The sepid wastewater was spotted by beachgoers last Wednesday (Nov 16), and reported to The Phuket News. “We will use a backhoe to fix that problem soon,” MaAnn Samran,

Chief of the Cherng Talay Tambon Administration Organisation (OrBorTor), told The Phuket News reporters he called to his office to respond in person to the issue. Mr MaAnn did not elaborate on how a backhoe would stem the flow of wastewater onto the beach. He did, however, confirm that the B320-million project initiated in 2012 to expand the sewage system in the area and install a wastewater-treatment plant had yet to come onstream.

“The project is about 80 per cent complete, we are now only waiting for the Phuket Governor to sign approval for Phase II of the project,” he said. As promised in January, Mr MaAnn confirmed that Cherng Talay OrBorTor trucks were pumping wastewater from Surin and Bang Tao beaches every day at 10am, 1pm and 2pm. “This is only a temporary measure. The wastewater will go through filtration treatment and be stored at a

treatment plant until we’re ready to treat it fully and release it elsewhere,” he said. She told The Phuket News that many people had complained to the Cherng Talay OrBorTor about wastewater being pumped onto Surin Beach over the past two years. “The issue has not yet been resolved despite the president of the OrBorTor telling residents that there is an ongoing project to solve the problem,” she said. “I want to know whether the OrBorTor is really doing the project, or whether they just said they were as a way of addressing unrelenting complaints from local residents and business operators.”

74-year-old woman was taken into police custody on Monday (Nov 21) when she was found to be in possession of 58 kilograms of kratom. The arrest came following raids on two properties in the Saphan Ruam community in Rassada. At 10am on Monday, personnel from the 41st Military Circle led by chief of peace and order operations Maj Sathit Naikul together with defence volunteers led by Phuket District Office official Wiratdej Boonriangkhao raided two homes in Moo Baan Saphan Ruam Soi 6 after receiving a tip-off that the home owners had been selling drugs to local teenagers. Following the raids, it was announced that 58.5kg of kratom, 45 bottles of cough syrup and B13,000 in cash had been seized and one arrest made. from Khon Kaen and that she has no income. She and the home owner know each other and she looks after the house when the owner is away. She admitted that she sometimes helps sell kratom for the owner which she sells for B200 per set (two bundles of leaves and one bottle of cough syrup). “When we went to the other address (No. 30) there was nobody there to open the door so we asked a neighbour to

contact the owner. The owner still refused to cooperate, so the neighbour gained access to the property and during our search we found more kratom leaves, both fresh and cooked,” he added. Ms Jai was taken to Phuket City Police Station where she was to be questioned further. Police will also issue a summons for both homeowners to come to the police station to face charges.

Beach vendors file encroachment complaint MORE THAN 20 BEACH vendors from Nai Yang filed a complaint at the Damrongdhama Centre (Ombudsman’s Office) at Provincial Hall on Monday (Nov 21) requesting that officials investigate a land claimant who has allegedly not only refused to remove structures from the beach for the past two years, but has also added more.

Amnoy Pongtoy, 50, explained that the area in question covers five rai and now has a restaurant, spa and accommodation built upon it. The claimant to the land, Dang Laolang, was requested in September 2014 by officials from Sakoo Tambon Administration Office (OrBorTor) and the military to remove all illegal structures from the

site as per orders issued by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). “Officials declared that the buildings were illegal because they were built without permits. He also confirmed that a further 23 suspects are still at large. During a recent face-toface interview with The Phuket News reporters, Thalang Police Chief Col Somphong Thiparpakul said that so far police had arrested 63 suspects wanted in connection with the riots in Thalang in October last year. The riots were the worst street violence Phuket had seen in decades. Half a dozen police officers were treated for injuries while over twenty vehicles were vandalised by angry rioters who had encircled the Thalang Police Station in retaliation for the death of two teenagers on Oct 15 last year. During the interview last Wednesday (Nov 16), Col Somphong explained, “A total of 86 arrest warrants were issued for suspects involved in

Moscow flight grounded by crunching stairs accident INVESTIGATIONS ARE still ongoing into how much damage was caused to an Aeroflot plane involved in an incident prior to take-off from Phuket International Airport on Monday night last week (Nov 14). The incident resulted in the Moscow-bound f light being cancelled. “At 9:30pm on Monday (Nov 14) an airport engineer was called to look into an incident and check damage caused to an Aeroflot plane’s door, which was said to have been damaged by airplane passenger stairs,” an airport staffer, who asked not to be named, told The Phuket News last Friday (Nov 18). The incident affected Aeroflot flight SU274/275. “As a quick-fix solution the engineer forced closed the door so that it would stay shut. “Following this, the Aeroflot Maintenance Control Center (MCC) was called in to move the Boeing 777 to the aircraft stand so that the damage could be assessed,” the staffer said. “We can confirm that @thephuketnews

However, the family and friends of one of the suspects, Uthai Suklien, disputes that Mr Uthai was involved in the riots at all. They say is a scapegoat for the unrest. A post on the Facebook page of Wipaporn Tawongsri on Nov 10 noted that even officers from Thalang Police Station had confirmed that CCTV images caught of a man with tattoos was not Mr Uthai. The post also stated that Mr Uthai was one man who had an arrest warrant issued for him and that his family must come up with B500,000 bail for public prosecutors. It goes on to say that his family is poor and questions how they would be able to find such money to post bail for him. In reply to this, Col Somphong said, “Most suspects arrested in this case would have denied any involvement even if we have hard evidence against them. In the case of Mr

Uthai, he was on the wanted list and I believe investigators had enough evidence to put him on it. I don’t think it is a mistake. “Beside, the suspect caught on CCTV looked exactly like him but with tattoos. Now people are saying that Mr Uthai does not have any tattoos so he is not the person in the CCTV footage. People can remove a tattoo nowadays, some even have temporary tattoos. We just never know. “However, his case is with public prosecutors now and it is up to them to decide. Everything we do must be done in accordance with the law,” he said. “Cases are no longer our responsibility after arrests have been made and details have been sent to the public prosecutors. If the public prosecutor does not want to proceed with the case due to lack of evidence then the case might be dropped. “Whether suspects including Mr Uthai are guilty or not it is up to the court to decide based on evidence collected,” he added.

Police boost checks on buses, trucks POLICE IN KATHU HAVE relaunched a campaign to check the weight of heavy vehicles about to climb over Patong Hill from Kathu. Officers began checking motorists – and fining – traffic law violators at the Kathu Police Checkpoint last Friday (Nov 18). The officers are using a simple weighing device installed in a speed bump that vehicles must drive over in order to pass through the checkpoint, Sen Sgt Maj Tanongsak Churung explained. "Heavy vehicles are not permitted to climb over the steep hills into Patong from 7am-9am and 4pm-7pm on any day," he said. “Traffic on Patong Hill is very busy during these hours, which means traffic moves much slower at these times, and this greatly increases the danger of larger vehicles not being able to climb safely over the hill,” he said. Bun also told police that he was there when Owan attacked Tazae, but that he had actually tried to stop the attack taking place. “When Mr Tazae collapsed Bun said that he was frightened so he took off on a motorbike with Owan. Soon after he dropped Owan at the entrance of the soi,” Col Somnuek said. “Bun said Owan dumped the murder weapon into a canal next to the camp,” he added. The incident occurred on Phra Baramee Rd, in front of the Sea Pearl Resort on Patong Hill, at 10:23pm The bus was carrying 19 tourists at the time. Police led by Maj Teerasak Boonsang arrived at the scene with Kusoldharm rescue workers to find a tour bus rammed into a power pole on a retaining wall in front of the resort. The two injured motorists – Nattachai Chanmala, 33, and his passenger Ratchanok Masjula, 22 – were still

Big biker rear-ends bus, hospitalised A 33-Y EA R- OLD M A N was taken to hospital last Sunday night (Nov 20) after he crashed his big bike into a bus parked on the side of the road in Koh Kaew. Phuket City Police Lt Surachart Thongyai was notified at 5am that a motorcyclist had been injured when he crashed into the back of a parked bus near the entrance of Soi Koh Kaew 29 off Thepkrasattri Rd northbound. Lt Surachart arrived at the scene with Kusoldhram rescue workers to find a damaged Kawasaki lying on the road behind a tour bus.

The driver of the motorbike driver, named by police as 33-year-old Piyapong Sawasdee, had suffered scrapes all over his body as a result of the crash. He was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital after receiving first aid at the scene. Lt Surachart said, “Witnesses said that the motorbike slammed heavily into the back of the bus which had been parked at the side of the road overnight. pointed out that the forced evictions threatened sea gypsies’ traditional way of life. “The tourism industry is greatly affecting sea gypsies’ traditional lifestyle, too,” he added. Phuket Vice Governor Snith Sriwihok was at the event, but said that he was present only so that he could report results from the proceedings to Phuket Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan on Monday (Nov 21).

“This is a very complicated issue, and many of the issues raised are to be passed on to the Ministry of Culture for consideration,” V/Gov Snith told The Phuket News. However, V/Gov Snith declined to present his personal opinion on the issues sea gypsies are facing. “I can’t give my own opinion about them. It is a sensitive issue, but I am ready to take action. My job is to help people,” he said.

Builder under fire for reef project THE PHUKET MARINE Office has filed a formal police complaint against a contractor for dumping rocks and sand onto a beach at the northern tip of the island while it was carrying out an artificial reef project for the Phuket Fisheries Office. Borpith Chomchiey, a transport specialist at the Phuket Marine Office, filed the complaint against Pattanimahaphan Construction Co Ltd directly with Tha Chatchai Police Deputy Superintendent Lt Col Watcharin Jirattikanwiwat on Tuesday (Nov 22). The complaint was filed after Mr Borpith and other marine officials inspected the site and found rocks and sand dumped on the beach beside a floating barge with a tugboat tied up alongside. On shore were three artificial reef blocks. In his statement to police, Mr Borpit alleged the company did not have a permit to resurface the land and build a pier at the site. As such, he accused the company of breaching the Navigation in Thai Waters Act of 1913. Mr Borpith asked police to investigate and bring the person responsible for the

Mr Sulaimarn had simply posted photos of a Daily News story alleging that a backhoe was digging up Mai Khao Beach. “We arrived at the site and discovered that they had deposited rocks and soil in the area by the sea. When we inspected the area, we noticed

the marine environment had been damaged by the debris. I ordered the contractor to temporarily stop work until it was all sorted out,” OrBorTor Chief Mr Sarawuth said. “The workers there told me that the contractor was hired by the Phuket Fisheries Office to load artificial reef blocks onto the barge. They were using machinery to resurface the area to form a pier so loading would be easier,” he explained. “Creating artificial reefs is good for our marine life, but the process must not destroy the surrounding environment. What goes around, comes around

he gathering of sea gypsies at Rawai Beach last Sunday (Nov 20) brought forward a rare moment of honesty among officials in Phuket, albeit by a lone admission that they simply did not know enough about issues the island’s indigenous people were facing. The bare fact that Phuket Vice Governor Snith Sriwihok was honest enough to say that he was there only to learn, not offer his opinion, and he was to report what the sea gypsies had to say to Phuket Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan, speaks greatly of both men. Rarely does Phuket witness such an admission from highranking officials, even about such a topic that has gained headlines around the world. And to be truthful, it is not their fault. The annual transfers of Governors and other high-ranking officials around

the country each October is aimed at ensuring that no highranking provincial officials are in one province long enough that they are effectively left to their own devices to develop their “network of contacts”, business or otherwise. The downside side is that each October a new Governor lands in Phuket, along with new Vice Governors, who all very likely have no idea of the range of issues at play on the island, or the long history behind them. They simply do not know enough to come up with any sensible solution. This is not to excuse them from attempting to resolve problems once they learn about them, but at least they are learning about the problems before forcing a “solution” that no-one wanted. The same system of annual transfers is claimed to be used by the Royal Thai Police, but

a little further investigation reveals that is not really the case. At least with Phuket, they rarely venture far from this profitable isle – and if they do leave, they soon return. The list of Phuket police transferring out only to return again goes on and on, with most transferred only as far as Phang Nga before heading back. How effective this has been for the police is a matter of public opinion. But all this leads to one simple question: W hat’s worse? Keeping people in Phuket long enough that they might exploit their positions of power, or keep shifting them so they have little experience with the issues to be resolved, and likely won’t be around to be held accountable for them after they’re long gone? Looking at the effectiveness of the examples above, your guess is as good as ours.

Remember, Phuket has only one destination to sell and if you want successfully sell a product like tourism and hospitality, you have to sell what your customers want and not what you would like as your

Samet beset by graft, probe finds RAYONG

ational park authorities have launched a crackdown on businesses controlled by mafia groups on Koh Samet in Rayong province worth over B100 million a month. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) is also taking legal action against inf luential groups on the resort island, said the DNP’s Marine National Park Management Director Natthaphon Rattanaphan. The crackdown comes after DNP director-general Thanya Netitham mak un signed a transfer order for the Khao Laem Ya-Moo Koh Samet National Park chief, and 79 other officials, in September following a probe into corruption practices. Earlier, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Gen Surasak Karnjanarat said he wanted order restored to the island. A panel was also launched to probe two former national park heads and other officials thought to be involved with malpractice.

German nabbed for growing cannabis HUA HIN A GERMAN MAN WAS arrested on Tuesday (Nov 22) for allegedly growing more than 200 marijuana plants at his home. Soldiers and policemen, led by Hua Hin District Chief Roojpratheep Thammarapeepat, raided the house of the 46-year-old known by the Thai-German name Zher Kanogkhamsin at Moo 7 of Ban Sai Ngarm in Nong Plub sub-district on Tuesday afternoon. The raid came after police working undercover bought cannabis from Mr Zher. Officials searched the @thephuketnews

13-rai-property and found a marijuana plantation consisting of 200 small plants less than five centimetres high and another 43 plants about 50-80cm high being grown separately around the house. The higher ones were cultivated in the same space as vegetables. The team seized 1.5 kilograms of compressed marijuana along with some cannabis seeds, cannabis-infused whiskey and paraphernalia. Postal boxes were also found which led authorities to believe Mr Zher may have delivered cannabis to his customers in other provinces. The team also seized his car and motorcycle to check if they were ill-gotten gains.

Mr Zher, who has lived in Thailand more than 10 years and can speak Thai fluently, allegedly confessed he had grown the plants and other cannabis items belonged to him. But he claimed he had used them for medical purposes, such as for curing headache and making cancer drugs. By the 1999 Narcotic Regulation Act, possession of up to 10kg of marijuana carries the maximum sentence of five years in prison and/or a fine of up to B50,000. Possession of 10kg or more is considered having it with intent to sell and the penalties range from 2-15 years in prison and/or a fine of B20,000 to B150,000. Bangkok Post

The gangs would send their members to piers to collect money from tourists. About 60 per cent was handed over to corrupt park officials and the rest to the gangs. The investigation also found B200,000 a month was paid to some Khao Laem Ya-Moo Koh Samet National Park officials. The act was a form of malpractice as the authorities exploited the country’s natural resources to benefit themselves. Since the transfer of officials, Mr Natthaphon said revenue at the national park had increased, rising four times last month to B4.8mn, compared to B1.2mn in the same month last year, even though it was low season. Mr Natthaphon said several operators on the island had called during the crackdown, saying they know influential figures including high-ranking police, military officers and politicians. He insisted the suppression drive would carry on, pledging to restore Koh Samet as an island for the public. Bangkok Post

The announcement came after Australian police informed Thai authorities that some groups of Thais were providing financial support to the IS. Australian police also found that over 100,000 Facebook users from Thailand visited IS-related online communities over the past year. Thai authorities had previously consistently denied any connections between Thais and the IS. Until now, insurgents in the South have refused to establish any links with foreign pro-terrorist groups, including al-Qaeda and the Jemaah Islamiyah group. in Bangkok. Deputy National Police Chief Srivara Ransibrahmanakul said the information provided by Australian police was part of a probe which had linked some Thais to the radical Islamist group.

Australia has not commented publicly on the claim by Thai police. But the deputy national police chief insisted Australians had informed Thai authorities that “some Thais” have frequently travelled back and forth between Thailand and Syria. It was determined that those people lived in areas under the jurisdiction of Provincial Police Region 9 which covers the southern provinces of Songkhla, Satun, Trang and Phatthalung, and the Southern Border Provinces Police Operation Centre which is responsible for the southern border provinces of Pattani, Narathiwat and Yala, Gen Srivara said. He did not say how it had been determined. But Gen Srivara said police from the Central Investigation Bureau and the Special Branch Police have been instructed to investigate the matter and will report the findings to

the government. He did not say who issued the order for an investigation. Gen Srivara added police have been analysing the user names of the Facebook users which are being divided into six groups. He declined to reveal further details, only saying some of them may be IS sympathisers. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday said authorities were identifying the suspects and were prepared to take preventive measures and arrest anyone involved. “The whole world is affected by the IS threat. Every country is facing this problem,” he said. Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon said the Special Branch Police and Immigration Bureau have been ordered to take precautions, adding Asean countries already have a cooperation agreement to counter terrorism. “Those Thais may just want to follow IS information without giving financial support to the group,” said Gen Prawit. Meanwhile, Apichart Suriboonya, commander of the Royal Thai Police’s foreign affairs division on Tuesday spoke at the UN General Assembly, representing Thailand and the Royal Thai Police. Expressing support for a draft resolution on cooperation between the UN and the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol), Maj Gen Apichart told the gathering that Thailand and the Royal Thai Police had been asked by Interpol to join Switzerland, Rwanda, Jordan and Jamaica to support the resolution on fighting transnational crime.

Maj Gen Apichart said that transnational crime and terrorism are expanding rapidly in an increasingly connected world, and stressed that combating these threats should not be restricted to police and state security officials. It is important to enlist cooperation from the civil sector and the private sector to boost efforts in tackling these challenges, he said, adding that intelligence operations will support these efforts. He also said t he U N should put in place mechanisms to channel information to combat transnational crime and terrorism directly to authorities at operational levels. This information should not be left in the hands of high-level officials for too long as a quick response to these threats is necessary so as to keep any damage to a minimum, he said. He added Interpol has such a mechanism – a communications network which covers 190 countries and is being extended to reach operational-level officials in several countries, including Thailand. With this network, Thai police have arrested up to 55 transnational crime suspects wanted by Interpol over the past three years, Maj Gen Apichairt said. The 193 member states of the UN later unanimously voted in support of the draft resolution. After the vote, Maj Gen Apichart said the communications network will become more formal and will serve as the main channel for UN member states to share intelligence to combat transnational crime and terrorism.

Transplanting for free

Pakistani doctor caring for hundreds of thousands each year PAKISTAN

amped on the baking concrete outside a gleaming transplant centre, Karachi’s sick have come from miles around in desperate hope for a last chance at life. There, Dr Adibul Rizvi provides free medical care to hundreds of thousands of people each year, providing a much-needed alternative to Pakistan’s public health sector, which critics dismiss as chaotic, corrupt and vastly under-resourced. Rizvi, with a thatch of white hair as springy as his step, roams the crowded halls of his life’s work every day from 8am until midnight or later, visiting the bedsides of patients – children, criminals, VIPs alike. At 79 he is fuelled by love of his job, his enthusiasm evident as he recounts his 42-year odyssey from starting with an eight-bed ward to building one of the largest treatment networks in South Asia.

His Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) is funded largely by charitable donations, some as small as $1 (B35) at a time, and has treated millions of people over the last four decades. More than 300 transplants and 260,000 dialysis sessions were carried out in 2015 alone, with follow-up treatments and medications provided for as long as it takes – all entirely for free. “Governments in a de-

veloping country... they cannot afford a state-of-the-art health service,” says Rizvi, describing the unimaginable poverty that staff in some of his 10 health centres across the country encounter. The government does give money, its funding accounts for some 30 per cent of SIUT’s budget, but not enough to fulfil Rizvi’s philosophy that “every human being... has got a right to access healthcare, to live with dignity”. to get the clerics on his side. “Luckily they all agreed... that organ donation is quite Islamic and should be done,” he says – though with the caveats that all heirs must agree to the donation, and that a Muslim’s organs could not be transplanted into the body of a non-Muslim. Even so, a lack of awareness in Pakistan about the value of organ donation is “pushing back our progress”, Rizvi admits. Pak istanis who enter SIUT’s main centre in Karachi are taken aback by its spotlessness and efficiency, traits virtually absent in many of the country’s other hospitals. In a bright paediatric ward the young patients receive dialysis, resting on white sheets set off by sky-blue walls painted with cheerful murals. Roaming the ward is medical social worker Sanober Ambreen, who describes her job as keeping the patients “calm and cool” throughout the uncomfortable procedure

with music classes, paintings, even talent quests. Children face an added hurdle: coming to the hospital at least twice a week for hours on end can see them drop out of school entirely, she says. Diminutive 17-year-old Hina Hameed, lying in her bed in a corner of the ward, is one of them. She has been on dialysis since she was four and quit school in seventh grade. “I wish I could resume my studies,” she says, vowing to do so if she ever gets a transplant. “I want to become whatever my mother and father dream for me.” Bustling through the hospital, Rizvi insists he has achieved nothing yet, and vows to take on no less an enemy than cancer itself next, calling it “doable”. He brushes off any suggestion of retirement. “My colleagues, they are working (the) same way. Most of them have become hypertensive, I have not,” he laughs. AFP

rom the Black Death to Henry VIII’s break from Rome, a historic medieval refuge in the heart of London’s throbbing financial centre is destined for a new lease of life – by allowing women to move in. Nestled between building sites in the City of London, Charterhouse’s grey stone is the abode of a few dozen men who have to be poor and aged over 60 to qualify. But hundreds of years since the first stone was laid, a revolution is underway: Charterhouse is opening up to women and creating a museum open to the public. “Not everyone is overjoyed,” Stephen McGhee, a former orchestra manager and one of the current “brothers”, said during a media visit to the complex. “Some were happy, some not so happy. Whatever happens, it will have to be done very sensitively... and the newcomers will have to adapt to 42 men!”

Photo: Matt Brown/Flickr After living abroad for more than two decades, first in Australia and then Thailand, McGhee said he wanted to return to London for his retirement. “I had just enough money to buy a cupboard in a kitchen,” the 64-year-old said. He searched online for a solution. “I saw a picture, there was a vacancy for a brother. I thought: ‘it is a holy place and I am not holy!’ “I applied online, I had

a formal interview, and I was accepted,” said McGhee, happy with his good fortune, after three-and-a-half years living within the community. Leaving the chaos of the City and crossing over the threshold into Charterhouse feels like entering a different world – a few centuries in the past. Some of the darkest moments in British history were played out within its walls. Charterhouse’s monastery was built in 1371 on

land which was used to bury victims of the “Black Death”, the bubonic plague which decimated London in 1348. Those struck down by the plague were still being exhumed in 2013, said Dominic Tickell, development director at Charterhouse. The friars lived in silence but broke their rule for 10 days in the 16th century, to debate Henry VIII’s break with the Pope. The dramatic split from Rome in 1535 led to the monastery being dissolved

and its friars put to death in an atrocious manner. The land on which the men once lived was passed to the Duke of Norfolk, who built a cloister and a palace. The Duke, too, met a violent end – he was decapitated for high treason in 1571. The Charterhouse complex was reinvented in the 17th century when it was bought by the wealthy Thomas Sutton, who founded a school, a hospital and a home for 80 impoverished gentlemen. The latter tradition continues, while the school was moved to Surrey in the 19th century where it is now a private boarding school. London’s Charterhouse today hosts 42 “brothers” who are chosen not for their religious affiliation but under strict criteria. They must be over 60, single, poor, prepared to live in a community and to be in good enough health to live independently. The majority of residents are artists, actors or musicians, but there are also teachers, a cook, a butcher and a priest. Actors living in Charter-

house take every opportunity to return to the stage, giving up their earnings for the community, McGhee said. “Most of them are vulnerable, lonely, isolated, poor, in social need and in good health. One of the criteria is that people can still make a contribution,” Tickell said during the media visit. While Tudor tragedies are centuries past, the stone walls, low ceilings and stained-glass windows retain a sense of mystery. Charterhouse benefits financially from its school fees – nearly £37,000 (B1.6 million) annually for each boarding pupil – and from its donors. Governors of the London institution include Queen Elizabeth II, her husband the Duke of Edinburgh, and their son the Prince of Wales, in addition to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Charterhouse also has a specialist nursing home for those approaching the end of their lives. “It is very rare that a brother leaves; almost all end their days here,” said Tickell. AFP

Vintage biplanes cross skies over Africa, land in Khartoum SUDAN A DOZEN BIPLANES TAKing part in a vintage air rally bound for Cape Town arrived in Sudan’s capital last weekend, with one participant walking away from a bad landing. The aircraft, dating from the 1920s and 1930s, took off on November 12 from the Greek island of Crete on their 13,000-kilometre journey to Cape Town. It is the largest group of vintage biplanes to attempt the journey across Africa, with teams from a dozen countries including Britain, Canada, France, Germany, South Africa and the United States. British pilot Maurice Kirk, 72, known as the Flying Vet, walked away from a hard landing in his Piper Cub at Khartoum airport, organisers said. He had only joined the rally early last Sunday, despite his Piper Cub not being a vintage biplane, and his plane had to be towed off the runway after the mishap. “He had a bad landing. His

Today was the first day he had joined us.” Kirk has experienced several mishaps in the past, including in 2008 when he crashed in the Caribbean. He was rescued then by US coastguards, and to express his gratitude he later dropped in on the Texas ranch of former US president George Bush.

“He’s an adventurer... his plane needs a bit of repairing now,” Martin said. The vintage aircraft will join an air show in Khartoum on Monday (Nov 21), and after Sudan they fly to Ethiopia and other African states before the rally ends on December 17 in Cape Town. ourism and Sports Mi nister Kobkar n Wattanavrangkul has sounded an updated forecast on Russian arrivals to The Land of Smiles in 2016. In a recent interview for Russian TASS agency, Ms Kobkarn said that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MoTS) expects 31-per-cent growth year-onyear in arrivals. “As for the forecasts, there is every reason to believe that by the year’s end tourist flow from Russia will reach 1.15 million visitors. Year-on-year growth is expected to exceed 31%,” Minister Kobkarn told TASS. Earlier this year the Tourism Authority of Thailand

Previously, Pattaya used to be the main destination for them. Now they are discovering the Southern provinces for themselves. Thus Phuket is highly popular, after visiting which, maybe, many would love to go to Krabi province,” Ms Kobkarn said. Russian arrivals to Thailand breached the one-million mark for the first time in 2011 and totalled 1.32mn in 2012. The historical maximum was reached in 2013 when Thailand welcomed over 1.74mn visitors from Russia. Since

then arrivals had been on the decline, until the recovery began in February this year. Last week, Russian Association of Tour Operators (ATOR) reported that Thailand lists high among the most popular New Year destinations for Russian tourists benefiting from zero competition from Egypt, flights to which were banned by the Russian government last year. ATOR’s members include Russian tourism powerhouses Biblio Globus, Coral Travel, Intourist, Natalie Tours, Pegas Touristik and TUI Travel. “In recent years Egypt used to be number one on the list of the so-called ‘winter sun’ destinations. Thus now the list is topped by destinations that can offer a relative alternative to Egypt,” said ATOR Executive Director Maya Lomidze.

rom the time Donald Trump announced his candidacy, no one in the media or the general public really took him seriously. After all, that speech on the escalator at Trump Tower insulted immigrants in general, and Mexican immigrants specifically. Surely, such a person could never get elected to the most powerful job in the world? We all know the answer to that question, and the man known as “The Donald” now goes by the moniker “President-Elect Trump”. Regardless of your political affiliation (or nationality), this regime change at the White House will affect you. Like it or not, major events in America tend to affect the global markets, as well as the world economy. So what are the possible economic ramifications of a Trump presidency? TAXATION Donald Trump (and most Republicans, for that matter) are proponents of Supply Side Economics – the theory that states when taxes on the wealthy are too high it curtails hiring, but if those taxes are cut the money magically trickles down to the rest of the economy. Bush coined the phrase “Voodoo Economics” for this now fully discredited school of thought. When taxes are cut on the wealthy, the money simply never trickles down. This is not a political opinion, but an economic fact. If the CEO of Wal-Mart or Apple were forced to pay a top personal tax rate of 50 per cent, or even 60%, would it impact the hiring decisions at those companies? No. In fact, during the period when America’s middle class was “born” (1930s-1960s) the top tax rate ranged between 74% and 91%… and the economy thrived. The enduring legacy of those tax cuts is the $20-trillion US National Debt (which was less than US$1 trillion

when Reagan took office in 1981). Donald Trump’s platform contains more tax cuts, so expect the debt to rise, but don’t expect any of that money to trickle down SPENDING

Donald Trump has proposed massive infrastructure spending to repair America’s roads and bridges, the maintenance of which have largely been ignored for years. If Trump is successful at passing some kind of infrastructure program, it would likely be a “big league” success. After all, the federal government has already claimed a number of similar success stories in its history. Roosevelt’s New Deal included massive infrastructure

spending in the 1930s; government spending on WWII in the 1940s was another shot in the arm to the economy; and Eisenhower’s federal highway system carried the policy of federal government-funded public works projects into the 1950s. Back then, however, there was the aforementioned 91% top tax rates to help fund these endeavours. Infrastructure spending, combined with significant tax cuts, would further balloon the debt. GLOBAL TRADE It is common practice for presidential candidates to “talk tough on trade”, and Trump was no exception. He vowed to build a wall on the border with Mexico

(and make Mexico pay for it); bring China before the WTO for currency manipulation; renegotiate NAFTA; tear up the TPP; and improve relations with Vladimir Putin and Russia. Trade Wars have never ended well for either side, the most famous example being the Smoot-Hawley Tariffs, signed into law by Herbert Hoover in June, 1930. In the words of former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke: “Economists still agree that Smoot-Hawley and the ensuing tariff wars were highly counterproductive and contributed to the depth and length of the global Depression.” Tough talk by past candidates have come to naught once they took office; let us hope the same is true with Trump.

EQUITY MARKETS Anyone who only looks at daily closing prices might think that equity markets responded well to his election, but as returns began pointing to a Trump victory, the S&P 500 Index futures were trading down as much as -5%, and Asian markets (open for business at the time) were in a tailspin. Conciliatory words in his acceptance speech stabilized stock markets, but it was the uncertainty of what “President Trump” might bring which sent shares reeling. There are many more

speeches to come, but there will also be policies and actions. As he is not a conventional politician, what exactly a Trump Presidency might bring is still uncertain. If there are no real surprises, then there is no reason to believe that the initial reaction of the futures markets will repeat itself. Any actions that “spook” the markets, however, will see investors punished. COMMODITIES AND CURRENCIES

As much as equities dislike uncertainty, precious metals love chaos. As equity and futures markets around the world were plunging on November 8th, gold and silver were soaring. Again, the moderate voice at the podium that night saw everything move in the other direction, but any trade war, international incident, economic crisis, stock market crash, etc. would be good news for metals. Likewise, because uncertainty usually results in a “flight to safety” into US Treasuries, any of the above would normally be accompanied by a strengthening US dollar. However things play out, the new President’s policies will have a profound impact on the economies of every country in the world. Organisers are calling for entries from any talented youths that want their chance to perform live in front of an audience. Spaces are limited to 50 entrants, and although the formal closing date for entries is November 25, the organisers will accept late entries as long as space is available. The contest, which is open to all students in Thailand aged between 8 and 18 years of age, will kick off at 11am on the Sunday morning (Dec 4). Students can enter into one of three categories: Junior Vocals for ages 8 to 12; Senior Vocals for ages 13 to 18; and Senior Instrumentalists for ages 13 to 18.

Fantastic prizes are the same across all three categories, with first-place winners receiving B5,000, studio time for recording and making a video of their music, Rockschool UK Vouchers and more. Global call to end violence against women

oday (Nov 25) the United Nations and civil society will mark the International Day to End Violence against Women. That same day, the UN will kick off 16 days of global activism, until December 10, to halt this gross violation of women’s human rights that affects at least one in three women and girls globally. “It is a pandemic that we must stop. To do so, we need everyone’s help,” said Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN UnderSecretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women. The global initiative “Orange the World: End Violence against Women and Girls” is led by UN Women on behalf of the UN Secretary-General’s global campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women.

The colour orange has been chosen for the issue to symbolize a brighter future without violence against women. During the 16 days of activism buildings and landmarks around the world will be lit in orange. Marches and rallies will mobilise women and men to demand an end to violence against women in countries from Pakistan to Papua New Guinea and Brazil. Everyone has a role in the efforts to end violence against women. Please demonstrate your support by wearing orange on the day and telling people why you are doing so. Choosing a university to suit you Deciding where to study can be hard, so you need all the help you can get

n Thursday, November 16, a total of 36 universities, colleges and higher-education institutions attended the BISP Higher Education Fair, the largest of its type on the island. The Phuket News spoke to British International School Phuket University Counsellor Dale Ford, who together with his colleague Jacqui Brelsford help to make it a success. We spoke to Dale about the ins and outs of applying to universities around the world and how best to prepare for this daunting step. So, 36 universities attended the event? It must take a lot of work to organise. How has the event developed over recent years and what made this year’s special or interesting? This is the third year that BISP has hosted large university fairs. These fairs were held in both October and November to dovetail with other international university events in the region. While BISP University Counsellor Jacqui Brelsford coordinates it, the fair couldn’t happen without help from several members of the BISP community. In addition to allowing students to speak one-on-one with admission officers, several presentations were offered about such topics as what it is like to study hospitality, engineering, business, or art and media, along with university options that exist in different countries. The fact you have other schools attending the event seem to suggest it’s the best of its kind on the island. Are there plans to expand and grow the event to include even more of Phuket’s schools and more universities? We are happy to welcome students and university counsellors from neigh-

What are the main things you hope students get out of this event? We want students to focus on universities that provide a best fit for their interests, abilities, and circumstances. Learning about university and course options around the world helps students make informed decisions when they select, apply and then choose which university to attend. Over the past four years BISP graduates have enrolled in over 100 universities in 19 different countries so it’s important that we welcome universities from around the world to our campus.

What role does the event play in your process of guiding students as to which academic paths to pursue? The process of university counselling at BISP begins well before Year 13. By focusing on academic success, personal growth and exploration beginning in Year 10, students will be more successful in selecting and being admitted to universities. For some universities, especially in the UK, it can be important that students take a specific combination of IB subjects and earn particular scores related to what they want to study. These events can help younger students make appropriate subject choices. In the US, however, it’s more important that students earn good internal marks. In addition, as BISP university counsellors, we attend and speak at international conferences with a goal of deepening the relationships between universities and BISP along with learning about universities and courses that would provide a great fit for our students. Land Rover Asia-Pacific, the luxury car market in Thailand has been as strong as other markets in Southeast Asia, with high demand for both sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and passenger cars. Thai consumers, meanwhile, are open to high-end vehicles because of their rising incomes, Mr Colgan said. “At present, the Thai luxury segment represents roughly 4-5 per cent of the overall car market which I believe has plenty of room to grow, compared with as high as 10% of the total car markets in many developed countries,” he said. Mr Colgan also attributed its sales prospects to the partnership with Inchcape, the British automotive retail and services company, as the new exclusive importer and distributor of Jaguar Land Rover vehicles and parts in Thailand. The company will handle the import and distribution of Jaguar Land Rover vehicles and parts in Thailand. “We will run the sole outlet and service centre on Rama IV Rd to support all Jaguars and Land Rovers in the country, while our partner is conducting a feasibility study looking at expanding the network in major provinces to support sales growth in the future,” Mr Colgan said. As of October, there were 10,437 Land Rovers and 2,340 Jaguars registered in the country. The Jaguar brand is categorised as more premium than Land Rover. From January-October this year, Land Rover sold 41 units, and Jaguar 36. Last year, Land Rover sales totalled 49 units, down sharply from 107 in

2014, while Jaguar sold 73, up from 57 in 2014. Charnchai Mahantakhun, managing director of Inchcape Thailand, said that given Jaguar’s strong sales, the company is set to beef up the brand in the Thai market. Last Thursday (Nov 17), Inchcape introduced the all-new Jaguar FPace SUV with prices in the range of B4.6mn-B5.9mn. Jaguar’s first-ever SUV is arriving on Thai shores with JLR’s new Ingenium diesel engine. The 180hp 2.0-litre unit is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels with torque-vectoring control at the rear. Highlighted features include 22-inch wheels, 12.3inch virtual instrument cluster and electric reclining rear seats. There are two electric motors driving all four wheels and producing 400hp and 700Nm. The primary target of these Euro BEVs is no other than the Tesla Model X.

Mazda’s compact SUV enters its second generation with CX-9 wannabe design cues. The interior may have been redesigned, but the wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,700mm. Zuckerberg urges people to stay ‘connected’ in brave, new world

acebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg last Saturday (Nov 19) called on world leaders to forge a more “connected” planet, something he said was under threat after Donald Trump’s US election win and Britain’s “Brexit” vote. Zuckerberg said in a keynote speech at an Asia-Pacific leaders’ summit that while globalisation and interconnectedness have their problems, the world must fight the urge to “disconnect.” “As we are learning this year in election after election, even if globalisation might (boost) prosperity, it also creates inequality. It helps some people and it hurts others,” he said. The 32-year-old billionaire said there was a “fundamental choice” to make in reacting to that inequality. “We can disconnect, risk less prosperity and hope jobs that are lost come back. Or we can connect more, try to do more great things, try to work on even greater prosperity and then work to aggressively share that prosperity with everyone.” The second option is better, but also harder, he said in his speech at the AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in Lima, Peru. “Disconnecting is relatively easy. But connecting requires making big investments in infrastructure and generating the political will to make hard long-term decisions,” he said.

Facebook has made headlines with its projects on connectivity and internet access. The social network has developed solar-powered drones and a satellite to beam internet service to remote areas. The company has helped more than 40 million people get online, Zuckerberg said. His comments last Saturday came amid deep global uncertainty in the wake of the unexpected poll results in the US and Britain. Trump and the Brexit camp both appealed to working-class voters who feel threatened by globalisation and immigration, running on a populist politics of disillusionment with an increasingly borderless world. Trump vows to protect American jobs from cheaper labour overseas, while Brexit campaigners promise British workers will fare better outside the European Union than in it. Facebook, the world’s largest social network with 1.79 billion users, has been criticised by some as helping Trump to victory by giving a platform to fake election news and extreme-right blogs with untruthful attacks on Trump’s opponent Hillary Clinton. ou have probably seen local restaurants or food carts in your area serving the popular local noodle soup known as yentafo – the soup is bright pink, which makes it hard to miss. This dish is another example of the ready adoption of Chinese noodle dishes into Thai food culture, particularly in places like Phuket with its deep Hokkien-Chinese roots. Its Chinese antecedent is known as yong tau foo and originated among the Hakkaspeaking people of Southern China. During its transition to Thai cuisine the dish has undergone an almost complete transformation, with only its name linking it back to its distant Chinese ancestor. Thai yentafo is characterised by its pink coloured broth, with its unusual colour coming from the unique fermented bean paste used to flavour a pork bone stock base and, more often than not, a dash of food colouring and some chicken blood to liven things up. Like most noodle soup dishes in Thailand, the ingredients can vary. Normally, however, it is served with thick rice noodles but you can usually request any noodle you like. Then a range of other ingredients are added according to the chef’s or diner’s preference. Most often you will get some fish balls, fish cake or squid, some mushroom or fungi, and it will be topped off with a pinch of chopped chives and a won-ton wrapper that has been deep-fried to give it a crisp, crunchy texture and bright yellow colour. As with many Thai dishes, the variations on this theme are manifold, but you can assume that most of them will include these ingredients. One of my favourite restaurants for this dish is Anda Yentafo, located in the heart of Phuket Town just near the Royal Phuket City Hotel. It is located in a small soi off Tilok-U-Thit 2 Rd, where it meets Phang Nga Rd, and is the main branch of the family-run enterprise which opens 24 hours a day. Their two other branches are located in Phra Baramee Rd, Patong and in Sakdidet Rd which leads to Cape Panwa. @thephuketnews

Keep an eye out for this sign near where Tilok-U-Thit 2 Rd meets Phang Nga Rd, you can’t miss it. Running restaurants has been in the family for a long time for owner Arcaede Thongyon, whose parents ran a noodle shop in their home province of Udon Thani. “My family ran a noodle shop in Udon Thani before I was born, so I grew up in one,” said Mr Arcaede. “I opened this yentafo shop because I love to do it and our shop is the first in Phuket that specialises in seafood yentafo. “Now we have three yentafo noodle shops, and in the future we want to have more one more in Kathu. We are now is in the process of finding the land to open it, but is not easy.” Mr Arcaede is understandably proud of his signature seafood yentafo (pictured in all its glory on the Life cover on p16) as can be seen from the giant plastic bowl of noodles sign on top of the shop. “The secret is in the sweet, tangy, spicy red sauce that gives this dish its iconic colour and flavour, other than

that it’s just a simple noodle soup! We use shrimp, mussels, fish balls, egg and squid, however, you can pick and choose what toppings you want, and people often like fried tofu and pork as well,” he said. While I heartily recommend that you try the restaurant’s signature dish, there are no shortage of options available to suit all tastes on the extensive menu – which is presented to you on a large coloured piece of cardboard with big pictures, and labelled in both English and Thai, making ordering easy. There are beef-based noodle soups as well as snacks such as deep-fried shrimp or chicken wings. I often get the deceptively simple but delicious khao man gai (or chicken on rice), but there are also chicken, beef and salmon steaks served with French fries and salad.

ast Sat urday ( Nov 19), the Phuket Cricket Group (PCG) hosted their last touring side for 2016, the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC). This was the 6th time SCC have toured Phuket and the “Sensible” Cup was at stake. Last year the SCC won the Cup by just four runs in a close fought match that went down to the wire, and this year the PCG lads were keen to reclaim the cup, which was somehow missing in action from the Alan Cooke Ground (ACG) trophy shelf. PCG won the toss and sent SCC out to bat first in the 30 over match. Their openers R Shah and V Jeyaratnam got off to a slow but steady start and after six overs were 20 for the loss of no wickets. However, Jeyaratnam was cleaned bowled for 10 the very next over by A Runhaar. Shah soon followed being caught

The next two SCC batsman, A Beer and S Chandran got the team back on track with a 22 run partnership before Beer was caught at mid-wicket for 14 off the bowling of S Wetherell putting SCC at 46/3 in the 14th over. After a short drinks break SCC resumed their innings but D Wright did not last too long at the crease being stumped off of the bowling of Wetherell

for just three runs. However, Chandran was joined at the crease by H Darwell and between them they put together a much needed partnership of 53 runs to take the SCC score to 105/4 after 26 overs. Darwell, who had made a respectable 23 runs from 36 balls, soon after retired. Next in was H Thompson, but he didn’t trouble the scorers and SCC found themselves on 109/5 in the 27th over. With

less than three overs to go Chandran and B Griggs upped the ante and took the side to 130 from their 30 overs. After lunch, PCG took to the middle to chase down 131 for a win. On paper the PCG side looked very strong, however, they soon found themselves in deep trouble when both openers went for ducks and Hamilton was caught for just one run. So with just three overs into their

innings, PCG found themselves on just one run for the loss of three wickets. However, P Morton and H Jordaan put on a 62 run partnership from just 46 balls. Morton eventually fell in the 10th over while on 26 from 24 balls and the PCG score on 63. Jordaan continued to find the boundary with relative ease which included six 6s and one 4. Local stalwarts Wetherell (6) and A Khan (12) also chipped

in with the bat, and when Khan fell the PCG score was 109 for six wickets in the 15th over. With plenty of batting and overs remaining, the game appeared to be well and truly in the PCG bag, but a couple of ducks to H McDonald and A Van Blerk soon changed the landscape and swung things slightly back in SCC’s favour with PCG needing 10 runs with three wickets in hand. Next to the crease for PCG was Runhaar, and it was he who hit the winning runs with a boundary through the covers to take the PCG over line to 133 runs. So in the end a comfortable win for the PCG with plenty of overs to spare. The PCG are always looking for new players and officials to assist with the running of cricket on the island. eammates Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton will duel for the 2016 world championship at the final race of the year this Sunday (Nov 27) at a tense Abu Dhabi Grand Prix finale. Just 12 points separate the title protagonists after 20 rounds of this record-length season, and though Rosberg holds the mathematical advantage, momentum is with defending titleholder Hamilton. The Briton has hit his stride at the close of the season, easily outracing his teammate in the United States, Mexico, and Brazil to slice his 33-point deficit down to just a dozen points. But the three-time champion timed his run to the finish poorly – Rosberg’s victory at the fifth-last race in Japan

The raw numbers in Abu Dhabi therefore paint a simple story: a podium finish, regardless of whether his teammate wins the race, will be enough to secure Rosberg his maiden

F1 championship. Though Rosberg has been reluctant to admit it, his driving has been abundantly cautious since Suzuka, the calculating German knowing too well that any racing overreach could put him onto the back foot in the face of his teammate’s scintillating form. Seizing on his teammate’s

relaxed demeanour, Hamilton, aggrieved for suffering the lion’s share of technical troubles this season – including a costly engine failure in Malaysia, which he briefly and incredibly suggested may have been the work of internal sabotage – has been quick to prosecute the argument that the quicker driver may not

win the championship. “I’m happy that with the same car I beat Nico [in Brazil],” Hamilton said after his win in Sao Paulo. “Nico’s driving at his best right now, and today he had nothing on me. “I am in an awkward position going into the last race. It doesn’t really make a big difference if I go and drive like I am right now, because I have already lost so much through the year. “The reliability has been really good, so the results are really showing that. “I can’t give up, because you never know what can happen. It’s unlikely, but you never know.” Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff isn’t considering Hamilton’s concerns about the validity of the title as chief amongst his worries, however, and is instead preoccupied with preventing a technical fault influencing the intra-team title showdown. “They are going to fight it out on track,” said Wolff. “We just have to give them two cars so they can do that.

ritish International School, Phuket (BISP) is quickly becoming a sports training centre to be reckoned with, with some members of their football, swimming, tennis and golf academies already performing at the highest levels in their sports for their respective countries. However, the sporting program at the well-known school is now taking a further step forward with the formation of the BISP Triathlon Academy led by Head Coach Sergio Borges, a man with more than 25 years experience in a sport that is a true test of an athlete’s endurance. As a competitive triathlete, Sergio has competed around the world in all race distances, including 25 Ironman, and also qualified for the Ironman World Championships on a remarkable eight occasions. Over the last two decades, he has also become a well-respected coach on the international circuit. Part of the school’s expanding High Performance College, the BISP Triathlon Academy was launched in mid-2016 and has three main goals for its students: developing athletes to be able to get college scholarships, become Olympians, and pursue a professional career within the sport. There was no triathlon academy prior to Sergio’s arrival, as he was specifically invited by the school’s

The new coach already has athletes from all over the world in his care. “This is very exciting for me,” Sergio told The Phuket News in a recent interview. “The BISP Triathlon Academy is a new program, which is still small. We currently have six athletes: two on the Development Team and four on the High Performance Team,” he said. However, the athletes he does have are already performing well. “Results so far this season are speaking for themselves, with two wins and a 6th place in a Junior ITU race in Hong Kong in October,” Sergio said. But it is Sergio’s aim to grow the

academy by bringing in youngsters from as far afield as the United States and develop them to becoming sporting greats. “In the near future my goal is to have at least 20 athletes in the academy and to develop the High Performance Team. I have already seen a lot of potential from athletes from Asia, the Middle East and the US who are looking for a great academic and sport program like we offer here,” he said. When asked what he brings to the academy, Sergio said, “Over the years I have worked with athletes of all ages. My coaching experience includes 15 years with university teams, but also with the USA National Junior Team and their U23s, so I bring a lot of experience – I also bring passion.” Asked how he would personally

see that his role in the academy had been a success, Sergio replied, “To always give my very best through education and teaching athletes how to really be high level performers. Everything I do I do with passion, and I want to pass this on to the athletes I coach.” With the BISP Triathlon Academy program still so young, Sergio admits it will take time for him to get his athletes where he wants them to be, and achieving consistently at a top level. “I think we are still far from being at a high performance level, not only at the school but in Asia in general. We need at least three to five years of hard and consistent training to start getting good international results. “Triathlon is, like many other sports, about consistent training

and patience. It takes a long time to develop Olympic-level athletes,” he said. But with talented athletes from BISP’s other sporting academies already winning international competitions, Sergio acknowledges that he is tasked with making the BISP Triathlon Academy a similar success story, and is already preparing his charges for intense international competition. “Right now we are building up to a race in Abu Dhabi in March 2017 (the ITU World Cup), where I will have athletes racing in the 12, 14 and 18-year-old divisions. We will also do local races [in Phuket] and a race in Singapore in January to keep athletes motivated and sharp,” he said. On a final note, Sergio said that he is in this role for the long-haul, and he is aiming high when it comes to how he sees the academy succeeding in the future. “I’m looking for long-term work here. I’m here to stay and will make the BISP Triathlon Academy program we have at the British International School, Phuket the best that any international school has.
