ust four weeks ago Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada publicly announced there was enough water on the island for everyone until the next rainy season arrives in May next year. Yet residents in the eastern reaches of Wichit, southeast of Phuket Town, are already on forced water rations,

and many relying on the water delivery trucks to bring relief to their homes. Phuket V ice Governor D r Prachiad Aksornthamakul, who sits on the provincial water supply committee, this week called on everyone across the island to keep reserves of at least 200 litres of water in their homes in “case of emergency”. In Wichit, that “emergency” occurs all too often, with entire residential areas having their water mains supply redirected to serve other nearby

areas on rotation, confir ed hatchai Meechai, chief of the PWA’s water management division. “There is not enough water pressure to ensure water supply consistently reaches homes all along Cape Panwa,” he said. “We do the best we can, and we only reduce water pressure – not shut it off – every two days, so that one area, such as K hao K had, has consistent pressure for two days, then the next area, say the end of Cape

Luckily, no one was injured in the accident, which occurred on Phra Baramee Rd, in front of Wat Suvarnakeereewong School. Pol Major Yingyong Chuaikit of Patong Police was alerted to the accident at 3:15am and joined rescue workers at the scene, where they found a black Honda Civic with Phuket plates, f lipped over in the middle of the road. About 30 metres away, there was a greyish-bronze-coloured Toyota Altis with green taxi plates and a crunched rear.

Police questioned the owner of the taxi, Metee Sontem, 22, who told them he had parked his car on the side of the road the previous night before going to bed at a residence nearby. “Mr Metee said he had been awoken by a loud sound and came out to inspect,” said Maj Yingyong. The dri er of the flipped Hond a Civic, named as 28-year-old Chadchai U bonlong, was also questioned by police after miraculously crawling out from his car without any noticeable injury. “We believe he had been speeding, and will be testing his alcohol blood level too,” concluded Maj Yingyong. Protest leader Choowong Maneechan said, “In the past, local and forestry officials have not been honest with us and have allowed the business owner to do what ever they pleased with the land. “They have even let them profit on an expired land concession for more than 10 years… We want the 100,000 rai to be returned to the poor.”

provide an alternative water source closer to the community it serves, he added. “I believe that this project will be finished ne t year, r Sakkamol said. Meanwhile, Mr Chatchai of the PWA says the problem is that Sakdidet Rd and areas further along the cape receive their water from mains that first supply hu et Town “We do our best for people on Sakdidet Road, but the fastgrowing high-density of the population living in the area has outpaced the ability of mains to serve them. “That is why the PWA has a project to upgrade water mains all across Phuket. He did, however, urge people with water supply problems to call the PWA hotline at 082-79 01634. “The PWA Call Centre is the best option. ONLY ONE SUSPECT INvolved in the Thalang riot has so far been arrested, and o cials are asking for locals to urge known suspects to surrender peacefully when their names are released to public. “Officials are gathering more information on the suspects and are planning to release the names of those they are sure were involved in the riot by the end of this month,” Thalang Police Chief Col Chanuchan Cholsuwat said on Tuesday (Nov 17 ). “We did arrest one suspect by chance a few weeks ago. He was a 16 -year-old boy who was found in possession of kratom leaves and it turned out he was on the wanted list. He is now being held at a juvenile detention centre,” he added. An angry mob stormed

Thalang Police Station after two local men were killed in a police chase in Thalang on Oct 10. The mob grew as the hours went on, and this led to riot which resulted in B6 . 7 mn worth of damage to property and injury to a number of o cers. So far, more than 6 6 warrants have been issued for suspects involved in the riots. “Most of the suspects on the wanted list are teenagers so we would prefer it that they surrender peacefully to avoid any conflict or violence, we want to deal with them softly,” Col Chanuchan said. “Investigators will hand their findings and release the names of those on the wanted list to community leaders, village headmen and parents to help bring these suspects in,” he added. Getting your cat safely sent to foreign shores The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

Dear Ross and Nicole, thanks so much for your question regarding the process for taking your cat from Phuket to Austria. And thanks for being very responsible people. All too frequently, foreigners relocating from Phuket simply dump their dog or cat on the street because they think it is too complicated or costly to take the animal with them. In fact, the process is very simple and inex pensive: • Y our cat must be mi-

crochipped. This is a simple process that can be undertaken at most veterinary practices. • Y our cat also needs to be vaccinated against Rabies. This process takes around four months, so it’s best to plan well in advance. A sample of your cat’s blood is sent off to a laboratory in the EU for analysis one month after the vaccine has been given. Providing your cat has developed antibodies, he or she can travel to Austria three months later. There is no need for your cat to spend additional time in quarantine in Austria. Phuket

Animal Hospital or Talang V eterinary Clinic are ex amples of vets clinics that take care of this entire process for you. • Y our cat can travel to Austria in two ways. Y ou will need to buy an appropriate crate for both options. If returning on the same flight as you, your cat can travel as accompanied baggage. Remember to check that the airline you fly with allows cats in the hold. If not travelling on the same flight, the cat can be sent as cargo using a cargo agent such as Skytrade, who

are based at Phuket airport and are very ex perienced in sending animals by this method. The total cost is based on the siz e of the crate and for a cat the cost is not much different to the cost of taking accompanied, though if travelling more than five days after yourself may be classified as commercial import, which could involve some customs duty in Austria. • The total cost of getting your cat to Austria, including microchip, vaccines, blood test, cage and flight is around B20,000. After the meeting Gov Chamroen revealed that Mr Hatogh wanted to know how the beach management system was progressing and what effect it will have on tourists in general. “Mr Hatogh and Mr Smulders were informed about the 10 per cent zones and that umbrellas and mats are allowed in them,” Gov Chamroen said. “The beach encroachment issue also was another topic of discussion. I told them that the only beach that still has this

rom left etherlands onorary onsul to huket e en mulders, o ernor hamroen ipayapongtada and etherlands mbassador to hailand arel atogh. issue is Surin and that the local authority has been ordered to solve the problem by the end of this month,” he added. Mr Hatogh pointed out to the governor that the main locations for jet-skis and parasails on the beaches are mostly in the centre section of the beach, he feels they should be relocated because that area has many activities, is often crowded and could be prone to accidents. “Mr Hatogh suggested moving the jet-ski and para-sail zones to a spot at each end of the beach for safety reasons,”

said Gov Chamroen. Another issue where Mr Hatogh wanted to see change was taxis fares. “Mr Hatogh said he has received so many complaints from tourists about the outrageous taxis fares on the island and he wants tourists to be treated fairly. “The Land Transport O ffice ust find a solution to stop this, maybe by setting up a median price, but I will inform the LTO at our next next meeting. “I also told him that more metered taxis will be intro-

duced so people can call for their service anywhere and anytime via a Line application. Moreover, I explained that all drivers of public transport will have to have extensive training and be educated on driving and traffic laws, e plained Gov Chamroen. “We also talked about the parking situation at Patong beach, and I told them that in the near future Patong will have two parking zones equipped with CCTV to ensure the safety of residents and tourists when leaving and getting in or out of their vehicles. “O ne parking zone will be for tourist transportation and other for public transportation,” he added. Gov Chamroen went on to say that at the end of the meeting, Mr Hatogh said that Phuket should have a public transportation system that runs all over the island, and that it should be affordable for everyone. “I will certainly be discussing all of Mr Hatogh’s and Mr Smulders’ suggestions and ideas at the next meeting of city officials, concluded o Chamroen.

Don’t put blame, put it right

W

ith Phuket being a world-class holiday destination, one would have thought that the island’s infrastructure would also be world class. Sadly, this is not the case. O ne only has to drive around the island to see how poor the roads are kept, or unkept, as the case may be. There’s a lot of ongoing construction going on around the island, and this is one thing to blame for some of the road conditions. O ne such construction is that of the a ong underpass, already several months behind schedule, and one that has had scorn poured upon it recently by the Phuket Governor. However, one thing that the Governor failed to scorn is the new drainage system being installed alongside the underpass route. This is part of the underpass project

As simple as high school geography R e: Phuket Poll: Did the Darasamut U nderp ass w ork? In high school geography, students learn about the “friction of distance”. This tells us that where “friction” is reduced, increased flow will result y building better roads we reduce the friction of distance and the consequence is that because travel is easier, more people choose to tra el thus traffic volume will generally increase. In a short time this negates the gains made by building the better road. It becomes a vicious circle as new roads are quickly overloaded (more friction) and must again be widened or odified to help traffic flow. Roads D O N’T solve congestion, they create it. This is high school geography, not rocket science, and planners the world over ignore it. The solution is restricting the number of vehicles either by incentive or dis-incentive. Cheap, convenient, reliable, efficient public transport gets people out of cars. Light rail systems replace buses. Well designed SAFE pedestrian and cycle routes encourage walking and cycling. Some cities have woken up to this.

and has been ongoing since February. elays of these drains first came down to a lack of building sand, and the latest is that the Governor insists that work on the underpass is a priority. This resulted in Wiwat Cons. Co Ltd, responsible for both the underpass and the drains, allocating all its workers to focus on the underpass. Yes, we understand what the Governor has ordered, but the work on those drains is now not due to be complete until June 2016. A nearby international hospital has built a complete new wing in the time the drain construction has been ongoing. A further infrastructure project that seriously needs attention is the island’s water supply, as evidenced by our page one story. Though Wichit Municipal Council chairman Sakkamol

hawillai ul ad its there is not not enough water for residents in Wichit, the Phuket Waterworks Authority played down complaints and even went as far as to ask people to get their own water supply. If locals are paying the water authority for a water supply, why should they need an additional source Mr Sakkamol even stated that this has been a long-standing problem, but nothing has ever been done to resolve it. Now, would this be the case if Wichit were a tourist area ould it be acceptable to leave tourists with no running water If Phuket wants to continue to be seen as a world-class tourist destination, it must have the infrastructure to match. O fficials, shouldn’t just pass blame for the poor infrastructure, they should ust fi it

HAVE YOUR SAY

In some cities in Europe they are re-installing the trams they threw out decades ago, and building dedicated cycle ways that are free of cars altogether. What is needed in Phuket is some serious planning around how many PEO PLE the island can handle before its attraction is destroyed by overcrowding of residents and tourists; and then some real planning around how those people get here and move about the island. The key word is thin first Mr Matt

Bangkok gains, Nai Harn loses R e: Phuket’s ‘ H ollyw ood M useum’ set for Friday show dow n This will be nothing but a silly dog and pony show, and I predict that the project will be stuffed down Naiharn’s throat, like it or not. “Rawai Municipality officers have finished their study of the new plans for the Hollywood Museum,” Mr Aroon said. ah yeah, a total re a p of plans in three days...and a thorough review/ study by local officials aloney The only thing any officials care about is the 40 million baht that will

be wasted on themselves and their cronies for this idiotic project. It seems like the only people that want this stupid thing are the croo ed officials in ang o that won t ha e to live with this crappy display in their own back yard, and the construction contractor that has probably agreed to share his contact award with his cronies fa ily in R ichard Vickers

‘Fake death’ fugitive mum faces life in jail SONGKHLA

T

hailand is working closely with Malaysia and Indonesia to monitor regional terrorist groups reportedly linked to the Islamic State (IS) group, according to the National Security Council (NSC). The IS carried out the attacks in Paris last Friday that killed 129 people. NSC secretary-general Gen Thawip Netniyom said intelligence reports have suggested some terrorist groups in the region have links with the IS, such as Abu Sayyaf, Jemaah Islamiyah and alQ aeda. “But the intelligence community, including our neighbouring countries, insist no IS members have entered the southern border area of Thailand. “However, we must take precautions and be on guard,” Gen Thawip said. “As far as I am concerned, there are no signs that violent groups in the southern border areas of Thailand will join the IS,” he said. He said the jihadis in the IS have a different approach to militant groups in the far South. Many Muslims in the far South are opposed to the IS, believing its activities violate Islamic guidelines, he said. The NSC chief said D eputy Prime Minister and D efence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon had ordered comprehensive surveillance, including watching for any movements in the region of people linked to the IS and U ighurs. @thephuketnews

Thai authorities are still holding 55 male U ighur illegal migrants, and have already sent 43 U ighur women and children to third-party countries including Turkey. Earlier, 109 male U ighurs were deported to China. They were also checking the backgrounds of some other U ighurs here, and if they have clean records they will also be sent to third-party countries, Gen Thawip said. Security agencies have been instructed to watch out for more illegal immigrants arriving, including U ighur and ohingya, once the onsoon period ends, the NSC secretary-general said. Gen Prawit said on Tuesday (Nov 17) he had instructed all relevant agencies to boost security during upcoming festivities including Loy K rathong and New Year’s celebrations in the wake of the Paris attacks. Securit y will also be stepped up during events scheduled for next month – the “Bike for D ad” cycling event and the royally-sponsored cremation rites for the late Supreme Patriarch.

Security has also been heightened along all borders, particularly with Malaysia, as the government had earlier received reports of suspects in Malaysia with possible ties to the IS, said Gen Prawit. Also on Tuesday, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said that while it is necessary to step up security, authorities need to make sure the tight measures do not scare off tourists in the high season. Tourism and Sports Minister K obkarn Wattanavrangkul said the prime minister stressed the need to provide protection for tourists during the high season starting this month, with more tourist police deployed at major tourist spots and airports. Police spokesman Pol Gen D ejnarong Suthicharnbancha said national police chief Chakthip Chaijinda had given the order to step-up security at foreign embassies, particularly the French embassy. He had also ordered police intelligence units to look for more concrete information regarding the movements of terrorist groups. Bangkok Post

THE SO NGK HLA WO MAN who allegedly faked her death to escape jail for planning the urder of her son s fianc e turned herself in to police on Wednesday (Nov 18). Juree Jan-ngam, 72, of Chumphon’s Tha Sae district, however, maintained her innocence as she surrendered at the Crime Suppression D ivision (CSD ). She would be handed over to Songkhla court, where she had been sentenced to life imprisonment. Juree was released on bail while the case was pending an appeal with the Supreme Court. In February last year, her family lodged a petition with the court seeking dismissal of the case on the ground that she had died. Juree was charged and indicted with arranging the contract killing of her son’s fianc e, iewprae hoti arn, 26, a pharmacist who was three months pregnant, in Songkhla province on D ec 13, 2007. Narin Janchay, 36, the alleged gunman, was arrested and indicted.

Convicted of killing her son’s fiancee, Juree Jan-ngam then faked her own death and went on the run. Photo: Pornprom Satrabhaya. iewprae s assistant, dison Pratheeptas, was also killed by stray bullets in the shooting at a clinic in K huan Niang district of Songkhla. The shooting took place about two weeks before the planned wedding on D ec 29 the same year with Juree’s son, Wikrom Jan-ngam, 36. The Criminal Court found the pair guilty of murder and sentenced them to death. The Court of Appeal stood by the decision and released Juree on B5-million bail as the case went to the Supreme Court. Narin remained behind bars pending appeal. n ebruary last year, assamee Jan-ngam, Juree’s

daughter, petitioned the court to dismiss the case, claiming her mother was dead. She had a death certificate issued by Tha Sae district authorities and claimed the body was cremated at Wat Maneesop. owe er, uedee as ingmanee, the mother of the victim, lodged a complaint with the CSD to investigate the claim. Police became suspicious that Juree faked her death. The prosecution challenged s assa ee s petition and asked the court to question six witnesses including the temple undertaker. The witnesses told the court no funeral was held. Tha Sae district authorities clai ed the death certificate was issued by a village headan who erified the death The court ruled she was not dead and intentionally jumped bail. The Supreme Court later issued a ruling in her absence, finding her guilty as charged but commuting the death sentence to life. CSD police chief Akkaradet Pimolsri said yesterday that after police stepped up efforts to hunt down Juree, her family made contact saying she would surrender. Bangkok Post

their conversational English, and learn new English-teaching techniques that will help promote a higher level of student engagement. After the si -week training programme, the ministry will select teachers thought to be the best

trainees to become trainers of the ne t group of Thai English teachers undergoing the same training, Mr elby said. The other teachers will be sent to teach in schools. These teachers will be closely monitored by the ministry for one school term before o cials assess whether their teaching had improved their students’ English skills, Mr elby said. The ministry will compare the performance of the trained teachers with teachers who did not attend the programme, he said. Asked whether the si -week training course would be enough to improve the abilities of Thai English teachers, Mr elby said he was confident the course was long enough to change the teachers’ teaching style. e was also confident the teachers would be fluent in conversational English in si weeks. “These teachers do have some training. They are already qualified teachers, so we do not start from ero. All we have to do is to give them additional tools and motivate them, as words supercharge them to make them better at what they already do,” he said. B a n g ko k Po st

Way of the Millennium PHUKET EXPAT FINANCE

T

here’s really no such thi ng as a per fect investment. For an investment to be “perfect” , it would have to earn the highest possible returns with the lowest possible risk. And the necessary balance between risk and reward would almost certainly be achieved by diversifying the investment’s holdings across numerous asset classes, while simultaneously adhering to an intelligent and systematic program of risk management. Of course, most “everyday folk” do not possess the knowhow or resources to tackle the complex ities of investment and risk management on so grand a scale. They do, however, have the ability to employ a manager who can do all that for them. And one manager who has done all of this successfully for a quarter of a century is the multi-billionaire Israel “Iz z y” Englander, who runs the Millennium Fund based in New Y ork. Englander was born in Brooklyn in 19 4 8 , graduated from New Y ork University in 19 7 0 and by 19 7 6 – at the tender age of 28 – he was trading from his own seat on the American Stock Ex change. is first brokerage, Israel A. Englander & Co, was founded in 19 7 7 and in 19 8 9 he cofounded Millennium Partners. I y Englander is a firm believer in putting his money where his mouth is. Asked about this in 2010 he stated: “I have roughly 20 per cent

Marriott buys out Starwood for $12bn Let the experts listen to the market when it comes to making serious, sound investment decisions. Photo: AFP of my wealth invested in my funds so I have an ex tra incentive to monitor the risks and rewards” . Today, Millennium has over US$ 3 1 billion (more than B1. 1 trillion) under management, which means Iz z y has backed his strategy with around US$ 8 00 million (B28 . 4 billion) of his own money. Millennium’s business model is based on allocating capital to about 17 0 trading teams around the world, each focusing on the specific strategies in which they specialise, all under the firm’s ultra-strict risk management rules. The fund holds thousands of positions at any time, and together the traders make over two million relatively modest trades in an average day. The fund often makes only small returns from each trade, a strategy which Englander refers to as “picking

up nickels and dimes” . The concept is very simple: allocate a limited amount of capital to each trade, ensuring any losses per trade are limited; diversify the portfolio across thousands of trades; deal only in liquid, ex change-traded securities take profits from the winners; cut losing positions. And cutting losers is something which Iz z y takes seriously. According to a former Millennium trader, “He hates losses. He also has a major bullsh* t detector. If he hires someone who says they’re doing a certain strategy and he finds out they’re doing something else, he won’t tolerate that. ” In fact, Iz z y Englander recently sacked one of his top performing traders over the past five years for losing just 5 % in a year. Putting this in the contex t

of the fund’s overall performance, this individual trader’s loss would have reduced an 8 % annual return for Millennium to… well, to an 8 % annual return, which tells you how much Iz z y hates taking risks and hates losing any amount of money. But his risk-averse approach has certainly not impeded the growth of the company, which today has 1,6 00 employees in 1 o ces around the world. Since 19 9 0 the Millennium Fund has grown by over 1,4 00% , becoming one of the most successful funds in the world. The multi-strategy asset management philosophy has resulted in a 12% annualised return over 25 years, while the stringent risk management has meant the fund only lost money (-5 . 8 % ) in one of those years. But with all this success

will Iz z y ever decide to take his finger off the pulse at Millennium? Highly unlikely. In his own words: “I have no place to go. My wife didn’t marry me to have lunch. ” For investors looking for a highly-regulated, low-volatility investment, with the consistency of bonds but the returns of stocks, then they may want to consider owning a piece of Iz z y Englanders success. But while Iz z y may not plan to retire and have lunch with his wife, his Millennium Fund will likely reach its full capacity within the nex t 12 months, so potential investors best hurry. SAY NO to dolphinariums

Using education to raise awareness on the savageness that still exists

O

n the day the Nemo Phuket Dolphins Show officially opened its doors in Phuket, kids from Gecko Community were flying in the opposite direction to be part of the team of Cove Monitors for Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project. The group monitors and records the dolphin slaughter and the captivity process in Taiji, Japan each day during the season, and for the Gecko kids this was their second visit this year. One teacher and one parent accompanied the eight kids to the infamous Cove where every year from September 1 to March 30 fisherman go out daily and hunt for dolphins. Gecko Community began its fight for the dolphins over a year ago when they discovered a dolphinarium was opening in Phuket. The kids fundraised for their trip by embarking on another 100km bike ride to JW Marriott in Khao Lak before they flew out to Japan. Gecko believes that no one is too small to make a difference and instills in their kids that they are the changes that will happen in the future. “Returning to the Cove is not always an easy thing to do if you have been there before. Once you have seen a dolphin pod drive and slaughter it stays with you and I was not looking forward to experiencing that again after seeing it three times on our last trip,” says teacher Celi Harper. Luckily, on this visit for the Gecko kids, each day they monitored was a blue cove day, meaning that no drive hunt successfully herded dolphins for either slaughter or capture. On the day they arrived a pod of Rissos dolphins had been slaughtered that morning and two were taken for a lifetime in captivity to perform tricks in the same way, as the dolphins here in the Phuket show have to do, daily. The day after they left, a pod of bottlenose was captured and fifteen were slaughtered and an additional five were taken into captivity for dolphin shows around the world. Three juveniles were driven back out to sea with little chance of survival without their mothers to nurse from and without adult pod members to help guide and look after them.

Alex at dolphin pens, Taiji.

The kids with red hands representing Taiji fisherman’s blood on their hands. Under the very watchful eye of Taiji police the kids rose at 5am every morning and drove to the harbour, counted the boats leaving and then made their way to the lookout point to monitor the boats. Often it was hours before the boats returned empty handed but a blue cove could not be called until every boat was back in the harbour. The kids visited the small sea pens where the captured dolphins were kept, starved and trained before being shipped off around the world. One would expect kids to be really excited when they saw dolphins close up for the first time but it was quite the opposite. “I think because we had done so much work at Gecko on captivity by having a full ‘Kids in Captivity’ day earlier in the year and then ‘Kids in Captivity Cage Challenge’ the week before we left, the kids really did empathise with the dolphins in the pens, their faces were full of sadness,” reflects Celi. Many of the dolphins had ‘rake’ marks all over them in particular the Rissos, their bodies were completely covered. Raking happens when dol-

phins in captivity are held in tiny areas, the stress of it results in aggression. Rake marks are caused when the teeth of dominant dolphins scrape the skin of the less aggressive ones. Unlike last time, the Gecko kids stopped off in Osaka for four days after leaving Taiji to present at international schools about what is happening in Taiji. It was alarming how many kids had swam with dolphins or attended dolphin shows but no one knew where these dolphins originated. It was very clear after presenting at only a couple of schools that education is the key to help stop this barbaric act that happens in Taiji and to stop dolphin and orca captivity globally. Gecko Community is committed to continue to work very closely with the Phuket Says No to Dolphin Shows campaign to help spread awareness and education in the community in both international and Thai schools, businesses, hotels and other places. It does not matter whether the dolphins who are performing daily at the Nemo Phuket Dolphins Show originated from Taiji or not, all dolphins were

Captured Risso dolphin covered in rake marks. once free and forcing them to breed in captivity does not make it okay. In addition, even if these dolphins allegedly were not from Taiji, the next lot of dolphins most likely will be, and will have to be replaced, as captive dolphins do not do well in captivity at all. From an educational viewpoint, keeping dolphins in captivity for human amusement is not education, it is just plain cruel. In fact, there is no scientific evidence to support that seeing cetaceans in captivity holds any educational value whatsoever. Gecko would like to thank the following for their support: Ric O’ Barry’s Dolphin Project, Phuket Says No to Dolphin Shows, Vista Del Mar, Aqua One, Yoga Republic, Pura Organic, John Gray’s Sea Canoe, Anthem Wake Park, Simba Sea Trips, Lemongrass, and Dewa Hotel.

H

ilton – the word and name hardly require an introduction. Here we’re talking about that world-renowned hospitality brand that you might usually only associate with royal, rich and famous holidaymakers. And so who would have thought that an everyday, ordinary Phuket resident like myself would come to cheer on this famous luxury hospitality brand to you, our humble readership (not counting those reading this from the flybridge of their superyacht as you savour a mouthful of bubbles and caviar). Indeed, after a recent night-and-day stay at Phuket’s premier Hilton property – the Hilton Arcadia Resort & Spa in Karon – I feel like I need to shout it out, that Hilton is in fact, exceptionally yet ordinar-

ily awesome! It’s as if I’d just discovered a new gem, one that had been hiding there along the shores of the island’s west coast in plain view this whole time. Last year I had the opportunity to stay with my family at the Hilton Doubletree at Surin Beach, which though was an enjoyable experience, still left something to be desired. After all, when one mentions Hilton in Phuket, most would think of the “bigger”, premier property at Karon Beach. Fact, the Hilton Arcadia Resort & Spa in Karon is Phuket’s largest hospitality property by area and number of rooms: Sitting on an expansive 180-rai (about 75 acres) plot of lush landscape gardens, the hotel boasts 665 rooms divided into seven categories: deluxe, deluxe plus, junior suite, Hilton suite, Hilton deluxe suite, Hilton superior deluxe suite and royal suite. We stayed in the Hilton superior deluxe suite, featuring a direct wide-open view to the west, overlooking a peaceful Karon Beach and the vast Andaman Sea. Logically split into several function zones, the 85-square-metre room provides more than enough leisurely living space for a family of three or four. On the south side of the room there’s a lounge area with a spacious walk-incloset and a refreshments zone with drinking glasses and a fully-stocked minibar. On the coffee table, trays of complimentary fruit, sandwiches, sweets and treats welcomed us as did the comfy white sofas that screamed out to me to come over and kick my feet up for a little telly. Though the suite has two 40-inch

LCD TVs – in the living room and bedroom – my wife had the right idea heading out to relax on the balcony: why bother with TV during daylight hours, when sites of the splendid ocean view could offer so much more peace of mind? The spacious bathroom – with access from the bedroom and corridor – was mostly up to expectation, clean and neatly sectioned into separate service stations (the toilet, stand-up shower and a bathtub); though one missing element kept it from being a “perfect bathroom”, which was the lack of the Thai sanitary spray gun, AKA bum gun, which, in my opinion is a must. The main bedroom’s comfy king-size bed was ever-so promising of a revivifying recharge (as you’d expect from

thephuketnews

Hilton) and it would certainly come to deliver on such a promise before the stay was through. Behind the bed was a private work desk that would allow me to get some work done (yes, work shadows me everywhere I go!) while my wife slept obliviously in Hilton heaven. It’s the kind of room that you anchor down and don’t ever really want to leave, and to emphasise we had to send away cleaning service inquiries multiple times. But the Hilton in Karon is not the type of resort you really want to devote your entire stay to the room. After all, there is so much to see and do on this expansive property. There’s a number of swimming pools to lounge around (their waterfall-waterslide is one of the favourites on the island); serene sauna, spa and massage villas, a putting green, jogging track, fully-equipped fitness centre, two squash courts, tennis courts, table tennis, kids zone... Oh, did I mention, a quiet stretch of Karon Beach is right there in front of the property. With a few hours to go before our scheduled seaside sunset dinner, I had to break a lazy spell that was rapidly overcoming me. So we stopped at the Caffé Cino, where I was recommended the

“Lychee Tower”; Comprising lychee ice cream, lychee syrup, Italian expresso and whole milk, this exotic premium drink gave me just the kick I needed, and with no added sugar or artificial sweeteners at that! The day rapidly winding down, we finally headed to the Ocean Beach Club for dinner. My son opted for a swim in their pool as I sipped a few brewskies in anticipation for what was looking to be a spectacular sunset meal. For starters we had a ceasar salad and pumpkin soup, followed by the main course, grilled salmon fillet and vegetables. Honestly you could have fed me anything at that point and it wouldn’t have changed the storybook mood as the fiery sun melted into the sea before our eyes. We ended the night with a scrumptious brownie cake topped with jelly and whipped cream. I was finally ready for that comfy bed knowing that another day of fattening ourselves with fine food awaited. The next day started at 8am with a light meal at Sail restaurant. Though I was tempted to stuff myself with a big breakfast, and it’s quite easy to do from their wide selection of western and eastern favourites, I had to pace myself, for we were scheduled for the Sunday Glitz brunch at noon too! Serving from noon till 3pm, Hilton’s Sunday Glitz is, in my opinion one of the best-value, premium brunches on the island at only B1,400++ for adults (over 12 years old) which includes selected free-flowing beverages for both adults and kids alike (bubbles cost a tad bit more I’m told). Kids five and under eat for free and all kid guests get free access to the pool and water slide, even if not staying at the hotel. Like the morning breakfast buf-

fet, the brunch spread is bountiful with all the usual Asian and western favourites – eggs, potatoes, bacon, onion rings, stir-fried, dim sum, salads, chicken, cold cuts, cheeses, curries, and of course; the the main selling point is the fresh seafood selection, which includes oysters, rock lobster, crab, sea bass, and prawns; there’s also ribeye steak, grilled chicken, sushi and sashami (salmon and tuna), pizza and burgers too. A special feature of the Sunday Glitz is the “pass around” service in which staff bring certain select dishes straight to your table and plate, including pizza and cakes. Go on and sit back to enjoy the live duo setting the mood with light and soothing pop tunes while your kids splash around in the pool. All good things must come to an end, and our stay at the Hilton was no

exception. Given the leisure of a late check-out, we dragged our feet in gathering our things before making the long march back to the lobby to check out, before heading back home, a hop and skip over the hill. Phuket really is a great place to live and holiday at the same time. Thanks for reminding me of this, Hilton!

Metzo’s magical Mediterranean flavours

Falafel, hummus, tabbouleh, mezze galore Dalia Hilmi editor1 @classactmedia.co.th

F

or anyone who isn’t aware of just how wonderful a mezze feast is or what it consists of, let me tell you: it comprises a number of simple yet tantalising small platters, including some of the most popular ones: fattoush (salad with vegetables and breadcrumbs), hummus (a creamy dip made from chickpeas), preserved vegetables, yogurt, pita bread and many others. The feast goes hand-inhand with a number of other tempting and appetising dishes, each packed full of flavours and representative of their country’s traditional foods. There are a few contenders for the best mezze in Phuket scattered around the island, more notably in Patong; however, the one that shines amongst the rest is the revamped Metzo’s Bistro and Bar at the five-star Outrigger Laguna

Phuket Beach Resort on the upper-west coast. I recently attended a fabulous dinner party to celebrate the relaunch of the restaurant and I count myself lucky to have experienced such delicious food that I thought wasn’t possible to find outside of the Middle East. Having been brought up to grow and love these types of food, given some of my heritage, you can only imagine how excited I was about attending the dinner. The new Metzo’s features an open kitchen, private dining spaces, and an all-new mezze and tapas counter. A full service cocktail bar leads out to a new garden terrace area through large concertina doors. The whole night was well organised and upon arrival, we were all greeted with a drinks reception, which allowed for some mingling before we were taken to our designated tables. At the tables we were welcomed with our very own personalised menu with each of our names printed on the top – a

nice touch. The menu was immaculately prepared by Metzo’s celebrated Lebanese chef, Mustapha Haj Omar, an expert and master chef on Mediterranean dishes from countries such as Morocco, Spain, Greece, Lebanon, Italy, Turkey and Egypt, to name a few. First up, the table was served with a platter of mezze dishes, including hummus, moutabal (purée of grilled eggplants), baba ghanouj (grilled eggplants), bruschetta, falafel, chicken wings, cheese rakakat (tasty crispy feta-cheese-stuffed pastries), as well as Spanish-style sautéed shrimps. Alongside these came refreshing tabbouleh salad, calamari, and more. A few of us tried hard not to over do it on the pita bread and hummus starter, but it was too delicious not to and I was already starting to feel full! Generous plates of meat then followed, including chicken shish taouk, lamb shank tajine, shish kebabs and lamb cutlets, all of which was enjoyed with rice or couscous. And who could forget the tantalising seafood selection that followed? Although I’m not one for the food of the sea, I have to admit it appeared to be a plate of dreams for anyone that was passionate about their seafood. Everything from grilled sea bass fillets and grilled tiger prawns to reef fish fillet and the heavenly tuna steak (according to my colleague it was the best tuna she’d ever had in Phuket). After all the mains were served, I slipped into a food coma and truthfully

Lebanese chef Mustapha Haj Omar.

believed I was done for the night, but as soon as we were presented with the tempting plates of dessert, I knew I was in trouble. Boy oh boy, were we in for a treat. The most inspiring and delightful dish was the baklava, a traditional treat in the Middle East. It was a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with honey. Chef Mustapha did an impeccable job at producing a faultless, home-cooked, yet traditional serving of the prized dessert. Overall the evening was truly fantastic. From the service, to the wines and craft beer selection, to the quality of fresh ingredients, to the level of professionalism that the whole team conveyed, the dinner party was a fabulous way to celebrate the relaunch of Metzo’s. For anyone who enjoys these types of dishes and cooking, be sure to check it out, you’ll be in for a great night and will be spoilt for choice. For reservations, email metzos@outrigger.co.th. PHUKET UN-UNITED Key players leave as off-season uncertainty looms FUTSAL Steven Layne editor@classactmedia.co.th

T

Keerati Tosasut (left) and Puchong Chaoroensrihassana are two of the players considering offers from other clubs.

Big changes will be made to the Phuket Utd team, who last played on November 11 in the FA Cup round-of-16.

@thephuketnews

he future of the island’s professional five-a-side squad, Phuket United is up in the air as many of its key players have started considering offers from other clubs in the wake of uncertainty ahead of nex t season. After concluding their third season in the elite futsal league in September in 5 th place out of 14 teams, some Phuket United players were told by club management that the team is being sold. Doubts were confirmed when Chalermpong “Sam” Saengdee stepped down as Head Coach. Asked to elaborate, Coach Sam and club owner Suppachoke La-ongphet told The Phuket News that it was too early to say anything. owever, according to a source inside the club, Suppachoke, who is also owner of The Senses Resort in Patong,

has reportedly been discussing the sale of the team rights to another local business group. “The [ potential] new owners don’t want details to be announced yet, but the deal would ensure that Phuket [ United] would continue to play in the [ Futsal] Thailand Premier League nex t season,” the source said. “The new owner would need to incorporate the team as a juristic entity. Up to this point, the club has been treated as a provincial asset,” the source added. Meanwhile, lacking clarity, contracts and salaries in the off-season, many of the team’s key players have already started looking at other clubs to join. In the mean time

we don’t get to train or get a salary, whereas some other teams can offer us more stability in the off season ,” Ma concluded. ther confirmed outgoing players are as follows: Team captain Anuwat Phanopha has signed with Chonburi; National squad goalkeeper Chaleamsri Pungsri has joined Surat Thani; Thanakorn Penpakul signed with Bangkok FC and Patchaya Srimanta with Nonthaburi. he head of the Spanish league, Javier Tebas, believes tomorrow’s (Nov 21) blockbuster clash between Real Madrid and Barcelona can help lead La Liga’s economic fightback against the English Premier League’s billion-dollar television contracts. The financial gap between the English top-flight and the rest of Europe soared after the Premier League secured a record a £5.1 billion three-year deal for domestic television rights alone in February. However, Tebas, who has helped oversee a drastic turnaround in Spanish football’s debt-laden finances, is hopeful the appeal of broadcasting the world’s best players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi can keep La Liga on the Premier League’s coattails. “El Clasico is the jewel in the crown of La Liga, but bearing in mind it is La Liga that gives it its value,” Tebas said in a recent interview. “It is a competitive game, with points at stake. If it were just a friendly, it wouldn’t be the same.” That the game will kick-

off at 6:pm local time (0:15am Thai time) is a sign of changing times in La Liga. I n a n at tempt to put the brakes on the Premier League’s dominance of the lucrative Asian market, Madrid and Barcelona now regularly kick-off at the same time as their English counterparts. A worldwide television audience of at least 500 million is expected to watch Messi team up with Neymar and Luis Suarez to take on Ronaldo’s Madrid, who can also count on stars like Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez. The arms race for star names between the two clubs has led to criticism of La Liga

for being too uncompetitive. Indeed, only once in the past 11 years have they failed to win the title. A new law has attempted to address that competitive imbalance by enforcing the league to negotiate its television rights collectively rather than on an individual basis, which previously saw the big two earn up to 14 times more than the smallest clubs. However, Tebas insists even under a more balanced system, Madrid and Barca haven’t lost out as the collective deals struck for both national and international rights have seen television revenue rise from 800 million

euros a season to 1.2 billion. Moreover, with a threeyear deal for domestic rights under tender at the moment, Tebas is hopeful that by next season revenue could rise to as much as 1.5 billion euros. “I think we have known and the government have accepted it wouldn”t be so equally split as in the English or German league. We need to grow without cutting out Real Madrid and Barcelona. The better they go and the more stars they have, the better the domestic and international rights will go. “Already this year because we have done the international tender, we have grown from

800 million to 1.2 billion euros. “Now we are doing the national tender and hope to get to 1.5 billion. It is not the Premier League because we have far to go in working on our brand, but we are at a much superior level than the Italian, German or French leagues and within a billion of the Premier League.” The extra revenue has significantly helped in areas such as reducing Spanish clubs’ enormous tax debts by over 50 per cent, from 650 million to 317 million in the past two years. Yet, there is a looming threat to La Liga’s cash cow

in the form of the Catalan independence drive, which could see Barcelona cut adrift from Spain. Tebas has repeatedly stated he doesn’t believe Catalonia’s succession from Spain would be legal, and refused to offer an olive branch for Barca to remain in the league in the case that independence did come about. “Without doubt it wouldn’t be the same, but it would be the willingness of the clubs and Spanish law that would decide. “We need to remember that if separation came about, which it won’t, it would be a very painful act.”
