WITH THAILAND GOING THROUGH ITS DRIEST PERIOD IN 15 YEARS, PHUKET NEEDS TO CONSERVE ITS WATER RESERVES AHEAD OF WHAT IS BEING DESCRIBED BY THE GOVERNOR AS A ‘MANAGEABLE WATER SHORTAGE’ Nattapat Tuarob reporter1@classactmedia.co.th
T
he governor has urged Phuket residents and local government organisations (LAOs) to reduce the amount of water they use, in order to avoid shortages during the current ongoing national drought. This year Thailand is suffering its worst drought in 15 years, prompting approval earlier this month by PM
Gen Prayuth Chan-Ocha of a budget of B7.8 billion for a variety of water projects around the country – though not in Phuket. Chairing a meeting to update on Phuket’s water situation on Monday (February 23), Governor Nisit Jansomwong said that there was not currently a shortage here, but urged residents to be careful not to waste any water and to try and cut down on unnecessary use of the important resource
in the coming dry months, until the Southwesterly Monsoon winds return. “We face a manageable shortage situation, but there is enough water in Phuket’s main reservoirs and other private water sources to get us through the next few months,” Gov Nisit told The Phuket News. He added that the Thai Meteorological Department is forecasting that rain will return to the island on schedule, by the end of April and early

May. According to the governor, Bang Wad reservoir, which supplies most of Phuket Town, Kathu and Patong, is currently at 58.2 per cent of its capacity of 6 million cubic metres (cu m), while Bang Neaw Dum reservoir in Thalang (Manik) is at 90.4 per cent of its 5 million cu m capacity. Also under constr uction in Chalong, but not yet operational, is another 5 million cu m capacity reservoir, located in Klong Katha.

Residents urged not to waste water Continued from front page According to data from the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (OrBorJor), aside from the main two dams, Phuket also has a number of registered public and private water sources which together supply an additional 1.16mn cu m, though it is not clear what the current reserves of these sources are. Asked about which communities are affected the most in Phuket, Gov Nisit confirmed that all those affected by last year’s drought will also be affected this year. He explained, “Last year 11 sub districts [out of 13] across Phuket encountered water shortages.” He gave the figures for people affected: 2,475 households totalling 8,669 people island-wide, with most heavily affected being in Thalang, where 1,448 homes totalling 5,015 people in Sakoo, Pa Khlok, Thepkrasattri, Maikhao, Cherngtalay, and Sri Sunthorn ran out of water. “This year so far we have had no shortages but if we don’t have proper management, there will be trouble. “So I want all government bodies to make preparations to handle any shortage that does occur. Are we ready to take care of our citizens?” He explained that most of last year’s shortages were in places at the fringes of the distribution system, where water pressure is lowest. The governor also said that LAOs must map out routes to get trucks in to places with shortages. Some
areas, such as Koh Kaew and Pracha-Uthit have roads too narrow for large water trucks. He laid out a seven-point policy for preventing water shortages: Every LAO must have a water management plan and save more water than last year but without affecting citizens. This is a matter of increasing efficiently, he said. LAOs must plan carefully how water resources will be used and water pressure must be set at appropriate levels – pressure that is too high will result in waste. “I need LAOs to estimate the number of people in their area. I believe the numbers must have grown at least 5 per cent from last year.” Water trucks must all be fixed, along with water pumps. LAOs must cooperate with each other to share trucks when necessary. LAOS cannot just depend on the Provincial Administrative Organisation (OrBorJor) to make up shortfalls. LAOs must set aside enough budget to pay for fuel for water truck deliveries. Prepare water resources. “If you have issued a permit for a landowner to fill in part of a water resource, the area must be carefully defined. You have to pay more attention [than in the past].” Every level of government must run campaigns to get people to reduce their use of water. “We don’t have a shortage now but we should be prepared in case we face one in the future.” Additional reporting by Tanyaluk Sakoot

P
olice are looking for a few final pieces of evidence before naming a local businessman who hired a team of five men to assassinate a neighbour who was demanding money from him for encroaching on his land. The B300,000 contract was combined with another at the same price, to assassinate the neighbour’s brother. The neighbour, Songvit “Koy” Winyupradit, 49, had complained that a building erected by the businessman on his adjoining land, next to the beach near Phuket Airport, was partly on Songvit’s own land. It jutted out, covering an area of 60 by 84 centimetres. Mr Songvit told the businessman he wanted B6.5 million for the encroached land, failing which, he wanted the encroaching part of the building demolished. The businessman looked at his options: B6.5 million to buy the half-square-metre of land or B600,000 to get rid of Songvit and, as a precaution, his brother. He hired a fixer who in turn hired four men to carry out the hits.
The fixer, Harim Rakmit, hides his face in his hands as the crew are shown to the press. The team began to make plans. They were not very clever about it. Mr Songvit’s wife spotted one of them hanging around outside the house. When she asked him what he wanted he said, “I’m just interested in land,” and went away. The first hit, against Songvit, went badly wrong. On the morning of January 19, Songwit took his daughter to school. As he rode home again along the Baan Ya-Baan Don Rd, a motorbike came the opposite direction. The passenger on the bike fired four shots, hitting Songvit in the hip, right leg and right buttock. Songvit managed to
stay on the bike long enough to get help. The gunmen fled. The day after the shooting, Adisak Preekan was sent to the hospital where he discovered that Songvit was still alive and under police guard. He reported this to Harim who was far from happy. Harim said he would pay the crew B150,000 with the remaining half of the contract on Mr Songvit payable only on when the target was dead. Mr Songvit’s brother, meanwhile, had also been given a police guard. The gang were told to lie low and wait for another chance. On Monday (February 23)
police had the fixer, Harim Rakmit, in custody, along with all four men he had hired – Adisak, Kietkai Yimkeaw – the shooter – Aimran Lannui and Worawut Piewdam. On Wednesday (February 25) Pol Maj Gen Patchara Boonyasit, Phuket’s police commander, presented Harim and his team to the press. All f ive members are charged with conspiracy to murder and with possession of unlicensed firearms. Gen Patchara Boonyasit said, “All the members of the team are from Krabi. We will arrest the man who ordered the hits very soon.”

A SHARP DROP IN THE number of Russian tourists to Phuket and around the nation due to the decline of the Russian Ruble is now starting to have an affect on big Russian tour companies including Pegas. Speaking to The Phuket News, Nikorn Yatinunt, a consultant for Pegas Touristik said that they have seen a
reduction of 70 per cent in customers so far. “The company do not have any plans to shut down, especially in Phuket where we have just bought a building for a permanent office. “We just have to cut down our administration expenses because of the drop in income from the decreasing number of Russian tourists.

His arrest followed one of his underlings, Sorasak “Jo” Sukjai, being nabbed by police with two ya bah pills on February 18. Following interrogations, Jo supplied police with details about Boo, and his wherabouts. Boo was at home with a
spouse at the time of the ensuing raid, in which officers found and seized another 1,135 pills of ya bah, just under 8 grammes of ya ice, an M16 rifle with 155 bullets, and a .32 caliber pistol with 55 bullets, among other items. Boo has been charged for possession of Schedule 1 drugs with intent to sell, as well as possession of guns without permits. On top of this, he was also charged for violations in the
hit-and-run case of 2013. At the conference, Boo, whose eyes showed no remorse, told reporters loudly: “I decided to be in the drug business because I don’t want to work for B200 per day. And, I have been in the business for a long time … I have guns for hurting bad people.” Pol Col Peerayut Karajedi, Deputy Commander of Phuket Police concluded, “He will be investigated for other drug connections.”

gardener was arrested early Monday morning (February 23) after he attacked two men with a machete who he alleged were trying to steal roosters from his garden. One of the men died and the other had to run for his life. At 1.20am, Kathu investigator, Lt Col Anukul Noogate, was called to investigate the death of a 21-year-old man who had been hacked with a machete in Soi Prabaramee 7 on Kalim hill. Police arrived at a vegetable and fruit orchard on a dirt track off of the Kalim-Kamala Rd about three kilometres from Kamala Beach and found the suspect Jarat Rattanarat, 64, standing with his wife waiting for police to arrive. Police were led to the body of 21-year-old, Weerawat Tiangnoy, a Patong resident, who had suffered large slashes to his neck. He was lying in a bush near a chicken coop and had

Kathu Superintendent, Lt Col Chaiyawat Uykam also came to the incident scene to collect crime scene information and later escorted Jarat, who admitted to the killing, to Kathu police station. Jarat told police that he has been hired by a Phuket investor to take care of the garden and orchard for at least 10 years, and that he raised roosters there.
“I have recently noticed that some of my roosters and hens were missing. “At first my wife and I thought it was a snake that took the roosters so for the last three days I have hidden and waited to catch the snake. “However, this morning I caught the two men trying to steal my rooster. I demanded they return the rooster but the victim responded by trying to
hack me with a skythe. I defended myself with a machete,” said Jarat. Weerawat was slashed twice on the neck and was killed instantly. His accomplice ran away into the woods in panic police were told. Jarat said he told his wife, Pensri Plagsakul, 60, he had killed the rooster thief. She told the land owner and then called the police.
A 10-MONTH-OLD BABY boy was safely reunited with his parents after being rescued from inside a locked BMW Saturday (February 21). He had been locked inside for 45 minutes at a hotel car park amid the Phuket heat. At 6pm, Kusoldharm rescue workers were called to the car park of the Merlin Hotel on Yaowarat Rd after police received a call from the boy’s father saying that the boy was trapped inside his BMW. When rescue workers arrived a group of residents were gathered around the BMW. The boy’s mother was crying and her husband was trying to keep the baby’s attention. Rescue workers first attempted to unlock the vehicle using a piece of metal but failed. They then shattered a window and rescued the boy.

‘Secured Leases’ void I
n a shock decision by the Phuket Civil Court, backed by the Region 8 Appellate Court, it has been ruled that the so-called “secured leases” offered by some real estate developers to allow foreigners to secure a cast-iron 90-year lease are not valid. The case is now to go to the Supreme Court. The Phuket News’ legal correspondent, Jerrold Kippen, has revealed that not only has the structure been ruled invalid but the courts’ decision may mean that the original underlying 30-year lease, even if registered with the Land Office, is now void – it never existed, leaving the foreign buyer with two handfuls of nothing. Mr Kippen explained, “As a general rule foreigners cannot own land and apartment units but it is possible for foreigners to lease them and that is the reason why these are commonly marketed to foreign buyers on a leasehold basis. “Under Thai law the maximum lease term is 30 years, which may be renewed upon expiration of that term. “The leases marketed to foreigners typically provide for an initial 30-year term plus two additional successive 30-year renewal terms. “However, the renewal of a lease in Thailand is by no means assured even if it is provided for in the original lease agreement.” He explained that in order to overcome this issue the “Secured” or “Collective” Lease was devised and marketed to foreigners. This is meant to ensure that the lease is renewed, twice, as originally agreed. The way this “security” is supposedly provided is by the buyer not only entering into a lease agreement with the Thai company that owns the developer’s land/apartment, but also entering into a share-sale-and-purchase agreement for shares that control the Thai company that owns the land/apartment. Now, however, two different Thai courts have concluded that the “Secured” Lease is “void” as a matter of law. A contract that is found to be void is considered never to have existed. If other courts confirm these two courts’ opinions, then not only will any renewal term of “Secured” Leases be invalid but also the current lease terms. “This would be the case regardless of whether such a @thephuketnews
Once again, a seemingly clever lawyerly way around the maxumum 30-year lease has foundered on legal rocks lease was already registered,” Mr Kippen said. “Why? Because a finding that a lease is void means that it never legally existed and, therefore, as far as the law is concerned, a void lease cannot be, nor ever could have been, registered. “Even if the legally void lease went through the Land Office formalities of registration, with registration fees paid, papers signed and stamped by the land officials, it simply does not change the legal non-existence of the void lease because, legally, nothing happened by such acts.” In the test case now headed for the Supreme Court, the buyers entered into the project’s “Secured” Lease structure. Leases, in this case for apartments, were registered several years ago. The lessees filed a civil case against the developer of the project in the Civil Court to protect their leasehold rights. Neither the buyers nor the developer argued that the leases were not valid. Quite the contrary: they both relied on provisions of the leases to support their respective arguments. However, the court decided on its own that the leases – when considered in light of the share-sale-and-purchase agreement for the shares that control the Thai company that owns the developer’s land/ apartments – were actually fictitious agreements made to conceal what the parties had actually agreed: to sell and buy the relevant real estate. “Section 155 of the Civil and Commercial Code of
Thailand (CCC) provides that if two parties enter a fictitious agreement in order to conceal their real agreement, the fictitious agreement is void. “It goes on to state that although the fictitious agreement is void, the hidden agreement that the parties actually made must then be evaluated under the provisions applicable to it,” Mr Kippen explained. “In this case, the courts ruled that the parties had entered into fictitious lease agreements through the “Secured” Lease structure and had done so in order to hide their actual agreement to sell and buy the properties.” The court, he said, decided this meant that the leases were void and that the provisions of Section 456 of the CCC applied to the “real” sale and purchase agreements. Section 456 provides, in pertinent part, that “a sale of immovable property is void unless it is made in writing and registered by the competent official.” The court then concluded that since these sales were not made in writing nor registered with the competent official, they too were void. This ruling, by a sole trial court judge, was then appealed to a three-judge appeal court panel. The Appellate Court confirmed the trial court’s decision on the very same factual and legal grounds as the trial court outlined above: The “Secured” Leases with their lease-plus-sharesale-purchase agreements were fictitious agreements meant to conceal actual saleand-purchase agreements for
the real estate; thus The leases and sharesale-purchase agreements were void; as were The actual concealed real estate sale-and-purchase agreements because they
were not made in writing nor registered with the competent official. “Taking these new decisions into account the ‘Secured’ Lease not only does little if anything to address the
very real insecurity that your long-term lease will not be renewed, but it also could have the disastrous consequence that your current lease could be considered legally void,” Mr Kippen said. “And according to these courts’ analyses, anyone who has already invested or is considering investing in such a structure is facing the immediate loss of the investment.” The good news, he said, is that secured leases can be restructured to provide actual long-term lease security legally and without any downside to the developer by securing the pre-paid renewal terms with a mortgage over the land involved. “It is a simple and straightforward legal structure that provides security for the investor. A current ‘Secured’ Lease can be restructured into this better and genuinely secure alternative, before it is too late. “As always,” he added, “you should engage competent legal and tax counsel in order to implement this mor tgage-based security structure successfully.”

More controversy caused by marine tour company Ekkapop Thongtub

T he b oat wa s fou nd moored at Ao Tonsai in the Noparatthara National Park. Police carried out a search of the vessel and questioned Boonsong Saikloy who takes care of the boat, the boat captain and crew members. Phi Phi Royal Park and Marine officers had been hunting for the owners of the Phuket based tour company which owns the boat after pictures posted on Facebook of tourists swimming amongst the fish went viral on social media. Marine conservationists
A tourist is seen in the bottom of the boat which is moored at Ao Tonsai. Photo: Thon Thamrongmawasawat. and the general public became upset after seeing the pictures on Thon Thamrongnawasawat’s Facebook page. It is alleged that the tour boat lures fish into the hull of the boat with food and then
closes the tank. Tourists are then allowed to swim with the fish. The fish are released once the trip is over. The person who posted the pictures was afraid that this
act would damage the marine biology of the area where the pictures were taken. Noparatthara Park chief, Chaiyathatch Boonphupantonti said yesterday, “This act is considered to be against the
Marine Park Acts (law) and has broken the Endangered Species Protection Act.” After questioning the boat’s staff they found that The Ocean Underworld is the name of the tour boat and it
does have all the registered paperwork. All the crew also had all the correct paperwork. The boat belongs to Nikom Ocha who own the Phi Phi Cruisers Company in Phuket. The boat is always anchored at Ao Tonsai and the tour company arranges for small boats to bring tourists to see and swim with the fish. Officials checked the bottom of the boat via a small walkway inside the boat and thirteen tourists were viewing the fish when officers arrived. The marine authorities have advised the owner of the boat that he is not using the boat in accordance with the registration papers and will have to pay a B10,000 fine. They have also told Phi Phi Cruisers Company that they are no longer allowed to moor the boat in the National Park area and that they should stop the operation with immediate effect. If marine authorities learn that the tour is continued they will take further action.

The main thing being that all of the 1,250 Arhantas ordained by the Buddha gathered to see the Buddha without scheduling. On that evening, the Buddha gave his core principles of the Buddhist Religion, “The Ovadhapatimokha”. These principles are to refrain from all sins, to do good deeds, and to make your mind clean. New multilingual signs, flyers and tourist info centres to clarify beach rules Nattha Thepbamrung reporter3@classactmedia.co.th
T
he Muang Phuket District Beach Protection Unit – whose role is to track progress on the new beach management system in Muang district – is preparing to launch new tourist information centres and place multilingual graphic signs at the district’s 10 beaches. The beaches in Muang District to get the signs and info centres include Kata Noi, Kata, Nui, Mai-Ngao, Karon Noi, Karon, Nai Harn, Yanui, Laemka, Ao Saen Bay and on Racha Yai Island (Batok Bay). The Beach Protection Unit confirmed details of the new tourist information campaign at a meeting at Karon municipality on Monday (February 23), held to create understanding about the new regulation signs and other details about the beach zones and new tourist information centers, which will be formally announced in an official opening ceremony expected to be held by the governor within the first week of March. The unit, which answers directly to the governor, comprises administration clerks (Palad Muang), Headmen (Kamnan), Village Chiefs (Pu Yai Baan), provincial and local Police, Royal Thai Navy Area 3 Command, as well as representatives from the local Tambon Administrations (OrBorTor), hotels, Civilian Security Volunteers, umbrella and masseur operators as well as local residents. Chaired by Supot Chanakij, Muang Phuket District Chief, the meeting was given a presentation explaining the signs, which clearly show what is/is not allowed in the special zones (the 10 per cent allocated for
umbrellas and chairs), as well as the rest of the beach area, which are being referred to as the “clean beach zone” The other signs presented included the plan of the beach specifying where the zoning areas and tourism information centers are. “The signs are translated into four languages, Thai, English, Chinese and Russian and will be made from strong materials such as metal, acrylic or stainless steel. There will be flyers publishing [details] about the regulations as well, but this has to wait for approval from the governor and Phuket TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand),” said Chief Supot. He explained that the TAT requested that flyers be designed so that all tourists, no matter where they are from, could understand the regulations clearly. “The flyers will be very beneficial in informing people about the rules, as we can distribute them everywhere, including hotels and restaurants.” Mr Supot added that he would be holding a meeting with hotel operators on Thursday (February 26) to discuss the plans for flyer distribution. The district chief added that his team have been mandated to monitor beaches and write daily reports for the governor, with at least five team members assigned to each beach per day. “We will be carrying out public relations not enforcement,” he clarified. “Our main role is to monitor and report about progress and give information to tourists, not arrest or expel them, even when we find them using umbrellas or chairs in the ‘clean beach zone’.” The signs clearly show what is/is not allowed on the

For example, in the “clean beach zone” beach goers can bring beach mattresses, mats and sheets as well as nonalcoholic beverages and light snacks. But they are not permitted to bring traditional beach loungers, tables, chairs and umbrellas. Massage services, full meals, smoking and littering are strictly prohibited in this
area too. In the special zones, beach goers are permitted to bring their own umbrellas and mats, and use massage services available there too. However, smoking, selling of food, consuming of large meals with packaging rubbish, and littering are also prohibited, as have always been by the Public Health Act. Meanwhile, at a meeting held by the Kathu team on Wednesday (February 25), it
was stressed that the process be slowed down as there were still some issues which need addressing, including making exceptions for the eldery and handicapped. “We have reached a conclusion to allow the eldery and handicapped to use beach loungers, chairs or any item their condition requires. They, or people who go with them, have to contact the tourism information centre to let them know about their condition and
to get assistance,” said Vice Governor Suthee Thongyam who chaired the meeting. He went on to say, “We are still having problems with regards to unregistered beach vendors on Kamala and Patong beaches. “Last Sunday, I went for a walk and took pictures on Patong and Kamala beach and found many umbrellas outside the special zone. There were also some prohibited beach loungers as well. “I believe the operators who attempt to do this are not registered, registered vendors would have tried their best to keep everything in order and to save their right to make a living on the beach.” He ordered the local beach management committee members including Pu Yai Baan and Kamnan to strictly check the list of registered vendors again and also to survey the sites. “The governor’s order allows only people who are registered and ʻpoor̕ to work in the areas. “The definition of ʻpoor’ is those vendors who clearly cannot find another job and have to work in the areas for real. Not those who register to send somebody else to work or pass their right to others. “The zoning for Patong is being well-managed by putting the 10 per cent zones in the same areas as the five dedicated swimming zones, but this is still way more than 10 per cent and we will have to readjust it once again. “As for Kamala beach, t h at i n it ia l ly h a d t h r e e special zones but they have asked for t hat to be i ncreased to five. “Next Monday (March 2), we will go to Kamala beach to specify the borderlines once again,” said V/gov Suthee.

Wastewater canal on Racha Yai to be dredged Nattha Thepbamrung

A
committee – recently established to solve longpersisting wastewater issues on Racha Yai Island, south of Phuket – designated February 26 as the deadline to begin work on a canal dredging project. The dredging is aimed to allow for more treated sewage to be discharged to the sea at a swifter rate. A meeting chaired by Vice Governor Suthee Thongyam, was attended by representatives from both the public and private sector, on behalf of local hotels, resorts, fishermen and diving companies. “We have planned to solve the problem [of untreated wastewater generated by the island’s population] by dredging the canal to drain the wastewater and treat it before the water flows into the sea. The canal will be separated into three parts, the beginning part, middle and the end of the canal,” V/gov Suthee told The Phuket News after the meeting. “The first part is close to land owned by Raya Father Resort and

The canal runs from the Raya Father Resort and Baan Raya Resort & Spa to the Rayaburi Resort. Baan Raya Resort and Spa. The hotels agreed to cooperate with official agents to dredge the canal. “The second part is located near a mosque, and runs through public land. There is no problem for these two parts but the last part of the canal is near Rayaburi Resort, on both sides [of the canal]. The owners have not yet attended any meetings of the committee.” He explained that owners of the
resort have not given any indication that they would cooperate with the dredging plan, noting that land on one side of the canal is suspect of land encroachment, and that actual title boundaries are still unclear. However, the Vice Governor said he wanted to focus on solving the filthy water issue first. The first two parts will be dredged as soon as the committee can source the necessary machines,
including an excavator, truck and high capacity pump, he said. Sludge from the canal will be pumped to the canal’s sides to form dykes while water that is pumped out from the canal will be used to water plants around the area, or treated before being drained into the sea, he added. “The filthy water is an urgent agenda that we need to hurry to finish. It will take around 1-2 weeks
to complete once the machines are in place. We have to finish it before the rainy season comes and all the dirty water and sludge gets washed into the sea. “For the last part of the canal, I will have to talk with Rayaburi owners about dredging the canal near their land,” said V/gov Suthee. “After we’ve solved the urgent [wastewater] issue, land officers will go to survey the land that belongs to Rayaburi, to ensure boundaries are clear.” He added that the plan to dredge the canal is only a temporary solution. After the canal is cleared, hotels, resorts, restaurants or any business operators that drain wastewater into the canal must install a proper water treatment system, he insisted. “Some resorts, especially restaurants, drain wastewater into the canal without any process or treatment. “After the dredging is complete, we will send a team to inspect if all of them [those who discharge wastewater into the canal] have installed proper water treatment systems, and whether they are using it or not.”

Who’s to blame for the road carnage?
B
y far the most common type of news story we get are those about traffic accidents. It’s no secret that Thailand’s roads and drivers are among the most dangerous on the planet. According to one recent study by the University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute, the kingdom last year had the second-highest road fatalities rate, of 44 dead each year per 100,000 people, behind only Namibia (45). Indeed, accidents – big and small and involving every type of vehicle or object that can make it onto the road – are all too common here. Last week, we reported about a multiple-vehicle collision caused by a recklessly speeding lorry that smashed into a van stopped at a red

light. This week yet another bus went out of control on Patong Hill. But while large vehicles are often guilty for the carnage, they don’t deserve all the blame. Many times, it is motorbike drivers who are guilty, such as when they decide to drive on the wrong side of the road, at night, with no lights on. Crashes are all too often blamed on faulty vehicles or “bad roads”. But the fact is that accidents are much more likely to be caused by driver supidity – speeding, falling asleep at the wheel, fiddling with a smart phone or driving drunk. You, our readers, experience and see it every day and that’s why we’d like to hear from you in our latest poll. The poll – which runs online until March 6 – asks
readers to identify what they think are the biggest hazards on the island’s roads. There are six possible answers, and voters can choose up to two. Choices include poor road maintenance and design; reckless driving by large transport vehicles; motorbikes and three-wheelers; private cars; pedestrians, cyclists and other obstructions. Voters are asked to identify their road demographic – whether they drive a motorbike, four-wheel vehicle, large transport vehicle, switch between a motorbike and car, or ride a bicycle, walk or use public transport. HAVE YOUR SAY Moving in the right direction Re: Phuket vendors want their beach back Whenever the plight of the poor vendors comes up, I like to point out, there is no unemployment on Phuket. I’m very pleased with the tentative progress the NCPO has made. Pinot Great to see the beaches are now free of these commercial interests. I have enjoyed my own mat and umbrella and am glad to see the end of the vendors using the public beach as their own. It aint, and frankly if you can’t swing it to get organised don’t bother. Why are the beaches covered in rubbish? the local governments need to wake up and smell the roses , this is the biggest issue facing Phuket ! Malfunconz There were so many beaches where tourists didn’t have the option to decline the chairs. They either had to pay the chair thug or go somewhere else. As far as beach vendors, some are OK, but it was out of control, with people relaxing and just getting badgered every 30 seconds to buy anything from
bed sheets to teak motorcycles. As for food and drink, I think it should be available, and it is. But come down to Surin in the evening and see all the trash left behind. Despicable some days. As for smoking, glad to see it banned, although too many smokers to enforce. That is too bad, because the last thing I want to do at the beach with my family is suck down poisonous second-hand smoke. On some days the entire outdoor air stinks of this poison, and people don’t have the right to poison me and my family. Some people have been complaining that every day is becoming worse for tourists, but for many of us, things are moving in the right direction. Ed Sanders
molished, the sun loungers are no longer available for the tourists. And what is now happening is happening is that we now have a car park that is situated ON the beach opposite the Naiyang Beach resort. It is growing day by day, yet nothing is said. Yes the beaches are public property and Thailand is trying to gain best beach status on their beaches, but a car park? Will this help? Am I wrong? Vehicles are for roads, people are for beaches. Tourists don’t want to sit where there are car exhaust fumes. Let’s try and get more votes for Thailand’s beaches. Beachgoer

Sceptical about dirty water stats Re: New soil, water and chemistry testing centre opens in Phuket I am happy this is opening, but, like many people, I am skeptical that any honest statistics on water quality at Phuket beaches will be released. We all know that the e-coli count has to be off the charts near the shore, and I doubt that officials would have any desire to publish these results. I would think hotels also have no desire to see water quality testing conducted, since they are huge contributors to the problem, and despite having lots of resources to address it, they would rather keep sending their millions of baht back to their home countries while leaving the problems for Thailand to figure out. The new high-end taxi service which will be launched in May 2015 is aimed at improving passenger safety. Anan Wongbenjarat, board chairman of Nakhonchai Air Co, said the first fleet of 500 of Hybrid Toyota Priuses will hit the roads in April, with the full service set to launch in May. “The luxury sedan brand is employed to create a sense of pride among the customer, while the hybrid vehicle also saves energy and is environmental

The cars have been promised to arrive within 5-10 minutes after receiving a booking confirmation. Nakhonchai Air is also working with DLT to include a ‘lady

The service will compete with international app-based taxi services like Uber, which Thai authorities deemed illegal last year because the vehicles were not registered in accordance with state regulations. Zip it: Aussies do deal for Lanka asylum help
he Australian government agreed not to criticise Sri Lanka’s alleged human-rights abuses in order to secure cooperation on stopping asylumseeker boats heading to Australia, Sri Lanka’s new prime minister said in an interview published Monday (February 25). Australia has been criticised at home and abroad for its tough immigration policies, including sending asylum seekers to camps in impoverished Papua New Guinea and Nauru, where they face long periods of detention. Conservative Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa last year agreed to a controversial deal allowing Australian naval ships to send asylum seekers intercepted at sea directly back to Sri Lanka.
T
Sri Lankan asylum seekers who were sent back by Australia cover their faces as they wait to enter a magistrate’s court in the southern port district of Galle. The United Nations has launched an inquiry into war crimes allegedly committed by both Sri Lankan
state forces and ethnic Tamil rebels in the final months of South Asian country’s 26year civil war that ended in
2009, saying the government has failed to investigate properly. Sri Lanka rejects such allegations as interfer-
ence in its internal affairs. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was elected earlier this year,
told The Australian newspaper that members of the former government were personally involved in the people-smuggling trade but stopped after receiving assurances Australia would not criticise its rights record. “It was being done by people with Rajapaksa connections, but once this deal was done between Australia and the Rajapaksa government, where you looked the other way, then the secretary of defence got the navy to patrol,” he told The Australian. “You could not have got anyone out of this country without someone in the security system looking the other way, the police or the navy,” Mr Wickremesinghe said. A spokeswoman for Mr Abbott did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the report. Bangkok Post

On the Myanmar side, it is located to the south of Kenglap, Thachilek District, in Shan State. This bridge is about 700 kilometres north of Vientiane, 940 kilometres from Naypyidaw of Myanmar, and about 1,020 kilometres from Hanoi. WHO calls for use of ‘smart’ syringes to stem diseases T Liberians rejoice as Ebola curfew is lifted LI BER I A A N D I TS neighbours Guinea and Sierra Leone have registered more than 9,500 Ebola deaths since December 2013, although the real picture could be far worse as it is feared many cases have not been reported. Panicked by the intense spread of the epidemic, Liberia imposed the curfew on August 6, initially from 9pm to 6am but subsequently relaxed, applying from midnight until 6am. The end of the lockdown was announced last Friday (February 21) as the United States said President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf would visit this week to discuss the gruelling task of economic recovery with President Barack Obama. “I am very happy for this day. I could no longer make money. Usually on Sundays we get the higher numbers of customers but they used to leave (early) because of the curfew,” bar owner Cecelia Yerkerson told AFP, some time after midnight. “Now that the curfew is lifted you can see that they are still here at this time and don't even think about the time. So I am happy.” A few kilometres away, several young girls break into song as they wait for the

waiter to bring their drinks at another bar. “Free, we are free! No more curfew breaking! Free, we are free,” they sing. Jacqueline Dahn, 21, gets up and dances, shouting over the noise of the celebration that her newfound freedom feels like getting out of jail. “For several months I have not been out at this time. It was like being in prison every evening,” she said. “I am very happy for the lifting of the curfew. I don’t know how to express my happiness.” AFP
he World Health Organization has called on healthcare providers around the globe to switch to syringes that can only be used once in order to better battle deadly diseases spread by needle sharing. In new guidelines released Monday (February 23) the UN health agency “detailed recommendations highlighting the value of safety features for syringes, including devices that protect health workers against accidental injury.” Dangerous injection practices led to the accidental infection worldwide of 1.7 million people with hepatitis B, 315,000 with hepatitis C and as many as 33,800 with HIV in 2010, according to a 2014 WHOsponsored study. The new “smart” syringes recommended by the WHO include features that prevent them from being used a second time. Some have a plunger that breaks if someone tries to pull it back out following an injection. Others have metal clips that prevent the plunger from being pulled back after it is used and another type has a needle that retracts into the syringe after a shot. “Adoption of safety-engineered syringes is absolutely critical to protecting people worldwide from becoming infected with HIV, hepatitis and other diseases,” said Gottfried Hirnschall, head of WHO's HIV/AIDS Department. “This should be an urgent priority for all countries,” he added. However, these types of needles cost at least twice the B90 – B120 the regular ones
cost when ordered through a UN agency. Accidental infections are a global phenomenon. A 2007 hepatitis C outbreak in the American state of Nevada was traced back to a doctor re-using a syringe. In Cambodia nearly 200 people living near Battambang
tested positive in December 2014 for HIV and are believed to have been infected by dangerous injection practices. Cutting down on the number of injections would also help reduce disease, WHO said. Of the 16 billion injections each year only 10 per cent are for immunisations, injected
birth control and procedures like blood transfusions. The remaining 90 per cent are used to administer medicine and in many cases the WHO says these injections are unnecessary. It appears excess injections are due to patients’ beliefs that injections are the best form of treatment, but there also seems to be an economic reason. “For many health workers in developing countries, giving injections in private practice supplements salaries that may be inadequate to support their families;” said Edward Kelley, a director at WHO. While re-use of needles remains a major problem, there are signs that previous calls to stop the practice have had some impact. From 2000–2010 needle sharing dropped by a factor of seven in developing countries and number of injections per person fell from 3.4 to 2.9, WHO said. Bangkok Post

Phuket Hotels Association wants to give a single voice O
ver the past decade tourism in Phuket has experienced a number of damaging events, from the tsunami through political crises to international financial turmoil, all of which have affected tourism. Throughout these events, despite being the largest economic force for the province, the tourism private sector has had no single voice for speaking to the government, to members of the industry and to the media. This is the aim of the newlyformed Phuket Hotels Association (PHA), which will officially come into being on Sunday (March 1). The PHA is based loosely on the example of the Bali Hotels Association, which took a leading role in reviving that island’s fortunes after the massive terrorist bombing of 2002. The formation of the PHA has been spearheaded by Bill Barnett of C9 Hotelworks. In 2015, he explained at the inaugural meeting on February 16 at the Trisara Academy, challenges to the industry are enormous, rang-
Bill Barnett (left) of C9 Hotelworks and Bill Black President of Montara ouline their plans for PHA. ing from the massive decline of the Russian ruble, to Thai Airways’ financial difficulties – which are seeing a shrinking of routes – and continuing geopolitical events both in Thailand and abroad. “Nearby destinations such as Krabi and Phang Nga are also directly benefitting from the island’s
flight capacity. As media around the globe jump on the negative press bandwagon, what can the private sector do?” he asked. Putting his money where his mouth is, Mr Barnett has pledged to provide one full-time staff member in his own offices, along with working space and a separate registered
office for the organization. Anthony Lark of Montara Hospitality Group is to be director of the PHA while Michael Ayling of Royal Phuket Marina is to be treasurer. David Keen from Quo in Bangkok has agreed to work on the destination marketing initiative for a new Phuket-centered brand.
Well known hotelier Bill Black, President of Montara, is to head up a hospitality education initiative. The PHA will hold monthly meetings at member-hotels, in rotation. Only hotel GMs or owners are eligible to be members, Mr Barnett said, as this has proved an effective practice in Bali. Looking at initiatives in 2015, the key result aims of the PHA are: •Government liaison – to establish a continuous dialog between the Phuket government and the PHA. •Branding – create a common campaign to revitalise Phuket as a brand, led by the private sector. •Education – to create a platform for training and upgrading of service skills in Phuket for the industry. •Create a shared information database for hotels and, in the case of crisis, a single voice to communicate with the media, the industry and the local community. Mr Barnett said he does not believe this is too high-minded. Given an island with this much brand penetration, and considerable hotel marketing ability, he says, coming together is possible.

THE BIG LIST Six Feet Under For some, life truly starts after death. You can’t spell funeral without fun. In fact, these aren’t funerals ... they are post-life shindigs!
Harley rider: When Billy Standley of Mechanicsburg, Ohio kicked the bucket back in 2014, his family decided to carry out his long-discussed final wish: to be buried on his 1967 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Standley apparently talked about this for years and even wanted the boys down at his local garage to see it. So his sons made a casket out of plexiglass, hired embalmers to prepare the body, and put the corpse on top of the bike for one final ride through town before he was lowered into the grave. Fulfilling the bet: Back in September 2009, Barry Delaney attended the funeral of his best friend, Private Kevin Elliott, wearing a skimpy, neon-yellow dress and high pink socks. Delaney was simply fulfilling a deal they made before Private Elliott was shipped off to Afghanistan: If one of them died, the other had to wear a dess to the funeral. According to reports, family and friends of Private Elliott were warned in advance that Delaney intended to keep his word. Funeral rehearsal: In April 2013, a funeral in China somehow took place although there was no dead body. The reason? She was still alive. Zeng Jia, a 22-year-old student from Wuhan invited friends and family to come to a rehearsal of her own funeral just so she would have the chance to check it out. She spent her entire savings for the event, complete with makeup artists, flowers and a Hello Kitty doll on her chest. After an hour of lying in her own casket, surrounded by “mourners”, Zeng stood up and delivered a eulogy in her own honour. Like an Egyptian: In order to spend eternity like a pharaoh, Fred Guentert was willing to pay the price during his life. Since the mid–1980s, the Orlando-native has been crafting a coffin that would make Ramesses II blush. Made out of treated cedar to resist rot, and with a hand-carved image of the Egyptian god Osiris on the lid, the coffin weighs 136 kg and is over 213 cm-tall. The interior includes a full-size painting of the sky goddess Isis. The entire thing cost him US$10,000 (B326,000).

Dutchman survives fall from World’s End
S
ri Lankan troops rescued a Dutch honeymooner who became the first person to survive a fall from the World’s End, a 1,200-metre cliff that is one of the country’s main tourist attractions. The 35-year-old man had taken a few steps back to take pictures of his new bride when he flew off the unprotected cliff, army spokesman Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera said. “He was extremely lucky because he fell on top of a tree about 130 feet from the top,” Jayaweera said. “He is the first person to survive a fall from World’s End.” Troops used ropes to reach the man and winch him to safety. Some 40 soldiers were involved in the rescue which was later backed by a military helicopter. The man had to be evacuated from the area, however, on the shoulders of troops who carried him over a distance of five kilometres to the nearest point

Oy vey: the alphabet name in Colombia QUICK: WHAT HAS 26 letters and makes asbolutely no sense? A teacher in Colombia, whose current name is Ladyzunga Cyborg, is in the process of finalizing documents that would change her name to Abcdefg Hijklmn Opqrs. T he 36 -yea r- old la st changed her name – to Ladyzunga – just two years ago and told reporters that she feels the need to “redefine” herself according to her mood. With a passion for fetish clothing and bondage events, the Bogota-native admitted that the main reason she changes her name is for people
to never recognise her. “But it’s not because I was disturbed by [the name] but because I wanted to always bring an element of surprise,” she said. In addition to teaching art and photography at three universities, she also teaches fashion design on the side. An official from the Colombian National Registry said, “If a civil notary had refused to modify ner name in the civil regisry, he would have broken his work obligation. Basically no matter how unusual, this is something that should always be allowed,” he said.
IN THE WEEKS LEADing up to his death, 50-yearold Renato Garcia took a liking to dressing up as legendary DC Comics superhero the Green Lantern. The Puer to Rican’s devotion to wearing the costume was so intense, his family decided to dress his embalmed corpse inside it while propped up at the funeral. “He was always very helpful,” Garcia’s sister and caretaker, Milagros Garcia, said. “You beckoned and he was always there.” Garcia, who died of respiratory failure just weeks after finding the costume in a bag of donated clothes, is not the only Puerto Rican to have been dressed up at his own funeral. Former professional boxer Christopher Rivera,
who was murdered in 2014, was stood up in a corner of a boxing ring as he donned just shorts and gloves at his own funeral.
US police ‘seek’ Disney snow queen Jim Henson: When beloved puppeteer and Muppets creator Jim Henson died back in 1990, he was given a send-off the likes of which have been hard to top. As per his wishes, none of the mourners were permitted to wear black and all of them waved brightly-coloured foam butterflies. The public ceremony concluded with a sing-along by several Sesame Street and Muppets characters as they bellowed a medley of his favourite tunes including Just One Person and Bein’ Green.

n February 21, the Rotary Club of Patong Beach organised the Happy Home Kid’s Day Out for the children of Happy Home (Patong) with morning beach games at Kata Noi Beach and then an afternoon tour at the Phuket Zoo. With the help of many Rotarians, volunteers plus sponsors such as Eurothai Restaurant, Chamber of Secrets, Katathani and Phuket Zoo, the children had a half day of team-building games at Kata Noi, lunch and then the afternoon at the Phuket Zoo. 95 per cent of all children from Happy Home are non-Thais and study at the Happy Home because they are not admitted to Thai schools due to a lack
of Thai language skills. Happy Home’s children are considered to be children at risk and is supported by World Vision. They are in need of school supplies, financial support and volunteers to teach special skills. Reach out, visit W: RotaryPatong.org

Love, charity and hope Dalia Hilmi editor1@classactmedia.co.th
A
decade after the boxing day Tusnami struck the Indian Ocean and took the lives of thousands all across Asia, Alex Nightingale, a dedicated, determined and loving man decided to open up his heart about how he lost his best friend in the disaster. Alex Nightingale, son of music DJ Annie Nightingale, and owner of EC1 Music Agency in London, England, has spent the last ten years bottling up his emotions. Sam Archer was on holiday in Khao Lak, one of the worst hit areas in Thailand, with her husband Patrice and baby Ruby Rose. I recently went to interview Alex, where he opened up about Sam and the friendship they shared. Even though he lost someone over ten years ago, the love and respect he continues to hold for his friend was evident in the way he described her character. Alex first met Sam back in 1994 during the football world cup and quickly became friends with her and her friends: Sarah and Jess. “The lethal trio” according to Alex. He recalls their first meeting: “Sam hated football, her friend punched me in the mouth within the first two hours, and the police were called. Fact”. An amusing statement, considering the pair then went on to develop a strong friendship. They would spend their days partying at festivals including Glastonbury, planning trips, attending gigs, weekends of wine tasting. Sam coined the nickname for Alex, “Grumpy old git”, which Alex still holds dear to his heart. Sam had a deep love for her friends, fashion, travelling, and her boxer dog, Lucian. “She was a talented, beautiful and genuine person, always putting smiles upon her friend’s faces. You always knew where you stood with her. “My god, if she wasn’t happy you’d know about it. The arguments we had were legendary” Alex said with a smile on his face. “She had a way with people. She even managed to get her way backstage to a bull fight (which she loathed). She just said “Je suis avec la bull” to security, and bang, they let her in. That was just her style. I’ll never meet anyone else like her.” Sam was a hardworking girl, which quickly be@thephuketnews
came evident when she became a model booker. Sam was a close friend of Kate Moss, and she became Kate’s fashion agent when she moved to Paris. Sam lived life to the maximum. But when it came to work, she knew how to switch it on. She was loyal. Successful. And intelligent.” Sam would spend her days chilling out in Café Noir, one of her favourite bars, where Lucian would always have his own seat. In 2000, Sam married Patrice. They had beautiful baby, Ruby Rose. After the disaster, Patrice and Alex spent weeks in Khao Lak searching for Sam and Ruby. In 2005, the family founded a charity, samandruby. com, and asked for donations to help children in the areas devastated by the tsunami, to rebuild schools

and sponsor teachers. One of the many reasons Alex is doing this is “because [he] wants to find some sort of closure”. Alex came across the Home & Life Phang Nga Foundation where he instantly connected with the children and the volunteers. Happily, the Sam & Ruby charity allowed Alex to raise funds on their behalf for the orphanage. He took the initiative and contacted various friends and acquaintances in the music industry who kindly donated items to help the charity. Sam was actually the agent of John Squire’s (The Stone Roses) wife, Sophie. Alex emailed John to see if he could create some art for the Sam & Ruby charity. John created this extraordinary image, which was privately sold and the funds were donated to the charity. Following his recent visit, which had a positvely profound effect on him, he sent a short email to the founder of the orphanage, Mr Bhudit (Root) Maneejak. He asked one question, “Please tell me one significant item that would enhance the children’s quality of life?” They responded within five minutes stating a reading library would be their wish. On January 28, I went along with Alex who presented sufficient funds to build “The Sam And Ruby Library”, named by the families request. It is set to open early June. The library has already received computers from the charity. Local children, not attached to the orphanage will also have access to the library. The children were all so sunny, warm, friendly and immediately greeted
us when we walked in. I could see why Alex connected to them. I could see how much Alex, and others have helped the children. Their positive energy left me lost for words. “The Sam & Ruby Library will inspire creativity, positivity, laughter and love. It will become a beautiful tribute to Sam & Ruby”, Alex explained. Alex explained how the looks on the kid’s faces and how much the charity has helped them and many others, has made this project fulfilling. After the tsunami, Root helped many homeless and parentless kids. He eventually set up the orphanage in 2007, and locals from all across the Nahmkan village came to volunteer. Many sponsors have helped along the way, including Alex, and have worked together to help the children and enhance their lives where possible. Even the hotel staff at Sala Hotel have been so helpful and generously donated rice. “The library will be open with lots of light in the room. The first part of the project will hopefully be completed by the end of March. “Everyone is really happy when Alex comes and visits. He’s so funny and makes everyone laugh. He said he would help and he really has. Everything we do is for the children. It’s their home.” By the end of last week, Alex had sent further funds to Home & Life which will now enable the library to be completely funded by the funds raised on behalf of the charity. “I feel like this whole journey has been fulfilling. Obviously the first reason was to raise funds for deserving causes, but the second purpose of my trip was to go back to the temple in Takua Pa where I witnessed scenes that you cannot imagine. “I’ve been back to Thailand many times, but something inside me this time just told me to do it. But in all those times that I have visited, and even driven past that temple, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t face walking under the red gates into the temple. I shut my eyes, counted to 10 and I walked under the gates. At the time, it really shook me up. Now, I feel better for doing it. “I’ve rarely been able to discuss it with anybody. Often, it’s easier to talk to people I don’t know about it. “This trip has made me a happier person. I mean you could see from the look on my face at the orphanage. “At the end of it all, I just feel proud that I knew her. We had some amazing times together. And, when I think of Sam, she always makes me smile”.

he first lesson with a private student is always unnerving. Neither the teacher nor the student knows each other very well and that can manifest itself in the form of nervousness, anxiety, shyness or worse. Without proper preparation, things can go downhill in a heartbeat. Avoid the uncomfortable silence and looks of disinterest by following these eight easy steps to success. Plan B – If you don’t know your student very well, be sure that you’ve got variations of the same activities that are slightly easier and slightly more difficult than what you’ve planned. This means more work in the beginning, but contingency plans become less important in due time. Over plan – Ensure you’re not going to run out of material before the class ends by
THEPHUKETNEWS.COM
adding 20-25 per cent of the class duration into your lesson plan. If you don’t need it, you can use it later; if you do need it you’ll be glad you have it. Increase relevance – Great lessons bomb simply because they’re generic and being used to teach individuals who have individualised needs. Turn generic lessons into personalised lessons by tailoring them to your student’s location, profession, goals and needs. Listen – This is particularly important in the first lesson, teacher talk time must be kept in check. Students should know that they’ll be able to practice their speaking skills while you’re their teacher. Limit personal introductions, eliminate procedural comments and never interrupt your student while they’re talking. Look the part – We’ve said it before and we’ll continue to say it until teachers stop showing up for lessons in casual attire: teachers need to look the part. First impressions matter in Thailand and you want to leave your student feeling confident you’re a professional by looking like one. You can always go casual later if it’s appropriate. Be punctual – So what if “Thai time” is a real thing and students are almost always late. Teachers should be early, prepared and ready to start the class as soon as the student sits down. Students will be happier knowing they’re learning with

someone who can handle something as basic as punctuality. Limit corrections – Nothing ruins a lesson quite like a persnickety teacher so let language errors fly. Note them down and address them later, but unless they’re directly related to the language point, or they’re being repeated often, leave them be and let your learner feel good about their language skills. Sanook – The importance of this cannot be overstated. In order to keep a student coming back to class, they must feel as if they’re having fun. Far too many Western teachers fail to understand this and then wonder why their student stops attending class. Make the first lesson as fun as possible; make the student smile, laugh and forget that they’re actually learning. Do that, and you’ve got a student for life. Assuming the first lesson was a success, end it on a high note by praising the student for their performance, confirming the next class time, and thanking them for coming.

CASH IN THAT TRASH How to be part of the solution for Phuket’s mounting waste issue
HAPPY HABITAT Steven Layne editor@classactmedia.co.th
Did you know that polystyrene is the only type of plastic that no recycling depot in Phuket will buy from you? It has zero value in the market.
Wong Panit is one of many recycling depots / waste separation plants on the island that will buy most of your junk to transport and resell it to plants in Central Thailand for a premium.
@thephuketnews
P
huket officials recently received approval for a request of half-abillion-baht to repair the island’s old, and currently-defunct incinerator, and thus address what they say is an “impending crisis”. The old incinerator had been taken off-line after it was damaged for “over-use”. Now, the second and current incinerator is running at full capacity, burning some 700 tonnes of our solid waste every day, the same amount of which is brought to the facility day-in, day-out. As the amount of waste continues to rise in sync with an expanding population, which is growing as much as 10 per cent annually, our dilemma persists. At this rate, Phuket will be back to square one in just three years, with its incinerators operating at maximum capacity again, and thus causing the the already-overflowing landfills to mount even higher. Even the more conservative annual growth rate projections of 7pc, gives us only about five years, before we’re at critical mass again – that’s a B100-million-a-year stop-gap solution funded by you, me and the rest of the taxpayers. But anyone with a little bit of common sense would agree that the solution to the island’s waste issue does not solely lie in our capacity to dispose (bury or burn) garbage, but more in our ability to manage it. It is estimated that half of the rubbish being burnt at the incinerator is organic waste – vegetation, wood, spoiled produce and leftovers – much of it which is wet and thus requiring more energy to burn off. The rest of it is all the other filthy plastic and packaging remnants of the 21st century’s mass consumer hangover The good news is ordinary folks like you and me can be part of the solution, not just the problem. Education and awareness are key, and here some guidelines. •Check your consumer habits. Do you really need that iced-coffee in a single-use plastic cup, with a plastic straw, and that trendy little plastic handle, every morning to start work? And to have one or two little items placed in a bag? Consider getting reusable cloth bags, and beverage and food containers instead.
•Stop supporting irresponsible consumer packaging. Individually-wrapped snacks, crisps, candy bars and most food-like products found at the convenient store – all the left-over plastic wrappers and food packages are generally not recycled here (see notes below). •Eat quality food that doesn’t generate waste. Most people are in a rush these days and insist on eating their meals in polystyrene containers. Did you know that polystyrene is the only type of plastic that no recycling depot in Phuket will buy from you? It has zero value in the recycle market, at least in Southern Thailand where there are no manufacturers with buy-back policies. •Make a dedicated trip to your local recycling depot, and earn some extra income. Sort your crap out ahead of time to save time. The depots will buy almost everything in your bin – bottles, batteries, paper packages, tin, alumnium, steel and plastics (barring polystyrene) – as long as everything is clearly sorted and not contaminated (wet). If you can’t be bothered going to a depot, at least support a community recycle agent. Many poor people here make a living off your laziness. You can see them in Saleng motorbike with side-cart driving around town, collecting rubbish for re-sell. Some of them will buy directly from you at lower-
than-market value; but all are happy to receive your recyclables for free too. I recently made the trip to Phuket’s largest recycling depot and separation plant, Wong Panit, located in Kathu (Geo: 7.912079, 98.351838 Tel: 076 203271). Here’s what I loaded into my car and sold for B215. Mixed glass (mostly beer bottles of varying brands): @ 50 satang per kilogramme, I got B6.85 for 13.7kg. Cardboard boxes: @ B4/kg, I got B23.6 for 5.9kg Black and white paper: @B7/kg, I got B28 for 4kg Colour newspaper/magazines: @B2/kg, I got B2.8 for 1.4kg Bundled up plastic bags: @50 satang/ kg, I got 35 satang for 700 grams Aluminium cans: @B37/kg, I got B99.9 for 2.7kg Tin cans (iced coffee and soup cans): @ B4/kg, I got B9.2 for 2.3kg Light steel: @B5/kg, I got B45 for 9kg Had I just disposed of it all at the incinerator, I would have had to pay B20 (@ B500 a tonne). For my next depot visit, I plan to sell off old batteries and different types of plastic bottles and containers, which I shall relay about in a future issue. Watch this space.

side from being the General Manager of Mövenpick Resort and Spa in Karon, Hansruedi Frutiger is also an avid traveller. His most recent adventure was to the charming North Africa city of Marrakech. Here he has provided us with beautiful photos and a daily log from his journey, which we’ve broken up into two parts for your reading pleasure.
From Phuket to Marrakech I left on the early morning of January 25 on an Emirates Airlines flight from Phuket to Charles de Gaulle Airport, Paris via Dubai. Upon landing, I transferred on a bus to Orly Airport, which took about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and checked in at the Best Western Hotel close to the Airport so I could take a morning flight to Marrakech in Morocco.
I flew with Royal Air Maroc from Paris Orly to Marrakech. The flight was calm and the service basic; I guess I am spoiled from my flights with Asian carriers. Why Marrakech? The central region of Morocco is the most exiting and diverse destination in the country, the biggest draw-card is the pink city of Marrakech. The city in the Maghreb region is approx. 1,000-years-old and features a stunning setting against the towering snow-capped Atlas mountains. Somehow, this vibrant “bursting at the seams” city exists on the edge of the Sahara. Beyond the souks, the Medina is an ideal place to explore private palaces and Riad mansions, many of which now provide the city’s most atmospheric accommodation. After a short taxi ride from the airport, I arrived on the “Jemaa el fna”, a crazy place for the common European tourist. After a few minute’s walk with one of the Riad’s very friendly staff, I reached a place of peace and quiet – just what I was looking for. Everyone at the Riad is trying to make you feel at home and any wish is taken care of. The reception desk helps to make arrangements without pushing you to buy what you don’t want. The rooms are spacious with a homey feel and the breakfast is good. I found no reason to complain. Note that this Angsana branded Resort, or Riad, is a place located in the Medina, which you have to go through to get anywhere when you go out. I wanted exactly that, but some might feel annoyed. For those who want to avoid the Medina, there are hotels in the new town area. Paris has its Cathedrals, New York

its Sky scrapers, but Riads are what set Marrakech apart. These spectacular mud brick court yard mansions are the place to unwind after a busy day. Push through the brass studded doors and you find yourself in a calm place. Once in a while, you can spot a cat, or two or three, sitting relaxed on a sofa. Over the years these typical family homes have been sold and converted to small guest houses. The Main Square is like an open air theatre. In the daytime, snake charmers blast oboes to keep the serpents calm. Not for me. There’s also henna tattoos, artists, and plenty of options to enjoy a freshly squeezed orange or grapefruit juice. The various activities don’t stop until shadows fall and hundreds of chefs come to the square, accompanied with music and dancers galore. Come early to witness the spectacular shows. I also visited the museum of Marrakech, which was formerly a palace. Inside are traditional arts and crafts, including embroidery, colourful pottery, inlaid knives and swords. I also went to Maison Tiskwin to get a feel of what it was like to travel to Timbuktu and back in the old days. The journey is displayed in each room, which represents a caravan, showing the Sahara to Marrakech route via Camel through the Atlas mountains. Lots of carpets and other artefacts to bring you to another time. As it was January, it was quite cold, dropping down to a degree Celsius at night, but warming back up to 18-20 degrees during the day. This journey will continue in a fortnight.

T
he Andaman Wine Club have put together an exciting trip to Spain this September giving attendees a fine taste of three different wine regions. The itinerary includes culinary excursions to a variety of restaurants – from simple tapas bars to exclusive Michelin star locations– with stays in both small boutique, historical hotels and wine estates. Participants can expect to enjoy a programme full of culture, gourmet cooking classes, winery visits and historical sights of Spain. Organiser Bart Duykers will be leading the trip and assist participants with whatever they need. Bart recently told The Phuket News in an interview that after such a successful trip to Italy in 2013, they decided to host yet another journey, offering locals and expats the opportunity to travel in quite a unique way. The trip will be from September 19 – 28, flying from Phuket to Barcelona via Dubai on Emirates. The trip consists of five areas in total: Barcelona – Priorat – Rioja - Ribera del Duero – Madrid. The programme and trip have been planned for September because of the harvest month, so a lot activity is expected to take place. “This year we put together a good selection of high quality wineries. Accommodation has been arranged in small yet upscale hotels with rich historical origins.” Bart says the outing is a wonderful opportunity for people to explore something different, somewhere off the beaten track. “The trip is more about learning. It’s not just an
educational tour, but, there’s a lot of areas to explore. We will be staying in very historical hotels. We will be going to wineries, some of them over 80 years old. “People can not only just learn about Spanish wine, but also Spanish culture. We’ll have cooking classes as well. The trip will hopefully let people develop a stronger liking for Spain. “We’ll give them a list of tips of where to go. We will also have a bus which we will have the whole week.” From Les Ramblas in Barcelona, to the oldest wine-growing area of Spain in Priorat, to the centre of the harvest festivities in Rioja, to historical heritage sights in Ribera del Duero, to the exciting colourful markets in the thrilling city of Madrid, attendees can expect nothing but the best. Going forwards, Bart hopes they will plan a trip every two years. “I think they will
evolve into more cultural trips. Yes of course, the wine tasting is an integral part of the trip, but I think it’s really more about the total experience. They’re not hugely cheap, so we try and plan the trips for every other year.” The Andaman Wine club offers members exclusive wine tastings at least six times a year, a 10 per cent discount on wine purchases, and more. The trip is open to everyone, not just members. Bart Duykers, hailing from the Netherlands, is area director of BB&B and the Andaman Wine Club, and started organising regular wine tastings for his club members in 2008. In the past seven years the club has held close to 100 tastings, wine dinners, appreciation classes, and casual sampler tables. alking into Indigo Peark’s flagship restaurant, Rivet, there’s an air of attainable exclusivity. The décor is very-much industrial (given the name) with overtones of elegance and sophistication down to the music – factory chic with a pinky in the air. This place must certainly have been the setting of many wedding anniversaries and Valentine’s Day rendevous’. Sitting alongside Chris Oakes, Indigo Pearl GM, and Michiel Lugt, the resort’s Executive Assistant Manager, at a comfortable corner of the restaurant, aromas from the kitchen dance in the air. The resort was kicking off its “Rolling Visits by Rocking Chefs”, a series of visits by master chefs for the upcoming culinary tasting season. Chef Lynley Marston, a Brit with a cult following
in Bali where she is based, was the first to take over Rivet’s kitchen with the help of the resort’s Executive Sous Chef Fabio Crocetta. Up first was Brulée chicken liver parfait, dates, fig and apple chutney. Decadent is one way to describe it, as it overwhelms the tastebuds with its silky texture yet rich flavour. Spooning it onto the slices of bread that were served on the side, the Brulée was a delicious, high-end spread that went particularly well with the sweetness of the apple chutney. The four-course menu included the option to dine on tuna, orange, pine-nut carpaccio as an appetizer as well. And while the brulée won-out, it was one of the most colourful dishes that invited wandering eyes. After a dish of crab-meat ravioli that made me kiss my fingertips and say “prego”, it was on to the main course: Bœuf Bourguignon, roasted baby potatoes, wasabi aioli and sautéed green beans. Few things in this world can compete with well-cooked beef, and Marston’s bourguignon (a stew with braised meat) was a bowl full of French goodness. If anything, we were jealous of the spoon if only because it was covered in this tasty broth. Despite it’s name, this is a blue-collar dish with class and
the portions only serve to remind you of that. While many people covet the meat, the broth is just as, if not more, important since it can be used to enhance any side dishes like bread, rice, potatoes and green beans. And this broth could be served by itself with a few slices of bread, it’s that good. After all of the savoury dishes, we were ready for a sugary rush, and the chocolate gateau, poached fruit, and soft whipped cream were a welcomed site. Walking out of Rivet, rolling on my stomach, I couldn’t help but think of ways to make it up to Nai Thon for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Is there a private subway one could take that would lead to that same table? Have scientists been able to clone food yet? Both Chris and Michiel assured me that the “Rolling Visits by Rocking Chefs” series is only warming-up (pun intended) and more master chefs are on their way. Rivet is located at Indigo Pearl Phuket on Nai Yang Beach and National Park – Tambol Sakhu, 116 Moo 1 Thalang, 83110. They can be reached at Tel +66 (0) 76 327 006 or (0) 76 327 015. Coconut oil health hype
T
he popularity of coconut oil continues to increase among health-conscious Thais who have retained faith in its supposed ability to lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels as well as help people lose weight. The latest claims that coconut oil, also known as copra oil, can alleviate Alzheimer's disease and diminish signs of ageing have further sparked debate about the product. According to certified dietitian Patima Pornpojamarn, like many other products with convincing yet too-goodto-be-true properties, coconut oil can be considered just another health trend. Consumers strongly believe in the promoted advantages of it but the truth is that there is no clinically-proven evidence to back up the health claims. “I am not saying coconut oil is all bad and we should avoid using it altogether. But if you ask me now if the oil can do all that is claimed, I can only say there have so far been no medical studies or human trials to back up the hype,” said Patima. Coconut oil is a type of edible oil extracted from the meat of mature coconut. The popular type — coldpressed coconut oil — is manufactured in a heat-controlled environment and processed at a temperature of not over 70-80C. Such a production process ensures the properties in the oil are not
@thephuketnews
destroyed by too high a temperature. A number of people use coconut oil on the skin and hair as a type of moisturiser. Such use, according to Patima, causes no harm in most cases given coconut oil allergy is very rare. "It's the nature of not just coconut oil but also other types of oil that they can moisturise the skin," she said. "So if you use the oil to keep yourself free of dry skin, I think it definitely works." If consumers use coconut oil for cooking, they should be careful with food preparation. “Different types of oil tolerate different levels of temperature,” she added. “Olive oil, for instance, has a low smoke point [the temperature at which the oil stops shimmering and starts emitting smoke]. It is not suitable for any cooking method that involves a high temperature and is therefore widely used as a salad dressing. Likewise, coconut oil has a low smoke point and, as a result, should not be used for frying.” In recent years, coconut oil has been widely promoted for its weight loss properties. It is claimed that the oil contains medium-chain fatty acids which are easy to digest and metabolise, making people on a weight-loss mission believe that consuming the oil regularly will make them slimmer. Yet according to the nutritionist, such a belief has no medical evidence to support it. Worse, the claim is contrary to what is known among medical ex-
perts worldwide. “Speaking from a medical point of view, coconut oil contains over 90 per cent saturated fatty acids which are likely to raise blood cholesterol levels and increase the risk of contracting certain diseases,” she said. “Ideally, the recommended daily consumption of coconut oil should not exceed two to three tablespoons. Too much of it might cause a fatty liver.” Some have argued coconut oil, as well as several other oils, can fight diseases such as HIV and cancer. But further evidence-based medical studies are required. Those suffering from diabetes and kidney diseases should be extra cautious when it comes to coconut oil consumption. “Kidney disease patients already have difficulties purging excessive minerals,” Patima said. “Coconut oil contains a good amount of minerals, especially potassium. Consuming too much coconut oil will consequently require the body to work harder in trying to get rid of an excessive amount of minerals. Diabetes patients, on the other hand, are usually overweight. Too much coconut oil will simply make things worse for them.” Patima said that coconut oil remains
HEALTH 9
a subject of controversy among medical professionals. When it comes to good health, her key message is moderation. Consumers should take it with a pinch of salt when they hear people talk too much about certain health products or practices. After all, too much or too little of something is usually bad. “If you want to lose weight, do you think coconut oil alone can help?” she said. “There are several dimensions to weight loss: diet control, exercise and so forth. The same goes with good health. “It takes diversity and balance to ensure good health. Eat a wide variety of healthy food in an appropriate amount, regularly workout and have enough quality sleep at night. That's the smartest way to go.” Bangkok Post

Thailand’s most popular cars in 2014 WISE WHEELS Richard Jones richard@pixy.asia
Richard Jones is the Managing Director of BuyCar24 and can be contacted through www. buycar24.com.
W
e're in the midst of the entertainment awards season and it seems a fitting time to look back on the cars of 2014. Just like the Golden Globes or BAFTA's, the cars will be grouped into categories and compared like-for-like, but instead of a panel of judges we will be selecting the winners by the total number of car sales in Thailand between the beginning of January and end of December 2014. Without further ado, lets get on with it. First on stage are the B-Segment vehicles - small cars with an engine size of 1,300 to 1,500 cc. A close race with the Toyota Vios (47,800) just pipping the Honda City (44,444) as the top selling car in this category. The aging Honda Jazz comes a distant 3rd with
with only 16,533 sales. Next year expect to see the Mazda 2 break into the top three with the all new 2015 model recently released to rave reviews. In the C-Segment, cars with engine size of 1,600 to 2,000 cc, the winner is the same as previous years, the all dominant Toyota Altis with 36,593 vehicle sales last year, treble that of the second place Honda Civic (11,385) and the Mazda 3 (8,937). The luxury end of the car market partly defined by the D-Segment vehicles (engine size of 2,000 to 3,500 cc) sees the Honda Accord (8,744) just beating the Toyota Camry (6,847) to the finish with the Nissan Teana trailing in third with 3,752 sales. Eco Car manufacturing in Thailand is being heavily incentivised by the government and there's a clear winner for 2014, the all new Toyota Yaris sold 52,809 vehicles, that's more than the next five positions combined. To mention the others though, there's the Nissan Almera (15,680) and the previous year’s most popular, Suzuki Swift (13,340). Unsurprisingly in the land of the pickup truck, Thailand being the second biggest market in the world, the pickup truck segment accounts for more sales than any other category. The Toyota Hilux Vigo continues its domination (144,693 sales) despite being essentially a 10 year old design competing with much more modern vehicles. Isuzu's loyal following in Thailand sees its popular D-max pickup truck come in second with 128,496 sales followed
by the Mitsubushi Triton (33,105) in a distant third. In the SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) segment, a popular choice in Phuket, contributes only a small proportion of Thailand's overall vehicle sales. Leading the pack is Honda's tried and tested CR-V with 8,398 sales in 2014, followed by Mazda's new-to-Thailand CX-5 (5,634 sales) and finishing-off the podium is one of two non-Japanese vehicles to make our list, the Chevrolet Captiva (2,530). Another popular segment on the island is the PPV (Pickup-truck based Passenger Vehicle), perhaps unsurprisingly mirroring the results of the pickup trucks they are based upon, we see the Toyota Fortuner (20,156) narrowly beat the Isuzu MU-X (19,040) with Mitsubishi's Pajero Sport coming a distant third (6,394). The SubCompact SUV / Crossover segment was an interesting one to watch in 2014 with a slew of new and exciting vehicles in its ranks, the charismatic and bubbly Nissan Juke came out on top with 10,236 sales. In second place the Ford Ecosport with 6,289 sales proved a success for the company and is sure to pave the way for other miniaturised small-engined SUVs. Honda's new HR-V finishes off the top three with 3,764 sales. Lastly the Mini MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) segment sees the Japanese take all the top spots with the Toyota Avanza (4,181) leading the pack followed by both Honda's Freed (3,251) and Mobilio (3,101).

And the Oscar goes to...
T
here were a slew of interesting storylines surrounding the 87th Academy Awards, which took place in Los Angeles last Sunday (February 22). Here’s a round-up of some of the night’s biggest winners.
Best Director: from radio to the Oscars
Years after playing 1980s rock music as a popular radio DJ in Mexico, filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu was back behind a microphone on Sunday: To accept the Oscar for best director. Iñárritu – the creative force behind dark comedy Birdman – became the second Mexican in a row to win Hollywood’s top directing prize, one year after countryman Alfonso Cuarón was rewarded for space thriller Gravity. Birdman, starring Michael Keaton as a washed up superhero movie star attempting to revive his career on Broadway, marks a break from Iñárritu’s somber dramas. A music lover, Iñárritu started working for WFM radio in the 1980s while he was still a communications student at Mexico City’s Iberoamerican University before traveling the world as a cabin boy in a merchant vessel at the age of 19,
trading the microphone for a camera. Iñárritu left WFM in the 1990s to make TV ads and short films for his production firm, Z Films, while learning the craft from Polish theater director Ludwik Margules. It was during that time that he met screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga, with whom he made Amores Perros – a raw drama in which three stories collide after a car crash in Mexico’s sprawling capital. His debut feature earned Inarritu a big ovation at the Cannes film festival, where it won the Critics’ Week prize in 2000. “I think that I’m a musician before I am a film-maker – a frustrated musician,” Iñárritu once said, comparing his films to musical genres. Amores Perros, he said, is a rock song while the crime drama 21 Grams is jazz, Babel amounts to an opera and Biutiful is a requiem.
The film directed and produced by Laura Poitras reveals how she worked with other reporters to lift the lid on the sweeping surveillance programs of the US National Security Agency and other intelligence services – revelations which shocked many in America and around the world. Citizenfour revolves around a series of conversations with Snowden filmed in Hong Kong, where the onetime NSA contractor explains the powerful intelligence apparatus of the US government and its allies. It notably shows Snowden – who used the pseudonym Citizenfour when he first contacted Poitras – explaining these programs to her, Greenwald and Guardian journalist Ewen MacAskill. Poitras said earlier this month that “the motivation for the film was really to tell the story of what happened, what was the motivation and why (Snowden) took the risks that he took.”
“Well done Eddie, I’m very proud of you,” the wheelchair-bound academic, who suffers from motor neurone disease, said in a Facebook post. “Congratulations to Eddie Redmayne for winning an Oscar for playing me,” he said. When the film came out last year, Hawking said: “At times I thought it was me.” Redmayne, 33, dedicated his Oscar to people like Hawking suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and thanked the academic’s family. The film tells the love story between Hawking and his first wife Jane with whom he lived for 30 years and had three children. AFP

The best documentary Oscar awarded to Citizenfour is the latest in a string of accolades for the journalists who brought to light the trove of classified documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Online dating risks your cyber health, study finds
A
nalysis conducted by IBM Security found over 60 per cent of leading dating mobile apps are potentially vulnerable to a variety of cyber-attacks that put personal user information and corporate data at risk. The IBM study revealed that many of these dating apps have access to additional features on mobile devices such as the camera, microphone, storage, GPS location and mobile wallet billing information, which in combination with the vulnerabilities may make them vulnerable to hackers. Security researchers identified that 26 of the 41 dating apps they analysed on the Android mobile platform had either medium or high severity vulnerabilities. The analysis was based on apps available in the Google Play app store in October 2014. The vulnerabilities discovered by IBM Security make it possible for a hacker to gather valuable personal information about a user. While some apps have privacy measures in place, the study found many are vulnerable to attacks that could lead to the following scenarios: Dating apps used to download malware Users let their guard down when they anticipate receiving interest from a potential date. That’s just the sort of moment hackers thrive on. Some of the more vulnerable apps could be reprogrammed by hackers to send an alert that asks users to click for an update or to retrieve a message that, in reality, is actually just a ploy to download malware onto their device. GPS information used to track movements IBM found 73 per cent of the 41

P
popular dating apps analysed have access to current and past GPS location information. Hackers can capture a user’s current and past GPS location information to find out where a user lives, works or spends most of their time. Credit card numbers stolen from app Some 48 per cent of the 41 popular dating apps analysed have access to a user’s billing information saved on their device. Through poor coding, an attacker could gain access to billing information saved on the device’s mobile wallet through vulnerability in the dating app and steal the information to make unauthorised purchases. Remote control of a phone’s camera or microphone All the vulnerabilities identified can allow a hacker to gain access to a phone’s camera or microphone even if the user is not logged into the app. This means an attacker can spy and eavesdrop on users or tap into confidential business meetings.
While the study discovered a number of vulnerabilities in over 60 per cent of popular Android dating apps, consumers can take steps to protect themselves against potential threats. Don’t divulge too much personal information on these sites such as where you work, your birthday or social media profiles until you’re comfortable with the person you are engaging with via the app. Other measures include using using unique passwords for every online account you have, updating apps when they become available, and using trusted Wi-Fi connections when on the app. Bangkok Post
repaid mobile phone customers must register their personal information with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC), under a proposal approved by the cabinet last week. Deputy government spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said the cabinet had agreed in principle to NBTC’s scheme to order customers to register with the NBTC for security reasons. Customers are required to register within six months of the measure being approved, or they will no longer be able to use mobile services. The NBTC launched a registration programme under a national telecom regulator circular on February 1. So far, about 1.4 million users have registered. The cabinet also has agreed to let the NBTC track the telephone usage of prepaid customers if they fail to register, he said. Bangkok Post

Remembering rugby’s roots David Brook editor@classactmedia.co.th
While never winners, Scotland has competed in every Rugby World Cup since the inaugural tournament. Their best finish was fourth in 1991.

A
500 year-old sandstone cross in the village of Meridien is claimed to mark the very centre of England. Just a few miles away another plaque erected on the wall of the Rugby School in 1895 is claimed to mark the birth of the sport that bears its name, inspired by its pupil William Webb Ellis who famously picked up the ball in 1823. The name William Webb Ellis was to become indelibly enshrined in the history of Rugby. And this year once again his name will come to the forefront …it is Rugby World Cup Year and the leading teams of the World will be vying to capture the famed Webb Ellis Cup. But it was some years between the incident at Rugby School and the birth of the Rugby World Cup Tournament, and the path has not been without incident and issues. The style of football that developed at Rugby School became popular throughout the UK in the 1850s and 1860s. In 1871 the RFU was formed and the first recognised international rugby match was played between England and Scotland. In 1883 the first Home Nations Championship, contested by England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales was played while overseas and the Montevideo Cricket Club in 1861 became the first club to play rugby outside the British Islands. The waters were stormy. In 1892, the Northern Rugby Football Union was formed and the schism subsequently created “rugby league” and “rugby union”. The two codes
went their own way. In 1910 the Rugby Union Home Nations Championship became the Five Nations Championship when France joined but it was another 90 years, in 2000, before The Six Nations Championship was formed as Italy joined. But it was Rugby League who staged Rugby’s first ever World Cup in either code in 1954 when Great Britain beat France 1612 in the Paris final. The first Rugby Union World Cup was not played for until 1987, since then it has been lifted by four nations: New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and England. While never winners, Scotland has competed in every Rugby World Cup since the inaugural tournament. Their best finish was fourth in 1991 having been agonisingly eliminated by the runners up England but assisted by an inspirational performance by
a certain George “Doddie” Weir on his World Cup debut. The giant lock that had come quickly through the Scottish ranks was part of the Scottish school’s team in ‘87 and ‘88, before at the age of 19 becoming the youngest forward to play for Scotland B in 1989. He was soon promoted to the first team, winning his first cap against Argentina in 1990. A glittering career saw him win 61 caps in seven years (and scoring 19 points), take part in three consecutive World Cup tournaments (1991, 1995, 1999), captain the Barbarians, play for the Lions (1997), as well as playing for 17 years with Stewart’s Melville, Melrose, Newcastle Falcons and Borders before retiring in 2004. Webb Ellis name is firmly established in rugby union folklore…”Doddie” Weir’s is certainly enshrined in Scotland’s.

Laguna back on top in Phuket 40-Over League CRICKET Stuart Reading editor2@classactmedia.co.th
L
aguna claimed victory over a Thalang with an impressive 293-10 from 40.5 overs including a century from big-hitting Ali Khan (109 from 64 balls) to take the lead in the Phuket Cricket Group (PCG) 40-Over League match at the Alan Cooke Ground last Sunday (February 22). Thalang could only manage 168-10 in 38.1 overs in the loss as they sit in last place in the four-team league. Laguna chose to field first since they knew the key to victory was removing the opening pair of Andrew Macmillan and Justin Thomatos, who put on a record breaking partnership of 209 against them last year. Laguna struck in the 6th over removing Macmillan (10) with a catch by Stuart Reading. Just before the 10 over break,
@thephuketnews
Ali Khan of Laguna slugged his team towards victory with his strong performance in which he scored 109 runs off 64 balls, 7 fours, and 8 sixes. Photo: Michael Way. they also captured Simon Wetherell (3) which brought Carl Baxter (34) to the crease. The threat of Thomatos (34) remained, however this was quickly snuffed out when Sameer Khan clean bowled him on his first throw in the 16th over. Pao (11) and Baxter put on a stabilising 30-run partnership taking Thalang through
to the 20 over break. However, Pao was caught mid-wicket in the 22nd while Baxter fell in the 26th with the score on 118-5. Craig Murphy (35) and Gary Lane (14) then put on a valuable 40-run partnership before Murphy was caught in the 34th over. Laguna then captured the remaining four Thalang wickets for just 10
runs – Thalang being bowled out for 168 in 38.1 overs. Pick of the bowlers for Laguna were Iqbal Malik (3 for 27), Nadeem Youseff (3 for 39), Sameer Khan (2 for 30) and Arif Mushtaq (1 for 17). Laguna took a chance with the opening pair of Ali Khan (109 from 64 balls) and Nadeem Youseff (27) which paid dividends. The
steady Youseff worked the ball around, while Khan launched an assault. Youseff eventually fell in the 12th over with the score on 80. Manish Sadarangani (37) then combined with Khan to put on a further 104-run partnership to secure the first inning’s points. Spectators enjoyed the spectacle as Khan hit seven
4’s and eight 6’s (including three-in-a-row from one of Gary Lane’s overs) with balls being hit out of the ground as quickly as they were being retrieved. Khan eventually was dismissed in the 29th over with the score on 206-4. Laguna continued to score with Sameer Khan (40) and Roly Cooper (20) combining for a 34-run partnership, followed by Cooper and Aaron Reading (11) for a further 28-runs and taking their total for 293-10. Pick of the bowlers for Thalang were Gary Lane (4 for 65) and Simon Wetherell (2 for 8). Next Sunday (March 1) ICC will take on Patong, expected to be another cracker of a match at the Alan Cooke Ground – 10am start time. FOOTBALL
Socceroos World Cup hero Bresciano retires Australia midfielder Mark Bresciano on Wednesday announced his retirement from international football after 84 appearances over 15 years, including at three World Cups. The 35-year-old, who spent 12 years playing in Italy for clubs including Lazio and Parma, made his international debut during the 2001 Confederations Cup and ended his career by helping Australia win this year’s Asian Cup. He is best remembered as Australia’s goal-scorer in their 1-0 victory over Uruguay in 2005, which catapulted the country to the World Cup finals for the first time in 32 years. AFP

AFL-er to sign with NFL Australian Rugby League standout Jarryd Hayne could be taking his talents to the National Football League’s Detroit Lions, with reports saying he will sign with the US club this week. Reports said the 27-yearold Parramatta Eels playmaker will join the Lions as a running back and potentially a kick returner as well. Hayne,
who shared National Rugby League Player of the Year honours this season with Johnathan Thurston of the North Queensland Cowboys, said last October he would leave rugby league to pursue an NFL career. Hayne performed last December for scouts from about half the teams in the NFL and his hand-held 4.5-second clocking for the 40-yard dash would have placed him among the top 10 in the unofficial rankings at the recent NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Djokovic begins bid for 50th title Novak Djokovic returned to the tour after his historic triumph in Melbourne by beginning a bid for his 50th title with a surprisingly testing 6-4, 6-4 win over Canadian Vacek Pospisil. The world number one was twice within a point of going 2-4 down in the second set against an opponent, ranked world 63, who hit freely, motivated by the chance of troubling someone who last month became the first man of the open era to win the Australian Open five times. Djokovic also hopes to win his fifth title at the Dubai Open, which would put him just one behind Roger Federer’s record, and may ultimately benefit from the difficulties which Pospisil boldly imposed on him. English Premier League 2014 - 2015

Gomis fluke ends Man United’s unbeaten run FOOTBALL
B
afetimbi Gomis scored a fortuitous winner as Swansea City completed their first ever league double over Manchester United with a 2-1 home victory in the Premier League on Saturday (February 21). Having won 2-1 at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season, Swansea recovered from a goal down to repeat the dose at the Liberty Stadium. Gomis, who came into the game with only two Premier League goals to his name, was trying to get out of the way when Jonjo Shelvey took aim from 25 yards in the 73rd minute. But the French striker did not duck quickly enough and the ball took a feint touch off him that sent it flying over
the desperate lunge of United goalkeeper David de Gea. The strike condemned Louis van Gaal’s United to their first defeat in 20 matches in all competitions, enabling Arsenal to leapfrog them into third place with a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace. Ander Herrera gave the visitors a 28th-minute lead at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday, but Swansea equalised less than two minutes later through South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-yueng. The game was won 17 minutes from time when Bafetimbi Gomis inadvertently deflected “I would rather be lucky than good,” he said. “Yes, we had to ride some pressure, but even with the players they have, they only had one shot,” Gomi said after the match. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s had a day to forget on Saturday
(February 28) as their advantage a the Premier League summit was trimmed to five poitns by resurgent champions Manchester City. Chelser were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by lowly Bur nley after Ben Mee claimed an 81st minute eqauliser for the 18th-placed squad. Nemanja Matic, who scored Chelsea’s goal, had been sent off for lashing out at Ashley Barnes. While Mourinho seethed, City set about dismantling Newcastle 5-0 in a sparkling performance in which Edin Dzeko won a penalty inside 30 seconds after being clipped by Vurnon Anita and Sergio Aguero scored from the spot to put City ahead. Samir Nasri stretched City’s lead before Dzeko added a glorious third in the 21st minute.Silva got in on the act with a brilliant quickfire brace early in the second half and Wilfried Bony gave City’s fans further reason to cheer when he came on to make his debut. In other news, Arsenal capitalised on United’s slip-up with a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace that saw Arsene Wenger’s side climb to third place in the table. Santi Cazorla opened the scoring with an eighth-minute penalty after Pape Souare was adjudged to have fouled Danny Welbeck. Olivier Gi-
roud added a second on the stroke of half-time, following up after Julian Speroni had saved from Welbeck, before Glenn Murray tapped in a stoppage-time consolation for Palace. Liverpool survived three penalty appeals to boost their bid for a top-four finish in the Premier League with a contentious 2-0 win at Southampton on Sunday (February 22). Brendan Rodgers’ side moved up to sixth place, within two points of fourthplaced Manchester United, as goals from Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling secured their sixth win in their last seven matches in all competitions. But fifth-placed Southampton had reason to feel aggrieved after a trio of penalty claims were turned down in the first half, starting in the opening moments when Emre Can tugged at Filip Djuricic. Coutinho responded by lashing Liverpool into a thirdminute lead. Djuricic’s second penalty appeal came when he appeared to be fouled by Joe Allen, but again referee Kevin Friend ignored his appeals. Then Can handled in the penalty area as he tried to control before clearing a cross, yet once more Friend waved play on. AFP

Pakistan v. Zimbabwe
FIFA task force’s call on Tuesday (February 24) for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to be shortened and held in November-December met immediate condemnation from Europe’s major football powers. Football’s ruling body said the tournament had to be moved from the traditional summer months because of the scorching temperatures in Qatar. The group made a provisional recommendation for the 2022 tournament to start on November 26 and end December 23 in a move that risks the wrath of European football leagues and international broadcasters. England’s Premier League chief Peter Scudamore said he was “very disappointed” by the decision. Spanish, German and French officials also expressed opposition. A final decision will be made by the FIFA executive committee at a meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, on March
19–20. FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said the working group touched on “all the options”, including holding the World Cup in January and February 2023. A winter tournament would be 31 days, one shorter than the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. UEFA, Europe’s governing body, said it supported the idea of a winter tournament, while Europe’s top leagues and clubs, who fear a costly disruption to their domestic competitions, expressed immediate opposition.
T he English Premier League chief said Europe’s top clubs felt “let down” by UEFA who would see minimal impact on their Champions League. Frederic Thiriez, president of the French league and of the European Professional Football Leagues, called the recommendation “the worst solution.” “We are going to stop in November after 13 or 14 games and start again in January. In the meantime, players will not play, the clubs will not make any money, the fans will be
deprived of national competitions and television companies will be furious,” he said. The European leagues say that three quarters of the players at the last World Cup came from European leagues. FIFA ruled out holding the tournament in JanuaryFebruary because of a clash with the Winter Olympics Traditionally the World Cup is played in June and July, but summer temperatures in Qatar soar above 40 degrees Celsius. In November-December, the temperatures would be around 25 degrees Celsius. AFP
Hadlee rates Aussies favourites against Black Caps CRICKET LEGENDARY NEW ZEAland paceman Richard Hadlee believes Australia have a slight advantage going into Saturday’s (February 28) World Cup showdown because of their pair of power-hitters. This weekend’s clash in Auckland, which some believe could be a dress rehearsal for the March 29 final, pits fourtimes World Cup champions Australia against an in-form New Zealand. Hadlee, who still holds the record for most Test wickets by a New Zealand bowler with 431, believes Australia’s power hitters can take advantage of the short straight boundaries
at Eden Park. “They’ve got probably six power hitters in their side and with the short boundaries, it could be the contest of the power hitters,” Hadlee, 63, said. “I think Australia are favourites, but the way New
Zealand are playing, we will given them a good run and we are good enough to get across the line,” he said. Tomorrow’s match promises a fascinating duel between the Australian pair of Aaron Finch and David Warner and in-form New Zealand pacemen
Tim Southee and Trent Boult. Southee recorded New Zealand’s best one-day figures of seven for 33 in his team’s eight-wicket win over England in Wellington last week. They can also call-up skipper Brendon McCullum, who smashed the World Cup’s fastest fifty, off just 18 balls, en-route to a 25-ball 77 against England. “The way [McCullum] fields and leads his side in the field, and his batting ability as well – if he can put all three things together, the other players will follow that.” Besides Pool A supremacy, both teams will also be vying for the Chappell-Hadlee one-day trophy, named after the great Australian and New Zealand cricket families. Phuket FC garner one point in impressive home opener FOOTBALL Matt Pond editor3@classactmedia.co.th
A
crowd of about 4,200 fans had turned out to watch the Ronins in their first 2015 season game at Surakul Stadium and it was the Ronins who had the majority of possession throughout the game. Phuket showed a lot of character early in the first half with Berlin Ndebe-Nlome and Wasan Samansil creating some scoring chances but being unable to find the back of the net. Whereas the Pink Panthers didn̕ t seem to gel, even with a few corner kicks early on, but the shots they did have were all far off target. But Phuket̕ s efforts paid off when in the 23rd minute mid-fielder Patipat Armatantri made a surging run only to be pulled down in the box by a Panthers defender. The referee immediately pointed at the spot and Phuket captain Yusuke Sato calmly put the ball away giving the Ronins a well deserved 1 – 0 lead. The score remained at 1-0 at the half time whistle. being the introduction of the showboating Brazilians – Number 10, Ronir de Souza Gonçalves, known better as “Rodinho”, and speedy winger, no. 14, Andre Luiz Rodrigues Lopes, or “Zhino”
– who not only left the opposition standing in their tracks but brought delight to the home crowd with their fancy footwork. However, the introduction of the substitutes had no real impact on the game, and it was the visitors who had the last laugh, when in the 73rd minute Panthers striker Teerachai Thampien finally got a shot on target and slotted the ball past Phuket keeper bringing the score all square at 1-1. The score remained the same at the final whistle. It was an impressive performance from Phuket FC, and if they can continue to play in the same manner
throughout the season then things could look more positive than in previous seasons. With four points after two matches, the Ronins sit in 4th place of the 20-team Yamaha League-1 table. Four other teams also have four points – BBCU (2nd), Chiang Mai (3rd), Sukhothai (5th) and Police Utd (6th), while the only team to have won both of their opening matches is Ang Thong, who sit at the top following their 3-1 away win at Bangkok.

Jomhod, Phuketians bring the pain at Full Metal Dojo 4 MMA JP Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
WITH THE SAME FLAIR he showed in his 20s, 44-yearold Muay Thai legend Jomhod Kiatadisak was able to walk away victorious from his debut MMA fight at Full Metal Dojo 4 last Saturday (February 21) in Bangkok. The fight veteran managed to put away his opponent, revered Cambodian Khmer boxing specalist Vorn Viva, with a decision win following a tough 15 minutes. The Thai legend, who trained out of Phuket’s Tiger Muay Thai & MMA Training Camp in

second round pummelling the Cambodian as he sat on top of him. Both men cracked each other several times with vicious overhands and thumping kicks amongst screaming fans at Live House Studios. The promotion, organised by former Patong Boxing Stadium announcer Jon Nutt, put together a card of eight fights that included several Phuketbased fighters. Masood Ranjbar, a heavyweight Iranian fighter out of AKA Thailand in the Rawai/ Nai Harn area, won his debut bout against experienced Frenchman Yoann Gouaida (4-4) via decision. The Iranian managed to take down Gouaida seemingly at will
and managed to hurt his eye during the first round with vicious elbows from the top. The rest of the bout saw Masood take Gouaida down a few more times. Earlier in the night, Tiger Muay Thai fighter Michael Dubois (1-2) lost his bout against Dmitrijs Homjakovs (2-0) via TKO. The Frenchman started strong, landing a head kick – legal in the promotion – before he was hit with a knee and kicked in the final minute of the first round, prompting a referee stoppage. Meanwhile, Phuket Top Team-trained Andres Da Forno walked away with a TKO victory in the first round over Jason Archilla. thephuketnews
