SECURI TY PERSONNEL at Phuket I nternational Airport arrested a Danish man with 1.6 kilogrammes of heroin wrapped around his waist as he attempted to board a direct ight to openhagan on earl Wednesday morning (Dec 23). Danish national Peter Efferso, 46, was taken into custody after security staff found four bundles of heroin wrapped around his waist during a routine pre-flight security check at 6: 30am. He was later handed over to ustoms officers then to the Tha Chatchai Police. Mr Efferso was presented to the press at the airport this morning. “Mr Efferso admitted that he wrapped the heroin around

We are still waiting for the Land Transport Department to confirm that the tu -tu is legal and roadworthy.” To this, J aturong Kaewkasi, the policy specialist at the hu et and ransport ffice (PLTO), said that the death of Ms Corrigan is “no cause for reviewing the regulations” concerning side-entry and

The design may have nothing to do with the tourist falling,” Mr J aturong added. Mr J aturong also noted that this was the first time an accident like this has happened”. However, Australian tourist Z achary Noble was airlifted back to Australia for treatment of serious head injuries sustained from when he fell from the back of a tuk-tuk on Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Rd in Patong in J uly 2012. eligious activities and memorial exhibitions are being prepared across the island as Phuket gets ready to mark the 11th anniversary of the 2004 Asian Tsunami on Saturday, December 26. As in years past, the centre of memorial activities will be at Loma Park in Patong, which was devastated by the tsunami in 2004. “I n collaboration with Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and others departments, this year’s tsunami-memorial event will be held on Saturday, December 26, at Loma Park in Patong to pay homage to the victims of the 2004 tsunami,” said Phuket Governor Chamroen Tipayapongtada. “At the event, we will have exhibitions with educational information about natural disasters, especially tsunamis and earthquakes, on display as well as live entertainment and music.

Many religious ceremonies will be held throughout the area after 6pm also,” he added. pecificall a uddhist ceremony will be held at Provincial Hall, a Christian ceremony will be held at Patong Beach and a Buddhist ceremony organised by the Phuket J apanese Association will be held at Kamala Beach, Gov Chamroen explained. “Also, a Muslim ceremony will be held at Bang Tao Beach

Yet Patong, the place in Phuket worst hit by the waves in 2004, will again be home to the traditional “Light Up Phuket” candle-lighting ceremony on Patong Beach, during which thousands of people turn out to dig holes in the sand and place lit candles within to remember victims of the tsunami. Gov Chamroen noted that December 26 was a day not only to remember those lost
to the waves, but also a time to acknowledge that natural disasters are a part of life and for people to learn how to respond to such emergencies. “We should take this day each year as an opportunity to re-evaluate our disaster preparedness and learn to adopt a more developed mindset toward safety,” Gov Chamroen urged. The 2004 Asian Tsunami claimed an estimated 230,000 to 280,000 lives. I n Thailand, official government estimates mar confirmed dead

he government campaign to ban the sale of alcohol anywhere near schools and other “educational institutions” is unnecessary, according to a huge majority of people who voted in the latest online poll by T h e Ph u k e t N e w s . Following the cocktail of heady confusion brewed by the double whammy of a loosely worded government regulation coupled with a just-as-vague direct order by the National council for Peace and Order (NCPO), businessfolk who sold alcohol near “education institutions” have been left stumped over whether or not they can sell alcohol. Central to the issue is whether the 300-metre “no alcohol zone” ordered by Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha is appropriate in all areas as well as the confusion over what exactly was the definition of an education institution”.

It’s all about differences 1
E
ditorials, they always seem to be related to a major news story or ‘ headline of the week’, so as the year 2015 comes to a close let’s hit a slightly lighter note and talk about culture, or in fact cultural differences. Culture can cover such a varied amount of topics, be it history, dress, language or religion, but let’s touch on a much more fun and less serious cultural topic: social habits. Although it is still a serious issue, let’s take it just the way it’s meant to be taken, light-heartedly. Foreigners living in a country such as Thailand should be aware of our cultural differences, some may offend, and some we may often see as ridiculous. But we also have our own social habits which some may also be offended by or see as ridiculous. But,
there are some that we should be able to be light-hearted about and not be offended by, as all they are, are cultural differences. As to not offend any Thai readers who may be reading this, let’s start with Western social habits. We from the Wester n world see picking the nose and picking at spots as a private thing. We usually do these things within the confines of a bathroom. However, when it comes to digging out a chunk of meat stuck between our teeth, we dig away for all to see, even if we were sitting in a topnotch restaurant. This is very different for Thais, in fact, it’s completely the opposite. We all must have seen how Thai people cover their mouths when they need to
remove that nuisance piece of food from their teeth. But we all must have witnessed how the digging out of that crusty one from the nose or the squeezing of that face ruining dimple can be done so openly in public. I n fact, is that not what mirrors on motorbikes were invented for? Now some might take offence to seeing a young man sitting on his souped-up noise-making machine having a good old dig at his nose. But why should they, it’s a Thai social habit. Some may take offence to seeing a foreigner picking away at his teeth after a fantastic meal. Why should they, it’s a Western social habit. Culture, wherever you may be in the world, is all about differences. Enjoy them.

Surely the sensible answer is to prohibit this practice but to allow the businesses to rent umbrellas and mats to tourists who are then free to pitch them on whatever part of the beach they chose. The mats and umbrellas are then returned to the businesses at the end of the day and the tourist gets back their security deposit paid when they rented the equipment. he government has dismissed a recent report by the Associated Press that Thai authorities have openly ignored slavelike labour conditions in the shrimp industry. During a press briefing at Government House onMonday (Dec 21), a team of government spokesmen and anti-illegal fishing and human-traffic ing specialists disputed the report, insisting serious efforts have been under way to end labour abuses and requested that the media write fair reports. Government spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd denied the AP report on Dec 13, which alleged that authorities ignored forced labour at shrimp-peeling sheds in Samut Sakhon and that Thailand had become one of the world’s leading shrimp-exporters because of low costs resulting from labour abuse. “The report was wrong

Responding to media claims that those behind human traffic ing rings remain at large, Maj Gen Sansern said that since the National

report happened on Nov 9 at a time when authorities were working to tackle labour abuse in Samut Sakhon. But the AP report inaccurately claimed officials overlooked the slave-like conditions and the illegal detention of workers, he added. By using a picture of workers in a cell, the report communicated the idea workers were detained, but what was actually happening in the photo is officials were in the process of sorting out which workers were illegal and which had papers. An operation to combat labour abuse started on Nov 9, and 101 of 125 targeted factories were inspected, and the number of factories with labour abuse was reduced, Vice Adm J umpol said at Government House. he Russian community in Phuket are very familiar with the “Gastronom – More Food” shop in Chalong as a place where everyone can take a break from eating local food and instead enjoy traditional Russian and Ukrainian dishes. And now a brand new branch has recently opened up in Kathu for everyone to enjoy delicacies such as borscht, dumplings, salads and pasties, perfect for the Christmas and New Year holiday season. So if you’re planning to celebrate this time of year with all of these traditional delights (and let’s face it who could really imagine a Russian feast without them), then this is the perfect place to ensure you’ve got it all covered. From Russian salads to diced potatoes to vegetables to eggs, crab salad, herring in shuba-coat, or perhaps some ham dressed with mayonnaise – you can find all of these in Gastronom. The restaurant is a small cosy space with a couple of tables so you can either have something to eat here, or get it to take away. All of the salads are authentic and taste homemade,
which is astonishing considering the fact that all of the dishes are cooked by three local ladies. Interestingly enough, instead of herring, there is bonito in the ‘shuba-coat’ but you can hardly distinguish it. It’s tender and melts in your mouth almost as though it was whipped up by a Russian grandmother. Aside from the salads there is also fresh-made soup every day – borsch with sour cream or beef and chickpea. You can also find cutlets, chicken fillet and other kinds of meat. Everything is cooked, so you just need to warm it up. And don’t forget about desserts, it’s
a heaven for anyone with a sweet tooth. If you are Russian, it wouldn’t be surprising if you went for the pastry that’s called ‘potato’, but it has nothing in common with this vegetable, other than the shape. It’s sweet and has a soft sponge cake base, reminding Russians of their childhood when it seemed to be the most popular choice of spread that any pastry shop would offer. You can also find other Russian favourites such as the cake that’s named after Czech Republic’s capital, ‘Prague’ cake. If you’re a fan of chocolate desserts you should really try one of these des-
serts, you won’t regret it and will enjoy it no matter where your homeland is. All of the dishes are more than affordable. For instance, one slice of cake will cost you no more than B75. You will also find some authentic Russian pickles, squash spread and bottled sunflower oil there. The owners of the Gastronom also run a Russian restaurant called Wonderfood in Paklok, be sure to check out the baked porkling or duck on Fridays and Saturdays. A Christmas Day treat
F
or any British person, they will know what Christmas pudding means to them. They will either love it or hate, but no matter what, they will know it serves as part of the traditional Christmas dinner. It comprises of many dried fruits held together by egg and suet, sometimes moistened by treacle molasses and flavoured with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and other spices. It can be eaten with brandy butter, rum, butter, cream, lemon cream, ice cream, custard, or sweetened béchamel, and is some-
times sprinkled with caster sugar. As sad I was not being able to venture back to the UK for a traditional family Christmas dinner this year, I was lucky enough to be able to enjoy some tasty Christmas pudding-style cupcakes at a luncheon put on by the Phuket International Women’s Club at the Holiday Inn last Thursday (December 17). The delicious cakes made me feel all warm inside and were certainly the next best thing after mama’s homemade ones! Dalia Hilmi

Exploring one of Malaysia’s hidden gems - Part 1
Dasha Suleyman ed itor@classactmed ia.co.th
O
ne of the most appealing things about living in Phuket is the opportunity to travel around Asia. As a resident of Phuket I made my first trip to Malaysia, but not for a visarun, as you might think. Before moving from Moscow to Thailand, I learned about some beautiful, mysterious and secluded place somewhere in between the mountains in the state of Negeri Sembilan. Looking through photos on the website of the jungle resort, The Dusun, it was easy to guess that the place is something different from the typical hospitality standards we’re accustomed to. Instead of luxury, I was surrounded by picturesque views on a mountain range; instead of brunches and all-night parties, I was surrounded by maturing durian and mangosteen trees, creative neighbours and wild animals.
ROOTS
The Dusun began as a retreat from the city for just one family more than 20 years ago. Helen and her family found a special place in the Mantin hills of Negeri Sembilan. And this is where The Dusun was built. All the rubber trees were removed and durian seeds were planted by Helen, David and their five children. Year by year the Dusun expanded and more wooden houses were built. In 2009, Helen and her family decided to turn it into a nature resort. Each house within this resort is unique and set apart from the others so guests can enjoy privacy and a sense of space, what this family enjoys most. It’s easy to fall in love with this place. The Dusun is 800 feet above sea level in the foothills of the Titiwangsa – the main Malaysian mountain range. So wherever you look there’s an exciting and picture-worthy view. Next to it there is the Berembun
gates. The only thing that we could see was a hotel, with a sign on the gates with the The Dusun inscription. Whatever it was, I was ready for it. One of the main rules of the hotel, according to the website, is the utter respect of guests’ privacy. Forest Reserve, comprising 4,000 acres of protected virgin forest rising to an elevation of 3,900 feet. This forest isn’t very well-known outside the Orang Asli community, which itself is rich in birds and plants of all kinds. Here you can meet wild boars and deers, monkeys and even creatures you’d probably prefer to avoid, such as giant millipedes, leeches and snakes. The Batang Penar river flows through this reserve and is the main source of water for the Seremban community, the capital of the state. The trip from Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Dusun took around an hour by car. On the way my driver, Mohammed, told me that some tourists get scared as they approach the jungle and usually ask for the car to turn back! “But what did they expect, it’s The Dusun!” my companion laughed. Well after that amusing story, I soon relaxed and fell asleep on my backpack. I woke up as the car was shaking attempting to climb up the hill. I looked out the window and all I could see was this endless steep hill and it made us feel a little on edge. I looked ahead and noticed high iron
GREENERY
My first impression was the deafening silence. All you could hear was the sound of the birds and some very calm staff members, who mostly are inhabitants of the two nearest villages. They are from the real Orang Asli community and understand this area and local nature better than anyone. I met Hanim, Helen’s daughter as well as her husband Cee. One of my goals was to try and get an interview with Cee as from my understanding, he is a talented musician and a member of the Malaysian band, Bass Sekolah. He is also the organiser of Asian tours for plenty of underground electronic musicians and a resident of Red Bull Music Academy (you can read more about my interview with Cee in an upcoming issue). “We’re going to have lunch, join us,” Hanim said as he led me to a spacious terrace with just a few tables. As all other features within the resort, the terrace sits on a mountain of poles and under the shade of a number of beautiful, mature trees. “We planted these trees ourselves,” Hanim said while we were having lunch. I came to The Dusun on Halloween eve (October 30), so after a short
interview and a walk to Cee’s home studio, my hosts transitioned into their entertaining Pirate and Red Ridinghood costumes and left to party the night away, while I stayed with Asma, a nice young member of The Dusun staff. Asma took me on a wonderful tour of the resort allowing me to see the place from different angles – as a hotel, as a retreat and also as a community. For the first time since I moved to Asia I saw how durian and mangosteen grew – sprawling fruitfull trees down the hill. “This year the mangosteen didn’t bring any fruit. But when it does, we give the fruits to our guests,” Asma said pointing at the trees. I was quite impressed that the resort grows its own fruiting trees. We had took a walk to see how all the six houses were equipped for guests (there are also houses where the owners live). Each of them looks unique and has its own name. But the buildings also have a few common features, the unforgettable view of the retreat and lovely green mountain range. As we tried not to violate the main rule of The Dusun – privacy – we approached each house with Asma whispering the stories, all the while looking up at shadows roaming around the house and the sounds of happiness and laughter. But luckily one of the units was empty – Perling house. This house is one of the best located buildings here and has a well-equipped, open-air kitchen on the terrace. It would have been nice to sit outside and eat our morning breakfast, while taking in the charming view; definitely something to do if we ever come back! The unit is divided into two private sections. “It suits two pairs of friends or couples perfectly. Most of our guests come here with their families or in couples”, Asma told me. Be sure to tune into part two of my story in next week’s edition of The Phuket News.

A ROCKIN’ NEW YEAR’S EVE Hard Rock Café to host a night of live music, food and thrilling fireshows Dalia Hilmi ed itor1 @classactmed ia.co.th
N
ew Year’s Eve is just around the corner and Phuket is one of the most exciting places to bring in the new year. With so many choices, it can be difficult to decide where to go. But we’ve just made this decision simple for you. There’s no better place to enjoy a rocking party in Phuket than the worldfamous Hard Rock Café in Patong. The popular venue will be putting on an electrifying night with a glorious dinner set and live entertainment throughout the whole evening. The night will kick off from 8:30pm and carry on till late. Guests can look forward to performances by three different bands, explosive fire shows as well as some Latin music shortly after midnight. The three bands include Splitfire, Kayle Syncro, and Greisy Martin, each sure to give guests an unforgettable experience. Guests will have a tantalising choice from a premium four-course set dinner package including with/without selected beverage options. Dishes range from a delicious mushroom vegetarian starter or a crab meat and avocado salad; either the rib-eye steak with all the trimmings, Australian lamb chops served with veggies and mashed potatoes, or the sizzling seabass steak for mains; as well as a roast pump-
kin soup course. Dessert options include hot fudge brownie topped with walnuts and chocolate sauce or fresh apple cobbler served warm with vanilla ice cream and almonds. Hard Rock is famed for putting on rocking events so if you’re passionate about live music and looking for a fun way to spend New Year’s Eve, then there really is no better place than Patong’s Hard Rock Café.
Tarantino gets star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
O
scar-winning filmmaker Quentin Tarantino got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday (Dec 21), just days before the release of his latest movie The Hateful Eight. Tarantino recalled to a crowd that had gathered for the event outside the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard how his parents used to take him to see films at the famed theatre, including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or his first James Bond movie, Diamonds are Forever. “The line went all the way down the block. And we stayed in that line, and at one point of that line, I stood right there,” he said, pointing to his star. The filmmaker, who dropped out of high school insisting he could learn more on his own, won Oscars for the black comedy western Django Unchained in 2013 and the black comedy crime film Pulp Fiction in 1995. But his latest movie The Hateful Eight has received lukewarm reviews and was recently snubbed by the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, considered a bellwether for the Oscars. Patong edge out ICC CRICKET

he toss was won by Patong captain Seemant Raju who elected to bat in this eagerl anticipated first clash of the season between the reigning 20-over champions Patong and I sland Cricket Club. The Patong openers got off to a steady start with I mtiyaz Mushtaq in particular, looking in uent touch and finding the boundary regularly. Mushtaq and Raju had accumulated a partnership of 69 in the 11th over before I CC made a double breakthrough. First, Raju (14) was caught by Takur off the bowling of Shahnawaz with I mtiyaz (48) following almost immediately, trying one big shot too many and being bowled by Chand. This brought two new batsmen to the crease in Paddy Morton (10) and Stuart Hamilton (17). Both played positively and pushed the ball around until they were both caught on the boundary from successive balls from Shahnawaz with the score on 98, Morton at deep square leg

For the third time this brought two new batsmen to the crease, this time Simon Wetherell (1) and Anthony Van Blerk (9). Wetherell soon became Shahnawazs fourth victim, caught by Virdicar. Pir Sami then strode to the crease and dispatched his first three alls to the boundary in an entertaining innings, pushing the score on to 124 in partnership with Van Blerk before the former was run out. Van Blerk immediately followed, well caught at long off by Ravi Naik. At the end of the 20 overs Patong had accumulated 131/ 7 and knew that they would need to owl and field well to e in
with a chance of winning. The I CC innings started steadily and openers Shah (3) and Mydeen (24) had put on 20 before I mtiyaz had Shah well caught at point by Morton. Next up was Chand (5) who didn’t last long being caught at point by Wetherell from the bowling of Raju. Mydeen was next to go having hit some belligerent boundaries was pinned LBW from the leg spin of Morton. New man Virdicar (2) soon followed, top edging a J ustin Swart delivery to Hamilton at short third man to leave I CC precariously placed at 56/ 4 from 10 overs. Shahnawaz (25) then joined Naiq (31) who had been steadily accumulat-
ing at the other end to put on for the fifth wic et efore Sami held a steepling catch from Naiq off the bowling of Morton. Vaiganker (6) then joined Shahnawaz before he was run out by Raju. Kumar was the new batsman and a few big hits by Shahnawaz meant that 12 runs were required from the last over being bowled by Raju. Shahnawaz calmly dispatched the first all for four but the batmen struggled for the next four balls leaving 3 required to win from the last ball. Shahnawaz could only squirt the ball to short third man, leaving Kumar to be comfortably run out and Patong winning by 1 run. I t was a very
closely fought game with both teams playing in good spirit, which bodes well for the rest of the season. Blatter, Platini banned FOOTBALL
A
n ethics tribunal of scandal-plagued FI FA on Monday (Dec 21) banned Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini for eight years saying they had abused their positions over a 2 million Swiss francs payment made to Platini. The sentence against the two most powerful men in football stunningly highlighted the troubles faced by the world’s most popular sport where billions of dollars have been invested in recent years. Blatter, 79, and Platini, 60, were “immediately” banned from all football activity. Blatter’s career is now almost certainly over while Platini’s hopes of taking over FI FA are all ut finished Blatter, FI FA’s president since 1 was fined Swiss francs (B1.8 million). Platini, the head of UEFA, Europe’s governing body and a FI FA vice president, was fined 80,000 Swiss francs (B2.9 million). A statement by the court said both showed “abusive
execution” of their powers. FI FA had looked into a two million Swiss francs payment authorised by Blatter to Platini in 2011. They said it was for work as a consultant carried out between 1999 and 2002. While the FI FA court dropped corruption charges against both men, it found both of them guilty of a conict of interest I t said there was “no legal basis” for the payment in an oral agreement between the two officials in ugust 1 “Neither in his written statement nor in his personal hearing was Mr Blatter able to demonstrate another legal basis for this payment. His assertion of an oral agreement was determined as not convincing and was rejected by the chamber.” The court said, “Mr Blatter’s actions did not show commitment to an ethical attitude, failing to respect all applicable laws and regulations as well as FI FA’s regulatory framework to the extent applicable to him and demonstrating an abusive execution of his position as President of FI FA”. Platini was also found to
Sepp Blatter (left) and Michel Platini are banned for eight years after a FIFA court found them guilty of abusing their positions over a $2 million payment. Photo: AFP e in a con ict of interest The judgement was even more damning of the French football legend than for Blatter. “Mr Platini failed to act with complete credibility and integrity, showing unawareness of the importance of his duties and concomitant obligations and responsibilities. “His actions did not show commitment to an ethical at-
titude, failing to respect all applicable laws and regulations as well as FI FA’s regulatory framework.”
Abusive execution
The court said Platini was also guilty of “demonstrating an abusive execution of his position as vice-president of FI FA.” Blatter and Platini were provisionally suspended in October after Swiss prosecutors started a criminal investigation into the 2011 cash transfer. Blatter is under criminal investigation and Platini is being treated as between a suspect and a witness. Both strongly deny any
wrongdoing. Blatter spent eight hours before a FI FA court last Thursday (Dec17) while Platini boycotted his hearing saying he had been “condemned” in advance. At the time of the 2011 payment, Blatter was campaigning for a fourth term as FI FA president. Platini later supported his former mentor but has since turned against him. Blatter and Platini can challenge any ban at a FI FA appeal tribunal, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and even in a Swiss civil court. latter would e fighting for his reputation. For Platini, the ban rules him out of the FI FA election to be held on
February 26. The deadline for candidates to be registered and pass an integrity check is J anuary 26. With FI FA’s reputation in tatters after the arrest of several top officials latter announced four days after winning re-election to a fifth term in May that he would stand down and call a new election. even officials were arrested in a luxury Z urich hotel two days before the election congress. Now US authorities have charged foot all officials and sports business executives over more than $200 million (B72.3 billion) in bribes for football television and marketing deals. Swiss prosecutors are in parallel investigating FI FA’s management and the award of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar. Facing pressure from governments and the I nternational Olympic Committee for major reforms, there are currently five candidates to ta e over FI FA: Asian football head Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa of Bahrain, South African politician and tycoon Tokyo Sexwale, former FI FA vice president Prince Ali bin al Hussein of J ordan, UEFA general-secretary Gianni I nfantino and J erome Champagne, a former FI FA assistant general secretary from France. English Premier League 2015 - 2016
One of the biggest deals this year was the transfer of Raheem Sterling (right) from Liverpool to Manchester City, pictured here against Arsenal. Photo: AFP (£2.7m or B144.3mn), QPR and Reading (both £2.3m or B123mn). Further down the leagues, third tier Bury and fourth tier Accrington Stanley and Hartlepool did not pay a single penny (53 satang) to agents.
Arsenal downs Man City
Vying for top of the English elite, Theo Walcott scored a brilliant opening goal as Arsenal established themselves as the number one challengers to Premier League leaders Leicester City by overcoming Manchester City 2-1 on Monday. Walcott curled home a beauty in the 33rd minute before Mesut Ozil teed up Olivier Giroud to score his 12th goal in 14 games in first-half stoppage time, with Yaya Toure’s classy reply for City coming too late. Victory took Arsene Wenger’s side to within two points of Leicester, leaving City four points further back in third place after a third defeat in five league games and fifth of the campaign in total. “There is exceptional life
in this team,” said Wenger, whose side visit Southampton on Boxing Day. “Every win strengthens your belief and even more in a big game like that. We have something really special there.” Though Alexis Sanchez missed out again for Arsenal due to a hamstring injury, there was much to celebrate for the home side, who have now gone five games without defeat against City, including the impressive Ozil taking his tally of assists for the season to 15. But it was a bleak evening for City manager Manuel Pellegrini, who once again saw centre-backs Eliaquim Mangala and Nicolas Otamendi struggle in the absence of injured captain Vincent Kompany. Manchester City shouldn’t have too much trouble when they host lowly Sunderland, while Leicester City are away to Liverpool at the same time (both matches 10pm Thailand time), while Arsenal later are away to Southampton (2.45am). Hamilton’s race to the top of F1 in 2015 BOX OF NEUTRALS Michael Lamonato michael@boxofneutrals.com
P
leasant autumnal sunshine streamed through the windows of Melbourne’s Republica, where the Mercedes team made convivial conversation with journalists after months of off-season separation. A new Formula One season was dawning. The atmosphere – jovial, as first days back at school often are – did not extend to all, however. Lewis Hamilton, at long last a reigning world champion again, cut a withdrawn figure. He monosyllabically dispatched with questions from the brunching press, refusing to follow the expansive answers of teammate Nico Rosberg or team boss Toto Wolff seated to his right. At the fore of moody Hamilton’s mind was that the 2015 season would be his opportunity to close a career-long narrative of emulating his Formula One hero Ayrton Senna. The result of the Australian Grand Prix three days later – pole position, fastest lap, race victory –
Lewis Hamilton celebrating victory at the 2015 Canadian Grand Prix. Photo: Richard Paquet was the template of the balance of the season in which he steamrolled a punch-drunk Nico Rosberg on the way to accomplishing his career goal. Do not underestimate the significance of this task to Hamilton – the late Brazilian, regarded as amongst the very best drivers in the sport’s history has been the model on which Hamilton’s entire career has been based, from his aggressive driving style favouring all-out speed over long-term race management to his heart-on-his-sleeve way of going about his business off track. Like Senna, Hamilton prides himself on being his own man; untamed, a man free from convention.
The significance of his mission became obvious in Monaco, where Hamilton ended the race an inconsolable third after a strategic blunder robbed him of what should have been his first victory around the streets of the principality his idol dominated like no other driver before or since. At the end of the grand prix Hamilton stopped his car at the same place Senna infamously crashed in 1988 while holding an unassailable lead. The moody pre-Australia Hamilton re-emerged, the weight of the season made public. The darkness was temporary, and Hamilton energised his negativity,
as he had learnt to do the previous season at the lowest points of his title duel with Nico Rosberg, to power him to victory in Canada two weeks later. He was bested only once more by Rosberg before the United States Grand Prix in October, where he delivered his Senna-equalling third title, just one race after surpassing Senna’s career 41 victories. “It was always to get the three that Ayrton had,” Hamilton said after jumping out of the car. “Now I’m like, ‘I don’t know where it’s going next’. There is no-one else I look to that I want to equal or emulate now.”
Hamilton’s nine-year Formula One life has been characterised by trying to find the space to become the man that would be capable of shouldering this self-imposed burden. Leaving McLaren for the personal freedom of Mercedes was the first part. Seeing off his teammate to stamp his authority on the team in 2014 was the second. Only the statistics remained to validate his efforts. “I’m just going to start. I feel like I’ve got the baton now for myself and Ayrton, and I’m going to carry it as far as I can, as strong as I can and keep building and see where I take it.” As the sun sets on the Formula One season owned by the triple world champion, two men are left to brood on their futures – Nico Rosberg dwells on rebuilding his reputation while Sebastian Vettel plots his return to championship glory with a resurgent Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, is waiting contentedly for the dawn of the 2016 season, waiting to begin again. Be sure to tune in to Live 89.5 on Saturdays from 9am for the Box of Neutrals programmed for more F1 inside, outside and everything in between. thephuketnews
