lans to build a bridge costing B1.2 billion linking Phuket with Koh Maphrao, also just called “Coconut Island”, are gaining momentum with Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong expected to inspect the island today (Dec 22) to assess whether or not to pledge his support for the project. The proposed bridge is to span about one kilometre from Laem Hin, popular for its seafood restaurants

served by the local fishing community on Phuket’s east coast, to the pier at Baan Koh Maphrao on the island. The move to push ahead with a fresh proposal to build the bridge, which has failed to gain approval in several previous attempts in the years past, comes from strong support from the villagers on the island itself, reports Teeradech Kumleang, Deputy Chief of the Phuket office Department of Rural Roads (DRR), which under the Ministry of Transport oversees the national Bureau of Bridge Construction.

“I arrived in Phuket about six months ago and I received complaints from villagers on the island saying they deeply wanted a bridge to Phuket,” Mr Teeradech explained. “They even sent a petition of about 100 signatures asking for a bridge, so I dispatched a team to survey the residents on the island to better gauge public opinion on whether or not a majority actually wanted it,” he added. The response was strong. “We definitely support having a bridge. We want it,” said Sangsan

Most of the people here, there are about 1,000 people living on the island, supported having a bridge connecting us to Phuket,” he said. “We want change on Koh Maphrao,” Imam Sangsan noted. “Currently, we have to travel by boat between the islands. The Governor’s inspection scheduled for today follows Mr Teeradech presenting a formal proposal to Gov Norraphat at Provincial Hall just last week. “I would like Phuket Governor Norraphat to support this project,” Mr Teeradech told The Phuket News. “If the Governor agrees, then next this project will be handed to the Tourism Strategy staff at Provincial Hall. “We will also invite other officials, such as from the Phuket Marine Office, the Department of Marine and

We have to bring all our ideas together. “Also, if we get the Governor’s approval, we can then apply for the first part of the budget required to conduct the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and even start the process to request the construction budget from the DRR in Bangkok.”

In his proposal to Gov Norraphat last week, Mr Teeradech confirmed that his office would prefer to build a suspension bridge. He also estimated such a bridge to cost about B1.2 billion. “We have no idea yet how many lanes the bridge will have or other details. At this stage we are still looking at ideas,” Mr Teeradech explained.

“However, a suspension bridge is the suitable choice. It would have less effect on the environment and would be attractive. After the EIA has been done, we will know what the bridge design will look like,” he said. However, Mr Teeradech added, “This project has a long way to go. We must understand that it is sensitive to environmental NGOs here and we have yet to conduct the EIA, of which a very important part is explaining to people what the bridge will involve,” he said. Mr Teeradech admitted the project will very likely affect mangroves in the area – and hence by law will need express permission from the Cabinet before it can proceed. Alcohol promotion blitz to hit Phuket nightlife

The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

T

he Phuket Provincial Health Office (PPHO) has warned that stricter enforcement of the provisions regulating the promotion of alcohol will hit the island next week, ahead of the New Year celebrations. The crackdown will specifically target beer gardens, restaurants and other public venues, confirmed Dr Prapa Nakara, who as Director of the PPHO’s Non-communicable Diseases division directly heads the enforcement of alcohol-related regulations on the island. “We will announce the provisions regarding the promotion of alcohol in a campaign from Dec 24-29,” Dr Prapa told The Phuket News. “Specifically, Phuket is a tourism area and we must remind venue operators [of the provisions] by official letter before the New Year celebrations,” she said. “Last month we found some restaurants [whose operators] admitted to breaking

The “Bangkok action” refers to Alcohol Control Board Director Nipon Chinanonwait taking legal action against the organisers of popular open-air beer gardens at CentralWorld

Plaza for violating Section 32 of the Alcohol Beverage Control Act B.E. 2551 (2008), which bans any attempts to “encourage” drinking. If found guilty, violators face up to one year in jail or a fine of up to B500,000 – or both. Mr Nipon last week also threatened to crack down on similar events nationwide on the grounds that they entice the public to drink. “Our campaign on alcoholpromotion laws includes the use of beer promotion pretties [attractive hostesses],

the publishing of photos of alcohol-related promotion events or other illegal activities,” Dr Prapa said. “Also, open-air beer gardens are against the law, and it is illegal to encourage people to drink alcohol by advertising in publications, on billboards or elsewhere that is not permitted,” she added. “We will consider each instance case by case. If the organiser’s purpose is just to encourage drinking, they will be charged under Section 32 of the law,” Dr Prapa said.

THE PHUKET GOVERNOR has ordered police to strictly enforce the law against drunk drivers and motorcyclists not wearing helmets during the upcoming New Year “Seven Days of Danger” road safety campaign, this year to be held from Dec 28 to Jan 3. Governor Norraphat Plodthong has also ordered officials to specifically keep an eye out for unlicensed drivers and to conduct vehicle checks, presumably for safety and illegalities, and to ensure motorists obey traffic rules. The mandate was handed down at a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall on Monday (Dec 18), attended by Vice Governor Snith Sriwihok and the heads of the main government offices on the

island, and police. The order to target drunk drivers and specifically target motorcyclists not wearing helmets in Phuket comes as police in Bangkok warn that officers in the capital will seize motorbikes of helmetless riders until it is proved that the rider has one. This year the New Year Seven Days campaign will be conducted under the theme “Khab Rod Mee Namjai Raksa Winai Jarajorn” (“Drive carefully, follow traffic rules”). “Many tourists visit Phuket tourist destinations during the New Year long holiday, such as beaches and islands. Many more accidents happen than in normal periods,” Gov Norraphat reminded officials. The Phuket News

Beach trash and water quality irk tourists TRASH AND WATER QUALITY of Phuket’s beaches are considered badly managed, according to the results of a management research survey conducted by the Prince of Songkla University (PSU) and displayed at their Phuket Campus last week. “We obtained feedback from 1,624 participants on Phuket’s beaches including tourists, village headmen, students and private businesses in the area. The data was collected between Oct 2016 and Sept 2017,” said Dr Chantinee Boonchai, who led the public announcement at the university on Dec 14.

@thephuketnews

Dr Chantinee, who is a lecturer at PSU and also a member of Andaman Environment and Natural Disaster Research Centre (Aned), added, “The main purpose of this research is to obtain information as the foundation strives to support the beach management and give officials in Phuket direction. “The research is also for the community to unite and take action to preserve the environment that surrounds their lives,” she added. “According to the survey, foreign tourists’ priority is to see a ‘natural’ beach without buildings. Their second priority is they want

to see beaches that are clean without trash,” said Dr Chantinee. “They also voted in agreement that with better beach management, as according to the survey, trash and water quality are not considered well managed. This is the result of asking 400 foreign tourists and 400 Thai tourists.” Also in response to a survey of hundreds of foreign and Thai tourists, foreign tourists gave Patong, Kata and Karon beaches as their top choices, while Thai tourists preferred to visit Kata and Nai Yang beaches. The event was also used to promote the “Smart Beach Project”,

though which community groups could mark which beach areas they would help clean and what types of cleanups the groups would be carrying out. “We also need supporters including students, expats or anyone to help hold activities to clean up trash, foam and polluting materials,” Dr Chantinee said. People can register and report beach pollution through the Smart Beach Project website in Thai and English at SmartBeachPhuket.com. “All data collected will be handed over to Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong in the coming week for

Luckily, no people were injured and now traffic is flowing through the area as usual,” the officer noted. The power supply to the area was also quickly restored, he added. Strong winds are forecast to continue along the Andaman coast as tropical storm Kaitak continues to move across the top of Borneo to the South China Sea, warned the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), noted in a weather advisory issued late Tuesday afternoon.

Kaitak is whipping up winds up to 65km/h while continuing its southward path. “It will move to the South China Sea on 21 December. This storm is expected to downgrade to tropical depression and active low pressure respectively,” the TMD noted. “During 22-24 December, tropical storm KAITAK is likely to lose strength while passing Malaysia and the lower South of Thailand, still affecting an increase of rainfall volume with torrential downpour. With rain accumulation, it may cause flash flood in the lower South,” the advisory cautioned.

Is there something to hide?

t’s been three years since Phuket first introduced its controversial beach management rules. These rules saw vendors restricted to “special zones” covering just 10% of the total beach area. At some beaches the rules still stand, some with a few modifications. At some they have been scrapped completely for various reasons, abuse of power by vendors being one. But three years down the line it is still a topic of debate. The most recent example was at Surin Beach, where vendors had slowly made their way back to the beaches despite it being classed a “virgin beach” where no vendors were to be allowed. But let’s step back to 2014 when the issue of beach management first came to the surface, a plan was announced by then-Governor Nisit Jansomwong under orders from the NCPO.

The whole idea of introducing the rules was to bring some kind of law and order to what had, in effect, become a situation where private vendors “owned” and managed public areas. But who would be affected by these new rules more than anybody else? The very people that bring so much to not only the island’s, but also to the whole country’s economy – tourists. Back in mid-2014 it was announced that a major part of deciding the fate of beach vendors would come down to a three-month survey conducted by the Prince of Songkhla University (PSU) Phuket campus, which would question tourists visiting Phuket’s Beaches. However, the rules and regulations were introduced and enforced well before of any details of such a study were revealed.

In June 2015 the whole issue was still mired in controversy and the research team at PSU said they would be presenting its findings to the governor in July that year. But now it’s December 2017 and the results of that survey have never been revealed. Last Friday (Dec 14) PSU finally revealed the results of a beach management research survey. But it came as some surprise to The Phuket News when we learned that it was a completely different survey conducted between Oct 2016 and Sept 2017, not the survey originally conducted in 2015. At the time it was pretty clear what “tourists” thought of the idea to introduce the beach management rules – they didn’t want them. So why were the results of the original survey never revealed? Is there something in that report that officials are trying to hide?

HAVE YOUR SAY Laws irrelevant

Re: Phuket Poll: Should tourists driver’s licences be recognised as legal? When people (not only tourists!) violate traffic laws and are given a fine, yes, that is right. But when police let the motorist drive on without helmet or without driving licence after the fine is paid, then police violate the traffic laws by letting a motorist without a driving licence drive on and become a possibly life threatening danger towards other road users. But just call this laziness in police law enforcement, or not being able to give this a thought. Kurt In reality, the laws don’t matter, because Thailand does not have an actual law enforcement body… just a collection of uneducated and poorly trained thieves that want nothing more than to take money from tourists… which is all they do. If foreign licenses were recognised and tourists were wearing helmets, then the police would move on to some other BS infraction used to steal money from tourists. Ben Pendejo

Re: Touting elephants okay, says Phuket wildlife official This is horrible. It’s not the actual riding that is the cruelty. The task force, made up of anti-drug police, local police, and immigration police, turned up at a premises owned by Luke Joshua Cook, 34, and his Thai wife at 2am on Monday and found it to be operating illegally. Cook and his wife, Kanyarat Wechapitak, 40, were arrested at Suvarnabhumi airport on Dec 10 in connection with the discovery of crystal meth (ya ice) which was swept ashore in June 2015. According to police, their business, which houses a hotel, restaurant and bar, was operating without proper licences and its foreign employees did not have work permits. The manager, the employees without work permits and the one who tested positive for drug use were taken to Muang Pattaya Police Station for further questioning. Two years ago, four sacks containing 50.45 kilograms of ya ice were found on Mae Ramphueng Beach of tambon Ban Phe in Muang district of Rayong. The investigation

linked the drug to Cook and it was believed the bags were thrown into the sea from the couple’s yacht as they tried to smuggle the drugs into the country. The probe also linked Cook to the late Way ne Schneider, 37, an Australian Hells Angels motorcycle gang member who was murdered. His body was found buried in Chonburi’s Sattahip district in November 2015. Mr Schneider was sus-

pected of selling Cook 500kg of ya ice in early 2015, with a plan to store it in Thailand then later smuggle it into Australia. Meanwhile, the government has handed over B38 million to the Cambodian government as part of a joint cooperation to fight drugs. The fund is earmarked for the construction of a drug rehabilitation and career training centre in Preah Sihanouk province.

THE ANTI-MONEY LAUNdering Office (Amlo) last Thursday (Dec 14) placed a 90-day freeze on B4.25-billion of zero-dollar tour operator OA Transport executives’ assets, on suspicion of tax evasion. Acting Amlo secretarygeneral Romsit Weeriyasan said the decision followed a report from the Revenue Department that Thongchai Rojrungrangsee and others connected to companies within the OA Transport umbrella may have filed false financial reports from 2011 to 2016. The estimated evaded tax was B7.79bn.

He said the suspected offences violated revenue and money-laundering laws and Amlo resolved to freeze 125 assets worth B4.25bn from Mr Thongchai and others for 90 days pending legal action. Mr Thongchai was among 13 parties earlier charged with running illegal zero-dollar tour services in which unusually cheap packages were sold to tourists who were then led to buy overpriced products and services from selected shops. ‘Icebox killer’ gets 43 years Irishman sentenced for charges including attempted murder BANGKOK Bangkok Post

A

Bangkok court has sentenced an Irish man to 43 years and 10 months in jail for attempting to kill a policeman, forging passports and moving the dismembered body of an American businessman found in a freezer in a high-profile case last year. The charges against two Americans in the same case were dismissed. However, the court ordered them detained pending an appeal. Peter Colter, 64, whose other names are William Johnson and Herbert Craig Lafon, was charged with attempting to kill a policeman, moving a body, having passports and stamps, having drugs, guns and bullets, and violating immigration laws. Police arrested Lafon/ Colter on Sept 23 last year in a shophouse on Sukhumvit Rd after a US suspect implicated him in supplying a forged passport. During the arrest, Colter

Photo: Bangkok Post / file pulled a gun and shot the arresting officer during the raid. He was quickly subdued in a violent struggle. Two other Americans, Aaron Gabel, 34, and James Eger, 67, were also charged as they were the ones who signed the contract to rent the shophouse. Police found seven items of guns and bullets in the

shophouse, as well as 4.5 grams of crystal meth (ya ice), a bag of marijuana, a bottle of ketamine and 10 forged passports. The three men were also charged with destroying the body of Charles Dittle, an American businessman, by cutting up the body and storing the parts in a freezer at a house on Ekamai Soi 2.

They later moved the parts to the shophouse on Sukhumvit Soi 56. The incidents took place between October 2008 and January 2016, according to evidence given at Colter’s trial. When police searched the shophouse on Sept 23, 2016, Colter fired three shots at Mst Sgt Kanjanapong Chedej, making the arrest,

and then fought physically, injuring two policemen. The policeman was treated and survived. After the arrest, police searched the apartment and found four body parts in the freezer on the first floor. The court praised the testimony of witnesses – a maid, the freezer vendor and a man hired to move

it – that Colter was the one who owned the freezer and ordered it moved with full knowledge of what was in it. T he cou r t se nt e nce d Colter to life in prison for attempting to kill a policeman. He also got two years for moving the body, having forged passports for sale (four years), having crystal meth for sale (seven years and a fine of B450,000), having marijuana for sale (three months), having ketamine (one year and six months) and possession of guns and ammunition (one year). Since his testimony was partially useful, the penalty was cut by a third to a total of 43 years and 10 months and a fine of B300,000. Under Thai law, he will actually serve a maximum of 20 years. As for Gabel and Eger, the court found the evidence against them was not enough to convict, as it did not show they had bought the freezer or were involved in moving the body. But the court ordered them detained pending a state appeal.

Photo: AFP I’ll get,” said Makita, one of a growing number of adult consumers of capsule toys, known as “gachagacha” or “gachapon” in Japanese after the cranking sound. Store manager Yo Kono says the customer base has changed in the 16 years the shop has been open. “At the beginning, visitors were mainly male anime fans... but recently the number of cus-

tomers is growing with more female visitors and foreign tourists,” Kono said. Capsule toys have been around for more than 40 years but the craze really took off in 2012 when Tokyo-based manufacturer Kitan Club launched its “Koppu no Fuchico” (“Fuchico at the edge of a glass”) product. This figurine of a woman wearing a typical office worker’s clothes, whose arms or legs

were designed to hang over the edge of a glass, became an instant hit with adults. “We never thought of targeting children. Their numbers are dwindling and adults have more money,” said spokesman Seita Shiki. Shiki chalks up the Fuchico capsule’s success to the fact it is “cheap and Instagram-worthy”. Fans have been sharing photos of Fuchico on social

media, which helped boost its popularity without the company even needing to advertise, he boasted. “Fuchico was launched just as social media started to be used widely. It fitted with the times.” Kitan Club, which makes various kinds of capsule toys, saw its sales grow from 800 million yen (B231.83mn) to 1.2 billion yen (B347.09mn) after the launch of the Fuchico series. The capsule toy became so popular that the company was asked to create a pop-up shop at the cult Paris concept store Colette and to hold an exhibition in Taiwan. Now many manufacturers are making capsule toys to appeal to adult consumers, helping to expand the market to around 100 new items each month. Manufacturer Bandai, which occupies around 70% of the capsule toy market, said the products sell well because they are expertly made and they come in huge varieties. When Bandai began making capsule toys exactly 40

years ago in 1977, the majority of them were cheap, sold mostly at 20 yen (B4.78), and were of poor quality, general manager Toshikazu Saita said. “A wide variety of quality products are available at only 200 or 300 yen (B57.85 or B86.77). I think that’s a reason why they’re so popular now,” said Saita. He said the quality of the products was down to specialists who “hand-carve prototypes by paying attention to angles and colours”. “The attention to detail is very Japanese,” he said. But to keep costs down, the actual toys are manufactured in China using the Japanese design as a prototype. Shiki of Kitan Club agreed that attention to detail was what set Japanese capsule toys apart. “For example, Fuchico’s knees and elbows are slightly sprayed with red paint to make them look real,” he explained. “This adds one extra step but we feel we have to do this” even if it adds to the cost, he added. Ringing in the changes Britain’s iconic red phone boxes being saved from death row UNITED KINGDOM Martine Pauwels

F

acing extinction due to ubiquitous mobile phones, Britain’s classic red telephone boxes are being saved from death row by ingenious conversions into all sorts of new uses. “It smells nice,” a passerby said while sniffing the waft of hot stew steaming out of one phone box in the heart of London. Every day, dozens of office workers come down to Bloomsbury Square to get their lunch at a phone box that has been converted to hold a tiny refrigerator and shelves to put the dishes on. The generous salads – the house speciality – go down particularly well with customers who like to sit in the square’s gardens to enjoy their lunch. It is one of thousands of phone boxes which are enjoying a new lease of life. Often abandoned, vandalised or reeking of urine, some have been transformed

Fouad Choaibi working inside a red telephone box from which he runs a smartphone repair shop on Southhampton Row, in central London. Photo: AFP into libraries, art galleries and information hubs; others into cafes, hat shops or even heart defibrillator points. Since their numbers peaked at 92,000 across Britain in 2002, phone boxes have been in rapid decline. There are now 42,000 left, of which 7,000 are the classic red booths loved by tourists. British telecoms giant BT plans to remove 20,000 more

by 2022. It says most of its phone booths lose money, while maintaining them costs £5 million (B219.92mn) a year. Overall, 33,000 calls are made daily from phone boxes, a drop of 90% in 10 years. The best-known model is the K6, in pillar box red with a crown embossed on its curved roof. It was the first to be installed as a standard

around the country. It was designed by the British architect Giles Gilbert Scott for the silver jubilee of King George V in 1935, marking 25 years of his reign. “We are looking for new alternatives to payphones,” Mark Johnson, BT’s head of payphone operations, said. Several hundred phone boxes now house cash machines, while others are being turned

into free and ultrafast Wi-Fi booths paid for by advertising BT is also considering whether they could be turned into power points for electric vehicles. Some are restored and sold via an authorised reseller, with prices starting at £2,750 (B120,958), excluding value added tax. Others are sold for a pound to local communities or associations wanting to give them a new lease of life, part of BT’s Adopt a Kiosk scheme which has already kept 5,000 of them standing. “The whole idea of this is keep the heritage of the UK in place,” Johnson said. The Red Kiosk Company, which donates a portion of its profits to charity, is one of the beneficiaries. It has already bought 124 redundant phone boxes, which it rents out for £360 (B15,834) a month. It hopes to acquire 500 more over the next three years. “You’re saving a historic structure, you’re creating employment and you’re regenerating an area,” founder Edward

Ottewell said. Outside the costs of refitting them, which can be up to £6,000 (B263,908), local authority authorisation can be difficult to obtain, Ottewell said. The modest rental costs allows young entrepreneurs to get started, particularly in London, where commercial rents can be prohibitively high. “It was the only place where we could afford the rent, because it’s only a square metre!” said Ben Spier, who founded the salad bar in London’s Bloomsbury Square. Red Kiosk also counts Lovefone, a mobile phone repair business, among its customers. “A passer-by asked me, Don’t you feel claustrophobic?” Fouad Choaibi said, sitting in his kiosk equipped with a small table, storage for spare parts and a tiny heater. “No. If it was bigger, you would have more distractions,” Choaibi said. “I just go outside to stretch my legs. I just go outside and I’m out of the office.” AFP

BEACHSIDE SEAFOOD

Dining ‘al fresco’ at Amari’s Rim Talay is the ultimate way to savour some fresh shellfish The expansive view of Patong Bay from Amari’s Rim Talay. Inset: The seafood buffet is packed with fresh shellfish and much more. Baz Daniel

S

itting within earshot of the susurrating waves in the elegant sala of the Amari Phuket’s Rim Talay restaurant overlooking the dancing lights across Patong Bay, I had a startling insight. I realised that this was exactly the situation in which we were supposed to enjoy dining on seafood – within the sight, smell and sound of the very waters that had given us the healthful bounty we were digesting. Zoologist Desmond Morris points out in his documentary The Human Zoo that our human biology evolved over huge tracts of time and at a very slow rate. Meanwhile, human industrialisation and urbanisation have overtaken our species in the mere blink of the cosmological eye, while the glacial pace of our biological evolution is unable to keep up with these startling developments, and has left us saddled with a brain and

@thephuketnews

body which are still primarily adapted to living a hunter-gatherer existence. So, in truth, we were quite clearly designed by Mother Nature to consume seafood exactly where we caught it, literally “rim talay”, which of course is the Thai expression for “by the beach.” Sitting in the elegant beachside sala of Rim Talay enjoying a super-fresh selection of delectable seafood at their regular seafood buffet supper, I could literally feel the pleasure that the sounds, sights and tangy ozone and salt spray aromas brought to enhance my savouring of this primal experience. My brain and physiology seemed to be singing harmoniously telling me that this is how I had been deigned to consume the glorious abundance of fish, sashimi and sushi, shellfish, crustaceans and squid that the sea offered up, complemented by fresh, crunchy, healthy salad, with just a smidgen of naughty indulgence from the fruit and dessert selection at meal’s end. Not that I totally wanted to abandon

the advantages of modernity and globalism as I plunged into the delights of the extensive imported drinks menu! Here, other hunter-gatherers, and indeed highly-skilled horticulturists, of our human tribe had worked tirelessly in far-flung regions of our planet such as the Marlborough area on the South Island of New Zealand and the Upper Mosel Valley to bring us the fabulous crispy zest with which we paired our seafood bounty. And to provide a visual backdrop to our meal’s delights, this was surely the very best aspect from which to embrace the heady mania of Patong, even, as if on cue, a huge, illuminated cruise-liner slid across the sunset waters and disappeared over the horizon. From our chilled vantage point within the blissful embrace of Rim Talay, I could only describe Patong’s appearance as “calming, romantic and inviting”… surely words that are not normally associated with the cauldrons of hedonistic excess for which this corner of Phuket has gained

global notoriety. Rim Talay is a casual yet elegant restaurant refreshed by sea breezes and looking across the glittering waters of Patong Bay, providing both a sanctuary and a playground for families and romantic couples alike. The charming and helpful staff serve a different international buffet selection, plus à la carte menu of fine continental cuisine, each evening of the week, while the adjacent poolside bar is the perfect place to wind down with a cold drink. Let your inner hunter-gatherer rejoice! Rim Talay’s Christmas Day Starlit Buffet Extravaganza is priced at B2,800++ per person and B1,400++ for kids under 12. Their New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner is B5,500++ per person and B2,750++ for kids under 12. So if you are looking for the perfect place to celebrate the festive season, head to Amari and dine in the open-air charm of Rim Talay. For more information visit: amari.com

A meal at Kantok plunges you into the culture of Thailand and expand your culinary horizons. The menu of Kantok restaurant has been lovingly curated by a chef with a deep knowledge of Thai cuisine. Kan-

tok is the name for the handmade low rattan tables used in Northern Thai households, but the restaurant certainly doesn’t limit itself to Northern Thai cuisine – there are also many classic Phuket-style dishes on offer. To name just a few: Wagyu Beef Massaman Curry, Rice Noodles with Crab Curry (Mee Hoon Gaeng Poo), Phuket Spring Rolls (Pho Pia Phuket), Sour and Spicy Seafood Soup, Shrimp Paste (Nam Prik Goong Sieb) and Smoked Salmon Salad. Wagyu Beef Massaman is an intensely flavoured, rich and spicy Thai curry which takes its flavour from a pungent paste of herbs and spices. The paste is a mixture of several types of spices brought to the region by Muslim traders and gained widespread popularity across the Malay Peninsula with the spread of Islam. Thai Muslims often

But as it was adapted to Thai tastes it has become a more full-flavoured blend of three tastes including sour, salty, and sweet. The Wagyu Beef Mussaman at Kantok Restaurant uses curry paste mixed with ground coriander seeds, cumin powder, ground chili, cayenne pepper and curry powder stir-fried with oil and mixed with fried shallots instead of onions for its unique taste and smell. The superb Australian Wagyu Beef is simmered in the rich sauce until it is melt-in-the-mouth soft and ready to serve. Kantok’s Fried Fish Balls are a creation of the chef, who wanted to offer these tender fried fish balls but with a different and more subtle flavour. The recipe uses Pangasius fish fillets mixed with minced shrimp and finely sliced lemongrass and is a signature dish that showcased the restaurant’s unique approach to both the aroma and the flavour of its dishes. The rich and spicy yellow curry is a delicate blend of many spices and perfectly complements the intense flavour of fresh crab meat, both of which are mellowed by the rice noodles as well as a side dish of various local vegetables. Phuket Spring Rolls (Pho Pia Phuket) are another signature dish and Kantok prides itself it unique and delicious dipping sauce. The sauce’s main ingredient is tamarind juice which is mixed with a special secret formula of herbs and spices that give it its appetising aroma and unique flavour. The sauce is used to dip fresh spring rolls filled with crab meat, pork sausage and yam beans, giving you a true taste of Phuket cuisine. England just ‘not good enough’ say the press CRICKET

oe Root’s England team are simply not good enough to beat Australia in their own backyard and lack fast bowlers who can scare the opposition. That’s the harsh verdict from the British press after the tourists slumped to a 3-0 Ashes deficit following a painful innings defeat in Perth, leaving them staring at a 5-0 whitewash for the third time in four series Down Under. Australia have outbatted and outbowled their visitors in all three Tests and on Monday (Dec 18) regained the famous Ashes urn with two games of the five-match series left to play. “Many reviews could be conducted into the state of English cricket and the lack of incentive for young outright fast bowlers, the state of pitches – nothing like the WACA in Perth – and the questionable coaching methods,” wrote Daily Telegraph cricket correspondent Scyld Berry. “But the fundamental fact is that Root’s squad does not contain enough good players to beat Australia here. “For an Ashes series in England, half of Root’s team would be in contention for a place in a composite XI,” he added. “In Australia, on the basis of the first three Tests,

only Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow would get into a composite XI.” Former England batsmen Geoffrey Boycott said not even the missing Ben Stokes – banned from international duties over an alleged fracas outside an English nightclub – would have made the difference. “Nothing we have in English cricket would have changed the result. I can’t think of any player at home who could have made so much difference,” he was quoted as saying on the BBC website. “Ben Stokes would have helped the batting and I would be surprised if he didn’t score runs at some point over here because he’s a good player but we’ve been outplayed.” Former England captain and Times chief cricket correspondent Michael Atherton

said England’s bowlers have paled beside their Australian counterparts. “While England have relied on two ageing bowlers who spearheaded their last whitewash here – (James) Anderson has done himself justice, (Stuart) Broad has not – Australia have revamped their pace attack completely, through the compelling combination of Josh Hazlewood, five wickets to the good in the second innings, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc – all younger, hungry, vital and fast,” he said. Anderson has taken 12 wickets in the series so far but his fellow frontline partner Broad has managed just five scalps. By contrast, Australia’s top four bowlers – Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins plus off-spinner Nathan Lyon

– have taken 59 wickets between them. Former Ashes-winning fast bowler John Snow said England are having trouble unearthing fast bowlers to shake up opposition batsmen. “Fast bowlers don’t grow on trees,” the 76-year-old told the Press Association. “The wickets used to be better, they’ve got slower here in England for years and years. They’ve been messed about by directives rather than just focusing on producing good, true wickets. “Fast bowling is about physical ability, physique, the mentality, the coordination. But you’ve got to want to learn how to bowl quick and for it all to slot into place. “You’ve got to learn how to do it yourself, the coaches don’t bowl the damn thing, the bowler has to bowl it.”

LEADING SYDNEY TO Hobart yacht race contender Wild Oats XI has been struck by lightning in a big blow to its chances ahead of the gruelling bluewater classic, it was revealed Wednesday (Dec 20). The supermaxi, an eighttime winner which was forced to retire from last year’s race over a hydraulics issue, was in Sydney when a bolt of lightning hit the top of its 45-metre high carbon fibre mast. Race organisers said a large number of electronic instruments were destroyed, all of which are vital if it is to maintain maximum speed and stay on course. The boat was set to be put through its paces Wednesday to see if any of the carbon fibre rigging was damaged. “It’s a major blow for us on the eve of the big race,” said Wild Oats owner Sandy Oatley. “However, I’m sure our great team will have every-

thing ready for the start on Boxing Day. There is no stopping them.” Another line honours favourite, Comanche, was docked alongside Wild Oats when the storm struck last Sunday (Dec 17), but escaped any damage. The f leet for the 73rd edition of the often brutal 628-nautical mile race across the Tasman Sea will leave Sydney on Tuesday (Dec 26). Australian supermaxi Perpetual Loyal, a long-time rival to Wild Oats, smashed the record last year, arriving at Hobart’s Constitution Dock in one day 13hr 31min 20sec. In a gesture to ensure Wild Oats can start, fellow supermaxi Black Jack has offered some of its own equipment from its warehouse in Brisbane. “That’s the spirit that exists in this level of ocean racing,” said Oatley. “We might be arch rivals on the race course, but we’re all supportive of each other when necessary.” AFP

T

he new season of the Patong Pool League (PPL), now sponsored by Thailand Pool Tables, got underway last Thursday (Dec 14) with two of last season’s dominating teams – Wet Dreams and Natalie Bar – still taking part. This season the organisers of the league have what they say are three different kinds of teams taking part. Firstly, the “Favourites” which includes Wet Dreams, Natalie and Hole in One bar. Secondly the “Solid and Experienced” teams which includes Wombat, Ting Tong and Caddy Shack bar. And last, but by no means least, what the organisers call the “Good Spirit” which are Simon & Oil, Martin Swiss, Red Light and Happy End bar. The organisers say the charm of the PPL is that everybody can beat everybody, with a Leicester City type of scenario not being out of the question.

The teams from Wet Dreams and Happy End Bar. In last Thursday’s action, Simon & Oil went down 4-7 against Red Light. Unlike last year, Red Light’s first time in the league, they got off to a winning start. In the game between Wet Dreams vs Happy End, which Happy End ended up winning 5-6, it was a fantastic end to the match. With just the black ball on the table, Robert from Happy End kept his nerve and gave a hard fought victory to the underdogs. Elsewhere, Natalie Bar beat Martin Swiss 6-5, another match that was decided

in the last game, but Martin Swiss done well to pick up five points against a very strong Natalie Bar. The only other team to pick up a more comfortable victory in last Thursday’s action was Wombat Bar who took a 7-4 win over Hole in One. Hole in One is new team to the league, but one which has a number of good players. The final game in last Thursday’s action was between Ting Tong and Caddy Shack, with Caddy Shack walking away with a narrow 5-6 win.

Why yoga and surfing are a heavenly match Continued from page 32 ...Surfers can use yoga as a physical and mental practice to improve surfing performance, enhance flexibility and improve our breathe control. Surfing workouts from an excellent yoga teacher are a brilliant way to functionally train your mind-body in a manner that can help find a peak performance state and get into ‘flow’. Yoga is 99% practice. That simply means – results arrive when you practice. In other words – it only works when you do. You do not have to get all funky and tie yourself into knots (unless you want too). Simple stretching is a great way to start and is a fantastic way to increase energy. Just focus on your breath and stretch out on flat days, nonsurfing days or before or after surfing workouts as warm ups or cool downs. For the best results participate in a real yoga class with an experienced teacher. Yes – the first few times might be a weird experience, so what – get over it and get into it. England on the brink of 5-0 Ashes thrashing > p29

GO WITH THE ‘FLOW’ Yoga can help you develop exceptional surfing fitness Hayden Rhodes

T Hayden going with the ‘flow’ on one of those special days when everything seems to just click.

his photo was taken on one of those ‘special’ days that surfers dream about; waves lining the horizon, crystal smooth waters and only a few people in the water. It was an epic morning, one of those ‘dream’ days, and I remember thinking, ‘holy s***’ this place is pumping – I better get my ‘flow’ on before the crowds arrive. You know the cycle; paddle into a wave – surf fast – duck dive, duck

dive, duck dive – paddle back out as fast as possible – REPEAT. Literally, that’s all we did. Pushing our limits, facing a few fears and catching wave after wave before the crowds arrived. On days like this having exceptional surfing fitness pays off. Big time. And that’s where Yoga will really help you. You see yoga and surfing compliment each other brilliantly. Both aim to push you outside your comfort zones. Both challenge your mind and body at the same time. Both twist you into uncomfortable situations and challenge you to remain calm under pressure. Athletes have a term called being

in ‘flow’ – a state when everything just ‘clicks’. This is the performance state you want to be in when you surf or compete. Everything flows as one, the mind and body functions perfectly together – and yoga is the perfect surfing training supplement to compliment your surfing workouts. As most of you are probably aware, yoga is a mind body training system that comes in many styles and encourages participants to adopt specific bodily postures, learn about breath control and possibly include meditation and / or spiritual growth. yoga is widely practised world wide for health and relaxation… Continued page 31
