the court reaches a decision. Rory McDonald, the father of Mr Oake who spent the past six years helping to track down the last suspect, said he could not be happier with the police’s work. “The effort they put into this case is amazing. The police at Provincial Police Region 3 and local police in Prasat have

done an excellent job. I’m very happy to see the suspect in the judicial system. I would like to say thank you to the police for the hard work they have done,” Mr McDonald said. Meanwhile, Lt Gen Tawitchat expressed concern regarding the case, saying it could damage the country’s standing internationally as the victim was a foreigner. “This isn’t good for the country’s image. We have many foreigners living here and visiting Thailand every year. I’m glad our investigative team worked together to find the suspect,” Lt Gen Tawitchat said. “It is all thanks to Mr Rory, who never gave up. This arrest had a lot to do with him pushing the case through,” he added. Bangkok Post thephuketnews

Japan’s sinkhole street reopens JAPAN

A

Japanese cit y on Tuesday (Nov 15) reopened a busy street that collapsed into a giant sinkhole, with the efforts of workers who toiled around the clock for a week drawing praise on social media. The sinkhole appeared in the middle of the southern city of Fukuoka last Tuesday (Nov 8), swallowing part of a five-lane street near the main railway station. The gaping hole, around 30 metres wide, exposed support columns of nearby buildings at a traffic intersection, prompting fears of further collapses. TV footage showed two separate holes steadily expanding as they sucked in asphalt and soil in front of the city’s Hakata Station. “It was a bit dark outside, and my first impression was, ‘Is the road really falling?’” a young man who saw the sinkhole develop told public broadcaster NHK. “When I saw it, two holes were already there, and they continued to grow bigger. “I got scared the most

I felt, ‘I have to get out of here,’” he told NHK. The hole continued to expand and by afternoon was around 15 metres deep, and filling with water from broken pipes. Police, who had cordoned

off the area and evacuated buildings, said there had been no reports of any injuries. Fukuoka’s mayor and transport bureau said the ongoing extension to a nearby subway line might have triggered the sinkhole. Construction had to stop early morning when workers saw ground water washing

Dicing with death at fire balloon festival MYANMAR THE SKIES OF CENTRAL Myanmar were set ablaze this week with the beginning of the Taunggyi fire balloon festival, one of the most beautiful and dangerous celebrations in Asia. Brightly coloured balloons with hundreds of homemade fireworks woven into their frames were sent soaring into the night sky, showering down cascades of sparks onto adoring crowds. The explosive-laden balloons regularly crash to the ground, causing panic below, but visitors say the sight is worth the risks. “I’m very happy and also afraid,” 22-year-old Maung Maung Myint, who travelled to the capital of Shan state from Mandalay, said last Friday night (Nov 11). “It’s scary when the fireworks f ly right at me,” he added. The November celebration has become a highlight of the annual Tazaungdaing festival of light that marks the end of Myanmar’s rainy season. While the tradition is rooted in Buddhism, the hot air balloon contest itself was @thephuketnews

Photo: Ye Aung Thu/AFP started by British colonialists in the late 19th century. Visitors from around the world flock to see the extraordinary explosions of light and colour, which police predicted would draw up to 50,000 visitors a day this year. “I’ve never seen so many people. It’s absolutely crazy, but everyone is having a good time,” said Mark Boyd, 41, from Britain’s Isle of Man. “It wouldn’t be allowed in my country. They were dangerous but it was great.” The huge crowds, lack of safety precautions and homemade fireworks have proved deadly in the past. In 2014, three people were killed when a balloon

crashed onto spectators below. A young child also died when a balloon was blown into the family’s tent. And it is not only balloons that set pulses racing. Visitors can also witness more deathdefying feats on a humanpowered Ferris wheel at the festival’s fairground. into the site, shortly before the road began to cave in, according to local media. Fukuoka Mayor Soichiro Takashima told a press conference the city was scrambling to prevent further damage. “We believe the subway construction had some impact,” he said. “A thorough investigation

will be carried out,” he added. Fukuoka is the biggest city on the southernmost main Japanese island of Kyushu. Its railway station is a major intersection, including for the superfast bullet trains that criss-cross the country. Japanese workers toiled continuously for a week, dumping huge amounts of

wet cement and sand into the gaping hole and fixing electricity, gas and water lines that had stopped following the accident. About one-third of the huge hole had been filled in by Wednesday afternoon. “The hole stopped expanding and stabilised by yesterday afternoon. About 35 per cent of the 7,000 cubic-metre hole will be filled this afternoon,” a city official said. “Cr ews a r e wor k i ng around the clock.” The street reopened at 5am Tuesday, Takashima said in a statement, exactly a week after the ground began sinking. “We’re very sorry for causing great trouble,” Takashima said, noting that a ban on access to surrounding buildings was lifted. Miraculously, no one was hurt in the accident, in the biggest city on the southernmost main island of Kyushu. Many on social media expressed amazement at the quick recovery. “I’m surprised the road reopened in a week!” one Twitter user said. “Impressive. That was fast,” said another. AFP

Fighting rising stress levels

Therapists tackling Venezuelans shaken up into an ‘emotional cocktail’ VENEZUELA

I

n Venezuela, if the hunger, armed robbers and medicine shortages don’t kill you, then the demons of depression and anxiety just might. Suffering long queues for rations and one of the world’s highest murder rates, citizens are losing their tempers – and their hope, psychologists warn. Plunged into depression after the death of his mother, a failed relationship and being targeted three times by robbers, Omar Mendoza did what many Venezuelans are doing – he called a therapist. “I had to seek help,” Mendoza, a 45-year-old lawyer, said, sitting in a black leather chair in his therapist’s waiting room. “Everyone is complaining that the situation is getting worse in the street, at home, at work, in the queues. You feel like there is no way out.” A group set up late last year to offer mental health support, Psychologists To The Rescue, says Venezuela

People queue to buy basic food and household items outside a supermarket in Caracas. Photo: Federico Parra/AFP has been shaken up into an “emotional cocktail.” “Stress has shot up in the crisis and tolerance has declined,” says one of its founders, Liliana Castiglione. “We are seeing cases of ulcers, heart attacks, suicides and great aggression in the street,” she said. Rumours of danger spread on the internet, fuelling what she calls Venezuela’s “collective stress”. “Desperation has taken

hold of many people,” says Castiglione. “That is just one step away from depression, which leads to apathy and idleness.” The anger and frustration stemming from Venezuela’s economic crisis and the resulting political tensions are increasingly evident on the once cheerful streets of this South American sunspot. Marling Duran, 27, breaks into a rage when she gets to the front of a long queue outside a

Caracas supermarket, only to find there are no diapers left. She is seven months pregnant and has been waiting in the hot sun for eight hours. “How can that not make me want to cry?” she says. “It makes you furious, queuing for hours and coming away with just one or two items, or nothing. I am tired of this. It goes from bad to worse.” Another top psychological torment is fear – of not find-

ing food and medicine, or of falling victim to crime. Queuing outside the supermarket, Lidubina Calzadilla, 70, already suffers from high blood pressure and a varicose ulcer. Prices for Venezuela’s crucial oil exports have fallen and it cannot import the supplies that patients like her need. The mess is making Calzadilla even more anxious. “I get depressed,” she says. “I get palpitations and I think to myself, am I dying already?” The political opposition blames the chaos on the economic management of socialist President Nicolas Maduro. Tensions have risen as he resists their efforts to call a referendum on removing him from office. Maduro brands the crisis a capitalist conspiracy. He vows to defend the “socialist revolution” launched by his late predecessor Hugo Chavez. His government has set up what it calls a “Vice-Ministry For Supreme Social Happiness of the People”. It is charged with handling social welfare programs for

vulnerable members of society. “We will have a happy Christmas,” Maduro promised recently. Psychologists To the Rescue offers therapy sessions by video call because some patients are afraid to go out at night. Despite surviving three attempted robberies in the street, Mendoza is one of those who comes in person to the office of the group’s co-founder Stefania Aguzzi. Venezuelans have a reputation among Latin Americans for cheerfulness. But Mendoza fears that is changing. He has a daughter of seven and a son of 17, who wants to leave the country for a better life elsewhere. “We are on the verge of collapse. People have lost their sense of belief. The worst thing that can happen to us is that we stop believing,” he says. “But when I go to wash and there is no soap, or I have no deodorant because there is none available, or it is too expensive – then it is very hard to be optimistic.” AFP

Venetians rally to fight city exodus ITALY SE V E R A L H U N DR E D citizens of Venice rallied last Saturday (Nov 12) to draw attention to an exodus of residents that they fear is sucking the life out of the fabled Italy city. Venetians of all ages took part in the “Venexodus” demonstration, clutching signs such as “Farewell, Venice,” and “I won’t go, I will stay and resist,” as well as suitcases to symbolise the constant departures. A man dressed in the historic costume of a doge – the leaders of Venice for more than a thousand years – boarded a gondola to make a symbolic farewell trip from the revered city. More than 60,000 tourists arrive in Venice each day – a tally that now dwarfs the city’s full-time residents. “Venice is losing 1,000 residents each year. It now has less than 55,000 people, compared to 100,000 40 years ago – the danger is very great,” said Matteo Secchi, head of the association venessia.com which organised the rally. Secchi drew a comparison with Pompeii – the preserved

People hold suitcases and signs as they demonstrate against the increasing number of residents leaving their homes in Venice. Photo: Marco Bertorello/AFP Roman town that the volcano Vesuvius destroyed in 79AD. “We are turning into Pompei, a town which people come to visit and say it’s magnificent, but no-one lives there,” Secchi said. “Venetians are not against tourists. It’s right for tourists to visit Venice, but it is also right for its inhabitants to be able to be live there. The challenge is to reconcile these two different worlds.” One of Venetians’ biggest complaints is about housing. The cost of accommodation has rocketed, as private owners rent out apartments for short-term lets. Another gripe is about the

lack of job diversity. “Many of my friends have had to leave the city, not just because of housing problems but also because the only work here is in tourism,” said Marco Vidal, a 35-year-old Venetian. “If you have training in a different field, you are obliged to leave. The local authorities gave up years ago the idea of encouraging people to live in Venice, creating jobs and making it a city with a future, rather than an amusement park.” A delegation of demonstrators was received by the city hall and said later they were encouraged by what had been said. cater to the resort’s holiday making clientele. “Due to our location on the hill, we definitely want to showcase the view, rooftops are very hot in the market, so in our location it would definitely make sense,” he said, while noting that it was still early days in the hotel’s evolution. Other concessions to the hotel’s hillside beach front location include all rooms having balconies, taking advantage of the panoramic views of Patong Bay. There are also 10 Specialty rooms, which adjoin the existing Ocean View rooms, expanding the space available for guests and taking full advantage of the views from the corner of the building. “Normally we don’t have balconies for our Hyatt Place rooms, but because this is a beach resort we have a balcony on every room,” added Mr Berthelot. arlier this year it came to light that most villa or condominium unit owners who are renting out their property on a short-term basis – that is, for periods of 30 days or less – are most likely violating the Hotel Act (2004) if they do so without having received a hotel licence. The potential punishment for such violation includes significant fines, or imprisonment, or both. Historically however, obtaining a hotel licence for most such owners has been very difficult – if not impossible. A major reason for this is that in order to obtain a hotel licence the property must comply with the requirements for certification for use of the property as a hotel under the “BCA” – the Building Control Act (1979). Tourism is one the most

A new ministerial regulation allows some condos that were previously not registered for use under the Hotel Act to be allowed to be rented out for periods of under 30 days. significant contributors to the Thai economy, and many people are tempted to, and currently do, invest in properties to take advantage of this lucrative market without a requisite hotel licence. This has created a tension between the need to enforce the law and the desire to maintain a robust tour-

ism industry and investment market. As we have pointed out previously, one way to accommodate both of these very legitimate and currently competing concerns would be to liberalise restrictions that apply to a variety of such properties. Thus, we are pleased to see that the current government has recently

taken one such step. On August 19, Thailand’s Ministry of Interior Ministerial Regulation Prescribing Descriptions of Other Types of Building Used for a Hotel Business Operation 2016 under the Building Control Act (1979) became effective. This Ministerial Regulation (“MR”) should make it easier for more property owners to obtain a hotel licence. The MR will remain in effect for five years. However, it applies only to buildings that existed before it came into force and whose owners desire to use the property as a “Hotel” (as defined by the Hotel Act) with either: (a) rooms only; or (b) rooms and food service/restaurant facilities. The three categories of buildings that are eligible for this re-classification are as follows: Type 1: a building with not more than two floors and not more than 10 rooms; Type 2: a building that is not a Type 1 building and

which does not have more than 20 rooms; and Type 3: a building that is not a Type 1 building and which does have more than 20 rooms. The MR liberalises the various Hotel usage-building requirements under the BCA for these types of buildings. An application to change the usage a building to a hotel under the BCA must be completed within five years from the date the MR came into force. However, if the building requires structural modification before applying to change its usage to a hotel, that application – or notification under Section 39 (bis) of the BCA – must be filed within two years. It also should be noted that the building must still comply with other BCA regulations regarding hotel usage in force at the time the building was originally constructed (or altered), regarding such matters as the building’s height, setback and parking. In closing, it should be

noted that the MR does not mean that all owners who want to rent out their properties on a short-term basis and whose properties already do or can be registered to comply with the MR will now be able to legally do so. There are other laws that need to be considered and which may restrict such use – particularly with regard to condominiums, and all the more so with regard to foreigners. Thus, caution and clarity are advisable before taking steps to take advantage of the MR. That said, the MR is a very welcome step in the right direction for the tourism and real-estate investment markets in Thailand. ocal dog trainer, and regular contributor to The Phuket News, Russell D Russell recently earned international accreditation as a professional dog training expert. Russell recently qualified as a Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA) through the internationally recognised Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, based in New York. “I decided to take the step of getting this qualification because it’s the only truly, internationally accredited qualification in the industry, which is otherwise largely unregulated. Particularly here in Thailand, anyone can claim to be a ‘dog trainer’ without any training or qualifications – having the CCPDTKA title sets me apart,” said Russell The knowledge assessed (KA) certification assesses the instructor’s dog training skills, learning theory, ethology, equipment and animal husbandry skills. “It’s an in-depth examination, which you can only apply for after providing documentation of hundreds of hours of case studies working with various dogs and clients,” said Russell “The exam itself covers a range of topics from Learning Theory, Behaviour Modification to Canine Psychology. “It also helped me improve my knowledge and keep up to date with international best practice – which is key, we never stop learning,” he added. The Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers was founded in 2001 with the stated goal of “designing an independent, self-supporting certification program meaningful to trainers, other related professionals.” According to their mission statement the CCPDT is “committed to promoting and upholding ethical practices in the dog training profession”. “I am happy to be associated with this accreditation because they espouse a scientific approach to the profession and also assist us trainers by having a

Candidates who pass the exam earn the title Certified Professional Dog Trainer — Knowledge Assessed and may use the designation “CPDT-KA” after their names. All certified trainers must earn continuing education credits to maintain their designations or take the examination again in three years. Russell has had a lifelong interest in animal training and has been running his dog training business in Phuket, Canine Point Academy, for seven years. “I’ve been in Phuket 11 years, but only setup my academy full time in 2009. I have two of my own dogs, and Sassy is often out and about with me, he said. “I became a dog trainer because I not only love working with dogs, but also thoroughly enjoy watching people learn why their dogs are acting the way they do. A true passion project

Local singer-songwriter Vicki Keily could be up for a Grammy award

T

he Phuket News recently spoke to Phuket-based singersongwriter and animal rights activist Vicki Keily whose new album Mercy is in consideration for the Grammy awards. We spoke to Vicki about her nomadic musical life and her passion for animal welfare, which sees her regularly travelling to Japan to fight against the global captive dolphin industry.

chick through and through.

First of all a little background. Where were you born and where did you grow up? I was born in Toronto to Irish parents, and spent the first nine years of my life there. We moved to Saudi Arabia when I was nine years old, and lived in Riyadh for many years. During this time I went to boarding school at the age of 13 in Loreto Abbey, Dublin, Ireland, and I continued my third level education there in Theatre Studies and Acting at the Gaiety School of Acting. I did my Drama Teaching Diploma at The Royal Irish Academy of Music. I then formed a band called The 42s with some of my guy friends and we gigged all over Ireland for many years. It was a fun punk rock vibe. I also did solo singer-songwriter gigs.

I understand that you are in consideration for four categories in the Grammy awards, it must be exciting news, what is the process? Now I am just sending my album out to as many people who might be NARAS members (Grammy voters) as possible, and promoting myself on social media. My manager Don Lichterman in NYC, and my record label Sunset Records are also pushing me big time, of course, with their connections. I am getting lots of radio play around the globe so that is awesome. I can’t believe this is happening to be honest. I am also an animal welfare activist and work for the Ric O’Barry Dolphin Project as a Cove Monitor in Japan. I wrote this album to help raise money for Dolphin Project whom I volunteer for in Japan to try to end the brutal slaughter of hundreds of dolphins there every year. They eat the meat there, but the main issue is captivity, and Taiji in Japan is the biggest seller of captive trained dolphins in the world... so I go there to try to stop it. I wanted to raise awareness and thought I would use my music to do that. I never in a million years thought I would get to be considered for the 59th Grammys. It is very overwhelming and humbling.

Who are some of you favourite musicians and how they have influenced you? Wow, tough question... So many! Growing up I was engrossed with Irish traditional music as I said, but my Dad also loved The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, just to name a few. In my teens I was obsessed with Guns N’ Roses, The Pixies, The Ramones, The Clash, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, U2, Greenday, and of course Nirvana. I was a rock

Vicki is passionate about animal welfare issues. @thephuketnews

What brought you to Phuket and how long have you been here? I came to Phuket after living in Hong Kong for eight years. I got divorced there after having two children and life is very expensive in that city. We had a family home here in Phuket and I really love being around nature. I feel very connected to Thailand, we have been here almost three years now and love it.

Is ‘Mercy’ your first album? What would you say are some of its themes and influences? It is my first album yes, although I have been writing it for years. Some of the songs I wrote in my early 20s, and it has been a work in progress since then. About four of the songs I wrote this year, but the rest are over the last 15-20 years. My themes without planning them to be this way, are fighting injustice, having faith in yourself, standing up for what is right, and a couple about love. I recorded my album with the abundantly talented Gary Crause at Legend Studios. Gary did a stellar job producing my album, as did the outstanding musicians Mike Mitchell, Rob Cooke and Blaze Crause on all my tracks. Thank you so much guys! You made my dream a reality. Where did your passion for animal welfare start and how does it influence your music? I don’t just work for Dolphin Project, I also try to create awareness about all animals, and treating them compassionately. I was the one who started the campaign earlier this year to rescue the Orangutan “Milo” from Phuket Zoo. I started a petition, and we created massive global awareness. The zoo dumped

her in the jungle, and we got her to the rescue centre, where she lived three months, but unfortunately died of a stroke after a while due to many underlying problems from her mistreatment at the zoo. I feel that my music allows me to express my need to right the wrongs of the world. I am so passionate about justice being served, and I always root for the underdog. I see so much abuse here in Thailand unfortunately, with the elephants, the monkeys, the crocodiles, you name it! I wish I could do more. My music helps me release my frustrations and I hope it strikes a chord with people when they listen to it. Where can people listen to and buy your music? You can buy it on iTunes and hear it on Spotify. Please purchase it, as proceeds of the sales go directly to Ric O’Barry Dolphin Project, to help with our ongoing and crucial work at Taiji Cove in Japan, the Solomon Islands, and wherever dolphins are in trouble in the world. Thank you so much for taking the time to talk to us Vicki and good luck with the Grammy awards next year, I’m sure everyone in Phuket will be hoping you win.

A hidden slice of paradise JAMIE’S PHUKET

Jamie Monk editor1@classactmedia.co.th

Despite being a very busy tourist island, Phuket and its surrounding regions do have many quiet areas and some very tranquil beaches.

L

et me start by saying that despite living in Phuket, which is well known for it’s beaches, we (as a family) are not really beach people. We don’t really ever “go to the beach” – certainly not for a whole day. Maybe we used to visit beaches more often when the kids were small, like 8-10 years ago, but even then we preferred small beaches with no crowds. Despite being a very busy tourist island, Phuket and its surrounding regions do have many quiet areas and some very tranquil beaches. We first found Laem Ka beach in 2006, which was the year I started doing my blog, so we started exploring Phuket a lot more. Although we’d been around the Rawai beach area many times, we had no idea that Laem Ka existed. Well, I was heading to Rawai a few days ago, mainly to photograph the mosques, but I figured it would be good to check out Laem Ka again. I had heard over the last few years that it had gotten busy with speedboats. Coming from Chalong, the tiny road down to Laem Ka is almost at Rawai Beach. The car park is still bare and dusty. There is still an old open front shack above the beach as there was ten years ago, but no sign of any vendors selling food or drinks. A few steps lead down from the car park to the sea. It was high tide, plus (being low season) a few waves. The rocky area where my kids played ten years ago was not accessible. Crowded? No. People had told me about speedboats, but maybe because it’s low season and with a few small waves, not safe for the speedboats to land. I’ll have to check again in high season. The rocky area (with patches of sand) is to the right of the steps. With that being underwater, I turned left. There was one local family there, plus two foreign couples (another couple arrived with a guide/driver and only stayed a few minutes for a photo) and there was a bunch of

Laem Ka Beach, not far from Rawai, is blissfully quiet and peaceful. Photo: Jamie Monk little local kids – some clothed, some not – running around playing football and jumping in the sea. A sunny low season day would seem to be ideal for a visit to Laem Ka Beach. The whole beach is only about 150 metres long. The rocky area is at the south end, and at the north end is a rather dilapidated looking building. Just north of that is the old Evason resort which closed a few years ago, but

is due to re-open in 2019 as the Intercontinental Phuket Resort. There are some basic wooden stalls at the back of the beach. On the day I visited (one of those not so uncommon perfect blue sky low season days) Laem Ka Beach was paradise. Jamie Monk blogs about all things Phuket. Work to live or live to work?

Applying Buddhist principles at your job could lessen your stress ALL ABOUT BUDDHISM Jason A. Jellison mitnoy@live.com

I

t was a cold, snowy day 10 years ago and I had just trudged to work through a storm. As I walked into the building and shook the snow off of my coat, my co-worker Phillip came in and greeted me with his predictable chronological morning greeting. “Seven-hundred-nineteen-days until I can retire!” I saw this morning show so often that I always knew which episode we would be tuning into. I was well-aware of the number of days he had to go until he could retire. One day, just out of curiosity, I asked him why it was that he took a job that he disliked so much. “Well, isn’t it obvious? For the money, stupid!” Dissatisfaction at work, to some extent, is simply unavoidable. Buddha offers many insights as to why this is so. However, the best summary of the matter that I can think of actually comes from Christianity. Those of us who are from the West are most likely aware of the story of Adam and Eve. As the story goes, the only man who really had an opportunity to choose right from wrong was Adam. All other men, such as you and I, can only choose between different shades of wrong thanks to the Fall of Man. In its own way, Buddhism teaches the same thing. Buddha taught that we are stuck in a circle of re-birth because of our past mistakes. Well, that has some similarity to the story of Adam and Eve. Regardless of which view you take, the result is the same. We only can choose between various shades of wrong. Ergo, you’re going to have problems at work because the men and women in your midst will only choose between various shades of wrong. While there is no utopia, there can be happiness. For young readers, I’d like to offer one personal note of advice. Consider doing whatever it is that makes you happy for a living. A lot of people are like my old co-worker take jobs because they pay well. But, the problem is that you will actually spend more time as an adult at work than you do with your family, so what you do and who you work with is a key driver of happiness. Far too often have I encountered

Do you love your job? Photo: Nik Gaffney @thephuketnews

people who take a miserable job because it pays the bills, then try to make themselves happy by purchasing lots of expensive stuff, and go in a never-ending circle. In the end, I know far more unhappy rich people than I do poor. Material goods are a road straight to stress and unhappiness but goods of the soul are the key to peace and happiness. Don’t worry about the numbers. At the end, your life will be happier and the numbers will fall into balance, or much better. Happy people attract other happy people, and vice-versa. In short – don’t worry, be happy. For older readers, the question might be something like, “I’m already miserable at work, what can Buddhism do about it?” The answer is a lot, actually. First of all, coming to Buddhism because you’re unhappy at work is a very good reason to try to discover something new. As Einstein famously said, “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Change is, in fact, the right medicine. You need a new series of steps, but which steps? You can start by reading all of the articles I have written, they’re freely available on The Phuket News website. Then, you need to find a Temple and an Enlightened teacher. I can share the basics, but I’m no substitute for someone who has found Enlightenment. He’ll teach you about using proper speech, proper actions and empathy to help ease the situation. Assuming you do all of that, then you’ll come to an inevitable fork in the road: You can either leave the job in favour of a new one or you can go the path of using Buddhist Principles to overcome your unhappiness at work. Every person has to answer that question for themselves. However, if you’ve not yet become involved with Buddhism, I’d suggest option A. Many Temples would suggest option B, but I don’t think that will work well for an inexperienced Westerner. It takes many, many years to master the principals of Buddhism. In fact, many people can’t even perfect it in a lifetime. If it’s going to be years before you can master the input, then simply alter the input. My life was not going so well in America, so I went back to school somewhere beautiful. I changed the input. However, if you can’t change the input, then the key to happiness lies in accepting both the good and bad in life. You may be able to change your work environment but it is important that you don’t put change off for another day, because another day becomes yet another day, and so on. My English translation of the Teaching of Buddha #80 (Dharma 80) says: “Irrigators lead water. Fletchers fashion shafts. Carpenters bend wood. The wise tame themselves.” If you are wise,

Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life. Photo: Theis Kofoed Hjorth you’ll tame your problems at work and not cause problems for others. Basic Buddhism could have a big impact regardless of if you stay or go. In closing, I’d like to share a few words about the importance of time. When I was young, my grandmother said to me, “Jason, do you know what the worst two words in the world are?” “No,” I replied. “The worst two words in the world are... too late.” Matters of the soul cannot be held until another day. Instead of being one among millions who says “719 days until I can

retire” wouldn’t your life be immeasurably better if you could be one of the handful who says, “719 days until they make me retire.” Now there is something to think about. All About Buddhism is a monthly column where I take readers on my exotic journey into Thai Buddhism and debunk a number of myths about Buddhism. If you have any specific queries, or ideas for articles, please let us know. Email: editor1@classactmedia.co.th, and we will do our best to accommodate your interests.

PCG take on ANZA

Singaporean cricket side visit ACG for second game in tour season CRICKET Mark Whetton editor3@thephuketnews.com

T

he Phu ket Cr icket Group (PCG) last Saturday (Nov 12) played host to another tour side at the Alan Cooke Ground (ACG). This time it was the turn of the Australian and New Zealand Association (ANZA) side from Singapore who have been regular visitors to Phuket over past years. A sunny day greeted the players, somewhat of a relief after all the monsoon rains of late, and the outfield was ideal for boundaries. The format was a 30 innings match. PCG skipper S Wetherell won the toss and elected to bat first, but things got off to a rocky start when he was caught off the bowling of J Dick for a duck after facing just three balls. However S Ullah joined the other PCG opener I Mushtaq and together they put on a 53 run partnership before Mushtaq was bowled just three runs short of a well-constructed half century. PCG were 67/2 after eight overs. A not he r pa r t ne r sh ip looked promising between Ullah and S Hamilton before Ullah fell for 11 off the bowling of M Madni. Hamilton followed just four runs later, also the victim of Madni’s

Members of both the Phuket Cricket Group and Australian and New Zealand Association pose after the game. bowling. Another quick wicket of S Gaur for just three runs saw the PCG side teetering at 87/5 at the half way stage of the innings which put ANZA comfortably in the driver’s seat. But local league regulars M Rehman and S Kumar had other ideas and steadied the PCG ship with intelligent batting to take the score to 142 before Kumar was stumped for 11. Not a large score, but Kumar certainly gave Rehman the support he needed before Rehman was run out in the last over of the PCG innings for 38. Also chipping in with the bat was A Khan who made a quick-fire 28 taking the PCG total to a respectable

190 from their 30 overs. The wickets were shared around between the ANZA bowlers, but Norris and Madni both picked up a brace from their six overs each and going for 43 and 23 runs respectively. After lunch ANZA took to the middle to chase down 191 runs for a win. The opening batsmen got the side off to a steady but cautious start to keep up with the required run rate, which at the start of the innings was 6.37 runs per over. The first wicket to fall occurred straight after the 10 over drinks break when a mix up between the openers saw Mufti stranded at the wrong end of the wicket after

making 12 runs. A Sankath followed 19 runs later when he was caught for just seven runs. ANZA were 81/2 after 13 overs. Ten runs later the other ANZA opening batsman, A Khuller, found himself back in the pavilion after a sharp catch by Ullah at mid-wicket after a well-earned 52 runs. This happened to be the highest score from any batsman for the day. However, ANZA were right on track to reach the required target when after the halfway mark they were 92 runs for three wickets. In-form batsman G Forday joined ANZA skipper C Gupta at the crease and between them they constructed a 34

run partnership to put the side on the better side of the run rate equation. But when Gupta (18) skied one to deep long-on where Wetherell took a brilliant catch, the tide quickly turned for the ANZA lads. Some inspiring full length bowling from Khan saw him demolish the stumps of Forday (26), Madni (4) and G Hawker (1) in quick succession, and ANZA soon found themselves on 141/7 after the end of the 25th over. They were soon joined in the clubhouse by D Norris in the next over who went for a duck with just one run added to the total. With four overs remaining,

48 runs required, and just two wickets left, the task looked too large to overcome for ANZA, and after D Mydeen departed after hitting a couple of lofty sixes, ANZA simply ran out of overs and found themselves 21 runs short of their target after their allotment 30 overs. Pick of the PCG bowlers was Khan who collected four wickets for just eight runs off three overs. He was also the Man of the Match. So what at one stage was looking to be a comfortable win for the visitors quickly turned pear shaped when Khan got his chance with the ball. Needless to say it was a great game played in good spirit and enjoyed by all. Tomorrow (Nov 18) sees another regular touring side, the prestigious Singapore Cricket Club, return to Phuket to compete for the annual “Sensible” Cup. Start time for this match will be 11:30am at the ACG. The PCG are always looking for new players and officials to assist with the running of cricket on the island. For further information about cricket on Phuket, visit the PCG web-site at www.phuketcricket.com or e-mail the PCG committee at phuketcricketgroup@gmail.com. They can also be found on Facebook.

BISP Soccer 7s set to return FOOTBALL

Matt Pond editor3@classactmedia.co.th

T

he British International School, Phuket’s annual Soccer 7s returns for its 15th year later this month with more teams, players and coaching staff than ever before set to hit the school’s pitches over the weekend of November 25-26. A total of 37 schools from countries including China, Malaysia, Vietnam and Sri Lanka have already entered teams for this year’s tournament, meaning that close to 1,600 players and 64 coaches will taking part in what has grown to be the largest such schools tournament in Asia. After last year’s competition was rained off, BISP still remain title holders in the main O15 competition after winning the title back in 2014, but teams from schools including Epsom College in Malaysia, Dulwich College Seoul, Stonehill International School and British School in Colombo will all be vying for the title in all age groups ranging from boys and girls U9s right up to boys and girls O15s. Speaking to The Phuket News, BISP Soccer Sevens Tournament Director and one of the event’s founders, Jeff

The BISP O15 team will be looking to hold on to the title they won on 2014 after last year’s tournament was rained off. Photo British International School, Phuket LaMantia, said, “I was one of the founders of the BISP Soccer 7s back in 2001. We started this tournament to give young footballers in Phuket the chance to compete against the best youth schools teams in Asia. “These were grand ambitions, but 15 years later we’re immensely proud to be welcoming more than 1,600 competitors playing for over 140 teams from 37 international schools, based in 12 different countries – a truly remarkable gathering of young talent in one place. “This year we have moved

the dates of the tournament to the last weekend in November to ensure a weekend of sunshine, after the deluge that brought an unfortunate end to last year’s tournament – though the rains didn’t dampen spirits in 2015, as the players memorably turned our pitches into a slip-and-slide! BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy Director Richard Stockings added, “After an extremely wet few weeks we are hoping for some sunshine to dry out the pitches, but we remain excited about the

forthcoming BISP Soccer 7s. “November is traditionally a month where our community comes together to support everyone involved in the school. Good luck to all our teams, and I hope everyone plays with passion and pride. “However, with good weather on the horizon, this year we are looking forward to two full days of fantastic football, plenty of skill, and – most importantly – good sportsmanship,” he said. Speaking about how he sees the BISP teams perform-

ing in this year’s tournament, Jonathas Candido, Head Football Coach of BISP told The Phuket News, “We always expect the teams to perform well, but this year will be trickier for us than previous competitions. “We have had more rain this year, and because our main sports hall has been undergoing major renovations we have missed a lot of practice sessions over the past three months. We have hired other facilities to try to help us be able to continue practice, and we have also played a warm up competition in Bangkok. So preparations for this year’s competition have not been ideal, but it has been okay,” he said. “At the end of last year the older teams played in quite a lot of competitions, so they should be in good shape to perform well,” he added. When asked how he felt the pitches would fair up this year, Candido said, “At the moment it looks like they will be in good shape. We moved the tournament back three weeks this year to try to avoid the rain, and right now the pitches are looking good.” As for what’s next on the agenda the BISP teams, Candido said that all age groups have tournaments lined up. Seniors will be taking part

in a local tournament run by Rajabhat University. “This will be a good competition for us because the team that wins the trophy will go to Bangkok to receive it from a member of the Royal Family. This is very good for anyone who wins when it comes to recognition, that is very important,” he said. “We will also be taking part in competitions at Thanyapura just before Christmas, this will be followed by a short festive season break, then the teams have a full calendar of practice sessions and matches lined up for the New Year,” he added. As is the standard every year for the BISP Soccer 7s, this year’s tournament will be played to 7-a-side Fifa rules with no offside. The back pass rule will apply and there will be rolling substitutions, which must take place from the halfway line – the player must leave the field before the substitute can enter play. It is the responsibility of each of the team’s coaches to ensure players leave the field of play and administered substitutions. A goal can be scored directly from the centre pass, and the Mercy Rule will apply when a team is up by six goals. The game will continue but the score stands as soon as the goal difference is six.

Right down to the wire Hamilton beats Rosberg to take F1 championship to final race FORMULA ONE BOX OF NEUTRALS Michael Lamonato michael@boxofneutrals.com

razil rarely fails to provide exciting racing, and last Sunday (Nov 13), the famed Interlagos circuit didn’t disappoint. The heady combination of a soaked circuit, a finely poised championship stoush, and a retiring local hero made for an unmissable spectacle that would have fans forgiven for thinking the race was the season finale rather than the penultimate round. Lewis Hamilton, starting the weekend 19 points adrift of title rival teammate Nico Rosberg, shaded the second Mercedes car from practice to qualifying, the Briton knowing that anything other than a win would almost certainly put paid to his bid for a fourth championship. But when precipitous tension preceded literal precipita-

Contrasting with Rosberg’s affinity for Mercedes’s 2015 car in the dry has been the German’s inability to maximise his machine in wet conditions, and the heavy rain, sufficiently intense to require two half-hour suspensions, threatened to put him not only out of victory

contention but out of the race altogether. While Hamilton cruised effortlessly in the lead – “I was just chilling up front … it was a very easy race generally,” he said on the podium – Rosberg struggled to generate traction out of the circuit’s waterlogged corners, and he almost lost his car completely charging around the circuit’s treacherous turn 13-14-15 ascent to the start-

finish straight. “For sure it was very difficult conditions out there, and I can live with second today for sure,” Rosberg said relievedly after his white-knuckle afternoon that left him with 12 points to defend at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The championship tussle continued apace, but Max Verstappen, who completed the podium, threatened to write

his own twist on the narrative. On a weekend Mercedes boss Toto Wolff had warned Verstappen’s father, Jos, that his son’s eager antics threatened to adulterate the straight fight between the two championship protagonists, teenager Max had no hesitation steaming around the outside of Rosberg at turn three and chomping at Hamilton’s lead after a mid-distance safety car. A second career win looked on the cards, but Verstappen’s chances were undone when he gambled on an early switch to the intermediate tyre in an attempt to outfox Hamilton. As the rain began intensifying the Dutchman quickly realised his tyres were inadequate for the conditions. A costly additional stop dropped him to P16 – but that was where his race really started. With 17 laps remaining the Dutchman unleashed on his barely-used tyres, sparing not his teammate, not the hard-fighting Sebastian Vettel, and not the rules of physics, according Wolff, on his quest to recover his lost podium.

It was a drive likened to some of Senna’s best races, the Brazilian icon synonymous with daring feats of wet-weather racing. But while F1 basked in the glow of Verstappen’s ascending star it simultaneously bade emotional farewell to one of its dearest racers, and retiring Williams driver Felipe Massa made no effort to hide his tears after crashing out of his final home grand prix. In a bittersweet twist, the crash, which prompted a safety car, gave him the unusual opportunity to walk alongside the circuit, complete with a Brazilian flag, and soak up the adoration of his fans. Mechanics in the pit lane gave him an impromptu guard of honour on his way to embracing his wife and son in a heartbreakingly human midrace moment. The Brazilian Grand Prix rarely fails to deliver, and 2016 proved no exception. Tune in to Live89.5 every Saturday from 9am to hear Box of Neutrals talk F1 and more.

India v. England, Day 4

“safe standing” areas will be on the agenda of a Premier League shareholders’ meeting. Moves to make all-seater stadiums compulsory in the top division of English football followed a recommendation made by Lord Justice Peter Taylor’s report into the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, which saw 96 Liverpool fans standing on a terrace at Sheffield Wednesday’s ground effectively crushed to death. Yet with many traditional English football fans feeling priced out of the cost of a ticket for a Premier League game, calls have grown in recent areas to introduce the kind of ‘rail seats’ popular at many German and Scandinavian clubs. These are seats that can be flipped up and locked in place, providing space to stand behind a waist-high rail that runs along the back of the row in front. Every “seat” is linked to a ticket number and there is no overall increase in capacity. But with memories of Hillsborough revived by the recently-concluded new inquest into the tragedy,

there are those who argue the British Government will not move to change the law for fear of creating the conditions for another disaster. Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said the issue, however, could no longer be ignored. “We’re not immune to the fact that this is a topic and therefore it is in discussion with our clubs,” Scudamore told Sky Sports News. “They are all looking at the issue and at some point it will come around our table and we will see if there’s a point at which we might open up discussions with government to see what their view is on it. “It’s very much individual clubs sensing for themselves where they are with it and we may or may not facilitate that discussion in the weeks and months to come.” Meanwhile, Sam Allardyce will not face a police investigation over the newspaper sting operation that saw his time as England manager brought to an end after just one game in charge, it was announced last Friday. Allardyce, 62, was sacked

following the publication by the Daily Telegraph in September of controversial comments made to undercover reporters. He was secretly filmed discussing loopholes in thirdparty ownership transfer rules and mocking England predecessor Roy Hodgson. Appointed England manager on a £3 million-a-year contract (B132mn), Allardyce also agreed to travel to Singapore and Hong Kong as an ambassador for their fictitious firm for a fee of £400,000 (B17.6mn). The Telegraph report into Allardyce, which led to his sacking by the Football Association, was part of a wider investigation into alleged

corruption in English football. City of London Police said that they had opened a criminal investigation into a single suspected case of bribery following The Telegraph's reports. But the force made it clear Allardyce was not involved. “I welcome today’s confirmation from City of London Police that I will not be the subject of a police investigation, Allardyce said in a statement. “I was always confident that this would be the case as there was no evidence against me. I now ask that the Football Association deals with this matter as quickly as possible.” AFP

Aussie cricketers face backlash from media after fifth test defeat CRICKET

A

ustralia’s media lashed out at the country’s “mollycoddled” cricketers on Wednesday (Nov 16), saying they were a “disgrace” and heads should roll after crashing to a fifth successive Test defeat. With the sport in crisis after a dismal performance against South Africa in the first two Tests of a three-Test series, the press was unrelenting in its criticism. “Humiliating”, the Sydney Morning Herald screamed in a front page headline, while The Australian said: “Disgrace to the Baggy Green”. The tabloid Sydney Daily Telegraph called the team “a bunch of amateurs”, with cricket writer Robert Craddock saying they had become pampered and lost their backbone. “Australian cricket is facing its greatest crisis in 30 years, and it only has itself to blame,” he said, adding that there were no longer any of the “flint hard

Test players that once did our nation proud.” “Australia’s players are overpaid and mollycoddled to the point where the priceless quality that separates the great from the good – resilience – is almost invisible. “Australia is facing the reality that old fashioned, stone-faced Test match warriors like Allan Border and Steve Waugh are a dying breed.” Sydney Morning Herald cricket correspondent Greg Baum followed a similar theme after another batting collapse in Hobart on Monday (Nov 14) sent them spiralling to an innings and 80 run defeat. “It is the meekness that was so shocking. For so long, the Australian cricket team’s hallmark has been its swagger and braggadocio,” he said. “Even when charging, all guns blazing, to occasional defeat, it was unapologetic about it. It was ‘the way we play’”: an unofficial motto. “No longer.”

All major newspaper agreed change must happen, and fast. “The captain has no answers. The coach has no answers. The men in suits are boarding planes,” said The Australian’s senior sports writer Peter Lalor. “Heads have to roll, but no matter how many sacrifices are made, it will not satisfy the blood lust of the public, of whose game they are the guardians.” Coach Darren Lehmann on Monday declared only four players were sure to keep their places for the third Test in Adelaide next week. Skipper Steve Smith, opener David Warner and bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood are seen as safe. Lalor added “an examination of the tenure of the CEO, the high-performance manager and Lehmann himself must also be on the cards”. “There is a pattern developing, and it is an ugly one,” he said. Thais hold Aussies to 2-2 draw FOOTBALL

ON AN EMOTIONAL EVening on Tuesday (Nov 15), Thailand put up a great fight to draw 2-2 with Australia in a World Cup qualifier at Rajamangala National Stadium. It was one of Thailand’s best results in recent memory and gave them their first point in Group B of Asia’s third qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup. On the other hand, the result shattered the Socceroos’ hopes of advancing

to the 2018 finals. Japan defeated Group B leaders Saudi Arabia 2-1 to move into second place on goal difference. Just two teams will advance to World Cup 2018 in Russia. Thailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang had vowed to get a result for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away last month, and his men did just that. Ahead of the game, local fans held a candle-lit mourning event for the beloved late monarch outside the stadium, while players of both teams wore black armbands.

In a see-saw match, the Socceroos went ahead after just eight minutes when Thailand defender Prathum Chuthong handled the ball in the area and Mile Jedinak opened the scoring from the resulting penalty. Striker Teerasil Dangda equalised for the Thais after 20 minutes when he tapped in a cross to Tristan Do. T h e Wa r Ele p h a n t s stunned the Aussies again in the 55th minute when Teerasil scored from a penalty after Theerthon Bunmathan was fouled by Milos Degenek. But Jedinak made it 2-2,

also from a spot kick, in the 67th minute. In the other Group B game, in Saitama, Japan edged Saudi Arabia 2-1. A first-half penalty from Hiroshi Kiyotake and Genki Haraguchi’s goal with 11 minutes remaining gave the Japanese a much-needed win. Omar Hawsawi scored for Saudi Arabia with a minute left. Saudi Arabia captain Osama Hawsawi was sent off for a clumsy challenge in injury time. After five matches, Japan and Saudi Arabia each have

2018 World Cup. The two third-place teams meet in a play-off with the winners facing a Concacaf team for another berth. Bangkok Post thephuketnews
