MAJOR AWARD FOR SOI DOG Gill and John Dalley of the Soi Dog Foundation have received this year’s Jeanne Marchig Animal Welfare Award 2011, along with US$20,000 (B630,000). The award, from grantmaking charity the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust, recognises “outstanding services to animal welfare”. Announcing the 2011 win ners of the award that bears her name, the Founder and Chairman of the Trustees, Jeanne Mar chig explained, “The trustees were unanimous that the award should be made jointly to Gill and John Dalley of the Soi Dog Foundation in acknowledgment of their tireless work in protecting animals from abuse. Receiving the award, Gill Dalley said: “John and I feel extremely honoured to receive this award. The money from the award will be used in its entirety towards continuing Soi Dog’s mission.”

Man dies after mysterious bite D octors are puzzled by the death of a fruit vendor on Monday (January 23), from what his wife believes was a spider bite. Wanchai Wongsilakorn, 30, died at Thalang Hospital after being taken there on Sunday night by his wife, Piyanan Boonsri, also 30, after complaining of swelling and pain in his right arm. He told the doctor that he had been bitten by something while taking a bath. The doctor found no signs that he was in any danger, gave Mr Wanchai pain medication and sent him home. The following day, at 5 am, his family took him back to the hospital suffering from severe pain. He died suddenly at around noon. On Tuesday the Chief of the Phuket Public Health Office (PHO),
Dr Sak Tanchaikul, held a press conference to rebut accusations from a relative of Mr Wanchai that lack of attention from medical staff had contributed to his death. The relative, Kittisak Lomsungnern, 30, said that Mr Wanchai had been put into a bed but had then waited for more than six hours before a doctor came to examine him. Mr Wanchai’s wife said she believed he might have died from a bite inflicted by a spider she had seen in the couple’s bathroom. But Dr Sak said that doctors have not yet been able to pin down the exact cause of death. They suspect, however, that it may have been anaphylactic shock – a massive allergic reaction to some kind of sting or bite.
