huket Vice Governor Jamroen Tippayapongthada showed his frustration in a meeting on September 10 addressing the persistent problem of former beach operators insisting on going back to their old jobs at their original locations. Also joining the meeting at the

Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation was Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup, as well as representatives from each of the island’s municipalities and district offices where people have been affected by the recent Royal Thai Army-driven beach crack-down and clean-up. The objective was to discuss a solution for some 1,441 beach operators who have remained jobless for

over three months, since they were ordered off the beaches. “After we reviewed the people who registered for help from us, we found that there are two kinds of people in registration: really poor people and ‘wannabe’ poor people,” said a representative from Thalang District Office. So how can we find the solution?” Hearing this, Phuket Vice Governor Jamroen Tippayapongthada became upset. “Anyone in the meeting, please tell me, which law supports the right of locals to occupy public land?”

Beer maker in trouble over Veg Festival flags THE PROVINCIAL HEALTH Department (PHD) is to take legal action against ThaiBev, the brewer of Chang Beer, after the beer logo appeared on flags for the Vegetarian Festival all over Phuket Town. The Jui Tui shrine is also named in the PHD complaint. On Wednesday afternoon (September 17) Dr Krit Sakulpad from the PHD lodged a complaint with Phuket Town police that ThaiBev was using the Vegetarian Festival to promote its beer. Dr Krit said this contravened the 2009 law controlling the consumption of alcohol and banning most advertising of alcohol. He said the authorities will push for the arrest of anyone breaking this law, which man-

dates penalties of up to a year in jail or fines of up to B500,000 Doctor Krit added, “This is a great festival and one main focus should be to discourage people from consuming alcohol and to be free of sin. A spokesperson for ThaiBev told The Phuket News yesterday morning (September 18) that he was unaware of the complaint. “I will check your news reports and pass this on to a person who can make an official comment,” he said. He added, “Every time we sponsor an event we will check carefully before using our logo. The blue background logo is for Chang water and the green background is for beer. It may be the result of a mistake at the coordination stage.”

overnor Maitri Inthusut looks set to be promoted to Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, having been listed among senior civil service appointments to be submitted for approval to HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Gov Maitri is proposed by the new Interior Minister, former Army Chief Gen Anupong Paochinda, to replace Prapas Boonyindee, who is to retire on September 30. Khao Sod newspaper reported that Gov Maitri himself will be replaced by Nisit Jansomwong, currently Governor of Ratchaburi Province. On Tuesday afternoon, (September 16) Gov Maitri initially claimed not to know anything about the promotion. “I don’t even know about it and I have not heard about the promotion yet – not until there is an official letter announcing it” Smiling, he added, “We have a long story to talk about soon, but it is too early to say anything at this stage.”

Get another job, Jamroen tells beach operators Continued from page 1 “If I could, I would manage all public land for all the people to share and use it. But in fact, this isn’t the case. They [the disgruntled, jobless beach vendors] must accept this point!” he stated firmly. “They should find another job, otherwise, as they are always saying, they will have no money. I’ll keep an eye on them. Are they going to die if they cannot have their previous job?” The District Office chiefs were assigned to monitor the beaches in their areas. As for coming negotiations, “On September 22, we will start at Thalang district first, since Laguna agreed to hire all of the beach masseurs to be their staff and they also provided places for taxi ranks,” V/ Gov Jamroen said. “After that we will use this model [solution] to apply for Muang Phuket and Kathu districts.” he noted.

While governors are usually appointed for four-year terms, Phuket has become a revolving door. In the past 15 years only Tri Augkaradecha stayed for the full four years. Others stayed as little as four months before being moved on.

house was undergoing construction and was around 90 per cent complete. The house belonged to Pichaporn Katruter who was in Australia with her husband at the time of the incident. Two fire trucks took 30 minutes to put out the fire which was believed to have started with a short

circuit in the electrical control room for air conditioning and hot water. Supat Comtor, 42, the construction foreman said, “We were picking up some things when we smelt something burning from the attic. We called the police as soon as we saw the fire.”

At 11:30am, a police patrol called for reinforcements after witnessing two men breaking into a house. Reinforcements arrived, the two ran, but officers caught Somkiet Kumbaan, 40. THE REGIONALLY REnowned radio station Live 89.5, which is owned by Class Act Media, was given the go-ahead on Wednesday (September 17) to resume broadcasting by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission. The station was one of some 4,000 privately owned radio stations nationwide that was ordered off the air following the May 22 coup, in order to clarify the regulatory framework of the nation’s broadcasting environment under the new administration. Class Act Media Managing Director Simon Samaan said: “We are delighted with this development. Live 89.5, the only radio station in Phuket that operates fully in English, is now broadcasting again. And from today we will be able to resume our role of providing our listeners – mostly expats – with a

valuable and much-missed entertainment and important news and information, especially concerning local and national events from the government.” Moreover Live 89.5 will feature a new face in its famed team, Phil Brandel, who will be hosting the Breakfast Show. Meanwhile, the usual and familiar line-up will also be back on air, including Tim Shaw and Jason Wilder. A key development is that the station is now broadcasting the BBC World News on the hour, every hour, from 7am daily. “Phuket’s got its radio station back. Best news I’ve heard all day,” commented listener Ady Hughes, who learned of Live 89.5’s longanticipated comeback from a friend working at Class Act Media, shortly after the news broke.

Tourist Police rewarded for arrest of child pornographer TOURIST POLICE COMMANDER COL Jirapop Phuridet on September 11 received a recognition certificate from the USA’s Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for his part in the arrest of a wanted Ukrainian man in Phuket in 2009. At the request of the US, Col Jirapop assisted in the arrest of Maxsim Shynkarenko, who had fled to Phuket after a US court issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of distributing child pornography via the internet for profit. In the culmination of a three-year investigation in the US, Shynkarenko was indicted in 2008 on one count of conspiracy to transport and ship child pornography; 16 counts of transportation and shipment of child pornography; one count of conspiracy to advertise child pornography; 12 counts of advertising child pornography; one count of engaging in child exploitation enterprise; and one count of money laundering. Col Jirapop arrested Shynkarenko in January 2009 at a rented house in Chalong. Shynkarenko then spent three years fighting extradition. He lost, and was handed over to the US. In August 2012, Shynkarenko, labelled by US authorities as “the most significant distributor of child pornography ever prosecuted in the US”, was arraigned and in January this year he pleaded guilty. In April he was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Marine park fees set for big hike in 2015 Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th

A

hefty hike in fees for the Similan Islands National Park, the Surin Islands and Phang Nga Bay will become effective on February 1 next year. The current entrance fee for foreigners is B400 for adults and B200 for children. For Thais the prices are B80 and B40 respectively. “The new fee will be B500 for [foreign] adults and B300 for [foreign] children. For Thais the new fees will be B100 for adults and B50 for children,” park chief Nut Kongkasorn said. The new prices for foreigners represent a 25 per cent rise for adults and 50 per cent for children, and for Thais 25 per cent. The prices will be the same for the Surin Islands. For Phang Nga Bay the fee for foreign children remains unchanged at B100 but the fee for adults will rise from B200 to B300. For Thais the prices will rise from B20 to B30 for children and from B40 to B60 for adults. Mr Nut noted that the fees had

In 2006, the DNP attempted to double all the fees but this caused such an outcry that it backed off and left the fees as they were. The new prices were originally set by the then-DNP boss, Damrong Pidech, as he approached retirement in 2012. That hike, too, was cancelled, by his successor, Rerngchai Prayoonwet. “This new fee was announced by the DNP,” he said. “There is no [official] benefit for us. “The fee will normally be paid

[by the tour operator] when the passengers arrive at the island. There are no discounts or cheaper prices,” Mr Nut stressed. A tour operator who asked not to be named said he was not happy with the new fee. “For the trip to the Similans our prices start at about B2,500,” he explained. The price includes fuel, staff costs, food, transfer costs, commissions for tour agents and the park fee. “When the [park fee] increases, how can we make profit?” he asked. Despite the “no discounts” assurance from Mr Nut, the operator said, “We might get a cheaper price if we bring a lot

of passengers. It depends on how close our relationship is with staff there,” he explained. “At least they have given us plenty of advance notice [about five months] so that we can make decisions on fares,” he added. In the past, fee increases just before the high season caused an uproar in the tour industry because many operators had already contracted with their suppliers overseas at specific prices, meaning that they had to swallow the extra cost themselves. “At this stage, I cannot confirm whether or not the price of a trip to the Similans will have to increase,” the operator concluded.

In a lifelong race

The life and crimes of Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th

P Police housing in Patong, incomplete and with no workers on site, photographed a year after it should have been completed.

THE BAD BUILDERS “R ECE N T LY, I WAS given the responsibility of overseeing construction of police buildings in Region 8 after the awarding of a national contract. “In total 396 police stations costing B5.8 billion and 163 police accommodation blocks costing B3 billion were to be built across the country.” A huge construction company was the sole contractor. In Region 8 there were 26 police station and eight accommodation blocks to be built. Gen Paween was suspicious. “I went to the Royal Thai Police to talk about the company. I asked, “How can only one company build it all?” Especially since the contract stipulated that sub-contractors could not be used. “I had a very good time investigating corruption in the buildings that were my responsibility. For example, a building that was supposed to cost B27 million

actually cost B20 million. So “commission” of about B7 million was paid. Then, the company would receive the contract for that building. That meant the quality would not be good enough. “I was offered bribes but there was no way I could accept them after the years I had spent improving police buildings and accommodation. No way. A lot of people complained about me. “I collected documents that showed sub-contractors had been hired [contravening the original contract]. I presented my findings to the Royal Thai Police committee in charge of the national contract, and was questioned about my investigation. But I had done my job thoroughly. “Finally, the part of the contract that covered Region 8 was cancelled. “Now all the details are with the National AntiCorruption Commission. I believe some people will go to jail for this.”

ol Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin has hit the headlines frequently in the past couple of months as the head of the drive to root out “mafia taxi” activities in Phuket. But Gen Paween’s history in Phuket goes much deeper. He was superintendent of Kathu Police Station in 2000 during which he was famously involved in reducing rampant corruption and clearing sidewalks of vendors and in pursuing a former mayor accused of hiring hitmen to kill an associate. The ex-mayor, Anan Ananthanawat, was eventually cleared by the court. Transferred to Phuket Town Police Station, he headed an investigation that resulted in the arrest of a gang of 13 car thieves and retrieved 33 cars. In 2004 he headed an investigation that led to the arrest of another local politician, Omsin Aphichattakul, mayor of Rassada, on corruption charges. And in the past few weeks, in his new role as head of anti-mafia activities, he has arrested another two politicians – Thawee Thongchaem, Mayor of Karon, and Pian Keesin, former Mayor of Patong. Gen Paween says he had a happy childhood as the child of market gardeners in Samut Sakhon. “I lived a typical local lifestyle. I loved to climb and play around. I was a healthy boy.” He was also bright; at the age of six the teachers promoted him from Grade 2 to Grade 4. At the urging of his par-

Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin: ‘A policemen’s life consists of making great efforts.’ ents, he got a place in the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School. “At that time,” he says, “being a policeman was not my dream career.” But life took him in that direction and he found himself in Ranong in 1982 as deputy head of investigations. It was a steep learning curve. Far from home he had to learn how to be a policeman, how to be an investigator, and to understand the local culture. Luckily, he says, “I was surrounded by good policemen who were all like trainers in police work.” After four years in Ranong, he was transferred to Haad Yai to the traffic police. “I was baffled why I had to be in the traffic police [with may background] in investigations]. But, I agreed to do it.” Once again there was a learning curve. In January 1991 he was back in investigations, this time in Satun – and was involved in his first inquiry in which a policeman was the suspect. (See The Hit Man.) Five years later he was in charge of investigation and interrogation at Singha Nakorn District in Songkla. Here he began to be no-

ticed by the public, who began talking about “Deputy Paween” – though no one was quite sure what he looked like. “In Singhanakorn district, there were a lot of narcotics and gun cases. I arrested many people, and it was noticed; people called me ‘Deputy Paween’. “One time in Songkhla, we were on patrol and stopped near Songkla Lake. A group of teenagers saw the police car and ran away into the lake. “One of them was caught by my team. He would not get up. We asked him why not. He said, “My pants are full of s**t.” He was so afraid of me that I scared the c**p out of him. It was also in Singhanakorn that he solved a horrific case – the murder of a family of five by home invaders. (See A Family Murder.) The murder and the investigation made national headlines, and Gen Paween – by this time a lieutenant colonel – found himself in the limelight, and his skills were noticed by senior police officers. “Maj Gen Wannarat Kodcharat, rated one of Thailand’s top ten investigators asked me to join the Region 8 team in 1998. At first I turned him

down, several times, because I was worried that he would send me to work in Nakhon Sri Thammarat, with its reputation for dangerous criminals. “I h a d al re a dy b e e n mobbed three times in the past. That was a period when local people opposed officers trying to arrest drug suspects. “I ordered my officers not to use violence. As a result, and because they thought I looked skinny and weak, people didn’t respect me. They did not realise how tough I am.” But finally, in 1998, he gave in to Gen Wannarat’s urging. Instead of being sent to Nakhon Sri Thammarat, he found himself deputy chief of investigation in Phuket Town and then, two years later, at the age of 42, he was promoted to colonel and sent to be superintendent of Kathu Police Station. “I was at Kathu just seven months. I noticed that my officers had a hard time, having to drive across Patong Hill at the beginning and end of every shift, to their accommodation in Thung Tong. I managed to find budget to build accommodation for them in Patong. I also improved Kathu Police Station. “I had a hard time with thephuketnews

Pian Keesin [the mayor at that time],” he says. At night, I did not sleep much because I wanted tourists to be safe. “I cracked down on the dirty shows, illegal cigarettes and the wild animal trade. “I was also curious why tourists insisted on walking along the road in Soi Bangla – at that time the road was open to traffic, but they walked in the road, not on the sidewalk. They were at severe risk of being killed. “I discovered that the sidewalks had all been rented out to vendors. I arrested them. They told me that a small area

cost B6,000 a month to rent. A big area cost B20,000. After they were fined and released they would go straight back to their rented pitch on the sidewalk.” He was disappointed not to stay in Patong longer and do more to solve the problems there. “But I had to move because someone else wanted to be superintendent in Kathu. I had no choice. I had to obey orders.” He spent four years as Superintendent at Phuket Town Police during which he arrested Mayor Omsin (the

PHUKET NEWS FOCUS case is still going through the courts). In 2005 he was promoted to deputy commander of Surat Thani Provincial Police, a job that required a wider view of criminality. “It was a province with very powerful criminals,” he says. He decided to look at the underlying problems – why people became criminals. “I looked at the basic views, using the Broken Windows Theory.” (The theory was first espoused in a 1982 article by American social scientists James Wilson and George Kelling. Although still con-

troversial, it proposes that there is a relationship between criminality and environment, particularly slums and vandalism.) “I started from illegal possession of guns and vehicles with no licence plates or fake plates. We treated every case as serious and did not grant bail. No exceptions. “At first, the culprits were not afraid to be arrested because they were the underlings of politicians. But I fined them the maximum allowed by the law, which hurt their pockets. This was not police intimidation; the evidence

was very clear. “The media started to write about me. “I sent out many more patrols with the result that crime in Surat Thani province fell to levels not seen in five years.” In 2012 Gen Paween, by now a major general, was appointed Commander of General Staff Division, Region 8, a job that entailed overseeing the paperwork for all nine sections of the police in Region 8. It did not officially involve investigating or suppressing. He was also put in charge of inspecting progress on the

9

building of new police stations and accommodation in Region 8. The investigator in Gen Paween quickly smelled a rat, and he began his own investigation into corruption in the construction contract (See The Bad Builders). “People still thought I was a paper pusher. They had no idea that I was still a real policeman. “A policemen’s life consists of making great efforts. It’s like a constant race.” As evidenced by the past few months, Gen Paween’s racing days are far from over.

THE HIT MAN Jong, left, and Sak after their arrest for the murders of the Boon Thawee family.

A FAMILY MURDER T H E M U R DE R S OF T H E F I V E members of the Boon Thawee family in Singhanakorn, Songkla, made national headlines in 1997. The family were middle class, with both father and mother working for local health departments. Four of the family – the father and three children – were found hanged by the neck along the banister rail of the staircase in their home. The mother was found upstairs with a broken neck. Gen Paween headed the investigation, which resulted in the arrests of two men, Reungsak “Sak” Thungkul and Songkran “Jong” Kaewubon. “They were under the impression that this family were rich,” Gen Paween recalls. “They got into the house and found two of the children there. They tied them up and hid them on the second floor. The third child came home and was also tied up. “Next, the father arrived. He was tied up and blindfolded. Finally, the mother came back to the house. Terrified, she ran up to the second floor. Sak, a stocky man and the leader of the duo, tried to rape her but she fought back. He broke her neck. “Jong tried to persuade Sak to release the family but Sak had other ideas. He decided to electrocute them. The pair cut power cables and tried to kill the family with them, but the safety cut-out worked, and killed the power.” So the pair decided to hang them, using bit of clothing and sheets tied together. “Sak asked, ‘Who wants to die first?’ The father said, ‘Take me.’ The pair tied @thephuketnews

him to the banister rail and then pushed him over. The makeshift rope broke. The father tried to run away but Sak, small but stocky, caught him and subdued him. The pair took their time and hanged all four. “We discovered that the killers had used a special knot. If the victim struggled, the knot got tighter. This showed the attackers had experience of tying people up.” Having killed the family and ransacked their home, Sak and Jong left. Sak went to Yala to seek out an uncle about selling some of the Buddha images. But the uncle was in Pattaya. So Sak got together with a bunch of old friends. As they drank together, he waved a newspaper with a report about the murders and told his pals, “This was me. But they’ll never catch me.” One of the group, however, had an uncle in the police force. He noticed one of the items Sak was showing round was a badge with a caduceus (the health department symbol) and he believed his bragging. He contacted his uncle and word was passed to Gen Paween. He was sent with his team by helicopter to Yala to arrest Sak. “There was a huge storm at the time, and I thought I might die,” he recalls. But Sak was no longer in Yala. He was eventually tracked down to Kanchanaburi and arrested. He identified Jong and gave information that led to his arrest, too. Sak was sentenced to death and Jong was sentenced to life in prison. Sak took his case up the ladder and the Supreme Court eventually commuted his sentence to life.

“I WAS NOTIFIED THAT a businessman, Boonleu “Ko Seu” Phunphanit had been shot in the fresh market in Satun. Witnesses could not identify his killer, who was wearing a helmet and a scarf covering his face. “There was not much evidence at the scene. But, some witnesses saw that the murderer had trouble starting his motorbike afterwards, and had actually fallen over before righting the bike and escaping. One witness also noticed that the killer had used a pistol with a long barrel, possibly six inches. I had never come across a gun like that, so that was significant. “I went to the scene. On the ground I spotted

something that looked like a button. I could not figure out what it was, but I kept it. “I asked my team if they had ever seen a gun with a long barrel. One of them handed me his Smith and Wesson revolver, which had a four-inch barrel. As he passed it over, butt first, I noticed the decoration on the grip, and I realised what the ‘button’ I had found was. “We received information that a policeman had carried out the killing, and a name. I had him in for questioning and he denied it. I asked to see his gun. There was a hole in the grip where there should have been a metal Smith & Wesson logo. “When I showed him what I had found at the

scene of the murder, he realised I had conclusive evidence that he was involved, and he admitted to his part in the murder.” The policeman, it turned out, was having an affair with Mr Boonleu’s wife, and hired another man to carry out the killing, lending his gun to him for the job. The policeman was sentenced to death and the wife got a life sentence. “I was proud of the result although it saddened me that a police officer was involved. “Many officers complained to me, asking me, “Don’t you like policeman?” I said, “Yes, I like police officers, but I am not going to help any who break the law.”

T

he double murder of Britons David Miller and Hannah Witheridge on Koh Tao has made shocking headlines around the globe. Homicides can occur anywhere, but that these two individuals in the prime of their lives perished on one of Thailand’s “paradise islands”, makes the horrific crime all the more shocking. There are now concerns over the Royal Thai Police investigation, concerns spawned by poorly investigated slayings of foreigners in the past, and especially of two British tourists who never got to leave Thailand. The case of Welsh backpacker Kirsty Jones, 23, who was raped and murdered in Chiang Mai 14 years ago, has never been solved. And when a senior police officer on the case was quoted as saying that

Jones probably consented to sex with her killer, an international outcry ensued, and the reputation of the Royal Thai Police was accordingly tarnished. When, six years later, another 23-year-old native of Wales, Katherine Horton, was savagely beaten, raped and killed on Koh Tao’s neighbour, Koh Samui, the case was cracked only when a police team was flown in from Bangkok. Subsequently two local fishermen were arrested, and then convicted of the murder. However both Fair Trials Abroad and Amnesty International criticised what they saw as a hasty judicial process. The trial’s duration was one day, and concluded with death sentences being passed on both defendants. The heat is now on for Thailand’s Region 8 Police

Force – which covers the Upper South including Phuket and Koh Tao – to make progress with the case, with National Council for Peace and Order chief and Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-Ocha calling for a quick resolution because the murders are tarnishing the country’s image. Amplifying this case is the fact that Britain is the secondbiggest European market for Thai tourism, behind Russia. And Russian tourism arrivals are projected to decline sharply. A reduction in British tourist arrivals would therefore be catastrophic for Thailand’s faltering tourism industry. But of course there is another reason more important for swift closure and justice concerning the murders: it is owed to the victims, their loved ones, friends, and society.

The Russian bear bites back [Re. Kremlin hits back at out-in visa ban] Good, they abuse the system and they got caught. If you have the correct visa then nothing changes and you just do a 90-day visa run. Thailand can choose who to have in their country and how long they can stay. The Russians have screwed up the tourist industry in Phuket and the Thai are kicking them out. Fair play. Stop ALL visas to Russians to all holiday destinations round the world for 10 years until they learn to respect other peoples, their countries and customs. Kick them out and the tourists will come back in their 10,000s, keep Russians and the rest of the world will stay away. The Kremlin has no rights in Thailand to tell the Thai how to run their country, who to let in and for how long. Every nation can make and change its own rules and laws as it see’s fit so suit the changing climate and intrests as the world changes. Good on the Thai for sticking up against Russia. The rest of the world should do the same. simon01

Simon01, whatever your prejudices are, it appears here we have Thailand reneging on a TREATY with Russia, which, on an international stage, shows Thailand cannot be trusted. This article has NOTHING to do with the “quality” of Russian tourists, if that is your issue, take it up with TAT. Rorii

Kicking up the sand [Re. Former Kata-karon beach operators clean beach] I think the Kata-Karon beach bums deserve credit for writing all these bogus letters with the hopes that somebody might actually believe that tourists really want to be fleeced for laying on the beach. You guys make it sound like the beach is a forboding and dangerous place without the beach vendors on duty. Get over it. Why don’t you try and reinvent yourselves by looking at all the new opportunities that the recent changes have presented. And please, there are hundreds of restaurants and stores along the beach roads with cold drinks, fresh

food and beach supplies. You make it sound like the beach is now a living hell! And the trash on the beach...?, many of you beach chair bums stuffed more cigarettes in the sand that a Russian tour bus, and we don’t care if you swept up pine needles and leaves.... the beaches were still a filthy mess. Please, just stop your whining and go get a real job. Ed Sanders Ed Sanders, I don’t think you have visited those beaches lately... And no one is smoking in my family and most of our friends too. And I would like too know little more about those new opportunities that you talking about?? I really would like know? And it’s actually pretty far walk to get that bottle of water. The shops and restaurants are pretty much only on one side of Kata and only on the both ends of Karon. It is a long beach and long walk and I have two small children. I think Kata is 1.5km and Karon is over 3km. And I do have have real job, in fact I was working Today from 8am until 11pm it was another very busy day. I work

a lot. And when I have time to spend with my family I want to be on the clean beach and have some comfort. And yes, last thing I need is picking up rubbish and cigarettes on my day off. Whatever you say, beaches where much much cleaner. durian

Looking forward [Re. Amcham discussion airs worries about declining Phuket] I believe you need to find individualizes who see Phuket as their long term home not just an opportunity to make money. Preferably married to Thai national and have some involvement with the community one way or another. Their involvement has to come from the heart. This should be open to all not just the fat cats who only have their business or their employers interest at heart. Back to the basics is what is required. Anti-coup stance of US begins to soften

T

he attitude toward post-coup Thailand by the United States appears to be softening following the appointment of the new cabinet. The US criticised the May 22 coup, scaling back ties and adopting a wait-and-see approach toward the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). After Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha delivered his policy statement to the National Legislative Assembly on Friday (September 12), the American and Japanese ambassadors met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Gen Thanasak Patimaprakorn. US ambassador Kristie Kenney has previously met Gen Thanasak in his capacity as deputy leader of the NCPO. She also met Air Chief Marshall Prajin Jantong, chief of the NCPO’s economic arm. The meeting on Friday was also attended by Deputy Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai as well as Gen Thanasak’s team, including Gen Surapong

Ministry denies ‘Thaksin’ cut from history textbooks

US Ambassador Kristie Kenney has stepped up her meetings with junta officials, including Foreign Minister Gen Thanasak Patimaprakorn and other senior NCPO members. Suwannarat and former ambassadors Veerasak Futrakul and Chaiyong Satjipanon. During their meeting, Gen Thanasak described the US as a true and sincere friend and said Thailand would work closely with Washington to curb drugs and human trafficking, diplomatic sources said.

He also explained Thailand’s new migrant labour policy, which he said had resulted in the registration of one million illegal migrant workers. Gen Thanasak told Ms Kenny that Thailand was cooperating with neighbouring countries in implementing this policy, adding that Cambodian

Prime Minister Hun Sen was committed to working with Thailand on the issue. The foreign minister also sought US expertise on various reform-related matters of urgency, including democratisation, legal reform and sound, fair and inclusive governance. Bangkok Post

THE EDUCATION MINIStr y has insisted it never ordered officials to erase the name of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra from history textbooks. “There was no such move and Obec has no policy to remove Thaksin’s name from history textbooks. Any history textbook taught in whatever class is the same,” said Kamol Rodklai, secretary-general of the Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec), responding to a media report that claimed the junta recently ordered the ministry to expunge Thaksin’s name from a high-school history text. However, Obec would look further into the book’s content, author and publisher. Schools have the right to choose their own textbooks, which may be written by various authors and published

under the ministry’s content guidelines. The New York Times earlier quoted Thanom Anarmwat, the textbook’s author, as saying Thaksin’s name was scrubbed from the book by the Education Ministry following a military order. Winai Rodjai, head of the Obec panel on history curriculum development, said the deletion of Thaksin’s name was probably a misunderstanding. It focuses on a narration of history, so it might or might not refer to people’s names in some parts, he said. “I have asked the editor whether they avoided his name intentionally or if it was just the author’s writing technique. He told me it has been in print since 2010 and so needs to check the details first.” Bangkok Post

Indonesia set to ratify ASEAN accord on haze I

ndonesia’s parliament on Tuesday (September 16) voted to ratify a regional agreement on cross-border haze as fires ripped through forests in west of the country, choking neighbouring Singapore with hazardous smog. Officials in Singapore and Malaysia have responded furiously to Indonesian forest fires, which have intensified and become more frequent in recent years. Singapore’s air pollution rose to unhealthy levels on Monday as Indonesian authorities failed to control fires in Sumatra island’s vast tracts of tropical forest. Parliament’s decision has been passed into law. The agreement obliges Indonesia to strengthen its policies on forest fires and haze, actively participate in regional decisionmaking on the issue and dedicate more resources to the problem. Indonesia signed the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution 12 years ago and has been under increasing pressure to ratify the document, and began deliberations in earnest

Malaysian’s capital Kuala Lumpur, smothered in a layer of haze caused mainly by smoke drifting from fires blazing on Sumatra and other Indonesian islands. Photo: Krisjohn in January. “Indonesia has already carried out operations for the prevention, mitigation of forest fires and haze, and recovery activities, at the national level,” parliament said in a statement. “But, to handle cross-border pollution, Indonesia and other ASEAN nations recognise that prevention and mitigation need to be done together,” it said. While Singapore and Malay-

sia are smothered in haze from Indonesian forests every year, fires in June last year caused the region’s worst pollution crisis in a decade, renewing calls for action in Indonesia. Authorities have said most of the fires are deliberately lit to clear land for commercial plantations, such as paper and palm oil, and have arrested people caught in the act. The June 2013 haze crisis

sparked a furious diplomatic row, with Indonesia alleging Malaysian and Singaporean companies with plantations on Sumatra and Indonesian Borneo were among those starting the fires. Singapore last month passed a bill that gives the government powers to fine companies that cause or contribute to haze up to Sg$2 million (B51 million), regardless of whether they have an office in Singapore. Hundreds escape from rehab centre in Vietnam

Asia’s tigers remain under threat. Photo: Keven Law

Experts convene to save tigers SOME 140 TIGER EXPERTS and government officials from 20 countries met in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka Sunday (September 14) to review progress towards an ambitious goal of doubling their number in the wild by 2022. The nations, including the 13 where tigers are still found in the wild, had vowed at a landmark meeting in 2010 in the Russian city of St Petersburg to double the population of critically endangered wild tigers. The 13 tiger-range countries are: Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam. Experts say the number declined to as few as 3,200 in 2010 from 100,000 only a century ago. But since then, poaching has reached critical levels and has emerged as the greatest threat to wild tigers.

Statistics from TRAFFIC, the wildlife-trade monitoring network, show that a minimum of 1,590 tigers were seized between January 2000 and April 2014. Officials, however, listed some progress in the four years since the St Petersburg summit, including a rise in the wild tiger population in major “tiger range” nations such as India, Nepal and Russia. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina opened the conference. But her own government has been under fire from experts at home and abroad for setting up a giant coal-fired power plant on the edge of the Sundarbans mangrove forests, home to one of the largest tiger populations. The 13 range nations are expected to agree by 2016 to provide an accurate census of their tiger populations. AFP

MORE THAN 400 VIETNAMese drug addicts have escaped from a rehabilitation centre where they were detained to receive compulsory treatment, a local official said Monday (September 15). The detainees, many wielding sticks, broke free from the centre near Haiphong, Vietnam’s third-largest city, in the country’s northeast, late Sunday. “More than 400 inmates fled after breaking the door and threatened the guards of the centre with sticks,” Nguyen Huy Hoang, an official from Thuy Nguyen district – where the centre is located – told reporters. Police found some of the addicts back at their homes, while around 30 others voluntarily returned to the treatment centre. “The police are searching for those who are still at large,” Hoang added. The communist government enforces compulsory treatment for many of the country’s estimated 140,000 drug addicts, most of whom are addicted to heroin and inject the drug.

Heroin is widely used in Vietnam. Graphic: BMG Addicts identified by the authorities must undergo twoyear spells of “rehabilitation”. The treatment period at the Gia Minh centre, where the breakout took place, was recently extended to three years, Hoang said. The centre has also reduced the amount of money spent on food, prompting complaints from the addicts, he added. US-based Human Rights Watch has denounced the conditions in Vietnam’s rehab centres and a UN expert has recommended they be closed. AFP thephuketnews

Australian PM keeps vow to Aborigines AUSTRALIAN PREMIER Tony Abbott shifted his office to a tent in an isolated Aboriginal community Monday (September 15), keeping a promise made when he came to power despite having just committed troops to the fight against ISIS. Abbott vowed to spend a week each year in a remote indigenous location when he was sworn in 12 months ago, seeking to be the “prime minister for Aboriginal affairs”. He made good on his commitment by moving the hub of government to a tent compound on the outskirts of Nhulunbuy on the northern tip of Australia. Despite the remote location, he said he would stay in close contact with Canberra and had access to secure communications to do so.

“Obviously, if there are dramatic new developments I can move if needs be,” he said during a round of morning media interviews, a day after committing 600 troops to a multinational strike force against Islamic extremist militants. Aborigines, who number about 500,000 of a total population of 23 million, are the most disadvantaged Australians, suffering disproportionate levels of disease, imprisonment and social problems as well as lower educational attainment, employment and life expectancy. Lawmakers formally recognised indigenous peoples as Australia’s first inhabitants last year, five years after an official apology was made to Aborigines for past wrongs. AFP

leftist coalition led by Sweden’s opposition Social Democrats defeated the incumbent centreright government in Sunday’s (September 14) general election. The election set the stage for a bid by the Social Democrats’ leader Stefan Löfvan to form a coalition government with the Greens and the former communist Left Party. “I am ready to start exploring possibilities to form a new government for Sweden,” the 57-year-old former trade unionist told jubilant supporters in Stockholm when his win was confirmed. With 99.9 per cent of all districts counted, the red-green coalition had garnered a total of 43.7 per cent of the vote. This compared with 39.3 per cent for the four-party conservative-liberal Alliance led by incumbent Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt. Reinfeldt, prime minister for the past eight years, conceded defeat late Sunday with the vote counting almost complete.

Young voters in Stockholm celebrate the Leftists’ triumph in the hard-fought general election. The new administration intends to reduce Sweden’s growing wealth gap. Photo: AFP “We didn’t make it,” the 49-year-old leader of the Moderates party told supporters in Stockholm, adding he would hand in his resignation Monday. His challenger Löfvan ran on a pledge to narrow a growing income gap, which has worried many in traditionally egalitarian Sweden, while also vowing to improve the

schools and invest more on infrastructure. “The Swedish people have turned their backs on tax cuts and privatisations as the solutions to all social problems,” Löfvan told his supporters after his victory was confirmed. While he was ahead in the polls throughout the campaign, he had warned against

complacency, and on the eve of the election admitted that the rightist anti-immigrant Sweden Democrats could end up in a pivotal position in the new parliament. And indeed the Sweden Democrats more than doubled their votes, to 12.9 per cent, becoming the Nordic country’s third-largest party. AFP

Phuket scores big time in property awards

LABOUR LAW SECRETS PART V

Committee IN OUR MOST RECENT article (The Phuket News, issue of September 12) we described the “Work Rules” an employer is required to provide and pointed out that this requirement is triggered when the employer’s total number of employees reaches 10 or more. But that is not the only legal obligation triggered by the size of an employer’s work force. Once an employer or company employs 50 or more people, an “Employees Committee” must be established. Employees Committee members are entitled to hold their position for a term of three years. The minimum required number of members of the Employees Committee depends on the total number of the employees (see table). Employers must arrange for a meeting with the Employees Committee at least once every three months, or when more than half of the Employees Committee members request a meeting, or whenever otherwise “appropriately requested,” in order to: Provide welfare for an

huket property companies came home last Friday (September 12) with a couple of fistfuls of awards from the 2014 Thailand Property Awards, announced at a gala dinner the previous night at the Conrad Hotel in Bangkok. Phuket companies claimed the majority of awards outside Bangkok, scooping up four wins and six highly commended accolades. “There were many exceptional entries for the 22 awards this year and the judges had a tough time whittling down thousands of nominations, hundreds of entries and visiting more than 40 short-listed developments around the country to finally reach their decisions,” said Terry Blackburn, CEO of organisers Ensign Media. O utside of Bang kok, Phuket developers and developments claimed the lion’s share of acclaim with four award wins and six Highly Commended, most notable being Point Yamu Villas by Como Hotels & Resorts who won “Best Villa Development (Phuket)” and “Best Hotel Architectural Design”, and were Highly Commended for “Best Residential Interior Design”. INTERNATIONAL TOURIST arrivals to Thailand posted a decline of 10.66 per cent in the first eight months of the year, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. In figures released late last week, the ministry reported 15,703,373 visits to the country from January to August, down almost two million visits from the 17,576,342 recorded over the same period last year. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports admitted that it will be difficult to meet the original target of 28 million this year. Permanent secretary, Suwat Sidthilaw, predicted the year would close with 25.5 million visits and B1.8 trillion in tourism-related revenue. The original targets were 28 million and B2 trillion respectively. TTR Weekly thephuketnews

The Monte Carlo Yachts MCY76, one of four currently in the range. More models are coming.

W Simpson named agent for Monte Carlo Yachts MONTE CARLO YACHTS (MCY) has appointed Simpson Marine as its exclusive dealer in Southeast Asia, providing customers in the region with sales and service support for its range of Italian-designed motor yachts. Simpson Marine will provide a full range of sales and service support for the new range from its existing offices in Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. The MCY range is an important addition to Simpson Marine’s portfolio of luxury motor yachts, at a time when demand for luxury motor yachts is increasing in Asia. Built at a state-of-the-art facility in Monfalcone, Italy, the MCY collection was created by Italian design house Nuvolari Lenard and balances the latest technology with refined, contemporary elegance. Since their first appearance in the Asian market two years ago, the yachts of the MCY range have already made a strong impact across the region. The largest yacht in the range, the MCY86, enjoyed its official Asian launch in Hong Kong earlier this year and the model’s spacious interior, original design and unprecedented levels of customisation attracted much attention and positive feedback from those attending. The unique design and exceptional onboard luxury of these motor yachts are expected to make them popular with customers throughout Asia.

The customisable design can be adapted for long-range cruising, business entertainment or family outings. “For some time, Monte Carlo Yachts has been studying the Asian market and we are excited by the opportunities we see,” said Carla Demaria, President, Monte Carlo Yachts. “We believe the timing is now right to take this step and are delighted to be working with Simpson Marine as our strategic partner to develop the market across Southeast Asia.” Mike Simpson, Group Managing Director of Simpson Marine, said, “The Monte Carlo Yachts range is an important addition to our portfolio of luxury motor yachts. “This relatively new range of luxury motor yachts benefits from the unmatched industrial and financial strength of Beneteau Group, the innovative engineering and revolutionary manufacturing processes developed in the Monfalcone shipyard in Italy and the awardwinning design features of Italian luxury yacht designers Nuvolari Lenard. “This is a winning combination and I am confident that yacht buyers in Southeast Asia will be attracted by the stylish appearance and high quality of these Monte Carlo Yachts.” The MCY collection currently comprises four luxury yachts: the MCY65, the MCY70, the MCY76 and the flagship MCY86, with new models already underway.

hat began as a discussion, arranged by the Phuket chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce, about Phuket’s identity, and the way the island should be branded to ensure that tourist numbers continue to rise, took an abrupt turn on Friday (September 12). As David Keen of branding company Quo gave examples of how New Zealand had boosted tourist numbers with its “Pure” campaign, or how Yorkshire had done the same with its “Have a brilliant Yorkshire”, there were mutters all around the room, filled with around 200 people, about whether Phuket actually needs any more tourists or, indeed, can stand any more. On the stage, the father of Phuket tourism, Wichit Na Ranong, explained how, decades ago, he and others had formulated a plan for the government to guide Phuket’s tourism development. It was accepted and although Thai Airways started flying regularly to the island, there was no budget for most of the rest of the plan, so it didn’t happen. Alongside him, Daniel Meury of Andara commented, “Phuket is paying the price for its success.” Anthony Lark of Montara, agreed. “Phuket used to be beaches and Thainess. Market forces have driven development in an uncontrolled way. Perceptions of Phuket are mixed. There are many negative opinions.” In the audience, Wolfgang Meusburger who includes in his portfolio the Holiday Inn in Patong, said, “It’s a classic case of things going bad when there is no control and

to control mood lighting and order room service. Resort guests can walk onto the rocky headland – “the rocks” from which the resort takes its name, and where cocktail events and private parties can also be organised. During the high season, the resort will have its own jetty to allow access to visitors arriving on their private yachts. Richard Pope, CEO of Kata Rocks developer and operator Infinite Luxury said, “We created Kata Rocks with effortless

and luxurious relaxation as the main aim, and I’m delighted to have reached this important milestone.” Kata Rocks has already collected accolades in the International Property Awards, competing against projects from over 100 countries around the world. Ahead of its grand opening on November 28, the resort offers a soft-opening package until October 31, with a 20-percent discount on published rates, plus free airport transfers.

‘Father of tourism’ Wichit Na Ranong: ‘We should not wait until everything breaks.’ everyone does whatever they want to do.” Mr Keen, always nimble on his feet, swerved away from his numbers but argued that Phuket still needs to define itself. Without definition there would be no pride and no direction. He even offered to work on Phuket’s brand pro-bono. He challenged anyone in the audience to sum the island up in a word or phrase. There were no takers. So Mr Keen called for hands from those who would join an über-committee – a Tourism Council of Phuket, perhaps – to include the various chambers, associations, clubs and stakeholder organisations on the island that are already involved in steering things, often in conflicting directions. Perhaps 25 hands went up. Russell Russell spoke for many when he said, “There really is no one in this room who can drive forward the changes needed in infrastructure and branding. We can talk about it but we can’t drive it.” But Mr Wichit disagreed that it was time for the gov-

ernment, or some form of authority, to take a grip and make a plan. “No, not top-down,” he said. “No one is better than the people sitting here and the stakeholders to create the plan.” Presenting the plan to government, in a way that it would be accepted and supported, is an art, he explained. “You have to cook the food and then chew it for them. Then you can take it to a higher level [so they can digest it easily].” He added, “Any children who stay quiet get forgotten. So you have to demand.” But who would do this cooking, chewing and demanding? Michael Ayling, new boss of Royal Phuket Marina, agreed that it was “now the time to come together”. “Phuket is developing as a mass tourism destination,” he said, causing shudders around the room, “and we have to adapt to that.” He suggested that the major developers should take the lead. Mr Lark – who could never be accused of catering to mass tourism – said that, instead,

“Phuket needs breathing space to slow down, to fix the garbage, infrastructure and development.” Mr Wichit came back to his argument that people need to come together to define Phuket and devise a coherent way forward. The page could not be wiped clean, he said. “We have to paint a picture on a cloudy sheet. But better that than no painting at all.” He added, “We have to be ready for some pain.” There was surprisingly little dissent in the room. All appeared to agree that Phuket is in a mess, that everyone is pursuing his or her own interests without regard to their effect on others, that the authorities are reactive rather than proactive, and that the island is sorely in need of a plan. All the participants went away with plenty to think about. Whether the discussion will result in people actually coming together to give Phuket direction remains to be seen. But, warned Mr Wichit, “We should not wait until everything breaks.”

THE BIG LIST Robbery Experts Be careful where you stash your loved ones ashes and build your bridges. Someone might come along with a big enough ladder.

The entire bridge: If someone offered to sell you the Golden Gate Bridge, you’d probably have the good sense to know it was a scam. But if someone in Khabarovsk, Russia, were to offer you a 200-tonne steel bridge, they might actually deliver. In January 2008, employees on their way to a remote heating plant were forced to find an alternate route after the 15-metre-long steel bridge they crossed the day before vanished. While the workers slept, scrap metal thieves dismantled the span and supports and loaded it all onto trucks for a quick getaway. At the time, the plant’s owners estimated it would cost around US$40,000 to build a new bridge. This time, though, they will use concrete. Undies gone: During the 1992 LA riots, while some looters were busy stealing TVs and VCRs, others broke into Frederick’s of Hollywood and made off with around US$200,000 in women’s undergarments. The company also suffered the loss of a few one-of-a-kind items from the store’s lingerie museum – a bustier with gold tassels that Madonna wore in the music video for Open Your Heart, a pair of Ava Gardner’s bloomers, and a push-up bra worn by Katey Sagal as Married…With Children’s Peg Bundy. A few days later, a man known only as Jim B came forward to return Peg’s push-up and Ava’s undies. Madonna’s bustier was never recovered, despite a US$1,000 reward from the company. We like to think it made someone very happy though. Darn deers: Escaped psychiatric patient Leon Hollimon stole an ambulance in Lexington, North Carolina, and led police on a cat-and-mouse chase for hours, travelling through four different counties in two states. One of the cops likened the chase to an episode of Dukes of Hazzard. Eventually, the culprit ran off the road and was apprehended wearing a stethoscope, carrying latex gloves, and sporting a mohawk. It was an odd enough crime, but it got really weird when authorities found, splayed in the back, a dead deer with an IV stuck into its body. There was also evidence that Hollimon had tried using a defibrillator on the animal. Hollimon was taken to a nearby mental health facility for evaluation. Ashes to ashes: After Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, most of his ashes were spread over the grounds of a Buddhist temple in New York and in the Wishkash River in Washington state. His wife, Courtney Love, kept what was left inside a pink, bear-shaped handbag, hidden in a closet at her Hollywood home. In June 2008, Love said that a former friend had broken in and stolen the bag. The ashes’ whereabouts were unknown until a few months later, when German performance artist Natascha Stellmach claimed she acquired them, mixed them with marijuana, and planned to smoke the whole thing as part of an art installation entitled Set Me Free. Of course, no one is able to substantiate whether Cobain’s remains were in the joint or if it was just a publicity stunt. Full Nelson: Shawn Nelson was just a random dude whose life got a little tough, so he decided to steal a 57-tonne M60 Patton Tank from his local National Guard armoury. As it turns out, tanks don’t require keys to start. Yes, the hatches were locked, but police theorised he used a crowbar to break into three different tanks before finding one that would start. The ensuing 23-minute chase ended when Nelson managed to get the tank stuck on a barrier. He died soon after from a policeman’s bullet.

Long tongues and leaping cats in 60th World Records

F

rom super-long tongues to leaping cats, a host of weird and wacky landmarks have made the cut for 60th anniversary edition of the Guinness World Records book launched last week. The new edition reflects on six decades of record-breaking, while also featuring the latest additions to the oddball hall of fame. They include Californian Nick Stoeberl, possessor of the world’s longest tongue at 10.1 centimetres. British film buff Nick Bennett earned a place in the compendium for having the largest collection of James Bond memorabilia, with 12,463 items from model cars to posters displayed in a shrine in his house. “I’m still collecting... And there’s still stuff arriving today,” said Bennett, who started collecting in 1995. In Japan, Akiko Obata has the largest collection of plastic food, with more than 8,000 items including giant plastic burgers, donuts and dishes of everything from soup to

Meanwhile Alley of the United States takes the longest jump by a cat record, at an impressive 1.83 metres. The white, black and ginger cat leapt the distance between two small platforms. Brewers Guinness launched their famous records book in 1955 to settle disputes among drinkers. Since then, more than 132 million copies of their annual compendium have been sold in 20 languages in more than 100 countries. All the record attempts are assessed by adjudicators from the organisation.

New inclusions this year include Inke Siefker of San Francisco, who set a record for furthest arrow shot on target with the use of feet (6.10 metres) – done by operating a bow with her legs while standing on her hands. Meanwhile Karsten Maas in Germany has invented the world’s longest usable golf club at 4.39 metres. Maas conceded his invention was not the most practical as “the weight and length of the club make striking the ball really exhausting. Plus, I don’t have a caddy!” And Londoner Yannick Read who created the smallest

known caravan. “It’s even got a kettle so you can make yourself a nice cup of tea,” Read said in a promotional video. Other records included the most oceans rowed, awarded to Simon Chalk, and heaviest weight lifted with beard, taken by Antanas Kontrimas who picked up a woman attached by a harness to his grey beard. Aside from the new records, the 2015 book looks back at records from the last 60 years including British runner Roger Bannister’s sub-four-minute mile and Michael Jackson’s music industry landmarks. The annual remains one of the world’s best-sellers.

Zeus, tallest dog in the world, dies at age five. ZEUS, THE GREAT DANE who in 2012 earned the Guinness World Record as tallest dog in the world, has died at age five, a local US newspaper said last week. Zeus died last week of old age, owner Kevin Doorlag told the Kalamazoo Gazette, a local daily in the midwestern US state of Michigan. He would have celebrated his sixth birthday in November. The gentle giant, who measured 44 inches at the shoulder and more than seven feet tall when standing on his hind legs, weighed more than 150 pounds, the paper reported. In 2012, when Zeus entered the records book, Doorlag said his massive canine often

HE WAS IN DEEP SLUMBER when cops arrived. A burglar planning to rob a US home stole a little nap instead and ended up in handcuffs, officials said. The man – apparently overcome with exhaustion – laid down on a bed at the Florida home during a burglary, and fell into a deep sleep, the local sheriff’s department told reporters. A cleaning lady at the

house, outside the town of Sarasota, found the napping robber and called police. Authorities took photos of the thief, identified as Dion Davis, 29, moments before placing him under arrest. Police said that when they arrived, Davis was still in a deep slumber, lying next to a plastic bag crammed with the jewellry that he had planned to steal. AFP

Festival performers arrested over naked walk POLICE DETAINED THREE Swiss performers who were walking naked in downtown Zagreb as part of their show at an alternative art festival in the Croatian capital last Saturday (September 13). Two men and a woman were walking naked in slow motion in their performance entitled Naked Slow Walk through the centre of Zagreb, state-run HRT television re-

ported, broadcasting images of the naked performers. Officers escorted the trio to a nearby police station after convincing them to put their clothes back on. The festival “I Love You Zagreb” was dedicated to late Croatian artist and performer Tomislav Gotovac who had walked naked through the streets of Zagreb back in 1981. Its organiser said local

authorities had been informed in advance of the event. Meanwhile, police also detained a US-Korean artist who was sleeping at the Cvjetni Trg square, in central Zagreb, as part of her performance Zagreb Dreaming, HRT reported. She had planned to sleep there for eight hours there but was escorted to a police station less than an hour in to her performance. AFP

arkets are where you can sample real life, local life – it’s all laid bare for everyone to see. I’ve always been a big fan of markets and despite all the modern shopping malls and supermarkets that have sprung up around Phuket (Tesco Lotus, Big C, Central, Jungceylon and more) the local markets are as lively as ever. You’ll find fresh markets in all areas of Phuket, some daily, some only on selected days. One of the biggest is in Kathu in between Patong and Phuket Town, well worth a look. One of the island’s most popular regular flea markets is the Phuket weekend market (aka Phuket night market but officially named the Chao Fah Variety Market), which is located just outside Phuket City, opposite Naka Temple off Wirat Hongsyok Rd, near the three-way (traffic light) junction with Chao Fa West Rd. It’s open Saturday and Sunday starting late afternoon, and open up to around 10pm. Along the same road is also a fresh market (called the Talad Sot Mai – “New Fresh Market”). The weekend market is not really for buying fresh food, but there

are stalls selling fruit and there are loads of snack stalls for buying deserts, corn, drinks, spicy snacks, noodles and of course fried insects! I’ve been in Thailand since 1999. Never eaten a fried insect and have no plans to eat a fried insect. Ever. It’s one of those “you can get anything here” markets – you’ll find entire stalls selling nothing but remote controls or comic books or fluffy toys. There are also some random secondhand stalls where you’re never quite sure what you’ll find. Many stalls are selling clothes, new and secondhand.

We visit the weekend market every couple of months if we happen to be passing. There are CD and DVD stalls (all originals of course!), handicrafts and antiques too. It’s become quite popular with tourists now, but don’t expect to find something on the scale of Jatujak market in Bangkok. You don’t see many beggars in Phuket. So it’s quite noticeable at the weekend market. Each time we go I see several poor souls with disabilities and I suppose no family to support them. Having traveled in some very poor countries in my life, I admit to having a hard heart, but here it stands out more. On our last visit I did give one guy some money. The weekend night market starts up in the afternoon and carries on into the late evening. Many people go in the evening and at this time it does get quite busy. Hard to park a car sometimes. We go there every now and then. My wife can always find some clothes to buy! If you go in the evening, you could more or less eat your dinner at the market by buying and sampling different snacks like the yummy (and slightly spicy) fish cakes. In my column, I like to show a bit of local life and the weekend market is a good place to start if you want to see the real Phuket (although quite a lot of other tourists also go!). Remember, it’s on Saturday and Sunday only. Try some snacks and food from the many food-stalls, grab a cold beer from the bar that can be found somewhere in the middle of the market ... actually there are a few places selling drinks. It’s easy to get to from Phuket Town. If you come from Patong, it takes about 20 minutes (unless you get caught in traffic!). I reckon a tuk-tuk will charge about B400. Of course you can rent a moped for about B200-250 per day. It’s best to go in the late afternoon/early evening when the temperature cools down a bit. The market gets busier after dark and can be really quite crowded. Enjoy! thephuketnews

Tantric ‘sex goddess’ to empower Phuket gals WOMEN’S WORLD

Sarah Knockles sarah@santosaphuket.com

Jenelle worked as a local model and attended community college until she decided to move to Las Vegas, Nevada where the lure of sin-city led her into a stripping career.

HOT DATE: Santosa welcomes Jennelle Gordon, who will lead a workshop on September 27, to help women realise the power of their feminine sexual energy.

@thephuketnews

S

antosa is very pleased to announce that tantric healer, Jennelle Gordon, will be gracing the island with her empowering workshops – teaching women to discover selfempowerment through their sexual energy, and connecting them to a higher state of consciousness. Jennelle is passionate about helping other women to discover the beautiful relationship with themselves, allowing energetic openness. Every country, culture and religion have spent millennia inflicting shame, guilt, repression and punishment upon human sexuality – especially upon women’s sexuality. Some believe that this is due to the incredible power of this unique energy, and all that goes with it. Jennelle’s passion is to use this innate power to help women discover their true selves – not defined by being wives, mothers, sisters or daughters – allowing them the ultimate connection to a higher source of consciousness and providing a quiet space of respite away from the chaotic times that we live in. Her method contains practices which are accessible – she is no spiritual snob! She understands that not everybody has the time to meditate and practice yoga for six hours per day, so she has developed a way to reach out with easily adaptable and powerful methods. Jennelle’s story is incredibly inspirational. The daughter of a pastor, she led a very spiritual childhood in an Evangelic, Pentecostal, Christian missionary family. In later years, Jenelle worked as a local model and attended community college until she decided to move to Las Vegas, Nevada where the lure of sin-city led her into a stripping career. When the stock market crashed, Jennelle’s poor financial decisions caused

her financial ruin. The emotional trauma bought her back to spirituality, and she decided to return to yoga. Eventually a link was formed between these worlds, and sexuality, spirituality and yoga intertwined in a tantric yoga workshop, which was to change the course of her life. Devoting many of her later years to living within the tantric community, Jennelle developed a unique platform to teach and heal women by tapping into their divine feminine strength. One in four women are either sexually abused, or subject to sexual trauma at one point in their lives. A powerful part of Jennelle’s workshops is her ability to encourage transparency within a circle of trust. Her insight is that when we break down the parts of ourselves that we are most

ashamed of, in the end, regardless of the depth of the trauma, the essence of shame and guilt is still the same. Wed a rice farmer THAI EYE

H

ave you ever heard about the idea of cutting out the middle man and buying rice directly from the farmer? This is not a new concept. There are several strong farmer communities available and waiting for your order. So how and where can we find them? Last month, I came across an interesting Thai Facebook page – “Pookpintokao” or “rice delivery” in English. This page is like a Yellow Pages for available organic farmers in Thailand. This brings us back to the heading – well, let us take a look at a cute story below. Pookpintokao is a non-profit project started by a group of 13 people on Valentine’s Day, February 14, this year. The aim of this group is twofold: To help Thai farmers overcome their debt troubles from fertilizer and pesticide costs; and to increase access to organic rice for Thai people. This Facebook page serves as Cupid “the match maker” bringing “the bride – consumer” and “the groom – farmer” together and helps them develop a lasting relationship consisting of an agreement of 1-year rice delivery.

Why is it a bride and groom relationship?

Changing from a chemical-based farm to an organic farm is not an easy task for farmers. It requires bravery, encouragement, high spirit, and regular and intensive practices. Pookpintokao therefore tries to match the

consumer and the farmer as a couple with the belief that support from “urbanistas” such as you and I can help these farmers shift toward organic practices. We can be the farmers’ saving grace. Purchasing directly from farmers also reduces the price by eliminating the middleman. Imagine getting safe and inexpensive rice, milled fresh every month, and delivered to your door without any corporations involved. The most important point is this page encourages the bride to develop a relationship with farmers via a phone call, letter, site visit, and to stay over at the farm! By doing this, you have chance to learn and experience organic farming. You can see the practices of your rice product. You can see the farmers’ effort and hard work put in his/her (and your) rice. You can make them proud. At the moment, there are 600 grooms available on the Pookpintokao. The potential bride can check each groom’s profile, which provides all the information needed; such as area size, rice species available, pricing, milling process, rice production capacity, quality control, planting calendar, delivery channel, and more…

How it works?

Visit the page https://www.facebook.com/

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2014

Here’s the profile image of an “Experienced groom”, No.2, a farmer who is already organic certified, from Si Saket Province. There are now 600 grooms to choose from. pookpintokao and fill out the form. You will then be identified as “brave bride – a consumer who is ready to support inexperienced farmers that want to change into organic practices” or “conservative bride – a consumer that supports farmers who already are organic certified”. Then the Pookpintokao page will help you arrange a meeting or site visit for you to meet with your groom and make an agreement on rice species, pricing, and quantity. You pay directly to the groom – your farmer. Pookpintokao has nothing to do with money at all – it just serves as match maker. If the relationship you develop goes well, the Pookpintokao page will cover your story online to encourage new people to join the project. Perhaps one day, we can all say “I do” in this rice marriage.

70,000 rai reclaimed, Forestry Dept set to ‘launch full-scale op’

R

oyal Forest Department Director-General Thirapat Prayoonsit said that Thailand is now equipped with a master plan to solve the problems of forest encroachment and to achieve the sustainable management of forest resources. In addition to that, Mr Thirapat said Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Daopong Ratanasuwan have announced four key strategies to implement, including the protection of forests, the building of forest preservation awareness, the reform of the national forest resources maintenance and the rehabilitation of forests.

He added that what the Prime Minister and the National Resources Minister have set as a priority is the stoppage of encroachment into healthy forest areas. Mr Thirapat went on to say that the Royal Forest Department Director-General has so far taken back around 40,000 rai of forestland from encroachers, while the National Council for Peace and Order has helped reclaim another 30,000 rai since it took over the country’s administrative power on May 22. Moreover, the department has set up a special unit commissioned to crack down on encroachment and deforestation, particularly those involved influential figures. NNT thephuketnews

KIS kids take active role in road safety

L

ast week was Road Safety Week at KIS (Kajonkiet International School Phuket). During that week the children learned more about how to stay safe on the roads. The week started with a special visit from Deputy Superintendent Khun Ampol Chunthakul from the Vichit Police Station, who gave a presentation on the best practices on the road, and providing tips on how to help make the road a safer place. Remarked Mrs Carter, Phase Leader Key Stage 2: “ The objective of the exercise was to make children aware of the potential risks of traffic and how best to act to reduce these risks.” Moreover, Children learnt that even though they do not drive a car themselves, they can still be actively involved with safety. Patty, a Year 6 student, commented: “During the presentation we learnt about where to park and how to respond

If we know about safety in traffic then we can tell other people to stay safe. It was also a lot of fun as we made posters in our classroom called

‘Seat belts Saving Lives’.” Tips that were discussed were reminding parents or drivers to always wear a seatbelt and to use a hands-free set when using a telephone in the car. During the presentation examples were

sk five TEFL teachers on Phuket what they think PD means and you might get five different answers. Ask the same five teachers if they feel their office has enough resources and they’ll all say, “No”. PD stands for professional development and much like how supplies and resources are limited, opportunities for PD in Thailand are far and few between. Despite the lack of support from schools, serious teachers are able to source teaching materials, as well as professional development and know-how from the internet. Here are some of the better sources local teachers can use to their advantage. Professional Knowledge, mainly a site for promoting TEFL certif ication courses and the profession in general, eslbase.com has a resources page that covers topics such as teaching methodology, terminology, theory and more. It’s not going to help anyone who’s been teaching for a long time but it is great for those who are starting out. If you’re going to teach academic English, test preparation or high-level writing, you’d better know your grammar. Facebook’s Captain Grammar Pants considers herself a “grammar guardian” and regularly posts some of the @thephuketnews

most useful and interesting English grammar rules. If you’re after a more straightforward source of grammar guidelines, grammarbook.com is easy to navigate and very detailed. Teaching Resources, without a shadow of a doubt, the best site for resources and lesson plans, has to be busyteacher. org. Newsletters notify subscribers of new material and their existing material requires almost no alterations. A close second, but not free, is esllibrary.com. For roughly B1,700, teachers can find useful lesson plans that include teaching materials, worksheets and activities. Investing in the one-year subscription will

save teachers time and hassle trying to create lessons on their own. If you don’t already know about BBC’s Learning English site, you’re just not looking for resources. From videos to sentence diagrams, and from news articles to quizzes, BBC has most aspects of ELT covered. One resource site that just keeps getting better and better is the Discovery Channel’s puzzelmaker. com. Teachers can make crosswords, word searches, cryptograms and more. Once f inished, all the teacher needs to do is print out the materials. Brilliant! Professional Development: The most obvious choice here is tesol.org. A one-year membership costs

roughly B3,200 but benefits include special interest discussion groups, virtual seminars, online courses, access to unadvertised jobs and much more. If you cannot attend a seminar, you might as well read good professional articles. We follow eslarticle. com and their Twitter account notifies you of any new publications they’ve uploaded onto their site. While many of Khurusapha’s (Teachers’ Council of Thailand) regulations haven’t affected foreign teachers in Phuket, many suspect this will change soon. Use the site to download PDFs and to keep up with their announcements regarding teacher development. Creating a path to heart

P

eople often mistakenly think that art is for artists. The real truth is that art is for everyone, whether it’s a vehicle to challenge popular opinion, a pleasing view which brings calm to the heart or an outlet for expression. In a world of innumerable languages, there are yet occasions when words just can’t reach the true feeling or emotion as aptly as the colour red. Some moments can only be interpreted through a piece of music or dance. Given free rein, a hand can bypass the mind and go directly to the heart and soul, taking a path that isn’t laden with political correctness or grammar traps. World-wide, Art Journaling is growing in popularity as a method for nonartists, and artists alike, to free their minds, clear space through the clutter and create visual representations of well, of anything they jolly well like! Mixed media, personal items,

hand writing, whatever grabs your fancy, are all brought together to create a journal of art of you. Veg Fest: a time for cleansing HEALTH MATTERS Sarah Nockles sarah@santosaphuket.com

In order to banish the mystery illness, they kept to a strict vegan diet to honour two of the emperor Gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok Ong Sone Teh.

N

ot just a celebration of plant-based food, nor a sensational spectacle for tourists, the vegetarian (vegan) festival is steeped in history and tradition, and is a major event for the Chinese-Thai community, which makes up approximately 30 per cent of the population of Phuket. Although celebrated in other parts of Thailand, the tradition was originally started in Phuket in 1825. Now for a little history lesson! Phuket has been used as a port by merchants from Arabia, India and China for many years. It has been through periods of French, Dutch, British, Portuguese , Indian and Arab influence, and many say that this has contributed to its multiculturalism and spirit of true uniqueness. In

Santosa will offer some of its many favourite dishes for a Veg Buffet on September 27. Pictured is their delectable vegan burger.

Phuket’s Veg Fest is not only about food and physical health, it’s also about spiritual and mental wellbeing. the early 19th century the tin-mining boom brought many Chinese laborers to the island, and as they settled and integrated with Thai people, a whole new culture was born – the Baba people. Eventually, many of these people became rich merchants and built a unique city of colourful architecture with Portuguese and Chinese accents, still standing in Phuket’s Old Town quarter today. The vegetarian festival relates to the Baba people – and the most popular story regarding its origins is the journey of a travelling opera company visiting Kathu to perform for the Chinese miners. The governor, Praya Jerm, had changed the principle city to Get-Hoe in Kathu, where the majority of the tin mines and Chinese settlers resided. The jungle-covered land was a hotbed infectious diseases, and the whole opera company fell sick when they arrived. In order to banish the mystery illness, they kept to a strict vegan diet to honour two of the emperor Gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok Ong Sone Teh. And so began the festival of the ninth lunar month. It aims to bring good fortune to the community and its inhabitants. Each year the date for the festival varies slightly, but in 2014 it is from September 23 to October 13. During the 21 days, observers dress only in white, and abstain from meat, alcohol, dairy products, eggs, onions and garlic. This avoidance of “vice” promotes a strong mind and body, and of course leads to a feeling of lightness, brightness and remarkable purity. And herein lies the interesting part … the festival is not just about the food! After the poles at each of the Chinese temples are raised, to invite the gods to enter, the street processions start – and that is where things start to get interesting! (Also see schedule in News, page 8). Mutilation through piercings and cuts is a gruesome aspect of the tradition, which is said to bring good luck through suffering. Throughout the festival, the streets are lined with Ma Song – men who have allowed the gods to enter their bodies, partaking in a variety of painful acts such as sticking sharp objects through their face, or cutting themselves with axes! This creates quite a spectacle, and is certainly not for the faint-hearted, but it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should not be missed. The endless firecrackers and smoke aimed at the statues of the gods during the street processions all add to the vibrant and enigmatic traditions that have

shaped this festival into an event that hosts overseas visitors travelling to the island specifically to experience it. Even if the spiritual aspect or the grotesque spectacles in the streets are not your thing, many areas in Phuket celebrate with vegetarian markets paying homage to the cuisine, and offering up a plethora of plant-based delicacies – even competing for the best dish. Some expats also observe the traditions of the festival, and practice the same abstinence out of respect for the traditions and practices of the Baba people. The upshot of this is giving the liver and digestive system a much deserved break from the rigours of living in tropical paradise, and of course, the sometime indulgent lifestyle that accompanies it! Vegetarian restaurants the islandover celebrate with special events to pay homage to the fabulous festival of purity and vibrant health, and Santosa is no exception. The newest and most prolific of the fine dining vegetarian restaurants in Phuket, will be holding a very special vegetarian buffet in celebration of this wonderful festival. On Saturday September 27, the restaurant will be open from 6pm with a selection of Santosa signature dishes, and of course, traditional Thai cuisine in honour of the traditions of the festival. The cost will be a very special B350++ per person, and we welcome bookings on +66 76 330 600.

A CLEANSING PROCESS: Our digestive tracts could certainly could use a break from animal products and alcohol, every now and then.

his year’s entire season of The Apartment Celebrity Edition was filmed at Nikki Beach Hotel and Spa in Phuket. It is the first ever season of The Apartment to be filmed at a luxury hotel development and, as anticipated, included a star-studded celebrity cast. This luxurious setting for filming will showcase the arresting beauty of Bang Tao’s beach as another less-frequented upscale area of Phuket. Being the base for a leading regional reality show (being broadcast in 20 territories) will push Phuket into a top destination of choice. Singapore-based developer Castlewood Group, donated four of their fivestar villas to be used over the course of the season. This new development, set to open in 2015, not only showcases the hotel, but also Phuket as a glamorous and attractive destination, with investment being poured into the region from property developers such as Castlewood Group and Banyan Tree, among others. The Castlewood Group became the exclusive property partner of Asia’s smash-hit TV show, The Apartment, with their latest installment The Apartment Celebrity Edition, which will debut on StarWorld across more than 20 territories later this year. This season saw 12 celebrity contestants battling it out to win US$100,000 (B3.2 million) which will be donated to a charity of their choice. The four celebrity teams were each provided with a luxurious villa and had the job of transforming the award-winning villas, within their allocated budget and time-frame. Fine ‘boeuf’ never tasted so good Anton Makhrov news@novostiphuketa.com

The gentle flavour of escargots immediately conjured up images in my mind, a view of some typical European seaside town.

Executive Chef Philippe presents a plate of foie gras. The duck liver iis imported from France.

S

ad to say, cooking beef can hardly be listed among the top skills of Thai chefs. And so, a gourmand looking for a premium, juicy steak in Phuket has to depend on foreign chefs. For steak, the three big “A”s usually come to mind: Argentineans, Australians and Americans – but for something different, I recently opted on looking to the culinary mastery of the big “F” – the French. La Boucherie is an international chain of French steak houses with about 120 restaurants in France and a dozen in other countries, including two in Phuket, Thailand. This year, the chain is celebrating its 40th anniversary, so you can be sure that these guys know how to grill a mouthwatering cut of prime beef. During our “green season”, La Boucherie looks like an ideal place for a romantic night out. Gentle music and the murmur of water in the fountain create a private and blissful atmosphere, while the staff is nearly invisible, though always ready to help when you need them. Being a dedicated carnivore, I was planning to start my dinner with some raw beef such as carpaccho or steak tartar. But restaurant manager Yann and executive chef Philippe talked me

into going the French way. So I changed my mind and would not regret it. Various French cheeses, pâtés and salads (including Nicoise) are all there on the menu, but Chef Philippe suggested I start with his Burgundy snails, served in a pot-holed ceramic plate to keep them warm. The gentle flavour of escargots immediately conjured up wistful images in my mind, such as a view of some European seaside town. All of a sudden I realized that my days in Thailand made me missing mai phet (not-spicy) relishes. “These are just escargots, butter and parsley, that’s all,” Philippe commented with a smile. Next came a portion of foie gras with a baguette and a preserve made from shallots. The foie gras was light and fluffy the way all the best freshly-made pâtés are. “We import the duck liver from France. But then I make the foie gras myself,” Philippe infomed this delighted diner. All starters are served with a fresh salad leaves supplied by We café, which is one of the most renowned local suppliers for local five-star hotels and restaurants. But it’s definitely not the lettuce that brings gourmands to La Boucherie. The star attractions on the menu are beef specialty dishes and the selected vintages accompanying them. La Boucherie can offer a wide selection of beef treats including The Chateaubriand (sometimes referred to as The King of Steaks for it tenderness) and Boeuf Bourguignon (tender pieces of

beef cooked in red wine, Burgundy style). The latter originated as a simple peasant dish but then went upmarket and now enjoys haute cuisine status. Also on the menu is a Royal minced steak with fried egg and bacon, as well as an assortment of mixed beef that lets you try a bit of everything. My choice was Cote de boeuf, a beef rib weighting a whole kilogram. This generous cut takes some 20-30 minutes to cook to perfection, but it is undoubtedly worth the wait. Chef Philippe cooked it for me Frenchstyle, which means the steak was rather rare, and just perfect for me. But frankly speaking, for a non-French epicurean who doesn’t like their steak too juicy, I would recommend something closer to medium or even medium/well-done. All steaks in La Boucherie are served with a selection of side dishes (with all manner of potatoes being the main base) and sauces. The latter are worth a stand-alone mention. Words like “mayonnaise” and “Béarnaise” in La Boucherie are exactly what they are supposed to be. The sauces are rich, savoury and simply delicious. And for me, they may be the reason to visit La Boucherie time and again. La Boucherie in Chalong is located on ChaoFa East Road, just 1 km to the North from Chalong circle. Tel: 094 807 6831 and 087 629 4434. The restaurant in Patong can be found on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pee Road. Tel: 076 344 581. For driving directions and full menu, please visit laboucherie-asia.com.

From seafood to ‘V’ food Saran Mitrarat reporter4@classactmedia.co.th

Our food is real vegan ... The purpose and intention of why people decide to eat vegan food should be clear.

W

ith the veg fest getting underway this week (see page 8 and 22), many people are opting to give up meat and animal products at one of the many special shrines and eateries. In fact, such vegan delights are available year round at a number of eateries in Phuket, most of which are located near famous Chinese shrines. When talking about vegetarian or vegan food in Thailand, most people think about artificial meat dishes, produced from plant protein (soy for example), and seasoned with flavours and artificial colouring to make it resemble meat. These foods may suffice who struggle to part with their passion for meat, but in fact, they can hardly be considered authentic vegetarian or vegan. “Our food is real vegan,” said Chanipha ‘Aoy’ Aekthaweewattanadej, owner of Look Thor vegan and healthy foods eatery. “The purpose and intention of why people decide to eat vegan food should be clear. The foods they eat must be cleaned and have beneficial nutrients and vitamins.”

Chanipha opened the restaurant with her mom and grand-mom who are full-time vegans, and the cooks. The best-seller is the ‘Kua Kling” (top right) which includes, spices, herbs and mushrooms.

Ms Chanipha is also the owner of famous seafood restaurant “Talaythong Seafood” in Sapam area. Asked why she decided to open a vegan restaurant, she said, “Because of my mother, she has eaten vegan foods for over 18 years, which inspired me to focus on a new market. “My mother and grand-mom, both full-time vegans, are the chefs here, which is why I can guarantee quality and taste of foods,” The ingredients used at the restaurant include only organic vegetables, organic rice and we don’t add monosodium glutamate.” The best selling dish, a must-try she insists, is “Kua Kling”. Kua Kling is a Southern style dried curry stir-fry. Instead of minced meat, the vegan version uses mushrooms as the main proteinbase, which is marinated with special spices and other Thai herbs. The yellowish orange result complements other colours of other vegetable dishes. Its flavour is a little spicy (for locals) and there is a particular and distinct herbal aroma inviting your spoon. Phuket Town formally ties the knot with Georgetown CULTURAL INSIGHTS The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

(From top) Khaw Sim Bee, or Phaya Rassada, had mastered seven languages, and learned the art of governance in Penang. Both Phuket and Penang have a common Peranekan (Chinese Straits) ancestry, and similar, venerated Sino-European architecture. Photo: Baltic Media When Khaw Sim Bee died in 1916, a grand state funeral was held for the fallen leader in Penang. In the 20th Century, many privileged Phuketians were sent to boarding school in what is present-day Malaysia, and who, along with their relatives, travelled between the two islands on steam ships like the one pictured.

D

ignitaries, officials and other community represents from both Phuket city and Georgetown, Penang, proudly partook in a ceremony to formalize the pact between the two island locales yesterday (September 18) at Phuket Provincial Hall. The cermony follows the Royal Thai Consul-General to Penang Srirat Vathesatogkit meeting with Phuket governer Maitri Inthusut on August 19, to discuss formally making Phuket Town (Phuket City Municipality) a sister city – twin town – with Penang’s prime population centre. The event marked the seventh such agreement that Phuket has entered into, following previous pacts made with Las Vegas, Port Blair in India’s Nicobar and Andaman islands, the French city of Nice, mainland China’s Hainan province and Yantai city, and the Russian port of Nakhodka. The relationship between the two historically-connected islands spans centuries if not millennia, with both islands sharing various economical, heritage and cultural similiarities and roots – whether referring to their distinguish Sino-Protugese architecture, or their rubber and tin extraction industries. “The bond between the two islands is a great opportunity for Phuket officials to study many more governing issues from [counterparts in] Penang and Phuket will benefit as a formal sister city, especially in the island’s bid to get registered as a World Heritage site by UNESCO,” remarked Pranee Sakulpipatana, eminent educator and cofounder of the Thai Peranakan Association. Similar to Phuket, the island of Penang is one of the most developed and economically important states in Malaysia, and as official sister cities, their legacy will extend into the coming age of Asean.

Schooled in High Class

The respected professor, commonly known as “Ajarn Pranee”, went onto reflect on the relationship between the two islands throughout the 20th Century. “The Straits Steamship Matang made it easier to travel to Penang and to send the children from the middle class families and the expats to Penang for business and study.” This was a good way for keeping them closer to home, instead of sending them far away to London, for example. “For the Chinese descendents, they would send their beloved sons to study at Junling Highschool, girls would be sent to Boarding school at Penang Convent Light Street.” The fathers of these privileged children often bought a second home in Georgetown to stay in while visiting their children. Once the children had gratuated, the Penang house was usually sold. “They probably would have kept their houses if they had known how much the value would increase – in some cases, more than 100 times,” Ajarn Pranee laughs. During their time spent in Penang, Phuket students learnt how to cope better with Western cultural norms, as the “Penang Society” was much more Westernized, as a result of being part of the British Empire. These Thai students also adopted some aspects of a overseas (albeit, nearby) culture. “They chose the parts they liked and brought them back to Phuket. For example, we learned how to dress in Nyonya fashion like all the Nyonya ladies in Penang and also took to the elaboraye white wedding gown for the brides with the very long trailing bouquet,” she notes. Meanwhile, rich business men went to Penang quite often to trade the economical commodities of the era – tin ore and para rubber sheets – netting large profits, and

always returning to Phuket with suitcases packed with luxurious goods, items that were, at that time, unavailable in Thailand.

A Thai-Malaysian legacy

One of the most important Penang-influenced leaders of this island’s past is Phaya Rassada Nupradit Mahitsarapradi, also known in Phuket as Khaw Sim Bee Na Ranong. His statue stands atop Rang hill, overlooking Phuket Town, reminding the current generation of an invaluable legacy. Sim Bee was the former Governor of Monthon Phuket and studied in Penang the art of governing an island city. As the Superintendent of Monthon [a county in the olden days] Phuket, which consisted of seven Thai provinces, including Satun, Trang, Krabi, Phangha, Takuapa [a district in Phang Nga], Ranong and Phuket, Phraya Rasada was an oustanding negotiator who’d mastered seven languages. “He never had the opportunity to have a formal education, but learnt most of what he knew from his father, who was the governor of Ranong,” explained Ajarn Pranee. “I want to stress that because of his love for his Thai people, he was named the ‘Second Jewel’ after Prince Damrong, which at the time was the highest formal regard for ‘Good Governance.’” Considered the grandfather of the rubber industry in Thailand, the revered leader probably didn’t realize that the industry would continue to be an key resource for Thailand more than a century after his time. Today, it is by far Phuket’s largest export. Tragically, Phraya Rasda was fatally wounded after being shot by a Thai local government official. He died three months later, in a Penang hospital. The Penang government gave him a state funeral before his body was returned to Kantang. thephuketnews

QUESTION & ANSWER 11

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2014

B

Retiring in Thailand on a tourist visa?

ob & Paula in Phuket/Perth asked: We understood from the news [reported on August 28] that if we get the 60-day tourist visa in Perth, we might be able to extend for another 90 days? Also what’s the latest regulations for a retirement visa? My husband is a pensioner, but we also have a house in Australia, so still undecided if it is more practical to get a Retirement Visa or just continue to visit/ stay in Thailand on tourist visas.

Phuket Immigration Lt Col Napat Noosen answered: For Australian citizens visiting the Kingdom of Thailand, there are two visas that I suggest: Tourist and Non-immigrant. For the Tourist, the maximum length of stay you will be given at arrival is 60 days but you can extend this at an immigration office in Thailand for another 30 days. So the maximum stay without having to leave would be 90 days. For non-immigrant visas, you will be admitted for 90 days, and there are no in-country extensions. The other option, as an Australian, is to arrive without a visa. You will be given 30 days (if you came via airplane) plus the option to do one 30-day extension before your

initial 30 days is up, for a maximum stay of 60 days without having to leave. There are no limits for the amount of times Australian tourists can enter the country by plane without a visa. However, please note that the immigration officer may refuse you entry to the country on/after your second consecutive time arriving without visa. This is up to the discretion of the immigration officer at the airport. So, if you want to fly out of the country and return to Thailand, I recommend you apply for a visa at a Thai embassy first, guaranteeing entry into the country. The Retirement Visa/Stay Permit is your other option. To obtain this permit in Thailand, first you have to obtain a Non-Immigrant visa for three months (from a Thai embassy in your home country) and, then upon arriving to Thailand, apply for a stay permit at a Thai Immigration office, which would be for one year. Alternatively, you can get a one-year (multiple entry) non-immigrant visa from the Thai embassy in your home country As for the requirements for a retirement stay permit at an Immigration Office in Thailand, you must be at least 50 years old, provide your passport (signed copies of each page), have a Non-Immigrant visa, Departure Card TM.6, proof of meeting the finan-

cial requirements, Thai bank book (original), a letter from your Thai bank and three 4×5 cm photos taken with full face. To meet the financial requirements, you need B800,000 in your bank account or monthly income of at least B65,000 or a combination of both (the accumulative balance and income during a 12-month period is equal or more than B800,000). If you need to leave the country before your stay permit has expired, you must obtain a re-entry permit. The permit’s validity is subject to the validity of your permit to/ extension of stay. However, leaving Thailand without a re-entry permit automatically invalidates your stay permit. Moreover, you are required to report to the nearest Immigration Office every 90 days if you are on a long-term stay. Persons holding a multiple entry visa will simply depart Thailand and renew their extension of stay after each 90 day entry. If you are unable to obtain your stay extension inside Thailand, you will have to get a new non-immigrant visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate abroad, advisably from your home country. Apple Watch ‘too feminine’ says LVMH’s head of luxury watches

A

pple’s long-awaited smartwatch looks “too feminine” and its design will not stand the test of time, luxury giant LVMH’s watch guru has told German media. Apple CEO Tim Cook unveils the Apple Watch during a special event on September 9 in Cupertino, California Jean-Claude Biver, who heads the French group’s luxury-watch division, said the US tech titan had made “some fundamental mistakes” designing the Apple Watch. “This watch has no sex appeal. It’s too feminine and, furthermore, looks too much like the smartwatches already on the market,” Biver said in an interview with daily Die Welt. “To be totally honest, it looks like it was designed by a student in their first trimester,” added Biver, who heads up the brands Tag Heuer, Zenith and Hublot. Biver predicted that the much-anticipated device, with its square face and curved edges, would soon be outdated. “Luxury always has something timeless, it’s rare and conveys prestige,” he was quoted as saying, adding that the same could not be said for Apple Watch, which is expected to be bought by millions of customers and will likely be beyond repair within just a few years’ time. Biver is not the first watch chief to be dismissive

of Apple’s efforts. Swatch CEO Nick Hayek earlier told Swiss media that the world’s biggest watch group was “not nervous” about Apple’s foray into the market. Apple Watch, which comes in several colours and

links to the iPhone, will start at US$349 (B11,300) when it is released early next year. The wrist device is the first new product category to be launched by the company since the death of legendary co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, in 2011. AFP

THAI Airways to allow power-packs in carry-on luggage; gizmo addicts relieved

T

hose fearing their smartphones and tablets might run flat on long flights can breathe a sigh of relief — Thai Airways International (THAI) will now allow power banks in carry-on luggage. have power, will travel: Certain power banks will be allowed on THAI flights. However, but there will be limits on the capacity, and the devices will be banned from checked-in luggage. THAI will allow up to two largecapacity packs in carry-on bags. The airline will allow spare batteries with rechargers with capacities of less than 20,000 milliamp-hours (mAh). For power banks with capacities of 20,000-32,000mAh, passengers can take up to two packs in a carry-on bag. A power bank of more than 32,000mAh is prohibited in carry-on baggage. If one needs to be carried aboard, the passenger must make inquiries with THAI staff. However, an aviation source said that under no circumstances is a power bank of more than 32,000mAh allowed to be brought into an aircraft, citing the safety guidelines issued by the International Air Transport Association (Iata). Smud Poom-on, THAI’s director for emergency and crisis response management, told Thai Rath Online there had been incidents where battery packs had caused fires on planes in the past. “Battery packs are hazardous

objects. A lithium battery could catch fire if the temperature exceeds the limit,” he said. Suvarnabhumi airport director Raweewan Netarakavesana said strict security measures had been imposed in compliance with guidelines set by Iata regarding dangerous items, including spare batteries, to be carried on board or in checked-in luggage. The new measures are for the security and protection of passengers, she said. The aviation source said that since 2008, the US has declared spare lithium batteries to be dangerous items for flights after reports

showed they could overheat, catch fire and explode. The internal fire extinguisher system in the cargo hold of an aircraft may not be adequate to contain a fire started as the result of an explosion of many rechargeable lithium batteries packed in baggage. A small spark could also ignite a fire while the outer plastic cover of the batteries could melt, making it possible for the fire to spread. Mr Smud said an emergency incident involving batteries in carry-on bags is easier to handle as it could be spotted by passengers or crew. Bangkok Post thephuketnews

THEPHUKETNEWS.COM 4, 201419, 2014 THEPHUKETNEWS.COM FRIDAY, FRIDAY,APRIL SEPTEMBER

IN BRIEF Seasonal renewal

Not tonight, got a headache FILM REVIEW Tim Newton broadcast@classactmedia.co.th

SEX TAPE

DIRECTOR: Jake Kasdan STARRING: Jason Segel, Cameron Diaz, Rob Corddry RUNNING TIME: 94 mins

“A

married couple wake up to discover that the sex tape they made the evening before has gone missing, leading to a frantic search for its whereabouts.” That’s about it really. OK, I better write some more… Imagine you wanted to spice up your intimate moments with the “significant other”? Imagine filming a sex tape but it all goes wrong? Imagine making a major film about making a porno video selfie? Some people are not sure if the producers should have bothered. One critic… “This is just about the worst movie I can recall ever seeing in my entire life”. Another could have been Mary Whitehouse. “Shallow and perverted!” she opined. The “shallow and perverted” review is sure to drag in the crowd. Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) have had an active sexual relationship leading up to their marriage and subsequent two children. But their nocturnal gymnastics have since then almost completely fizzled. Despite trying to spice things up and genuine attempts in initiating a lovemaking session, they just can’t seem to pull it off (queue Benny Hill theme). But someone – who shouldn’t – gets hold of the sex tape and the rest of the movie follows the panic to get it back again. The captured copulation (on an iPad) is the modest high point. The rest of the 80 or so minutes is filler. The kids are too intelligent, the script seems unusually frank and vulgar (although

Talks of a new ‘Bourne’ Movie

given the subject, what else do you write?), the comments thrown at little kids seem a bit out of place in 2014 and the chemistry between Jason and Cameron is a little forced (there was much more simpatico in Bad Teacher). I could see a million little comedy opportunities coming up all the time but strangely avoided by the director and actors. It runs for 94 minutes but the funny bits hardly fill the preview. Diaz and Segal are great comedic talents and, if you are fans, you’ll get a few giggles. Hey, the popcorn and the tickets are cheap here in Thailand, so don’t let me put you off enjoying an afternoon or evening sitting in a dark room enjoying yourself. There was promise in the premise but the final result was a little underwhelming. For the woman who challenged herself in Being John Malkovich, Something About Mary, and Vanilla Sky, Diaz has voted for a simpler acting life with these odd scripting choices. Actor/Director Jake Kasdan, who also did Bad Teacher with the two actors, seems to be sharing the same low-brow workload to keep the money rolling in.

Sony is set to plunder the 1990s for its nex t hor ror remake, with the studio set to breathe new life into slasher caper I Know What You Did Last Summer. Written by Scream scribe Kevin Williamson, the original was part of the late-1990s boom in teen slasher movies, bringing in US$125 million at the box office and spawning a suitably half-baked sequel. The story focuses on a group of teens who find themselves stalked by the hookwielding figure they hit with a car and left for dead during a drunken night out. According to the report, Oculus director Mike Flanagan will write and produce the remake, although it is unclear whether he will also be occupying the director’s chair. Sony is thought to be planning this one as a low-budget venture in the vein of Oculus (which only cost US$12 million), with the aim being to have it ready for a 2016 release date.

plant life and first appeared in 2001. They most recently appeared on Wii U in 2013. The film is a compilation of three shorts “The Night Juicer,” in which Captain Olimar makes his favorite juice; “Treasures in a Bottle,” in which Pikmin meet a strange treasure; and “Occupational Hazards,” an adventure at a construction site. The Tokyo International Film Festival runs at Roppongi Hills and various venues around the city Oct. 25-31.

Despite months of denials, a nd months of rumors, sources say Damon and Greengrass are indeed talking to Universal about bringing the amnesiac assassin back to the big screen. And here’s the kicker: Greengrass would not only direct, but also write the script. (TheBourne trilogy was written by Tony Gilroy, among a handful of others scribes, and this would be the first time Greengrass, who wrote United 93 and directed the second and thirdBourne installments, will have a hand in penning the adventures.) If a deal is made – and talks are only in the early stages – it sets the stage for a return of the 21st Century’s first screen hero who threatened to upstage Bond. With their kinetic and visceral style, the movies made Damon into an A-lister who was able to command tens of millions for the sequels as the franchise raked in almost a billion dollars worldwide.

New 007 movie ready to roll

Bond 24 is expected to begin filming on December 6. Director Sam Mendes’s followup to Skyfall, which will see Daniel Craig return as the spy for his fourth film, has recently been in the process of a rewrite by long-time franchise writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. According to fansite MI6, the main cast will meet for a table read at Pinewood Studios in late November. MGM, Sony and Eon are yet to comment on this. Ralph Fiennes, whose Gareth Mallory will succeed Judi Dench’s M in the next film, previously stated that filming would begin in October, before the last-minute rewrite took place. Naomie Harris will return as Eve Moneypenny, Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner and Ben Whishaw as Q. Mendes has said Bond 24 will be part two of the Skyfall narrative.

Smugglers have also in part changed to illegally smuggling dog meat, rather than live dogs. This means these animals are being slaughtered in Thailand.

T

he Dog Meat Trade is a horrific and cruel, illegal industry and in 2011, the number of dogs illegally smuggled from Thailand through Laos to Vietnam was estimated at around 500,000. In reality, it could have been well over double these figures. Today, thanks to the efforts of Soi Dog, ACPA (Asia Canine Protection Alliance) and the Thai, Laotian and Vietnamese authorities, this number has been reduced to just a few thousand. This is a huge improvement over the figures in 2011; however, now the smugglers know that any overt live dog cargo will be intercepted and confiscated. They have therefore adapted their transit methods and changed the smuggling routes. Modified pick-up trucks are now preferred to large trucks because the consignment can be disguised better. Smuggling routes from the south of Thailand through Cambodia and into the south of Vietnam have opened up. Smugglers have also in part changed to illegally smuggling dog meat, rather than live dogs. This means these animals are being slaughtered in Thailand. Backyard butchering shops are still being discovered. A poster campaign developed by Soi Dog and financed by Soi Dog supporters urges people to call a free-call number if they spot any trucks carrying dogs or suspect and premises of selling dog meat. This campaign has saved thousands of dogs’ lives. For all those dogs rescued, a purposebuilt shelter in Buriram, Thailand has been built. There are now over 1,500 dogs living at this shelter. John Dalley, Vice President of the Soi Dog foundation stated that “There is a real need to find homes for as many of these dogs as possible. The majority are stolen pets and

extremely friendly but are struggling to survive in a shelter environment. It is extremely sad to see many of these dogs simply giving up and losing the will to live. Before being snatched from the streets they were used to living with families and cannot adapt to shelter life.” As part of Soi Dog’s adoption program, dogs rescued from the Dog Meat Trade are also promoted. This week three such lucky dogs from the Buriram shelter will be flying down to Phuket after being adopted overseas to Ireland, England and the USA. Naomi, Licorice and Jack were all victims of this barbaric trade and thanks to three Soi Dog supporters they have a second chance at a happy life. All adoption costs such as the flights and travel crates are covered by the adopters. For those interested in adopting in Thailand there are no adoption costs and all dogs are sterilized and vaccinated. For any domestic flights Nok Air provides these for free – the travel crate is the only cost to be covered by the adopter. he West Highland White Terrier or “Westie” as it is generally called is one of a group of Terriers originating in Scotland. They all hold a similarity in that they are rough coated and low to the ground to facilitate their natural hunting instinct in their very cold and rugged surroundings. They are very similar in construction, shape and size to their cousins the Cairn Terrier which comes in a variety of colours. The Westie is a small bundle of energy, spunk and devotion. Happy, lighthearted and loving of their humans, they are ideal pets which require little pampering. They are true terriers and will put their noses down and chase a scent so need to be kept within a confined area otherwise you will lose them as they run off to find their prey! Their general appearance is that of a small, game, well balanced and hardy looking terrier. Strongly built with a good deep chest and well ribbed. Their head which when groomed correctly should look round and be in proportion to the body. The tail is immediately off the topline and is trimmed to resemble the shape of a

carrot. It should never be so long as to appear higher than the head. It should be carried erect whenever on the move. The coat is of utmost importance. It is a double coat and the topcoat must be harsh with hard white hair about 5 cms in length with a slightly shorter coat on the neck and shoulders. When trimmed correctly the coat is blended in well and the underskirts should not be cut in a straight line but appear natural. The head is trimmed into a circle with slightly shorter hair on fore-face than on the cheeks and forehead. On the move they have a typical free and easy gait. Jaunty would be the one expression I would use to describe their movement. In temperament they are very courageous, will tackle large rats and kill them without a single thought. Such happy little people and loving with the entire family. They love to play ball and are great fun for children. Their only drawback is that they do need trimming around every two months and in between they should have their eyes cleaned daily and their claws clipped weekly.

Pet of the week

This week’s prized pet is Mimi. A poodle, she will be 2 years old this October. She likes to eat ice-cream, running very fast, and can jump very high. When she’s all drained, she loves to lie down with our big Monkey doll on the sofa (you can see from the photo). Normally she is quite naughty but when we carry her, she will pretend to be innocent. My husband got her from his friend since she was a puppy. thephuketnews

Remembering legends past of the Ryder Cup GOLF Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana in action against Pakistan.

Thai twin win ensures triumph over Pakistan TENNIS Tor Chittinand

THAILAND WILL RETURN to the Davis Cup’s Asia/Oceania Group 1 next year after winning the doubles against Pakistan to take an unassailable 3-0 lead yesterday. Twins Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana beat Aisam Qureshi and Aqeel Khan 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 at the National Tennis Development Centre in Muang Thong Thani. Sanchai said: “It was easier than we had expected. We are happy to help Thailand gain promotion to Group 1.” Thailand captain Paradorn Srichaphan said: “Sonchat and Sanchai had an excellent match. It is good that we gain promotion to Group 1 although it will be much tougher.’’ Thailand had won the opening singles matches against Pakistan on Friday. In today’s meaningless reverse singles, Thailand No.1 Danai Udomchoke is scheduled to meet Qureshi and Prachya Isarow will meet Samir Iftikhar, although both sides can change their players. In Perth, Lleyton Hewitt steered Australia back to the Davis Cup World Group with a dominating performance in the doubles win over Uzbekistan yesterday. The 33-year-old warhorse, continually fending off retirement questions, partnered Chris Guccione to a 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), 6-2 victory over the Uzbek pair, Denis Istomin and Farrukh Dustov, to clinch the tie. The 28-time Davis Cup champions were in an impreg-

nable position after Hewitt and youngster Nick Kyrgios won Friday’s opening singles in straight sets. The Australians, playing on their favoured grass, have not dropped a set so far in the tie ahead of today’s dead reverse singles. Hewitt, who took his 15year career Davis Cup winning tally to 56 matches with 41 singles and 15 doubles, has faced a barrage of enquiries about what his future holds. The grizzled veteran, who has undergone five painful surgeries in five years in an effort to prolong his career, including a knitting of the bone in his troublesome left foot, was his usual ferociously competitive self. The Aussie pair took just 100 minutes to roll out their straight-sets win in the doubles, shutting the door on Uzbekistan, who were bidding to reach the World Group for the first time. “We are complete opposite game styles, personalities, everything, in a lot of ways, but we team up really well though and we know what we’re going to get from one another on the court,” Hewitt said of Guccione, his doubles partner. “We don’t play a lot of doubles together, but I feel in these one-off matches we gel pretty well.” Australia captain Pat Rafter said big-serving Sam Groth would make his Davis Cup debut in one of today’s reverse singles matches. Australia were forced into a play-off to retain their status in the elite 16-nation World Group after a first-round loss to France in February. Bangkok Post

cotland has witnessed famous battles from time immemorial, none more decisive and significant than The Battle of Bannockburn, fought in 1314 on boggy ground near The River Forth, just south of Stirling. Scotland emerged victorious, the enemy duly vanquished. Now, 700 years later, a mere 20 miles or so northeast of Bannochburn, another confrontation looms, albeit of a sporting nature. The claymores, pikestaffs and broadswords have been replaced by wedges, putters and golf balls as two respective teams prepare for the biggest scrap in team golf. The Ryder Cup. The location is Gleneagles; the occasion the 40th Ryder Cup; the action starts on 26th September on a field of play created by Jack Nicklaus, a perfect venue for

(left to right) Phillip Price, 2002 Ryder Cup hero who beat Phil Mickelson; yours truly; and John Maher, business colleague and President of Licensed Victuallers Association. cup holders Team Europe and opponents, Team USA. Somewhat remarkably, The Ryder Cup has only once previously been played in Scotland, at Muirfield in 1973, when USA overcame GB & Ireland 19-13. Team Europe came into being in 1979 and in recent times have proved

the stronger, winning 7 of the last 10 encounters. Significantly Team USA have not won in Europe since 1993 at The Belfry, under the Captaincy of a certain Thomas Sturges Watson. Now 21 years later, Tom Watson will lead Team USA onto the fairways of Gleneagles, eager to wrestle the Ryder Cup from Paul McGinley’s Team Europe. So it is the wily 65-year-old pitched against the 47-year-old Irishman, worthy and highly respected opponents indeed, the former seeking victory in Europe for the first time in 21 years, the latter determined to prevent him. Eight time Major winner Watson , one of golf’s legends, played in four Ryder Cups (1977, 1981,1983, 1989), never on a losing Team. Now 65, he becomes the oldest Captain in Ryder Cup history as he leads the team for the second time – 21 years after the 1993 memorable Belfry victory.

McGinley was aged just 10 when Watson made his Ryder Cup debut, and he too has never been on the losing side having played in 3 Ryder Cups (2002,03 ,04) and being Vice-Captain in 2010 and 2012. From a long list of Irish golfing heroes he becomes the first Irishman to captain the Ryder Cup side. Welshman Phillip Price played a major part in the same 2002 Ryder Cup Team. The Teams were tied going into the Sunday singles. It was nip and tuck but the momentum swung for Europe after underdog Price pulled off an incredible and unexpected 3&2 win over Phil Mickelson, leaving Europe needing a half point for victory. This was perhaps the finest moment of Price’s career and it was left to McGinley to make the Cup winning putt. The Belfry reverberated on that occasion ... and the Glens of Perthshire will do so again if McGinley’s squad can pull off yet another famous victory.

Phuket FC’s swift new striker reveals drive are the beaches. The style of football here is very technical – sometimes fast, sometimes slow, it depends on the team, but overall it’s good. The fans are amazing and I think without their presence, football would not have grown as much as it has in the past few years that I’ve been here.

he island’s pro football outfit, Phuket FC are resting anxiously in September as Thailand’s pro leagues break for the 17th Asian Games taking place in Incheon, South Korea. We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to new players, starting with an interview we had with recent signing, a talented national squad player for Trinidad & Tobago. Please introduce yourself. I am Kendall Jagdeosingh. I was born and grew up in Manzanilla, Trinidad. I was born on May 30, and turned 28 this year. Can you tell us about your background in sports, football? Sure. I came from a sporting family, grew up playing a lot of basketball and football, but as I got older, started playing football more, and started playing professionally at the age of 16.

What accomplishments are you proud of most? I’d say, playing for the national teams for my country by age 19, playing along side with

the likes of Dwight Yorke (legendary Man U striker), Stern John and Kenwyne Jones (forward for EPL’s Cardiff City), and have played with the senior team as well as the U-23, U-21 and U-20. My debut for the senior team was in a match against Japan in June, 2006. How did you end up in Thailand? Well, after playing soccer professionally in America for four years, the opportunity came along for me to play for TPL’s Chainat FC and I took it. I played there for two years in the TPL, then played for Trat FC for the first half of this season, until my contract

ended, when I got a call from the manager of Phuket expressing their delight for me to join Phuket FC. The club has big ambitions and I was happy with how they approached me, so I decided to join. What’s your impression of the Thai League so far? As for the football itself, my impression is positive, but one major drawback is dealing with unfair officiating. I think this is the main problem in Thai football and it will not benefit the league in terms of growing. I love the culture of Thailand. I’ve made some great friends and met some good people. I love the food. The weather is similar to my country, as

How does it compare to your home country? The football culture is a little different because in my country, they don’t put much money into the sport, so the fans don’t show up and aren’t as passionate as they are in Thailand. It’s also at a higher level here, particularly regarding the facilities, which are excellent compared to back home. But the football skills are more or less the same, though I think the players in my country are a little more athletic and rough. What football players do you look up to? I have a few. I like Didier Drogba the most, followed by Zidan, Ronaldhino and Juan Roman Riquelme. What is your secret weapon (what brand of boots do you wear)? Mercurial Vapor is what I’ve worn ever since I started playing pro football.

PSS Intl youth tourney returns to Phuket FOOTBALL PHUKET SOCCER SCHOOLS (PSS) is getting ready to host its second National Youth Tournament on the weekend of September 27 and 28. To be contested on the pitches of Thanyapura in Thalang, the upcoming tournament includes four age divisions – Under 8, U-10, U-12 and U-14.

Following last year’s successful inaugural edition, PSS have been inundated with interest from teams from all over Thailand. This year’s sell out tournament will involve clubs flying in from various points of Thailand including Bangkok, Pattaya, Koh Samui plus some of our own island’s teams. Over 320 players will be involved during the weekend as football memories are cre-

ated and new friends found. Because of the partnership between PSS and Thanyapura players will be fortunate to showcase their football skills at Thanyapura’s World Class facility in Thalang, where PSS splits up the huge astro turf fields into smaller age appropriate football pitches. Age-appropriate goals/ footballs are used to keep the games as developmental as possible. No players will leave Phuket empty-handed as all will receive tournament medals. The format of the event sees 1st / 2nd / 3rd collect trophies using a

divisional table. Spectators are welcome to attend the tournament, and entrance is free of charge. Thanyapura 1,500 seated covered grandstand will be rocking with cheers and excitement next weekend. Hot Food will be available under the grandstand throughout the weekend. The event started in the early morning with a keynote address from Phuket Vice-Governor Dr Sommai Preechasilpa and a welcome speech from JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa’s General Manager and chairman of the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation Mr. Oriol Montol,

Additionally, part of the fun raised on the event will support the foundation and hotels’ newest project, The Marine Turtle Shelter & Education Center, which will serve as a home for injured turtles who are unable to return to the sea. Once in operation in April of 2015, it will welcome four injured turtles including ‘Tommy the Turtle’ who was born

nine months ago at the PMBC, with no eyes. adamel Falcao made his debut as ManchesterUnited belatedly kickstarted their season with a breezy 4-0 win at home to Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League on Sunday. The 28-year-old Colombia striker, a loan signing from Monaco, made his entrance as a 67th-minute replacement for Juan Mata, but by then United had already secured an overdue first victory of the season. Falcao, who squandered a late chance, had been the focus of pre-match attention, but it was £59.7 million ($98 million, 75 million euros) record signing Angel di Maria who stole the show on his home debut. The Argentina winger put Louis van Gaal’s side ahead with a 24th-minute free-kick and had a hand in further goals by Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Mata asUnited blew off the cobwebs in style. While United climbed to ninth in the table, seven points below leaders Chelsea but only two points shy of the top four, QPR remain 16th, a point above the bottom three. Falcao began the game on

Blind anchored a midfield diamond in front of a flat back four, with Herrera and Di Maria either side of him and Mata supporting strikers Rooney and Robin van Persie. The sight of former Old Trafford favourite Rio Ferdinand, now of QPR, receiving a memento fromUnited director Bobby Charlton prior to kickoff only reinforced the sense of a changing of the guard. with Mata spooning a shot over from Herrera’s cut-back, and mid-way through the first half they went ahead. Di Maria posed a constant threat and he supplied the breakthrough, whipping in a free-kick from wide on the right that eluded everyone to creep in at the far post. Jonny Evans then had to block a shot from Matt Phillips after United goalkeeper David de Gea charged from his goal and missed his kick, but 10 minutes before half-

time the hosts doubled their advantage. Di Maria was again the inspiration, driving deep into QPR territory and neatly flicking the ball inside for Rooney. The United captain’s shot was blocked, but he steered the rebound into the path of Herrera, who drove a first-time shot into the bottom-left corner. The game was up a minute before the break. A slick exchange initiated by Di Maria culminated in Herrera teeing up Rooney to drill a

After De Gea had saved with his feet from QPR, Mata added a fourth in the 58th minute, firing into the roof of the net from Di Maria’s miscued shot. Falcao almost crowned his debut with a goal, but after Green had parried a skidding shot from Blind, the former England goalkeeper sprang up quickly to save at the Colombian’s feet. AFP

Former Chelsea coach lured to TPL’s BEC Tero Liverpool downs Bulgarian FOOTBALL THAI PREMIER LEAGUE side BEC Tero Sasana has hired former Chelsea manager Avram Grant as its technical director. The 59-year-old Israeli, who was unveiled by the Fire Dragons on Tuesday, is the club’s second high-profile official after former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson,

who was appointed to the same position in 2012. Grant, who guided Chelsea to the 2008 Champions League final, will work closely with coach Jose Alves and general manager Robert Procureur. ‘’I come here to help make the team become better,’’ Grant told a press conference. He declined to promise if he would bring success to BEC Tero but said he would try to turn a club into a major force

at home and abroad. “I come here to create chances for the team — that’s my job.’’ BEC are third in the TPL on 59 points, seven behind leaders Buriram United with six matches to go. The league is taking a break for the Asian Games and will resume next month. Procureur said: “Avram will attend our players’ training sessions and oversee the players’ technical development. This is a fantastic opportunity for our players to learn from such a highly respected coach. “It reflects BEC Tero Sasana’s commitment to doing all it can to produce the best results for the club and its supporters.” Also on Tuesday, BEC Tero and Brazilian club Cruzeiro signed a five-year partnership agreement. Under the deal, the two clubs will exchange coaches, players and knowledge with the aim to develop young players

Avram Grant in Bangkok and build the teams’ international profile. As part of the co-operation, Cruzeiro will send two or three of their promising young players to train and play with the Fire Dragons. Furthermore, BEC junior players will be invited to participate in Cruzeiro’s U15 tournament each December. BEC Tero chairman Brian Marcar said: “This is an exciting project for both clubs and ushers in a new era for player development.’’ Bangkok Post

STEV EN GER R A R D scored a 93rd-minute penalty as Liverpool scraped past competition debutants Ludogorets Razgrad 2-1 on their return to the Champions League after a five-year absence on Tuesday. After labouring to break the Bulgarian champions down, Liverpool took an 82nd-minute lead through Mario Balotelli, only for visiting substitute Dani Abalo to equalise in the first minute of stoppage time. But with Ludogorets on the brink of a memorable shock result, their goalkeeper Milan Borjan – who only joined the club on Sunday – felled Javi Manquillo and Gerrard gave the hosts victory from the spot.

“To get the result was excellent. They showed great character to keep going,” said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, whose side visit Basel in their next Group B fixture. “We had signs of anxiety. We are not at the level we were at last year yet, but that will come with time.” It was a cruel finale for Georgi Dermendzhiev’s Ludogorets, who must now rouse themselves for the challenge of hosting defending champions Real Madrid in their next fixture on October 1. Liverpool’s starting XI featured five players who were sampling the Champions League for the first time, including Raheem Sterling, who had started Saturday’s 1-0 loss at home to Aston Villa on the bench. Gerrard was the only survivor from Liverpool’s last Champions League game in 2009. AFP thephuketnews

Police end Vagabond hopes in finals of Haad Yai Sevens RUGBY THE PHUKET VAGABONDS set off on Friday (September 12) to go compete in the Haad Yai International 7s competition. After a long drive, the Vagabonds were fresh and ready first thing on Saturday morning to start their pool games. First up was the Seradang Angels from Malaysia, the Vagabonds coming out on top with a 14-7 victory with Michael Whippy and Skipper Darryn Mathee scoring the tries and Darryn converting both. Second game was against the Royal Thai Navy which saw the Vagabonds go down 29-0 putting the Vagabonds second in their group. At the end of day 1 the Vagabonds suffered a major loss with Thomas Park pulling his hamstring to rule him out for the rest of the competition and skipper Darryn Mathee

injuring his ribs but still soldering on to keep his teams hopes alive. Day 2 started as the Vagabonds had to face DBKL and lost 29-7, with Justin swart scoring the try and Darryn Mathee converting. This put the Vagabonds down into the plate division with the semi-finals against the mixed services and winning convincingly 36 – 0 with tries from Darryn 2, Steven Cox 2, Garrett Cutler and Michael Whippy. T

he semi-final playoff between ICC and Thalang was shortened by a lengthy rain delay and ended with calculators out on the ground and ICC being awarded entry into the Outrigger Twenty20 cup final. Thalang’s captain won the toss and elected to field, reasoning that any rain delay would favor the team batting second. Junaid Mohammad got ICC off to a fast start, hitting five boundaries in the first five overs while his team lost Shah Ullah to the pace of Barrie Buck, and Anand Chand to a Simon Wetherell run-out. Buck took the wicket of Mohammad, caught behind for 31 of his team’s 49 runs. Arun Virdikar and Darshan Vaigankar saw ICC safely to drinks and a Virdikar 6 off the last ball before the break made his water taste a little better, with ICC on 67/3. ICC had to take more risks with their running and paid the price with wicket keeper Andrew McMillan effecting two run-outs at the bowlers’ end to keep Thalang in the match. Vaigankar (25 runs) made the decision to retire with a

An eight-run final over brought ICC to 121/7. Thalang started their innings slowly, taking 16 runs off five overs, before Andrew McMillan clobbered an Arun Virdikar ball for 4, only to see his off stump flattened by the next ball. Simon Wetherell played out 10 dot balls to start his inning and after eight overs Thalang were 27/1, still 95 runs shy of victory. The introduction of ICC’s Abdul Saleam and Prashant Shetgaonker worked like petrol on a fire and Thalang were 53/1 at drinks. With dark clouds looming, Wetherell and Craig Murphy worked toward getting Tha-

lang’s nose in front of ICC’s run rate. Darshan Vaigankar bowled Murphy (26 runs) in the 13th over and just before rain stopped play in the 14th over there were two consecutive run-outs leaving Thalang 84/4 dangling just below ICC’s run rate of 6.050 per over. After the rain had moved away the umpires decided that only 19 overs could be bowled in the time left and that the reduced match would be decided on run rate. Four balls after the restart, Vaigankar and Ravi Naik had taken two more wickets, bringing youngster Paan to the crease with the not-out Wetherell. On track for victory in the 18th over, Wetherell (42) was judged LBW and the match had taken yet another twist with Thalang now 111/7 and only

Thai youth players to come. Saleam bowled Karn with the next ball and 16-yearold David joined Paan in the middle. He defended two balls and then a run off the last ball of the over gave the inexperienced David the strike for the 19th and final over. Wiht ICC’s Anand Chand bowling the last over. Paan scampered through for a bye and then, on the fourth ball flicked one off his legs for two runs, bringing the score to 115 for 8. ICC celebrated victory on the pitch. Numbers were given to the umpires indicating that ICC had the best run rate, giving them the win. Later on it was revealed that a miscalculation had been made and in fact Thalang had a superior run rate. But Thalang are unlikely to protest the result and ICC will play off for the Outrigger Twenty20 cup this Sunday afternoon (September 21) against Patong BBB’s.
