n an effort to ramp up security on the island, all passengers arriving or leaving via one of the island’s piers must have their passport or ID card recorded via CCTV Phuket G overnor has announced.

Foreigner dies after struck by tour bus

A ID TIFI D F eign man died early Wednesday morning (Jan 27) when he allegedly jumped in front of a bus on Patong Hill.

Police are currently investigating the incident and trying to identify the victim.

Lt Col Patapee Srichai of the Kathu Police received a call from a local resident at 4 : 20 am advising him of an accident near Soi Kwanyang on rabaramee d in atong, where a foreign man had been hit by a bus.

Police arrived at the scene with Kusoldharm rescue workers to find the body of a foreign man lying in the road. The man had suffered broken arms and legs.

A tour bus registered in Nakhon Sri Thammarat province was parked at the side of the road and its driver, Somkhit Wongpan, 34 , was standing nearby waiting for police.

Col Patapee said, “The man, who is between 4 0 -4 5 years old and 175 -18 0 cm tall, had a shaved head and was wearing shorts and a white T-shirt. e found no identification on the man and no one in the area knows who he is,” Lt Col Patapee said.

“According to Mr Wongpan, he was heading down the hill into Patong to pick up tourists at a hotel. He saw a foreign man standing in the middle of road, but then he suddenly jumped in front of the bus. He said he tried to stop but it was too late,” he said.

“We are not sure whether the victim committed suicide or was drunk, but we are investigating to find out more about this incident and also trying to identify the man so we can contact his embassy and notify his family,” he added.

huket Vice G overnor Chokdee Amornwat has ordered a security detail to maintain peace at the sea gypsy community in Rawai after several villagers were injured in clashes with private workers hired to clear the area for private development on Wednesday morning (Jan 27).

Military personnel led by Lt Col Sompop Kamkana of the Royal Thai Navy secured the area at about 11: 30 am, while V/ G ov Chokdee and Rawai Mayor Aroon Solos spoke with villagers.

When they arrived, rescue workers were busy transporting villagers injured in the clashes to medical facilities nearby.

More than 20 0 villagers, including women and children, had gathered at the site, where officials were told that the fight broke out when more than 10 0 workers started to clear the land with a backhoe and excavators.

Villagers attempted to stop the workers from using an excavator from placing rocks to block off the entrance to the land, which resulted in the workers and villagers trading blows.

DESPITE STATING BACK in November last year that the Ace Condo legal case would be passed to Phuket Provincial Court within a month, the papers are still in the hands of the public prosecutor tasked with dealing with it.

Kathu Police handed over their case evidence and documents to the Phuket Provincial ublic rosecutor’s ffice on ctober 6, confidently stating that the case should be brought to the court “within two weeks .

However, Public Prosecutor Jessada Banditmongkolkul said that he needed at least one more month to bring the Ace Condo case to court.

Despite making that statement, when The Phuket News contacted Mr Banditmongkolkul Wednesday last week ( an 0), he could not confirm when the case would be presented in court.

The prosecutor’s office need to be careful about all the evidence and laws involved in this case before we bring it to court, he said.

“We do not want to specify when the case will go to court, but we will make it as fast as

we can, he added.

He said the case contained a lot of information, involves many people and covers a number of laws.

The case aims to bring a a slew of charges against the developer, The Nine Property (Patong) Co, including fraud, developing land without the required permits, failure to obtain a building permit, and contravention of the Consumer Protection Act. However, Mr Jessada went on to say that he is dealing with a criminal case and that the victims can still bring civil charges against the developers of the Ace 1 Condominium project in Patong if they want to claim their money back.

“The victims can bring their case to court as a civil case by themselves to get their money back, he said. They do not have to wait for the prosecutor’s office.

Mr Jessada also stated that he believed that the customers will get their money back, with interest, because the developer has clearly broken the agreement stated in the relevant documents.

It goes without saying that accidents are not uncommon. ach year, officials trot out their standard safety warning, and each year children and adults are rushed to hospital for in uries to fingers, hands, faces and eyes for burns sustained by a wayward incendiary.

The people injured are

always ordinary people – parents, teens and children – never the e pert fireworks technicians, which raised the question of whether or not non-experts should have such easy access to such fireworks.

To this, The Phuket News asked readers, Should fireworks be sold to the public f those who voted, responded “Y es, but the siz e and types of fireworks should be graded so that only adults can buy the more dangerous ones.”

However, 16 responded, “Y es, but only adults should have the right to buy and set

off any fireworks.

A clear majority of respondents voiced their opinion that only experts should have access to firewroks – or they should be banned entirely. espectively, 40 of those who took part in the poll voted, “No, only people who can prove they’re certified to work with fireworks should be able to buy them”.

A further 16 voted, o, fireworks should be banned entirely; they are too noisy and their materials pose a security risk.

ar r y Cunningham, who served as Australian Honorary Consul for Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi for nine years, has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours List in recognition for his services.

The investiture ceremony for the Order of Australia will be held in Canberra in April.

“As a very proud Australian I am honoured to receive the Order of Australia Medal,” Mr Cunningham told The Phuket News on Tuesday (Jan 26), Australia Day 20 16.

“I am thankful for the assistance of my fellow Honorary Consuls during my nine years as Australian Honorary Consul for Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi in our combined attempts to make Phuket a safer place.

continued to plague Phuket, including corruption and crime targeting tourists.

He was also recognised as a staunch supporter of Phuket and a believer that positive change could secure the island’s position as a leading global tourism destination.

James Wise, Australian Ambassador to Thailand at the time, praised Mr Cunningham for his tireless efforts in helping Australians in need.

He described how Mr Cunningham worked “tirelessly” following the One-Two-G o airline crash at Phuket International Airport in September 20 0 7, which killed 8 9 people including one Australian.

M r Cu n ningham had helped “hundreds” of airline passengers on several occasions over the years – the latest of which was when Air Australia went bust in February 20 12,

Old rules rehashed for local jet-ski operators AU T HOR I T I E S H AV E begun to regulate the jet-ski rental business in Phuket to boost the island’s image and tourist confidence.

Speaking at a meeting with operators at Phuket Provincial Hall, Phuket Marine Chief Phuriphat Theerakulpisut said on January 21 the local jet-ski rental business will be overhauled to provide safety for tourists and prevent visitors from being exploited by operators.

Mr Phuriphat said only registered jet-skis will be allowed to operate in local waters. All are required to have insurance and renew their operating licences annually.

However, the proposed regulations did not explain how the new regulations will address the complaints for years that certain jet-ski operators cheat their customers.

They claim riders caused damage – typically a scratch or dent – and demand the tourists immediately pay exorbitant amounts for repairs.

The demands quickly escalate to threats of violence if the tourists refuse.

A F E M A L E C H I L D D OL L stuffed with 20 0 methamphetamine (ya b ah) pills was found in the car park of Chiang Mai International Airport on Monday (Jan 25 ).

Narcotics police searched the area about 6pm after receiving a tip-off that drugs stuffed in a child doll would be delivered to a customer there.

Lt Col Kom Chetkhunthod, chief of the Chiang Mai narcotics suppression unit, said a black bag containing a doll was found left in a shelter at the airport’s car park.

A cavity in the doll’s chest contained 19 8 orange and two green ya b ah pills.

It was the first known case of drugs being delivered in such a doll.

In its Corruption Perceptions Index 20 15 , Transparency International (TI) said Thailand placed 76th among 168 countries, tied with such nations as Burkina Faso, Tunisia and Z ambia. While the country’s relative ranking improved from 8 5 th place last year, its score of 38 remained the same, marking no improvement by the government or private sector in curbing graft.

However, those 38 points were good enough for third place in Southeast Asia, behind Singapore, at 8 th overall, and Malaysia (5 4 th).

Inertia was a hallmark of most Asean countries this year when it came to battling corruption. Vietnam (112) moved up seven places, but scored the same number of points (31) as last year, Laos (139 ) and Cambodia (15 0 ) moved up six places in the relative rankings, but scored the same. Myanmar improved to 22 points from 21, good for 14 7th place.

Burglar shot dead inside diamond shop SONGKHLA A 38 -Y EAR-OLD BU RG LAR who broke into a diamond seller’s shop in Hat Y ai district was shot dead by the owner, a former policeman, in the early hours of Tuesday (Jan 26).

The intruder, identified later as Somsak Phethong, entered Hangphet PV Jewellery shop on Soi Phetkasem 28 off Phetkasem Road in Hat Y ai municipality through the back door around 3am, Wichai Wannawong, 68 , a former Songkhla police officer and owner of the shop, told police.

The ow ner’s younger brother Boonyakorn Chansawang, 4 5 , lives on the second oor of the four-storey building and was awoken by the noise. He went downstairs and came across the burglar.

He attacked the burglar, who hit back at him. The owner, asleep on the fourth oor, was also awoken by the noise and rushed downstairs to see what was afoot. He saw the burglar running up to the second oor, he said.

The new shop had opened just three days before the attempted burglary. Security cameras in the building captured the entire incident, police said.

Police believed the slain burglar was the same person

who robbed a gold shop in Hat Y ai on Saturday (Jan 23) and made off with gold ornaments with an estimated value of almost B1 million.

Investigators who examined footage from the Rattanamanee gold shop in Khorhong municipaliy, which was robbed on Jan 23, concluded the robber looked very similar to the dead Somsak.

Hours before Wednesday morning’s release of TI’s latest index, Malaysia’s top prosecutor cleared Prime Minister Najib of corruption, putting a spotlight on graft strangling the country’s public sector.

The attorney-general on Tuesday (Jan 26) said some $ 68 1 million that Mr Najib received in his bank account were a personal donation from the Saudi royal family.

Elsewhere in Asean, TI added that it believes Cambodia is “exacerbat-

ing corruption by clamping down on civil society”. Thailand’s May 20 14 military coup and the ensuing, much-ballyhooed campaign against corruption was not acknowledged.

“Reversing corruption is clearly not solely down to governments, but they’re the ones with the largest role and the power to create enabling environments for others,” the organisation wrote of Asia- acific’s graft woes in the report.

“This year’s poor results demand that leaders revisit the genuineness of their efforts and propel the region beyond stagnation. They must fulfil promises, and ensure efforts aren’t undermined in practice.”

Overall, two-thirds of the countries measured by TI scored below the 5 0 -point mark out of a top score of 10 0 .

Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland and Sweden – topped the chart with their clean public sectors as in previous years, while strife-torn or repressive states – Afghanistan, North Korea and Somalia – brought up the rear.

Emerging giants, in particular, showed a worrisome picture in the index used widely used as a gauge of the level of corruption by governments, legal systems, political parties and bureaucracies.

A native of Maryland, the 72-year-old Mr Shomette first visited Mallows Bay as a teenager.

Mr Shomette’s affinity for underwater archaeology and h is to r y to o k h im o v e r th e y e a rs fro m th e c o a s t o f Y o rk s h ire , England, to the depths of Lake Michigan, working as a consultant for groups such as National Geographic.

But Mr Shomette kept returning to the eerie collection of ships laying untouched n e a rly in h is b a c k y a rd . E v e n tually he obtained a grant and tu r n e d h is p a s s io n in to a w o rk p u r s u it.

O v e r a 1 0 -y e a r p e r io d , Mr Shomette collected and a n a ly s e d d a ta f ro m th e s h ip s , compiling a 500-page dossier documenting in great detail each member of the fleet. “ It is h a rd to s a y w h a t m y fa v o u r ite p ro je c ts a re b e c a u s e all discovery is exciting,” Mr Shomette says. “But of course, Mallows Bay is incomparable. “ W e h a v e h e re a la b o ra to r y w h ic h w e c a n te s t a n d s tu d y , and bring tourists to see history in the flesh.”

The proposal is undergoing p u b lic re v ie w , w ith lo c a l c o m munities providing feedback to NOAA through a series of open hearings. President Barack Obama offered his support when the process first began, but Mallows Bay still has quite a way to go before it earns official recognition.

Once NOAA makes a fin a l d e c is io n , th e G o v e r n o r of Maryland and Congress w ill h a v e a c h a n c e to re v ie w it. The earliest Mallows Bay would receive its designation is th e fa ll o f 2 0 1 7 .

Though the rustic waters c a p e h a s a lw a y s b e e n f re e a n d o p e n to th e p u b lic , th e Maryland community hopes making Mallows Bay a sanctu a r y w ill p u t it o n th e m a p .

“We think that Mallows Bay Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary will become a m a jo r e c o -to u r is m d r iv e r fo r C h a rle s C o u n ty a n d a ls o the state of Maryland,” Mr D u n n s a id .

TAT takes bold steps to focus on quality TTR Weekly

hailand will pursue an ambitious target to grow tourism revenue to B2.4 1 trillion, extend travel connectivity to neighbouring countries and take its highying travel show, TTM 016, to orth Thailand for the first time.

Addressing a media briefing at the Asean Tourism Forum last Friday (Jan 22), Tourism Authority of Thailand G overnor Dr Y uthasak Supasorn outlined an ambitious strategy to expand tourism revenue, while promoting options that combine Thailand’s top destinations with travel opportunities in neighbouring countries.

He also announced that TAT would host its premier travel trade show, Thailand Travel Mart lus 016, in the northern city of hiang Mai and open the event to Asean members in support of the Asean conomic ommunity.

U p until this year the country’s agship trade event has been held in Bangkok.

The governor’s strategy touches on strengthening niche tourism particularly the weddings and honeymoon market in Asia and green tourism to a global audience.

Achieving a quality, balanced tourism experience was a core theme in his presentation to ATF media.

“This year we will focus less on visitor arrivals and more on achieving quality tourism targets,” he explained.

“Our strategy for international markets will position the kingdom as a quality leisure destination through Thainess.”

“I

f it weren’t for nearly being eaten by a shark, I might have never come to Phuket,” exclaims Daniel Cairncross, Physical Education and Swimming Instructor for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 at Kajonkiet International School.

To learn more about this interesting instructor, The Phuket News recently sat down with Mr Cairncross for an worts and all interview.

A proud graduate of Wynberg Boys High School in his native Cape Town, South Africa, Daniel went on to study Journalism, before pursuing a Sport Science degree, with a Major in Physiology at Stellenbosch University, the top sports university in South Africa.

In addition to his PE and swimming instruction responsibilities at KIS, Mr Cairncross coaches The Barracudas, Kajonkiet’s elite swimming club who train six mornings a week.

An able swimmer, sailor, and surfer, Mr Cairncross loves pretty much all water-based sports and activities, especially water polo.

“I got into sailing from an early age, and over time gravitated to water polo,

which was my main sport from about the age of 12 until 23,” he says.

For those who don’t know, water polo is a pool-based, seven-a-side team sport with a goal at each end of the pool, which must have an even-depth of no less than two metres.

Suffice to say, it requires lots of swimming and treading water since you can’t touch the ground or sides.

“It’s actually a very physical and ‘dirty’ sport, and you need to play with rolling substitutes,” Daniel notes, adding, “I’d like to get something going here in Thailand, as I haven’t seen much compared to Singapore and Malaysia, where they’ve really taken it up.”

Indeed, the physical strength and level of endurance built up from a life in the water has made Daniel an exceptional swimmer, and a complement to KIS’s swim department, alongside Mr Kolthof (Early Years) and Mr Veltman (KS3 and KS4).

In addition to his Level 1 Swim Coach Certificate from South Africa, Mr Cairncross is also pursuing certification with Swim Australia.

Reflecting on his near-death experience, the 30-year-old South African recounts, “Prior to coming here, I had just finished my final uni exam and was a surf instructor in Cape Town, which I had been for about a year up

But that came to an abrupt end one day when he was out in the water being towed by a boat, coming into a bay from the sea, where a shark warning had just been issued.

“I got pulled into the boat just in the nick of time, another metre and I would have been shark food,” he laughs.

Five weeks after that, he decided on a change of scenery and took up an invitation from a friend in Phuket, where there are no known man-eating sharks, yet still a dire need for water and swim instructors.

After all, we do live on an island where unnecessary drownings are alltoo-common.

When he’s not teaching swimming at KIS, Daniel actively enjoys the water. He catches as many waves as he can during the short surf season, and occasionally goes out for a sail in the Phang-nga Bay.

“I’ve recently taken up wakeboarding, bought a new wakeboard and moved near to the park here in Kathu,” he reveals.

But it’s not only water-based sports Daniel enjoys. He is also a proud member of Phuket’s rugby outfit, the Vagabonds, and has been seen joining a football pick-up match with parents and teachers.

Bringing art to the backstreets

H

eading into Phuket Old Town along Phang Nga Rd, you might have noticed something out of the ordinary – a fresh and vibrant, artistic addition to the iconic historical streetside scene. In stark contrast to the ordinary and dull, colonial style buildings, House Number 100 now screams at motorists and pedestrians to stop, turn their heads, pull over and have a closer look.

But don’t stare too long, take a photo – it will last much longer, so the saying goes. As part of a creative “100 of Arts” youth art project, the historical building was given a trendy, new exterior face-lift, featuring iconic street-art depictions of sweets and treats.

On January 18, Phuket artists and students came together to collaborate on the project near the corner of Phang Nga and Yaowarat roads, in the Old Town sector of Talad Yai sub district.

The theme: Street Art Sweets. The concept: Decorate the historic facade with colourful street art so as to entice aspiring photographers and selfie smiley models to come and pose for pictures, which so far has proved to be a huge hit in Phuket’s ever growing art savvy so-

The project was the brainchild of Ms Boontita Boonsusakul, 18, who is a relative of the house owner, and is an aspiring artist herself.

Speaking to The Phuket News, Ms Boontita explained the concept of the House 100 project.

“I wanted to open up the opportunity for friends to demonstrate their artistic abilities. This house is in a prime historical and cultural area and we wanted to create something new and exciting,” she said.

“The Old Town sector is mostly

known for its Sino-portuguese architecture and traditional Phuket food, which attract tourists from every corner of the world, and so I wanted to create a new and interesting attraction, not only for foreign tourists, but locals as well,” she said.

Aspiring social media selfie models should not wait too long to get their smartphone and professional portraits taken at House Number 100, because the house owner may soon have second thoughts, considering all the hoards of visitors she’s received since the launch of the project.

Bigger, better than ever

Phuket has an opportunity to make a name for itself in music, and in this regard the Jazz Day concerts are central.

The 2016 International Jazz Day Festival not only features local artists, but bands from Chiang Mai, Bangkok, the Philippines and also England.

P

huket’s Vegetarian Festival and the King’s Cup Regatta are the two most famous annual events on this Thai island, now one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. But, though each has undeniable merits, for jazz lovers there’s nothing like the annual Phuket UNESCO International Jazz Day festival in Phuket Town, organised jointly by the municipal office and Music Matter jazz club.

The jazz festival is a pleasure all round, increasingly so as it grows from year to year. Someday we may expect Phuket town’s jazz extravaganza ranked among the island’s principal draws, along with the beaches and exotic nightlife.

27 April 2016 will mark the start of Jazz Day’s fifth year, with major performances not only on Chana Charoen Rd, site of the fest since its inception in 2011 and home to Music Matter, but at a site yet to be announced. This year, the show begins on 27th April, and will include events related to the city’s new found status as a UNESCO City of Gastronomy – which in plain terms means there’s going to be some great food to go along with the music.

The municipal government extended a helping hand almost from the moment Kay Mongkolkaew and Jeffrey Sevilla, proprietors of Music Matter, broached the idea to Deputy Mayor Kavee Tansukhatanon. The deputy mayor is a jazz aficionado and has often helped promote the art: so the Old Phuket Festival always features a jazz band; a cycling association event at Saphan Hin earlier this year had one (Kavee is secretary of the club); and a jazz singer from Finland recently performed a gala concert at the Limelight auditorium. The rest of the city council also see the event’s value – and well they should.

Phuket has an opportunity to make a name for itself in music, and in this regard the Jazz Day concerts are central. Phuket is the only town in Thailand to join the festival, held in 196 countries and Antarctica, every year. It’s now part of the city calendar of events.

Last April in Phuket more than a thousand showed up, and hundreds waited through an hour-and-a-half downpour, staying till the last act of 15 finished at 3am.

Each act had something unique to offer, as well, from the pop-inflected blues of Richard Wright’s Black and Blue Band, to George Cordeiro’s fusion-jazz rockabilly mix, the classic jazz ballads of famous Filipino saxophonist Eddie K, and the balls-out virtuosity of local hero Franco Payao’s Band. Thai

listeners were all abuzz at the charming and eclectic interpretations Kay and Jeffrey brought to several of King Bhumibol’s compositions, especially their stand-out version of ‘HM Blues’.

Those new to Thailand may be interested to know that the King, now 88 years-old, is a jazz performer and composer of international repute, having jammed over the years with such luminaries from the golden era of jazz as Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden, Stan Getz, Lionel Hampton and Benny Carter. Les Brown, Claude Bolling, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, among others, have recorded his numbers. He also started his own radio station, where, for decades, people could tune in to his Friday jazz programs, and led a jazz band, the Au Saw Wan Suk band, featuring performances by himself with stand-out Thai jazz players. The king’s midnight-till-dawn jazz get-togethers are well attested.

His Majesty has been a leading exponent of the art since 1942, so it is appropriate Thailand should be one of the world’s centres for celebrating International Jazz Day – and where better to do it than Phuket?

This year Jeffrey Sevilla, the organiser, plans to spread the event over four days, 27 - 30 April. The 27th is a Wednesday and every Wednesday sees a jazz jam at Music Matter – which this year will kick off the festival. The following day will feature a jazz workshop, tentatively scheduled for Satree Phuket School. On Friday evening (Apr 29) a monster music and gastronomic food festival will be held, and on Saturday (Jan 30) the culminating event – the Jazz Street Festival – will take place on Chana Charoen Rd in Phuket Town.

Bands are flying in from Chiang Mai, Bangkok, the Philippines and England; and, as usual, the cream of Phuket’s jazz players – a highly international array – will also perform. This year, owing to the great number of individual musicians who show up, in addition to the usual band-after-band format, there will be jam periods, with lineups that morph before your eyes. As Jeffrey says: “We’re all professionals here: we don’t have to practice a song; it’s more interesting – and more jazz – to just do it.”

In addition to music and food, the event is a showcase for pictorial and performance art, and handicrafts of all sorts.

Lots to love about The Hateful Eight Bangkok Post

I

t’s far from being his best, but Tarantino’s latest is a Western with a delicious and dangerous difference In the stewpot of Quentin Tarantino’s tough-to-chew ingredients: graphic violence, racial animosity (if not racist hyperbole), linguistic provocation (counting the “n” word has become a sort of a game), indulgence in profanity and political incorrectness of all stripe, then in The Hateful Eight, the nearly threehour-long film is largely set in just one room. Heads smashed, women bashed, scrotum busted, black-man-white-man paranoia in full display – the director’s well-oiled strategy is to couch his exploitation exercise in cynical black comedy and gabby digressions – those delicious, funny, grandiloquent lectures on history and justice that he lately seems to favour.

The central question in reading all Tarantino movies (especially his last historical re-imagination, from Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained and now The Hateful Eight) is this: How serious is it? Is this just a blood-splashed, hi-trash, tongue-in-cheek cartoon, or a super-clever, post-post-modern cinematic expression on thorny issues, such as slavery and the American Civil War? Tarantino gets away with it all because he teeters between both (if we discount his real-life polemics on race and police violence), milking his gift of dialogue writing and dramatic exaggeration to slip in and out of the shadow.

As usual, fans will rejoice in The Hateful Eight. But those not entirely indoctrinated in the black church of Tarantino will find this latest joint harder to stomach than Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds (and of course, Tarantino’s best work remains Jackie Brown). Where the narrative of the earlier historical films are sprawling and the revisionist allegory less unambiguous, the new film is narrow in scope, at some points claustrophobic, a chamber piece of amoral characters trying to out-mean one another. Sometimes you wonder what he is trying to get at. What, I mean, is this actually about? Race relations in post-Civil War

America, or the moral terror of the present-day US reflected through the period setting and the most American genre, the Western?

There are more than eight gunslingers, but I suppose Tarantino counts only those who are vicious and leaves out the innocent. In snowy Wyoming – a cowboy film set in the blizzard is quite ingenious – bounty hunter John “The Hangman” Ruth (Kurt Russell) is transporting his prized capture, the murderess Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to the town of Red Rock.

As the blizzard is chasing his stagecoach, Ruth picks up another bounty hunter, Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), and an ex-Confederate rebel and now sheriff, Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins). After a long conversation and a spatter of violence committed against Daisy – poor, crazy Daisy! – the party arrive at a haberdashery where they will stay and wait out the snowstorm. Inside, there are other travellers already holing up, including a professional hangman (Tim Roth), a cowboy (Michael Madsen), a Mexican (Demian Bichir) and an ex-Confederate general (Bruce Dern).

Once inside, while the storm is raging outside, it’s clear that there’s nothing left for these people to do but talk.

And talk they do, in verbal subterfuge and tall tales, in jokes and in menace, each of them sizing up the others’ allegiance and history. Tarantino’s talent as a writer of dialogue is duly celebrated – perhaps him and Woody Allen are the best, in a not entirely different way

in fact – and here the underlying obsession is the North-South, white-black divide of the Civil War, culminating in the terrifying scene when Major Warren confronts the old and racist general with a story of sexual and racial vengeance. One of The Hateful Eight’s running jokes, and maybe the kernel of its obscure message, is that Major Warren, a black man, is said to be a pen pal of Abraham Lincoln. The major goes everywhere with a presidential letter in his pocket, which he proudly shows to those who ask to see it, but its authenticity will be questioned.

Again, what is that about? A hope

for reconciliation in a divided country after a bloodbath? The difference between justice and vigilantism? The Hateful Eight is violent, wacky, entertaining, and somewhat meaner than I thought it would be, but Tarantino’s appropriation of history in order to bring forth his critique and wild fantasy is less convincing here – much less than Inglourious Basterds, which I think is another of his best films. That he is always heavy-handed, a maestro of wilful exaggeration, is a cinch; only that in The Hateful Eight, the natural steam that runs his madcap engine seems spread out too thin.

What we have, and what we have is enough, is the theatrical swagger of these assorted malcontents: the room becomes a den of colourful personalities with secrets to hide and scores to settle.

Jackson, as Major Warren, has the most delicious lines as usual. But it’s Jennifer Jason Leigh as the increasingly demented Daisy, and Walton Goggins as the jumpy Mannix, who stand out from this new collection of Reservoir Dog-like assassins. Now that the director has made three historical films that happily subvert factual respectability, perhaps the demon has been exorcised.

Tarantino is one of the most original filmmakers at work, and the irony that he “steals from every movie ever made” only compounds to the alchemy that makes modern American cinema, or at least a pocket of it, continue to breathe and live.

ritish International School, Phuket (BISP) Y ear 10 student Jakkree “King” Longlok signed professional terms with the island’s leading football club Phuket FC on Friday 15 Jan. The 18 -year-old Trang native signed a one-year contract with the local side to become one of four goalkeepers on their roster.

King started full-time training with the club last week at Phuket FC’s training ground in Chalong and at the 15 ,0 0 0 -seat Surakul Stadium, where the team play their home matches.

“I’m very excited that my dream of being a professional football player has come true so soon, and I’ve really improved since joining the BISP Cruz eiro Football Academy,” said King.

Ting Tong Bar leads the way in Patong Darts League DARTS

up with a crack squad at the start of the new year, we’ll see if their form continues further into the season.

Meanwhile, the Do Duck Bar from Kamala had a great away win.

They got a 10 -7 victory against Black Prince Bar. Tiger, the owner of the Black Prince Bar, was surprised by

his team’s loss but was happy to win the last leg of the match (the beer leg).

Another team going well with 2 wins out of 2 is CrossRoads Bar and Restaurant. They had a marathon game with Harry’s Steakhouse, just managing to clinch the match in the last few legs. The return game will be

Runs were hard to come by for TCT with Laguna bowling a tight line. At the first drinks break T T had crept up to 60 r uns.

After drinks, Iqbal Malik and Faroq Ahmad struck with the wickets of Andrew McMillan (27 runs) and Richard Bentley (4 2 runs). Laguna continued to bowl to a tight field and the pressure was telling in the 19 th and 20 th overs with TCT losing 3 wickets and in a spot of bother at 5 / 9 6.

Alex Runhaar fell to Roly Coooper 6/ 118 . G arry Lane and Anthony Dupont nudged the bowling into the gaps but were unable to find the boundaries. At the 30 over break, TCT were 6/ 14 1.

In the 32nd over, Dupont, dispatched Moomin Sanga to

TCT’s captain McMillan threw the ball to 7 different

bowlers in the first 10 overs in an attempt to either stem the ow of runs or pick up a much needed wicket. Sanga was the only wicket to fall prior to the drinks break, LBW from the bowling of Hossain Sylar.

Much like the first innings, the bowlers were able to restrict the scoring and then pick-up multiple wickets.

Manish Sadarangani made an uncanny duck from 14 balls and in the next over A Khan (60 runs from 4 8 balls) was Sylar’s second wicket.

Laguna walked off for a drink at 3/ 118 needing 10 0 to win from 20 o vers.

Damien Clowes was intent on hitting some much needed boundaries when play resumed. He found the rope twice in the 22nd over and a

few overs later he was dropped on the boundary just short of hitting the Indigo Pearl sign and winning a free brunch.

Cooper was bowled by Dupont in the 23rd over. Clowes and Mushtaq were dismissed in the 27th and 28 th overs.

At the 30 over drinks break Laguna required 5 7 runs with Sameer Khan and Stuart Reading at the crease.

TCT had several men on the fence for the last 10 overs and Alex Runhaar had the wicket of Reading. The wheels fell of for Laguna very quickly with the final 3 wickets falling in 4 deliveries after S.Khan was well caught in the outfield.

Laguna all out 173 from 33.3 overs.

TCT are now narrowly on the top of the Phuket Cricket League table.

ine Thais are busy polishing their skills with an aim to end the country’s barren run and lift a trophy this year on the LPG A Tour.

As they packed their bags and headed for the 20 16 season opening Bahamas Classic, which started yesterday (Jan 28 ), the Thais were also hoping that another successful year is in store for them.

Budsabakorn Sukapan, Benyapa Niphatsophon, Pannarat Thanapolboonyaras and Nontaya Srisawang earned their LPG A Tour cards after impressive results at last month’s Q -school.

It is the first time that Thailand has nine golfers on the LPG A Tour, and there is a growing expectation that the Kingdom may celebrate its first ever winner on the Tour this year.

The Thais have come close in the past but faltered shortly before crossing the finish line with last year’s Bahamas Classic seeing Ariya being elbowed aside following a three-way play-off.

Lewis, No.4 Lexi Thompson and No.10 Kim Hyo-Joo. The 20 -year-old Ariya is once again being seen as Thailand’s top bet to deliver an LPG A title.

At the age of 17, she squandered a great chance with a last-hole triple bogey to hand the title to Park InBee in front of the local fans at the 20 13 Honda LPG A Thailand.

Ariya, who is in her second year on the Tour, said she will be sparing no effort to win her maiden LPG A title this year.

“It is my second year on the Tour and I am more motivated and more experienced to make a bid for a title,” she said.

“I will also be making an all-out effort to move into the top 30 on the money list.”

Midway through the 20 15 season, Ariya went through a bad patch of nightmarish proportions when she missed the cut in 10 tournaments in a row.

She then fought back in an impressive fashion in the later part of the year and surpassed Pornanong to finish in 35th place on the money list, the highest among the Thai players.

Ariya said, “I realise how tough the fields are at the A tournaments and how good or bad I can

be. However, I do hope for better results this year.

I am confident and I have the potential to realise my dreams.”

Her elder sister Moriya, who ended the year in 64 th place on the money list, echoed a similar commitment, saying experience and good plans can help improve her title chances.

I learned a lot in my first three years on the Tour. I know what I need to improve and how to correct my game,” said Moriya, who recorded two top-10 finishes last year.

She added, My goal is to finish the year among the top 4 0 on the money list and, if possible, I want to win a title as well.”

The 27-year-old Pornanong, the most experienced Thai on the Tour, also came close last season when she finished oint second at the ortland Classic. She was also a runner-up at the LPG A Malaysia in 20 14 .

The Chaiyaphum-born Pornanong, who has been on the Tour since 20 0 9 , was disappointed with her performance last year when she failed to meet her target of finishing among the top 20 .

“Things did not go as expected last year and left me somewhat exhausted,” she said.

Worawut quits as FAT secretary Knockout, Buitrago clash Feb 4 FOOTBALL FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION of Thailand secretary-general Col Worawut Thongsringarm has resigned citing health and family reasons.

He said on Monday (Jan 25 ) that he recently had a medical check-up and the doctors advised that he should take a break.

anchester U nited may officially be keeping quiet about the future of Louis van G aal but the manager accepts his position is being increasingly called into question by the club’s fans.

The mood turned sour at Old Trafford during the course of Southampton’s 1-0 win over U nited on Saturday (Jan 23).

Some fans didn’t even wait until the final whistle to jeer Van G aal, venting their frustration as soon as Charlie Austin headed in the Saints’ 8 7th-minute winner.

Jeers rang out around the ground and the Dutchman received further taunts as he headed down the tunnel at full-time.

New team, new tactics delight fans in season opening friendly FOOTBALL

espite having only trained together for two weeks, the newly formed Andaman Dragon, Phuket FC, did not disappoint the thousand or so fans who turned out at Surakul Stadium to see what their new-look club had in their arsenal in a friendly match against Malaysia’s Kedah FC last Saturday night (Jan 23).

The first noticeable change when the team walked out onto the pitch was their new white and light blue kit, a big change from the mean green and red Phuket FC sported in the two previous years. However, green certainly wasn’t missing from the pitch as it was the visitors who were in green and black.

Both sides enjoyed a handful of chances in the first 45 minutes, but to no avail. But it was the visitor’s Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad who broke the ice on the 50th minute mark giving them a 1-0 lead.

However, despite the goal, and after the introduction of Phuket’s second-string squad, the Dragon seemed to get a lot more attacking action in the second half than the starting 11, and fans didn’t have to wait too long for an equaliser, which came from local striker Jay-

Despite the 1-1 scoreline, the majority of the fans at the game were impressed with the new squads – first and second string – who with their strong attacking fronts from both wings, and not to mention superior goalkeeping finesse have certainly set the stage for exciting things to come in the coming season.

Speaking to The Phuket News following the draw, Coach Pittaya “Odd” Pimarnman said that even though the team had not had much time to prepare for the game, he was still delighted that they had managed to come from 1-0 down

to earn a well deserved draw.

“Actually, we were not ready to play a match. We have only recently selected our players and we cannot say that we have a team yet. The players are only just starting to get to know each other, but they showed their true spirit. A lot of the players showed some great character and that what really makes me feel confident about what this team can achieve,” Coach Odd explained.

“I have seen how well they have gelled in such a short period of time, and this makes me really happy.

The result today (Saturday) has certainly boosted their confidence and that of all those involved with

the team,” he added.

At present, Coach Odd is focusing primarily on the player’s fitness and also on offensive tactics, something which past teams have seriously lacked. He expects that the fans will have more goals to celebrate in the coming season.

“We need to be strong and score as many goals as we can if we want to be champions. We still have a long way to go and we must ready for the future,” the Andaman Dragon coach said.

Phuket are set to host another friendly game against Thai Premier League side, Nakhon Ratchasima – the Korat ‘Swat Cats’ – on Sunday,

February 7, at Surakul stadium.

Speaking about that game, Coach Odd said that it will be a good opportunity for the team to improve.

“Even playing a friendly match I prefer to play with a stronger team than a weaker one. When we put ourselves up against a team like Nakhon Ratchasima we will see more clearly our weak and strong points,” he said.

“If we get beaten we will see what we need to improve, but if we can handle and can fight that kind of team, we are definitely making some progress,” he added.

Meanwhile, Phuket FC president MaAnn Samran has confirmed that the kit the team were sporting in Saturday’s game is the official home kit for the coming season. However, the shitrts are not yet available for fans to purchase. The official away kit has yet to be confirmed.

In addition, MaAnn confirmed, that in a bid to raise funds for the team, a Phuket Music Festival for Phuket FC is set to take place Valentine’s Day (Feb 14) at Saphan Hin. Ticket prices range from B600, B1,000 and B3,000 and are available from every OrBorTor and Municipality office on the island as from now. The concert is set to start at 6pm.
