PHUKET LITTLE DRAGON CONFIRMED AS A NEW SPECIES The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th
S
cientists on Monday (Dec 19) confirmed that Phuket was home to an entirely new species on the planet: a particularly horny lizard now officially known as Acanthosaura phuketensis. The discovery was originally made by Belgian biologist Olivier Pauwels and his team Montri Sumontha, Kirati Kunya, Awat Nitikul, Phamon
Samphanthamit, Perry Wood Jr and Lee Grismer amid jungle in central Phuket. Although the discovery was published in the scientific journal Zootaxa late last year, the confirmation this week followed a lengthy verification process ensuring the lizard was indeed the first of its kind identified on Earth. The Acanthosaura phuketensis grows to 35cm long and has long horns on the head and a row of sharp spines along its back, and the lizard’s name
is dedicated to Phuket, explained Mr Pauwels. ‘‘It literally means spiny lizard from Phuket; it is an extraordinary discovery,” he said. In spite of its scary looks, the lizard is harmless. ‘‘It feeds mostly on insects. It is very discreet, and lives on trees in dense forest. It rarely comes down to the forest floor,’’ Mr Pauwels told The Phuket News. ‘‘Although Phuket is one of the most touristic places in the World, this is the third such major discovery

Pauwels, 45, who works as a Research Associate at the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences in Brussels, Belgium, has already described 80 new species. Four years ago his team discovered a viper in the middle of the island, the ‘‘Phuket Bamboo Pit Viper’’…

New species discovered in island jungle reserves Continued from page 1 ...They also discovered a unique gecko at the Khao Phra Thaeo Non-Hunting Area in Thalang, where team member Mr Awat once served as chief. The gecko was subsequently named Cyrtodactylus phuketensis. The rapid pace of development, driven by tourism and the island’s property industry, worries Mr Pauwels. ‘‘Human infrastructures still expand, threatening the last remaining tropical forest patches on the island. This new discovery stresses how important it is to save the remaining jungle on the island. If these forests disappear, many unique creatures which live only there will also disappear,’’ he said. Piyawat Sukon, Chief of the Khao Phra Thaeo Non-Hunting Area Office in Thalang, this week told The Phuket News that he was unaware of any new lizard species in his park area. “I know nothing about this yet, but our office should be informed for research,” he said. “We have records of similar species in Khao Phra Thaeo, the Marked Spring Lizard (Acanthosaura cf. Mr Pauwels explained that his team have worked for years in discovering new species in Phuket. “We worked in collaboration with the Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre of Phuket and began to comb through the jungle. This led to the discovery of VanDeventer’s Rock Gecko Cnemaspis vandeventeri in 2010, the Phuket Pitviper Trimeresurus phuketensis in 2011, the Phuket Bent-toed Gecko Cyrtodactylus phuketensis in 2012 and the Phuket Horned Tree Agamid Acanthosaura phuketensis (also known as the Phuket Little Dragon) in 2015! “Absolutely fantastic and unexpected! Not sure if more reptile species remain to be discovered on Phuket Island, but who knows, so we are pursuing our research,” Mr Pauwels told The Phuket News.

he Phuket office of the Highways Dept was congratulated for completing the Samkong Underpass, which was finally officially opened with a ceremony on Tuesday (Dec 20), more than 18 months behind schedule. The plaudits came during an official opening speech delivered inside the tunnel by Phuket Vice Governor Teera Anantaseriwidhya at 7am. Meanwhile, traffic backed up on the surface roads at the busy intersection above as the northbound lanes through the underpass had been closed since 10pm Monday night to accommodate the ceremony. “We want to congratulate the Phuket Highways Office, who was in charge of the Samkong Underpass construction and completed this project for the public to help solve traffic problems on the island,” said V/Gov Teera. “We also hope that the construction of the underpasses at the Bang Khu Intersection, Chalong Circle and at the airport turn-off will be finished by 2017 and 2018,” he added.
The Highways Dept Phuket office was congratulated for completing the underpass, which was officially opened on Tuesday (Dec 20), 18 months behind schedule. Photo: PR Dept The official opening began early Tuesday morning with Buddhist and Islamic blessing ceremonies performed. In addition to the official speeches made, the ensemble of officials present sang the National Anthem as well as the Royal Anthem to honour the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away on October 13. The opening ceremony came after Highways Dept officials confirmed in October that no such ceremony would take place after so many delays
had forced the underpass to open 18 months late. “We will have no opening ceremony whatsoever. What’s the point? The road is already open for the public to use and I do not want to hear any more criticism about this project,” said Project Engineer Chalermpon Wongkietkun of the Phuket Highways Office, who was assigned to oversee the project. “It’s has been a long and tough time for us working on this project. To have an-
other public announcement or opening ceremony would be a disgrace,” he told The Phuket News. Contractor Vivat Construction Co Ltd, which built the underpass with a government budget of B834 million, now faces fines totalling at least B570mn for breach of contract due to late completion. Mr Chalermpon has since transferred out of Phuket and is now a Project Engineer with the Highways Dept office in Songkhla province.

hree people were killed and seven more were injured when a visa run van from Phuket slammed into house in Phang Nga on Wednesday morning (Dec 21). Among the dead were two Russian men, police said. The van slid off a bend and slammed into a house in Muang District at 7:30am. The van was carrying 10 people from Phuket to Satun on a visa run operated by Phuketbased KBV Visa Run, said Capt Chatree Pienkhayai of the Phang Nga City Police. In the van were Thai nationals, Russians and at least one Indonesian, he said. Two Russians and one “Asian national” woman were reported dead at the scene when emergency firstresponders arrived. Three passengers were still trapped inside the van, forcing the rescue workers to use “jaws of life” hydraulic cutters to free them from the wreck. The three dead and seven passengers, some of them

A GERMAN MAN IS IN the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Vachira Phuket Hospital following a fight with security guards from Bangla Rd in Patong in the early hours of last Sunday morning (Dec 18). Tourist Police reported that the man had suffered a blood clot to his brain. Lt Col Somsak Thonggleng of the Patong Police on Monday (Dec 19) confirmed that 31-year-old Thomas Rapp was being treated for a blood clot to his brain after getting into a fight with security guards from a restaurant on Bangla Rd. Col Somsak declined to name the restaurant. “A security guard told us that Mr Rapp and his friend Christian Graile, 26, had been eating and drinking in the
restaurant. At around 1:30am they asked for their bill which there was some dispute over. “The waiting staff could not understand Mr Rapp because he was drunk so they called the security guards to assist them. While they were discussing the bill Mr Rapp smashed one of the security guards in the face and a fight ensued. “Mr Rapp was knocked unconscious and taken to hospital,” he said. Police have so far questioned one guard about the incident and are currently looking for a further two who witnessed the incident. CCTV footage is also being checked to assist them with their investigation. Eakkapop Thongtub

Great beaches, but do we need more toilets? PHUKET POLL

he state of public toilets in Thailand has gained a reputation around the world as something to take into consideration when visiting the Kingdom, and Phuket is no exception. Public toilets are few and far between, even in popular tourist areas on the island, and the state of the ones that do exist is less than ideal. Even if local residents know where to look, or who to ask, to find the nearest toilet, tourists may not be so savvy – especially without the language skills or an under-

Drunk man fishing for snails drowns in pond A MAN DROWNED LAST Sunday (Dec 18) after entering a pond in Kathu to fish for apple snails, a delicacy in Isan (Northeastern Thailand). Local residents notified Capt Wichot Meepop of the Kathu Police at 11:45am that a man had drowned in a small pond in Soi Rongpoon, off Wichit Songkram Rd. Police arrived at the scene with Kusoldharm rescue workers to find the body of a shirtless man lying on the banks of the lagoon. The man was identified by police only as “Mr Narong”, reportedly 40-45 years of age, from Isan. “We found no injuries or signs of assault on the body. We believe had been dead for no more than one hour when we arrived,” Capt Wichot said. Police were told that Mr Narong’s body had been recovered from the water by his friend and drinking buddy, named by police only as “Mr Wiroj”. Mr Wiroj told police that he and Mr Narong had come to the pond to fish for apple snails. He also said that Mr Wiroj

Taxi drivers fight hike in airport access fee

M
ore than 100 metered taxi drivers operating out of Phuket International Airport massed at Phuket Provincial Hall Wednesday last week (Dec 14) to file a formal complaint over being charged what they called “exorbitant” fees for parking at the airport, among a slew of other grievances. The complaint was received by Apiwat Yodwan, Chief of the Phuket Damrongdhama Centre (Ombudsman’s Office). Manop Pacha, who heads the metered taxi drivers at the airport, explained that after Phuket Taxi Metre Co Ltd won the government contract from Airports of Thailand (AoT) to manage all metered taxis at the airport, the company hiked fees for parking at the airport from B200 to B500 per month per taxi. There are more than 300 metered taxi drivers operating out of the airport, Mr

Huge king cobra caught in local Chalong house Metered taxi drivers gathered at Phuket Provincial Hall to file a formal complaint about parking fees charged at Phuket International Airport. Photo: PR Dept Manop noted, meaning a hike from B60,000 to B150,000 in parking fees collected from metered taxi drivers each month. “We want provincial officers to talk to with airport officials and Phuket Taxi Metre Co Ltd management to consider changing the car park location and reducing the fee back to B200 per vehicle,” Mr Manop said. “We think the fee is too high compared with what the company has to offer. The quality of service from the
company is lacking many things, such as not enough parking space for all members. We can only park about 10 vehicles at the airport at a time, but there are over 300 metered taxis serving the airport,” he said. “We are also concerned about safety issues when vehicles enter or leave the area, the curves make it difficult to see clearly and makes the area prone to accidents. Moreover, there is no restroom or waiting area for drivers nearby,” Mr Manop added.
Traffic stalls as pickup erupts into fire T R A F F I C O N T H E Pkrasattri Rd in Srisoonthorn was brought to a standstill on Monday (Dec 19) when a pickup truck caught fire. Thalang Police Capt Sunan Pethnoo was informed that a blue Toyota Hilux Vigo was ablaze at 11am. Rescue workers were dispatched and immediately closed the road. Rescue workers were unsuccessful in dousing the f lames and called the fire service, but by the time firefighters arrived the vehicle was engulfed in flames. They took 10 minutes to put out the fire.
@thephuketnews
Police discovered oil from the car on the road and believe a short-circuit in the car caused the spark which ignited the oil. Pickup owner Wichai Buasri, 33, told police that he was driving past the Heroines Monument on his way to Phuket Town when he noticed smoke coming from the en-
gine. He stopped at the side of the road, saw a spark come from the vehicle and then the whole pickup caught fire. “I immediately went to the nearest police and reported the incident,” Mr Wichai said. Police said they discovered oil from the car on the road and they believe a short-circuit caused the spark which ignited the oil. However, police are still investigating the incident and are likely to contact a vehicle expert who will be able to confirm the true cause of the fire. Eakkapop Thongtub
Chief Apiwat accepted the formal complaint, and added, “We will talk with airport authorities concerning this issue and will let you know of any progress.” Government contracts for all private services operating at Phuket International Airport are offered through Airports of Thailand PLC, which operates all six major international airports in Thailand. Last year AoT posted a net profit of B18,728 billion, a year-on-year increase in net profit of 53.26 per cent.
A THREE-METRE KING cobra was caught by Ruamjai Rescue Foundation volunteers after a house-owner in Chalong found the snake hiding among the vases from his collection. Alerted at 3:30pm last Friday (Dec 16), the Phuket Ruamjai Rescue Foundation’s head Sayan Thammaphan and his team arrived at a house in Chao Fa Thani Village on Kwang Rd and discovered a snake hiding among decorative vases in a storage room. To their surprise, the snake turned out to be a deadly venomous king cobra. “When he initially noticed the snake, the owner of the house believed it was only a rat snake. But having looked at it, we learned the snake
was actually a king cobra,” Mr. Sayan said. “The cobra was hiding among the vases, so it was hard to catch it. My team spent some time moving the vases first and only then I managed to catch the snake with special equipment,” the snake expert explained, noting that the cobra was measured at three metres in length. “It was long,” he added. “The owner of the house told us that he had seen the snake in a lake nearby, but he never thought it would come into the house,” Mr Sayan said. The snake was later released in the wild. The Phuket Ruamjai Rescue Foundation can be contacted at 076-283 346-7. The Phuket News

The alarm was raised after people reported hundreds of small fish – all dead – along a one-kilometre stretch at the southern end of Patong Beach at about 5 to 6pm. “The dead fish came from the fishermen who operate out of Klong Pakbang at the southern end of Patong,” Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup told The Phuket News. “The fishing community there use beach seines at the south end of Patong Beach. However, after questioning the victims and taking an alcohol test, which came back negative, we agreed that this was just an unfortunate accident so he only paid the minimum fine. “The truck’s insurance company will take care of all the costs for repairing the electricity pylon, wires and the part of the road damaged in the accident. The main issue we need to solve under this policy is forest land encroachment.” Mr Kasem noted that the mass destruction of the rubber plantations should have come as no surprise to local residents. “We came today because forest officials in Thalang filed a police report of encroachment in March,” he said. “The claimants have been warned twice, and most recently we gave them 45 days to remove their rubber trees and vacate the area, but they refused to comply,” he added. The news was posted on the “Help for Matthias” Facebook page last Sunday (Dec 18). Angelika Ilter and Oliver Horn, who is General Manager at InterContinental Hotels Group, set up two accounts for donations after they launched an appeal to help cover mounting medical bills as Mr Jaeckel remained minimally responsive but comatose since his cardiac arrest on Nov 22. Friend Gerdy Muller also set up a GoFundMe page titled “Help For Matthias”, as Ms Ilter flew to Phuket to oversee arrangements for Mr Jaeckel’s medivac to Germany.

WORK IS UNDERWAY ON building a 180-metre-long retaining wall on the road leading up to the Khao Rang Viewpoint in Phuket Town following landslides caused by heavy rain. Work on the project started in October and is expected to be complete by February next year. The construction area starts at the Phuket View Restaurant on Khaw Sim Bee Rd and continues to the T-junction entering the viewpoint, Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana told The Phuket News on Tuesday (Dec 20). Heavy vehicles are prohibited from using the road during construction, she added. “Heavy rains through-

We had the same problem four or five years ago but this year it got worse so we had to start construction on the retaining wall to stop any further landslides,” Mayor Somjai said. “The viewpoint is becoming more popular with tourists and we have to ensure that the road is safe for people visiting the area,” she said. “When the wall is complete it will be two metres tall and 184m-long. Construction started on Oct 22 and is due to be complete on Feb 17, 2017,” she added. Mayor Somjai declined to say what budget was allocated for the project. Yutthawat Lekmak

Avoiding the Christmas bash
D
espite what many people might think after reading news reports of death, injury and violence week in and week out, most visitors have an uneventful holiday in Phuket. Indeed, according to most people’s comments on the main travel web boards, they actually enjoy their stay on the island. The regular news reports only serve to offer fair warning that Phuket may be paradise for some, but it certainly is not a utopia. Real life can kick in, especially for people who have never ridden a motorbike before and decide to rent one for their holiday, or when alcohol is involved, and most certainly when both factors are involved. But poor 31-year-old German tourist Thomas Rapp likely had no idea how vicious security staff on Patong’s Bangla Rd can be, especially over something as menial as a dispute over
a bill at what police called a “restaurant” – one that was open at 1:30am. Of course that may have been only the primer for the fight, and the real reason for the standard violent over-reaction by the “bouncers” could have been something as trivial as a poor choice of verbal insult. We’ll have to wait to hear Mr Rapp’s version of events, if and when he recovers from the blood clot to his brain while in the ICU at Vachira Phuket Hospital. There is no excuse for the security’s staff reaction to the situation. They should be sacked and charged with at least affray causing bodily harm regardless of their claimed justification for the attack. They most certainly should not be let off the hook like the cowards whose attack on Australian tourists made global headlines in 2015. As such, the incident has yet again called into question
the so-called qualifications for the thugs who provide security in Phuket’s premier nightlife district. There is no excuse for security staff resorting to such measures; they are supposed to be the experts in preventing and containing violence, not instigating or perpetuating it. So during this festive season in the spirit of peace and goodwill to all men, we implore all holidaymakers in Phuket to enjoy a violence-free Christmas. If you genuinely believe someone is trying to rip you off, call for the expat police volunteers on patrol. That way at least someone will recognise the position you are in. Also, there are very few situations in Thailand that an apology and a respectful wai – deserved or not – cannot see you walk away from. Use this advice wisely. Have a Merry Christmas Phuket.

HAVE YOUR SAY The government’s Who needs toilets contempt for roads when you have beggars belief shopping malls? Re: Phuket underpass grand opening preparations cause major tailbacks Unbelievable. The utter contempt these people show for other people trying to go about their daily lives (and livelihoods) is beyond belief. Just so they can have a photo session, pat each other on the back despite being 18 months late and then, no doubt, all go off for a slap up lunch somewhere (at tax-payer expense?). “At last report, the contractor, Vivat Construction Co Ltd, stood to be fined some B570 million for the late completion.” Yeah right, like that will ever happen. And I am not picking on Thailand here, a countr y with the most lovely people, it is the same everywhere, the public sector (government) is always and everywhere incompetent and generally corrupt. Obviously I am not suggesting there is corruption here in Phuket, no, no, no, just incompetence, honest. Andy
Re: Phuket’s urgent question: Does the island need more public toilets? Why would Phuket need more public toilets? What Phuket needs is more shopping malls under-roof, with airconditioning and blue lagoons with artificial palms. Phuket needs more duty free malls, gem and latex palaces. In these places quality tourists can comfortably spend their time and money. A plan to connect these places with airconditioned buses and a light rail system will be announced soon. Everybody who is leaving Phuket with money in their pockets will not get the stamp “Quality Tourist” in their passport and will have difficulties to return next time. Why should Phuket spend money for beach guards, beach cleaning and toilets or manage the waste water? The beach is only for cheapo tourists who steal their daily sandwich ration at the hotel breakfast buffet and buy a bottle of water at Supercheap... Amen! Jome

People are going swimming to urinate because there’s no toilets at Surin Beach. They also climb the stairs at the far end of the beach and go to the toilet in the long grass. What sort of country is this when they can’t even have one toilet block at each beach? The only toilet at Surin Beach is 100 metre’s from the beach. Why can’t they build one in or near the car park? Phuket authorities have said they are useless and are cutting the budget next year, which will probably mean no lifeguards on the beaches. All the lives they have saved this year will be lost next year. Any money saved will be spent on another useless event/project instead. Incredibly stupid thinking marcher
Re: Phuket airport sets out beach safety zone, warning system The death sentence!? For going to a public beach!? Wow, what a country. The airport has much more important problems to worry about right now. Hackers strike the state Anti-single gateway group protest by targeting government sites BANGKOK Bangkok Post editor3@classactmedia.co.th
A
nti-computer law hackers on Monday (Dec 19) launched cyber attacks on at least six government websites to protest the amended computer crime law. Civilians Against Single Gateway Group called on its supporters to join the attack targeting the websites of the Defence Ministry and the Ministry of Digital Economy from 1pm to 9pm. Such an attack, known as distributed denial of service, involves sending so many requests to a targeted website simultaneously that it crashes. The group also said that it had enlisted support from several activists affiliated with the so-called Anonymous hacker group. An Error 404 (meaning the web page is not available) was reported when attempting to access the Ministry of Defence’s website http://mod. go.th at 2:30pm on Monday

The self-styled Civilians Against Single Gateway Group attacked at least six government websites on Monday (Dec 19). Photo: via Bangkok Post while the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society’s site at mict.go.th was briefly unavailable at 4pm. At 4pm, it was reported that several other government websites could not be accessed. Among them were the Royal Gazette site at www.ratchakitcha.soc.go.th; the junta’s public site at www.thaigov.go.th; the prime minister’s office site, www.opm.go.th, and the
National Security Council’s public website, www.nsc.go,th. An official responsible for www.ratchakitcha.soc. go.th said the website had experienced some problems since Monday morning and it was being fixed. However, it appeared that the stricken websites were down from time to time. Defence spokesma n Kongcheep Tantrawanich
admitted a group of people tried to hack into the ministry’s network but the attack did not cause “much” damage. “We detected attempts to hack into the Defence Ministry’s website. They failed because we have a system to defend it,” he said. The defence ministry’s website was the only one of the six known hacked sites that was still unreachable on
Tuesday morning (Dec 20). Maj Gen Kongcheep said hacking into a government website was not the right approach to solve a problem and such a move was simply due to a lack of proper understanding about the computer crime law. He insisted the amended computer crime law, which was passed by the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) last Friday (Dec 15), was not related to the controversial single gateway concept lambasted by critics as a government tool to wrest control of the flow of information online. Maj Gen Kongcheep also gave his assurances that government agencies had ways to effectively handle any hacking. He said hack attacks would only make state agencies more vigilant. “As for reports that foreigners have joined the attacks, I would like to remind them that doing so is unlawful. Attacks on the financial, banking, transport and other systems will cause damage to the Thai public,” he said. Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paojinda urged crit-
ics to try to understand that the computer crime law has nothing to do with the single gateway idea. Asked if a planned cyber attack would affect the Interior Ministry’s public service such as ID card renewal, he said authorities concerned were trying their best to protect the system. Gen Anupong also stressed that nothing good would come from such hacking. NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai appealed to the civil sector to support a data privacy bill designed to deal with personal data breaches. “I’m urging civic groups to help push the bill governing personal data protection. We’re concerned about personal data vulnerabilities and this law should give us a tool to better protect data privacy,” he said. Mr Pornpetch defended the amendment to the computer crime legislation, saying it was designed to reduce the power of investigators while maintaining that of the courts to ensure computer crimerelated cases proceed with transparency.

Three Israelis hurt in Chiang Mai zipline fall CHIANG MAI THREE ISRAELI TOURists, including a seven-yearold boy, were injured after they collided and fell from a zipline ride in Mae On district last Friday (Dec 16). Authorities last Saturday (Dec 17) ordered the suspension of the ride operated by Flight of the Gibbon Co in Mae Kampong village in tambon Hua Kaew following the incident. The two adults and a boy were gliding along the zipline when they rammed into the back of one another, said Mae On District Chief Pattraporn Laijud. The impact caused them to fall to the ground and they were rushed to Chiang Mai Ram Hospital. The injured were identified
as Ms Orit Rov, 40, Mr Sahar Meir, 42, and Liam Boborow, 7. All were Israeli nationals visiting the adventure park with their families. The two adults are being treated at the hospital, with Ms Orit in intensive care. The boy was treated for shoulder injuries and discharged. Maj Gen Pitthaya Sirirak, acting deputy chief of Provincial Police Region 5, led an investigation at the scene last Saturday, after which the ride was ordered closed. A Chinese tourist fell to her death on Oct 11 last year from a zipline at Flying Squirrels, another tourist venue in Mae Rim district of Chiang Mai. That incident prompted a nationwide investigation of safety procedures at adventure parks. Bangkok Post

Drug police make record ya ice bust CHUMPHON
T
hai police last Friday (Dec 16) unveiled a record half ton seizure of crystal meth (ya ice), as authorities target a key overland drug route through the kingdom and into Malaysia. The haul of high-grade meth has a street value of around $40 million (B14.4bn), the Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) said in a statement. Seven Thais have been charged with drug trafficking, it added. Last Wednesday night’s (Dec 14) bust unfolded after a car stopped suspiciously short of a police patrol in southern Chumphon province. A police search found nothing in the vehicle. “But the driver was acting suspiciously, refusing to answer mobile phone calls in the presence of police... he began to shake and sweat,” the NSB said. Officers scoured the road for other suspicious cars, aware

The 18-wheel vehicle was found parked at a petrol station in Chumphon town with 500 bars of the drug wrapped in black plastic bags and hidden under sacks of corn husks, the NSB said. “It’s a record seizure of these drugs (ya ice),” Maj Gen
Dusadee Choosangkij said. “I believe they were to be stored in Malaysia and then destined for either Australia or Taiwan.” Ya ice, which is highly addictive, sells for around three million baht a kilogram on Bangkok’s streets. With long land borders, Thailand is a key route for ya ice, methamphetamine “ya bah” and heroin produced in factories in Myanmar and Laos. Much of the production
is controlled by Myanmar’s powerful and heavily armed Wa ethnic group, whose high quality pills and heroin are stamped with their own logos. The drugs are transported by car or foot across remote borders and sold to Thai gangsters. Last week six Wa tribesmen were killed in a late night shoot-out with a Thai army patrol near the rugged Golden Triangle border region. Bangkok Post

Bidding for Christmas tree record despite church snub SRI LANKA

S
ri Lankan cricket legend Arjuna Ranatunga announced on Monday (Dec 19) that he was reviving his bid to build a record-breaking 100-metre tall Christmas tree in Sri Lanka’s capital despite opposition from the Catholic church. Ranatunga, who is also a government minister, said the project was back on track after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe spoke to the Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Ranjith. “The work resumed this morning after the prime minister’s intervention with the archbishop,” Ranatunga said in a statement. “It will be ready for Christmas.” There was no immediate comment from the archbishop who described the scheme as “wasteful expenditure” last week and said that the estimated $200,000 (B7.17 million) cost would have been better spent on alleviating poverty. Ranatunga, who led Sri

The 53-year-old, who represents a largely Catholic parliamentary constituency, had recently laid the steel base of the tree, which was beginning to take shape on Colombo’s Galle Face beach-
front promenade. Ranatunga had said that it would be the tallest artificial Christmas tree ever built anywhere in the world. According to Guinness World Records, the largest artificial Christmas tree was erected in the southern Chinese province of Guangzhou last year, measuring around 55m tall. A team in Mexico claimed
to have erected a 90m tree in 2009. Last year Sri Lanka’s Catholic church urged priests not to put up Christmas trees in their churches over the festive period, with Cardinal Ranjith saying they had no religious significance. Sri Lanka is a mainly Buddhist country but around 1.2mn of its population of 21mn are Catholics.
IT MAY BE TRYING TO disguise itself as tinsel, but look more closely and this is a deadly tiger snake which climbed up a Christmas tree in Australia. A woman called Cheryl noticed the uninvited and highly venomous guest in her Melbourne home last Sunday (Dec 18) but somehow managed to keep her cool – making a cup of tea while she waited for a professional snake-catcher to arrive. “It was a tiger snake. They are very deadly but only if
you hurt them,” snake-catcher Barry Goldsmith, who removed the reptile, said during an interview on Monday (Dec 19). “It most probably came in through an open door, but Cheryl was very sensible about it. “She didn’t panic, she just took a photo and sent it to the snake-catcher, me, and 20 minutes later I had the little bugger in a bag.” Australia is home to 20 of the world’s 25 most venomous snakes, including the tiger snake which can grow up to 2.9 metres (10 feet) and is usually found in coastal areas. Winning Spain’s el ‘Gordo’
What’s it like to take a windfall in the world’s richest lottery? SPAIN AFP editor3@classactmedia.co.th
T
wo years ago, a district in Madrid got lucky in Spain’s hugely popular Christmas lottery, with people working or living there winning prizes of between 120,000 (B4.48 million) and 3mn euros (B112mn). As Spaniards gear up for the next windfall from the world’s richest lottery known as el “Gordo”, or the “Fat One”, we asked the 2014 winners in the Almagro area – and people who know them – how their lives had changed. The answer? Some retired early, others opened a new business and one football betting addict lost all his money. But, by and large, many kept going steadily on in the same job. Their profiles vary widely, from 32 workers at Madrid’s Wax Museum – 80 per cent of whom continue to work there – to employees of the exclusive Genova Financial Club, shopkeepers, insurance
People queue to buy Christmas lottery tickets in central Madrid. Photo: AFP brokers and nuns. People like Arturo Aguirre, owner of the Kalko stationery store, who won 320,000 euros (B11.9mn) two years ago on December 22, the day each year when the lottery is drawn. Unlike other big lotteries that generate just a few big winners, Spain’s Christmas lottery aims to share the wealth, with thousands of numbers getting a prize. “On the Wednesday I signed for a bank loan (to buy the store), on the Thursday the lottery ticket seller gave me a ticket as a gift, and on the
Monday I won,” Aguirre said. The father of two teenage boys said winning the money had had a hugely soothing effect, “as if they operated on the nerves.” The man behind this lucky turn of events was Lino Cuervo, the local lottery ticket seller whose shop is just a few metres away from the stationery store. That year, he became Father Christmas, earning his customers 416mn euros (B15.536bn) in winning tickets out of a nationwide total of 2.2bn euros.
He and his family also profited from winning tickets, prompting such an outburst of merriment and partying that his daughter went into labour and gave birth the next day. The Christmas lottery has been held uninterrupted in Spain since 1812, even during the 1936-39 civil war when each side held its own draw during the conflict. It has become a popular Christmas tradition in Spain with friends, colleagues and bar regulars banding together to buy tickets. The decision of many win-
ners to continue with their normal lives is not surprising. A 2005 study by Sweden’s University of Gothenburg found that 62% of those who won the lottery in that country had continued to work. Another study published in 2010 by three US researchers analysed the evolution of close to 35,000 lottery winners in Florida between 1993 and 2002. They found that the windfall did not solve their money problems long term. “The results indicate that giving $50,000 (B1.7mn) to $150,000 (B5.38mn) to people only postpones bankruptcy,” the study said. “Specifically, while these recipients are 50% less likely than small winners to file for bankruptcy immediately after winning, they are more likely to file for bankruptcy three to five years after winning,” it added. Javier Gaite, a financial adviser specialised in income management, said the best option was to save money, pay off any existing debt and “invest carefully”. Many of those inter-
viewed did just that, including some of the 25 staff of the El Mentidero de la Villa restaurant. Then chef Jose Ynglada won big – 3.5mn euros (B130mn). “I still haven’t touched it. It’s in my daughters’ fund, in the bank,” said Ynglada, who now works in another restaurant and has no intention of quitting as chef. It’s the same story – albeit with only around 100,000 euros (B3.73mn) – for Daniel Drouet, an Ecuadorian waiter at El Mentidero de la Villa. He has placed his winnings in a fund at an international bank, with a view of potentially opening his own business later. “I don’t want to hurry, I want to think about it and see,” he said. One man who did quit his job was head chef Daniel Domingo. Instead, he opened a shop selling – guess what? Lottery tickets. The business was financed along with his wife and another colleague using their combined winnings of 360,000 euros (B13.45mn).

oogle Thailand kingpins came to Phuket last week to highlight the range of online services the global search giant has launched to support tourism specifically to Phuket and the surrounding Andaman region. The key announcements at the event, held at the Cape Sienna Phuket Hotel & Villas, Kamala Beach, last Friday (Dec 16), were 360-degree virtual tours of nearby islands and ramped up Google Translate and Google Photos apps to add to tourists’ travel experiences. “We’re delighted to bring some of Thailand’s most spectacular islands online,” said Michael Jittvanich, Head of Marketing, Google Thailand. “As Thailand continues to be one of the world’s most sought-after tourism destinations, we’re happy to help provide local and international

We hope that this new imagery encourages people from near and far to explore more of the wonders of Thailand’s South,” he added. The Andaman island destinations now available for virtual tours via Street View or Google Maps on mobile
platforms include the Similan Islands and a Moken sea gypsy village at the Surin Islands; Koh Tachai off the coast of Phang Nga; Koh Racha Yai south of Phuket and Koh Maithon to the west of Phuket, and the Koh Rok Yai and Koh Rok Noi islands off Krabi. On show at the event was
a surprisingly light backpack fitted with the full 360-degree cameras that made the “offroad” images possible. “Thailand is one of the most popular travel destinations searched for through online search engines globally,” Mr Jittvanich explained. “The next stage for tourism to the region is for tourists to venture to ‘unknown’ locations which are hard to get to. This is where digital mobile support steps in, and that is where Google becomes part of people planning their holidays,” he told The Phuket News. Of note, the relaunched Google Translate app for Thai allows travellers to speak into the app, or handwrite to input the language to be translated. Also, now with Word Lens built in, the app allows instant camera translations, for example from English to Thai. Also updated is Google Photos to help tourists organise and share photos, noted Saiyai Sakawee, Google Thailand’s Public Relations chief.

Phuket Hotels Association President Anthony Lark (3rd left) welcomes guests of honour Khun Methee Tanmanatragul, (8th left) to their recent meeting at Andara Resort & Villas.
Phuket Hotels Assoc hits 50 ahead of launch at TTF HOSPITALITY THE RECENTLY FORMED Phuket Hotels Association has quickly caught the attention of key players in the hotel industry on the island, reaching its target of 50 members this year ahead of its official launch at the upcoming Thailand Tourism Forum in January. Led by Trisara General Manager Anthony Lark in the role of President, the Phuket Hotels Association now represents a membership profile of many of the island’s leading internationally branded and independent luxury and mid-scale hotels for a total of 8,820 rooms. “It is a good start,” said Mr Lark at the membership update event held at Andara Resort & Villas recently. “But we still have a lot of work to do as we
aim to double membership by the end of next year. “We are pleased that the industry on the island appreciates the importance of the Phuket Hotels Association so we can build the profile of the destination and speak with the same voice in international markets as we develop Brand Phuket,” he said. Phuket Hotels Association will be officially launched on January 23, 2017 at the Thailand Tourism Forum being held at InterContinental Bangkok by founder and Thailand hotel veteran Wichit Na Ranong, who will be accompanied by Outrigger Resorts Vice President, Sales & Marketing Asia Pacific and head of marketing for Phuket Hotels Association Mark Simmons and QUO CEO David Keen. slow New Year sales. The centre estimates that during the New Year holiday Bangkok residents will spend B28,500bn, up just 5 per cent compared with an 8% jump during the New Year holidays last year. Of the spending projections, B9.2bn will go to the Food & Beverage trade, while B8bn will go to tourism, mainly for accommodation. Shopping will account for B4.4bn, mostly spent on souvenirs and presents, while B4.1bn will be spent on cash gifts to parents and siblings,
and B2.8bn to making merit, mainly in Buddhist temples. The average New Year spend per person will be B5,400, the centre estimates. The Thai Cabinet has approved an extra public holiday, January 3, in addition to January 2, to give residents a four-day break. The New Year holiday will start Saturday, December 31 and end Tuesday, January 3. To boost spending during the holidays, the Cabinet last week approved the much-awaited shopping tax break, a short-term measure
to stimulate year-end domestic consumption. The tax incentive allows each individual taxpayer to deduct the value of domestic purchases of goods and services from personal income taxes during Dec 15-31, an increase of 11 days from last year’s seven days. The tax deduction has been capped at B15,000 per person, as it was last year. The offer is not valid for purchases of liquor, beer, wine, tobacco, vehicles, motorcycles, ships or fuel for vehicles and all forms of boat,
Shoppers are expected to take advantage of the holiday tax breaks, which are hoped to generate B1bn in spending. yacht and other sea transport. The measure also omits purchases of lodging and tour packages, as the Cabinet on Nov 29 approved a raft of tourism stimulus measures, including a B15,000 tax break on domestic tour packages
and hotel accommodation for individual taxpayers. The tourism stimulus scheme runs from Dec 1-31 and is expected to result in an economic multiplier effect worth B1bn. TTR / Bangkok Post

Andamaya rises in the north PROPERTY
The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th
T
he Andamaya project, nestled on a hillside with far-reaching views encompassing all of Bang Tao Beach and Surin Beach, recently launched onto the market with the simple goal of offering competitive price per square meter rates for highend quality lifestyle units with views unlikely to be matched by any other development in the area. Andamaya was launched in late October, but the seed for the project was planted 12 years ago, explained partner investor Patrick Sarfati. His partner, Michel Chiappetta of Phuket Asia Land, has been living in Phuket for about 15 years. “Michel had bought the land a long time ago, but there was no access to it when I viewed it five years ago, so I said, ‘If anything changes, please let me know,’” explained Mr Sarfati, himself a Phuket resident for the past six years. “Then about 18 months ago, the ideal access to the land became available, and
The Andamaya, under construction at Surin, offers far-reaching views encompassing all of Bang Tao Beach and Surin Beach. Image: Andamaya now we can move ahead with something we both have wanted to do for a long time.” The vision for Andamaya is simple: “We wanted to create something that no one else was doing. We chose not to create villas. We wanted to offer something we did not find elsewhere, we wanted to offer volume and space, easy access, quiet living in residential surroundings… “It had to be luxury and feasible, not expansive main-
stream units,” Mr Sarfati explained. “Also, we wanted to be very competitive in price per square metre with the highest European standard level of construction.” The experience from both Mr Sarfati and Mr Chiappetta combined shines in the new development. Mr Sarfati already has many years of real estate experience in Phuket and completed the Siamaya Holiday Resort in
nearby Cherng Talay, while Mr Chiappetta has six completed projects in Phuket, including the Surin Sabai developments, Asia Baan Villas, Surin Sabai Condo, and Cherng Lay Condo and Villas. “When it comes to buying property here, the most common and important questions from buyers boils down to two things: 1) How far is it to the nearest beach? 2) Does it have a sea view?” Mr Sarfati noted. Those questions are well
answered by Andamaya. The entire project comprises three buildings nestled into the hillside at the southern end of Surin. The site is 500 metres from the beach and has panoramic views along the coast. The project consists of three condominiums with a maximum of seven luxury apartments in each. With the exception of studios, all apartments have a private swimming pool and full sea views. There is also a 600sqm sky villa, two penthouse apartments measuring over 300sqm each, and from four- to onebedroom apartments ranging from 50 to 400sqm. Each apartment has a storage room as well as a covered parking place. In addition, at the rear of each building, there are guest studios and maid’s room exclusively for the use of the owners. A huge common swimming pool and a 400sqm fitness rooms with top-quality professional equipment complete the project, which is neighboured only by luxury villa resorts. A private access road with 24-hour security, and underground water and electrical supply are already in place.
“Everything in the units can be bespoken, made to measure. While in the process of construction, we offer a full choice of finishes – floor, paint colour, even the pool tiles can be chosen by the buyer,” Mr Sarfati noted. The location is also a key feature of the project, he added. “We believe Surin will become the next hub for Phuket, after Patong. Surin is halfway between Patong and the airport, and the hill has only high-end resorts – no shoe-box condos,” he said. “Andayama is close to Cherng Talay and Laguna, which is the engine driving growth in the area,” he added. “We believe there are two primary types of investors: those looking to buy in areas south of Kamala – where the large majority of projects are high density / low cost; then there are those looking in the Cherng Talay and Surin areas, and further along Phuket’s northwest coast, where all the developments coming on stream are higher quality and the residential low density areas and beaches on offer are what these buyers are looking for,” Mr Sarfati said.
TAT urges sector to be ready for influx TOURISM THE TOURISM AUTHORity of Thailand (TAT) has called for operators in tourism-related businesses to be well prepared for expected increases in local and foreign tourists next year. Improved facilities should be offered by both public and private sectors to promote the industry in the longer term, said TAT Deputy Governor for Policy and Planning Santi Chudintra. Speaking at a seminar held by Business and Legal Advisory Centre of Assumption University, Mr Santi said travel agencies and tour operators should prepare guidelines that feature hotels, restaurants and
tourist attractions in major cities in Thailand as well as new destinations. “The entire tourism sector should prepare as Thailand’s tourism industry is growing constantly,” said Mr Santi. The TAT set B2.84 trillion in revenue as the target for the tourism industry next year, up by B340 billion on 2016. Domestic tourists are expected to bring in B1.89trn and international arrivals accounting for B950bn. The agency reports there were approximately 30 million international arrivals from Jan 1 to Dec 1 this year, up nearly 10 per cent on the same period last year and generating B1.51trn in revenue, a rise of 14%. In 2015, Thailand welcomed nearly

Despite the zero-dollar tour crackdown, the Aug 12 bombings through Southern Thailand and the mourning period for the passing of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Mr Santi is still confident that Thailand will achieve its tourism revenue target of B2.5trn this year. On the same panel, Adith Chairattananon, secretarygeneral of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), called for more hospitality schools to increase the supply of human resources to strengthen the quality of the tourism industry and support the government in building a sustainable tourism industry in the long term. Sailing in the lap of luxury
Kata Rocks puts Phuket firmly on the superyacht cruising map The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th
T
he first Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous (KRSR) is being hailed by leading industry players as Asia’s top superyacht event, placing Phuket firmly on the global yachting map. The KRSR has raised Phuket to a new level, joining Monaco, St Tropez, Cannes and the Caribbean as one of the world’s preeminent superyacht destinations. Bas Nederpelt, Commercial Director of Feadship said, “The organisers of the 2016 Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous have exceeded all our expectations. Kata Rocks hosted very energetic parties attracting the right crowd and organised a memorable owner’s dinner. The 2017 cruising season could not have had a better kick-off. With KRSR Phuket truly is now well and truly Asia’s top yachting destination.” Over 15 world-class superyachts assembled for this exclusive rendezvous, making it the most successful event of its kind on the Asian superyacht calendar. The KRSR offered a series of bespoke activities, glamorous parties and social events that effortlessly mixed networking and socialising in a relaxed and luxurious environment. Private, extravagant and commer-
cially significant, KRSR welcomed Phuket to superyacht society in grand style. With many luxury destinations now competing specifically for yachts, it’s fast becoming the best way to visit Phuket and its archipelago, the true sign of wealth, style and status has arrived. Richard Pope, Kata Rocks’ and Infinite Luxury Chief Executive, said that everyone was absolutely delighted by the overwhelmingly positive response. “Overall we are thrilled by the response we have received from all KRSR participants. Feedback has been extremely positive and it is very gratifying to help elevate Phuket to elite status as a true luxury destination and superyacht playground.” The unique atmosphere of the KRSR gave the feeling of discretion and intimacy for the selection of brands on display, many of which said they felt like members of an exclusive club by participating. This relaxed and fun setting gave guests time to talk and to experience the participating superyachts, making the goal of KRSR a huge success. “We were very impressed with the inaugural Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous. It was a professionally organised event with an excellent social program and an impressive array of yachts joining the rendezvous. As well as launching the Asia charter season
At 93 metres, the MY Lauren L is the world’s 33rd largest superyacht. we are confident that the KRSR will become an important fixture on the international yachting calendar,” said Richard Lambert, Managing Director – Asia for Burgess. Chief Executive Richard Pope, General Manager Scot Toon, Infinite Luxury Director of Marketing Michael Nurbatlian plus other resort colleagues welcomed 250 esteemed guests, captains of industry and over a dozen superyacht owners. The opening party held at Kata Rocks was one of the most extravagant superyacht parties of 2016. Held at sunset with superyachts in the background, the party featured a stunning performance by the world flyboard champion in the foreground while Thai pop opera superstars Fivera delivered a soaring vocal performance. Day two saw the entire fleet leave Kata Rocks in formation to cruise along the island’s west coast to The Surin Phuket, where invited guests indulged in a gourmet beach barbecue. Invitees were absolutely thrilled to cruise on the majestic and largest superyacht attending the rendezvous, the 93m MY Lauren L, experience the modern design of the Pershing 92 or satisfy the need for speed on the swift Zeelander Z44 among others. The invitation-only Feadship Owner’s Dinner in a Kata Rocks Penthouse Sky Villa followed, with superyacht and Kata Rocks’ owner’s enjoying a lavish gala dinner, featuring a one of a kind culinary experience paired with fine wine and spirits. On the final day, invited guests were impressed during the lively ‘yacht hop’, moving around to experience the 51m Dunia Baru’s ancient Phinisi

The KRSR closing celebration was billed as the charter season opening event. It exceeded all expectations with many calling it Phuket’s “party of the year” and remained crowded into the early hours of the following morning. The KRSR executive committee said they were delighted to announce that the 2017 Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous will be held from 8 to 10 December. The outdoor dining sala and pool at Ani Villas on Koh Yao Noi.
Private resort demand booms Private resort Ani Villas is cultivating new ground in hospitality
The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th
W
hen Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul tweeted news about the surprise celebration vacation he’d planned for his wife’s 30th birthday in early December, the American celebrity media couldn’t post their own follow-up stories fast enough. All of a sudden Ani Villas on Koh Yao Noi was all over People, Instyle and Yahoo. “Absolutely stunning,” said the Daily Mail, picturing Ani Villas from on high. What Aaron Paul did for his wife’s birthday is what rising numbers of travellers the world over, celebrity and non-celebrity alike, are doing in recognition of birthdays and other milestone moments on the journey from cradle to grave. It used to be that people might splurge for a big destination wedding. But these days birthdays are edging out weddings as the reason people come together and rent out an entire resort. Which is what you get at Ani Villas, a private resort that books only one party on property at a time. Indeed, Bloomberg Pursuits in November ran a story that pointed out how more and more people wanted an entire resort for their own getaway. “Forget private villas,” Bloomberg said. Guests now want the entire resort to themselves. “Private resorts are a relatively new concept,” said Ani Villas CEO, Ira Bloom. “Until fairly recently, those who wanted the exclusivity of a private estate and all of the human resources of a hotel have been obliged to buy out an entire resort of say 50-plus rooms – limiting the option to royalty and titans of industry. “Our collection, including our 10-bedroom estate on Koh Yao Noi, delivers this same experience to a broader market – with greater value compared to taking 10 bedrooms at a five-star resort. Ani Villas are staffed with a dedicated general manager, an executive chef, spa therapist, bartender, housekeeping staff and grounds crew. Given the private resort’s design pedi@thephuketnews
gree, inspired settings and spare-noexpense budget on everything from marble to high-thread-count sheets, an apt comparison are Adrian Zecha’s Aman Resorts. But at Ani Villas, everyone knows your name, and you’ll know everyone’s name, too. In line with the “it’s all yours” slogan that the resort touts, stays at Ani Villas include all food, drink, spa and other on-site leisure pursuits from cooking classes and children’s arts and crafts to personal training and paddle boarding. Nightly rates with these inclusions start at US$4,000 (about B143,760) in low season for up to eight guests and rise to $16,000 (about B575,000) for 30 guests over the holidays. The private resort concept taps a growing trend among groups of people who want to vacation in company, though not with strangers. Ten years ago, the travel industry minted a phrase to describe the movement – togethering – and there’s been nothing but momentum ever since. One New York-based consultancy group earlier this year found that nearly half of the top one per cent of US travellers plan to vacation with friends, 41 per cent with kids and almost a third as part of a multi-generation party. Research released by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) this year shows that three of every four adults over 45 plan to observe a life milestone on holiday with friends. Tim Reynolds, a one-time Wall Street trader, founded Ani Villas in Anguilla in 2010 as a bold new move in the realm of hospitality, and as a complement to a philanthropic mission. For every private resort, there is an Ani Art Academy, an independent school that’s fully funded by the Tim Reynolds Foundation and that offers a free, comprehensive drawing and

painting program to communities surrounding each private resort, and at two additional locations in the United States. The Ani Art Academy on Koh Yao Noi opened in 2015 together with the private resort. Ani Villas also opened in Sri Lan-

Many appetisers incorporate molecular cooking techniques.

All meats from the grill come with four delicious signature sauces.
Fine steak is just the start at Plum Mark Knowles editor1@classactmedia.co.th

intense competition is driving Phuket’s dining scene to new levels. On it’s website Plum describes itself as “walking a tasty line between steakhouse and fine dining” and after eating there I have to say it’s not only walking that line, it’s dancing a graceful Tango on it. Executive Chef Francesco Greco – a gregarious Sardinian fascinated with molecular gastronomy – cuts no corners when it comes to sourcing and preparing some of the best steak in the world. This means there are several cuts of the finest pasture-fed black Angus from Australia and corn-fed USDA prime beef from America to choose from. But if you want to take your steak to the next level then there is no other choice but the Kobe cuisine pure Australian Wagyu beef. This 100 per cent grain-fed beef has a high marbling score and is farmed following the traditional Japanese method, making it incredibly tender, to the point you can literally cut it with a fork.
Enormous and fresh king prawns.
There is also a lamb or chicken option available and every piece of meat can be basted in one Chef Francesco’s six bastings. The evocatively named basting choices include “Sir James” (clarified butter, Scotch whiskey, honey and shallot) and “Connoisseur” (clarified butter, Dijon mustard, red wine, shallot and fresh sage) and impart a delicious flavour to the meat. All grill items are also served with a flight of four delicious sauces, plus a knob of Beurre Café De Paris, giving you a range of flavours to flirt with. All meats at Plum, and most of the seafood, are cooked in a special, imported Spanish brazier, the pride of Chef Francesco’s Kitchen. It’s like a charcoal grill, but inside a fully insulated enclosure and powered by natural, sustainable bamboo charcoal, which gives a delicate aroma with virtually no smoke. So as you would expect, the steak is to-die-for, but it is the other menu items that round out your meal and make dinner at Plum a truly memorable
fine-dining experience. From the complimentary amuse-bouche and bread basket with four types of handmade focaccia, to appetisers like roasted prawn with jalapeño and capsicum mousseline on pecan crumble and orange air, Chef Francesco delights in using his knowledge of molecular cooking to surprise your taste buds. Unlike some chefs, Francesco is also more than happy to explain his techniques to you. “I have no secrets,” he exclaims, when you ask him to explain the fine details a particular dish. So those with an interest in modern molecular cooking will find him more than happy to have a table-side chat about any aspect of his menu and its preparation. The personal attention given to each guest also marks Plum as a intimate and welcoming restaurant, you feel as if Chef Francesco has invited you to his home for dinner, but with the added bonus of spectacular ocean views from Cape Sienna’s high cliff-side perch.

S
undays are for sleeping in late, relaxing and spending time with your family, right? That’s exactly why the “Go Live” Sunday Brunch at Banyan Tree is the right place to go this, or any, Sunday. Starting at the sensible time of 12 noon, so you can still get that sleep in, you arrive at the reception area of Banyan Tree Phuket, hand your car keys to the valet, and step into the friendly atmosphere at one of Phuket’s most desired resorts. A short stroll down the stairs to Saffron Restaurant you are greeted with
smiles and cold towels and an array of food stations lining almost every available space of the air-conditioned dining area. Japanese sushi, pasta, imported cheese and cold cuts, crabs, oysters, mussels and the endless dessert selection bombard all of the senses. As we were sitting near the station, it wasn’t long before our plates had a small sampling of the desserts – don’t judge us, it was Sunday after all – so we could start on the sweet stuff. Venturing out of the air conditioning to the lakeside area, where the Jazz band was in full swing, the toes started to tap to the music and the smiles on our faces grew bigger once
we saw the barbecue lined up with Canadian lobsters, that were until recently still crawling around the plate, enormous king prawns, local fish, pork and beef skewers. Not to mention one of the best Thai noodle stations, corn on the cob and hot baked potatoes. Looking up from our plates from time to time, you see there are a number of local faces laughing and eating with family and friends, mixed in with the resort’s guests, proving that this brunch is not just for guests but a coming together of locals and visitors alike for the love of great food and truly a great reason to “Go Live” on a Sunday.

Phuket FC prepare for season FOOTBALL Continued from page 40 ...Details of the club and the 2017 season have been confirmed to The Phuket News by Lt Narong “Coach Noi” Ajarayut, now the sole person at the helm of the club and who recently met with The Phuket News to discuss the club’s present situation. Coach Noi was previously a player for Port FC, Bangkok FC and Police United, he was also a member of the Thai national football squad before converting to become a businessman with tourism businesses in Phuket and on Phi Phi Island. He was also coach for Phuket FC back in 2012 when the club was owned by fellow businessman Pramookpisitt Achariyachai. “The team is still under the management of Royal Raya Sport set up by Mr Pitipon ‘Champ’ Nukulpanitwipat, Director of the Raya group of hotels and Mr Chatchai ‘Boom’ Rojrungrangsi, Director of Royal Gems Pavilion,” Coach Noi told The Phuket News last week. “Champ and Boom formed Royal Raya Sport as they are passionate about football and want to put Phuket on the

The Thai Premier League (TPL) and League 1 are both set to start on February 14, 2017, and it is believed D2 will start at the same time. “But we have not received any official notification of the start date from the FAT yet,” Coach Noi said. “However, the club is registered to play in 2017 and have already been accepted.” When asked about the
club’s situation with regard to players, Coach Noi confirmed that he and his assistant, Niwat “Coach Jiwe” Nuisanga, have been working on forming the new squad. “There are eight or nine players that we have kept from last season, the rest of the squad will be new,” he said. “However, I don’t really want to speak too much about our team selection just yet as things may change before the season starts. “In addition, I have to make sure that our team selection fits in with our budget,” he added.
Asked what that budget would be, “The club will limit the budget to B1 million per month for staff, coaches and players,” he said. Last year there was a lot of speculation over major sponsors getting involved with the club, one that was talked about by many fans was the owners of English Premier league side Leicester City, King Power. However, Coach Noi was quick to put those rumours to rest. “Before the club can even think about getting a major sponsor onboard we have to

concentrate on forming a team that plays as a team, has unity and trains hard. Once we know that these things have been achieved I am sure we will receive offers from many sponsors who will want to support us,” he said. With season k ick- off now possibly being only two months away, as well as getting match fit, the players currently making up the squad will also have to get used to playing together as a team, and it won’t be that long until they get the chance to show what they are capable of as two pre-season friendly games have already been confirmed, both to be played against the same team. “The team won’t have any real competitive matches this year,” Coach Noi told The
Phuket News. “However, the players will need some game time before the 2017 season starts. “I can confirm that on January 20 and 26 Phuket FC will have friendly games against the Singapore U23 national team and that both of those games will be played at Surakul Stadium,” he added. Asked whether he had any message for the fans, whose numbers slowly dwindled as the 2016 season progressed, Coach Noi said, “Fans need to be patient and keep calm. It has not been and is not easy for us to form this team and I know that the fan’s expectations of us are high. “I want the fans to know that we are training as much as we can and we are concentrating on making the team stronger and better than last year. “I understand that the fans want to watch exciting football and I promise that we will do our best to bring exciting football back to Surakul Stadium and that will in turn bring the fans back,” he said. “If anyone thinks they have better ideas than the club’s management on how to run this club then I will have to accept that,” he added.

Hooking at night
Darker hours are the best time to catch FISHING
CAST AWAY Jimmy Stewart info@fishinginphuket.com
A
hoy me hear ties! Sailfish still seem to be out there in abundance, with last month’s competition winner “Fish Eagle” continuing to come back with “catch” flags flying a plenty. The secret at the moment seems to be, “come back in the dark”, as the Sails seem to want to start feeding just that wee bit later in the day. Oaarr! As it’s that time of year again I thought I would repeat an old yarn about a young Thai serving wench of my acquaintance. A few Christmases ago I was asked; “What are you giving me for Christmas?” To which I replied; “You’re a Buddhist. Bet you don’t even know what Christmas is.” To which she replied, “Yes it’s Jesus Christ’s birthday.” “Well done” says I, only to get the reply. “Yea, Santa Clause’s son.”
@thephuketnews
Although there are plenty of fish to be caught in day-light hours, Sailfish prefer to come to feed at night. A true pirate story: Two crew mates on shore leave, on the crest of a “big bender”, were sitting drinking at a bar on beach road in Patong about 20 metres from Bangla Rd when a tuk-tuk pulls up and shouts out touting for business. “How much to Bangla Rd,” they shouted back. “B200” came back a barked reply. “OK let’s go,” they said, and off they went.
A bit later at other end of Bangla and half way round the traffic system, they say “NO! We want the beach end,” To which the taxi makes a 90 degree turn into a 180 degree turn and ends up just short of the place the little crook started. “Just a bit further,” they asked and stopped exactly where they started. The “pirate” driver’s face was “priceless beyond belied”
as the guys paid and went back to finish their drinks, and the other customers in the bar burst into laughter having witnessed the whole proceedings. So, apart from the Sailfish (our 2nd best prize fish) being in abundance, for this time of year, fishing has been quite mediocre. Last month I theorised El Nino “fresh” surface water or even the super moon as possible reasons for these unusual changes in the pattern. So for all you “clever clogs” who “cast nasturtiums” at my powers of observation: Why’s it still raining half way through December? My latest theory is: It’s God’s tears of laughter at Americans trying to get their heads around democracy. Mock me – would ya! We discovered you lot, before you were even there. Cheers Guys. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Lang may yer lum reek an yer rods bend. Jimmy – fishinginphuket.com

Still the dominant force?
Will Mercedes’ silver arrows be in the driving seat come 2017? FORMULA ONE BOX OF NEUTRALS Michael Lamonato michael@boxofneutrals.com
T
hey say change is as good as a holiday, and while Formula One is experiencing both over the 2016–17 off-season, Mercedes could be forgiven for wanting neither. T he fa mou s Ger ma n marque has dominated the so-called V6 turbo hybrid era, spanning 2014 to now. The bedrock of its success has been its high-tech power unit, which leads the field even now, three years into development, around which an efficient chassis and bodywork package has been built. The formidable combination empowered rivals Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg to duke it out for the title amongst themselves in all three years, dropping just eight wins from a total of 59 grand prixs for an 84 per cent success rate.
Mercedes’ silver arrows have been the dominant force in Formula One for the past three seasons. Photo: Nelson Almeida/AFP Traditionally dominant teams become victims of the law of decreasing returns – development gains for teams that got it wrong are bigger, while a team on top has fewer avenues remaining to exploit – but in 2016 Mercedes’s rivals won one race fewer than in each of the previous years. The usual rules don’t apply to the silver arrows. It has been a credit to
perhaps the sport’s slickestever operation – even if thick wads of Mercedes-Benz cash has made money almost no object – that its stranglehold on the sport hasn’t been allowed to slacken after three gruelling seasons. Spearheaded by Toto Wolff, the team’s executive director, the 600-plus employees have raised the bar in a sport the brand bought into
only seven seasons ago, and though flashpoints between the Hamilton and Rosberg threatened to upset the delicate balance, Mercedes has navigated its way through this regulatory era, including F1’s longest-ever season in 2016, to perfection. But dominance will only ever satisfy one party, and as early as 2014, the first year of the new regulations,
Mercedes’s rivals agitated for sweeping changes to shortcut their way back into the game. The result is a wild aerodynamic overhaul for 2017 in a bid to curtail the runaway champions. Fatter tyres, sweeping front and rear wings, bigger diffusers – for the first time in the sport’s history the rules are changing in an attempt to make the cars faster, not slower, and paddock consensus puts Red Bull Racing and its aerodynamic mastermind Adrian Newey in the box seat to take the reins. But the story gets worse for Mercedes. As well as no longer operating in an environment that puts emphasis on its all-conquering engine, its new world champion, Nico Rosberg, has called time on his Formula One career, and technical boss Paddy Lowe is being lured away by the Williams team. After three seasons of serene stability, the 2017 season threatens to upend the order. “First of all you’re going to see a lot of excited drivers, I think, because we always
like to go faster and those cars are going to be super-fast,” said world champion Nico Rosberg, who nonetheless bowed out of the sport from the top. “Apart from that the ultimate goal was to try to shake up the grid a bit and to challenge our team – to make it difficult for Mercedes to continue the domination. Let’s see. It’ll be interesting to see what the hierarchy will be at the beginning of next season.” The new regulations offer the entire grid the opportunity to seize an early lead on the competition, and as they inevitably struggle to come to grips with their new creations, the resulting unpredictable action will prove a boon for F1 fans. But for Mercedes, after so successfully keeping all its balls in the air for three long years, 2017 presents only severe risk and little to in the way of reward. For one of Formula One’s most successful ever teams, change in 2017 is making for a very stressful holiday.

Chelsea have grit as well as glitter
Chelsea have played some dazzling football during the 11-game winning streak that has sent them clear at the top of the Premier League table, notably crushing Manchester United 4-0 and thrashing Everton 5-0 in a scintillating display last month. But their most recent victories have showcased a different side to their game as Antonio Conte’s side have recorded one-goal wins over Middlesbrough, Tottenham Hotspur, West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland and Crystal Palace. Last Saturday’s success at Palace, courtesy of Diego Costa’s 43rd-minute header, was their third 1-0 win in succession. Costa edged the visitors in front with Chelsea’s first effort on target and they would have won more comfortably had

Spirited Spurs still in hunt
Despite pushing Leicester hard in the Premier League title race last season, few pundits expect Tottenham to go one better and lift the trophy in May, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side showed they shouldn’t be r uled out of the running with a spirited 2-1 win over Burnley last Sunday. Despite the shock of Ashley Barnes’ 21st-minute opener at White Hart Lane, Tottenham equalised through Dele Alli soon after and laid siege to the visitors’ goal until England left-back Danny Rose smashed in the winner in the 71st minute. Age just a number for Ibrahimovic After a run of just one goal in 11 games, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has rediscovered his early-season goal-scoring form for Manchester United, netting for the ninth and 10th times in nine outings in their 2-0 win at West Bromwich Albion. Speaking before the game, the 35-year-old told BT Sport: “I feel like a 20-year-old boy.” Manager Jose Mourinho admitted
