New B450mn Provincial Hall reaches halfway mark CON STRU CTION OF THE new B4 50 million Phuket Provincial Hall reaching the halfway point was marked by a personal inspection of the site by Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada on June 10 . “ The main infrastructure is already finished,” said N atthawat Buaphut of the Phuket Provincial Public orks ce “ We still have the interior, landscaping and other stages to go, but we are sure this ro ect ill e finished on schedule by M ay 2 0 17 ,” he added. The contract to build the new seat of provincial government, located on Tha K raeng Rd, near Rama IX Park, was signed on September 9 , 2 0 14 . Choonieow Team Ruampa Ltd Part was hired as the main contractor and work
began immediately with a completion date of about three years. The site was chosen after the provincial government lost a drawn-out battle with local people who vehemently objected to the new complex being built on the tennis courts and oot all field on Surin Rd, close to the existing Provincial Hall, which is more than 10 0 years old, cram ed and ine cient ith no room to expand. The campaigners against the project, led by Suratin Liam-U dom, a former M ayor of Rassada, and Rangsan K ongthong, a former member of the Phuket Provincial Council, produced documents to show that the land was not originally state land, but land donated by the K ing for public use. Rear-Admiral Thaworn Charoendee, expert oceanographer at the N DWC, on M onday une confirmed that the national disaster agency was aware that the buoy, located about 1,10 0 km off the Andaman coast, has not been transmitting data for at least three months. “ We believe the battery on the buoy has died,” said R/ Adm Thaworn. “ We cannot replace it until the [ southwest] monsoon is over, in about N ovember. The seas are too rough right now, even for a large ship to recover the current buoy and replace it with a functioning one,” he said. At the time, experts noted that the buoy would have a usable life of about two years. “ The N DWC has only one [ deep-water] tsunami buoy in action at any one time,” R/ Adm Thaworn explained. “ We have a second one that we use when the one in the ocean needs repairs or maintenance.” Replacing the DART buoy with a functioning one will cost

But there is no cause for alarm, R/ Adm Thaworn noted. “ The N DWC works with other countries, such as India and Indonesia, which have their own buoys as part of a tsunami early-detection network ( the “ Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System” ) .
“ We have people monitoring the tsunami-warning system 2 4 hours a day. If an earthq uake strikes, we will assess and inform the relevant departments if the q uake has triggered a tsunami,” he said. Thailand is looking to install a new direct-detection tsunami-warning buoy, R/ Adm added. “ We will have another one about 2 0 0 km off M oo K oh Surin. Whale carcass stirs confusion, concern TH E R EM A I N S OF A decomposed whale carcass washed up on N aithon Beach Thursday last week ( June 16 ) , causing a wave of commotion among locals who had no idea what it was Apichar t Prateep, a member of Sakoo Tambon Administration Organisation ( O r B or Tor ) , at 9 am reported to K usoldharm Rescue Foundation that the carcass of an unidentified marine animal had been spotted by a local resident on N aithon Beach. He said that the area was overwhelmed by a rotting smell and he was afraid that if left the carcass would affect the marine environment and tourism. “ The animal had probably been dead for weeks, it resembles some type of giant fish or hale udging from its head and body,” M r Apichart said. By the next day, however, Dr K ongkiat K ittiwatthanawong, Chief of the M arine Endangered Species U nit at the Phuket M arine Biology

We will keep samples of the parts that were recovered for further examination, in the hope that we may confirm the cause o death age and sex of the whale,” he said. Dr K ongkiat noted that s erm hales ere rare finds along the Andaman coast, but added, “ Recently a calf was spotted south of Phuket.” “ U sually, sperm whales will search for food and stay very deep in the ocean, though our records show that 12 years ago, 16 sperm whales were recorded as seen in the Andaman region, and around that time eight were spotted near Phuket,” he said. Meth delisting ‘on ice’ Thorough study of ya bah needed before change, says FDA BANGKOK
T
he Food and Drug Administration ( FDA) is weighing public criticism of a proposal to take methamphetamine, or y a b ah, o the dangerous narcotics list, but still hopes to move away from crackdowns on the currently illicit drug in support of rehabilitation for addicts. Amid concerns the reclassification ill send the rong signal to the public, FDA secretary-general Boonchai Somboonsook said on Tuesday ( June 2 1) that while the idea is “ interesting” , a thorough study of the benefits of y a b ah is needed. He expected the delisting “ will not occur soon” . M any countries have been using methamphetamine in rehabilitation programmes for drug o enders ho are treated as patients. They provide meth to patients but gradually lower the amount until patients can give up taking meth, Dr Boonchai claimed. However, Thailand has

n offi ia from the oo an i i it r s ein e t at an used other methods, not meth, to cure patients. Dr Boonchai said rehabilitation programmes, carried out mainly by agencies in communities, are not successful as most patients relapse and take drugs again. One reason is atients are stuck in di cult surroundings which tempt them back into drugs. M ethamphetamine, known locally as y a b ah, is a type of

amphetamine stimulant which affects the central nervous system. M eth is often used as a major component of y a b ah. Removing meth from the illicit narcotics list does not mean it will not be under watch, Dr Boonchai said. Authorities must continue controlling its usage in a “ very, very strict manner” if the ro osal comes into e ect Dr Boonchai said.
It is known that meth has some beneficial q ualities, but like morphine, its use is currently not allowed unless doctors give permission, he said. The idea to remove meth from the list was proposed last week by Justice M inister Paiboon K oomchaya, who took his lead from the 2 0 16 U N General Assembly Special Session on Drugs.
Gen Paiboon introduced the proposal in the context that Thailand has been trying hard to crack down on drugs, including y a b ah, but has had little success as there are still many drug o enders The minister agreed with many countries that a new approach to the drug problem is needed as harsh measures against wrongdoing may not always be successful. Instead of eradication, he said, authorities may need to find ays to live ith drugs looking for methods to control them in a way that they do with incurable diseases. “ We need new measures to deal with drugs,” Dr Boonchai said, adding more than 7 0 per cent of drug convicts are now the addicts, not traders or producers. M eanwhile, the FDA is gearing up to incinerate 5,13 6 kilogrammes of drugs worth more than B10 billion, comprised largely of y a b ah pills, in Ayutthaya on the International Day against Drug use and llicit Tra cking on Sunday ( June 2 6 ) . Admitting her guilt
Unlicensed teen driver says she breached her probation conditions BANGKOK
T
he unlicensed teen driver who killed nine people in a crash on Don M uang tollway six years ago on Tuesday ( June 2 1) admitted that she had breached her probation conditions related to community service and sought permission to re-do it. Orachorn " Praewa" Thephasadin na Ayudhya told the Central Juvenile and Family Court judges that she had misunderstood Probation Department ( PD) regulations on the procedures and designated places for community service. She said she would be willing to start doing the 13 8 -hour community service again. Orachon, now 2 2 , reportedly performed 9 0 of the 13 8 community service hours at Phramongkutklao Hospital in January and February this year and claimed she only had 4 8 hours more to complete. But the PD said the 9 0 hours performed could not be counted because the hospital was not on its list of organisations
Orachorn ‘Praewa’ Thephasadin Na Ayudhya was photographed texting after she crashed her car into a commuter van, killing nine people. Photo: Bangkok Post where people on probation could do community service. Col N arat Sawetanant, the PD’ s director-general, said rachon had ailed to ulfil her probation conditions as she had not first discussed ith authorities where she would perform the social service and simply chose the place by
herself. He later brought the matter to the court although Col Peerapol Pokpong, deputy chief of Phramongkutklao os ital confirmed rachorn had performed community service at the hospital. Orachon pleaded guilty e ore three more P o cials were to testify against her in
the court. The judges ordered Orachon and the PD to negotiate and make a written agreement on where she would do the mandatory service. The location was not disclosed. Orachorn crashed a Honda Civic into the back of a passenger van carrying 14 , mostly
students and sta rom Thammasat U niversity’ s Rangsit campus on the tollway on Dec 2 7 , 2 0 10 . The impact caused the van to overturn and hit the barriers, unlatching the door. Eight people were sent hurtling down the streets below. Another one died later at a hospital while the others
were wounded. he as years old at the time. The minimum driving age in Thailand is 18 . She was charged with driving without a licence and reckless driving causing death and injury. She was eventually sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for four years. As a condition of her release, she was ordered to perform 4 8 hours of community service each year for three years, or 14 4 hours. Six of the 14 4 hours has been deducted because Orachon donated blood, which earned her six community service hours. Col N arat said in M arch that Orachon claimed she was afraid that she might be in danger if she performed community service elsewhere. When authorities alerted her family that she had failed to meet her probation condition, the amily etitioned the ce of the Ombudsman, accusing probation authorities of threatening her, he said. Prayut uses Section 44 to fight brawls BANGKOK STU DEN T V IOLEN CE BETween rival schools has become the latest target for Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha as the prime minister decided on Tuesday ( June 2 1) to exercise his special authority to try to clamp it down. The N ational Council for Peace and Order chairman signed an order by the special authority granted him under the interim charter to prevent future brawls. The order took e ect a ter it as u lished in the R oy al G az ette on Tuesday. It allowed authorities to detain students planning to fight their rival schools or no more than six hours before sending them to police, teachers or their parents. The parents will then be held accountable for future brawls as they will be req uired to put up some money with authorities as a guarantee for no more than two years. If their children commit violence again during the period, the money will be seiz ed and sent to the Child Protection Fund. U nder the new rules, students involved in a brawl leading to injuries will be put in jail for no more than six
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha decreed with his Section 44 powers that students like these caught brawling last November will suffer twice the cash and detention penalties – and their parents will have to put up money to keep them in school. Photo: Bangkok Post / file months and fined or both. The jail term will double and a fine ill increase to B10 0 ,0 0 0 if the brawl is fatal. Schools and police have tried to prevent brawls but violence among rival schools has showed no signs of abating. At least four major brawls took place this year, including the one on June 8 , when two students of Pathumthani Technological College were seriously injured after they were shot and stabbed by another group of vocational students believed to be from another college.
The M etropolitan Police Bureau has come up with an idea to launch a relationshipbuilding project for vocational school students in a bid to forge unity and reduce violence among them. The Education M inistry has mooted another plan to put them in a training camp to improve their behaviours. But Gen Prayut said in the order that all these measures did not work. The new rules were necessary as “ all legal measures cannot e ectively prevent and resolve brawls,” the order read. B angkok Post thephuketnews

Nepal’s female climbers break tradition by taking to the peaks NEPAL
W
hen a deadly avalanche hit M ount Everest just over a year ago, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita, one of the few N epali women with expertise in climbing the world’ s highest peaks, headed straight there to help. A gifted mountaineer who had summited Everest by the age of 2 2 , she is part of a new generation of Sherpa women who are climbing peaks that have traditionally only been scaled by their men. “ People think mountaineering is a man’ s job, but I think we need more women in the mountains,” the 3 1-year-old said. Generations of men from N epal’ s famed Sherpa community have climbed the Himalayas, while their wives and daughters have traditionally ke t the home fires urning But in a sign of changing times, a string of Sherpa women are now breaking records themselves, not only on 8 ,8 4 8 -metre high Everest but other dangerous peaks.

that killed almost 9 ,0 0 0 people, they have also led rescue and relie e orts “ Everyone told me to stay behind, they said Everest base camp is gone, but I had to go,” said Sherpa Akita, who was in a nearby village when the disaster hit. 500 liquor shops shut as Indian state goes dry INDIA FIV E HU N DRED LIQ U OR shops in India’ s southern state of Tamil N adu were ordered closed this week after its newly re-elected government pledged to ban alcohol to curb violence and other problems. The Tamil N adu government issued a statement ordering the closures as part of staggered plans to become the latest state in India to introduce prohibition. The statement said 50 0 TASM AN retail vending liq uor shops would be closed, referring to the government-run Tamil N adu State M arketing Corporation outlets. Operating hours of all others would be reduced. Chief M inister Jayalalithaa Jayaram and leaders of other political parties promised prohibition during campaigning in last month’ s state election. The pledge was popular with women voters, who blame alcohol for much of the state’ s domestic and sexual violence, and for depleting the income of poor families. @thephuketnews

Others point to a possible rise in the production of illegal and often deadly moonshine. The neighbouring southern state of K erala, which draws large numbers of tourists to its tea plantations, lagoons and lakes and sweeping coastline, started banning alcohol sales
in most hotels back in 2 0 14 . Sherpa Akita soon won a scholarship to train in the French Alps before returning to climb Everest. She also joined two Sherpa women and
together they ecame the first female team to summit K 2 , the world’ s second-highest mountain, in 2 0 14 . But her toughest test came when the 7 .8 -magnitude q uake ripped through her country on April 2 5 last year. Sherpa Akita lost a friend in the subseq uent Everest avalanche, her K athmandu home su ered damage and the sight of thousands of N epalis huddling under tarps for shelter broke her heart. Although Sherpa women have faced a long wait for their turn in the mountaineering spotlight, they are making up for it by snatching world records. In 2 0 12 , Chhurim Sherpa ecame the first oman to scale Everest twice in one week, while 4 2 -year-old Lhakpa Sherpa holds a record for the most
Everest summits by a woman, with six. The daughter of a yak herder, Lhakpa Sherpa worked as a porter and kitchen hand on trekking and mountaineering expeditions when she was young, before climbing solo. “ I felt free up there, I found ordinary life much more difficult she said re erring to a years-long violent relationship that saw her eventually retire from climbing. The mother-of-three is now preparing a comeback – 16 years after she first scaled Everest – determined to summit the mountain twice in a single season. Eventually, she wants to beat the record held by male climber Apa Sherpa of 2 1 total summits. Despite such feats, women say they continue to face an uphill battle in a male-dominated industry, including securing funding for their expeditions. They have made 3 3 attempts to scale Everest, compared to 2 ,9 2 3 bids by Sherpa men, according to the authoritative Himalayan Database. A F P

Water, like finding gold Three years of drought takes severe toll on Nicaragua NICARAGUA
N
icaragua may boast a southern lake that is Central America’ s biggest body of freshwater, but in the centre of the country years of drought have taken a severe toll. “ This is like looking for gold,” Pedro M embreno, a 55-year-old resident said as he dug into the rocky earth near the town of Teustepe, one of 3 3 communities in a parched corridor. His hole was already 15 metres deep, and still there was no water. He and hundreds of other rural dwellers are desperately searching for aq uifers, underground layers of water in permeable rock. But many have simply dried up under the drought that has dragged on for three years now. N icaragua’ s central region has witnessed an absence of rain and temperatures hovering around 3 6 to 3 9 degrees centigrade. Conditions worsened further over the past year with El N iñ o, the cyclical climatic
Conditions in central Nicaragua have worsened further over the past year with El Nino, the i a imati henomenon that arms the eastern a ifi heatin an r ing out much of Central America. Photo: Inti Ocon/AFP phenomenon that warms the eastern Pacific heating u and drying out much of Central America. The change accelerates deforestation and prompts farmers to divert scarce water for their crops. The result has been despair for the towns of Teustepe, Ciudad Dario, Las Banderas, San Francisco Libre and Tipitapam, stretching from the centre to the north of the country, one of the poorest in the Americas.
Their towns lie in arid fields among ald hills here plants have shrivelled, and dry riverbeds. Women and children can be seen walking along the roads with empty containers, looking for water. Despite the apocalyptic scenes, and worried protests that have sprung up in some outlying suburbs of the capital M anagua to the west, environmentalists say there is no danger of the entire country
going thirsty. Still, said Denis M elendez , a coordinator for an environmental umbrella group called the N ational Platform for Risk M anagement, the drought was having a sharp impact. “ We knew that the climatic phenomenon was going to severely a ect us That as clear But this prolongation of nearly three years has exacerbated the situation,” he said. “ In the hand-dug wells, people are saying the water is
much deeper than before, that they have to go further down or the waters have receded like in the big lakes.” ilvia Luna confirmed the worry felt by many. She was bathing and washing clothes with other women and children in a meagre waterhole located between boulders, a couple of hundred metres from her home. “ Sometimes the waterhole is dry and we wait for water to come out for us to do our chores,” she said. The drought has a ected parts of the economy, notably agriculture and fishing “ In the countryside people no longer want to farm – it’ s no longer attractive for those people because they have lost genetic material, the soil is degraded,” explained M elendez . “ The hope is that, after El N ino, we’ ll see La N iñ a,” a di erent henomenon that usually brings heavy rains, he added. The capital M anagua should have a u er against the drought because it sits on Lake X olotlan. But Oscar V ilchez , a 55-year-old fisherman who
lives on its banks, said: “ There are no fish They have all gone deeper inside.” In Ciudad Dario, 6 0 kilometres north of M anagua, one resident, M aura Centeno, said fish ere dying in hat as a local lagoon. “ It’ s a puddle now,” she said. While El N iñ o was getting much of the rap for the extended drought, some experts noted it wasn’ t solely responsible. “ We are doing things to make the impact dramatically worse. We are seeing a direct relationship between the deforestation, the drying up of the well and the rivers, and the level of underground water,” said Rosario Saenz , an ecologist with the Foundation for N icaraguan Development. “ In the Pacific dry z one they are continuing to strip forests and there is no policy for reforestation. We have asked for them to declare a forest moratorium in rural areas,” he said. Although there are no official figures environmental groups estimate that 8 0 ,0 0 0 hectares of forest are lost each year. A F P

ing 7 6 murders, more than anywhere else in Africa. Y et U kerewe Island is relatively untouched by this phenomenon. “ There were times when I was afraid in the past, but now I thank God because we can sleep at night without a gun,” says Y akobo, who works as a fishmonger in kere e market. “ Here, we are safe, we are surrounded by water, no one can commit a crime and escape easily,” said Y akobo, who has three wives but regrets that not one of his 11 children is albino. “ We could talk, and I would feel like I had passed on a part of myself.” Over the years, U kerewe has become known as a haven for people with albinism. People say that it started long ago when families would abandon their albino relatives on the island, believing their unusual, ghostly appearance was the sign of a curse. They survived and thrived and others, ostracised by society, made their way there too. “ In many respects, U kerewe is at the forefront of integration of albinos in society. And I think the fact that it’ s an

According to the U kerewe Albino Society ( U AS) there are 7 5 people with albinism living on the island of 2 0 0 ,0 0 0 , a proportion roughly in keeping with the national average. As elsewhere in Tanz ania, body-snatchers have come to the island to dig albino corpses from their graves and in 2 0 0 7 one person was attacked and had his white hair cut for use in witchcraft, says V icky N tetema, director of the Tanz anian branch of U TSS. “ But we have never had an

Calling all wedding planners Phuket steals bouquet to host 2017 global wedding congress The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th
P
huket will host the 4 th Annual Destination Wedding Planners Congress 2 0 17 ( DWP Congress 2 0 17 ) in M ay next year in a move that is expected to place Phuket, and Thailand, centre stage in the global wedding industry. The Tourism Authority of Thailand ( TAT) and Dubaibased Q N A International signed an agreement on June 15, recognising Thailand as the host of the DWP Congress 2 0 17 . The event is scheduled to be held at the Banyan Tree from M ay 2 -4 , and is expected to attract 4 50 delegates from around the world. TAT Governor Y uthasak Supasorn said, “ We are delighted that Thailand has been chosen as the host country for the prestigious Destination Wedding Planners Congress 2 0 17 . Thailand is a highly attractive country for couples looking to get married or enjoy honeymoons, and we can boast a wide range of wedding packages, romantic settings and luxurious, private accommodation. In addition, Thailand’ s own wedding planners have great expertise in helping couples enjoy memorable and romantic nuptials.” DWP Congress is an avant-

The spectacular congress has raised the bar of the destination wedding industry, as the crè me de la crè me across the globe from the wedding industry converges under one platform. The first P ongress took place in Greece in 2 0 14 , and has grown from strength to strength spreading its wings to M auritius in 2 0 15, and Florence, Italy, this year. And amidst a plethora of exclusive destinations from across Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australasia, and Europe, Thailand’ s bid for the 2 0 17
edition emerged victorious, even relegating Southeast Asian tourism rival Bali to bridesmaid, not the bride. M r Ackash Jain, Director of Q N A International said, “ Thailand has been a very strong contender; the country is already very popular among travellers and leisure seekers, and is also on the radar as a coveted destination for weddings and honeymoons. Given, the country’ s reputation as a destination with deep-rooted cultural traditions, rich heritage and warm hospitality, we are extremely excited to get the ball rolling on the 4 th edition of this event.’ ’
According to a survey conducted by Q N A International, results of which were released during the 3 rd annual DWPC, Thailand was the top destination of choice in Asia for destination weddings and honeymoons. This is no surprise given Thailand’ s cultural lure, natural beauty including scenic stretches of beaches, mountains, greenery, uniq ue gastronomy, entertainment, and world renowned hospitality, it was revealed at the signing on June 15. “ The experience in destination weddings and honeymoons that Thailand has acq uired through attract-
ing couples in Asia include various wedding ceremonies whether it is by the beach, rock-climbing wedding, underwater wedding, traditional Thai wedding, and cooperation with luxury resorts and hotels, wedding planners, event organisers, and professional photographers, to o er com etitive ackages for the couples. Therefore, Thailand is well-poised to welcome couples who want a memorable and exclusive experience for their wedding and their guests,” said Q N A International’ s press statement. M r Y uthasak concluded, “ Weddings can raise a great deal of revenue for Thailand. The average spend for a wedding is around B5-2 0 million, depending on how many guests attend. It is estimated that 4 0 0 couples come from India alone to be married in Thailand, with Europe and the U S also being strong markets. “ The hosting of the DWP Congress 2 0 17 will certainly hel raise the rofile o Thailand even further as a preferred wedding destination for couples from around the world and boost the positive image of Thailand, positioning the country as a q uality leisure destination.” N anya Tanthapaiboon of Phuket-based professional wedding planners The Wed-
ding Bliss Thailand said that Phuket hosting the event was a boon to the industry – and to the island as a whole. “ Phuket is a special place, even among other regions in Asia,” she said. “ Couples come from around the world – Europe, Hong K ong, Singapore and other main Asian cities – to be married in Phuket. N o other place in Asia compares on so many levels,” she said. “ This will put Phuket on map for all these organisers, and Phuket ill enefit greatly just from the weddings that will be held here because of the exposure given through this event, not to mention all the events that might come later as a result of all these high-end people, including special representatives from major hotels around the world, visiting Phuket and seeing the facilities available here firsthand And hosting the crè me de la crè me in the wedding game is no mean feat, M s Tanthapaiboon pointed out. “ Wedding planners have exceptional standards, and the people who will attend the 2 0 17 congress will be among the best in the world. “ Everything must be perfect – the food, the venue, everything must be just right and run exactly on time,” she noted.

The survey also found that foreign tourists were less satisfied ith their visits to Thailand, mainly due to poor transport services. Thai tourism operators and local tourists shared the same view, M r Ittirith said.
Foreign tourists wanted lower fares, more domestic ights etter local trans ort transport alternatives like passenger boats, better q uality destinations and a better standard of service. Down-time rainy day yoga Kim White k im@min db ody y og asy stem.com
I
t is usually around this time of year – the raining season – that I like to share with you a “lazy” yoga asana. It is during these “downtime” months, due to the relentless rain and the often, nonwaterproof mode of transport for most being a scooter, that there can be long periods of waiting and sitting around. This is a perfect opportunity to stretch, but I get that the rainy weather can also bring on a more relaxed, snoozy state of mind, so I figure why not combine both into a lazy stretch. Let me introduce this month’s snoozy stretch: Supta Madhyasana. Supta meaning ‘recline’ in San-
skrit and madhyama meaning ‘middle’ – reclining waist pose. The back is the main motor of our body and when it starts to tighten up and loose movement, the rest of the body will surely follow suit. In order for us to be moving at our maximum potential, you can consider this posture a greasing of the spine. Not only is it a great posture for your back, but it also gives you an opportunity to rest the mind and relax into a nice rhythm, watching your breath and quietening the mind. Listed below are some more benefits of practising this pose: •Releases the tension in the lower back •Opens tight shoulders and the chest •Elongates the big groups of muscles on each side of the spine •Improves digestion •Massages the internal organs •Quiets the mind •Opens the hips and IT line of the legs. Please follow these steps to practise Supta Madhyasana: 1. Lie flat on back. Arms are parallel to the shoulders, palms facing down. 2. Inhale to bring a straight left leg out to the left side the body, on another inhale bring right leg across the body and stack the right leg on top of left leg. Be mindful to keep both legs straight.
Beginners, you may find it difficult to bring your legs up high, start at an angle where you can manage to have both legs on top of each other (see photo one). 3. Play with how ‘high’ you can bring the feet toward the left hand. (The higher the legs go, the higher the twist goes up your spine (see photo two). 4. The head will look back at the right hand as you extend your feet to the left. Look over at the right hand and try to keep the right shoulder grounded. 5. Hold this posture for a minute or more – inhale to release from the asana and repeat on the other side. Be safe in this weather. Olli, a 3D-printed, self-driving minibus, to hit the road
A
new maker of self-driving vehicles burst onto the scene Thursday last week (June 16) in partnership with IBM’s supercomputer platform Watson, and it’s ready to roll right now. The vehicle – a 3D-printed minibus called “Olli” capable of carrying 12 people – was unveiled by Arizona-based startup Local Motors outside the US capital city Washington. Olli was designed as an on-demand
transportation solution that passengers can summon with a mobile app, like Uber rides. And it can be “printed” to specification in “micro factories” in a matter of hours. Olli will be demonstrated in National Harbor, Maryland, over the next few months with additional trials expected in Las Vegas and Miami. Local Motors is also in talks to test the vehicles in dozens of cities around the world includ-

Even though Google and several automakers see several years of testing before deploying autonomous cars, Local Motors co-founder and chief executive John Rogers said this vehicle is ready to go into service as soon as regulations allow it. n June 17, Kajonkiet International School held its annual student art exhibition, where students exhibited sculptures, drawings, paintings and more to the delight of peers, parents and teachers. The Phuket News took a walk around, and sat down with a few of the teachers and some of the students to find out more. Ms Ledwick of the KIS Art Department explained that the exhibition featured selected works from some secondary students – Keystage 3 and 4 – in addition to sculptures from all the school’s primary students. “I personally selected and kept the best secondary students’ art throughout the year for the exhibition, to complement the primary students sculptures,” she noted. Keystage 2 Phase leader Ms Carter says that it was a good decision to integrate art from the whole school. “It gave students a chance to see and compare art from their peers and you could really see the development the older you get,” she said. about their reflections. Helene, a Year Four student, explained that her class had focused on three types of sculpting medium for the past six weeks: papier mâché, steel wire and plaster of Paris. It was the first time Helene learned about sculpting with steel wire and plaster of Paris, but not papier mâché. “Making the moulds for plaster of Paris was rather difficult and took lots of patience,” she said, adding that her class used playdough to make the moulds. Asked which medium she was most fond of, she replied papier mâché, showing me her latest work, “Sisi”. “I made this for my dog, who passed away recently. He was very old and got cancer,” she revealed. Indeed, sculpting proved to be an effective and positive way for Helene to channel her pain and grief. Year Six Dylan agreed that patience is needed to do superb art. “Art is not as easy as I thought it would be. It never goes the way you think it will in your mind,” he said, showing me his replicated computer. “I was inspired to make this because I’ve had so much fun and learned so much on the computer this year, especially on this program

eadStart International School held their end-of--year show for 2016 on June 16-17. The school holds a different show every year, previously performed at the Simon Star theatre in Phuket Town. This year the show was Ali Baba and The Bongo Bandits, performed at the school. Tickets for both shows were sold out to an audience filled with parents, students and supportive family members, who, judging from the raucous applause and laughter, enjoyed the performance thoroughly. With a storyline very similar to Disney’s Aladdin, the plot revolves around hilariously-named characters (“Sultan Pepper”, anyone?), tongue-in-cheek lines and ensemble choreography that altogether made for a cheery performance. Mrs Erika Cramp, head of Creative Arts at Headstart School, explained that there more than 200 students were involved in the show – most of them in Years 3 to 6, and “a handful of Year 2s.” “Every year, our end-of-year show keeps growing bigger and bigger. This is our first year to perform our show in our own theatre,” she remarked. @thephuketnews
“I just hope the kids go out there and really enjoy themselves,” she concluded. The entire cast of approximately 200 students kept up an enthusiasm that made the play enjoyable for the audience, highlighting the ridiculousness of the plot and the outlandishly-named characters. Regina Lee, who took the lead role of Princess Satsuma, jokingly commented: “I walked around the school acting like a princess for the past two months to prepare for my role.” A support staff of more than 90 people were involved in making the show become reality, all working to their fullest. The students who performed in the show also worked just as hard, and their hard work was apparent from the first show on the 16th. “The students all performed very well – they managed to stick to their lines no matter what. Even when they were having slight problems with the position of their mics, they still spoke their lines very loudly and clearly for the audience to hear,” stated Bunyapaun Phungkuson, a Year 11 student at HeadStart who watched the show. Indeed, not only is art effective at channeling emotion, but a great way to express inspiration as well. Another unique feature of his project was the use of recycled materials. His exhibit included two cereal boxes, a bit of cardboard and two big ice cream sticks. Year Five students Claudia, Valeria, Chaoying and Lily showed me their gigantic papier mâché models of fruit, including a banana, pineapple, durian and grapes. “These fruits are going to be used as props in the school play, The Jungle Book, on June 25,” explained Claudia and Lily in sync. Valeria echoed her peers on the value of patience in the process. “Not only patience, but carefulness too. If things don’t go how you meant, you

Beyond the pink of dragon fruit
H
ealth experts claim that a bite of this wildly nutritious tropical superfood can deliver a cornucopia of benefits for the huthe natives man body. Dragon fruit, or kaew mangkon in Thai, is easy to spot in local Thai marSupatra Sutham tran slate@classactmedia.co.th kets due to its beauteous pink colour and a rather eerie outer appearance. Dragon fruit is a pitahaya, which is the fruit of several cactus species in the genus of Hylocereus that are originally native to Mexico. Hylocereus blooms only at night; the large white aromatic flowers of the typical cactus flower shape are among those called “moonflower” or “queen of the night”. Sweet pitahayas have a creamy pulp and a gentle aroma. It is also grown as an ornamental plant, used in gardens as a flowering vine and a house plant indoors for decoration purposes. The flower is certainly alluring and intriguing to look at. The fruit’s texture is sometimes likened to that of the kiwi fruit because of its black, crunchy seeds and soft juicy texture. The flesh, which is eaten uncooked, is mildly sweet and low in calories, and eaten together with the seeds, which give a nutty taste but are indigestible unless chewed. Dragon fruit can be either sweet or sour, depending on the species. Not only is it rich in vitamin C, but also a rich source of fatty acids – so replenish your body and feed it the plentiful benefits of this tropical superfood. You can buy dragon fruit, which mostly comes from central provinces of the Kingdom, from fruit trucks or at local markets across the island.

Thailand, Freeland Foundation rally against illegal wildlife trade
T
hai celebrities and wildlife advocates recently joined A-list celebrities from around the world to rally citizen support against the illegal yet lucrative wildlife trade. Messages from four Thai celebrities – Kong Saharat, Lotter Pattarapol, Noona Nuengthida, and Dr. Thon Thamrongnawasawat – to spur action to
protect endangered species, alongside global Supermodel, Gisele Bundchen, actor Ian Somerhalder, Nikki Reed, Li Bingbing and footballer Yaya Toure, were featured in a World Environment Day (WED) exhibition on June 5 in Bangkok, with a theme of “Go Wild for Life” “Most ivory comes from the illegal poaching of elephants, killed for their tusks to produce ivory products. Killing elephants for ivory ornaments or jewelry seems so senseless and is such a loss for all of us. . Stop buying, and the killing stops,” said Thai superstar Kong Saharat, an outspoken advocate for Thailand’s national animal, the elephant. The theme for WED 2016 focused on the escalating crisis of wildlife crimes which seriously threatens iconic species, with some populations on the brink of extinction. Today illegal wildlife trade is estimated to be worth US$50-150 billion per year, with forest crime and illegal logging estimated to be between US$30–100 billion annually. “Wildlife and forest crime deprives countries of billions of dollars’ worth of resources, which are cornered by organized international cartels, damages and destroys ecosystems, increasing public health risks, and increases poverty. The urgency to tackle illegal wildlife trade should be a high priority,” said Isabelle Louis, Acting
Thai Customs officials with seized illegal elephant tusks. Regional Director of the United Nations Environment Programme. Countries in Asia-Pacific are a major source, destination and transit points for illegal trade in wildlife. Much of the ivory taken from nearly 25,000 elephants each year is destined for the region. Items made from elephant ivory, tiger parts and derivatives, and rhino horn make their way to Laos and on to markets in China and Vietnam. “Scientists are forging new links between the natural world and the animals that live there, which also serves as a defense against climate change,” said Steven Galster, Executive Director and Founder of Freeland. “There is now scientific proof that animals play an important role in dispers-
ing certain tree species that help cut down carbon emissions. As these animals are poached, the forests’ ability to soak up and store carbon is compromised.” The WED Commemoration was organized by UNEP with Freeland, the Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Ltd., the Bangkok Cultural Centre, Roongaroon School and Thammasart University. Meanwhile, The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment is planning to continue its campaign to raise awareness of the issues by hosting a belated WED 2016 event on June 29 at the Royal Paragon Hall in Siam Paragon shopping complex, under the theme “Go Wild for Wildlife”. – Freeland Foundation thephuketnews

Salsa dancing at La Bodega.
The rhythm of food and salsa
Fulfilling the island’s void JP Mestanza tv @classactmedia.co.th
I
t would be generous to say that Phuket has a few salsa joints that house the movements and sounds of Latin music. There are more salsa dancers on this island than venues to “cut a rug” and show off playful footwork. Fortunately, “Salsa Night” at La Bodega in Jungceylon has become a must for any “salsero” looking to dance. La Bodega happens to be a Spanish tapas restaurant with food that is also a must and it’s become quite the institution for a salsa lover’s night out. A typical “Salsa Night” at La Bodega includes three things: food, drink, and dance. Hablas Español? Even better! As you arrive with your party, make sure to grab a seat by the wall inside, it’s great for watching the dancers and keeps you enthralled in the scene around you. Here are a few dishes to try with your salsa group…. Phuket is a seafood haven, after all, and what better dish to start out with than Gambas a la Plancha – shrimp flambéed in garlic, chilli and white wine sauce served with parsley! The big pieces of shrimp will wet any appetite for the main courses. The Gambas is a favourite for any meal at La Bodega, especially with a group since it’s small enough to keep you wanting more, but incredibly tasty to get your palate excited for what’s to come! Salsa means sauce in Spanish, and what better way to pay homage than with a delectable Choriqueso pork loin in jalapeño and tomato sauce? The pork loin is stuffed with chorizo pork sausage and cheese, which oozes out as you dive your knife into the meat. The sauce has a slight kick, but it’s flavour is a great mix of jalapeño and tomato that perfectly goes with the pan-fried potatoes on the side. The highly-recommended Steak on a Stone @thephuketnews
was up next and it did not disappoint! It’s a dish that comes with french fries and a litany of sauces. The showstopper is the 200-gramme fillet steak that is really filling. While perfect for dinner, it’s also great for “Salsa Night” if you’re looking to check out the dancers, kick back, and eat. Our Steak on a Stone was ordered rare and went beautifully with the sauces, particularly the chimichurri sauce, redolent with finely-chopped parsley and minced garlic. It’s the type of dish for that person in your group whose dances come few and far between, but loves to enjoy the Latin atmosphere, toasting the night away with new friends. Got a vegetarian in your group? No problem! The Greek salad is a great choice for someone looking for flavour without being weighed down. Dancers, this one is for you as it’s light and tasty. After the meal, it’s dancing time! Plenty of partners on the dance floor with options of salsa, bachata and other music to keep things interesting at La Bodega. With “Salsa Night”, Patong has more than a few options!

Ready for Europe’s best FOOTBALL
Matt Pond editor3@classactmedia.co.th
T
he U 16 boys and girls sq uads from the BISP Cr u z ei ro Football Academy at British International School, Phuket ( BISP) will next week take part in what many see as one of the most important world youth football tournaments on the planet. M ore than 3 0 0 teams from countries have confirmed their participation in the Iber Cup Estoril 2 0 16 , being held in Estoril, Portugal from June 2 9 to July 3 . Some of the big names taking part include Paris Saint-Germain ( PSG) and Olympiq ue Lyonnais from France, Spanish sides Sevilla, Deportivo la Coruñ a and Real Betis, home team Sporting Lisbon, and English Championship clubs Blackburn Rovers and Reading. The Phuket News recently caught up with BISP Cruz eiro Football Academy Head Coach onathas andido to find out more about the tournament, and what it means for the players taking part. “ This is an amaz ing opportunity for our players, and
Both girls and boys U16 teams will be competing in the Iber Cup Estoril 2016. we are really looking forward to taking part in the competition,” said Coach Jonathas. “ The Iber Cup is the eq uivalent of a World Cup for youth club teams, so it is really important that we have a team there representing the BISP Cruz eiro Football Academy.” While the age groups at the competition range from U 9 to U 16 , BISP Cruz eiro is only sending its U 16 boys and girls sides. “ This sq uad has now been training together for two years and I truly believe that they will be the best team to represent our academy,” explained Coach Jonathas. “ We will see
how it goes this year, and depending how we do we might take more teams in 2 0 17 .” This is the first time P Cruz eiro has taken part in the competition, says Coach Jonathas, pointing out that you cannot simply apply to join the Iber Cup, you have to be invited. “ We went to Spain with our U 13 boys last year and did very well,” he said. “ After seeing us perform on tour, we then received our invitation to join the Iber Cup Estoril 2 0 16 ,” he said. When asked what he hopes the Phuket teams can achieve in the tournament, Coach
Jonathas said, “ We know that the standard and level of football will be really good, but we just want to show all the things we have done in preparation for entering such a big competition. “ Of course we would like to win or do well, but more than that we want to expose our players to a high level of football that they don’ t really get to play often in Phuket,” he added. But it won’ t only be Coach Jonathas who his players will be looking to impress – scouts from many of Europe’ s top clubs will also be keeping their eye on the up-and coming youngsters. “ This is a great chance for players who wish to become professional to be picked up by a big name club,” said Coach Jonathas. When asked if there were
any stand-out players in his sq uad, Coach Jonathas didn’ t reveal any names, but said, “ We do have some outstanding talent in both our boys and girls sq uads – and some that we believe can make it all the way to a professional level.” But to impress the watching scouts, the BISP Cruz eiro layers ill no have to first go through some rigorous playing time. “ In the early stages the teams will only play one 4 0 minute game a day, but when it
comes to the latter stages they will be playing two or three 6 0 minute games a day,” said Coach Jonathas. BISP Cruz eiro Football Academy Director and U 16 Girls Coach Richard Stockings added, “ As we approach the start of the Iber Cup, I feel very excited for our teams and all the coaches and parents. This is our first visit to an 11-aside tournament as an academy, and gives the girls’ an opportunity to see how they are doing against other strong opponents. Having the chance to play against the likes o enfica and tletico M adrid will be an amaz ing experience. “ Our goals are to compete and show the work we have done over the past three years. If we give a good account of ourselves then we will be invited back to future tournaments. “ With scouts and other coaches present I feel we have the q uality over the coming years to give our female players the very best opportunities to progress their football at a high level. Good luck to everyone involved.”
The Phuket News wishes both the BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy U16 boys and girls teams great success in the tournament. 30 years on from ‘Hand of God’
Diego Maradona capped off a sensational run to score Argentina’s second against England in Mexico in 1986. Photo: AFP
FOOTBALL
I
t was a day to live in footballing infamy, a day when the two contrasting sides of Diego M aradona were displayed to the world in the space of four breathtaking minutes at M exico City’ s Az teca Stadium. Thirty years after M aradona’ s “ Hand of God” goal against England at the 19 8 6 orld u and the magnificent solo e ort hich ollo ed it – the controversy continues to resonate like no other. Argentina' s 2 -1 victory over England in front of 115,0 0 0 fans on June 2 2 , 19 8 6 is remembered entirely for the two moments from M aradona which would ultimately settle a contest simmering with political overtones. Four years earlier, Britain and Argentina had fought a bitter conflict in the South Atlantic over the Falkland Islands, which ended in defeat for the South American nation' s military junta. For M aradona, who would go on to lead Argentina to
@thephuketnews
victory in the tournament, the Falklands dispute loomed large in his thoughts before the uarter final “ It was like beating a country, not a football team. Although we said before the game that football had nothing to do with the war, we knew that a lot of Argentine kids had died there, that they had mowed us down like little birds,” wrote M aradona in his 2 0 0 0 autobiography ‘ I Am El Diego’ . “ This was our revenge. We all said beforehand that we shouldn’ t mix the two things but that was a lie. A lie! We didn’ t think of anything except that, like hell it was going to be just another game! ” The t o defining incidents from M aradona would ensure that the contest would never be remembered as ‘ just another game’ . The first came in the st minute, when after patient Argentinian approach play, England’ s Steve Hodge attempted a risky lofted back pass to goalkeeper Peter Shilton on the edge of the area.
M aradona, who had continued his advance into the penalty area, leapt high to challenge the much taller Shilton and punched the ball into the net before racing away to celebrate. England’ s players protested, signalling to referee Ali Bin N asser of Tunisia that M aradona had used his hand, but the goal stood. “ I was waiting for my teammates to embrace me, and no-one came... I told them, ‘ Come hug me, or the referee isn’ t going to allow it,’ ” M aradona would say later. In the post-match press conference, M aradona teased reporters with his version of what had happened, attributing the goal to “ a little with the head of M aradona and a little with the hand of God” . There was no debate about M aradona’ s second goal, however, which is often cited as the greatest goal in the history of the World Cup. Gathering the ball in his own half, M aradona accelerated away on a 6 0 -yard run that took him past Peter Beardsley,
Peter Reid, Terry Butcher and Terry en ick e ore he finally stroked home the finish Former England striker ary Lineker ho finished as winner of the Golden Boot at the 19 8 6 tournament with six goals, described M aradona’ s virtuoso e ort as the est goal he ever saw. “ What can I say about M aradona? The man is a football genius,” Lineker said. “ His solo effort against us was the one and only time in my whole career I felt like applauding the opposition scoring a goal. He showed some amaz ing individual skill.” For most English-speaking viewers, M aradona’ s second goal was memorable for the succinct piece of television commentary which accompanied it, from the BBC’ s Barry Davies: “ Y ou have to say that’ s magnificent M eanwhile, in the Spanishspeaking world, the commentary best associated with the goal, from U ruguayan journalist V ictor Hugo M orales, has become part of the folklore of the match.
“ Genius! Genius! Genius! There, there, there, there, there, there! Goaaaaaaaal! Goaaaaaaal! I want to cry, oh holy God, long live football! What a goal! ,” M orales exclaimed. “ M aradona, in a memo-
rable run, in the best play of all times! Little cosmic comet, which planet did you come from, to leave so many Englishmen behind, so that the country becomes a clenched fist crying or rgentina A F P
