huket Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan this week confirmed that his office has been able to ramp up the number of people to travel from Phuket to Bangkok on government-funded packages to pay their respects to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej at the Grand Palace. Under an order from the Interior Ministry, Provincial Offices around

the country are to provide free transport to Bangkok for 3,000 people in each of the country’s 76 provinces, providing the opportunity for a total of 255,000 people without their own means to travel to pay their respects the late King Bhumibol. Phuket was originally allocated to send 600 people per day. “That number has now been increased to 750 people per day,” Gov Chockchai told The Phuket News on Wednesday (Oct 26).

“The Interior Ministry sent an urgent letter to every Province Office in the country ordering each office to make arrangements for people to be able to travel to Bangkok from October 29, 2016 to January 20, 2017,” Gov Chockchai explained. “Every District Office and local municipality in Phuket has been tasked with accepting registrations from people wanting to join this arrangement,” he said. However, Donroman Senyeeheem,

Mourners offered free travel to palace Continued from page 1 ...“Phuket Provincial officials will lead the mourners to the Grand Palace in Bangkok. The buses will stop at Sanam Chai, opposite Phuket Provincial Hall, on these dates at 7pm,” he said. The allocated dates will ensure that those joining the public-funded pilgrimage will be allowed to enter the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall inside the Grand Palace to pay their respects before the late monarch’s urn. Starting tomorrow (Oct 29), mourners will be allowed into the hall from 8am to 9pm. Access will be allowed after the 15-day merit-making ceremony is completed today (Oct 28). Some 10,000 mourners will be allowed in daily, in groups of 100 at a time. Mourners are required to dress appropriately, Mr Donroman noted. “The Bureau of the Royal Household has stipulated that mourners entering the hall must wear only black, and jeans and denim shirts are not allowed,” he said. “Gentlemen must wear long pants and shoes (cover-

ing whole feet). Ladies must wear long-sleeves and their attire must not be close-fitting. Long skirts covering the knees or sarongs must be worn, and they must wear appropriate shoes (covering whole feet),” he added. While it is expected that only people without the means to secure their own transportation to Bangkok to pay their respects will join the government-arranged pilgrimages, Mr Donroman pointed out that Interior Ministry has made it clear that the government option is open to everyone. “There are no conditions. Anyone can register, regardless of their educational qualifications, line of work or even nationality,” he said. “Everybody can join, but they must register before the 750 allocated places for each of the four days are booked, otherwise they will simply miss out,” Mr Donroman added. “To register, people can call 076-224822 or register in person at Phuket Provincial Hall, or they can contact their local District Office or municipality,” he said.

Mr Kittisak attempted to talk the man down, but he did not listen and instead put on a blindfold and jumped.

Police and rescue workers take photos of the Frenchman’s body. Police checked the victim’s room at the neighbouring Saria Mansion, where he was staying, but found no signs of a struggle or robbery. However, police did find a note with a contact number

for the victim’s family in France and cash set aside for a motorbike rental. The French Consulate in Phuket were notified of the incident. Darawan Naknakhon thephuketnews

Taxi driver ‘bricked’, in ICU, after brawl with Russians Eakkapop Thongtub editor@classactmedia.co.th

our taxi drivers were injured, with one still in intensive care, in a street brawl with tourists, who are believed to be Russian, on big bikes in Karon last Sunday afternoon (Oct 23). One of the taxi drivers, who remains in the ICU at Patong Hospital, was reportedly hit in the head with a brick. Lt Nipon Temsang of the Karon Police confirmed to The Phuket News that four taxi drivers involved in the brawl were injured, while the tourists suffered only scrapes and bruises. “We were told that Russian tourists were revving their motorbikes very loudly and

Image: Video screengrab the local taxi drivers asked them to stop making such a loud noise, and this may have started the fight. “However, right now I cannot tell who caused the incident. We are still investigating and will seek justice for both parties,” he said.

Witnesses told The Phuket News that during the initial confrontation, one of the tourists threw a brick that hit a taxi, resulting in one the taxi drivers who was standing by to approach the foreigner. Details given to The Phuket News were vague, but the taxi

driver was reportedly hit in the head with a brick in the ensuing confrontation. A segment of the brawl was caught on video by a bystander, who shared it through the phone app Line under the name “Anan (mario)” The clip starts with a foreign man brandishing a piece of wood about one metre long while standing over a Thai man lying on the road. Four Thai men flee the scene while a second foreign man tries to restrain the first, and takes the piece of wood from him and throws it away. The wounded Thai man lying on the road is helped away from the scene, then a Thai woman picks up a brick from the middle of the street and threatens to launch at it the shirtless foreigner, who was initially holding the piece of wood. Eight Thai men then run onto the street to join the affray, with three of them carrying

their own sticks. Taunts become blows, but the exchange finally peters out. Witnesses told The Phuket News that the incident happened at about 2:40pm on Kata Rd, near the main three-way intersection in Kata Centre. Taxi driver Sangown Saeing, 36, said he and his friends were waiting at the taxi queue at Kata Centre when a group of tourists on big bikes drove past at speed, inspiring one driver to yell at them to slow down because the road is narrow. “One of them turned around and started using abusive language at us,” Mr Sangown said. “I walked towards him wanting to explain but he pushed me to the ground. All my friends saw the incident and came to help. Four of us were injured. One is at the ICU at Patong Hospital while the other three are out now. “We have already filed a complaint with the police about the incident,” he said.

Confusion on ‘Road to Kindness’ Years finished, one of Patong’s busiest roads still unsigned in English

The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

M

ore than two and half years after construction of one of the busiest roads in Patong has been completed there are still no street signs in English along the road so that tourists in the “international tourist destination” know which road they are actually on. Worse, the two authorities responsible for what most local expats know as “Phang Muang Sai Kor Rd”, which runs the entire length of Patong, has no signs in English – or any other language people who cannot read Thai will understand – nor are they forthcoming in the near future. Phang Muang Sai Kor Rd literally translates as “Town Plan Line/Route A Rd”, the name it was initially given during its construction as the town plan needed to attribute some form of identification to the road under construction. However, the name has stuck, despite a public poll years ago that decided the busy thoroughfare should be called “Phra Metta Rd” – with “Phra Metta” meaning “benevolence” or “kindness”, in keeping with the names of other major roads in Patong, such as Phra Baramee Rd,

The only sign in English (in red circle) is at the road’s northern junction with Phra Baramee Rd, and is not even official. Photo: Patong Municipality meaning “Prestige Rd” (or “Road of Prestige”). To the Phuket office of the Department of Rural Roads (PDRR), which built the road over the contracted 900 days at a budgeted cost of B211 million, Phra Metta Rd is called Route 4055, according to their own naming system for roads they build, and further signs or dedication of names are – according to them – not their job. “The road was actually completed in April 2014 to help ease traffic congestion,” PDRR Director Theerapol Jirarantankorn explained.

As such, the road also serves as a critical conduit throughout the town, as it connects with Phra Baramee Rd at the northern end of Patong, passes by the front doors of Patong Police Station and Patong Hospital, then continues behind the Jungceylon shopping mall and connects at the roundabout at the southern end of Patong so traffic can continue unimpeded onto Sirirat Rd to Karon, the next beach resort town to the south of Patong. Only two other roads run the entire length of Patong: Thaweewong Rd (the beach

road) and Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Rd – and both are one-way. The new road, yet to be signed in English, allows two-way traffic. “Phang Muang Sai Kor refers to the project name of Phuket roads during their construction, and there are many of these, such as Phang Muang Sai Kor 1 (Route A1), Sai Kor 2 (Route A2),” PDRR Director Theerapol explained. “Most roads we build are renamed after the project is completed, but locals still call this road by its project name (Phang Muang Sai Kor Rd),” he noted.

Mr Theerapol pointed out that the PDRR has posted one sign at each end of the road, revealing its true name of “Phra Metta Rd” – but the signs are in Thai only. “We are no longer responsible for naming the road. We built it and under the contract terms of construction we are still responsible for repairs to it, and we have posted signs marking the road’s name as ‘Phra Metta Rd’ – but we are not responsible for any more than that,” he said. “After the warranty period has concluded we will officially hand over responsibility for the road to Patong Municipality. They can put up more signs if they want,” he added. Patong Mayor Chalermluck Kebsup told The Phuket News that according to her the PDRR is still responsible for street signs along the road. “As you know this project is still under the Phuket office of the Department of Rural Roads. My understanding is it is still under the warranty period of the contract for construction. We cannot do any work on it yet,” she said. “And they have installed some signs (two, one at each of the far flung ends of the road) but the signs are in Thai only because the project plan

did not include signs in other languages,” she added. “But for the name, I think we may keep it just like that to keep people from confusion. We have street signs in Thai only and are not going to have it in English,” Mayor Chalermluck said. However, adding to Patong Municipality’s own confusion, the Patong Mayor also said her office had already posted “some” signs in English. “Patong Municipality has put up street direction signs identifying Phra Metta Rd in both Thai and English. They are posted on pylons at many junctions so tourists know what road they are on.” Mayor Chalermluck did not identify where these direction signs actually were. The Phuket News has yet to find any. In the meantime, an enterprising person has already had one sign installed in English at the road’s northern junction with Phra Baramee Rd. The sign identifies the road as “Phra Metta Rd”. Will this be how the road’s name will be spelt in English? According to Mr Theerapol, it should be spelled “Phra Meita Rd”. Patong Municipality and Mayor Chalermluck declined to discuss this point.

Festering sore re-opens

he murder of Patong Tuk-Tuk Club President Sakol Srisompotch on Tuesday (Oct 25) has reopened the festering sore that is the island’s so-called “public transport” industry. Kathu Police were quick to speculate that the murder was a result of a “personal dispute” and are no doubt already wrapping up their “investigation” which is unlikely to yield a suspect. As head of the notorious “Club” Mr Sakol led a very public stand-off with local police when tuk-tuks blockaded all roads in and out of Patong in July 2014, accusing police of unfair treatment. During the blockade Mr Sakol’s group demanded and received the removal of then-Kathu Police Chief Col Jirapat Pochanapan The cause of the tension during the blockade was an alleged rise of the number of illegal “black plate” (non-

commercially registered) tuktuks in Patong, to which police were declining to take any action against. Mr Sakol and his cadre of “yellow plate” (commercially licensed) tuk-tuk drivers took exception to this and demanded that police enforce the drivers’ legal monopoly. The implication being that police were acting in league with – or at the very least accepting payments from – the black-plate tuk-tuk owners, to allow them to operate with impunity. With the murder of Mr Sakol it seems that the power has shifted within the island’s taxi mafia and no doubt a new leading figure will emerge when the dust settles on this latest violence. The murder will also do little to convince the public that anything has changed for the better. This is despite the urging of no less a figure than Prime

Minister Gen Prayut Chano-cha, who when visiting Phuket last month (Sep 17) urged local authorities to fix the taxi mafia problem. Local police should hold PM Prayut to his call and ask for national military help in solving Phuket’s taxi mafia problem. As was demonstrated in the recent public transport crackdown in July, local police, with military help, can enforce the laws regarding public transport drivers and their vehicles effectively. In just three days, 573 Phuket public transport drivers were caught breaking the law, netting the government more than B7 million baht in fines. Instead of sporadic crackdowns, the laws should be enforced full-time and before long there wouldn’t be enough crooked tuk-tuk drivers left on the road to form a football team, let alone a mafia.

HAVE YOUR SAY No sympathy for the Devil

Re: Phuket tuk-tuk driver shot dead in Kathu This story just provides more testimony (as if that were needed) that tuk-tuk/public transport scum are one of the largest criminal elements in Phuket. And, once again, the impotent Thai police are the root cause of nearly all problems here in Phuket. Because they are worthless – everyone knows it – and are complicit in all illegal activities here. Ed Sanders It’s about time the police did daily random stop checks on taxi/tuk-tuk drivers to check for weapons. Oh hold on... That would mean the traffic police having to do some work – never happen! Strange how the police in charge of drugs seem to be able to do their job and we see multiple drugs arrest every week but we never see police arresting drunk drivers, speeding drivers, dangerous drivers? malczx7r

Re: Korean girl, 11, drowns off Phuket No one qualified to help on Koh Racha? Disgraceful if this is so. Even I could give CPR. All resort islands should have someone. Govt and Google ‘join forces’

Blocking effort sees 100 web addresses blocked in four days BANGKOK

A

lmost 100 web addresses on the popular video-sharing site YouTube were blocked from last Saturday (Oct 22) to Tuesday (Oct 25) for insulting the monarchy, the result of what the government is calling a “joint blocking effort” with Google. Another 380 web addresses, or URLs, on the site, run by a subsidiary of Google, are in the process of being blocked, said a government official responsible for monitoring and blocking inappropriate content online. The source said the government was also planning to invite representatives of Facebook to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation in blocking users that post content or comments insulting the monarchy. “Approximately 30-40 URLs with inappropriate content have been blocked per day since last week, compared with an average of two to 10 before we started working

@thephuketnews

Almost 100 web addresses on the popular video-sharing site YouTube were blocked for insulting the monarchy over a four-day period. Photo: Bangkok Post together,” the source said. Last Friday (Oct 21), Ann Lavin, director of public policy and government affairs at Google’s Southeast Asia and Greater China office, met Deputy Prime Minister Prajin Juntong to discuss the issue. The source said Google had put in place steps making it easier for the government to complain about YouTube posts considered offensive to the monarchy. Google em-

ployees in the US consider the requests. The effort includes a complaint report from the government available in Thai rather than only in English, as with previous versions. Google indicated it had Thai nationals to handle complaints around the clock. The source said the government has to send URLs with inappropriate content to Google’s office in the US for

review. It must also seek court orders in Thailand. The cooperation benefits the government because it shortens the process of blocking web addresses, the source said. It also helps avoid misunderstandings between the government and Google on what will be categorised as inappropriate content. “The government needs strong assistance from Google to permanently remove all the

web addresses showing inappropriate videos on YouTube,” the source said. Google spokesmen have insisted they have made no changes to their policies, which allow for site-blocking and YouTube video take downs after considering government requests on a case-by-case basis. Earlier, ACM Prajin said the government was monitoring and tracking 100 people either posting or making comments with inappropriate content insulting the monarchy online. The government also set up yet another “war room” to monitor and block inappropriate web addresses 24 hours a day by working with the two state-run Cyber Security Operation Centres. ACM Prajin did not mention another new self-styled monitoring centre at the headquarters of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). On Tuesday (Oct 25), Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha asked the public to refrain

from quarrels and let the lese majeste law do its job. Some netizens have turned angry after seeing online messages that allegedly defame the monarch. Others have criticised the censorship. Gen Prayut advised people not to use emotions to judge what they see. If they find any act to be insulting, they should first look into the reasons behind it. If it turns out that the action was ill-intended, they should let officers deal with the issue, he said. The Foreign Ministry will arrange extradition requests to other countries where suspects under Section 112 of the Criminal Code – better known as the lese majeste law – have fled, Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said. Following the Justice Ministry’s recent move to send letters asking authorities in other countries to extradite suspects whose posts breached Section 112, Mr Don said the ministry will help get the letters to these authorities. “We can ask for cooperation [from other countries],” he said. Vendors bilk mourners, raise black clothes prices BANGKOK

Staff of Siriraj Hospital give alms to monks to make merit for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej last weekend. Photo: Pornprom Satrabhaya

‘A dedicated king and good patient,’ doctor BANGKOK THE LATE KING BHUM I bol Adulyadej always strictly followed doctors’ advice so he could return to work for the people as soon as possible, a royal doctor at Siriraj Hospital said last week. The King had always worked hard during his reign, including during his treatment at Siriraj Hospital, said Prof Dr Teerawat Kulthanant, the former chief of royal doctors. The monarch had first been treated for heart disease and later suffered back pain. Dr Teerawat said as a former chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the hospital, he had witnessed first-hand the King’s great

patience during the courses of treatment which involved orthopaedic surgery. Later, the King was treated for a lung infection and excessive cerebrospinal fluid. King Bhumibol always followed doctors’ advice so he recovered quickly. Once well, he followed reports about people’s hardships through various media, Dr Teerawat said. After breakfast, the King usually worked in his office at the hospital where he had views of the Chao Phraya River, the Grand Palace and people, Dr Teerawat said. The late King stayed on the 16th floor of the Chalerm Phrakiat Building at Siriraj, where he had been treated for the last two years. Bangkok Post

random inspection found over 100 vendors in Bangkok have marked up the prices of black clothes during the mourning period for the passing of His Majesty the King, Department of Internal Trade (DIT) directorgeneral Nuntawan Sakuntanaga said last Sunday (Oct 23). The inspection was conducted after the department received a number of complaints about black clothing being sold at high prices. Ms Nuntawan said the inspection found more than 100 clothes vendors were exploiting the situation by selling black clothing at more than twice their price, particularly T-shirts with prices jumping from around B200 to B500 each, over the last 10 days. She said most of the items also did not have price tags, which is stipulated by law. Ms Nuntawan said warnings have been issued to the vendors. If they continue to fail to comply with laws and regulations, legal action would be brought against them.

While shops and stores are selling out black clothing at premium prices, volunteers are dyeing light-coloured clothing black, usually to give away. Photo: Thiti Wannamontha Consumers who come across overpriced black clothing may file complaints with the DIT, she added. After a recent surge in such complaints, the department also deployed more staff to conduct inspections in several provinces, she added. Meanwhile, commerce permanent secretary Wiboonlasana Ruamraksa on Monday (Oct 24) said she had instructed the DIT to conduct a random inspection at Chatuchak Market in Bangkok last Sunday. According to the inspec-

tion, out of 1,200 clothes vending stalls, 19 were fined for allegedly failing to provide price tags. She said prices of black and white clothes at the market would vary according to the quality of the fabric. Regular T-shirts should be sold at B60-B150 each, while consumers can expect to pay B179-B280 each for polo shirts and B199-B300 each for long sleeved T-shirts, Ms Wiboonlasana said. The ministry has also asked for cooperation from the State Railway of Thailand

(SRT), which rents out land plots to vendors at the market, to help communicate warnings to shoppers, she said. As for a mourning event for the late King jointly organised by the DIT and clothes manufacturers to give away black clothes to people nationwide, Ms Wiboonlasana said the private sector can’t yet produce enough black clothing to meet demand. However, the problem should ease in a few days as many products are expected to arrive next week, she said. Bangkok Post

Styrofoam a problem at Sanam Luang BANGKOK D ONOR S A R E BE I NG advised to switch from styrofoam food containers to biodegradable bagasse ones when supplying free food to mourners at Sanam Luang, as thousands of boxes have been left abandoned at the grounds after visitors leave, posing a headache for city cleaners. “Around 100,000 styrofoam food boxes are used each day. Many are being left as rubbish that we cannot dispose of easily,” said Prinya Thaewanarumitkul, vice rector of Thammasat University, in his capacity as the director of the university’s Volunteers for Dad coordination centre at Sanam Luang. “For the sake of the environment, let’s switch to biodegradable bagasse containers,” he said. Plastic water bottles are compounding the problem as mourners are drinking several bottles a day while at Sanam Luang, where the weather and crowds have been creating hot conditions, he said. Instead of taking several bottles each time, visitors should get only one each and

Volunteers serve up styrofoam bowls of som tam for mourners at the Grand Palace. Photo: Wichan Charoenkiatpakul have it refilled with water when they want more, he said. This way everyone can help decrease the number of plastic bottles left in the area. On average, about 80,000 people have been visiting Sanam Luang for the morning rite every day, with the amount of rubbish there doubling to approximately 66 tonnes per day, said deputy Bangkok governor Wanwilai Promlakkhano. The volume of rubbish reached 175 tonnes last Saturday (Oct 22) as the number of visitors peaked with large crowds singing the Royal An-

them and filming the event, she said. Since last Saturday, as much as 200 tonnes of rubbish has accumulated which needs to be sorted into different categories so it can be disposed of properly, said Preedao Aphaiwong, a deputy spokesman of City Hall. Of the about 1,700 people volunteering at the Thammasat centre, a number of them are responsible for sorting the waste, while others have taken up tasks such as storing donated items, said Mr Prinya. Emirati model breaks taboos Rafeea al-Hajsi struts the catwalk after years battling social constraints

I

DUBAI

n a flowing scarlet dress, Rafeea al-Hajsi fulfilled a dream by becoming the first Emirati model to strut the Arab Fashion Week catwalk after years battling social constraints. “It’s amazing to be on the catwalk... a lovely feeling,” she said. “I enjoy it with all my heart.” As she prepared to model two dresses by Lebanese designer Aiisha Ramadan, the model said excitement, fear and happiness all come together when she faces the audience. “When I see the lights on my face, life lights up with the feeling that international fame is ahead,” she said. A curvy brunette with long hair, a square jaw and light brown eyes, her passion for being on camera was obvious, even backstage. Surrounded by make-up artists and overwhelming Western models, she posed for the cameras in a black minidress, casting sultry looks.

Emirati model Rafeea Al-Hajsi presents a creation by Lebanese designer Aiisha Ramadan during the Arab Fashion Week. Photo: Karim Sahib/AFP Her phone never left her hand as she took selfies, uploaded clips, and streamed live video. “Even if I keep working 24 hours, I have no problem at all with modelling,” she said. She said she faced many obstacles in a conservative Muslim society where most local women cover themselves from head to toe in black abaya robes.

“I consider myself a very courageous girl to be in this field,” she said. “It was very difficult for me to become a model, especially as an Emirati.” Hajsi started off modelling traditional local costumes. She declined to give her age, but said she had to wait years for society to “open up a little”. “It took around eight years for you to see me standing

here in front of you,” she said. After five years of modelling local clothes, she started presenting radio and television shows, which opened up opportunities to move ahead in the world of fashion. Hajsi’s first appearance at a fashion show was earlier this year in France, when she modelled for Lebanese designer Ziad Nakad at Paris Fashion Week.

She then appeared at the opening of the third Arab Fashion Week, which takes place twice yearly. She took to the catwalk to model a long red one-sleeved dress and another off-shoulder black gown – both from Aiisha Ramadan’s Spring-Summer 2017 collection. The designer, also Lebanese, said her varied and colourful dresses were inspired by trips to amusement parks with her two-year-old daughter. She said Hajsi’s fuller figure made her stand out from super-thin fashion models, meaning women could relate to her. Hajsi “has a waist,” she said. “To me, this is my client. Rafeea represents the beautiful Arab girl. “We made her wear something very simple to show that the Arab girl knows how to dress in something simple and how it suits her.” She agreed that Arab models often face barriers keeping them out of the fashion world. “For the model to become international, she needs to re-

veal a lot of her body and this can be unacceptable in (Arab) culture,” the designer said. Hajsi admitted that she keeps society in mind when considering modelling offers, saying she has turned many down because of the revealing designs. “There are limits that I always consider,” she said. “It’s painful. Sometimes there is a dress I really like and which the designer wants me to wear, but I can’t because the design is not suitable for our society. “I sacrifice international fashion shows that are great opportunities for me, just to be considerate towards our society and my family,” she said. But she added that Arab Fashion Week showed Emirati society was becoming more open towards fashion. “I fought many things in my life as a model,” she said. “As you can see, I’ve reached a level where I am satisfied.” She flashed a big smile and headed off to pose for a nearby photographer. Fine dining hits new high California chef aiming to elevate haute cuisine to a new level UNITED STATES

C

hristopher Sayegh holds up two syringes filled with cannabis compound, primed to pump tiny amounts into a pomegranate sorbet, or a juicy cut of Wagyu Japanese beef as part of a bold new sensory experiment. As more US states move to legalise the use of recreational marijuana, the California chef is aiming to elevate haute cuisine to a new level. Armed with cooking skills acquired while working at Michelin-star restaurants in New York and California, Sayegh says his mission is to redefine haute cuisine with cannabis-infused meals that are becoming increasingly popular as the stigma surrounding marijuana gradually evaporates. “I am trying to give people a cerebral experience,” Sayegh, 24, said during a recent interview at The Herbal Chef, his Los Angeles-based company. “But I’m also really careful in how I take them along on this journey.” Sayegh’s foray into edible cannabis comes as more and

Only holders of a medical marijuana card can taste the creations of Christopher Sayegh. Photo: Jason Redmond/AFP more entrepreneurs look to capitalise on a new gold rush in California which is set to vote in November on legalising recreational marijuana for adults 21 and over. Five other states, including Alaska, Colorado and Washington, have already adopted similar legislation and more are expected to follow suit as cannabis moves out of the shadows and becomes more mainstream. Medical cannabis use is allowed so far in 23 states – including California – and that number is expected to grow, despite the fact that at

the federal level the product remains illegal. According to the Arcview Group, a cannabis investment and research firm based in California, legal sales of marijuana in the United States reached $1.2 billion (B62.8bn) in 2015, a 232 per cent increase over the previous year. By 2020, sales are expected to surpass $22bn (B769bn), the group said in a recent report, with California making up $6.4bn (B223.56bn) of that market. Such project ions a re enough to make entrepreneurs like Sayegh salivate and

quickly move to stake out their place in the burgeoning market of cannabis-laced cuisine. The young chef, who was studying molecular biology at university before dropping out to pursue his culinary project, said he has seen a huge uptick since starting his business about two years ago. His services, for now, are exclusively private affairs for people with medical marijuana cards, but he expects that hurdle to come down following the November vote on recreational marijuana. His meals, at $30 0 (B10,483) to $500 (B17,473) a

head, are aimed at taking diners on a unique “immersive” journey and not just getting stoned, Sayegh says. “I am literally changing people’s brain chemistry as the dishes go on,” he says enthusiastically, as his displays the tiny syringes he uses to spice up his cooking. “By the third course you feel it a little, by the fourth a bit more and by the fifth course, you’re starting to hit your groove. “So it’s like a symphony,” he adds. “I have to make sure that as the come-up is happening, the dishes correspond with that and as it’s coming down, the same happens.” Sayegh, who is of Jordanian descent, is even experimenting with cannabis-laced stuffed grape leaves, falafel, chickpea beignets and other Middle Eastern dishes. His cannabis-infused dishes even include “medicated” oysters. He says his family was appalled when he entered into his new venture, but they have since come around, even sampling, and enjoying, his creations. Sayegh and others, however, warn that as the appeal of

cannabis-laced food continues to increase and Americans grow comfortable with the concept, consumers need to be made aware that getting high on a cannabis meal is not to be taken lightly. “This is an inexact science in so many ways because so many factors come into play when you cook with cannabis,” said Robyn Griggs Lawrence, author of “The Cannabis Kitchen Cookbook”. “It’s not like ordering a JD and coke. “There is a whole discovery going on right now as this is kind of reaching out from the Wild Wild West.” Sayegh said he realises that his meals can pack a wallop and treads carefully when he gets behind the stove to concoct his recipes. “Cannabis is not like any other ingredient,” he said. “You have to be extremely careful because not only does heat play a very important role when cooking with cannabis, but you’re also taking people on a trip, literally, and you have a responsibility to make sure it’s done right. “This is not about throwing butter in a pan to get everyone super high.” AFP

‘Puppy farm capital’ Ireland dogged by trafficking IRELAND ILLEGAL DOG-BREEDing on an industrial scale has turned Ireland into the “puppy farm capital of Europe”, according to campaigners who say a recent crackdown is failing to curb the lucrative business. Thousands of puppies worth hundreds of dollars

each are shipped to British ports and then on to mainland Europe every year, many of them secreted in the back of vans and cars. Ireland’s canine trade is “a national disgrace”, said Brian Gillen, head of the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (DSPCA). “Our aim is to put them out of business,” he said.

“The more we inter r upt their trade, the more it hits them where it hurts: in their pockets. We want to make it uneconomic for them to continue.” Although buoyed by recent seizures at various ports throughout Ireland, welfare agencies continue to face an uphill battle against an export industry – much of it illicit – involving at least

30,000 pups a year worth up to 20 million euros (B769mn). Seven intelligence-led seizures at Irish ports over the past two months alone have yielded 150 puppies. Most were so-called “designer breeds” such as Beagles, Bichon Frises, French Bulldogs or King Charles Spaniels. One shipment discovered in a car boot was worth just under 30,000 euros (B1.14mn). Many of the puppies are too young to travel, lack mandatory pet passports and microchips and are a potential health risk due to a failure to inoculate them against the deadly rabies virus. All of them, according to welfare agencies, will likely develop mental and physical illnesses as a result of inbreeding and their treatment. Raids on illegal puppy farms have found cramped conditions, little or no exercise or interaction, poor sanitation and even lack of access to water. Campaigners say that the vast majority of smuggled

Some of the 59 puppies that were rescued at the port of Dublin during an operation involving the DSPCA, Gardia and Customs officials. Photo: AFP puppies continue to escape detection. Prosecutions are rare and to date nobody has been jailed for even the most flagrant breaches. “We do not believe that local authorities are best placed to enforce the regulations,” said Suzie Carley, a spokeswoman for Dogs Trust, a Dublin-based animal welfare group, calling on the central government to take control of the crackdown. The DSPCA has already worked with government agencies in Britain to develop a co-ordinated strategy for stemming a trade facilitated by the immediacy of the

internet and the popularity of certain smaller breeds. The twin-track approach involves high-profile seizures of “cargo” at ports in Ireland and Northern Ireland as well as public education campaigns to raise awareness among would-be buyers of the animal cruelty they are facilitating and the potential trouble they face for purchasing dogs illegally. Gillen said the export trade from Ireland is particularly prevalent due to “historically useless” legislation and “lax controls”, although the government has toughened laws in recent years. Pattaya Boat Show goes on Trade expo to go ahead but festivities annulled in show of respect MARINE The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

I

n remembering the nautical legacy of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and his passion for the sea and the Gulf of Thailand, organisers of the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, scheduled for November 24-27, 2016 at Ocean Marina Yacht Club, say the event will be held as scheduled. Marine tourism in the Gulf of Thailand is expected to boom. The 5th Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show is set to be the biggest yet with more boats on display than ever and new Customs rulings allowing visiting foreign vessels to stay longer in-country – together laying solid foundations for marine tourism growth in Pattaya and surrounds. “Management of Ocean Property and all the staff, organisers of the Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show, share in the people of Thailand’s sadness at this time, following the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej,” said a statement released by Ocean Property. “The trade show program remains the same, however, the previously planned social program will be changed

One of the highlights of the show is that visitors can view and walk through a boat, and if interested can go out for a test drive – something other shows in the region do not offer. – there will be no festival, entertainment activities or parties held at the venue during the boat show. Due respect during this period of mourning will be shown throughout,” the statement continued. Ocean Property predicts that Pattaya’s multi-billionbaht marine industry is poised to grow exponentially over the next few years. “Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show has grown steadily since it was launched five years ago. The event is a key business event for the marine industry, and in addition to welcoming many domestic visitors each year the event has grown to attract many

international visitors also. “The confidence that the international community has in this event and Thailand’s burgeoning marine industry underscores its potential and importance to the Thai economy,” said Dr Tirachai Pipitsupaphol, Managing Director of Ocean Property. Supporting Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show’s aim to make Pattaya the Riviera of Asia, to promote marine tourism in the region and showcase the Gulf of Thailand, is a new ruling on the temporary importation of visiting foreign yachts. “In the past foreign vessels entering Pattaya were given a relatively short period for tem-

porary importation. This has now changed. The Customs Department in Pattaya have agreed that the ‘Temporary Importation Permit for Visiting Foreign Vessels’ will allow international yachts a period of six months stay which can be extended in-country, opening up the region’s potential to visiting yachts from overseas,” said Mrs Montira Cherdchoo, Director of Map Ta Phut Customs House. This means that Pattaya will become a hub for regional marine tourism and is set to welcome more than 1,000 international yachts and superyachts annually in the near future, boosting Thailand’s tourism revenue.

“Many people are not aware of the beauty of this region. There are 187 islands in the Gulf of Thailand with 43 within one hour by boat of Ocean Marina itself. The cruising grounds are spectacular and the extended stay allowed for foreign yachts will help open up the region. This is a very positive move and the region is ready to welcome more than one thousand foreign yachts annually,” added Dr Tirachai. Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show is a large-scale international event that helps to drive marine business growth in the Gulf of Thailand. Pattaya’s marine tourism fundamentals are strong

and the region is expecting to become a leading marine tourism destination. The four-day Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show will showcase up to 20,375sqm of onshore and in-water exhibition space, including leading international boat and superyacht brands Admiral, Azimut Yachts, Beneteau, Cranchi, CNB Yachts, Jeanneau, Lagoon, Monte Carlo Yachts, Prestige, Princess Yachts, Sanlorenzo, Viking Yachts and Wider, as well as a large selection of brokerage yachts, and displays by marine products and suppliers, lifestyle products and services, luxury property and more. One of the highlights of the show is that visitors can view and walk through a boat, and if interested can go out for a test drive – something other shows in the region do not offer. The 5th Ocean Marina Pattaya Boat Show will take place November 24-27, 2016 at Ocean Marina, Pattaya, Thailand. The Phuket News is a proud sponsor of this event. New York state tightens rules on Airbnb PROPERTY NEW YORK STATE TIGHtened rules on home-sharing services like Airbnb last Friday (Oct 21), slapping a steep fine on people who rent their entire, unoccupied apartment for fewer than 30 days. Airbnb immediately fired back, saying it would sue to keep the law from taking effect. State officials “rewarded a special interest – the pricegouging hotel industry – and ignored the voices of tens of thousands of New Yorkers,” said Josh Meltzer, Airbnb’s head of public policy in New York. “A majority of New Yorkers have embraced home sharing, and we will continue to fight for a smart policy solution that works for the people, not the powerful,” he said. “We are filing a lawsuit in New York this afternoon.” A New York state law on the books since 2010 already @thephuketnews

prohibits renting an entire apartment for fewer than 30 days if the owner or lessor is not present. The new law forbids advertising for this kind of shortterm rental and imposes a fine up to US$7,500 (more than B262,000). New York state is one of the most lucrative markets for rental site Airbnb, with some 46,000 people offering lodgings online. In New York City, realestate and rental prices are so high that three quarters of the Airbnb hosts use the proceeds simply to be able to remain in their apartments, Airbnb argues. Airbnb is in the crosshairs of many cities around the world, where tourism industries see this increasingly popular type of home sharing, lacking the legal and tax constraints of commercial enterprises, as threatening revenues. Paris, notably, has qua-

drupled the amount of penalties for home owners who violate regulations – from 25,000 euros to 100,000 euros (about B952,000 to B3.8 million). Last week, officials of nine US cities – including New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles – sent a joint letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) accusing Airbnb and other short-term rental (STR) companies of a “lack of reliable, complete data” on the number of rentals and the amount of revenue. “Unfortunately, the industry has, according to news sources, stymied cities’ efforts to access this data by providing misleading data and opposing requirements that STR companies share complete and reliable data with the public,” they wrote. “It is very difficult for cities to develop policies that protect the public interest without an adequate understanding of how this growing industry is impacting our communities,”

they wrote, calling on the FTC to study whether individuals or firms are acting in a commercial manner. Airbnb in all its forms operates in more than 190 countries and has been valued at an estimated US$30 billion (B1.05 trillion). AFP

Three airlines set for removal of ‘red flag’ AIRLINES Bangkok Post

The Top 5 Thai Hotel Management Company (HMC) chains control 28% of the total HMC room inventory.

T

hree Thai-registered airlines are expected to be re-issued air operator certificates early next year after the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) issued the th ree airlines “red f lags” over safety concerns. The three are Thai Airways International, Bangkok Airways and Thai AirAsia. Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand director Chula Sukmanop said he believed the AOCs will be reissued to the three airlines by January or February. After passing the process involved in examining aviation documents at the end of this month, the airlines will go through the next stage which is aircraft inspection. The entire process will take about five months, he said. Mr Chula said the agency initially aimed at re-issuing AOCs to eight airlines by Febr u a r y. However, t he new AOC inspections for the five remaining airlines will begin in March.

CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF: The CAAT confirmed that THAI, Bangkok Airways and Thai AirAsia should receive their Air Operator Certificates early next year. He said the new timetable was for all 25 remaining airlines to pass the re-inspection with AOCs issued by September next year. The ICAO inspectors will also be invited to conduct fresh inspections to save time in a bid to lift the red f lag as quickly as possible. Mr Chula, however, said the agency was facing a lack

of qualified staff to issue AOCs, which was among the safety concerns raised earlier by the ICAO. I n order to solve the problem, existing inspectors have to be rotated so it will not affect the re-issuing of AOCs. As for solutions to the significant safety concerns, Mr Chula said Transport

Minister A rk hom Ter mpittayapaisith ordered the relevant agencies to report directly to the ICAO through its website by the end of the month. If the ICAO reviews the report and finds any f laws, it will inform Thai authorities. But if there are no mistakes, the certificates will be approved.

FOR THE PAST DECADE, Thailand’s surging tourism industry has fueled a growing number of Thai hotel management companies (HMCs). Spurring this trend has been upward demand from a rising domestic and regional consumer class coupled with a virtual explosion in low-cost airline expansion, reports Bill Barnett, Managing Driector of consulting group C9 Hotelworks. “This developing storyline is reflected in data from C9 Hotelworks new Thailand Hotel Management Company Overview, with Thai HMCs currently operating 643 hotels across the country, with a total

inventory of 77, 654 keys,” Mr Barnett notes. “As a by-product of Thailand’s first tourism boom in the 1980s and 90s local expertise sprang up from the influence of international chains. “This transfer of knowledge, best practices and management ability incubated and eventually the combination of experience and local traditional hospitality have edged into the modern Thai HMC. Looking across Asia, the country ranks as a leader in the hospitality sector,” he said. Upscale lifestyle-oriented boutique hotel brands were also showing signs of rapid market development he added. Bank profits soar in year-on-year reports FINANCE E L E V E N SE T-L I ST E D banks delivered a 16-per-cent year-on-year increase in net profit for the three months to September, thanks largely to lower impairment charges. Banks reported a combined net profit of B54 billion during the July-to-September quarter, up from B46.6bn

posted over the same period last year, according to their filings to the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET). They set aside a total of B39.1bn for the third quarter, down significantly from B50.3bn in the corresponding period a year ago. Kiatnakin Bank was the best performer among its industry peers in terms of percentage.

The small bank’s quarterly consolidated net profit stood at B1.69bn, up 83% from B923mn year-on-year, with higher income from net interest, fees and services cancelling out higher impairment charges. The bank’s net interest rate income surged 19.5% year-on-year to B2.96bn in the third quarter, and its net fee and services income

rose 7.7% to B888mn. It put aside loan-loss reserves of B1.01bn in the quarter, up from B941mn a year earlier. Krungthai Bank (KTB), the country’s second-largest lender by assets, was the No.2 performer, with a 61% rise in quarterly consolidated net profit to B8.62bn. The gain was attributed to a sharp reduction in its impairment cost to B7.64bn for the quarter from B10.45bn a year earlier. KTB’s loan-loss coverage ratio stood at 106% at the end of September. In the third quarter last year, KTB was required by the central bank to fully set aside provisions for loans borrowed by debt-ridden Sahaviriya Steel Industries Plc (SSI) and its loss-making subsidiary SSI UK after it defaulted. The 12.5% rise in net interest income to B21.6bn for the three months to September helped earnings, though KTB’s net non-interest income fell by 17.3% year-on-year to B5.59bn. KTB’s gross non-per-

Clearing the books of bad debts, now called ‘impairment charges’, has boosted the bottom line for many banks. forming loans (NPLs) surged by 28.9% year-on-year to B98.4bn in September. Its gross NPL ratio jumped to 4.2% at the end of last month from 3.2% in December. Corporate, small-business and retail loans, as well as the decline in KTB’s loans outstanding, contributed to the NPL upsurge. KTB’s total loans dropped by almost 6% to B1.9trn at the end of September. For the first nine months, the bank’s earnings shot up 14.4% yearon-year to B24.84bn. On the opposite end, TMB

Bank was the worst performer in the third quarter. Its unreviewed consolidated net profit plunged 34% year-on-year to B1.85bn as larger loan-loss provisions took a bite out of earnings. The bank set aside B2.54bn in provisions for the period, up from B820mn a year earlier. Bangkok Bank, Thailand’s largest lender by assets, was the only bank among the big four that saw earnings dip. It posted a 11% year-on-year fall in unreviewed consolidated net profit for the period. Bangkok Post thephuketnews

Myanmar’s largest city Yangon neuters many of its stray dogs Caroline Henshaw editor1@classactmedia.co.th

T

he dart hits a fleeing street dog in the thigh, the bright orange tip sagging against his brown and white fur as he slows to a halt, his limbs succumbing to the sedatives. The mutt is one of more than 100,000 strays that roam the streets of Myanmar’s commercial capital Yangon, sleeping in doorways, nosing through rubbish and barking their challenges to each other late into the night. He is actually one of the lucky ones – the sedated animal is among several hundred that will be vaccinated and neutered during a three-month city campaign in Yangon’s southern Lanmadaw township. Loved by some and loathed by others, local authorities have for years tried to contain the swelling packs of

dogs by feeding them poisoned meat. But animal rights activists, including Phuket’s own Soi Dog Foundation, have lobbied the government to change tack, arguing that the killings do little to contain the population or stop the spread of rabies. As the drugs kick in, a worker muzzles the limp dog and ties his paws together with twine. He is carried to a makeshift operating table outside, where he is swiftly dealt with by a vet and placed next to several other sleeping dogs. Later, the animals will be released back onto the streets with red collars. “I love the dogs,” said local resident Moe Lwe Lwe, who has been feeding them rice and curry for 18 years and helps with the sterilisation program. “They are very cuddly. I am nuts for them.” Myanmar has the second-highest rate of rabies in Southeast Asia, according to the World Health Organisa-

Some say authorities dislike neutering because of the belief held by Buddhists, the religious majority in Myanmar, that karmic retribution will leave you infertile in your next life. Leaving poisoned meat, on the other hand, is seen as free of spiritual consequences because the dogs opt to eat the food on their own. Others say sterilisation is an expensive option for a country where one-in-four people live below the poverty line. But images of dog corpses strewn across the city’s pavements spread on social media have shocked the public. In response, Yangon officials signed an agreement with US animal NGO

It’s estimated that 100,000 stray dogs inhabit the streets of Yangon. Humane Society International and Phuket’s Soi Dog Foundation in March to begin a city-wide vaccination and sterilisation scheme. The joint-program has yet to get started, but the charity said it hopes to emulate the success of similar campaigns in countries like Nepal, India and Bangladesh. Other animal-lovers like Terryl Just, an American who founded the Yangon Animal Shelter which cares for some 500 rescued dogs, argue the animals could become a tourist draw for the city. “We’ve adopted some out to the States – LA, Seattle, Washington, California – to people who have visited Yangon,” she said. Dogs rescued from certain death in China

L Lady on her way home with her new owner.

ady would have been easy to grab. A friendly family pet, she approached the dog snatchers readily, her tail wagging, her eyes trusting. In an instant, she was flung into a tiny rusting cage, shoved on top of several other terrified dogs. She was still wearing her collar. In June of this year, China’s annual Yulin dog meat festival again took place, involving the theft of thousands of dogs, many of them

pets, to be brutally tortured and slaughtered for their meat. Again, dog lovers around the world took to social media to decry the slaughter, but some took it a step further. This year, many hundreds of dogs were rescued. But suffering from horrendous injuries and malnutrition as a result of their ordeal, most of them didn’t make it. With no adequate facilities to care for such a huge number of dogs, the majority died

soon after their rescue. This is the story of the ones who survived. These desperate dogs await your help. As you read this, over 70 rescued dogs are being cared for in a makeshift shelter in the city of Nanning, China. Each of these dogs already has an adopter or foster home waiting in the US and we desperately need to get them there. The situation for these dogs still in China is critical. The dog meat industry is a year-round business in a country with no animal welfare laws. Each of these rescued dogs has been offered a safe haven in the US but they need urgent help to get there. It costs approximately $1,900 (B66,420) to ship one dog to safety, and Soi Dog Foundation is determined to get them all out. Lady is one of the lucky ones. She now lives in the US, with one of the resolute volunteers who rescued her from that crude metal cage. The rest of her days will be spent running free at the Californian vineyard that is her home, her tail wagging, her eyes trusting once more. For more information visit: soidog. org

The rescued dogs are still stuck in China.

Thai tattoos: Not just skin deep

The spiritual and magical art of traditional Thai tattoos - Sak Yant SIRINYA’S WORLD Dr Sirinya Pakditawan pakditawan@googlemail.com

T

he custom of tattooing has a long history in Thailand and traditional tattoos here are generally divided into two categories – those for loving-kindness (metta) and those for invulnerability and empowerment. These Sak Yant tattoos are part of Thai magic and not for beautification. The term Sak Yant is a combination of Sak, the Thai word for tattoo, and Yantra, the Sanskrit word for a mystical diagram. Sak Yant is an ancient magical and spiritual practice which employs Buddhist, Brahmin and animist imagery. In particular, Wat Bang Phra in Nakhom Pathom province is well-known for the Yantra tattooing done by monks living at the temple. During March each year there is a tattoo festival at Wat Bang Phra where devotees come to perform a wai khru (paying homage to one’s teacher) ceremony to re-invigorate the magical power of their tattoos. Tattoos for loving-kindness are said to enhance the feeling of benevolence and kindness towards others and simultaneously instill in others the same feelings to oneself. Tattoo motifs for loving-kindness include: The swan – the vehicle of the great God Brahma (Phra Prom) which promises liberation from worldly bondage. The turtle – since turtles appear to be slow and clumsy, they arouse compassion and pity. Thus, nobody truly wants to harm them. The house lizard – said to warn people, and according to Thai beliefs, if one hears the cry of a house lizard when about to leave the house it is recommend not to go because something awful might happen.

Mythical designs help protect the wearer. Photo: Yashi Wong

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Many Sak Yant artisits still use traditional methods and shun modern tattoo guns. Photo: Evan Blaser The mynah bird – the common mynah bird is sometimes tattooed on the tongue, since its song is enchanting and causes those who hear it to experience great joy. The Buddha – since the Buddha is an enlightened being, he feels compassion and loving-kindness towards all living creatures. The tattoos for invulnerability and power (Sak Yant) have been selected for the intrinsic power that they represent. These characteristics may be fierceness, speed, strength, wisdom, cunning or endurance. The tattoos are said to protect the wearer from bullets, knifes and other weapons. In particular, people who work in high risk occupations like soldiers, police, taxi and tuk-tuk drivers like to wear these kinds of tattoos. Such tattoos for invulnerability are also highly sought after by people with a criminal background such as gang members and convicts. But these days the practice of yantra tattooing is very popular both with Thai people and Westerners. However, some Thai people think that Westerners fail to appreciate the true meaning and spirituality of the Sak Yant. Tattoos for invulnerability include: The dragon – representing fearlessness, strength and wisdom. The king cobra – a fearless venomous snake that will attack rather than retreat. The eel – represents the ability to escape because it is very slippery and hard to catch. Hanuman – the monkey god from the Ramakien is known for having powers of invulnerability from the god Shiva. The tiger and the mythical lion – they represent cunning, strength and fierceness. The toad – the toad is supposed to be a robust animal since it has coarse skin.

A Thai tattoo master is called ajarn (teacher) which is a title of respect. He is different from other tattooists because he is most often a Buddhist monk and knows the magic of the symbols, figures, cabalistic signs and incantations of power. It is also important to note that each tattoo has a “heart” wherein its power lies. Only the tattooist knows the location of the heart of the tattoo. Incantations of power are often reduced to a few letters or even numbers. Hence, each tattoo master knows which verse is represented by the particular groups of letters. Thus, their power is protected. Summing up, we may claim that the art of Thai tattoos is both spiritual and traditional. However, today Yantra tattooing has become an international phenomenon and there are also places in Western countries that offer these kind of tattoos. Nevertheless, people should not forget about the origin and spiritual and “magical” meaning of Sak Yant. ave you recently upgraded to a new iPhone or Android and now have no idea what to do with your old smartphone? Instead of letting your old smartphone sit on a shelf and collect dust, check out some of these clever and inventive ways to recycle that phone and put it to good use.

1. Turn your old smartphone into an E-Reader

Is the screen from your old smartphone still in good shape? If the answer is yes, why not turn it into a dedicated E-Reader? All that needs to be done is download apps such as Amazon Kindle or Google Play Books and you will be able to read books on your old device.

2. Set up a Skype station

Drones to map Plain of Jars

A

ustralian archaeologists announced plans on Oct 19 to recreate Laos’ mysterious Plain of Jars as a threedimensional virtual reality experience, that could one day see museum visitors walk through remote dig sites. The Plain of Jars, in Laos’ central Xieng Khouang province, is scattered with thousands of stone vessels but scientists have yet to discover their original purpose. Archaeologists have struggled to access the jar sites, many of which have yet to be cleared of unexploded mines and bombs dropped on the country during the Vietnam War. But Australian researchers now say that their use of drones, which capture 3D images every 10cm, would allow them to explore sites like these that cannot be assessed in traditional ways. “The potential, especially for places like Laos where there’s a serious UXO (Unexploded Ordnance) problem, is that using remote technology to explore and map archaeological sites is incredibly useful,” said Dougald O’Reilly from the Australian National University’s (ANU) School of Archaeology. “It decreases the danger of working in these places.” Besides deploying drones to capture 3D images, O’Reilly said archaeologists were looking at using multispectral cameras which can capture light from invisible frequencies such as infrared radiation, and airborne laser scanning technology known as lidar to create centimetre-accurate maps. The technology could ultimately be used for museums, allowing visitors to wear a headset and walk around the site. “For museum applications, this is an amazing tool especially remote museums that are not at the site. So you can create this environment where people feel they are walking among the monuments in that three-dimensional context,” O’Reilly said. “It’s pretty amazing in that regard. When you are in the facility... it’s absolutely breathtaking actually. The experience is quite overwhelming.” Earlier this year researchers uncovered ancient human remains and various burial practices at the Plain of Jars as part of the first major effort since the 1930s to try to understand the purpose of the vessels and who created them. You can download a variety of apps that can turn your old smartphone into a universal remote control. The most useful apps for appliances, such as Anymote Universal Remote, require your phone to have an infra-red blaster (HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S6, LG G3) to control IR devices like TVs and stereos. But even if your phone doesn’t have IR you can download several apps

Smartphones are great for storing recipes and watching cooking videos on YouTube, however, a kitchen can be a dangerous place for a brand new device. Turn your old smartphone into a kitchen command centre and use your old device to download apps such as How to Cook Everything to guide you through the process of making a big dinner or even simple snacks. Just because your old smartphone isn’t the latest or greatest doesn’t mean it can’t still be put to good use. These ideas are a few great examples of how to put your old smartphone to good use even after its trendy shelf life has expired. HM King Bhumibol – The Great Traveller

For His Majesty, travelling was always part of his efforts to improve his subjects’ quality of life

T

ravelling is known as a way to enrich one’s life. But that was not the case for one of the country’s most well-travelled people, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. During most of the past seven decades that this country was blessed with the exceptional monarch, Thais have been used to seeing TV news reports on the journeys of the beloved late King to different parts of the country. His destinations, however, were never tourist attractions, lavish restaurants or posh hotels, the kind of places many people like to show off on social media. Nai Luang, the intimate and popular term that King Bhumibol was often referred to by his grateful subjects, travelled to places with problems, visiting countless rural villages across Thailand. He braved the scorching sun, heavy rain and difficult terrain to remote and hard-to-reach areas, including battlefields during the armed conflicts with Communists, which took place in the late ’60s to the early ’80s, to learn first-hand about people’s plights from the people themselves. His camera was not for taking selfies but for reference photos. His maps were not just for finding direction, but for him to get a detailed picture of the area so that he could come up with the most suitable and sustainable solution to the issues in each location, be they the lack of rain, water and soil quality, flood prevention, lack of medical care or other problems. The water people use, the food we eat, from farm products to fish, many things that have long been taken for granted, can be attributed to Nai Luang. If a village was inaccessible by car and helicopter was the only option, King Bhumibol would have the aircraft land a couple of kilometres from the village, and he would continue on foot. The reason was that he did not want the strong wind from the powerful rotors to cause damage to the poor people’s homes. His Royal life was not one full of glitz, luxury and pampering but one that was down to earth, benevolent and hard working, often spent in harsh conditions. The old photos on this page give you just a glimpse at the King’s 70 years of dedicated hard work. He did it not to win votes; he never needed it. But rather he was determined to keep the promise he publicly made to “reign with righteousness for the benefits and happiness of the people of Siam (Thailand)”. Despite his position and ability to go for a vacation anywhere in the world, King Bhumibol, who spent much of his childhood and adolescent years in the West, never travelled away from his Kingdom and his people during the past five decades, except for a brief visit to neighbouring Laos for the opening ceremony of the first Thai-Laos Friendship Bridge in 1994. For him, travelling seemed to be just a part of his tireless effort to improve the quality of life of the people in the Kingdom, regardless of their

Knowledge from the station enables hill tribes people to develop their farms. A short drive from the station, close to the Thailand-Myanmar border is Nor Lae Village, where big plantations of strawberry are set among a magnificent view of the scenery. Besides Kiu Lom Viewpoint, which is a scenic spot to enjoy the sunrise and sunset, there are many nature trails tourists can roam to experience the stunning nature of the mountain, which are dotted with small but beautiful waterfalls and Rhododendron blossoms during the cool season. A number of bird species can be spotted in Ang Khang. The best places are at the Mae Phoe forest station and around Ang Khang Natural Resort. races or religions, from hill tribes to urbanites. It is not by coincidence or out of hand tribute that King Bhumibol has been regarded as King Bhumibol the Great since 1987, after 41 years on the throne. Unlike in Western countries, in Thailand the title reflects the immense love and gratitude that Thai people feel towards certain monarchs rather than their successes in wars. King Bhumibol was one of only seven Royal rulers in Thai history since the beginning of the Sukhothai Period almost eight centuries ago who were conferred such an honour. Three decades on, until the ailing final years of his life, King Bhumibol the Great has proven that the well-earned title was never tarnished. It was not a secret that even while under medical care at Siriraj Hospital, he also had his patient’s room turned into a working station where water levels in the Chao Phraya and other rivers were closely monitored. For a lot of Thais it’s still difficult to accept that Nai Luang has passed on. Still, his legacy is virtually everywhere. The Royal Projects – which peacefully and successfully eradicated once sporadic opium cultivation by replacing it with cold climate fruits and vegetables – are among the nu-

merous places throughout the Kingdom where people can visit to learn about the inspiring life and works of this Royal role model. The Royal Projects featured above are just a few examples.

Bhumibol Dam

One of the popular tourist attractions in Tak, Bhumibol Dam is about 60km north of the city. The dam is known as the country’s first arch dam on the Ping River in Sam Ngao district. Originally called Yanhee Dam in 1951 when the government of former Prime Minister Field Marshal Plaek Pibulsongkram initiated the project, it was renamed Bhumibol Dam in 1957. It took about 13 years for construction to be completed, in 1964, at a cost of B3.5 billion. The dam is 154mhigh and 468m-long. It can store 13,462 million cubic metres of water, making it the second largest dam in terms of water storage capacity in the country, after Srinagarind Dam in Kanchanaburi. The multipurpose dam is built for irrigation and generating 779MW of electricity annually and has an eight-turbine capacity. According to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat), which manages the dam, in the past 50 years about 27

million people have visited the dam. Activities include picnics, biking, taking a short boat ride to attractions inside the reservoir including Koh Valentine, Wat Phra Phutthabat Khao Nam, which is a temple atop an isle where visitors are treated to a panoramic view of the reservoir. Also available is the 153km-long cruise from the dam to Doi Tao district in Chiang Mai. For those who want to stay overnight at the dam, accommodation is provided by Egat or raft houses of private operators. Call Egat on 055-881211 or visit: bhumiboldam.egat.com

Chang-Hua-Mun Project

The latest Royal Initiative Project of His Majesty the King was Chang-Hua-Mun, meaning “weighing a yam”, and also The Matter Initiative, in Phetchaburi province. Aimed at teaching people about the approaches to sufficiency agriculture and economy, the project is a learning centre for farmers and an alliance with the public sector and local people. It was started in 2009 by His Majesty after he had left a yam on an old weighing scale in his Klai Kangwon Palace, Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan, and

the yam developed into a sapling. After purchasing an infertile 250-rai in Tambon Khao Krapook, Tha Yang district, His Majesty transformed the plot into an experimental farm, which initially had experimental yam and local economic crop plantations. He also suggested the project focus on the agricultural industry in accordance with market demands. The project now consists of a dairy farm, economic crops plantations, an organic vegetable farm, organic rice fields, a milk factory, an egg chicken farm, a plant seeds gathering centre, an organic fertiliser unit, an alternative fuel production plant, windmills for electricity generation, knowledgesharing sessions, a crop cultivation development unit, a soil improvement exhibition, a reservoir and a supermarket for selling farm produce. A wide variety of crops ranging from Thai, Japanese and Penang yam to dragon fruit, Phetchaburi rose apple and rubber trees are grown here. It is not an overstatement to say that this project is the Father’s Farm and proof of sustainable agriculture, a sufficiency economy, local intellect development and the unity and best efforts of all parties to work together and show their love and loyalty to His Majesty.

Located about 200km from Bangkok, Chang-Hua-Mun Project is open daily from 9am-4pm. Farm tours are provided all day and last about 30 minutes each. Admission fee is B20 for adults and B10 for children per head, per visit. Call 032-472701.

Doi Ang Khang

Once covered with opium plantations, Doi Ang Khang, in Fang district of Chiang Mai, today is the home of an impressive agricultural project. Ang Khang Royal Agricultural Station is the first research station of the Royal Project. It was established in 1969. The station is a demonstration site for planting and researching flowering plants, temperate fruit trees, vegetables and other crops under the patronage of His Majesty King Bhumibol. The valley of Ang Khang has a temperate climate, which is perfect for opium farming. But His Majesty the King saw beyond this cash crop, and spent his personal money to buy a piece of land and developed the research station here. Today, Doi Ang Khang is filled with beautiful farms and garden of temperate-climate flowers. The station’s club serves impressive dishes made from ingredients harvested from the project itself.

Dairy farming is indeed a legacy of His Majesty the King who introduced to it to Thailand over five decades ago. The ThaiDanish Dairy Farm and Training Centre in Saraburi’s Muak Lek district is the country’s first dairy farm and a Royal Initiative Project of His Majesty. It holds much importance for agriculture and agro-tourism in Thailand. The farm is the brainchild of Their Majesties the King of Thailand and King Frederick IX of Denmark after the King and Queen of Thailand visited Denmark in 1960. According to the Dairy Farming Promotion Organisation of Thailand (DPO), His Majesty had a keen interest in Denmark’s dairy farming because he foresaw that dairy farming would allow Thais to consume nutritious food and become a sustainable occupation for Thai farmers. On January 16, 1962, His Majesty the King and the visiting King Frederick IX of Denmark inaugurated the Thai-Danish dairy. Located on land plots covering 2,700 rai on both sides of Mittraphap Rd, the centre has a lot for visitors to experience. Activities range from visiting grass fields and forests to milking cows. Visitors can enjoy sightseeing, fresh mountain air and a onehour or 2.5-hour farm tour to learn about dairy farming. At present, there are more than 400 milk cows at this farm. Most of them are Jersey cows, which yield 15kg of milk per day each. The farm buys 600 tons of raw milk out of a total 2,800 tons of raw milk that is produced nationwide, and accounts for only 48% of the total demand. Located about 140km from Bangkok, the farm is open daily with farm tours starting at 9am, 10am, 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Fees per head, per visit are B120 for adults, B100 for university students (group visit), B70 for children and young students and free of charge for toddlers. Email agrotour@ dpo.go.th or call the centre on 036-344-926. Bangkok Post

Transcending your grief

In this time of national bereavement, peace and moral support is needed for all Arusa Pisuthipan editor1@classactmedia.co.th

I

t has been two weeks since the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, but a lot of Thais still shed tears every time they see his image on television or elsewhere. In a time like this, coping with the loss of the beloved is easier said than done. As the nation mourns the revered King, some are more psychologically affected by sorrow than others. Two days after his death, a medical team from the Department of Mental Health under the Ministry of Public Health visited Sanam Luang to check on people who travelled to pay their respects to the late King. Of the more than 260 reported to have sought psychological consultation and treatment from medics, 71 were found to have suffered overbreathing and a high level of stress. Three people were diagnosed as being at risk of depression. Director-general of the Department of Mental Health Dr Boonruang Triruangworawat has said publicly that in order for the whole country to survive such a great loss, all citizens should be encouraged to express their anguish through rites and ceremonies, as well as activities that positively contribute

To cope with grief, the Department of Mental Health encourages all Thais to express their sorrow through rites and ceremonies. Photo: Wason Wanichakorn to emotional healing, such as meritmaking. Most importantly, people must not let themselves be so engulfed by despair that they see no way out of the heartbreak. Psychologist Prof Dr Kavi Suvarnakich echoed this opinion. For citizens to get through this, emotional support is imperative. “When a person dies, funeral rites, regardless of religion, will automatically lessen stress and sadness,” said

Dr Kavi. “When we attend funerals, we listen to sermons and get to understand uncertainty. We talk, share mutual feelings and console one another. Most funerals are not one-day activities.” According to Dr Kavi, grief is in fact the natural response to loss. “This leads to sorrow and melancholy,” said the psychiatrist, explaining the mechanism of grief. “We feel sad because the bond we’ve long created suddenly vanishes. It’s like we hold on

to something and suddenly there is no longer something to hold on to. We feel lost and aimless.” There are roughly five stages of grief. The first is denial. Refusing to believe the reality of the situation is the immediate response to shock. The second stage is anger. “People get mad after a loss, and find something or someone to shoulder responsibility. Some tend to harm themselves as if in the end they think they themselves are to blame. Feeling worthless is one form of anger. This can result in suicide,” said Dr Kavi. After anger subsides, people usually make some bargain – a reaction in order to regain control over things. Some go so far as to make a vow with gods that if the situation turns better, they will do this or that in return. Sadness is the final stage, and takes place after people start to realise and accept that the loss of the beloved is real. At this stage, the feelings are fully expressed through crying, screaming or frantic actions. In the end of the whole grieving process, it is the stage of acceptance. “To cope with loss, in the end we console ourselves and try to adjust to situations. We think positively and often engage in constructive activities for the sake of the dead.”

New Assoc proposed Aims to make fishing, boating more accessible FISHING

CAST AWAY Ket from Wet Dreams will be hoping to score big in this week’s game against Genius Bar. Photo: Scott Griffin

One point separates 1Bar, Wet Dreams POOL W ITH ON LY 2 W EEKS left to play in the Patong Pool League there is only one point separating title contenders 1Bar and Wet Dreams who sit on 151 and 150 points respectively. In last week’s round of the league, 1Bar played at home against Simon and Oils and walked away with a comfortable 9-2 win, while Wet Dreams played away to Champs Bar and also took home a 9-2 win. Elsewhere, Dirty Nellies had their first win in a month with a 7-4 win over Ting Tong. Genius got a 8-3 win at home against Sports Bar, while Natalie Bar got a good 9-2 win away from home against Min Bar (formerly M&M) moving them up to 5th in the table and now only one point away from 3rd place. It was Martin Swiss turn to pick up the automatic 11 points last week as they were set to play Amigo who have

dropped out of the league. So in this week’s penultimate games, Wet Dreams are set to play at home against Genius and 1Bar are away to Natalie, while in the final round to be played on Nov 3, Wet Dreams will be away to Dirty Nellies, and 1Bar will play at home against Sports Bar. The way things are going it looks like the title will not be decided until the final week of action. So who will walk away as Patong Pool League champions for the 2016 season? Matt Pond

ell shipmates that’s another month of OTT weather, but on the few occasions the boats went out reports were that the Sailfish were still in abundance, and one boat claimed a triple hook-up with two released and one lost just off the stern. As boat owner/operators are continually asked about boat sharing, which in the past most advised against due to certain companies going well above the recommended maximum of four/five for serious fishing, a new idea is doing the rounds, which proposes a “non-profit” fishing and boating association dedicated to making Big Game Fishing, and boating in general, more accessible and affordable especially to our expat community, their friends and those who are travelling to Phuket alone, or in small groups. There would be three types of associates: 1. The visitor/tourist - is free and the association would offer boats at a heavily discounted “boat sharing” price in association with some of our many local afishinados.

The M.V. Thai 2 On liveaboard fishing charter. 2. Expat - is also free although it would require an up-front B2,000 refundable deposit/bond to cover any and all trips. 3. Boat owner/operator - would be a five per cent finder’s fee for all trips organised by the association; this would cover set-up fees and incidental expenses. What the Mena “budget” boats propose to offer probably best describes how the system would work and explains their subsidies toward the association’s goal of reducing everyone’s costs: Mena 2 and 3 propose charging 50% of their web site price to the tourist clients and guarantee that if even only “one” expat registers to go, the boat will still leave on the proposed date. They also confirm there would be a maximum of three expats

on the boat, (the other 50%) as they believe any more than four/five fishing is too many. Mena 1 would be the same, except being a more expensive boat, it would be four maximum for expats, again when there is only “one” expat available the company will subsidise the balance and the boat will still sail. Other owner/operators would be welcome to participate with their own “specials”, which would be run through a dedicated internet site where participants could be introduced to each other via social media in advance of booking a trip. Any helpful observations or input to this proposed idea would be greatly appreciated, so please send in your views as we continue to consolidate our thinking.

STOP PRESS Burma Banks. The Burma Banks has some of the best “bill” fishing on the planet, up there in the top 10 “must visit” for any fisherman. M.V. Thai 2 On intends to work out of Ranong, Thailand in February and March 2017 doing weekly charters in this 400 square mile underwater plateau where trolling and jigging is often unsurpassed. Leaving Ranong on day one and picking up our obligatory Myanmartian J (Burmese) “guide” at Victoria we head to West Rock and the following five days are spent trolling and jigging the Banks. Day seven back to Ranong via West Rock and Victoria to drop off the guide. So that’s it for this month. Tight lines to all and condolences to all our Thai friends at this sad time.

BISP swimmer bags eight golds SWIMMING

K

imiko Raheem from the British International School, Phuket (BISP) Swim Academy won eight gold medals for her country Sri Lanka at the recent South Asian Aquatic Championship 2016, which concluded at the Colombo Sugathadasa Swimming Pool last Saturday (Oct 22). All South Asian countries took part in the four day event, except Afghanistan and Bhutan. Champions India were represented by 53 swimmers who took part in 191 events. Hosts Sri Lanka were the runners-up winning 28 gold, 66 silver and 95 bronze medals, with Rio Olympian Kimiko winning five gold in individual events – the

Nicholle Toh.

A fellow Sri Lankan swimmer with BISP Swim Academy member Kimiko Raheem (left). 200 metre freestyle, 100m freestyle, 200m backstroke, 50m freestyle, and 100m Backstroke – and three golds in the relays. BISP Head Coach Colin Braund said, “Kimiko has shown that she has adapted

well to training in a different environment here at BISP. “Although the meet was not a major focus for the season, she has posted times not far from her best which is always pleasing as a coach to see a swimmer perform well while

in the midst of heavy training. “We must now turn our focus on getting her fully prepared for the upcoming World Short Course championships in December,” he said. Meanwhile, BISP swimmer Nicholle Toh took bronze in the women’s 200m butterfly at the recent Singapore leg of the FINA Swimming World Cup, finishing third behind three-time Olympic champion Katinka Hosszú of Hungary.

In front of an 1,800 strong crowd at the OCBC Aquatic Centre last Saturday night (Oct 22), the 15-year-old member of the BISP Swim Academy set a new Singaporean national record of 2min 11.26sec, which beat a time that had stood for 16 years. Nicholle’s bronze medal was the only one won by the 29 member Singapore swim team at the two-day meet. In an interview with the city’s Today newspaper after the race, Nicholle said, “I finished third overall after the heats and I was hoping to maintain that position in the final. “But having said that, I was definitely feeling nervous at the start because I was competing against world-class athletes, some of whom have won many Olympic medals and world titles. I was just

glad that I got the chance to race against them.” Back at their aquatic centre in Phuket, coach Colin said, “Nicholle has proven over the last month of racing that she is not afraid of taking on world class senior swimmers and is now posting times of a world class junior swimmer. “She has a big year ahead of her and now must focus on the process of getting herself on to the National team and use the experience she has gained to be a contender at both the World junior Championships and South East Asian Games.” Learn more about the BISP Swim Academy at www.bisphuket.ac.th/swimming, follow them on Facebook at www. facebook.com/swimphuket or email: cbraund@bisphuket. ac.th.

Kiatisak recalls axed Chappuis FOOTBALL IN A QUICK CHANGE OF heart, Thailand coach Kiatisak Senamuang has recalled Suphanburi midfielder Charyl Chappuis for training with the national squad. Kiatisak axed Chappuis from the national teams which face Australia in Thailand’s 5th Group B match of Asia’s final phase of 2018 World Cup qualifiers on Nov 15 and then take part in the AFF Suzuki Cup (Southeast Asian championship), which commences four days later. No reason was given for dropping Thai-Swiss Chappuis from the two teams. Kiatisak on Tuesday (Oct 25) announced that he was

adding four players to the training camp for the Suzuki Cup. They are Natsapol Malaphan (Chonburi), Sivapong Charoensil (Si Sa Ket), Chappuis (Suphanburi) and Jenrop Sampaodi (BEC Tero Sasana). “The reason that we have called up these four players to join the 23-member team named earlier is to create a back-up for the Suzuki Cup,” Kiatisak said. “We are expecting a tough game against the Australians at Rajamangala [National Stadium] in Bangkok. “These World Cup qualifiers are always keenly fought affairs, so there is a big chance of one or more players sustaining injuries. “We just want to have a pool of quality players ready

to join the squad in case there are any injuries to the key players.” Kiatisak added: “Natsapol Malaphan and Sivapong Charoensil have made the national team for the first time and we hope that they will be able to get along well with the other players. “If they do well during training, they can be part of the Suzuki Cup team. “Chappuis and Jenrop have played for the national team so they should not have any problems settling down.” The national team went to Bangkok’s Grand Palace to pay respects to His Majesty the King today (Oct 28) before leaving for their training camp at the Kirin Valley in Khao Yai. Kiatisak, a former national striker, said: “After reporting on Friday morning at the Emerald Hotel, the team and the staff coaches will go to pay their respects to His Majesty the King at the Grand Palace in the afternoon. “We will leave for the Kirin Valley the following day for training and return to Bangkok on Nov 13 for the match against the Australians. We will train at Rajamangala on Nov 14 before the match on Nov 15,” he said. Bangkok Post

N

ew World Superseries Premier title winner Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk says it was his determination to do something for His Majesty the King that led him to his historic success in the Denmark Open last Sunday (Oct 23). “I felt that the King was always with me,” said Tanongsak, who visited Bangkok’s Grand Palace on Tuesday (Oct 25) to pay his respects to His Majesty, who passed away on Oct 13 – coincidentally Tanongsak’s 26th birthday. Tanongsak, who is the only Thai man to win a World Superseries Premier tournament, has been widely appreciated for his decision to hold the King’s portrait aloft and place the Denmark Open winner’s trophy on the floor during the award ceremony. The unseeded Thai defeated sixth-ranked Son Wan-Ho of South Korea 21-13, 23-21 in Sunday’s final. “I put the trophy on the floor because it is not as im-

portant as the portrait of the King,” said Tanongsak. Tanongsak, who won his first Grand Prix Gold title at the Thailand Open earlier this month, said that before leaving for Denmark, he was physically prepared but was deeply saddened by the passing away of the King. “Like all the Thais, I was left bereaved by the death of the King,” Tanongsak said. “I just kept thinking that I need to do my best for the country and also for the King. “Finally, I did it. I am really happy. Every time I play, I always think of the King. “I want to dedicate this win to him. I wanted to come back to pay respects to the King.” After the Denmark Open win, he withdrew from two tournaments in France this week and in Germany next week to return to Thailand to pay his respects to the King. “We will be more committed to do more for the King and the Thais,” said Tanongsak, who ended Thailand’s 38-year men’s singles gold medal drought at the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar. Tanongsak is expected to

move up from 18th to ninth spot in the world rankings and also climb from 26th to 15th place on the Destination Dubai list. He needs to be in the top eight to earn a place at the US$1 million World Superseries Finals in Dubai from Dec 14-18. He has two events to play before the Dubai Finals – the $700,000 China Open from Nov 15-20 and the $400,000 Hong Kong Open the following week. Tanongsak also plans to compete in the All Thailand Open, where the winner receives the King’s trophy, from Nov 28-Dec 3. K hunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the Badminton Association of Thailand, said: “We are planning to approach Misbun Sidek [former Malaysian shuttler] to coach Tanongsak.” Patama on Tuesday presented a photo of the King playing badminton to Tanongsak upon his return from Copenhagen. “This shows how important a role the King played in the development of badminton,” she said.

Four things we learnt in the Premier League L ast weekend was week nine of Premier League action, and Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham

FOOTBALL

No Vardy, no problem for Leicester Following eight games without a goal, and having been dogged by a groin complaint during the week, Jamie Vardy was left on the bench for Leicester City’s home game with Crystal Palace. Benching Vardy, emblem of last season’s fairytale title win, was a gamble by manager Claudio Ranieri, whose side had gone three league matches without victory. But it paid off as goals from Ahmed Musa and Shinji Okazaki, plus a scorching late Christian Fuchs strike, secured a 3-1 win. Vardy entered the fray as a secondhalf substitute, but by that point his team-mates had

Hotspur all dropped points as Chelsea ensured an uncomfortable return to Stamford Bridge for Jose Mourinho with a 4-0

rout of Manchester United. Here are four things we learned from the Premier League last weekend:

Back to drawing board for Mourinho After a run of six matches without defeat in all competitions, Jose Mourinho appeared to be turning a corner with Manchester United, who had lost three games in succession in September. But his team’s recovery came crashing to the ground at Stamford Bridge, home of his former club Chelsea, as United fell to a scarring defeat. A team who appeared to be growing in confidence suddenly looked entirely bereft of it, Chris Smalling and Daley Blind producing error-strewn performances in defence, Paul Pogba turning in a completely anonymous midfield display and Zlatan Ibrahimovic going a sixth league game without finding the net. Manchester United’s manager Jose Mourinho will have to be making more notes after the team’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea. Changes could now follow, with club captain Wayne Rooney and under-used new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan among those pressing for inclusion in the starting XI.

Sturridge faces winter of discontent There was a conspicuous absence as Liverpool’s forwards celebrating the second of their goals in a 2-1 home win over West Bromwich Albion. After volleying in Roberto Firmino’s cross to put Liverpool in front, Sadio Mane freed Philippe Coutinho to double the hosts’ advantage. Mane, Coutinho and Firmino, grins as wide as the River Mersey, celebrated the second goal with a lighthearted dance. Daniel Sturridge’s goal-celebration wiggle used to be a regular sight at Anfield, but he was dropped to the bench as manager Jurgen Klopp recalled the fit-again Adam Lallana to his starting XI. Stones error sign of the times

Daniel Sturridge’s goalcelebration wiggle is not such a regular sight at Anfield this season. Photo: AFP to lead the line and when he turned to his bench for extra firepower in stoppage time it was Divock Origi who was told to get ready. Not for the first time, television cameras caught Sturridge looking nonplussed. A long winter beckons for the England striker.

It appears Manchester City fans may have to get used to the kind of mistake that saw England defender John Stones set up Southampton’s goal in the Premier League leaders’ 1-1 draw when his careless backpass across the face of goal was seized on by Nathan Redmond. With City manager Pep Guardiola determined to play a passing game and the ball-playing Stones often lauded for all aspects of his game except his actual defending, merely clearing the danger will no longer cut it at Eastlands. As Redmond told Sky Sports:

ICC made final in early game, but favourites Patong walked away with the 2016 title CRICKET Paddy Lebedoer & Mark Whetton editor3@classactmedia.co.th

n Sunday (Oct 23), the Alan Cooke Cricket Ground (ACG) played host to the finals of the Outrigger Resorts 2016 T20 competition. The morning match was a play-off between the Laguna Cricket Club (LCC) and Island Cricket Club (ICC) to see who would take on tournament favourite’s the Patong Cricket Club (PCC), who went on to take the title later on in the afternoon. After a lot of overnight and early morning rain, the AGC was in quite a damp state for the day’s proceedings. After a minute’s silence was observed for the recent passing of King Rama IX, LCC won the toss and elected to bat first. Things didn’t get off to a good start for LCC with S Khan being bowled for a duck by A Virdirkar after facing just three balls. S Kumar also took a couple of early wickets to have LCC struggling on 19 runs for 3 wickets after just six overs. Things stabilized for LCC after a couple of decent partnerships were put together, but when A Khan (31) was run out it was felt the writing was on the wall. M Kohler also contributed with the bat with a handy 28 runs, but there was not much assistance from

the rest of the Laguna line-up. However, despite being short a couple of players, LCC managed to put together a modest total of 89 runs, albeit being bowled out in the 15th over, which left the ICC team a target of 90 runs for a win. After a short innings break, ICC went in to bat for what should have been a comfortable win. However, the LCC bowlers bowled a tight line and kept the run rate down to help their chances. Unfortunately, in the 5th over the heavens parted and play was temporarily stopped until conditions improved. At the time ICC were on 20 runs for the loss of two wickets. Play resumed after about 20 minutes which meant the Duckworth/ Lewis system was implemented which reduced the ICC innings to 15 overs and chasing a revised target of 40 runs for a win. The ICC lads must have become nervous during the rain delay as upon resumption of the match a steady stream of wickets fell despite only needing 20 runs from the remaining 10.2 overs. However, a slight shortage of players, and not being able to bat out their entire allotment of 20 overs in their innings came back to haunt the LCC team and ICC passed the target in just the 9th over for the loss of six wickets, thereby meaning they moved forward to face PCC in the Final. With the semi-final decided, ICC were now through to take on

table toppers Patong Cricket Club (PCC) in the afternoon Final. As per the morning match, both teams took to the field for a well observed moment of silence to pay their respects for the passing of Thailand’s much loved King. It was ICC who won the toss and put PCC in to bat first. S Wetherall (51) and A Runhaar (12) were given the job of opening the batting, whilst A Virdikar (0-21-4) and S Kumar (1-33-4) opened the bowling. With a pretty uneventful first five overs, neither side looked to be gaining the upper hand with no wickets being taken and the score at 32. The first bowling change came in the 6th over with D Mydeen being brought into the attack, and he was rewarded on his 2nd ball when he took the wicket of Runhaar. To the crease came P Ledeboer (34) who looked a little nervous playing in his first final at the ACG. He took time to get off the mark and was dropped on several occasions, but he eventually settled down and helped the scoreboard tick over. The last two overs before drinks were bowled by P Borkar (0-27-4) and Vaiganker (0-8-1), and at the break PCC were 75-1. After drinks PCC continued to score as freely as they could, and just after scoring his half century Wetherall was bowled by Kumar in the 14th over. In form H Jordaan (26 N/O), who was now in the

middle, continued to bat like he has all season not giving any chances away and scoring runs. But Ledeboer was next to fall being caught in the covers with the score at 115-3. With four overs left in the innings, S Hamilton (19) joined Jordaan and between the pair they piled on a 45 run partnership, including some big sixes, with Hamilton being caught on the last ball of the innings leaving PCC at 160-4. With eight runs per over needed, ICC needed to come out fighting and it was up to M Khan (5) and Vaiganker (6) to try and put the pressure on S Raju (1-19-4) and H McDonald (2-11-4), but it was the PCC bowlers who turned up the heat going for only 19 runs in the first four overs. Vaiganker fell first caught behind off Rajus’ bowling. McDonald picked up his first wicket in the next over bowling Mydeen (0) and then his second shortly after with Khan caught behind. With S Kandolkar (20) and Kumar (15) now batting, N Quail (1-17-2) and A Van Blerk (0-12-1) finished off the overs before drinks. ICC were at 52-3. In the first over after drinks, Kandolkar was caught by Raju racing in from the deep at square leg. Runhaar (1-13-3) picked up the wicket of new batsman B Desai (0) with some decent swing bowling that the batsmen were finding hard to hit.

Wetherall, (2-15-3) now bowling from the other end, got his first wicket, that of Kumar caught by Runhaar. 13 overs down and ICC were 73-6 and now facing an uphill battle. Wetherall later took the wicket of A Kalakar (4), stumped after coming down the wicket only to be left stranded. Hamilton came on in the 19th over to bag two caught and bowled, G Shirodkar (6) and V Tiwari (0). Jordaan (1-0-0.1) was brought on to bowl the last over, but he only needed one ball to bowl out A Virdikar (13) to end ICCs innings. ICC were all out for 106 which meant PCC were crowned the Outrigger T20 2016 champions. Next on the agenda for the Phuket Cricket Group (PCG) are three incoming tours from Bangkok and Singapore during the first three weeks of November. There will then be a short break before the resumption of cricket sometime in the New Year. The PCG are always looking for new players and officials to assist with the running of cricket on the island.
