New Nemo Dolphinarium in Chalong sparks heated discussion over animal rights

A
new, almost complete building that will house a dolphin show in Soi Parlai, Chalong, has become the centre of controversy in Phuket, with international ecowarriors Sea Shepherd calling for the show to be stopped before it starts, and for a social media campaign to make this happen.
Meanwhile, the company behind the project has said that education and treating autistic children are its main focus. It also seems likely the project will go ahead despite the fuss. Dolphinariums, properly set up, are legal in almost every country in the world, and Thailand is no exception. There are at least three others in the country, in Bangkok, Pattaya and Chantaburi.
Provided the facility has been set up properly and the paperwork is all in order, officials are legally obliged to issue the required permits. The large, circular, blue Nemo Dolphinarium was being fitted out with seats the day The Phuket News visited it last week. Fans and lights are already fitted around the auditorium and the circular pool was being filled with trucked-in sea water. A large mural facing the main

entrance shows a tall ship in full sail against a backdrop that might be Phang Nga Bay. The reporters spoke on the phone with a man who gave his name only as Vladimir. Speaking in Russian, he said that he was not yet ready to say when the building would open, or even what it would be used for. Asked whether animals would be involved, he said – after a long pause – “You will see later.”

Almost complete: Inside the Nemo Dolphinarium near the zoo in Soi Parlai, Chalong
THE DOLPHIN DEBATE Continued from page 1 Sichon Meanglean, Acting Director of Engineering at Chalong Municipality, said, “They started building at the beginning of this year. It is supposed to be finished in two months. “They have followed all the processes to erect a legal entertainment building. We have checked and approved everything already.” The Phuket News has confirmed that an application has been made to the local Fisheries office, which has been passed on to Bangkok. Sea Shepherd has already written an open letter to the “Phuket Tourism Board” (presumably the Tourism Authority of Thailand) and the Fisheries Department. “Stop The Nemo Dolphinarium”, also posted on Facebook, urges people to “sign” an online vote against it. Ths petition has already passed 10,000 votes. Some local academics have also backed the call to stop the show, or at least test public opinion. A source close to the Direc-
tor of the Fisheries Department in Bangkok told The Phuket News that there are several steps remaining before the dolphin show is legitimate. “If they [the company] have all the proper permits to build and they have a proper business plan set in place, they [the Fisheries Department] will have to allow the approval. “However, the next step after that is requesting imports of animals. This step includes another committee to determine the appropriateness of the facility and consideration of the animal’s welfare.” Given that the dolphinarium venture involves Nerum Co of the Ukraine, which has already built dozens of such facilities, it seems likely that they will pass that test, too. After initially declining to give any details to The Phuket News last week, the sole registered director of Nerum Phuket Co Ltd, the Thai company behind the show, finally gave their position following the latest social media outcry. “We don’t want to give a response to the opposition.
Some people have different views about dolphins. Our focus is on education and dolphin therapy has proven to be effective for [treating] autistic children – that’s our main purpose. The dolphin show is just an addition [to the therapy/education element].” The director, asking not to be named, declined to provide details about where the dolphins will come from. She also declined to go into detail about the relationship between Nerum Phuket and the Ukranians. “I have nothing more to say until all the processes are complete,” she said. Not all local comment has been negative. Local tour operator Maksim Kurtov, who runs the Treasure Island tour company, told The Phuket News, “I know the people from Ukraine are professionals and have great experience in making dolphin shows around the world. “I think it will be an essential [tourism] product.” What do you think of the dolphinarium? ompletion of the B834 million underpass project at the Samkong intersection, next to Tesco-Lotus on the bypass road is expected to be delayed by about two months after the contractors found a drain underneath, which they weren’t aware of. The one-kilometre-long drain runs along the east side of the road, starting just south of Tesco. Project Engineering, Chalermpol Wongkiattikun of Department of Highways in Bangkok, told The Phuket News that the drain came as a surprise. “After we found the drain we had to stop digging on the south side of the intersection. “I have already requested the Phuket Provincial Waterworks Authority to have the

year, rather than the original scheduled finish date of June 25, 2015. Apart from this, he said, the project is going well. “We have already completed building the water drains for the underpass.” He said that the contractors will repair roads around the project, which have been damaged by excavation and the movement of heavy machinery.
Beach drive is misguided: poll A TOTAL OF 3,843 PEOPLE VOTED IN THE Phuket News poll on the Army-backed great beach clean-up. We asked, “Beach vendors: What is your view on the crackdown?” The results will surprise those who have been at the front line of reclaiming public land from private entrepreneurs, and those who have been cheering them on. A big majority – 57 per cent – felt the crack-down was misguided, while most of the remaining votes – 38 per cent – felt quite
the opposite, and applauded the demolitions. Here are the results: I unreservedly approve of the recent crackdown on beach vendors. 1,452 (38%) I approve, with reservations, such as the need for compensation for vendors. 45 (1%) Vendors should be allowed, but at select beaches only, and on a case-by-case basis. 163 (4%) Tourists need these services. Huge changes proposed for Phuket’s taxi and tuk-tuk Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
W
ith the Army backing them, transport officials in Phuket are moving to make radical changes to the way taxis, tuktuks and minibuses operate on Phuket. If they get their way, the surly groups of taxis and tuktuks waiting for fares and haggling for the highest possible amount, and the multitude of exclusive taxi territories dotted around the island will be a thing of the past. Instead, all taxis will have meters and will be obliged to use them, resulting in a situation more like that in Bangkok. Teerayut Prasertpol, Chief the Provincial Land Transport Office (PLTO) told The Phuket News last Friday (July 18), “I have already sent a list of standard meter taxi fares to the [National Council of Peace and Order – NCPO]. “The first two kilometers will cost passengers B50, three to 12 kilometers will cost B12
per km, distances beyond that will be charged at B10/km.” “The vehicles used must be no more than six years old, and must have engine capacities of at least 1,500cc.” Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Muang airport will be examples for Phuket International Airport to follow when it comes to taxi organisation. All meter taxi drivers who want to operate from the airport must initially register with the airport, giving such information as name, address, age, gender, photo, and details of the vehicle. As at the Bangkok airports, taxis would arrive and join a queue to wait for passengers. Passengers would go to a taxi desk, state their destination and be given a slip to hand to the first driver in the queue. This part of the plan has yet to receive agreement from the Phuket International Airport management, but it has been pointed out that the airport car park is a public area – technically a “special” area, but still public – so for the airport it
Future of Phuket’s roads? Meter taxis on the streets of Bangkok. Photo: Christian Haugen may be legally difficult to block the entry of hundreds of meter taxis. “We will talk with Phuket International Airport about taxis in the coming week,” Mr Teerayut said. Under the plan, the PLTO would also open up the system to allow illegal “black plate” taxis to become legitimate – though not as green-plate “limousines”.
As for the green-plate vehicles, at the airport no changes will be made. But other green-plate vehicles must been registered as being affiliated with a hotel or a tour company. The PLTO aims to cap the number of green-plates at current levels. This is to push drivers towards driving meter taxis rather than “limousines”, Jaturong Kaewkasi, the PLTO’s Chief
Adviser, explained. “If all black-plate taxis could become meter taxis that would be good for Phuket.” Another part of the plan is to tackle the tuk-tuk mess. The PLTO has in the past tried to limit the number of tuk-tuks but the rules have been constantly broken. Currently, there is a huge underground market for yellow tuk-tuk plates, which can sell
for a million baht or more, depending on demand. But if the PLTO plan goes through, the plates will be nontransferable, which should more or less collapse the market. If any driver wants to stop driving a tuk-tuk (for example, to upgrade to a meter taxi) he or she must return the registration to the PLTO. Minibuses are also to brought into line. There are currently just 20 minibuses on Phuket registered with yellow plates but, Mr Jaturong said, “More then 100 illegal minibuses operate on the island, none of which have registered their details with us. “We will open up registration to them to allow them to become legitimate.” There is no deadline for this. But nor will there be any mercy. Mr Teerayut explained, “Drivers of any black-plate [tuk-tuk, minibus or taxi] we catch will be charged under Section 23 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act.” Penalties for offenders can be as high as five years in jail.

Australian tourist found dead in hotel An Australian tourist was found dead in his hotel room in Chalong on Sunday afternoon (July 20), apparently the victim of a chronic health problem. Staff at the Happy Cottage Phuket on Soi Ta-ied found Adam Arthur Sahyoun, 31, dead, lying face-down on the floor at about 4:45pm, and called police. Mr Sahyoun arrived in Phuket on July 5 and was due to fly home on August 5. He was estimated to weigh about 200 kilos, and medication and syringes found in the room indicated he was suffering from hyperinsulinemia, a condition closely linked with obesity that can lead to cardiovascular disease. Land Dept denies dragging its feet F
ollowing a recent announcement by the deputy chief of the NCPO that land papers for 89 parcels of land infringing on the Sirinart Marine National Park can be cancelled immediately, the Land Department has moved to counter accusations that it has been dragging its feet on cooperation with the investigation into massive encroachment into the park. At a meeting at Provincial Hall, Thammasak Chana, national deputy director-general of the Land Department explained to Governor Maitri Inthusut, “Land Department officials are not – as the media have suggested – indifferent to this problem.” The problem, he said, was that the Land Department had not received sufficient evidence to warrant cancellation of land papers for land alleged to be in the park, nor had it received any official request to do so. As an example, he cited three plots in Sakoo subdistrict, totalling about 290 rai. All three appear to be in the park yet the “owners” – Nakorn Wongsithong, Anoma Fangsen and Chan Pongpa – had applied for freehold Chanote papers in 2010. Mr Thammasak said, “The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) objected

be “precisely located”. Of these, 14 cases are already in the hands of the Department of Special Investigation. These are the sites of the abandoned Phuket Peninsula Resort & Spa, Central & City Development (part of West Sands), land held by Landstate, land held by Suchada Sangsuwan, the Andaman White Beach Resort, Suree Samrit (Malaiwana development), Pavilion Beach Resort, La Colline Project, Layan Beach Resort, Three Dolphins (Trisara), Phuket Arcadia (Pullman Resort), a private home owned by a foreigner, Malaiwana Hills and the Istana development. “But the fact is that the Land Department is in the process of checking all the plots that are alleged to be in Sirinat National Park. “We have heard from the National Anti-Corruption Commission that if they were to be sold today, the price for all of them combined would be about B1 billion. “If that is the case, then, [if we are requested to] we have to restrain any approvals. “But we have not received any official request yet. If the Land Department does get such a request, then the plots will be considered [for cancellation] for sure.” Suthicha Sirirat

n an indication of the size of Phuket’s meth consumption, a drug courier was caught in Rawai on Monday (July 21) in possession of a kilo of crystal methamphetamine (ya ice) with a street value of about B2.3 million. This was just one consignment; Sang “Daeng” Sompak, 30, admitted he was making pickups four or five days a week, sometimes as often as three times a day, though not all were such large consignments. Police explained that, following a tip-off, officers had been shadowing Daeng for a month. Once they were sure he was involved in the drug trade they obtained a search warrant for his home. On Monday they waited for him for three hours and when he arrived at last, they pounced, searching his home and finding the kilo of ya ice. Under questioning Daeng denied the drugs were his, saying that he was only the courier. He explained that he

The money would be in the parcel when he collected it. He explained that he had been a speedboat driver but was now unemployed and had
family problems, so when a friend suggested this new line of work it seemed like a good way to solve his money woes. Investigators are now looking for the dealer.
JUST OVER TWO WEEKS ago police sealed a safe in the office of Wanchai Saetan, boss of the Karon Municipality’s Engineering and Planning Office, wrapping it with several rolls of duct tape. On Thursday last week (July 17) Wanchai – who is one of the accused in the ongoing investigation into mafia taxi activities and money laundering in KataKaron – finally arrived with the keys. It has been a long wait for police to find out what was in the box. Watched by high-ranking police, Navy and Army officers, Wanchai was told by Chanchai Pongpasson of the Anti-Money Laundering Office to open the safe. Wanchai spun the combination lock, then turned the key. The safe did not open. He tried again, with the same result. Finally, after five minutes of tension, on the third attempt, the safe opened. It was completely empty. Even a small locked drawer inside the safe was empty. A faint smile flitted across Wanchai’s face. Pol Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin, who is leading the investigation into mafia taxi activities in Phuket, also smiled. He told a municipal staffer to write down what had happened so that all present could sign it as a true record. Turning to The Phuket News, he said, “We will carry on [with the investigation].” M r C ha nchai, t oo, seemed undaunted by the lack of any evidence in the safe. “We’ll keep working,” he said. thephuketnews

Three dead in 3-vehicle mayhem in Krabi Town AN ACCIDENT INVOLVing two pick-up trucks and a bus in Krabi on July 16 killed three people, including a pregnant woman. Rescue services arrived at the scene in front of the Makro Supermarket in Krabi Town at about 8.30pm to find a heavily damaged Mazda pickup in the middle of the road. Fifty metres away, also in the middle of the road, was a crumpled Nissan pick-up truck. Sticking out from a smashed-up food shop at the side of the road was the back end of a large bus that runs on a scheduled route between Haad Yai and Phuket. All three people in the Mazda were severely injured and all died on the way to hospital. Ten more people were hospitalised. Witnesses told police the Mazda slowed down to make a U-turn, possibly heading for the Makro supermarket. The Nissan, following behind, rear-ended the Mazda, ramming it into the path of the bus, which hit it and then veered off into the shop.

ACTING ON INFORMATION REceived, police, including officers from Region 8 in Surat Thani, and forest rangers raided a site in the Kamala hills on July 17. There they found a wooden house surrounded by the stumps of trees. The encroachers appeared to have left in a hurry; the officers were able to seize piles of timber, some sawn into planks, along with chain saws and hand saws,
ropes and pulleys and tins of gasoline. They also seized a small-calibre hunting rifle with 15 bullets, registered to a Rungrote Kwanyuen. Officers will now locate him and bring him in for questioning. It is not yet clear whether this was an illegal logging operation or if someone had been clearing trees around the house to create a personal hunting lodge. Eakkapop Thontub

en restaurants on Sai Kaew Beach, at the north end of Mai Khao Beach, which their owners claim have been there for over 40 years, were demolished on July 24 by Sirinat Marine National Park officers and other officials, assisted by 150 army troops.
The 10 restaurants occupied about 15 rai of land belonging to the Treasury Department, along the edge of the Sai Kaew Beach. Jirasak Chookwamdee, head of Protected Areas Regional Office 5, said, “There are a total of four beaches in Sirinat Park that have been encroached on – Sai Kaew, Mai Khao, Nai Yang and Nai Thon. Sai Kaew is the last one
to be cleared up. “We are going to plant sea pines [casuarinas] and trees that can live with sea water, to make the beach look the way before [the restaurants were there]. “We are going to do this on August 10 to honour HM Queen Sirikit, who graciously gave her name to the national park.” [August 12 is Mother’s Day, Her Majesty’s birthday].
Sai Kaew Beach is an important beach in Phuket and is located in Sirinat National Park, which is connected to Mai Khao Beach. 15 rai of the land was encroached by ten people. In 2007, the Treasury Department reported the encroachers and finally received the court’s authority to demolish the illegal premises and take back the land.

Somkiet Yimpong, Engineering Manager of the Department of Highways in Phuket, who is overseeing the project, told The Phuket News, “The construction is going well. It’s about about 80 per cent complete.” The finish date will now be late November or early December, he said.
He explained that the project had been delayed partly by a problem of underground water supply pipes that had to be moved, but also by the recent heavy rain. From the Central Festival bridge the project looks almost ready but Mr Somkiet explained, “Power has to be installed, along with warning lights, fire extinguishing equipment and CCTV cameras.” The contract continues into the new year because, even when the underpass is complete, the contractors must still repair all the damage to the roads around the project.
THE PHUKET YACHT CENtre (PYC) was officially opened on July 24 by Governor Maitri Inthusut and Paiboon Upatising, president of the Provincial Administration Organisation (OrBorJor), which owns Chalong Pier, home to the new centre. Others present included representatives of the Harbour Department, the Customs Department, Immigration, Phuket Disease Control Office, the Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet and a number of the island’s honorary consuls. Mr Paiboon said, “The OrBorJor opened Chalong Pier back in 2002. The Harbour Department and the Ministry of Transportation helped fund the PYC building. Yacht skippers can register online, he said, adding, “The PYC is here to serve all yachts. It will also act as a system to prevent any illegal yachts from entering Thai waters.” Gov Maitri said, “We want to put the One Stop Service at the hub of Thailand’s tourist attractions, making it the most popular yacht centre and boosting international tourism.” A PYC official told The Phuket News, “The PYC is responsible for collecting all the details of yachts that arrive into Phuket. This is mainly because so many yachts used to come into Phuket illegally, because of the old manual system. “This will not be possible now that the new computerised system has been put into place. “We also cooperate with the Marine Police and the Navy. This new security system will be able to check any yacht that comes into the Phuket area. Any yacht skipper who does not register will be prosecuted.” Skippers can book an appointment before arriving in Phuket by visiting http://yacht. phuket.go.th/pyccs/index.php

he former Crown Prince of Nepal is in trouble again in Thailand. Paras Shah, was arraigned on July 15 on charges of marijuana possession following his arrest last week at a Bangkok hotel. Shah has a reputation for trouble back home and this was not his first scrape with Thai law. As reported in The Phuket News, he was arrested on the island in November 2012 on the same charge. He was sentenced to a month’s drug rehabilitation in Bang Jo jail, but missed out on that when he was rearrested days later on a charge of criminal damage, after smashing up a hotel room in Bangkok. The Phuket News learned that he had done the same to a villa on the island but that his deposit on the villa had covered the cost of repairs so the case was dropped. Shah has been in Thailand since suffering his sec-

Dolphin shows are a thing of the past
T
he furore brewing over the possibility of a dolphin show being set up in Chalong’s Soi Parlai is growing. While the details are still murky at present, if suspicions about the almostcompleted structure are spoton, the parties behind the project will only see objections and protests escalate. In most of the world, dolphin shows are thankfully becoming a thing of the past – as well they should be, given the greater knowledge we have about these wonderful mammals and how they live and thrive in their natural habitat. There are some, however, who remain unaware of the ethical and zoological objections to holding dolphins in captivity. In light of the looming disgrace in Chalong, these objections are worth reiterating. Dolphins can and often do travel over 100 kilometres a day in their territory, hunting

and playing, but obviously can’t do that in a small concrete tanks. And they are highly intelligent, yet in captivity they live miserable confined lives performing the same boring tricks day after day. The capture of dolphins is a brutalizing experience which, scientific research has conclusively shown, has a devastating impact on the family group left behind. And even though captive dolphins are kept in an environment free of predators and other threats, they die prematurely because the mental, emotional and physical stress that these creatures endure weakens their immune systems. Worse, when not performing, captive dolphins are often kept in holding tanks smaller than show pools. Confining animals together in such unnaturally close proximity results in tremendous stress
that often finds an outlet in aggression against other dolphins. We have no right to imprison these amazing creatures for our “entertainment”. Captive dolphin shows have nothing to do with education or conservation, despite the ludicrous claims of show owners. They are all about making money – at the expense of the well-being of some of the most intelligent and sensitive animals on our shared planet. Simply put, dolphin shows are wrong. Indeed, they are an untenable disgrace. There are a few tour operators here in Thailand who take visitors out to sea to see these creatures in their natural habitat, happy and unthreatened. It is our hope that demand leads to a rise in the number of such eco-responsible tour operators, and a decline – right down to zero – in the number of on-land dolphin shows the world over, including in Chalong.

Civilian fatalities in Deep South deplored W omen’s groups and peace activists in the Deep South have called on insurgents to stop attacks on civilians and urged authorities to provide better security and justice for residents. They made the demands yesterday at a seminar entitled “Breaking the Wall of Silence: Saving the Life of Children and Women”. Nualkhae Sae Lim, 56, said police have yet to identify the insurgents who set her 29-year-old daughter on fire on the afternoon of Feb 12. “I’ve been praying that Nong Ning should be the last victim of this undeserved violence. But she is not. Only two months after the incident, teachers and administrative officials were killed. “Had the perpetrators been arrested, there would have been no more victims of the violence from my neighbourhood,” said Ms Nualkhae, a primary school teacher in Pattani’s Panare district. Her daughter worked at Bangkok Bank and was killed

There were witnesses to the attack who chose not to get involved. “At least two motorists saw her on fire and heard her scream for help, but they sped away from the scene, fearing for their lives. I understand that. Who wouldn’t do the same? “I want this violence to stop now. I want to meet the
people behind that vicious act and ask them why they had to do such a thing, why they found it so easy to kill an innocent young woman,” Ms Nualkhae said. According to the Duayjai Group and Cross Cultural Foundation report, 32 females aged between two and 62 were killed and another 60 were injured in the first seven months of the year.
New ivory trade laws to be passed THE DEPARTMENT OF National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has drafted two regulations to strictly control the domestic ivory trade for the National Council for Peace and Order to announce as law. The move is an attempt to escape an international ban on the country’s wild flora and fauna trade. The department was forced to act after the standing committee of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) criticised Thailand’s Ivory Action Plan.

The Cites committee said at its meeting earlier this month in Switzerland that the plan lacked substantial measures to control the quantity
of ivory stocks in shops and the failure to regulate markets that sell ivory from African and Asian elephants. Currently, the law allows the legal sale of items made from ivory sourced from Thai domesticated elephants, which leads to the sale of ivory from African elephants as well as wild Asian elephants. Niphon Chotiban, chief of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, yesterday spelt out details of the department’s comprehensive plan. Bangkok Post
From January, 2004 until October, 2013, 62 children were killed and 374 injured in the deep South conflict. Former Pattani senator Anusart Suwannamongkol said most victims were decent family people who had nothing to do with the political conflict. “Any innocent person could easily fall victim to the brutal killings. Why should they be sitting ducks for such violence?” Mr Anusart posed. Angkhana Neelapaijit, chairwoman of the Working Group for Justice and Peace, said victims included farmers, bosses, wives of police officers, pregnant women, disabled women and workers. These victims suffered many acts of violence. Some were shot dead, many others were tortured or set alight or beheaded. “These acts are considered evil under the teachings of Islam, but when will they stop? We would like to see justice, not just financial remedies,” said Ms Angkhana, who noted that most of the victims were Buddhists. Bangkok Post

Villagers seeking dam assurances
Some cent ral Bangkok streets will close for public entertainment and reconciliation activities this week. The Traffic Police announced the closure of Ratchadamri and Rama I roads is set for late Wednesday night (July 23) to early Saturday for the Tourism Authority of Thailand to organise the “Thailand Happiness Street Festival.” From 11pm on July 23 to 2pm on July 25, the closure is on two lanes of Ratchadamri Road close to the Central World shopping centre between Ratchaprasong and Pratunam intersections and three lanes of Rama I Road next to Wat Pathum Wanaram between Ratchaprasong and Chaloem Phao. July 22-27 will see a reconciliation festival take place on Sanam Luang grounds, and stalls will occupy Na Phra That Road from the Phra Chan intersection to the intersection between Na Phra That Road and Na Phra Lan Road. One-way traffic will be imposed in its vicinity.
People of 17 villages in Mae Suai sub-district of Mae Suai district in Chiang Rai province are living in fear after cracks appeared in a local dam – and aftershocks continue after a big earthquake that struck the province two months ago. The aftershocks following the 6.3-magnitude quake in Phan district of Chiang Rai on May 7 prompted representatives of villagers in Mae Suai sub-district to inspect the Mae Suai dam, because they live just downstream from it. Local residents fear the dam may burst because since Thailand’s biggest recorded earthquake on May 5, the dam shows cracks on its spillway structures. Mae Suai district chief Narathip Ph romph r uek led villagers’ representatives to the dam. Irrigation officials at the dam told them the dam tilted slightly, but remained in a safe position, and that the cracks might have actually been caused simply by water pressure. Bangkok Post

Clans’ blood-feud erupts violently in Turkish city TURKISH AUTHORITIES on Monday (July 21) imposed a curfew in the southeastern city of Hakkari after violent clashes blamed on a feud between two Kurdish families left one person dead. The quarrel between the Pinyanisi and Ertosi clans had turned violent the previous day after hundreds of people got involved, attacking each other with knives and stones in the streets of the town of some 80,000 close to the borders with Iran and Iraq, media reports said. Mustafa Er, a 49-year-old father of nine, was killed in the ensuing shootout while three people from his family were injured, local media reported. The Hakkari governor’s office declared an open-ended curfew after security forces –
who fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowd – failed to stop the violence. As of Monday afternoon, the curfew was still in place and the authorities said it would stay in force until further notice. Video footage showed families with children scurrying for sanctuary in shops and restaurants, some of which were damaged in the clashes. Dozens of paramilitary troops were deployed to prevent any reprisals and all public buildings were closed. Clan feuds are frequent in Turkey’s Kurdish-majority southeast, where guns are traditionally seen as a legitimate way to resolve disputes and preserve honour. Some clans in the southeast include hundreds of thousands of members. AFP
China domestic abuse victims left voiceless
T
he beatings began a month after the wedding, she says. For more than two years the kicking, pushing and slapping continued, as Ma Shuyun’s husband – who had wanted a son – abused not only his wife but also their baby daughter. Late one night, after Ma sought help from Beijing police, her husband – helped by her mother-in-law – wrapped her in a duvet, sat on top of her and choked her until she began to lose consciousness. Afterwards police detained not Ma’s husband but her older brother, who had rushed to save his sister, fighting off her assailant. “They didn’t arrest my husband, because they thought my injuries weren’t serious enough,” said the 36-year-old. “They thought it was just a marital dispute.” Ma’s husband is now seeking a divorce, custody of their daughter and monthly child
Photo: Dani Rodrigue support payments of 1,500 yuan (B7,687) from her. A court rejected her own lawsuit against him for lack of evidence, and her brother has been in prison for the past eight months. The story is commonplace in China, where domestic violence is estimated to occur in a quarter of families and authorities are reluctant to intervene in what they deem a “private” matter, according to Hou Zhiming, a veteran women’s rights advocate who has counselled Ma. Almost 20 years ago Beijing hosted a World Conference on Women that laid out a plan for women’s rights across the globe. But China itself remains without a national domestic violence law, and now the country’s Anti-Domestic Violence Network (ADVN), its first and largest umbrella group on the raging nationwide issue, has announced its own surprise dissolution.
“It will have a detrimental impact, because when it comes to professional anti-domestic violence work nationwide, of course the more power we have, the better,” said Hou, whose Beijing-based Maple Women’s Psychological Counselling Centre was one of the ADVN’s 72 members. Less than two decades ago, physical abuse was not even acceptable as grounds for divorce in China. Then, in 2001, the marriage law was amended to ban domestic violence for the first time. But while attitudes have changed, abuse still takes place in 24.7 per cent of Chinese families, according to the All China Women’s Federation. But current laws do not define domestic violence, so that many victims – if they report abuse at all – are shuffled from police to neighbourhood committee, with authorities reluctant to intervene unless serious injury is involved. Indian police arrested a school principal on Monday (July 21) after a video showing him allegedly thrashing three blind children with a cane was posted on the internet. Police said the principal and a teacher were arrested in the southern city of Kakinada amid public outrage. The video showed three children at a boarding school, the Greenfield Residential School for the Blind in Kakinada, in Andhra Pradesh state, cowering, wailing and begging their attacker to stop hitting them. The fuzzy video footage appears to show the principal holding the little boys down one by one and whacking them with a cane as they crouched and begged for mercy.

Victims of Bosnian War buried two decades on THOUSANDS GATHERED on Sunday (July 20) for a final farewell to 284 people killed in Bosnia’s 1992-1995 war, after their remains were exhumed from one of the largest mass graves found in the country. “I hope it will be easier now,” said 48-year-old Suad Tatarevic, who came to bury some 40 family members lost to the mass killing, including his father and six brothers. “At least I know where their graves are and can come to pray for them,” he said as he knelt before the coffins of his loved ones, lined up with hundreds of others on a local playing field. Tatarevic managed to flee when his father and brothers

were killed on July 22, 1992, in their village of Zecovi. His family were executed by Bosnian Serb forces as part of a campaign of ethnic cleansing. Their bodies were among hundreds dumped in a huge mass grave found last year in a disused mine in the northwestern village of Tomasica. Most of those killed were men, but they also included three women and a dozen teenagers aged 13 to 17. outh Sudanese rebels launched an offensive to retake a key town near the border with Ethiopia on Sunday (July 20) in what the United Nations said was a violation of a truce agreement. “This attack represents the most serious resumption of hostilities” since President Salva Kiir and his former deputy, rebel leader Riek Machar, met in May and recommitted to a January ceasefire, the UN mission said. The fighters loyal to Machar struck Nasir, their former headquarters, located roughly 500 kilometres north of Juba, which was retaken by government forces in May. UNMISS, the UN mission, laid the blame for the renewed fighting squarely on Machar’s forces. “The attack is a clear violation of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement,” it said. But a spokesman for Machar’s forces, Lul Kuang, defended their moves as an act of “self-defence” after what he described as several government attempts to arrest their military commander. “The fall of Nasir now

South Sudanese army spokesman Philip Aguer denied Nasir had fallen, describing fighting as “still ongoing”. Only days earlier, mediators had pressed the rival sides
to resume peace talks being held in Ethiopia. Those talks, moderated by the East African bloc IGAD, are designed to lead to a transitional government but have yielded little progress so far. “It is deplorable that this major attack comes at a time when intensive efforts are under way by mediators of the Intergovernmental Authority

THE ORIGIN OF SPECIE Gold is common – it’s just a question of getting at it
S
cientists and spiritual leaders alike agree that everything on earth came from the heavens (or Heaven, depending on your point of view). If, indeed, every atom and molecule making up the world around us was once part of the much greater universe, then that malleable yellow metal we call gold is no exception. Our 24-carat subject today has been prized for millennia because, unlike so much in our disposable world, gold cannot be created or destroyed; it does not react to air, oxygen, water or simple acids. It is, in fact, imperishable. Alas, in today’s quest for instant gratification, people rarely think about what they are buying, or how much engineering, design or labour went into making it. And while people may spare a thought for the purity of gold or the design quality of the jewelry, nearly every person I know has no idea where it came from. Regrettably, they are not even the least bit curious to
learn that the gold they so happily adorn themselves with has a history older than the Earth itself, and is literally at the core of this planet on which we live. Gold has been an integral part of human life for thousands of years, having been used as money, tableware, art and jewelry. People even pay good money to have gold pins, rings and studs pushed into their ears, eyebrows, lips and private parts. That is your prerogative, my dear readers, but today we are going to melt down the studs, urns, rings and coins, and ask ourselves where that hypnotic metal came from. Where has it been? Where else in the wide reaches of the universe is it
Golden Bonobo? No – a gold death mask from more than 2,000 years ago, found in Colombia. Photo: Andreas Praefcke found? And, with apologies to Darwin, what is the origin of that historically valuable specie? To answer that, we once again gaze to the heavens. Around 13 billion years ago, the first explosions rippled across outer space, and began creating the planets we are
familiar with today. That Big Bang spewed an array of solid matter (including gold), which eventually combined to form the planets in our solar system (and others). Vast amounts of gold helped to form the one we now call Earth, but because of its high density and the Earth’s gravitational pull this gold sank deep into the core of the planet. It is estimated that, if we could extract it, this gold would coat the entire earth in a golden crust nearly two feet think. “So where is this gold now?” I hear you say. Well, it’s still there, waiting patiently at the centre of the Earth – pretty much the same place it was 4.5 billion years ago when
our solar system was formed. I can hear your mental adding machines calculating how much all that gold would be worth at today’s prices? Answer: more than B30,000,000,000,000,000,000 (that is, if you ignore the fact that flooding the market with so much gold would make it essentially worthless.) The more intriguing question is really this: can the gold at the earth’s core be mined? Not now. Our current drilling capabilities fall far short of the 2,890 km required to reach the molten outer core (or the 5,150 km to reach the solid inner core). The deepest mine in the world to date is South Africa’s Tau Tona mine (just shy of 4 km). The deepest bore holes ever drilled were in Russia and Qatar, and while these went down more than 12km, the pressure and heat encountered at this depth caused the holes to naturally close up. Maybe future inhabitants of Earth will find a way to mine the earth’s deeper recesses, but not any time soon. The gold currently being mined is precious because it is not plentiful, but the reason it is accessible (and did not “sink” to the core) is because it was not here when the earth was formed. It was delivered by asteroids around 600 million years after the earth’s formation. And the meteor shower that rained gold down onto the surface of the planet lasted
over 200 million years. It is this gold, found on or near the surface, that was first taken from the soil over 4 billion years later by a species that evolved to populate the world. This species, of which you are one, ingeniously found ways to extract it, refine it and fashion it into artifacts and jewelry, which they have used to adorn their homes and their bodies for at least 7,000 years. Because of its permanent nature, the gold mined over the last 7,000 years is still around today, and although it could change hands and/or form hundreds of times over the next 50,000 years, the same gold will still be here then. If all the gold on earth originated in outer space, how much gold is really out there? Well, other planets in our solar system are thought to house vast quantities of gold, and it is estimated that our sun alone contains enough gold to create an asteroid nearly 1,000km in diameter. By one estimate there is one atom of gold for every 200 billion atoms of hydrogen in the universe. If that figure is accurate, the total mass of gold in the universe would be equal to 66 trillion of our suns. That’s an awful lot of gold!! But rather than the laws of nature, it is the law of supply and demand that sees gold viewed as a store of value. And it is precisely because there is a finite quantity of gold that can be located and extracted that it has long been used as specie (or currency). There is doubtless a vast quantity of gold in the universe, but finding it and mining it are not that easy. So as humanity explores space over the next few thousand years, one thing is certain: if man can find a way to prospect for gold on other planets (or on our sun), gold may no longer be prized, as it has been for millennia. Finance Ministry tables revamp of Thai tax system THE MINISTRY OF FInance has finalised proposals for a broad restructuring of the country’s taxation system, while asserting that the new system will not negatively affect people’s incomes. Ministry permanent secretary Rungson Sriworasat met with high-level officials on Monday (July 21) to discuss the restructuring of taxation systems at three Ministry of Finance departments – the Revenue Department, the Excise Department and the Customs Department. He said the objectives of the overhaul were to make it fairer on low-income earners and to improve the efficiency of revenue generation for the state. Another aim was to increase the nation’s competitiveness in the global arena. Mr Rungson said there were many laws related to taxation that needed either to be amended or to be replaced. Under the proposals, new taxes will be introduced, such as levies on property and buildings. Rebates will also be increased for certain income tax categories. He added it was possible that corporate income tax and personal income tax reductions introduced by the last elected government would remain in place after the scheduled expiry on December 31 this year. VAT, it is proposed, will remain at 7 per cent for another year, although Army Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha an-
nounced in a televised address recently that it will have to be raised eventually to 10 per cent in order to bring it into line with regulations of the Asean Economic Community, which comes into being at the end of 2015. The ministry’s proposals for the taxation overhaul have been submitted to the National Council for Peace. The Finance Ministry has already forecast that government revenue will fall B160 billion short of target in the current this fiscal year, which ends on September 30. Mr Rungson said that the Revenue Department is expected to miss its target by B100 billion, the Customs Department by B40 billion and the Excise Department will see a shortfall of B20 billion. The budget for fiscal 2014 stands at B2.525 trillion baht, with revenue collection of B2.275 trillion, leaving a deficit of B250 billion. Revenue collection for the first nine months (to the end of June) was 6.6 per cent below target, at B1.55 trillion. The undershoot was attributed to an overestimated excise tax on diesel, based on an assumption that the tax would meet target thanks to a rebounding economy. However, Mr Rungson said, the shortfall is not expected to affect spending, as Treasury reserves total B380 billion. NNT/Bangkok Post
Political turmoil hit tourism in first half I
nternational tourist arrivals to Thailand posted a decline of 10.22 per cent in the first half of this year compared with the same period last year, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The ministry’s data reported 11,776,494 visits to the country during the first six months, down from 13,116,566 over the same period last year. The political tension since late last year continues to impact on the country’s tourism industry. The passenger movement figures (in and out) for Phuket held up rather better until the end of May, with each month this year, up to that point, outperforming 2013. But in June the Phuket figure, too, undershot last year’s by 12.5 per cent, though the figures for the first half were still up on last year, by 2.87 per cent. The ministry’s permanent secretary, Suwat Sidthilaw, said tourism was still one of the key industries injecting considerable cash in the economy.

Passenger throughput at Phuket International Airport stayed above last year’s figures until June, when it slumped. “Besides political issues, the industry will face tough times as many problems remain unsolved, such as poor logistics and transport systems, tourist scams, deteriorating attractions and a complicated bureaucratic system,” he predicted. I n Ju n e , t he r e we r e 1,559,397 foreign travellers in and out of Thailand, a decrease of 24.37 per cent from
the 2,061,782 visits during the same month last year. In addition, the tourism ministry reported international tourists to Thailand at the country’s gateway Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports in June dropped 35.03 per cent from 1,381,090 to 897,267 visits. In an attempt to boost tourism, Thailand will waive the
tourist visa fee for Chinese and Taiwanese visitors for three months, starting August 1. The National Council for Peace and Order confirmed the decision last week, following recommendations presented by leading tourism associations. Private sector agencies comprising Thai Chamber of Commerce, Federation of Thai Industries, Thai Bankers’ Association, Tourism Council of Thailand and Federation of Thai Capital Market Organisations met NCPO chief, General Prayuth Chan-ocha, to present a series of economic and business recommendations to kick-start economic recovery. The NCPO agreed to exempt Chinese and Taiwanese visitors from visa fees for the period from August 1 to October 31. This will represent a saving to each Chinese tourist of B1,000. From January to June this year, arrivals from China mainland declined 23.35 per cent to 1.87 million, while inbound tourists from Taiwan decreased 32.33 per cent to 174,061 visits. TTR Weekly
Trash-to-power effort ‘bogged down’ RENEWABLE ENERGY INITIAtives including waste-to-energy and biomass power plants have made little headway in Thailand due to opposition from local residents and NGOs, and corruption among influential people and government officials, a forum heard on Monday (June 21).
Participants in the forum on renewable energy projects, organized by the Energy for Environment Foundation noted the policy of the Ministry of Energy to increase the contribution of renewable energy to 25 per cent, or 9,200 megawatts of total electricity generation by 2021. But they pointed out that the implemen-
tation of the policy was behind schedule, with renewable energy accounting for only 11.42 per cent of power generation in March. Waste-to-energy power generation in the country totals just 47 megawatts, compared with a goal of 160 megawatts. MCOT Online

THE BIG LIST Road Runners When cops don’t chase robbers, they go after these guys. These are the top getaway attempts, with a twist.
Avoiding mass: In a 32 second video clip on YouTube, the dashboard camera of a police vehicle in Utah shows the zigs and zags of a car that clearly wasn’t going to stop. The car makes a sharp left turn into a driveway. Out comes a 7-year-old boy, sprinting as the cop follows, clearly confused and probably halfchuckling. In a TV interview two weeks after the 2010 incident, the boy admitted he took the family car because he didn’t want to go to church. Cops did not press charges, but he was gounded for two weeks. Backup limousine: In Westchester County, New York, police chased after a 20-foot limousine for several minutes in a residential area before the driver decides to take his chances on the highway. Going upwards of 150 mph, it doesn’t take long before the transmission blows, leaving one gear to work: reverse. The driver heads down a turn onto another neighborhood, but doesn’t last more than a minute before the limo backs into a tree. Turns out the driver fled because his license was suspended. During the course of the chase, he committed 28 traffic offenses in four separate towns. Naked jaybird: Early in this 2008 chase, the police learn that a naked woman is behind the wheel of her SUV, refusing to stop. She careens wildly as Officer Malcolm Fowler of the Baytown PD in Texas calls for backup. “She’s naked as a jaybird,” he radio’s the station. An off-duty officer and a civilian, both in separate pickup trucks, join to try and get her to pullover. It’s not until she is finally blocked in a residential area that she stops. Once backup arrives, a YouTube clip shows Officer Fowler yelling :“I don’t have a towel to put around her!”. Heave, ho!: Sometimes, the need for speed is trumped by the need to flee. Case in point, a 26 -yea r- old naked man on a beach in eastern Sweden last month had reportedly made sexual advances towards a woman. Her boyfriend intervened and began to punch and kick him. When police arrived, they handcuffed him on the ground but he soon jumped up and ran into the water in an attempt to escape. The cops ended up jumping into a row boat and apprehended the fleeing swimmer within minutes. Bundle of joy: W hen 26-year-old Tiffany Ellmore felt that she was on the verge of finally giving birth in Portsmouth last month, her father drover her and her partner to the hospital. On the way there and moments after her water broke in the vehicle, four unmarked police cars started flashing their sirens since their car was thought to have been stolen. When the soon-to-be grandfather finally stopped, he rushed to the backseat to help deliver the baby. “When we got to the car, we saw the baby in the man’s hands. I have never experienced anything like it before,” said Portsmouth police Sgt. Simon Gross after the incident.
Japanese man ‘wants to wear something cute’ t 50-years-old, Hideaki Kobayashi looks good in a skirt. Sporting a bushy mustache and long grey hair, he parades all over Tokyo dressed in “Seifuku” – the name for the sailor outfits worn by teen girls across Japan. “Japan society is all about conforming to the other people,”

Kobayashi told CNN. “I just want to wear something cute.” Kobayashi, a computer engineer and accomplished photographer, began dressing up just three years ago. Today, he is an internet celebrity and is sought after online by teenage girls all over Japan who want to take pictures with him. When asked why he strated
dressing up, Kobayashi said: “It’s not really something I’ve thought too deeply about. Hrm. I guess it’s because sailor suits look good on me?” Still, Kobayashi admits he is attracted to woman and still identifies as a man despite his cross-dressing. He admits that men on the street shout rude comments but is still proud
of walking out on the Tokyo streets. And it’s not without its benefits, since a Japanese prep school has already hired Kobayashi to teach teenagers to think for themselves. “If there’s something you want to do, do that,” Kobayashi told CNN. “That’s my message. Be yourself.”
Scientists honour J.Lo with water mite name A TEAM OF SCIENTISTS have discovered a new species of water mites off the coast of Puerta Rico in the Carribbean and have named it after pop singer Jennifer Lopez. Biologist Vladimir Pesic told The Huffington Post that the reason behind the choice of name for the news species is simple: “J.Lo’s songs and video kept the team in a continuous good mood when writing the manuscript and watching World Cup Soccer 2014.” The new species was discovered in 2010 in the Mona Passage, a treacherous body of water between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. According to Pesic, the music of Lopez – who was

THE ROOF IS ON FIRE! That’s what a man in Seattle yelled last week after he tried to exterminate a spider with a makeshift blowtorch made out of a lighter and a spray can. The blaze did not spread to other houses as fire officials took only a half hour to put down the fire.
The man told firefighters that he was trying to kill the spider in the laundr y room when one of the walls caught fire and quickly spread to the attic and roof. The blaze caused US$60,000 (B1.9 million) in damages and the man will have to relocate as repairs take place.
Student steals school bus, again I N FLOR IDA NEWS, A 12-year-old junior high school student was charged with grand theft auto after he allegedly stole a school bus for a joy ride last month. According to WMBB TV in Parker, Florida, the boy allegedly stole his family’s car on last Tuesday night (July 15) but then ditched it after he saw a school bus at an elementary school. Authorities pulled the boy over, about 88km away from
his home, after they saw that the bus was being dreven erratically, reports said.
In addition to grand theft auto, the 12-year-old was charged with trespassing on
school property and burglary of conveyance. This isn’t the first time the boy has been in trouble with the law for stealing a school bus. Back in June, authorities found him out for a joy ride near a retail store in Panama City, just 24km from the spot where the bus was last parked. For that crime, he was charged with grand theft of an item worth more than US$100,000 and felony criminal mischief. thephuketnews

New Angsana DJ in da house Winawee AKA DJ Wii
O
ne of the most well-versed Thai DJs is hitting the decks as Angsana Laguna Phuket’s new resident spin doctor. Bangkok-native DJ Wii is no stranger to starting the party off right, something he learned in famous venues in Thailand, Myanmar and Australia. The Phuket News recently sat down with DJ Wii for an exclusive interview. Q. Tell us a little bit about yourself and specifically your background as a DJ? Born and raised in Bangkok, I have always been an appreciator of music since my teenage years. You would have seen me regularly at bars and clubs, dancing to the beats until dawn. I was exposed to different kinds of music but did not yet understand its true artistic value. My first interest came from working as a bartender in a club when I was still in college. I loved the effect great DJs and good music had on the crowd. The ability of people to express themselves through the craft of mixing drew me in to becoming a professional DJ. I started learning from DJs that I knew for about a year before starting to play in bars and clubs. At first, I played commercial music like pop, dance and hip-hop in Tapas, Speed, Bombay Bar and other clubs on Thonglor [road] and

[in the] Silom area in Bangkok. During my first few years in the industry I was constantly exposed to different types of music. I became more and more enchanted with house music and was inspired by many great names like Norman Cook, Roger Sanchez, and the late Frankie Knuckles, just to name a few. I then started working at the Marriott and Hilton in Bangkok while often playing as the guest DJ at Café De Moc and Club Culture. For about a year, I had the opportunity to play at several cafés in luxury resorts in Yangon, Myanmar. I then went to Melbourne where I played in several establishments. One of my greatest experiences is performing once a month at
Workshop, a famous Melbourne bar, for over two years. It was a privilege to be the first Asian DJ to have the opportunity to hit the decks at this stylish and hip place. I ended up staying three years in Melbourne. After several years abroad, I decided to move back to Thailand in order to take care of my mother. I was playing at private functions and events in 5-star resorts around Bangkok. Most recently, before moving to Phuket, I was the resident DJ at Infinity of Love, an upscale wine bar in the RCA area of Bangkok. Q. How did you get the name Wii? Wii is a short version of my first name Winawee, which was given to me by my parents. I used to spell it out as “Wee” until one of my friends in Melbourne suggested to change it to “Wii” which sounds more artistic and unique. Q. Which DJ (or other musician) do you look up to / find inspiration from? My all-time favourite idol is Norman Cook, better known as “Fatboy Slim”. He is a pioneer of the big beat genre which became popular in the 1990s. I love every song on his second album, You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby. I took a great deal of inspiration from the infectious beats of house and electronic music, and incorporate them in many of my own sets to add a special flavour. Q. Which DJ(s) do you follow now? I really like Nakadia. she is not only an internationally known Thai DJ but also one of the few successful female DJs in a male-dominated profession. Having started from scratch she quickly made a name for herself and now travels around the world, playing at major festivals and taking to the decks in some of the world’s biggest cities.
Q. What’s your feel / impression about Phuket? I thought of myself as being more of the urban type and was concerned that the island life would be too quiet for me, but I was surprised how much Phuket has changed since my last visit 10 years ago. There are many new resorts, shopping malls, cool bars and stylish beach clubs. The island has all the conveniences you’d expect from a big city, yet offers that laid-back beach lifestyle. Q. How about the music scene in Thailand, and Southeast Asia in general? The music scene in Thailand, or Southeast Asia for that matter, is dominated by mainstream music from the US. With the hype exploding and still growing, mainstream music is a big target market for all enterprises, attracting the attention of big companies who started creating musicians and singers who are playing the same sounds. Our music industry lacks variety and individuality. It has become harder to spot interesting artists and even harder for talented artists to reach an audience if their music is not what the mainstream market is after. That said, I have seen some places play different sounds attract larger crowds, and I am hopeful that this kind of movement will help establish a more diverse music scene in Thailand and greater Southeast Asia. Q. What kind of sets/lineups are you planning for your Phuket crowds? / What can we look forward to? There are many great tracks on my playlist. I usually play deep-house, soul and tech-house, but it depends on the audience. I like to connect with the crowd, and play different tunes depending on the event, the time and the people.

Much more than a pretty fish THAI EYE
Kanokwan Homcha-aim kanokwan@myseek.org
It is possible to find Parrotfish on menus throughout the island and beyond. Wide spread consumption of Parrotfish will lead to over-fishing.
Kanokwan Homcha-aim is the southern coordinator for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and a member of SEEK Phuket.
@thephuketnews
T
his past month, I saw an interesting news story about Parrotfish. The main issue of the story, provided by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is in regard to the Parrotfish that are currently sold widespread in supermarkets. The IUCN is actively encouraging people to stop buying and consuming this important fish. This story led me to a Thai Facebook page with a strong stance of antiParrotfish consumption. Here in Phuket, I found Parrotfish being sold in many restaurants and local markets; quite often already on ice ready to be cooked à-la-carte. I had to get to the bottom of this story and see why this environmentally important fish was also very important to the local restaurant market. Well, I must admit that the first thing that popped into my head was “What’s the big deal? Parrotfish are abundant and I find them nearly everywhere when I dive around the local reefs”. However, after performing a little research, I found that this issue is very serious and can affect the reef at a level that I previously thought unimaginable. For some people who have no idea what Parrotfish look like, well they look exactly like a parrot. They are very colorful and have a parrot-like beak that can grind algae from coral and other rocky substrates. Parrotfish are easily found in shallow oceans throughout the world, most abundant in the Indo-Pacific. They are found along coral
reefs, rocky coasts, and sea grass beds, and play a significant role in bioerosion. Parrotfish spend most of their day eating algae off the coral reefs then they digest the edible portions from the rock and excrete it as sand, helping to create small islands and the sandy beaches. One Parrotfish can produce 90 kg of sand per year. Therefore, the Parrotfish’s eating habit is important for the production and distribution of coral sands and can prevent coral reefs from being overgrown by seaweed. In Thailand, people normally catch Parrotfish to keep as ornamental pets, not for eating. However, currently it is possible to find Parrotfish on menus throughout the island and beyond. Wide spread consumption of Parrotfish will lead to over-fishing. Now, let me show you what happens when herbivourous fish such as the Parrotfish are removed from their coral reef habitats: Research from Dr. Peter Mumby,
Queensland University in 2013 found that reefs in the conservation zone (where no fishing is allowed and Parrotfish exist) have a 6-times faster recovery rate than reefs located in fisheries zone. Experiments in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia showed that reefs surrounded with herbivorous fish can recover faster from bleaching; while reefs with no herbivorous fish are fully covered with algae. Most Caribbean reefs have been dominated by algae since the mid-1990s due to a combination of mass die-off of sea urchins and the overfishing of Parrotfish. The healthiest Caribbean reefs are those that still have robust Parrotfish populations. Parrotfish are not only beautiful, but can also help restore coral reefs. The next time you visit a seafood restaurant, please consider ordering something other than Parrotfish. These beautiful creatures should swim freely in the reefs and not end up on your plate.

Tackling vocational student violence
The Vocational Education Commission has submitted six strategies to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) for preventing fighting among vocational students. The measures include requiring each vocational school to be responsible for their own specific areas, monitoring risk zones with the authority; establishing a risk zone ranking, making a blacklist of habitually bad students; visiting the students on the list at home and contacting Internal Security Operations Command for help if any crime or fight occurs. School poster campaign promotes safer driving We hope that parents and other adults that drive into and around the school will take note of the messages so that we can all be a little safer on Phuket’s roads.
S
tudents, aged 9-12, in grades 4-6 of DaraSamuth Phuket School’s English Programme (EP) have meticulously been designing road safety posters to display in and around the school. “Their intended audiences included both students in the school as well as the adults that drop them off. “We had a competition and the winning designs were chosen to be reproduced and put up around the school,” remarked Stephen Brady, Head of EP. He noted that the competition gave students a good opportunity to apply topics they had been learning in the classroom. “Students have been learning about health and safety in their home room classes and also as part of their health curriculum, while persuasive writing and different text-types are also studied in English.” Most students were quick to point out some of the health hazards that can be seen on the roads of Phuket, particularly the amount of people who don’t wear a helmet, he noted. The strikingly effective winning poster’s slogan declares: “Wear a helmet or smash your head!” Students and teachers were also concerned about the dangerous driving that occurs around the island and close to the school. They
have asked that a message be sent out to parents through the school’s SMS alert system, encouraging all drivers to slow down, especially when approaching and entering the school. “I was very impressed by the standard of the posters designed and made in a very short time. They are certainly eye-catching and use persuasive language effectively,” said Mr Brady. The winners of the competition were awarded “golden time” stars for their class and points for their class teams. Each class is split into teams and they compete to be the star team every week, earning points through good work and behaviour. When the whole class collects enough golden time stars, they are rewarded with a golden time party or activity. We hope that parents and other adults that drive into and around the school will take note of the messages so that we can all be a little safer on Phuket’s roads,” Mr Brady concluded.

Deadly American spider strikes in Thailand
A
man in Phrae province has become the first confirmed person in Thailand to be bitten by a brown recluse spider, a venomous species native to North America. Doctors say the man is in critical condition and may need to have his leg amputated. Uthai Viengkam, 46, suffered multiple spider bites on July 8 to the back of his right foot and on his left calf while he was in bed at his home in Phrae’s Den Chai district. Mr Uthai and his family members killed several spiders they found in the room and kept them in a plastic bag. They initially suspected Mr Uthai had been bitten by brown widow spiders, but did not seek any medical care. Two days later, however, Mr Uthai was still suffering from pain in the area around the bites, so his relatives finally took him to Denchai Crown Prince Hospital on July 10.
He was later transferred to Phrae Hospital where he remains in the intensive care unit. He is still conscious, but his kidneys are failing and he needs an oxygen mask to breathe. The dead spiders were sent to Siriraj Hospital for analysis. Thanjira Jiranantakan, a toxicologist at the hospital’s Poison Control Centre, said specialists agreed that Mr Uthai was bitten by spiders. However, only one of the spiders that the hospital tested was the poisonous brown recluse spider, Dr Thanjira said. The other spiders were not poisonous. The spider may have been brought to Thailand unintentionally as stowaways or transported intentionally as pets. Mr Uthai felt severe pain around the bites and his skin became swollen, inflamed and turned to a blue colour, the toxicologist said. Brown recluse spider bites can damage soft tissue leaving wounds that
take months to heal and deep scars. In some cases, if the venom accesses the blood steam, a patient can have symptoms of fever, anaemia and an inability to pass urine, leading to possible death. “This is the first official report of a brown recluse spider bite in Thailand,” Dr Thanjira said. Phrae Hospital said Mr Uthai’s bites were infected by bacteria, causing a blood infection, low blood platelet count and possible kidney failure. His right leg was badly swollen, obstructing blood circulation. Doctors are now monitoring Mr Uthai’s condition closely as there may be an urgent need to amputate his right leg. “This kind of spider does not usually cause a serious condition like this,” Dr Thanjira said. “But in this case there are complications from a bacterial infection that could potentially result in death.” Bangkok Post thephuketnews

Red works for any hot ticket Seductive perfection for your lips
L
ush, red lips is a look that never goes out of style. Red lipstick is great for every occasion and is a definite must-have for any woman. But red comes in so many variations. The question is, what’s the right shade for you? Rick DiCecca, Artistry Global makeup artist, shared his tips on how to choose the best red lipstick. He said that Thai women’s undertone tends to be warm or neutral so the best red lipstick for them should be a coral red. For those who have a cool undertone, a pinkish-red lipstick is recommended. For something more universal, every woman looks good in cherry red, but this look requires confidence as it draws a lot of attention. Cool it down by using cherry red gloss instead of lipstick to give a sheer colour that is not too bold. As red brings attention to your lips, make sure your lips are in a present-
able condition. Never let them get dry and flaky. A simple solution for chapped lips is to soak a soft toothbrush in warm water and brush it on your lips to remove dead, dried skin. After that, apply a lipstick that offers UV protection and moisture to nourish the lips. To achieve a flawless application, DiCecca recommended using a concealer around the lips and using an automatic lip liner pencil in a shade that closely matches the natural tone of your lips. When you line your lips, start on the upper lip and define the Cupid’s bow

truggling to find that perfect red? The secret to finding it is in finding one that compliments the tone of your skin. Red lipstick is a classic; the trick is to keep things simple so that the red is the main focus of attention! Check out these lipstick tips: The face: Keep it simple. Instead of layering your face in heavy makeup, try and keep the rest of your face on the lighter side, to avoid looking like a clown. Skip the eyeliner and only use mascara (black for brunettes and brown for blondes and redheads), which will open up your eyes. Finish off with some face powder and dab the cheeks with a soft blush. The lips: Harper’s Bazaar expert makeup artist, Ashunta Sheriff, suggests filling in the lips with a liner first, to control the red lipstick from bleeding. Be sure to check out MAC’s limited edition colours, you’ll be spoilt for choice! The right shade: It can be difficult picking the @thephuketnews
How to get rid of unsightly sunspots
There are many methods on how to get rid of them. Here are some suggestions from Mother nature:
right shade, particularly as so many makeup artists continuously throw out different rules and tips. The best thing to do is to test out a bunch of shades and pick the most gorgeous one. Sorted. The nails: Try picking a light colour or a dark bold tone – no need to go matchy-matchy with red nails and red lips. In fact, your lips would stand out more by using a different polish altogether. Try MAC’s Nail Lacquer “Nocturnelle” to really make a statement. Mix and matching: Very few makeup artists actually stick to using one shade of lipstick; in fact they tend to blend a few together to create the perfect colour.
1) Slice a fresh lemon and apply the fruit directly to the sunspots for 10 to 15 minutes per day. The fruit’s acid can help with lightening the spots and also helps to remove any dead skin cells. 2) Alternatively, you can apply Aloe Vera gel twice a day to help heal the sundamaged areas. 3) Another option would be to steep a green tea bag in boiling water for three to five minutes. Squeeze the bag onto a cotton ball and rub over the spots twice per day; the antioxidants in the tea help the skin heal itself. 4) Break open Vitamin E capsules and apply the gel directly to the sunspots. The same properties that help fade scars can also help to fade the sunspots.
first. Next, draw a line along the centre of the lower lip to the outer corners, connect the lines. You may use the lipstick to fill in the lips for a longer wear time. Lastly, reline the lips using a lip liner in a shade that matches the lipstick. This technique creates a beautifully defined red-carpet finish. Another important tip when wearing a red lipstick is to avoid dramatic make-up on other areas of your face. Choose soft eye make-up and a barelythere cheek blush so that your lips are the only centre of attention. Last but not least, don’t forget to wear your confidence. It’s the best make-up every woman can carry with her. “Women should enjoy applying make-up. Just have as much fun as you like with a variety of shades. The only two things to remember are that confidence is the true key to every woman’s beauty, and there are no written rule on how to use red colour on your lips,” DiCecca said. Bangkok Post

Ocean diet: Seafood, and eat it with pleasure GASTRONAUT G-Star editor@classactmedia.co.th

rriving at the beachside restaurant at SALA Phuket, diners get a spectacular view of the Andaman Sea through the trees of Sirinat National Park. As you walk to the beach you are flanked by two 30-metre reflection pools which mirror the blue skies and the turquoise waters of the ocean. The SALA Restaurant is laid out in a long, narrow two-tiered setting which affords all diners sea views and the benefits of the cool ocean breeze as they dine. We were seated by friendly staff who took our drinks order, one of which was a sublime fusion with Earl Grey tea. The specialty of the house is, of course, seafood so we opted for the Sunday Seafood Sunset special.
The meal began with a trio of seafood starters: poached sea prawns tossed with lime juice, tomatoes, sweet peppers and onion; Yellow Fin Tuna tossed with sesame seeds, tomatoes, shallots and sesame vinaigrette and (my favourite) grilled scallop ceviche with chilies and oranges. This is more of a Hawaiian-style “poke” than South American ceviche and is refreshing, crispy and very tasty due to the fresh, ingredients used in the dish. As we watched the sun set, one of Phuket’s most popular bands – Pjae Stanley’s Trio (tonight a quartet) – entertained us with easy listening blues and jazz numbers. Next was the main event: SALA’s North Coast Crab and Seafood Bake. Black crab, scallops and daily fish poached in saffron seafood broth with white wine, garlic, sweet peppers and potatoes. Plus delicious rock lobsters and tiger prawns seasoned with Cajun spices, char-grilled over coconut wood. All served with garlic bread and potatoes to help you soak up the saffron seafood broth! The fish is soft and flaky as good reef fish should be, yet beautifully marinated in the saffron broth. The scal-
lops are firm and tasty while the head and tails are virtually falling off of the well-cooked prawns. But the big hitters here are the lobster and crab. The Slipper Lobster tails are rich in flavour as the meat simply drops out of the shell and is full of rich, buttery delight with a light touch of spices. The black crab, though, is the real deal. It can be a bit of work to get to the meaty parts, but that is half the fun. The crab meat is salty with a fine texture and a sweetness that goes well with the broth. The menu was prepared snd arranged by Chef Jan Hollister. Educated in Hawaii in the late 1990s, chef Jan has been plying his trade here in Thailand ever since. After four years with SALA in Samui he has just completed his sixth year with SALA Phuket. After a welcomed 10-minute break, the unusually presented desserts arrived at our table. Delivered in mini milk-bottles layered in three sections and with a side cookie. The delicate balance of the Bourbon Milkshake comes with coconut and vanilla ice cream. A perfect end to a wonderful meal.

Mushy Peas are good for you Schooling is free, but parents have to compensate for most other things, and many of our students just can’t afford much.
T
he Mushy Peas, one of Phuket FC’s most jolly and loyal supporters groups, kicked off its own community charity programme last week with the donation of B18,000 worth of sports equipment and school supplies to Wat Sawang Arom School in Rawai. “Every month for a year, we’re going to donate to worthy causes and projects in the community,” remarked Richard Dillon, group cofounder and operator of Property4SalePhuket.com This month’s initial donation included soccer and sepak takraw balls, badminton rackets and birdies, stationery, books and future board, while Richie added that the group also donated B2,000 but to support the Rawai Junior Football team, who will compete in a youth tournament in Patong this week. Located adjacent to a Buddhist temple of the same name, Wat Sawang Arom School is one of three public schools in Rawai, and has about 800 pupils from Anuban (kindergarten) up to Mattayom 3 (9th Grade or Year 10), who are some of the poorest in the southern part of the island. “About half of our kids come from impoverished
Grade 3 student and teacher reps received the goods from a Mushy Peas contingent last week. homes,” says 3rd grade teacher and school coordinator, Ms Prapa Boonkong. “We’re a government school, but the funding we do get is not always enough to buy sufficient supplies, especially for art and P.E. Schooling is free, but parents have to compensate for most other things, and many of our students just can’t afford much. So we’re so grateful when they [the Mushy Peas] came to ask what we needed,” she said. Richard, or as fellow supporters know him, “Richie” said that the Mushy Peas are committed to make similar charitable donations to worthy projects every month for the next year. “We’ll make similar donations to the other schools in Rawai for starters, then will decide and vote among the group which other projects to pursue, whether it be painting walls at the temple, or sporting projects, football nets, balls and so forth… We’re open to any suggestions from the community,” he said.
Asked about the fund, Richie said that he doesn’t anticipate it getting any smaller. “This month we had about 20 contributors to the fund. Next month, I reckon we’ll get more. It will only grow. Our group is growing, and we all want to give back to Rawai... to Phuket,” he said. Mushy Peas was formed in 2011 by Richie and the late and great, James “Shaggy” Lakin who sadly, passed away in his sleep in 2012. “Phuket FC had just got promoted to the first division,” Richie recalls. “Shaggy and I were at a game, in the stands looking down at all the green-clad fans. Shaggy made a comment that it looked like ‘Mushy Peas’, and the name has stuck ever since,” he laughed. To reach out to The Mushy Peas, call Richie on 084-844-6476. Blind kids realize vision through photography The photos aren’t the point. The kids get to interact with people. Many of them had trouble socialising because they were kept at home most of the time. Some have issues with motor control, because they didn’t play like other kids.

A
10-year-old boy took a photo of me. His bulging eyes were clouded and glossy. They rolled uncontrollably in their sockets. He asked me, “Can I measure your height, please?” He tiptoed to place his hands on my shoulders, then took four steps backwards. Hands steadying the digital camera as he pressed his eyes tightly on the viewfinder, the visually impaired boy counted to three and clicked the shutter. Then he held the screen up to his eyes, walked towards me to show me the picture. I was centred, skillfully framed. Sithikorn Mungraiklang, whose sight is badly impaired though not totally blind, was fascinated by our photographer’s huge camera. He lifted it up, surprised at how heavy it was. “It’s like a gun,” he said. His teacher printed the photograph and glued it to a calendar stand. The Bangkok School for the Blind has been receiving old calendars as donations, because the thick laminated paper is suitable for embossing Braille. Today the school for the blind welcomed volunteers from Pict4all, a photography club, which works with the Hua Jai Tai Pab (Photos from the Heart) project. As the name suggests, the project teaches visually impaired children to use cameras, even if they can’t see. At 10am, we stood outside the school flagging taxis to Ratchawat Market. Eight children were wearing neon green T-shirts, each with a camera strapped to their wrist. Each had a buddy or a volunteer who acted as their seeing eyes, who had taught them how to take photographs. Some of these children can see, though badly, while others were born blind. Earlier in preparation, the kids took selfies for later identification. The volunteers worked with them to refresh their memories, watching them turn on the cameras and measure distances with their steps. Some were more proficient than others. “There was a kid who refused to walk backwards when we started working together,” said Apivich Rinthapoln, who has been a volunteer for two years. “The initial question was whether the handicapped really had to be handicapped from doing certain activities,” Nopadon said. “Sure, it’s a radical statement. We wanted a distinct contrast. Taking a photo requires sight and it seems pointless to travel when you can’t see. We challenged this assumption.” The main idea is to question the arbitrary limits society places on the disabled regarding what they can or can’t do, and empowering the disabled in that process. On a field trip to Ratchawat Market, blind children learn to interact with and take pictures of people. The project has been working with the Blind School since the end of 2010, but went on a hiatus for more than two years, when they began working in provinces across the country. They return to the school at the end of last year. “You wouldn’t believe it. Some kids only take an hour and a half to learn, before being able to take pictures. For others, maybe 15 hours. How late they enter school and the economic background of their families have a huge impact. The most extreme case we encountered was an 18-year-old just starting school for the first time. He had to start
A blind student takes a selfie. at the kindergarten level. There’s a huge missing link in his development,” said Nopadon. Student Jidapa Pisawong, 10, said, “I joined the class because I wanted my parents to see my photos.” She has been to Nang Loeng Market to take pictures. Jidapa isn’t completely blind but the volunteers teach every student the same practical skills. “It’s really fun and I think I can even use it in the future, maybe for a job.” On the day we went along with them, the children were on an assignment to take photos of HM the King in the shops and carts at the market. Besides taking pictures, the assignments requires them to start a conversation, such as ask the shopkeepers why they hung a photo of the King and Queen and other basic information. This is a way to encourage interaction with people and surroundings. In a previous project, the children wrote narratives to accompany the photographs they took. “The photos aren’t the point. The kids get to interact with people. Many of them had trouble socialising because they were kept at home most of the time,” said Apivich. “Some have issues with motor control, because they didn’t play like other kids.” Most of the photographs came out fine; you wouldn’t be able to tell that they were taken by someone who could hardly see. When Nopadon set out to establish the programme four years ago, he was met with incredulity. People asked him if he was dreaming. They questioned the feasibility, and a typical response was, “Why create the desire in these children? Why make them want things they can’t have?” “For starters, it’s happiness. I think it allows them to do something completely new and something they probably never thought possible. I think just holding the camera for the first time is something remarkable,” said Nopadon. “There was this kid, Benz, who’s now in Nonthaburi studying to be a masseuse. He was only in Prathom 2 when we taught him. He only took macro photos. He would stand so still that we had to ask him how many pictures he took. He told me he would count in his head until he’s completely still before clicking the shutter. He enjoyed the concentration. It made him happy.” For these volunteers, taking a good photograph is just an extra benefit, because they know vision is not only perceived by the eyes. Bangkok Post

3D printed.... ice cream?
Students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a homemade ice cream printer using a Cuisinart soft-server maker. The project was part of an assignment for their additive manufacturing class as they used a Solidoodle 3D printer to control the plate and froze the ice-cream using liquid nitrogen as it oozed out. “ We were inspired to design this printer because we wanted to make something fun with this up and coming technology in a way that we could grab the attention of kids,” said Kristine Bunker, one of the students who was part of the project.

xoskeletons helping the paralysed to walk, tiny maggot-inspired devices gnawing at brain tumours, machines working tirelessly as hospital helpers: in many respects, the future of medicine is already here. Experts say that, at the experimental level, human skills are already being enhanced or replaced by robots and other hi-tech substitutes – and these may become commonplace just a few years from now if we keep heading down this road.
Cancercrunching claws:
Inspired by crab pincers, scientists in Singapore created a tiny robot which can access a person’s stomach via the throat to cut up tumours using miniature claws. One robotic arm holds the tumour while the other slices away, according to the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which took part in the research. The procedure, which takes 20 minutes, may one day eliminate the need for conventional surgery, which can take hours.
Computer chip eye sight:
Among the advances in treating degenerative retinal diseases is the so-called “bionic eye”, which restored rudimental vision to dozens of people in Europe and the United States. It works with a chip implanted in the eye to mimic the function of photoreceptor cells, typically combined with a miniature camera mounted in a pair of sporty-looking sunglasses. The camera sends images via mini-computer to the chip, which converts to electrical signals to the brain, where they are interpreted as vision. A drawback, however, is the high cost, about US$140,000 (B4.4 million)
Roboskeletons:
Engineers around the world are racing to design the lightest, most autonomous robotic exoskeleton, not only to restore movement to disabled people but also to boost the strength and endurance of those who carry heavy cargo or walk very far, like
soldiers or rescue workers. Strapped to the lower body, such devices are powered by motors that take some of the strain off the muscles – similar to the brain-controlled suit that helped a paraplegic kick a football at the World Cup opening ceremony. Several prototypes have been developed, but many battle to meet the key challenge of compact, long-lasting, portable power supply and charging station.
Healers, gophers and caregivers:
To bypass human tremors and the need for large cuts for surgeons to get their hands on a deep organ, much smaller surgeon-guided robot prongs and pincers are increasingly being used for minimally invasive procedures. They also allow for degrees of rotation and motion beyond what the human hand is capable of, and make remote surgery possible by allowing doctors to control a scalpel in robotic hands on another continent. Saving the health sector a pretty penny in labour costs, robots are also starting to take over duties at hospital as cart pushers. AFP

Thailand’s Line Shop, which is partially in English, is still in beta but allows users to shop for goods from several different big brand sellers along with smaller labels. According to TechinAsia. com, the transactions are likely handled manually between the seller and the buyer. The roll-out comes just months after Line released a similar app
Gaming nets team US$5 million
“Newbee”, a team comprised of five Chinese gamers, are US$5 million (B159 million) richer after winning the fourthever Dota 2 international worldwide championship tournament in Seattle last week. The best-of-five competition pitted the top few teams in the world in a two-day tournament format. The teams played for a share of US$10 million, by far the biggest prize money pool in e-sports history. The entire event was broadcast on ESPN 3 with a preview show on ESPN 2. Runners-up “Vici Gaming” took home little over US$1.5 million (B47.7 million).

IN BRIEF Ong Bak choreographer dies
My eyes hate me FILM REVIEW J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
STEP UP: ALL IN In a film like this, characters are merely cardboard cutouts that happen to bust-a-move. None of these one-dimensional characters are fleshed-out... and that’s the point. .
I
must admit, there was a bit of anger when I shelled out money to watch Step Up: All In. It’s not that dance films automatically make me gag, I rather enjoy some of their more acrobatic moves. But pivoting from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and The Last Executioner, this film was something I usually avoid. Despite my indifference, I gave the film a shot. “Channing Tatum had to get his career started somewhere,” I thought to myself, thinking that if his mediocre acting were in this I could pretend to enjoy Step Up: All In. There were moments throughout the film that I actually ate my words. Some of the actors did a solid job despite most of the film’s script sounding something akin to cows trying to talk. Audiences who willingly pay to see any of the five Step Up films don’t sign up for convincing dialogue or psychological insight into a group of young people trying to make it in brutal, fleeting industry. It’s all about the flash and colour, which Step Up: All In has in spades. The film tells the story of Sean Asa (Ryan Guzman) from the previous film, Step Up: Revolution. Him and his crew, the Mob, are struggling to hold on to their piece of the US$50,000 prize from that film’s giant dance battle. The crew breaks up, most of the members head back to Miami but stubborn Sean stays in Los Angeles.
Faced with eviction and working as a janitor, Sean learns about a dance competition called “The Vortex” in Las Vegas. The prize? A three-year contract to work at Caesar’s Palace Resort and Casino. All Sean has to do is round-up a new crew, go to Las Vegas, and win the epic dance battle at the end – deja vu, anyone? A bit of intrigue is thrown in when Sean learns he has to compete against his former crew, the Mob, as well as a host of characters from the previous Step Up films. It’s virtually the same formula as all the other films, save for a bit of justification for competing and the exclusion of Tatum. The franchise has become so bland, and the films so simliar to each other, that even the characters are self-aware. Moose (Adam Sevani), who was in the second, third, and fourth Step Up installments, says: “Does everything have to end in a big, giant dance battle?”. Yes, Moose, because then you would not have a paycheck. In a film like this, characters are merely cardboard cutouts that happen to bust-amove. None of these one-dimensional characters are fleshed-out – and that’s the point. This story is much more plot-driven than any other, with dialogues and faint attempts at humour serving as placeholders until the dances get going – which end up being spectacular. The movie is in 3D and makes all the moves “pop”, but it doesn’t save the film.
Panna Rittrikai, Thailand’s acclaimed action choregrapher and film director, died last Sunday (July 20) from liver disease and acute renal failure. Rittrikai’s career spanned over two decades but he’s perhaps best known as the action choregrapher of 2003’s Ong Bak and 2005’s Tom-Yum Goong, both starring Thai star Tony Jaa. “[My movies] are popular among taxi drivers and som tam vendors,” Rittrikai said in 2004, “my loyalest fans are folk people in the far-out tambons, where they lay out mattresses on the ground and drink moonshine whisky while watching my outdoor movies.”
Ron Howard set for Beatles documentary
The early days of the Fab Four’s career will hit the big screen as Ron Howard has signed on to direct a documentary of The Beatles. The film, a co-production that involves The Beatles’ own label, Apple Corps, and producer Brian Grazer, will follow the band from their humble beginnings in Liverpool to their last major concert in San Francisco. The project has no release date yet, but will include never-before-seen footage of the band from fans around the world.
A reboot of classic retro monsters
Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman, and others look set to see the light of day once again as Universal Studios has given the green light for a new series of crossover films. The company have tapped screenwriter Chris Morgan (Fast and Furious franchise) and producer/director Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek franchise) to lead the overarching concept. The first film is will be a revival of the 1932 horror, The Mummy, pencilled in for a 2016 release.

Not only is the menu incredible but so are the prizes that are on offer. Up for grabs on the night are five overseas holidays including four nights at Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara in Abu Dhabi and three nights in the Maldives. Phuket Has Been Good To Us receives no government funding for its work to provide free, quality English lessons to underprivileged Thai children on the island of Phuket. The foundation relies solely on generosity of businesses, kind individuals and events such as this to continue its work. “We’re so grateful to Anantara Vacation Club for generously hosting this special evening,” said Tina Hall, Foundation Director of Operations. “We can’t wait for this fabulous night of food and drinks and fun entertainment, all for a great cause!” Proceeds from this event will go to Phuket Has Been Good To Us; a Thai registered charity established in the aftermath of the 2004 Asian tsunami. Money raised will enable the charity to continue to expand their much needed English education programme that currently serves more than 1,000 underprivileged Thai children in three government schools in Phuket.

Don’t forget to smell the roses on life’s fairway David Brook editor@classactmedia.co.th
G
olfing great, Ben Hogan, once said: “As you walk down the fairway of life you must smell the roses …”. He walked many fairways and no doubt smelled many roses during his illustrious career, winning nine Majors, which ties him with Gary Player, trailing only Jack Nicklaus (18), Tiger Woods (14) and Walter Hagen (11). Today’s Majors comprise the Masters, the US Open, the Open Championship, and the PGA Championship. The US Open dates back to 1895; the PGA Championship originated in 1916 whilst The Masters was introduced in 1934. But by far the oldest golf tournament in existence, and golf’s first Major,
is The Open Championship, first played on October 17, 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club, Ayrshire, Scotland. The winner received no prize money but was awarded the Challenge Belt, a red leather belt with a silver buckle, which was subsequently replaced by The Golf Champion Trophy, perhaps better known today as the Claret Jug. Scotland is traditionally regarded as the home
of golf. The first written record is James II’s banning of golf in 1457, being an unwelcome distraction to learning archery. The Old Course at St Andrews, seemingly pre-dates 1574, whilst golf was being played on Musselburgh Links, East Lothian, as early as March 1672. The oldest surviving rules of golf were compiled in March 1744 for the Company of Gentlemen Golfers, later renamed The Honour-
able Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the world’s oldest verifiable organised golf club who are now based at Muirfield, itself an Open venue since 1892. It was 1894 before The Open was first played outside Scotland, the venue for the 34th Open being Royal St George’s in Kent, founded in 1887 and host for 13 Open Championships. In 1922 Walter Hagen (11 times Major winner) made
history by becoming the first native-born American to win the Open Championship and is one of only two other US players to have won at St George’s. Ben Curtis was the most recent in 2003 in a Tournament perhaps more famously renowned for the contentious disqualification of Mark Roe. Shef f ield b or n R o e turned professional in 1981, joined the European Tour
in 1985 claiming three notable victories, Catalan Open (1989), Lancome Trophy (1992) and French Open (1994) which boosted him to 9th on the Order of Merit. Roe started Day three of the 2003 Open six shots behind the leader at five over par and after a bogey on the opening hole his Tournament seemed over. But a clutch of birdies and an eagle on 13 th resulted in a spectacular round of 67, finishing one over par, and within twoshots of the lead. Amid the euphoria disaster suddenly hit, it all meant nothing as he and Parnevik were disqualified for failing to swap scorecards before play and neither they or the officials had seen the error. Ironically Roe would probably have been playing with eventual winner Curtis, but from being in a position to win Roe was heading home. And he did not stop to smell the roses, only the disappointment of wondering what might have been .... thephuketnews

of the week
Pet Cleo is a female short-haired, athletic mixed breed, who is loving and affectionate. She loves to be patted and stroked throughout the day. After six months recovering at Doggie Heaven after being the victim of a dog attack, she’s now fully recovered. She is vaccinated, very lively and enjoying her daily runs on Layan Beach. If you are looking for a loving, sensitive dog to join your family, she is very sociable with other dogs and would love to find a new boss to follow around and teach her some tricks – as long as you shower her in love. She is also able to be re-homed to the USA, Canada or Europe. Doggie Heaven rescues dogs who are injured, ill or neglected and gives them what they need to recover. With the combination of good food, the right medicine, lots of love and time to rest, they find themselves recovered and ready to enjoy life again. Then we do our best to find them suitable loving homes. If you are interested to know more, give us a call on 084-877-3566. For more information, visit doggieheaven.net.

Phuket lose Andaman Derby, fall to Krabi 3-1 FOOTBALL
Is your board safe when traveling? SURF SPOT Tim Campbell editor@classactmedia.co.th
A S YOU E XC I T E DLY pack for your long-awaited surf trip, you suddenly freeze with a weird look on your face. You remember last time you we’re at the airport and how you saw the airport staff throwing luggage around like bocce balls. The decision comes: do you really want to take your brand new custommade board and run the risk of damage, or do you hope you can rent a board at your destination? It’s hard to determine if one airline handles luggage better than another since this comes down to the individual staff who handle it. Knowing what you have experienced this before doesn’t give you much confidence. Even though you can’t guarantee your board will be safe, you can improve your chances. Unscrew your fins and, using small pieces of foam, tape them on the tail and

nose. Next, use bubble wrap and bind it a couple of times around the entire board. Place in a surf travel board bag, put your name and address on the bag and you’re right to go. Surfboards are classified as sports equipment and some airlines have good rates while others charge you a pretty penny, even up to US$200 (B6,000) per board. So before you book your air ticket check the terms and conditions – that may make or break your holiday. Tim’s Tip: You can use your clothes as more protection in your board bag. See you in the water! Tim Campbell www.surf-sup.asia

n Supachai Srilachai’s first match as the new Phuket FC coach, things didn’t go as planned. The Ronins lost out on an important three points over rivals Krabi FC in the Andaman Derby last Saturday (July 19) as Phuket FC took a 3-1 loss. This was the second home loss of the season for the team, as they previously fell to Gulf Saraburi 5-4 back on June 22 in Stefano “Teco” Cugurra Rodrigues’ last match as Phuket FC coach. In addition, Krabi and Phuket’s previous matchup ended in a 0-0 draw back on March 22. The team fell into a hole early on as Krabi’s Kritsana
I
Taiwan took advantage of a header by teamate Erivaldo that hit the crossbar in the 3rd minute. It was all Krabi for the first half, as they scored one more only to have it annulled for offsides. In the second half, Yannick Mbengono headed a perfectlytimed pass by Somnuek KaewArporn in the 55th minute. Less than 20 minutes later, Ekkapot Pongpaew lifted Krabi to cer-
tain victory with a shot from the left-side of the penalty box in the 73rd minute. Not to be outdone, Phuket’s Yusuke Sato scored his second of the season – again in the 90th minute – with a header from Alef Pochi’s chipped free kick pass. The loss knocks Phuket FC down one spot on the Yamaha League-1 standings, 10th place with 29 points, and nine
points away from 3rd place team Bangkok FC (38 points), the final spot for promotion to the Thai Premier League. Phuket FC’s next home match is this Sunday (July 27) at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town, kick-off at 6:30pm. The Phuket News went to print before Phuket FC’s away match against Sriracha FC on July 23.
Phuket FC appoint Supachai Srilachai as head coach FOOTBALL NEARLY FOUR WEEKS after Stefano “Teco” Cugurra Rodrigues left command of Phuket FC, team officials have finally tapped a new name for the job: Supachai Srilachai. Phuket FC President Pariyawit Achariyachai confirmed the addition of Supachai on the team’s official Facebook page. Previously, Supachai was
the coach for Looktabfah Pathumthani FC, which he founded in 2009, and plays in the Regional League Division 2. “With only thirteen games left to play, I promise I’ll try my best,” coach Supichai said in a statement. “As for the team plans, we need to know what we lack and then fix it. The previous games showed us the problems we’ve got in our defensive. The
Ronin attack did quite well but have failed to score. This is what we need to make it as our first priority.” He also cited the upcoming Phuket FC Youth Academy as an important pillar in the future of the club’s success. “Now, we’re in the planning process, I saw many kids right here interested in football. I believe this will be an important part of the club in the future for sure,” he said.

Thalang open their account with victory over Laguna CRICKET Dave Thomas editor2@classactmedia.co.th
W
ith both teams chasing their first points of the Outrigger Twenty20 season, last year’s premiers Laguna were pitted against Thalang, recent winners of the 35 over league. The coin fell Thalang’s way and Captain Craig Murphy elected to bat. Manish Sadarangani did what Laguna couldn’t do in the recent Grand Final when he picked up Andrew McMillan’s wicket in the very first over. It wasn’t a sign of things to come as Simon Wetherell set about the Laguna attack in his familiar fashion. Justin Thomatos had missed Thalang’s first T20 match
but wasn’t out of touch and the pair posted 100/1 at the 10 over drinks break. Just after the break Wetherell brought up his half century but the Phuket sun took it’s toll. First Thomatos (35 runs) was caught off a no-ball and then again off a legal delivery. Wetherell (57 runs) ran himself out to have Thalang 115/4 after 13 overs. With batting to come Thalang may have expected a high total but it was Laguna that bowled themselves back into contention. Only 2 more boundaries were scored in the next 7 overs and Thalang’s innings closed on 152/6. Sameer Khan was the pick of the bowlers with 2/17 from 4 overs. Requiring 7.6 runs per over, Laguna were quickly under pressure with tight bowling from Thai youngster ‘Paan’. Only poor fielding
Thalang’s Justin Thomatos bowls to Laguna’s Stuart reading. Photo: Michael Way from Thalang kept Laguna’s opening pair out in the middle and, ironically, it was Paan that took a catch in the third over to remove Damien Clowes from the bowling of Barrie Buck. The highest run scorers from
Laguna’s last match Manish and Rishi Sadarangani both fell bowling of Paan in the 4th and 6th overs. Next on Paan’s radar was the difficult high catch of Ali Khan from the bowling
of Buck and Laguna were an unlikely 36/4 from 6.5 overs. If anyone was going to hit runs for Laguna it was Sameer Khan and Stuart Reading, that were now at the crease and in the 3.1 overs prior to drinks they hit 30 runs without loss. Five balls after the break
and the hard hitting Sameer Khan (39 runs) was bowled by Andrew McMillan. Iqbal Malik and Roly Cooper came and went to the bowling of Justin Thomatos and Reading played a lone hand in tricky run chase full of dropped catches from Thalang. Laguna got as close as 111/5 with 5 overs to play but fell 15 runs short as Thalang secured their first points of the season. Buck 2/15 and Thomatos 3/29 were the pick of the bowlers for Thalang. This Sunday (July 27) ICC take on Thalang in the morning (10am) and the Village play Laguna in the afternoon (2pm). Cook still captain as England call up Buttler against India
CGAMES
CRICKET ALASTAIR COOK REtained the England captaincy while the selectors brought in uncapped Lancashire wicketkeeper Jos Buttler to a 13-man squad announced last Tuesday (July 22) for the third Test against India at Southampton this Sunday (July 27). After England’s 95run defeat in the second Test at Lord’s on Monday (July 21), Cook insisted on Monday (July 21) he had no intention of standing down as captain despite the heavy loss representing England’s 10th successive Test without a win – their worst run in more than 20 years. The Brit has also seen his own form decline, with Cook now having gone 27 innings since scoring the last of his England record 25 Test hundreds. Several former England captains have urged Cook to stand down as skipper in a bid to regain his batting form. Buttler, although uncapped at Test level, has long been earmarked for a debut in the five-day game after impressing in the course of 63 limited overs appearances for England. This season has seen the 23-year-old score 568 runs at an average of 40.57, including one hundred and five fifties in eight Championship matches for Lanchashire. India lead the fivematch series 1-0 after the first Test at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge ground was drawn. England’s defeat at Lord’s – their seventh in their past nine Tests, ended in embarrassment as several batsmen succumbed to an obvious hooking trap baited by India paceman Ishant Sharma, who finished with Test-best figures of seven for 74. After ten years, Tour stage winner Rogers mulls on silver lining CYCLING
M
ichael Rogers said he had learnt lessons when serving a temporary doping suspension that helped him win his first ever Tour de France stage. The 34-year-old Australian escaped from a five-man breakaway group to claim victory on the Tour’s mammoth 237.5km 16th stage from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon last Tuesday (July 22). Yet the Tinkoff-Saxo rider’s success
came only after a temporary suspension for taking the banned stimulant clenbuterol was lifted. Rogers tested positive for clenbuterol at the Japan Cup last October but was cleared by the International Cycling Union (UCI) of any wrong-doing back in April. “Certainly it’s been a lesson in life for me, I just accepted the person who I was,” said Rogers of his enforced break. “Sometimes you need a lesson in life to see the real silver lining in the cloud.” Although a three-time world timetrial champion, Rogers had never won
a Grand Tour stage before this year. He won two at the Giro d’Italia in May, just a month after returning from suspension, and now managed his first Tour stage in his 10th appearance at the Grand Boucle. “You dream of winning a stage of the Tour de France since you’re a kid. This was my 10th Tour, that makes 205 stages I’ve been without a win. “It’s amazing, I can’t describe the joy I felt in the last 500m when I knew I was going to win. “I hope I don’t have to wait another 10 years to feel that again.” AFP
SPORTING HOUSEHOLD names such as Usain Bolt and Bradley Wiggins will add sparkle to the 20th Commonwealth Games that got under way in Glasgow on Wednesday (July 23). The biggest ever multisport event to take place in Scotland will see more than 4,000 athletes from 71 nations, 53 of which make up the Commonwealth of Nations – the rest made up of British overseas territories or dependencies, take part in 17 sports over 11 days, with 261 medals. Bolt, one of world sport’s biggest stars, looks add Commonwealth gold to his six Olympic and eight World Championship gold medals. Away from track, the Tour de France’s loss will be the CGames’ gain as Wiggins will represent England in the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome in the 4,000m team pursuit on Thursday (July 24). Wiggi ns became a global star after he competed at the CGames in 2002, with four Olympic gold medals and a win in the 2012 Tour de France making him arguably the most recognisable face in his sport. Rungravee makes U-turn, apologises to coach Choi MARTIAL ARTS H AV I NG DEM A N DED that national taekwondo coach Choi Young Seok apologise to her, fighter Rungravee Khurasa instead will today do it to the Korean. “I want to apologise to coach Choi,” the 23-year-old exponent said last Tuesday (July 22). She said she wanted to return to the national team and would discuss the matter with Choi and officials from the Taekwondo Association of Thailand. Rungravee claimed on her Facebook page and on TV that she was punched about
Thailand Taekwondo coach Choi Young Seok 10 times by Choi after her defeat in her first match at the Korea Open earlier this month. Ru ng ravee, who won bronze at last month’s Asian Championships, also said she
would quit the national team. The athlete said last week that she criticised Choi’s harsh punishment because she was angry at that time. “I love taekwondo and I have been in the sport since
I was a Grade 10 student,” Rungravee said. Rungravee is one of 20 Thai fighters vying for 12 spots at the Asian Games in September. The coach said he did punish her because she lacked discipline at the Korea Open when she arrived late to the event, but did not punch her. Choi returned to Thailand to a ‘hero’s welcome’ at Suvarnabhumi airport last Sunday (July 20) when he was greeted by hundreds of fans. “I am here now because my players are waiting for me. More importantly, I have to try to reach my goal of helping Thailand win an Olympic gold medal.’’
Under Choi, the Thai taekwondo team has claimed two bronzes and one silver at the Olympics. He turned down lucrative offers from other countries and gets B200,000 a month from the TAT, with only a gentlemen’s contract, and has not received a pay rise since 2006. TAT vice-president Preecha Tortrakul said that from now on, players and their parents would be informed about disciplinary rules. Preecha, who brought Choi to Thailand in 2002, said Choi must also be cautious about his punishment of his athletes, particularly women. Bangkok Post

Golden Boot winner Rodriguez to Madrid FOOTBALL
R
eal Madrid last Tuesday (July 22) signed Colombian striker James Rodriguez, the top scorer at the World Cup, from Monaco on a six season contract. Spanish media said Real paid about €80 million (B3.4 billion) for Rodriguez, making him one of the most expensive players ever. Neither club gave a figure, but Monaco said it was “one of the biggest transfers in football history”. Rodriguez, 23, scored six goals for Colombia at the World Cup to win the Golden Boot award. A spectacular volley against Uruguay went down as one of the best goals of any World Cup. “The dream already is REAL. Happy to be part of the best club in the world,” he wrote in a Twitter message after the deal was announced. The Colombian striker is Real’s second major signing in five days as they prepare for a new season of confrontation against eternal rivals Barcelona. German midfielder Toni Kroos moved from Bayern Munich the previous Thursday (July 17), just days after the 24-year-old helped Germany win the World Cup.

Navas plays with Levante in the Spanish first division. Rodriguez had only been at Monaco for one year but his sizzling performance at
the World Cup made him the number one target for many European clubs. Rodriguez prides himself most in having been dubbed ‘El Pibe Nueva’ (the New Kid) in place of Carlos Valderrama, Colombia’s star of the 1990s, who was called ‘El Pibe’. “It’s an honour to be con-
sidered the heir to ‘El Pibe’ at my age,” he told FIFA.com. “Since I was little, I admired Valderrama and I always wanted to be like him. He was my hero and I am proud to wear the number 10 for Colombia while helping the national team return to the World Cup.” AFP
MANCHESTER UNITED are prepared to break transfer records in order to give new manager Louis van Gaal the players he wants, according to executive vicechairman Ed Woodward. The team have already spent over £50 million (B2.7 billion) on England left-back Luke Shaw and Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera, and Woodward says that they are ready to spend even more. Asked if United were able to pay a similar amount Real Madrid paid for James Rodriguez, Woodward said: “It is in our capabilities. The club are not afraid of doing that – spending significant amounts of money in the transfer market.” United are rebuilding under Van Gaal after a dismal 2013-14 season and Woodward says that in the context, the club will have no qualms about sanctioning big-money signings.
“Whether it’s a record or not doesn’t really resonate with us,” he added, in comments reported by the British media on Wednesday. “What resonates is a top, top elite player that the manager wants that is going to be a star for Manchester United. We are in a very strong financial position. We can make big signings. United have been linked with many players in recent weeks, including German centre-back Mats Hummels, Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen, and the Dutch trio of Daley Blind, Stefan de Vrij and Kevin Strootman. Woodward endured a trying first close-season last year, when United missed out on a several major targets, and he admits he still needs to prove his worth to the club’s supporters. “Can’t expect credibility from day one and I wouldn’t ask that of fans. You keep learning on the job and I’ll continue to learn for a long period of time. AFP

Life’s good as Rosberg coasts to German win FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP leader Nico Rosberg completed the happiest two weeks of his life last Sunday (July 20) when he won the German Grand Prix. On a day of home celebrations, Rosberg cruised to an accomplished victory for Mercedes to increase his lead ahead of Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton in this year’s championship to 14 points. “It’s an amazing feeling to win at home. It’s a very special day. This weekend with pole and the win is awesome. I didn’t expect such a big advantage in the race,” said Rosberg. The 29-year-old German, son of original flying Finn and 1982 champion Keke Rosberg, came home a comfortable winner 20.7 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas of Williams. It was the Williams team’s 300th podium finish in Formula One and confirmed
their recovery from a long period in the doldrums as a front-running outfit again. Bottas, who was third in Austria and second at Silverstone two weeks ago, became the first Williams driver to record three successive podium finishes since Juan Pablo Montoya in 2003. Hamilton came home third just 1.8 seconds behind Bottas, ahead of defending fourtime champion Sebastian Vettel, two-time champion Fernando Alonso, and Australian Daniel Ricciardo. Rosberg’s win, also his first podium appearance at a German race, came after a week in which he married his girlfriend Vivian Sibold, signed an extended contract with Mercedes and celebrated Germany’s World Cup victory. Rosberg now has 190 points and leads Hamilton on 176 by 14 points while Bottas’ brilliant effort helped Williams overtake Ferrari in the constructors’ championship, rising to third behind Mercedes and Red Bull. Emerald EPL Master Tour announces big August weekend >page 31
Euro club to play Phuket FC in historic first for the island FOOTBALL
W
hen the opening w h i s t l e bl ow s for Phuket FC’s match-up against Spanish La Liga club UD Almeria on August 6, it will mark the first time a top-flight European club competitively graces the Phuket pitch. The match, which will take place at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town (7pm kick-off), will signal a big step in the island’s footballing venture. UD Almeria’s recent addition of Thai national team superstar Teerasil Daengda, who will also take to the field on August
6, is just another reason that Phuket FC management and local officials are salivating at the future of football on the island. “This match is one that Phuket and Thai football fans have been waiting for. We are very lucky to have this opportunity of watching world-class players at Surakul Stadium,” said Chairman Pamuke Achariyachai in a media statement. “Phuket FC players and staff will gain invaluable experience from competing in the match so that we can improve ourselves to be in the top rank of Thai football.” Team officials met with
major sponsors of the event and Gov Maitri Inthusut at Provincial Hall in Phuket Town to discuss the historic match and possible events surrounding the game. “We will be a good host to them and I’m quite sure that we would impress everyone by our friendship and good tourist attractions,” Gov Maitri said. The match is part of the “LFP World Challenge by Chang”, the Spanish league’s effort to promote La Liga overseas and includes friendly matches against local clubs in Europe Asia as well as North and South America until mid-2016. Chairman Pamuke hopes
the inclusion of Daengda will spur local youth footballers to take the game more seriously. “I’m sure that Teerasil Daengda is going to be an inspiration for children and Thai youth who play football to develop themselves and become a professional in the future,” he said. Just four days after the August 6 event, a team of former English Premier League players will take on a team of Thailand legends, also at Surakul Stadium, marking a big week of football for Phuke in early August. Class Act Media is a proud media partner of “LFP World Challenge by Chang”.
Thai national team player Teerasil Daengda, a recent addition to UD Almeria, will play against Phuket FC on Aug. 6.
New Zealand seek to extend rugby sevens stranglehold RUGBY SEVENS NEW ZEALAND WILL seek to extend their stranglehold on the Commonwealth Games rugby sevens for a fifth successive time when it gets under way at Ibrox Stadium tomorrow (July 26), their bid boosted by the absence of arch-rivals Fiji. The All Blacks have won all four previous Commonwealth sevens tournaments, dating back to the Jonah Lomu-inspired triumph in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, and have since dominated the IRB Sevens World Series of a sport which will be included in the Rio Olympics in 2016.
The Fijians will not be in Scotland, however, having missed qualification after the late inclusion of their country in the multi-sport event. Despite their absence, there is a formidable line-up of teams that turn out on the IRB world circuit. Reigning champions New Zealand have been drawn in Pool A alongside Canada, Nigeria and tournament hosts Scotland. Silver medallists four years ago, Australia, and bronze medallists South Africa are top seeds in pools D and B respectively, while other World Series regulars in Samoa, England, Kenya, Wales and Canada will be determined
to challenge the dominance of the mighty Sevens All Blacks. In addition, unheralded teams from Malaysia, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uganda will take part. Stalwart DJ Forbes, along with Sherwin Stowers and Tim Mikkelson plus World Cup winners Declan O’Donnell and Pita Ahki, headline the New Zealand team coached by veteran Gordon Tietjens. “Winning a gold medal at a Commonwealth Games is very special,” said Tietjens. “There is nothing better than seeing a player being presented with a gold medal and listening to the anthem.
