I

t was a day that the Kingdom had been preparing itself for since a little over one year ago, and it will be a day that will be remembered by the generation who witnessed it for the rest of their lives, and its memory will be passed down to the many generations to follow. On Thursday (Oct 26), the people

of Thailand gathered en masse in their respective provinces to bid a final farewell to the “Father of the Nation”, the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej who passed away at 3:52pm on Thursday Oct 13, 2016. Thursday’s Royal Cremation ceremony began at 7am when the Royal Urn was taken from the Dusit Maha Prasart Throne Hall within the Grand Palace to the Great Victory Chariot in front of

Wat Phra Chetuphon, and then on to the ceremonial ground at Sanam Luang – the location of the ornate Royal Crematorium. Gilded chariots, horses and columns of military personnel in bright costumes swept through Bangkok’s old quarter in a meticulously-planned spectacle of devotion to a King who was loved, adored and revered by so many. Guided by long-standing Bud-

dhist ritual and Royal Palace protocol, the elaborate Royal Cremation ceremony was befitting of a King who commanded the unwavering devotion of his subjects during his 70-year reign. The ceremony featured mass parades, cultural performances and Buddhist ceremonies centred around the gleaming funeral complex that has been erected outside Bangkok’s Grand Palace according to Royal

traditions dating back hundreds of years. Onlookers marvelled at the rich array of ceremonial uniforms on display – from puffy blue helmets to embroidered red caps and pointy white hats – as marchers beating drums and bearing tiered umbrellas strode solemnly through Bangkok’s historic heart. “Officials had to study and work very hard to manage this event,...

A nation’s historic farewell

Kingdom unites to bestow final honours on their beloved King Continued from page 1 ...because it is the first time our generation has prepared for a King’s funeral,” 54-year-old Rataya Kobsikarn said in the days leading up to the event. “All of us love our King so much and this is the last chance we have to be close to him,” she added. As has been the case for the entire year following King Bhumibol’s death, almost every Thai wore black, draining colour from Bangkok’s streets in public display of the nation’s collective grief. Furthermore, a strict dress codes for the Royal Funeral was decreed for the public and officials to follow during the historic funeral. “Ceremonies for the King are still viewed as ceremonies for a demi-god,” explained Eakkarak Limsunggas, a police commander tasked with enforcing proper funeral attire. “The language and dress code used for the monarchy

Royal guards in uniform march during a dress rehearsal for the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s funeral. Photo: Roberto Schmidt / AFP must be different than what we use in normal life.” Boosted by the late King’s charisma and abiding love for all his subjects, Thailand’s monarchy grew in it’s popularity with the public during King Bhumibol’s reign and the palace revived several royal rituals that had remained unobserved by some of the monarchs who preceded King

Bhumibol’s reign. Many Thais will continue to refer to King Bhumibol as the “Father of the Nation” and were moved to tears at the prospect of bidding him a final goodbye as his spirit ascends back to heaven. However, not only Thais have spoken about their sadness at the death of King Bhumibol, many expatiates living in the

Kingdom have expressed their respect for the late King and the admirable legacy he has left to his people. Matthew Thomas, an Australian who’s lived in Thailand for the past five years, also felt the significance of such a momentous moment in Thailand’s history. “I think it has brought the community together,” he said.

“People [connect] through this one experience; showing respect by wearing the appropriate coloured clothes or not having parties or celebrations,” he said. M r T homas says the mourning period following the King’s passing caused him to learn a lot more about the late monarch’s many contributions to Thai society. “I knew about some of it before he passed away, but learned a lot more afterwards,” he said. Mr Thomas spoke specifically about the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s efforts to eradicate the drug trade in the “Golden Triangle” through agricultural practices, such as growing profitable alternative crops to steer farmers away from cultivating narcotic plants. Kate Bailey, a New Zealander, said that the period of mourning has reminded her of her host country’s unique

culture and history. “It has this incredible historical legacy and ceremonial culture that I think most expats would only ever scrape the surface of unless they are deeply involved with Thai people,” she said. “It is a unique nation with its own emotional priorities and resonance that is not like any other place.” As for foreigners who are new to Thailand, Ms Bailey hopes they will take time to understand the late King’s legacy and Thai culture. “I hope that they would actually learn a little bit about the King’s life works,” she said. “If [foreigners] are just here on holiday or are just passing through professionally, I think it would behove them to try and see the culture as a very multifaceted thing. The side that you see as a tourist is only really the tip of the iceberg.”

53-year old Australian man who rescued a Chinese man and a ‘rescue official’ from Rawai municipality at Nai Harn Beach on October 17 contacted The Phuket News following the incident to give his comments on the incident. Referring to himself only as “Rick” from the ‘Mojo’ sailboat, the man told The Phuket News of the incident, wanting to highlight that he should not have been forced into the position to carry out the rescue. Rick was forced to come to the rescue last Tuesday to safely bringing back to shore a Chinese tourist in distress

“I’m 53 years old myself. I was so exhausted by the time I got back to shore, I had to stop to recover as well. There should have been lifeguards on duty who knew how to respond. “There has to be lifeguards. If I wasn’t there, both of the people I saved would have died,” he said. “I had just parked my motorbike at Nai Harn Beach. I heard someone shouting out ‘help’, but thought it was some kids playing or joking, because no one was doing anything,” he explained. “There were red f lags, and even I could see there was a rip tide. “There was a lifeguard tent but no lifesaver in it, and a lot of younger people

sitting on deck chairs simply watched on,” he said. “Eventually, I thought if I didn’t do something, both of them will drown. I have been a surfer for most of my life so I went out to the water and brought back both the Asian man, I think he was Chinese, and the ‘rescue worker’. “My wife also helped,” he added. “The Chinese man was just about dead… I thought he was going to die. He was in and out of consciousness, but I never heard what happened to him after I saw him into the ambulance. “The ‘rescue official’ had swum out but did not know how to use the paddle board,” he concluded.

Head of the project Mr Somkiet Srikonkaew of the Phuket Highways Department confirmed to The Phuket News last week that, “both land owners, at both of the locations do not want the construction of the U-turns. “Right now, I cannot say whether construction will continue or not. But we have filed a legal appeal to Bangkok,” he added. “The appeal was sent a few months ago already. It is expected to take not less than another six months, however, it could take up to one year,” he added. “We tried to convince the owners of all of the advantages of the f lyovers, including less traffic jams, and better safety for people, as flyovers are much more visible than U-turns on the highway.” “But, they refuse to give up the land. Mourning has broken

he noble spectacle of the Royal Cremation of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, watched by the world on Thursday, closed a long and eventful chapter in Thai history. Any Westerners with links with Thailand will remember the day for the rest of their lives, the Thai people will carry it in their hearts forever. The remarkable ceremony reminds us all how deep cultural traditions run through Thailand, it’s not just a show for tourism, but a living culture that weaves through the everyday lives of the Thai people. Similarly, the dozens of international envoys who attended, be they monarchs, heads of government or ambassadors, showed not just the current positive state of diplomatic relations Thailand enjoys with the rest of the world, but also the deep respect that it’s great King earned over his seven-

decade reign as the world’s longest serving monarch. The United Nations held a special session to honour King Bhumibol after his passing last year. Far beyond usual practice, the UN on Oct 13 held another special session, to remember him after the one year anniversary of his death. Such was his standing in the international community. Many of the envoys attending the Royal Cremation lead or represent countries that have sidelined their own royal heritage, or shed it entirely – a path Thailand has not yet chosen to follow, most likely due to how well the monarchy under King Bhumibol served them. Political instability during his reign saw no less than 10 coups. During those years he was a force of unity, a stabilising figure of continuity that stood above and beyond politics. Under King Bhumibol’s

guiding hand Thailand has shone as a country. There is no doubt that the nation has faced grave challenges during his reign, but detractors will be well served by a quick comparison with the Kingdom’s neighbours to note the progress, prosperity and relative peace Thailand has enjoyed. But now the challenges lie ahead and this is where Thais, through their devotion to King Bhumibol, have the opportunity to carry his great message forward. Upon his death, his teachings have struck an even deeper chord within the country. The Thai people know that the greatest way to respect and remember King Bhumibol is to follow his teachings and his example. Equally important, is that his message and vision of a unified nation is goal worked towards by those in power, now and in the future.

Re: No lifeguards on Phuket beaches for two days, tourists urged to refrain from swimming Records about the number of drownings? Ha! Knowing how this place works, they probably count them the same way as they count their shameful motorbike deaths… if the person isn’t dead in the water… then they don’t count. They’re just someone who died from respiratory failure or from having water in their lungs. Thailand’s approach to all things related to tourist safety is beyond shameful, and more like flat out disgusting. Shame, shame, shame! Misplaced priorities

Re: Boy, 13, dead as pickup slams into motorcycle headon in Phuket How are these idiots allowed on the road in the first place. This guy here should be charged with murder and there is no case for his defence. Then after the long time in jail he should never be allowed on the roads again in any way shape or form. Why are the police more

concerned with motorbike tax and smoking on the beach than dangerous drivers who kill almost every day? That will make a far better impression for island’s tourism than almost anything else. Simon 01 ...................................................

Re: Chinese tourist drowns at Phuket beach China is now busy with her monetary problems. Phuket is just a dot on the world map. The number of coffins going to China are family tragedies, country wise, not important. Sounds harsh, but that is reality. And the Phuket desk authorities know that. So, no problems. Kurt Money, money, money… The

local officials are all making a huge amount off the tourists, but couldn’t care less if a few die, here or there. The well documented story of beaches being rented out for huge amounts of money. All sidewalk vendors having to pay to operate. It is a well known fact that all bars and entertainment operators have to pay monthly to a group of some 12 or more agencies. Everyone has their snout in the trough yet there is no money for lifeguards. Total greed and total disregard for the safety of the very people that provide them with all their ill gotten gains. Recently there was a story in all the Thai papers about two Thai college students that crashed their car into a river at the bottom of a deep ravine in California. I read many comments in the Bangkok Post shouting in outrage at the lack of timely response by the US just to remove the bodies from the wreckage. Yet tourists in Phuket can die pretty much every day, because the local officials can’t bare to part with some of that beautiful cash. Timothy

Re: Lifesaving Phuket surfer speaks out We watched Rick take control as he and his wife were wandering along the beach, the officials were dithering and Rick grabbed their board and paddled out to rescue the Chinese bloke risking his own life. Top marks Rick. I wouldn’t mind paying an entry fee into Thailand if that money went to lifeguards, after all we tourists come here to enjoy these beautiful beaches, however if idiots continue to swim in red flag zones they will inevitably pay the price. Chris Sharman It seems that the Thai government is only interested in getting tourists into the country, not in anything regarding their safety in any way, shape or form. Yanni Chef

Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous shines on show in Monaco MARINE LIFESTYLE The Phuket News editor@classactmedia.co.th

T

he Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous (KRSR) team returned from its successful trip to the Monaco Yacht Show, the world’s leading superyacht event, highly motivated by the amazing feedback from the media and the superyacht industry. The KRSR team handled a busy schedule of meetings with owners, builders, designers, brokers, luxury goods brands plus yachting and luxury lifestyle media in grand style as the countdown to the second KRSR event begins. “The response at Monaco was fantastic as it gives us valuable momentum in the leadup to December. I am very proud of the entire team, in just two years they have helped establish KRSR as the must-attend superyacht event in Asia,” said Richard Pope CEO Infinite Luxury. “It already is known as the most exclusive invitationonly superyacht happening in the region, welcoming superyacht owners, Kata Rocks villa owners and the Asian glitterati.” Mr Pope said that Benetti and VistaJet are excited to host an exclusive VIP owner’s dinner, leveraging a dream pairing of superyachts and private jet charters.

The view overlooking Kata Rocks villas with superyachts taking part in the KRSR hovering offshore. Photo: Kata Rocks Together with famed Dutch superyacht builder Feadship, whose roots date back to 1847, the companies bring a distinct European flair to Phuket and the KRSR. Based in Italy and with over 144 years of history, Benetti epitomises the finest craftsmanship and a refined sense of Italian design while Zurich-based VistaJet delivers bespoke flight experiences with operations in over 187 countries worldwide. The Benetti and VistaJet owner’s dinner is expected to prove the perfect complement to the Feadship owner’s dinner, a truly prestigious gathering attended by Kata Rocks Villa owners, superyacht owners and discerning guests.

According to Bas Nederpelt, Feadship Commercial Director, the company is pleased to increase its involvement in the 2017 event as a co-sponsor while hosting the exclusive superyacht owner’s dinner for a second consecutive year. “Following the huge success of last year’s KRSR, Feadship is again delighted to be taking a leading role this year and to host the Feadship Owner’s Dinner once again. The KRSR is helping Phuket become Asia’s top yachting destination,” Mr Nederpelt said. Media participation at the 2017 KRSR is expected to reach new heights with the addition of Boat International,

the global media authority in superyachting. Stewart Campbell, Editor of Boat International, said: “The KRSR really set the bar last year and we had some great conversations with owners at Monaco about attending the event this year, as the perfect way to kick off the Asian charter season. “It is already established as the leading luxury superyacht event in Asia as owners look for alternative cruising grounds and new charter opportunities.” The team is also pleased to confirm that even more superyacht brands are queueing up to come to Phuket and attend what is now widely recognised as Asia’s leading

superyacht event. On December 9-10, the invitation-only rendezvous will feature a series of bespoke activities, glamorous parties and social events that effortlessly mix networking and socialising in a relaxed and luxurious environment. Highlights from this year’s fun-filled programme include a welcome reception on a superyacht plus a cruise with the fleet to a secluded beach for a gourmet BBQ at The Surin Phuket. There are also numerous private cocktail parties, superyacht owner’s dinners, a “yacht hop” and “big boy’s toys” presented by Sea-Doo and much more. Jason Beavan, General Manager of Class Act Media,

the publisher of The Phuket News, said: “We are delighted to support the KRSR again and promote brand Phuket worldwide.” The Kata Rocks Superyacht Rendezvous (KRSR) continues its mission to elevate Phuket to elite destination status. The event empowers Phuket and elevates the island, as the region’s superyacht hotspot, capturing the interest and imagination of Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWI). The event appeals to yachting’s sophisticated superyacht elite and UHNWIs by enticing them to sample a multitude of new and exciting, emotionally-resonating experiences and the pristine beauty of Thailand’s Andaman Sea. The KRSR remains the region’s marquee attraction, with its relatively unexplored waters, where less than 10% of all superyachts have ever dropped anchor. KRSR has put Phuket firmly on the global yachting map as the hub of the Asia-Pacific region, which altogether offers a vast, multicultural cruising ground that is more than five times the size of traditional superyacht playgrounds like the Caribbean islands. TAKING THE PLUNGE

Getting a buzz from my first scuba diving experience with Sea Bees Mark Knowles editor1@classactmedia.co.th

L

ike many expats in Phuket, when I first arrived on the island I had grand plans of immediately getting my scuba diving certification and taking advantage of the incredible diving opportunities right on my doorstep. Then, again like many expats, work got in the way, other distractions mounted up and getting my scuba certification kept getting shuffled to the bottom of my long to-do list. But now, four years after my arrival in Phuket and with the peak diving season upon us, I decided I could procrastinate no longer. So I bit the bullet and signed up for a scuba training course at Phuket’s Sea Bees Diving – a long-established dive company that has been running trips in Phuket and other diving hotspots in southern Thailand for over 20 years. After a bit of research on their website, I decided that the three-day Scuba Schools International (SSI) certificate course seemed like the perfect fit. After the three-day course you obtain the internationally recognised SSI Scuba Diver certification which enables you to dive to 18 metres depth and which can be easily upgraded to the SSI Open Water Diver certification with additional training. So, after a quick phone call to the Sea Bees Diving office in Chalong to confirm the dates for my course, I was all set to go for my first day of basic training in their dedicated practice pool. Sea Bees prides itself on keeping a ratio of two students per instructor, but due to a stroke of luck and scheduling, I was able to do my training one-on-one. My instructor Alex, a friendly young man from Belgium who was a natural teacher, made the course seem like a breeze. The first day in the pool was an introduction to the basics of using scuba gear safely, learning hand signals, the dive buddy system and maintaining control of your buoyancy (one of the trickiest things to get a handle on, but perhaps the most essential skill for scuba diving). Alex was a great instructor, explaining each new technique in clear and simple terms, and before long I felt I had a pretty good feel for the basics and was itching to get out on the boat for my first open water dive. That evening I read up for my SSI exam on scuba diving theory. One of the best things about the SSI course is that you can access all of the course materials through their dedicated app. Once you sign up, you can use the app to log all your dives, study technical diving @thephuketnews

Sea Bees Diving has been running dive trips across the Andaman region from its base in Phuket for more than 20 years. Inset: Sea Bees Diving founder Holger Schwab holding the company’s 10th Golden Dolphin Award for ‘Best Diving Company - Indo-Pacific Region’. Photos: Sea Bees Diving information and take a practice test. At first I was worried that the scuba theory might be quite difficult to master, but it turned out to be easier than I thought and I managed to pass the test quite easily. I was up bright and early the next morning at Chalong Pier to board Excalibur II – one of Sea-Bees’ distinctive bright yellow boats – and we were soon on our way out to Koh Racha Noi for our first dive of the day. Everyone on board enjoyed a tasty hot breakfast and got to know each other a bit as we cruised through the beautiful aquamarine waters of the Andaman Sea. When we arrived at Koh Racha Noi Alex helped me get suited up for my first dive. This first dive was very much focussed on reenforcing the techniques I had learned in the pool the day before – but they seem a lot more daunting when you are 10m underwater. The hardest part was air sharing and the emergency ascent drill. It is not a comfortable feeling taking out your air regulator when you are so far underwater! But I felt I was in safe hands with Alex, and the more times we practised the more confident I felt. Also through this first dive we practised hand signals – the only form of communication you have with your dive buddy – another crucial skill to master for safe diving. The importance of mastering buoyancy control – by carefully regulating your breathing – becomes clear when you’re diving in open water.

More than a few times I had trouble either floating up too high or sinking down too fast – but as the day went on, I got better and better. For the next dive we headed to another popular beginner’s dive site on the other side of Koh Racha Noi. This second dive was where the fun really started, my confidence was up and I felt comfortable gliding over the coral spotting sea life. Again, Alex was a great help here, constantly pointing out animals I would have completely missed otherwise. On this dive I saw a moray eel, an octopus, giant clams and countless species of reef fish, my favourites were the brightly coloured parrot fish. Alex also pointed out many nudibranch – tiny slug-like creatures that come in a dazzling variety of neon colours. We then headed back to the boat for lunch and the cruise to our final dive spot of the day at Koh Racha Yai. After practising a few more techniques we began to explore the nooks and crannies of the reef to see if we could spot more creatures. I had my eyes firmly fixed on the coral below me as I suddenly felt Alex grab me and begin dragging me back from the direction I was heading. Then I saw why – a large, angry-looking trigger fish was heading straight for me, clearly displeased that I had intruded his territory. Alex had warned me of this particular species’ aggressive behaviour and I was glad he had been keeping a close eye on me, otherwise I wouldn’t have realised until it had bitten me.

After that bit of excitement it was time to call it a day and board on the boat for the trip home with a few ice-cold beverages to celebrate my first foray into the underwater world. The final day of the course was great as we got to dive in some different conditions. At one site there was a current that helped you glide over the reef as if you were flying. It was a little scary at first but once I got the hang of it it was amazing fun. The final day went event quicker than the first and before I knew it we were heading back to Phuket and I eagerly chatted with Alex about some of the other dive sites I could visit when I came back to get my Advanced Open Water certificate. All in all it was a fantastic experience and a perfect introduction to the world of scuba diving – I can’t believe I waited so long to do it! It’s easy to see why Sea-Bees has been around for so long, and has such a good reputation, the whole course went like clockwork and the instructors and boat crew were super-friendly and helpful. I can’t wait to get back in the water again, hopefully obtaining my Advanced Open Water qualification this season and even doing a night or wreck dive. So, if like me, you have been constantly putting off getting your scuba certification, then stop making excuses and book your course today. Trust me, you won’t regret it. The white elephant in Thai culture

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2017

White elephants are highly auspicious in Thailand and are symbols of royal power SIRINYA’S WORLD Dr Sirinya Pakditawan pakditawan@googlemail.com

I

n my view, one of the most impressive and majestic animals is the elephant, in particular the white elephant. In Thai culture the white elephant is called chang samkhan which means “auspicious elephant”. Whiteness is regarded as an sign of purity in this context. The white elephant has an important meaning in both Hinduism and Buddhism. In Hinduist thought, the white elephant is related to the God Indra who is also a guardian deity in Buddhism. His elephant can also fly and it is called ‘Airavata’. This kind of elephant is thus also related to Buddha’s conception since

his mother Maya is said to have been circled by a white elephant three times until it entered her womb through her right side. Thus, in Thailand white elephants (chang phueak) are not only considered to be auspicious but they also belong lawfully to the King. Have you ever seen a white elephant? In fact, chang phueak are not necessarily albinos but are much paler than common elephants. Their skin may be light grey, beige or even have a rosy or pinkish hue. Think of the impressive procession of eleven white elephants at the Grand Palace in honour of Thailand’s late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in Bangkok on November 8, 2016. In Thai culture, the status of kings have been rated by the number of white elephants that were in their possession and they have been historically considered a symbol of the King’s majesty.

White elephants have been used in royal ceremonies for hundreds of years because of their revered status. Hence, the late King Bhumibol owned the greatest number of white elephants. He had 21 white elephants and this can be regarded as an unprecedented achievement. Eleven of these elephants are still alive but only five of them have royal titles. Hence, how does a chang phueak become a royal elephant? An elephant has to undergo a number of tests conducted by the Bureau of the Royal Household since it is important to ensure that the elephant is suited for the title and has not only the physical but also the behavioural characteristics required.

In the past, Thai kings also gave white elephants as presents to friends and allies. This was a blessing or curse since an elephant considered sacred was not supposed to work and at the same time it needed care and food. Thus, a chang phueak could easily become a huge financial burden to the owner unless the king would also provide the recipient with land for the elephant. Summing up, we may say that the white elephant has been the most sacred and auspicious animal in Thai culture since it is also considered as a royal animal related to the King.

Taking things to the very top

HeadStart students named ‘Top in Thailand’ in Cambridge Awards The Phuket News editor1@classactmedia.co.th

F

our students from HeadStart International School, Phuket recently received prestigious awards from Cambridge International Examinations to acknowledge their outstanding performance in the Cambridge examinations in June this year. Three of the students – Hyerin “Riny” Cho, Paola Stoffel and Bomnuri “Lisa” Kim – were named “Top of Thailand” and a fourth student, Natalia Kotova, received a High Achievement award for her excellent results. The four students garnered awards across a range of different subjects: • Natalia Kotova – High Achievement: IGCSE First Language Russian • Hyerin “Riny” Cho – Top in Thailand: International AS Level Business • Paola Stoffel – Top in Thailand: IGCSE Foreign Language French • Bomnuri “Lisa” Kim – Top in Thailand: IGCSE Physical Education Elizabeth Mason, Head of Secondary at HeadStart, praised the four winning students for their excellent efforts and said the awards were a reflection of the school’s commitment to provide a broad and well-balanced curriculum that adapts to the needs of all students. “We shine in all areas, we do our best

@thephuketnews

From left: Director of Studies Mr Adam Drew, Head of Secondary Ms Elizabeth Mason, Paola Stoffel, Bomnuri ‘Lisa’ Kim, Hyerin ‘Riny’ Cho, Natalia Kotova and Business Studies Teacher Mr Michael Hurley. to provide a broad ranging curriculum that provides a balance between academic subjects and practical subjects,” said Ms Mason. The awards were the culmination of a very successful year for HeadStart students where more than 39% of all exam entries at IGCSE were graded at A* or A. Teacher Michael Hurley, who taught Hyerin “Riny” Cho in Business Studies said he wasn’t entirely surprised when he learnt that Riny had won the award, because of the incredible dedication she has shown to her studies. “I’m very pleased, but I could say it’s not a huge surprise, she puts in a huge amount of effort, so I think its a recognition of all the work she has put in, she really deserves it,” he said. For Riny, who wants to study psychol-

ogy when she goes to university, it seems the awards came as more of a surprise. “I didn’t think my grade was that high! I thought someone else in Thailand must have gotten a higher mark than me… my parents were very proud and happy,” said Riny. Bomnuri “Lisa” Kim, who was named “Top in Thailand” for Physical Education, has become a keen swimmer since she came to HeadStart, but says she also enjoys the other academic pursuits. “When I came to HeadStart I began participating in a lot more activities, not just sports, but also a program called World Scholars Cup, which is a really good experience, because you get to meet other students from all around the world and debate with them,” said Lisa. Lisa is one of the well rounded stu-

dents that HeadStart has been able to produce in recent years, not only did she achieve nine A* grades in her IGCSE exams in June, and took part in the Tournament of Champions round of the World Scholars Cup at Yale University in the US, but she is also a member of the highperforming HeadStart Swim Academy, and has played major roles in the school’s Performing Arts programs. Paola Stoffel, was also taken by surprise when she found out she was named “Top in Thailand” for French. “It was a shock, I really wasn’t expecting it… I have a friend that also could have won it, so we were looking at her… but then they said my name… so I was pretty happy,” said Paola. Natalia Kotova credited her love of reading Russian books with her High Achievement award, but was still caught off guard when her name was announced during assembly for winning the award. “It was a surprise, I didn’t expect it at all, because I didn’t prepare as much as I should have because Russian is my native language and I had a lot of other subjects to prepare for, so it was really surprising,” said Natalia. As HeadStart’s student body continues to grow, Head of Secondary Ms Mason has high hopes for all her students. “I was hoping we would get a ‘Top in the World’, but that will be something we will be aiming for next year,” she said.

Vettel’s damaging F1 defeat

One-time championship contender knows his number’s up BOX OF NEUTRALS Michael Lamonato michael@boxofneutrals.com

“F

airly quickly we realised we could n’t go at his pace today,” Vettel said dejectedly, despite finishing second to Lewis Hamilton at the United States Grand Prix. He didn’t use so many words, but the German knows his championship number’s up. Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel had but one task in Austin, but as with all things in Texas, it was a big one: outscore Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari threw everything at this race knowing Vettel’s already slender title hopes were stretched to breaking point. Upgrades were rushed to Austin so quickly there were only enough parts for one car – Vettel’s of course

Second place finisher Sebastian Vettel in parc ferme during the United States Formula One Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas. Photo: Clive Mason / AFP – in an attempt to keep the team’s head above water. But it was all in vain. Though Vettel executed a perfect start to steal the lead from pole-sitter Hamilton at the first turn, it took Lewis just six laps to reclaim first place and cruise into the distance. “There was no real secret

other than they were quicker than us,” Vettel said, “I think we have to admit that.” T he fou r-t i me world champ trailed the soon-tobe four-time world champ by 59 points before the Texas race; now that gap has grown to 66, putting Hamilton well beyond the magic 50 he needs at the end of the month to

claim his crown. Vettel, in other words, has put himself in a position whereby he needs to outscore Hamilton by 17 points at this weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix just to stay in contention. Much to Vettel’s chagrin, Austin was his first clean race in more than five weeks after crashes and mechanical issues

marred his previous three grand prixs. Ironically in all three of those races his was the fastest car. The culmination of those calamitous three races wasn’t simply the hemorrhaging points; it was that Mercedes identified another problem with its car, fixed it, and once again reclaimed the mantle of fastest team by Austin. “It’s been an incredible year so far,” Hamilton said, on the podium. “I was not expecting to have the pace we had on Sebastian today.” It was a timely turnaround for Mercedes, too, with its strong US showing enough to claim the team its fourth consecutive constructors’ championship. Mercedes joins the ranks of Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull Racing as the only team to win four in a row. “When we set out objectives it was to win both

championships and to be the first team to do it through a regulation change like this,” team boss Toto Wolff said. “To achieve it here in Austin with three races to go feels unbelievable.” “I am so proud of what has been achieved,” Wolff added, “And doing it because every team member has dug deeper to find performance, been even more diligent on reliability, this has come together in the most special way.” Mercedes acknowledges it’s a situation of one down and one to go, but with both 2017 titles done and dusted, it won’t be long until attention turns fully to the permutation for the 2018 championship season. Don’t forget to tune in to Live89.5 each and every Saturday from 9am for the Box of Neutrals radio show.

Khao Lak Surf Contest ushers out the season Continued from page 24 ...Memories Restaurant on Pakarang Beach hosts this epic event and this year, airline company AirAsia saw its value by jumping on board as a major sponsor and donating tickets to Bali. The waves were not huge, but were clean and manageable for a lot of the new beginner and grom surfers. Pakarang Beach is ideal for long boarding and the best surfers were able to provide some dazzling entertainment as they carved it up. The winners who triumphed were Khun Bai from Khao Lak, taking out the longboard division; shortboard was Khun Lim from Kamala; Nong Nai from Khao Lak taking the Groms; and Annie from Kata took out the women’s division. You can see all the photos and action of the event of the Facebook page: Khao Lak Surfing Contest Typically, at the start of November the monsoon storms bellow out their last bursts of wind and rain, before turning the ocean and beach back to its postcard picture of calm tropical water. As the last swells start to roll through for the 2017 Phuket surf season, surfers are making the most of it by spending long hours milking every wave. Occasionally you can still get some small bumps of ground swell right up until January but they are rare and @thephuketnews

very inconsistent. Most surfers pack away their surfboards for the season now, but there are some desperate and conscientious surfers who will keep their boards on the car, keeping a close eye on the forecast. These last fleeting waves will generally only be surfable in the early morning before the high season North East wind starts to blow. For all you newbies to Phuket or those of you who have just picked up the enthusiasm of surfing this year, you may be thinking well, what now, what can I do till next year. I mentioned in my last article the options for a surf holiday to other Asian surf destinations, but if you don’t have the time or money to travel, then here are a couple of other options that Phuket has to offer. 1. ‘Skyla’s Surf & SUP Club’ offer board rentals and a monthly membership, where you can use their Stand Up Paddle Boards daily to self explore around the stunning bays and beaches Phuket has to offer, or even join the crew on Bang Tao Beach for group social paddles. SUP is an ideal way to keep your fitness up and do what you love most, which is being in the ocean. 2. If SUP is not extreme enough for you then Anthem Wake Board Park in Cherng Talay won’t leave you unhappy. Its professional circuit of rails and jumps will allow you to

continue building your strength and balance. Spend a perfect afternoon relaxing and chilling out at their restaurant looking over the lake or test yourself at the Rebel indoor rock climbing centre next door. Another tip, keep your eye out as many people are leaving the island and wanting to sell their surfboards. You can

often pick up a great bargain as they want to offload them quickly. The surf shops around the island will also have sales to get rid of old stock. So the off season is the best time to get your surf equipment for next season which will return in May. Enjoy the remaining few waves of the season frothas!

Worst ‘low’ season ever But that’s not the fishing: That’s been up there with the best! FISHING

CAST AWAY Jimmy Stewart info@fishinginphuket.com

W

ell maties, that’s it, official, this “low” season has been the worst on record, while amazingly – TiT – the fishing, when we could get out, was up there with the best. So now we can look forward to Loy Kratong and the start of the high season, which to the fishing fraternity means, The Phuket News sponsored and re-branded “Phuket Sportfishing Tournament” (P.S.T.), which takes place over Nov 22-25. “Early Bird” offers will be open until Oct 31, so guys, this could be your last chance to register and book a boat. “Early Bird” registrations will allow a team of four anglers to enter the P.S.T. for a bargain price of B10,000. Once the “Early Bird” registration closes that price will

Entrants to the Phuket Sportfishing Tournament will be hoping for plenty of catches like this when the tournament is held from Nov 22-25. Photo: Tony Carpenter increase to B13,000 per team. Now, after last season’s very successful venture up into the “Burma Banks” I have been advised M.V. Thai 2 On is once again undertaking this amazing fishing opportunity for their clients, starting around the middle of February. Any parties interested in fishing this world renowned

bill fishing area should get in contact as soon as possible in order for Ian, the owner, to work out his schedule and the logistics of once again taking the boat from Phuket into Myanmar’s “Burma Banks”, and its world-class fishing. Any interested parties looking for information on Thai 2 On and the “Burma

Banks” are welcome to contact me and I will be happy to forward previously published information on the “Banks”. Not for the lily livered – it’s serious fishing! Keelhaul the swab! I must apologise to the members of the Phuket Fishing & Boating Assn. The PF&BA’s Facebook page did not allow free access, which was the whole point of the exercise, so everyone could check into who wants to share, rent, buy or sell boats. The issue “I think” has been resolved. I obviously was having one of my “senior” moments.

I think? Maybe? Where was I? By way of saying sorry I have added Knottty bits – enjoy. Keep a weather eye open, might be good news in the works. Catfish have stingers located on their whiskers. 555 – What a load ol’crab! There is a myth among these “fresh” water fishermen that catfish “sting”, so this old “salty” will tell ya the facts. The dorsal and pectoral fins actually carry a mild venom which can feel like a sting, especially in smaller, younger fish where the leading edge of the fins are sharper and more likely to scratch/break the skin. So if you do ever get “cat nipped” try this old remedy; rub the infected area of your hand on the fish’s belly and you will be amazed how quickly the discomfort goes away. Another old my th we regularly hear repeated is bananas are bad luck on a boat. Although many sailors will agree with this statement the truth goes way back to sailing ship days, when they took on provisions, bananas would “spoil” contaminating any other fruits and veggies in their vicinity, as they quickly ripened. This was later compounded by steam ships refusing to carry bananas in their holds

as the gasses emitted by the ripening cargoes occasionally led to them blowing their lids with a bang. Although I don’t believe in all this silly superstitious nonsense, please, please, please leave your bananas at home – on land they are great after a day’s fishing, for you rarely notice the isometric exercise you are getting on a boat and nanas are very good for stopping leg cramps which are common after exertion in hot climates such as Phuket. This week’s photo, while not being local, was so good I felt it had to be shared, especially as drones have added a whole new dimension to fishing. Brilliant! BUT, according to a recent copy of The Phuket News: Unregistered drones are now banned in Thailand – a tax on the sport of “Aerial Fishing Photography” – and I’m meant to be a pirate? And finally in the “News this Month”, I see a killer whale is back off the coast. Quickly followed by: B100,000 fines for smoking on the beaches – and B2,000 fines for polluting a khlong. “Wonder where khlongs go?” So it’s obvious where the big predators will be patrolling. Watch out guys. Travel P.O.S.H. and don’t feed the fish. Tight lines Jimmy: fishinginphuket.com

‘Thai 2 On’ will once again be heading back for a spot of fishing at the ‘Burma Banks’.

Liverpool defence needs urgent work

Jurgen Klopp admitted it himself after Liverpool’s 4-1 thrashing at Tottenham Hotspur – his team’s defending was “bad, bad, bad” and it is only getting worse. Money not buying Everton success Everton may have spent some £150 million (B6.56 billion) on new players during the last transfer window but a big outlay has never been a guarantee of instant success and a 5-2 loss at home to Arsenal left the Toffees in the Ronald Koeman became relegation zone. Thailand’s competitive surf community also finished up its season last week with the most anticipated event of the year, the Khao Lak Surfing Contest. The majority of surfers in Thailand reside in Phuket so the excitement builds for this contest as everyone packs up their cars, turns the stereo up full ball and heads to Khao Lak on the mainland for a three-day weekend of camping and surfing.
