OLICE are hunting at least four more suspects in Phuket for their parts in the Ufun investment scheme that has allegedly defrauded more than 120,000 Thais out of an estimated B38 billion. “Only one of the remaining four suspects in Phuket is a Phuket native,” said an investigator from the Consumer Protection Board (CPB)

Phuket office, who asked not to be named. “But all four are fugitives wanted on warrants.” Investigators managed to contact the Phuket native fugitive, who assured officers that he would surrender to police. “But he has yet to present himself,” the CPB investigator told The Phuket News. “We are looking for him now. We still think he is hiding in Phuket.” The investigator declined to name

the four fugitives, or specify how much money they are suspected of funnelling through the Ufun scheme. Ufun suspects Damrongsak Pitisuk, 38, and his wife Pornthicha, 37, both wanted on an arrest warrant issued on June 23 this year, surrendered at Chalong Police Station last Sunday (August 23), and were presented to the press the next day. “Both suspects received Achievement Awards for being excellent employees of Ufun at the Black Night

Tourism businesses such as hotels and resorts can take care of their guests and clients, and local people, before local officials can get to them,” Gov Nisit said on Monday (August 25). “Natural disasters can happen at any time on the island and have the potential to become more and more violent. The seminar covered basic knowledge about earthquakes and tsunamis, evacuation procedures and safety guidelines during emergencies. “I believe that this seminar will benefit many people, not just those in attendance today,” Gov Nisit said.

DDPM-Phuket chief Santhawat Reulerng added, “The more people who know what to do in an emergency, and know the evacuation procedures in case of an earthquake or tsunami, the less damage to life and other assets we will have to deal with after the disaster.”

he Director of the Highways Department Phuket office, Samak Lueduanghad, has ordered the contractor for Samkong Underpass to urgently make major road repairs to make the roads past the construction site safe. He has also criticised the contractor, Civil Engineering Co Ltd, and the government tender bidding process for failing to complete the project on time. “We have expanded the lanes [past the site] as much as we could to ease traffic congestion, but we have still run into many problems,” he said during an inspection of the site on Tuesday (August 25). “We were aware that when the project started that excavation of the land and the condition of the road surface would be issues we would have to deal with. What worries us the most now is the condition of the road, which must be improved for the sake of safety. We have to fix the damage to the road fast.” Mr Samak apologised for the project not being completed on time. “When the construction com-

The NRC and the DNP have now launched investigations into the operation of Moo Koh Surin Nation Park, Moo Koh Similan National Park, Moo Koh Lanta National Park and Ao Nang National Park. “Suspicion of defrauding the NRC and the DNP is a serious offence,” Mr Nipon said. “And we are investigating high-level officers involved,” he added. Mr Samak also flamed the selection process for the government contract to build the underpass. “Many construction companies are capable of getting the work done, but they did not bid for the project and government officials in charge of the hiring did not look for the best construction companies with the highest bid – but only focused on the qualified companies that had the lowest bids,” he said. “All over the country, big projects like this always face many problems. We feel sorry for residents and tourists that have to go through this because we have narrow roads and do not have alternative routes past this point. “We want this project completed as quickly as possible, but everything must be done in accordance with the agreement between us and the contractor. “Our apologies to everyone affected by this project. We have ordered the contractor to wrap up the project and open the underpass as soon as possible,” Mr Samak added.

Where can we buy film for photography in Phuket? QUESTIONS & ANSWERS The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

Question I used to be an avid photographer using real film, but these days I use my digital cameras as they are much easier to download. However, I still have my old cameras and I was wondering where in Phuket can I buy film so I can enjoy a couple of outings “old style” using my old film cameras. Do you know of any shops in Phuket that sell photography film? – David, Chalong

Answer Most of the leading photo shops or digital colour labs in Phuket still process photograph film. In Phuket Town, you can buy film from the Maxi Color Shop (Tel: 076221856) on Montri Rd and at the Phuket Digital Photo

Missing the old days? Photography film is still available in Phuket. Photo: heipei Lab (Tel: 076-214688) next to the Sengho Bookstore, also on Montri Rd. The Samkong Digital Photo Lab (Tel: 076-254719) on Yaowarat Rd also sells photography film. Kodak ISO 200 film is about 100-150 baht per 36-photo roll, and ISO 400 film costs about 220-250 baht per 36 roll. Please call first to make sure that the film that you need is in stock. And if you’re interested, slide film is still also available in Phuket. – Chawut Kruapanich, owner of Phuket Digital Color Lab on Montri Rd in Phuket Town.

The raid team, lead by Thalang District Office senior official Siripong Leeprasit and including Royal Thai Navy personnel, Thalang police officers and civil defense volunteers, took Danai Homhown, 36, into custody just after 11am. They also seized one shotgun and shells in the raid, executed on Koh Ngam, in Tambon Thepkrasattri, Thalang. “Danai was wanted by Thalang police for attempted murder and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition under a warrant issued on October 9, 2014,” said Mr Siripong. Phuket to host full-scale search and rescue exercise THE ROYAL THAI NAVY Third Area Command will host Thailand’s annual Search And Rescue Exercise (SAREX 2015) in Phuket this weekend (August 28-29) with a full-scale simulation using helicopters off Phuket’s Deep Sea Port. Now in its 35th year, the annual SAREX is used to train surface units, helicopters and aircraft from a variety of defence and rescue services in the search for and safe recovery of people from marine accidents. @thephuketnews

The exercise also aims to ensure clear lines of communication and clearly set boundaries of responsibility for all organizations that join search-and-rescue efforts in Thai waters. As Thailand is a member state of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Inter national Maritime Organization (IMO), the exercise must be held every year. Last year, SAREX 2014 was held in Hua Hin.

at least one more suspect is at large,” said Mr Siripong. Officials were alerted to Danai’s whereabouts after local residents filed formal complaints of a gunman firing warning shots and threatening to shoot any fishermen or any other per-

sons attempting to land on the island, Mr Siripong said. Officials today conducted searches of the house on Koh Ngam where Danai was staying and the surrounding area, including underwater fish pens, for drugs, as Danai was a known drugs offender,

said Thalang District Chief Veera Kerdsirimongkol. “Danai has been arrested many times for drugs. He was arrested on December 26, 2011 for possession of a Category 1 drug with intent to sell after he was found with 1,000 of pills of ya bah (methamphetamine),” he said. Danai had failed to present himself in court and was also wanted on a warrant for his arrest on that drug charge, explained Mr Siripong. “We believe that Danai was living on Koh Ngam so he could smuggle and sell drugs again,” said Mr Veera. Adding to his woes, Danai stands accused of encroaching on national forest land on Koh Ngam, which covers more than 200 rai. “He built a house and had been living here for a long time, and now the area is under investigation by the Forest Department,” Mr Veera said.

Ace Condo case to be filed in court in 10 days Saroj Kueprasertkij

P

eople who bought units for the Ace 1 Condominium project in Patong and have yet to file complaints with the police have been given a further 10 days to do so before the case is filed in court it was announced on Monday (August 24). The announcement came at at press conference held at the Governorʼs House by Col Angkul Klaikueng of Royal Thai Police Consumer Protection Division and Amphol Wongsiri Secretary-general to the Office of the Consumer Protection Board. Construction of the 196-unit Ace 1 Condominium project, on Sai Nam Yen Rd, was scheduled to begin in February 2013 with completion in April 2015. According to an officer of project because of an internal dispute within the development company, nothing has been built. Speaking at the press conference on Monday, Col Angkul said, “The main reason that it has taken us so long to bring this case to court is because we have been waiting for more complaints to be reported to the police. “More than 160 units have been

“We would like to use this case as a case study for property fraud in Thailand, and it will be discussed at a meeting which will be held in Bangkok tomorrow (August 25). Then on Thursday (August 27), we will hold another meeting to find the best solution for resolving these problems,” Mr Amphol added. Didier Giesen a Belgian businessman who paid about B1,144,000 for two units at Ace Condominium said, “I like this country very much and I want to stay here for as long as I can, but I feel very upset about what has happened. I don’t know how many more case like this they have here or how they will handle it.”

Paul Schmier, 64, from Sydney, Australia who paid about B1,197,000 for a unit in January 2014 said, “I wanted to retire here in beautiful Phuket, but I do not know now. This issue will give Thailand a very bad image.” When asked by the complainants when the case would actually be passed to the court, Col Angkul said that if it is not necessary to wait for more complaints to be filed then it can be passed on very soon. “I think we already have enough evidence to take it to court. However, the reason we were waiting for more complaints purely for court hearing reasons. But letʼs say now that we will give it 10 more days. September 3, 2015 is D-Day,” Col Angkul said. When asked if those who had not filed complaints with the police would receive their money back, Col Chaiwat Ui-Kam from Patong Police said that everyone who had put money into the Ace Condominium project would get their money back. “Of course everyone will get there settlement if the court orders that it be paid. However, sooner or later they will have to bring themselves and their evidence to the police to claim their money,” Col Chaiwat said.

The fire started in one shop and quickly engulfed nine other stores.

Shops gutted in market blaze

POLICE SUSPECT A SHORT circuit started a fire that gutted 10 stores at the Karon Plaza market, on the Karon beach road, just before midnight on August 19. No injuries were reported. Five fire trucks were called to the scene at 11:50pm, with firemen taking 40 minutes to extinguish the blaze. “The fire started in one shop and quickly spread to neighbouring stalls,” said Lt Weerayut Thansirisuk khaworrakul of the Karon police. One resident told police that he reported the fire after noticing flames bellowing out from the market as he drove past. “I saw thick smoke coming out of one shop, then the fire quickly consuming the stall next door, so he I quickly called the police,” he said. Officers have yet to determine the cause of the blaze, but suspect the fire was started by a short circuit. Darawan Naknakhon

Officials order construction of workers’ camp to a halt R ESI DEN TS OF T H E Phuket Park housing complex in Srisoonthorn met with key local government officials last week to discuss finding a solution to an ongoing issue regarding a new migrant labour camp being constructed close to the complex. The residents initially filed a complaint with the Damrongtham Centre on July 1 requesting officials put a stop to the construction of the camp. They were advised that officials would be sent to investigate and construction would be stopped if it was found it would bring potential harm and destruction to the area. However, work on the site never stopped. Speaking to The Phuket News after the meeting on August 20, Phuket Park resident, Yutthana Duangsuwan, said, “We have made some progress today. It has been agreed that construction of the camp should stop whilst a committee is set up to find the best solution for the issue. “The local authority will also take a public referendum

Residents and local government officials inspect the site where construction of the worker’s camp has been ongoing despite being ordered to stop. to seek out what is best for the community. Personally, I would like to see this case as an example to other communities as well.” Mr Yutthana also said he believed that it is not only Phuket Park residents who have problems with influential land owners or wealthy construction companies who set up some migrant labour camps on their own land without localʼs agreements. “The owner of the five rai plot of land where the camp is being built is both influential

and wealthy. They do not care about the local authority or locals who have lived in the area for very long time,” he said. “Many migrant worker camps bring a lot of pollution to the community and we do not want our kids to grow up in that kind of environment. We hope this time the authority will take their order more seriously than last time and the developers stop and wait for the best solution,” Mr Yutthana added. Saroj Kueprasertkij thephuketnews

Blast waves reach Phuket

E

ditors at The Phuket News deliberated long and hard over a headline following the Erawan bomb blast in Bangkok on August 17, regarding how Phuket would be affected by the blast in terms of tourism. In the end, The Phuket News chose to highlight how the island’s tourism industry had yet to feel the brunt of the fallout in tourist booking cancellations in the aftermath of the blast. Some people commented on our Facebook page that we had done so, in their opinion, in “bad taste”. Had we gone another way with a headline pointing out that tourism experts had indicated that Phuket could benefit from tourists redirecting their tours directly to Phuket instead of the capital, it’s highly possible that far more people would have scorned The Phuket News as

in even more “bad taste”. However, an article recently published by the Bangkok Post completely supports what that other headline could have been: that the bomb blast has in fact had no impact on Phuket’s tourism industry, and that the island is actually starting to benefit from it. Yes, the blast at the popular tourist attraction that killed 20 people and injured over 100, and for which nobody has yet been found accountable or claimed responsibility, was a disgusting act. Nobody yet knows why the persons chose this site as their target. In fact, nobody knows why Bangkok was the chosen target, and it’s possible that this will not come to light for some time. One theory for the bombings was that it was carried out to damage the Kingdom’s tourism industry, and yes, it is now

starting to have an effect with the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) reporting that 5 per cent of foreign bookings for travel to Thailand have been cancelled since the explosion. However, Phuket’s tourism remains unaffected, with the president of the Thai Hotels Association (Southern Chapter) stating citing Phuket’s occupancy rate in August at 85-90pc – amazing seeing that it is low season and many people say that the island is even more deserted than usual for this time of year. The Phuket News’ latest poll is asking whether you still feel safe in Phuket as a result of the August 17 blast. To have your say, visit thephuketnews.com and in the top news navigation drop-down menu, choose “Poll”. The Phuket News looks forward to seeing the results of this poll.

HAVE YOUR SAY An epic waste of tax money Re: Phuket sidestreets to lighten Chalong underpass traffic load Is it April 1? I have never heard of such a calamitous joke if so. So the horrific queues at times going North from Rawai using 2 lanes will now only have 1 lane, but hold on. The traffic coming South on the bypass road will be turning right to get to Kata. How? 2 sets of traffic lights to harass Northbound traffic. Why not use professionals to design the scheme and alleviate years of misery for the residents. Marcher This is the most ridiculous project I have ever seen. All this money spent and inconvenience just to add two lanes. One small accident and the entire tunnel is closed both ways. How do emergency services get access. Someone has to stop this waste of taxpayers money. Change it to an overpass now before it’s to late. Confused Kevin

Officials, Lifeguards need to do more to save lives

Re: Phuket lifeguard chief blasts tour operators, hotels over tourist drownings Like all other government contracts, most of the funds are put in private pockets while just enough remains to hire a few kids to wear red shorts and yellow shirts while they sit around the tower smoking, playing with their phones, eating, and grab-arsing with friends. I have heard that some paid lifeguards actually never show up, but have jobs doing other things like illegal rentals and commercial activities on the beach (maybe jetskis?). Mr Prathaiyuth says “If tourists realised how dangerous it is, they would be more careful with their own lives.” Ummm, hello... many of these people [tourists] have never, or rarely ever been to a beach. It is your job [officials and lifeguards] to let tourists know and to take pre-emptive action... not just stick red f lags all over then go back and have

a smoke with your buddies. While there are some very good lifeguards, the majority are utterly unprofessional, under-trained, and probably incapable of saving their own life let alone someone in distress. Richard Vickers

Re: Phuket tourism cited as key reason for national tourism overhaul A terrific story. Finally, it’s

being acknowledged that while Thailand offers great opportunities for tourists, the authorities don’t seem to possess the knowledge to promote and pursue those opportunities. Sommai: Graft still rife BANGKOK

ormer finance minister Sommai Phasee has warned the new economic team that corruption among state officials remains endemic and needs to be seriously addressed. Mr Sommai said the main reason he decided to join Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s government was because he agreed with its sincere intention of tackling graft and tax reform. “After nearly one year in government, what I could see was further problems in the public sector instead of issues being seriously addressed,” he said. “I realised that it can’t take just one or two ministers to do it but needs the whole cabinet in collaboration. “During my term, no matter how hard we tried to clean the ‘grey’ area, instead of being whiter, there have been more new ‘colours’ in the public sector because Thailand’s graft issue has been deeply rooted in the country.” To make headway will require the close cooperation of the entire cabinet, he said. Even an elected government that could finish its four-year term would struggle to eliminate corruption, as the issue requires a much

Corrupt officials tend to focus on sectors with huge yearly budgets such as the energy industry, highway construction and other infrastructure. “These can be called the basic industries that are major targets of those corrupt state officials and ministers,” Mr Sommai said. “If we take the issue seriously and want to make efficient moves, we should begin with their targeted areas first. “We have to take it [graft issue]

seriously. The current policymakers have tried to be stricter, but so far they are quite lax.” In his brief time as finance minister, the first issue he addressed was fraudulent value-added tax claims that were costing the country billions of baht. “We axed two high-ranking officials after we found evidence of their involvement in fraud,” Mr Sommai said. Graft extended even to state banks: “We found cases of state

Allegations arose that Soeng Sang School deputy director Isoonpiyathorn Juthatham in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Ban Bua Luang district slapped the head of a Matthayom 5 student in front of other students. The findings were disclosed on Tuesday (August 25) by Chukiet Viset-sena, director of the Office of the Nakhon Ratchasima Secondary Education Area 31, who set up a panel shortly after a video went viral last Friday (August 21) showing the incident. Mr Chukiet said the committee, comprising staff from his office and the Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) questioned students and Soeng Sang School teachers who witnessed the incident. It found the deputy director guilty of using excessive force. “Mr Isoonpiyathorn has violated the first rule of the Teacher Professional Devel@thephuketnews

officials involved in corruption at almost every bank.” He urged the new minister to continue the mission of attacking fraud at state-backed financial institutions. The last task Mr Sommai undertook before leaving the cabinet was signing documents concerning evidence that showed how state bank officials were deep in corruption during the past seven years. Those documents have been submitted to the National Anti-

Corruption Commission. Mr Sommai also mentioned the contentious land and buildings tax, which he insists is essential to the goal of eliminating disparity and unfairness in the tax system. “In fact, the National Council for Peace and Order regarded the land and buildings tax as a key agenda item,” he said. “When Gen Prayut told me to stop, actually he asked me to stop talking about the issue with the press, but the premier did not want to shelve the tax. “If he had asked me to give up this tax, I would have quit sooner. I wouldn’t have stayed until now.” Government income accounts for 18-19 per cent of GDP, compared with 30-50pc in the US, Japan and developed countries in Europe. “The country has earned too little income for spending on essential development,” Mr Sommai said. “It is not a time when we can enjoy export income as a major force of economic development, given the slowing global economy.” He wants the new ministers to pursue an overhaul of the tax system and plug loopholes used for tax evasion. “Law enforcement must be done transparently and strictly,” he said. “If you have to put someone in jail, you have to do it if you want to clean things up.” Bangkok Post

Cabbie: Bomber ‘a foreigner’ BANGKOK

A

44-year-old male taxi driver who drove the Erawan shrine bomb suspect on August 17 has told police the yellow-shirted suspect was a “foreigner”, an informed source said on Tuesday (August 25). The taxi driver, whose name was withheld for safety reasons, told police the passenger, whom police have identified as the suspected bomber, was a foreign man in his 30s who was about 180 centimetres tall with wavy hair. The passenger was wearing glasses with a back frame, armbands, shorts and a pair of canvas shoes with black and red stripes, the taxi driver was quoted by the source as telling police investigators during three hours of questioning late on Monday evening (August 24). The driver also told police he suspected the passenger wanted to hide his tattoos with the armbands, said the source. The taxi driver said he picked the suspect up at Charn Issara Tower I on Rama IV Road at between 4pm to 5pm that day. The passenger said “Hua Lamphong” in a foreign accent. As they neared the station, the

suspect might have swapped his backpack for the black one and got the light-coloured bag before he hailed a tuk-tuk to Ratchaprasong intersection to set the bomb, said the source. Police investigators have also inspected the taxi and collected samples for DNA testing, the source added. Another source, meanwhile, said a team of investigators from the Metropolitan Police Bureau and the Crime Suppression Division that has been checking the mobile phone usage of people before and after the shrine bombing was now focusing on three international numbers. The team was determining who owned the numbers and whether they were connected with the bomb suspect who was seen lifting up his mobile phone as if making a call at the shrine, the source said. Anthony Davis, a veteran security analyst with IHS-Jane’s, made a persuasive case on Monday on a panel at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand that the right-wing Turkish militant group, the Grey Wolves, was behind the Erawan blast. He said some of the strongest evidence in favour of the ultranationalist Grey Wolves theory was the fury throughout Turkey that followed the Thai repatriation to China on July 9 of 109 Uighurs and the Grey Wolves’ visibility during the attacks on the Thai embassy in Istanbul. However, the police spokesman said they have so far found no evidence that the Erawan blast was linked to any international terrorist groups, insisting the bomber could have been a foreigner or a Thai who looks like a foreigner. “We can’t call an attack on one country by a foreigner international terrorism,” Pol Lt Gen Prawut Thavornsiri said. Pol Lt Col Banyin charged in Chuwong shares case BANGKOK FORMER DEPUTY COMMERCE minister Banyin Tangpakorn insisted his innocence when he turned himself in to police on Tuesday (August 25) to hear charges of theft of shares held by the late billionaire contractor Chuwong Sae Tang. He also threatened to sue the investigators for “dereliction of duty”. Pol Lt Col Banyin reported to investigators at the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) after arrest warrants were issued for him and three women on Monday for the alleged theft of hundreds of millions of baht in shares from Chuwong.

In a press interview before meeting the police, Pol Lt Col Banyin accused CSD investigators

of unfairly rushing the investigation and questioning only witnesses they had chosen. He said none of his witnesses had been called in for questioning. He said he was considering filing a police complaint against the case investigators for dereliction of duty in violation of Section 157 of the Criminal Code, for alleged unfair investigation. Pol Lt Col Banyin showed reporters several pens, each with an ink eraser on the end, and claimed his friend Chuwong regularly used this type of pen when writing on transactional documents. He claimed that when Chuwong allegedly wrote “pledge” on the share transaction documents with such a pen, and later changed it

to “transfer”, only he and Chuwong were present, so no one else knew about it. He later gave the pens to the investigators. Police earlier said the original content on the share transfers documents obtained from two stock brokerage firms which handled share trading for Chuwong had been erased and rewritten with different pens. Pol Lt Col Banyin also claimed the share transfers had been made from June 8 to June 26, the day he died, and that Chuwong could have alerted someone if the transfers had been made without his consent. “Why did he play golf with me if I had doctored his share transfer documents,” he asked. trial was a bitter blow to ma ny who su r v ived t he regime, which killed up to two million people by starvation, overwork or outright execution. She had been held under judicial supervision from the suspension of her trial until her death, and the charges against her were never dropped. “People still respect and love her,” said Sok Nguon, 65, a former Khmer Rouge fighter attending the funeral. “We came to see her off for the final time. I pray for her to be freed from any sins.” Ieng Thirith, the sisterin-law of late Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot, served as the

regime’s social affairs minister alongside her husband, then-foreign minister Ieng Sary. The couple, along with Pol Pot and his wife Khieu Ponnary, became the ideological centre of an ultra-Maoist movement that unleashed unprecedented destruction in the late 1970s. Ieng Sary, with whom she had four children, died in 2013 aged 87 before a verdict was delivered in his trial. Her death dismayed some victims of a regime which between 1975-79 wiped out nearly a quarter of Cambodia’s population in an attempt to create a communist agrarian utopia. AFP

HUNDREDS OF FORMER Khmer Rouge cadres Monday (August 24) attended the funeral of the one-time “first lady” of the murderous Cambodian regime, but victims expressed sadness she would now escape justice. Between 200-300 people attended religious rites and prayers for Ieng Thirith, who was charged but never fully prosecuted for crimes against humanity by a UN-backed tribunal. She died last Saturday (August 22) aged 83. Her trial in 2012 for genocide and crimes against humanity was suspended due to ill health. The body was cremated late Monday in Pailin, a former Khmer Rouge stronghold on the Thai border where many regime leaders settled after they were ousted by a Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia in 1979. Ieng Thirith was among only a handful of people ever brought to court over atrocities during the Khmer Rouge era. The suspension of her

The agreement will be welcomed by neighbouring countries like China and Japan, which had viewed the stand-off on the Korean peninsula with growing concern and urged both sides to show calm and restraint. It will also be viewed with some relief by the United States, which has nearly 30,000 US troops permanently stationed in South Korea and had repeatedly reiterated its commitment to the defence of its key Asian ally. “As with all such agreements, the devil is in the details,” said Yang Moo-Jin, a professor at the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul. “But it clearly represents a turnaround for the current crisis and shifts the pendulum towards dialogue,” Mr Yang said. In a joint accord, the North “expressed regret” over recent mine blasts that maimed two South Korean soldiers, while the South agreed to switch off loudspeakers blasting propaganda messages across the border. The speakers would be silenced at midday (3am GMT) Tuesday, at which time the North will lift a “semi-war state” declared last week by leader Kim Jong-Un. The two also agreed to work towards a resumption next month of reunions for families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War, and to hold official talks in either Seoul or Pyongyang at a date to be decided. The agreement, which appeared to cover the major areas of contention, came after days and nights of negotiations which began early last Saturday evening (August 22) in the border truce village of Panmunjom.

Mr Kim described North Korea’s expression of regret for the mine blasts as “very meaningful” and said securing it had taken up most of the time in his negotiations with his North Korean counterpart Hwang Pyong-So – a close confidant of leader Kim Jong-Un. “We had to get a word of apology that has the North as the main agent,” Mr Kim said. Pyongyang has repeatedly denied any responsibility for the mine blasts, and Monday’s accord avoided any explicit acceptance of responsibility. But analysts said it came far closer than they had expected. “Past inter-Korea agreements at a time like this have tended to be South Korean soldiers ride in a military truck in Paju as it travels along extremely ambiguous,” said Jeung Young-Tae, an analyst at the Korea a road leading to the truce village of Panmunjom. Thriving ‘brothel’ cabarets

Illegal prostitution in a breakaway Cyprus statelet CYPRUS

A

white stretch limousine pulls up outside a northern Nicosia hospital to drop off cabaret girls for their monthly HIV test, in a breakaway statelet where officially prostitution is illegal. Clubs with names such as Sexy Lady, Harem and Lipstick leave little to the imagination, with 50 of them in the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), where tens of thousands of troops from Turkey are stationed in camps on the divided island. Hundreds of young foreign women work and live on the premises, on the basis of “konsomatris” (“hostess” in Turkish) visas. Although the women are legally obliged to have monthly HIV tests, Turkish Cypriot authorities do not acknowledge they are prostitutes or victims of sex trafficking. Official figures show 1,168 such visas were issued between April 2014 and January 2015, half to Moldovans and the rest to Moroccans, Ukrainians and women from central Asian countries. As the women await their blood tests, the hospital ward is filled with Arabic and Slavic conversation, but their minders discourage talk with outsiders. According to local newspapers, a foreign woman in June tried to escape from a fourth floor hospital window and broke a leg. She had reportedly expected to be working as a waitress and panicked when she realised her job was to sell sex. “I’ve been here a month,” a

Photo:Florian Choblet/AFP Moroccan in heavy makeup said in a hushed tone as she waited for a check at a police station, the next stop after the hospital. “The police have got my passport,” she added before a gingerhaired man in his 50s with a pockmarked face told her to keep quiet. Police say they keep the passports “for their security”, but the lucrative cabaret business in northern Cyprus, under international embargo since a Turkish invasion, has its critics. “These nightclubs are brothels. Women are used as sex slaves. Everybody knows it and nobody does anything,” said Dogus Derya, a member of the TRNC parliament. “Often the girls do not get a salary. They get a portion of what they made, but sometimes only half of what was promised to make sure they come back for the rest,” she said. “They pay for their own shoes, underwear, medicine. And they are asked up to $150 (B5,326) a week

for their accommodation at the nightclub,” said the feminist MP. “It’s easy to do human trafficking here.” Under pressure from the European Court of Human Rights, the local parliament in January 2014 approved a series of amendments outlawing human trafficking for sex. The offence can carry a sevenyear jail sentence. A telephone helpline, 157, has been launched, but Mine Atli, a lawyer and member of an “Association of Women to Support Life”, said victims were “afraid to call because the helpline is linked to the authorities”. Past experience has served as a deterrent for women to complain. “A number of women escaped and went to the police. The police charged both the woman [with prostitution] and the pimp,” Atli said. She said such cases “end up in an agreement in court: the woman

pulls back her complaint in exchange for the prosecution to drop the charges against her… The status quo remains.” Cabaret owners are a powerful lobby in a statelet dependent on alternative sources of revenues such as nightclubs and casinos, a magnet for tourists from Turkey where casinos are banned. The TRNC’s interior minister, Aziz Gurpinar, said the cabarets pay around 7.5 million Turkish liras in annual taxes ($2.5 million) and insisted that measures were being taken to prevent exploitation of the women. “A brochure was prepared which contains information on the legal rights of the hostesses upon entry to the country and emergency phone numbers they can call if needed,” he said. “The risk of exploitation due to the laws and regulations on hostesses has been prevented.”

The Greek Cypriot-run south of the island, an EU member since 2004, abolished “artistes” visas four years later under a barrage of US and European accusations of women trafficking. The republic of Cyprus remains on a US trafficking watch list. The State Department charges the TRNC “continues to be a zone of impunity for human trafficking”, with a growing number of foreign women forced into prostitution without any official intervention. The flip side of the TRNC’s lack of international recognition is that it has not signed any international conventions, nor does it have to abide by them. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops occupied its northern third in response to an Athens-inspired coup seeking union with Greece. Only Ankara recognises the TRNC, self-declared in November 1983. Emine Colak, its foreign minister, was candid in a conversation in her law office. “The situation would improve greatly if there was a solution as international treaties could then be used to leverage pressure on authorities,” she said. “With international recognition comes international pressures,” said Colak, who is also running a human rights foundation. After decades of failed international initiatives, a new round of U N-brokered reunif ication talks between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders was launched in May. AFP

Phuket tourism industry spurs national overhaul Bangkok Post

T

he tourism industries in Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga have been cited as key examples for the need to overall of the entire governmental approach to handling national tourism issues. “Communities and organisations are disappointed with tourism development because tourist destinations are deteriorating or have deteriorated due to poor management,” said Kongkrit Hiranyakit, President of the Tourism Reform Subcommittee (TRSC). Moreover, benefits do not go to local communities but to investors and business people. Krabi and Phang Nga provinces provide good examples, he said. Phuket boasts many marine tourist destinations, but the lion’s share of tourism revenue goes to investors rather than local residents. If this situation continues, tourism will surely face problems, he explained.

Among Thailand’s 77 provinces, 85 per cent of Thai and foreign tourists visit only 10 – Ayutthaya, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi, Krabi, Phang Nga, Phuket, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Songkhla and Surat Thani. The National Refor m Council recently approved the shift to integrate five tourismrelated agencies under the

aegis of the National Tourism Policy Committee. The TRSC, which worked on the initiative, believes reform is essential to maintain competitiveness and local residents’ confidence, as the sharp growth in visitor numbers has created a host of problems for local communities. This year, the World Tourism Organization ranked the overall competitiveness of Thai tourism at 35th among 140 countries and territories

Entrepreneurs forge ahead A SURVEY BY BNOW.ORG, organiser of the Entrepreneur Now Awards (ENA), which is accepting nominations until September 30, has revealed the key forces driving entrepreneurism in the Thai market. The survey questions were co-developed by BNOW.org and YouGov, a mobile and online focused market research agency team. The research was carried out online and on mobile phones with 1,000 respondents based in Thailand during June 2015. More than 57 per cent of the respondents said they started their own business to build a more secure financial future. Others said they wanted to take their future into their own hands and become their own bosses, while the

BNOW.org founder Pacharee Pantoomano-Pfirsch highlights the challenges. remaining respondents cited job security, the desire to have flexibility in work and family and to create a legacy. Qualities that the respondents considered to be most important for entrepreneurial leadership are passion and innovation. This was followed integrity and vision, risk-taking and team spirit.

With the growth of e-commerce (29pc of the respondents have an online store), the barriers towards starting business has declined over time, giving people the opportunity to start their business small, and build it up over time. However, respondents also identified fast-changing consumer preferences and habits, business laws and regulations, and lack of capable and skilled staff and specialists as the key challenges for startups. BNOW.org is welcoming nominations and submissions from Thais and non-Thais for the Entrepreneur Now Awards (ENA) 2015. Its environmental sustainability ranked 116th and land transport services 71st. “The competitiveness of Thai tourism is on the decline and it’s the right time

for an overhaul, especially increasing product and marketing efficiency and dealing with fierce competition,” Mr Kongkrit said. Chief among the major problems facing Thai tourism are an insufficient number of tourist destinations, while the existing ones are deteriorating, and transportation to and within destinations is not good. Moreover, facilities and services for tourists are substandard due to the heavy price competition, and tourism personnel lack foreignlanguage skills. Mr Kongkrit said topics related to the upgrading of tourist destinations and expanding to tap quality markets had been discussed for a long time, but the goal had been never accomplished – mainly because concerned parties focus on the number of visitors and tourism income rather than the quality of the tourism industry and the distribution of tourism income to communities that own tourist destinations.

Learning the essentials Expats, locals come together in camp to help Rawai kids learn life lessons Dalia Hilmi editor1@classactmedia.co.th

F

riday August 14, saw a number of local kids from the Wat Sawang Arom Temple & School in Rawai settle themselves in for what was to be a three-day Buddhist learning camp, designed to teach the kids the key values in life, based on core Buddhist philosophies. The Phuket News went down on the first day to find out more from the Mushy Peas – the Rawai-based Phuket FC supporters club made up of mostly expats. The day began with a presentation of 320 white Tshirts for each of the children, ready for them to wear throughout the entire weekend. The Mayor of Rawai, as well as the village headman were both present. Richie Dell of the Mushy Peas explained that this month they raised B24,000 in order to purchase and donate the 320 T-shirts to the children. He said, “The Buddhist learning camp retreat is aimed at helping the children learn lifelong values. “This weekend is all about the kids learning about Buddhist values. If we can play a little part in making the kids more rounded and learn about their own culture, then we’re happy.”

The Mushy Peas is made up of 20-30 expats who all donate around B1,000 each a month, which is put towards longterm and short-term projects and causes to help out the community. They choose to help out the community in Rawai, mainly because that’s where they all live. “It’s nice to know that we’ve made an impact and help the kids learn values that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. “A lot of the kids’ parents don’t even have the money to give them food money for school. So to be able to help them in any way possible makes us happy,” said Richie. “We’ve been looking at a new project to work on since the completion of the multi-purpose sports hall a few months ago, which was a large project totalling B500,000. So for the last couple of months we’ve been paying that off. “So, we asked the school if they had any causes and this month’s cause was the Buddhist retreat for the kids.” he added. Kru Pranee and Kru Prapa, the school’s headteachers, said, “The monks are helping to teach the kids the important stuff, while the activities set up, such as mediation, will help teach the kids key life lessons in a peaceful and relaxing manner. We believe it’s important the kids learn how to be a good Buddhist, and a better person in general. “There are lots of bad things going on

in Thailand today, so it’s good to teach the kids what’s right and wrong early. “They will learn about the community as well as personal-self worth values. The monks are giving them the tools to be a good Buddhist,” Richie said before Khun Prapee added with a smile, “and how to be a good student for the teacher.” The general feel of the day was really positive and it was clear how important it was for the school to help shape these kids into well-rounded strong, kind individuals. They’re fundamental belief was how to help these children deal with daily problems and issues, how to relax, and deal with life. “If the kids have a strong mind, they will have a strong body. We want to take care of the children,” Khun Pranee concluded. The Mushy Peas have made it a point to help several Rawai-based causes and have already donated thousands of baht worth of sports equipment to the local sea gypsy village, helped organise football clinics for disadvantaged Myanmar children, and donated football boots and school uniforms to several children. For more information or if anyone would like to volunteer and speak English to the kids in late September after the school exams, please visit https://www.facebook. com/pages/FC-Phuket-Rawai-Supporters-Club/203652029664003

The perfect roast

DINING 17

Indulge in Hock Hoe Lee’s historic coffee Dalia Hilmi editor1@classactmedia.co.th

F

or many expats, sitting down with a cup of coffee is a favourite pastime. And there are only a select few idyllic locations where the coffee is brewed and served right. One such place, Hock Hoe Lee is a laid back and cosy café, originally founded in Phuket Town in 1958 by a Cheng Long, a Chinese immigrant who would later take the Thai surname, Tanpacharapisuit. Now with a new branch in Rawai, the shop has succeeded in ways the owner would have never thought possible. The business is now run by the third generation of the family, and now focuses purely on coffee. The Phuket News headed over to the café to find out more from shop manager Ruengrit “Oh” Petchvorakul, who is married to Jutamas “Jaea” Tanpacharapisuit, the granddaughter of Cheng Long.

Ruengrit ‘Oh’ Petchvorakul.

The café started serving cold brew coffee, and to their surprise, lots of locals, expats and tourists were already aware of this type of coffee. This kind of brewing is indeed very popular in the West, Japan, South Korea and Bangkok. Oh, originally from Bangkok, explained, “We didn’t want to be just another coffee shop, there are so many ... In our long coffee business history in Phuket, we began our 1st wave in 1960, and by 2011 (2nd wave), we began serving espresso and frappuccino. “Now, we firmly believe we are in the 3rd wave where coffee is treated as artisanal foodstuff rather than a commodity. Coffee is to be appreciated, not just enjoyed. “Our mission is to make our brand genuinely represent locals, and as a sustainable, adaptive and creative business. It might take some time for the customers to get used to all the different options on the menu.” Indeed, while the coffee is tasty, the café has also introduced cold-pressed juice: 100 per cent raw, no artificial colour, no sweetener, and no preservatives, a health phenomena many youth of today are yearning towards. “Many of our customers buy coffee along with juice. It became so popular that we created another brand, and its tag line is ‘Phuket Living Juice’ due to the fact that it uses a slow squeeze process to extract the juice out. “More and more people are concerned about their health. We feel that this product is the answer to that question. Initially, we didn’t think that these would be so successful, especially with the locals. But to our surprise, they do actually buy them. “As well as this, we are also excited

Experimenting with organic, biodegradable recipes Chef Barry Anderson editor@classactmedia.co.th

T

his article features one of my Good Earth recipes, which may come as a surprise to those who may have had preconceived ideas about our current food supply issues that we never seem to hear about on national news.

So why organic? Most people are under the impression that conventional perishable produce looks and tastes the same as the organic food that is being offered, but with a much higher price tag at the till. With that in mind, most people, including the hospitality industry, opt for the cheaper priced conventional fruit or vegetable, thinking that they can easily wash off the chemical residues with water. Agricultural facts tell us a completely different story and most organic and chemical agricultural farmers already know this information that I am about to share with you. It is no wonder that virtually all chemical farmers will not eat their own commercial cash crops feeding the public, but instead will eat their organically produced produce in the back of the farm house, to protect their family from the threats we now face from our current food supply today. The fact is, all plants, including the ones that we eat, are naturally systemic in nature. Meaning that the toxic chemicals are banned from use by the EPA (the US Environmental Protection Agency), but sold commercially to overseas farms to be imported into your country. Systemic means that the plants’ root system readily absorbs chemicals internally up the stem, into the leaves, and into the fruits and flowers. Washing, rinsing and using useless products will not help you. Now the myth is dispelled, and now you know that organic is your only option for safe, sustainable, good health in your life.

What the Good Earth Chef Barry does Chef Barry’s garden provides organic fresh foods at about 30 per cent and the other 70pc consists of around 60pc organic produce sourced in from stores or speciality shops. Unfortunately the remaining 10pc is non-organic, because the current Thai agricultural base is under great threat right now. Why biodegradable? Biodegradable waste is a type of waste which can be broken down in a matter of weeks, into its base compounds by micro-organisms and other living things, regardless of what those compounds may be. Biodegradable waste can be commonly found in any organic material from nature, in most cases, that will naturally decompose and break down into a green waste. Today, we are losing top organic soil that sustains all life, including those essential minerals that can only be found in such soil, such as vitamin B-12. Why vegan, raw? Organic raw food is loaded with essential enzymes and pre and probiotics from cultured raw foods to feed your intestinal flora, that makes up about 80pc of your immune system function. The master of all nutrients is in raw organic perishable produce, which is called “Glutathione”. It is made inside your body and found in every cell and only raw foods can do this for you. Most cooked foods cannot. Your recipes at home should look like a spa salad and yes, even when you eat out everything should look like a spa salad. Can

you imagine how healthy the world population would be eating so organically like this? Wherever you live please support our local organic farmer friends in season, to give yourself the most optimal spa salad possible. You will notice that I list the temperate zone options, since this is a Thailand organic tropical spa salad. Spa recipes should not take long to make, usually around five to 10 minutes. Anything over 15 minutes is starting to get too complicated, and you’re most likely overheating your foods. Chef Barry juiced the following: 1 A cup of fresh cubed pineapple, the food enzyme bromelain, which tenderises and digests meats easily. Temperate option is green or any organic apple or pear. 2 One whole organic carrot. 3 One cup of cubed organic pumpkin with skins. 4 One cup of your choice of organic leafy greens. 5 One whole lemon with skin and seeds removed, diced, plus add garlic cloves to your own desire. Method: juice then put aside and place the leftover dietary fibre, and stuff a small cup with your serving dish flat up against the bowl, flip it all over and remove the bowl for a perfect organic veg fruit pilaf. 6 Surround your pilaf with your choice of garden leafy greens, which provides vitamin K-1 and the essential mineral, magnesium, that is lacking in the Standard American Diet. 7 To add vitamin K-2 taste, simply mix the following in a sauce bowl. One tablespoon of cold pressed organic coconut flower vinegar and for temperate zones option, cold pressed apple cider vinegar. 8 One tablespoon of fresh lemon juice or mixed lemon lime. 9 One teaspoon of organic raw honey unfiltered (non-vegan) but still healthy, and coconut flower syrup (vegan). Temperate would be maple syrup. If you do not see the word raw on the product then it is not raw. 10 Add one level teaspoon of bee pollen, it’s not vegan but it’s natures’ original supplement of choice and this product must be stored in the fridge at all times. 11 Now depending on your tastebuds, add a dash of Thai chilli powder or red temperate ground Cayenne red pepper. Add a tablespoon of organic coconut oil. For temperate choices olive oil or flax seed oil. 12 Mix all together and pour the dressing over your pilaf and garden greens. 13 Garnish the top of your pilaf with pre-soaked goji berry. For temperate zones, fresh made apple sauce and cinnamon powder. Finally, frame the recipe with your edible flower of choice. Chef Barry used the beautiful edible bougainvillea flower petals. thephuketnews

‘Thainess’ in the 21st century CULTURAL INSIGHTS Steven Layne editor@classactmedia.co.th

@thephuketnews

A

n increasingly common cultural PR buzzword in the kingdom these days is ‘Thainess’ (in Thai, “kwam bpen Thai” ความเป น ็ ไทย), which refers to the various characteristics that define the Thai people and their rich culture, customs and mannerisms. Considering all the prevailing negative stereotypes about Thailand and Thai people, it is understandable why the Thai government would want to promote a greater understanding about Thainess. But Thainess is nothing new, though. Classical Thai dancers, golden-spired temples, floating markets – such Utopian images of Thailand have been widely exploited in tourism promo campaigns since the 1970s and 1980s, widely portrayed in “Visit Thailand” posters pinned up at tour offices and Thai restaurants around the world. Those initial impressions we drew from such imagery may still have a place in many of our hearts; at first sight, we were immediately drawn in, awed and intrigued by such cultural colour... While these iconic elements are indeed uniquely Thai and have been for centuries, they don’t accurately reflect or portray the identity of the modern Thailand and the majority of its people. Much is the disappointment for many to learn that such images are far from the reality, that the Thai people of the present day, for better or worse, have long-evolved, and made numerous self-preserving identity-sacrifices over the decades and centuries in keeping up with the so-called movement for modernisation. Most Thai people today have never even been on an elephant, let alone sat on a wooden canal boat – certainly not commuting. Indeed, floating markets and elephant camps are little more than fading tourist attractions to meet the expectations of those still seeking to fulfil expectations of that glorious, idealistic image of century-old Siam. Many luxury hotels will continue to market and exploit this expectation. And it is at/through such properties where you still may be able to see a classical Thai dance/music performance, or book a trip to the nearest floating market or to the jungle for an elephant ride. But beyond the hotel lobby’s tour desk, you’ll eventually have to emerge from that proverbial cave of allegory, coming to the realisation that the majority of the khlongs have long been abandoned or filled in with concrete. Modern Thai people spend thousands of hours a year in traffic jams, if not on the back of a recklessly speeding motorbike, or squeezed shoulder-to-shoulder in overcrowded public transport ... But such “modernisation” challenges are not unique to Thailand, and ubiquitous across the developing world. As for embracing “Thainess” in a modern context, we must look below the surface, where there lies a certain prevailing charm and lure; it is just as much about the outlook and hospital nature of the Thai peo-

Sure, there are plenty of exceptions to this good-willed nature, but let us

not forget that deceit and greed are universal wherever there is ignorance and economic disparity, so let us try hard not to feed such negative pessimism, and instead embrace the longevity-enabling optimistic outlook for which Thainess is foremost and firmly rooted. Bodyslam enthralls Phuket

5,000+ fans flock to charity concert at Laguna

O

n Saturday August 22, Laguna Phuket saw five thousand fans and concert goers group together for the sold-out “Laguna Phuket presents Bodyslam Concert 2015” at Laguna Grove, the resort’s outdoor large-scale event venue and home to its annual international sporting events. Staged amidst beautiful parks on a tree-lined setting overlooking one of the resort’s lagoons, the charity concert featured a local band “Boynavio Group” as the opening act, followed by a performance by another local band “Umbrella”. It was then time for the main event, where Thailand’s No. 1 rock band “Bodyslam” took over the stage and got the crowd up on their feet. The night ended with a touching, heartwarming note when the band performed the last song “Life is Still Beautiful” and large LED projectors showed a surprise video clip of eleven Phuket Punyanukul students with hearing impairments translating the song lyrics to sign language. As well as enjoying the music, concert goers were able to participate in Laguna Phuket’s fundraising for Phuket Punyanukul School. “Part of the ticket sales goes to refurbishing a locker room and install-

ing proper storage cabinets, lockers and shelves much needed for the students’ dormitory at Phuket Punyanukul School,” said Mr Ravi Chandran, Managing Director of Laguna Phuket. “The Laguna Phuket Foundation (LPF) will also contribute another B20,000, totalling the amount to B70,000, to be donated for the cause.” “We believe in sustainable commu-

nity development, the goal achievable only with sufficient educational opportunities given to the young members of our communities. “We all know someone close to us who would desire knowledge and skill, and yet through no fault of their own, finds learning at the pace of a typical school classroom a real challenge. Wonderful schools like Phuket Punyanukul are our society’s way of giving these children a place to thrive upon,” he concluded. The band’s vocalist “Khun Toon” is a frequent visitor to Phuket who enjoys spending time at various sporting events on the island such as the

annual Laguna Phuket International Marathon and Laguna Phuket Triathlon. He is praised for leading a healthy, drug-free lifestyle which inspires many of his young followers to follow suit. “I had run a marathon and participated in triathlons at Laguna Phuket before. Tonight was the first time my band and I performed here,” said Khun Toon. “I am impressed and happy with the concert and our performance tonight. ritish pop phenomenon One Direction are to take an indefinite break from next year, according to a media report Monday (August 24) which has left fans devastated. The four-piece boyband will separate for at least a year from March to pursue solo projects, according to UK’s The Sun newspaper, citing a “1D source”. The band, who enjoy a massive global teenage following, did not comment when contacted and have not commented on the tabloid report on their various Twitter accounts. “The guys have been together for five years, which is an incredible run for any boyband,” said The Sun’s source. “They fully deserve to have at least a year to work on their own projects. There is absolutely no bad blood between them and they are all 100 per cent behind the decision. “It is definitely not a split and they fully intend to get back together at some time in the future.” They are due to release

Zayn and Louis with Santtu of Seduction (centre) back in March. their fifth album before Christmas, and fulfill promotional commitments by the end of February, the report said. There will be no tour for the new album. The band’s last scheduled concerts are at the Sheffield Arena in northern England on October 29, 30, 31. They are currently touring North America and were due to perform in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Tuesday (August 25). Put together for a British television singing contest in 2010, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson swiftly developed a giant, fiercely loyal

following of young girls worldwide. The chart-toppers have sold more than 50 million records around the globe. Malik quit the band in March, shortly after being signed off with stress. “I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight,” he said at the time. The Sun’s report said the split would have happened regardless of Malik’s departure. The Sunday Times newspaper’s Rich List 2015 reckoned the band members were worth £25 million each. f you’ve had the chance to visit Royal Phuket Marina recently on a Wednesday night, you will have noticed that the haven sounds with live jazz and swing. Since your first step on the bayside boardwalk, you are charmed by the singer’s tender baritone and his partner’s masterful piano accompaniment. Only later comes the understanding that you have definitely seen both performers before. The most recent treasure discovered by The Speakeasy bar is Vladimir Baieff and Victor Platkov, also known as art-duo Silk. Both performers are expat residents of Phuket and both view music as the point of their lives. Vladimir has been singing for more than a decade while Victor’s musical career is even longer. As it often happens on the island, Vladimir and Victor met each other adrift. The men date their first encounter back to 2013, when they had their first (and only for quite a while) chance to perform together at a jam session. The second performance happened only in January this year. “A friend of mine invited me to give a concert at La Taverna and asked whether I have a partner to accompany me. The flashback from 2013 struck me immediately”, Vladimir recalls. The duo define their style as ‘the oldies’, meaning best hits from the past, including jazz, blues, swing, lyrical ballads and everything that helps to create a relaxed lounge atmosphere. “These are songs that were great sensations 20 or 30 years ago and are still popular now,” Vladimir says. dies and delivering them to the audience in a new, individual way. The public enjoys this meld of acquainted and unacquainted, like a new exotic flavour in a well-known dish. Run through the prism of individual perception and mood, Vladimir’s songs sound anew each time he performs. Even the singer himself fails to tell in advance what his “New York, New York” or “If I Ain’t Got You” will sound like on a particular night. “What we do is the 20th century classics in our own understanding. We perform in our own way, live these songs out in our way. This is more than just merely performing, this is creating,” Vladimir expounds. “We always sing and play on the first take; we improvise every time we hit the stage. What was blues yesterday can turn into swing tomorrow. Sometimes I even wish we were recorded to keep what comes off.” Having spent seven years in Phuket Vladimir tried various stages ranging from small jazz bars in Phuket Town to Tablspoon Café at Central Festival. All are different but all are equally infused by Thai freedom of artistic expression. “The Speakeasy blankets you with the relaxed atmosphere of a piano bar. Phuket Town comes with unpredictable New Orleans jams with new faces and people to meet. Patong is more simple and more about rock,” Vladimir says touching the most thorny issue for all serious performers in Phuket. Indeed, sooner or later every local musician asks themselves where there is any demand for quality music on the island or is it limited to endlessly repeating Hotel California on soi Bangla. Vladimir is strongly convinced that qual-

ity performers and quality listeners are here waiting to meet each other. The latter may be tricky. “My personal mission is to enhance the prestige of quality music. We are not alone; there are many strong performances on the island. And there are people asking for a different level of music, but very few know where to look for it,” Vladimir says with a smile. The situation might change with Silk’s first album hitting the shelves. There is every reason to expect it coming, even despite the fact that according to Vladimir and Victor all the records are to trace progress only. “Everything in this world happens for a reason. I can even thank the drop in the tourist market, because without it we wouldn’t have had time for our music. But it happened for the good and we are now heading forward at a good pace,” the performer concludes. Vladimir and Victor perform at The Speakeasy every Wednesday and at La Taverna every Saturdays. The duo start from 7pm till late. For other places, please visit Facebook. com/ArtDuoSilk.

After the game, rumours were f lying around that Ronin’s president Pramukpisit Achariyachai had gone to the dressing room and blasted the players for the result and not playing with their heart. “Yes, I did say something like that, but I was angry at the time, but now I have calmed down,” he said. Coach Songyot ‘Dang’ Klinsrisuk also expressed his responsibility after the Ronins got their defeat. “I have no problem with what the club’s board members decide about my future. “I have tried my best and worked so hard with the team, but we still cannot get a good result. I do understand the situation,” he said. However, Mr Pramuk confirmed that Coach Dang will keep his role as coach. “I don’t have any problem with Coach Dang, he has worked so hard and brought in a good system to the team. United ousted for 3rd FUTSAL

VICTORY IS NOT GUARanteed for Phuket United this Sunday (August 29), when they come up against top club Thai Port FC, but hopefully lessons were learned in the Andaman Pearl’s most recent defeat. Phuket were bumped from their 3rd place position on the Futsal Thailand Premier League (FTPL) table, losing away to Siam Navy 6-3 last Sunday (August 23) in Bangkok. @thephuketnews

Both sides came out on the attack, exchanging fruitless blows for the first quarter of the match, until the 11th minute when Navy’s Wiphutsana Piemsawat broke the ice, with the home side’s leading scorer Jessada Chudet doubling their lead just before the half time break. Phuket’s sharp shooter Suttiporn Kludcharoen put his side on the scoreboard in the opening minute of the second half, but that was answered a minute later by Navy’s Wirayut Wonchiengrak. Navy

put two more on the board through Amphon Srirakaeo and Weerayut Wonchiengrak’s double. At the 35th minute mark, “Action Jackson” Santos narrowed the deficit, bringing the score to 2-5, but it was Chudet to seal the match with a goal in the final minute. Full Time: Siam Navy 6-3 Phuket United. Phuket dropped into 6th place, with only four mour matches remaining in the season. Steven Layne

The youngsters have been training at Thanyapura ahead of the FINA Junior World Championships.

English swim team trains on-island SWIMMING

A

dozen of England’s best junior swimmers dived into Thanyapura’s Olympic pools recently to train ahead of their journey to the FINA Junior World Championships which is to be held in Singapore next week. The British Junior National Swimming Team has been using Thanyapura’s facilities as a training pit stop, and heat acclimatisation camp on the way

to the games, where the talented future Olympians are expected to walk away with a bounty of medals. Head of Performance Pathway for British Swimming, Tim Jones said: “Going into a competition in Singapore, Thanyapura is the perfect place to train before the games. “It is a very secure and relaxed environment with high quality training facilities and food. It is also a great place to catch breath for a few days before we move onto the hustle and

bustle of Singapore. “They are a great group of talented young swimmers and every one of them is going to have the chance to go to the Olympic trials next year, and push for a place on the Rio Olympic team. “There are seven or eig ht of the swi m mers who were medalists at the European Games earlier this year and one lad, Luke Greenbank, of Cumbria, set a new Junior World Record. “There is real quality in this team.” The group of 12 features

some of the best young girl and boy swimmers who are aged 16-18. Thanyapura’s Head of Swimming, Coach Miguel Lopez said: “Over the past few days, our guests and members have been exposed to world class t raining methods from the British Junior National Swimming Team. “Some of these kids will be the strongest swimmers in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and we got to see what they can do before they become stars.”

Bussaba Yodbangtoey, president of the Thai Amateur Weightlifing Association, said despite last week’s deadly blast at Bangkok’s Ratchaprasong intersection, no countries had withdrawn from the tournament. In fact, the number of participants is higher than expected, she said. “This shows that foreign-

ers are confident that Thailand is safe,” Ms Bussaba said. A total of 395 lifters will take part in the tournament at the Saphan Hin Sports Centre. There are 15 weight classes, eight for men and seven for women. “Our athletes are ready for the tournament and I am confident that we will get good results,” Ms Bussaba said. “It is a warm-up tournament ahead of the world championships to be held in the US in November.” The Thai squad is led by 2012 Olympic silver medallist Pimsiri Sirikaew in the women’s 63kg. The other Thai hopefuls include Sukanya Srisurat and Panida Kamsri. The tournament will be broadcast live on Channel 6 SD.

Thais haul at AFF Awards FOOTBALL

W

ith his silky skills and his ability to wrong-foot defenders at will, Thailand’s Chanathip Songkrasin has emerged as the best of the best by scooping the Player of the Year honour at the Asean Football Federation Awards Night at the Novotel Yangon Max Hotel in Yangon last Saturday (August 22). The 5ft 2in BEC Tero Sasana midfielder was instrumental in Thailand’s campaign at the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2014 where his two goals steered the Kingdom to their fourth Asean crown when they beat Malaysia in the final. “I am of course very happy to win this award,” said Chanathip. “As a player, I am very grateful to be given this honour as it will drive me to be even better next year.” The night belonged to Thai-

Chanathip Songkrasin, front centre, and the other Thai players with their awards. Photo: Bangkok Post land as they took home nine out of the 18 awards, with six of their players being named to the AFF Best XI of 2014. They were Kawin Thamsatchanan, Tanaboon Kesarat, Peerapat Notechaiya, Sarach Yooyen, Kroekrit Thaweekarn and Chanathip. Thailand head coach Kiatisak Senamuang won the Best Coach award for men, while Nuengrutai Srathongviang was voted the best coach for women. The Kingdom’s men’s team

and its futsal team were also rated as the best. “It has been a great and wonderful year for Thai football but I would like to point out that all of this would not have been possible without the cooperation of everyone involved – inside the team and outside,” said Worawi Makudi, the president of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT). “The players and officials worked hard towards this success and I hope that we can do

even better after this.” Mr Kiatisak said, “I would like to thank every player and the FAT for this honour. We worked hard and these prizes will serve as good inspirations for myself and the players.” “This will also send a message to other Asean nations how great Thai football is. Every country is interested in our team and has an eye on us after we received many awards so we must keep on improving.” Bangkok Post

F1 controversy in Belgium BOX OF NEUTRALS

Michael Lamonato michael@boxofneutrals.com

T

he Formula One season burst back into life as literally as possible at the Belgian Grand Prix after two eerily similar tyre failures plunged the sport’s tyre supplier Pirelli into controversy. Nico Rosberg was the first to suffer a terrifying accident during free practice last Friday (August 21) when his rear-right failed at high speed and pitched him towards the barriers, his car stopping just short of impact. Equally serious was the race day failure undoing the good work of Sebastian Vettel, who was robbed of his podium place behind the two ultra-dominant Mercedes cars when his rear-right also gave way, this time at the exit of the famous Eau Rouge corner. The German told the BBC in an expletive-laden interview after the race that Pirelli’s rubber wasn’t up to scratch. “Things like that are not allowed to happen, full stop,” he fumed. “If it happened 200 metres earlier, I’m not standing here now, I’m doing 300 [kilometres per hour] stuck in Eau Rouge. “As I said, if this happens earlier,

I don’t know what else needs to happen.” Pirelli laid the blame for Vettel’s failure at the door of Ferrari for attempting to complete 28 laps on a single set of tyres, and made its stance clear in a short and sharp press release after the race. “In November 2013, Pirelli requested that there should be rules to govern the maximum number of laps that can be driven on the same set of tyres, among other parameters to do with correct tyre usage,” it said

in a statement. “This request was not accepted. “The proposal put forward a maximum distance equivalent to 50 per cent of the grand prix distance for the prime tyre and 30 per cent for the option. “These conditions, if applied today at Spa, would have limited the maximum number of laps on the medium compound to 22.” With the Italian Grand Prix at the super-fast Monza circuit less than two weeks away, and Pirelli already

scheduled to bring softer tyres than usual, many heads will need to be smacked to find a workable solution to this latest source of tension. Vettels’ tyre failure opened the door to Lotus’ Romain Grosjean to take his first podium since the 2013 United States Grand Prix, with the added bonus of being a much needed boost for the ailing English team. Lotus’ season has been a tale of financial woe, culminating in former reserve driver Charles Pic suing the team for lost testing time during 2014.

With the litigating parties unable to reach settlement before the race weekend, bailiffs were called in to keep Lotus’ owners honest – but speculation places the team weeks at best away from a humiliating collapse into administration. Its only hope of salvation may be in the form of Renault, which is looking to re-enter the sport as a fully-fledged constructor by buying a team for the 2017 season – and picking up the pieces of a shattered business would be a significantly easier business proposition than negotiating a sale. However, the deal between Renault and Lotus, rumoured to be close to completion, has apparently gone cold, with Force India team principal Vijay Mallya confirming he had discussions with Renault ambassador and multiple F1 champion Alain Prost over the weekend about his openness to the French brand acquiring a majority stake in the squad. After almost a month of vacation, Formula One has hit the ground running, and if there’s one thing this sport knows how to do, it is open with a bang. The Italian Grand Prix can’t come soon enough. Don’t forget to tune in to Live 89.5 from 9am on Saturdays to hear Box of Neutrals talking all there is to hear about F1 and a whole lot more.

Pedro earns Chelsea win FOOTBALL

D

ebutant Pedro Rodriguez inspired 10-man Chelsea to a 3-2 victory at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday (August 23), while Manchester City recaptured the Premier League summit by winning 2-0 at Everton. Pedro scored Chelsea’s opener and created a goal for Diego Costa as Jose Mourinho’s side went 2-0 up at The Hawthorns. Having earlier missed a penalty, James Morrison scored twice in response, but despite captain John Terry’s red card for a last-man foul, Cesar Azpilicueta’s first league goal proved enough to give Chelsea a first victory of the Premier League season. Asked for his thoughts on Terry’s dismissal, Mourinho told Sky Sports: “I prefer to have no views. I prefer to try to keep quiet. “I know many people are disappointed with this result. People love Chelsea to lose again. I’m so happy the players

got what they deserve.” At Goodison Park, both sides hit the woodwork either side of half-time, with Romelu Lukaku skimming the crossbar from an Everton free-kick and David Silva rattling the post for City. Lukaku had earlier seen a goal ruled out for offside, but it was City who took the lead on the hour. Raheem Sterling glided into the Everton box from the left and slipped a pass to the overlapping Kolarov, who deceived Tim Howard with a near-post finish from an almost impossible angle. Nasri sealed victory in the 88th minute by playing a one-two with Yaya Toure and neatly lobbing Howard. “I am very satisfied because it was a difficult team,” said City manager Manuel Pellegrini. In Sunday’s other game, Watford and Southampton were both left waiting for a first win after a drab 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road. The best chance of a poor game fell to Watford midfielder

English Premier League 2015 - 2016 Team 1 2

Chelsea’s Spanish midfielder Pedro celebrates scoring the opening goal of their English Premier League match against West Bromwich Albion. Photo: Justin Tallis/AFP Etienne Capoue, but he headed over the bar from close range. On Monday night (August 24), Arsenal and Liverpool had to settle for a point each after a richly entertaining game of two halves beneath the Emirates Stadium drizzle implausibly finished 0-0. With Arsenal centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny absent Liverpool dominated the first half, hitting the woodwork twice and seeing Petr Cech produce an astonishing save to deny Christian Benteke, although Aaron Ramsey also had a goal contentiously ruled out for Arsenal. The hosts took control in the second half, Alexis Sanchez striking the post, but Liverpool held firm for a result that left them two points below leaders Manchester City and three points above Arsenal. “I thought we were outstanding. We showed everything,” Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers told Sky Sports. Meanwhile, Manchester United’s winning start to the Premier League season ended on Saturday (August 22) as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle United at a sunsoaked Old Trafford.

The hosts dominated the early stages and Wayne Rooney saw a goal ruled out for a tight offside, but Newcastle went close when Aleksandar Mitrovic headed against the bar. Louis van Gaal’s side laid siege to the Newcastle goal in the second half, Tim Krul saving from substitute Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling heading against the post, but Newcastle debutant Florian Thauvin was inches away from toeing in a late winner at the other end. “We can be satisfied with the performance, but not with the result. We were unlucky,” said Van Gaal Elsewhere, Leicester City were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham. Delle Ali headed in a cross from Nacer Chadli to give Spurs an 81st-minute lead at the King Power Stadium, but within a minute Riyad Mahrez had cut in from the right and curled home his fourth goal of the season to level. “I am happy. My players have a fantastic spirit. It was an outstanding goal and Riyad Mahrez is a very good player,” said Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri. Callum Wilson plundered a hat-trick as Bournemouth

won 4-3 at West Ham United to claim a first ever top-flight victory. Wilson exploited a pair of errors by Aaron Cresswell to score twice in the opening 28 minutes, only for a Mark Noble penalty and a Cheikhou Kouyate rebound to draw West Ham level early in the second period. But substitute Marc Pugh restored Bournemouth’s lead and Wilson completed his hat-trick from the spot after Carl Jenkinson had been sent off, before Modibo Maiga hit back for West Ham. “It’s a fantastic day on a personal note, but the important thing is we got the three points,” Wilson told BBC Sport. “In the first two games I think there were nerves, but today I felt we showed real confidence.”

Meanwhile, debutant Bakary Sako struck in the 87th minute to give Crystal Palace a 2-1 win at home to Villa, who had been in line for a point after a Pape Souare own goal cancelled out Scott Dann’s header. Bottom club Sunderland stopped the rot after two straight defeats by drawing 1-1 at home to Swansea City, with Jermain Defoe equalising for the hosts after Bafetimbi Gomis had scored his third goal of the campaign. Record signing Xherdan Shaqiri created an early goal for Mame Biram Diouf on his Stoke City debut, but his side had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Norwich City due to Russell Martin’s 28th-minute equaliser. Outrigger T20 Table

T

he 11th and 12th Outrigger Resorts T20 matches were played at the Alan Cooke Ground (ACG) on Sunday morning (August 23) with results going Patong and Thalang ways. In match 11, Patong CC won by 13 runs against a motivated Madras Café Superkings’ side. Patong CC won the toss and decided to bat first with Imtiaz Mushtaq and Justin Swart opening. There had been a fair amount of rain overnight; however, the pitch and outfield had drained well and conditions were good for batting. The decision to bat first immediately paid off with the Superkings’ opening bowlers gifting Patong early runs through a series of erratic overs. The wicket of Swart (1) came out of the blue with the batsman playing around the only straight delivery he had faced. This brought the in-form Henno Jordaan to the crease, and together with Mushtaq pushed the scoring along until a communication error resulted in the run out of Mushtaq for 22, ending a 48 run partnership. Stuart Hamilton was the

next batsman in and started off where Jordaan had left playing confidently, scoring freely taking the score to 100 for the loss of two wickets at drinks. Shortly after the break, Jordaan (41) played an uncharacteristic shot and was caught, narrowly missing out on his half century. Débutante, Du Plesis (12), was next batsman and after a slow start, looked to play his shots and put the fielding team under pressure – but was eventually bowled looking to push the score along. With 1.5 overs left, Dave Thomas joined Hamilton looking to dispatch every ball faced. Unable to find the boundary due to the slower than usual outfield, the batsman had to settle for quick singles and doubles. Hamilton (42) was eventually bowled

looking to clear the rope, bringing Van Blerk to face the last ball of the innings. A poorly judged quick single resulted in Thomas being run out at the non-strikers end. Patong innings ended at 169 for 7. With a required run rate of 8.5 per over, the Superkings needed to start their innings off quickly, with Ullah and Khan opening the batting. This did not materialise, however, with Ullah (4) being run out in spectacular fashion by Mushtaq, a direct hit from outside the circle leaving Ullah well short of his crease. This wicket brought Divan Mydeen to the middle and in determined fashion, looked to play his shots from the very first ball. If the Superkings were to win this match, this was the crucial period. Khan (11)

was the next wicket, nicking an edge to keeper Van Blerk. Mushtaq again was centre of the action, when he sent batsman Mir (3) back to the clubhouse with an audacious one handed catch above his head at long off. The wheels were coming off the Superkings’ run chase with Rehman and Mydeen needing to steady the ship. Both batsmen attacked the loose delivery keeping the scoreboard ticking until Mydeen (40) was caught at midwicket looking to attack. Four balls later, Ali (0) was back in the clubhouse having been clean bowled. With the run rate increasing all the time, the pressure was beginning to show and this time it was Rehman (41) who was bowled by a straight delivery. Naik (3) was later stumped by Van Blerk leaving

Desai and Virdikar the not out batsman after the 20 overs, just 13 runs short of victory. In match 12, Thalang Cricket Team (TCT) won by all 10 wickets against the so far win-less Phuket Asian Cricket Team (PACT). The PACT side won the coin toss and elected to bat first. Tight bowling early on restricted PACT’s score. The pressure built and three wickets fell prior to the drinks break with PACT 48/3. Shah Wahid hit a six and a four off consecutive balls in the 11th over, but then missed a straight delivery and was bowled for 21 runs. Umpire John King raised an experienced finger for an LBW appeal off the next ball and TCT’s débutante John Sykes was now on a hat-trick opportunity. To face the pressure ball,

out came 16-year-old Sattyam Sachdeva, who managed a deflection down to fine-leg from another of Sykes’ straight and slow deliveries, spoiling the party. PACT wickets continued to fall at both ends leaving the men in orange all out for 85 runs off 16 overs. Wahid top scored with 21 runs (13 balls). John Sykes 4/27, Jean Matthee 2/8 and Martin Hill 2/16 all took multiple wickets for TCT. PACT’s bowlers toiled away, but were unable to take a TCT wicket during their innings. Dipesh Bagdal and Yedu Ventrapatti were the best of the bowlers, with Andrew McMillan finishing on 38* (47) and Anthony Dupont rounding off a superb allround match for TCT posting 39* (38) after earlier taking 1/13 from 4 overs. The weekend’s results weren’t unexpected and further strengthen TCT and Patong’s positions at the top of the Outrigger T20 points table. Laguna are the most likely to challenge for a place in the final and will have the opportunity to gain vital points in the first match this coming Sunday against TCT. Outrigger T20 games are played each Sunday at the ACG with matches starting at 10am and 2pm. David Thomas & Andrew Macmillan
