New tourist, education visa rules now in force NEW VISA REGULAtions for extension of temporary stay in the Kingdom have been released and came into effect today (August 29). According to an announcement from the Immigration Department, foreigners granted a visa exemption as tourists for a 30-day stay will be able to get a one-time-only extension of stay for up to 30 days. If the foreigner’s application is denied no appeal for reconsideration will be allowed, but he or she will get a seven-day extension before having to leave Thailand. As for visas to study a private educational institution outside the official school system, extensions to permits to stay may be granted for up to 90 days, but the total length of stay must not exceed one year from the date of entry into Thailand. Foreigners involved in NGOs or foreign chambers of commerce, or performing duties for a public charity, can get repeat extensions for up to 90 days, but again, the total length of stay must not exceed one year from date of entry. The fee for extensions is B1,900. For further information, visit the Immigration website at bangkok.immigration.go.th or call 1111. Alternatively foreigners can contact any Immigration office. The new rules will mean that genuine tourists will not have to do “out-in” visa runs unless they want to stay more than two months.

FLOODING AGAIN Mayor’s tour reveals where the fault lies
T
orrential rain at lunchtime on Monday (August 25) caused flooding in a variety of places across the island, with the worst, predictably, being in Patong. There, parts of Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Rd, Sai Nam Yen Rd and Phang Muang Sai Kor Rd were flooded to 50cm or more. The Kathu Police Station was, as always, a submarine. The following day, as the flooding in Patong drained away, Mayor Chalermluk Kebsap led officials and naval officers on a tour of storm drains and the canal along Phang Muang Sai Kor Rd. They found that both storm drains and the klong were choked with mud and garbage, causing the klong to overflow. Mayor Chalermlak was also told that some of the pipes to carry storm water to the klong had been built with sharp angles in them, which collected debris, while others were smaller than the appropriate size. “In the past, before Phang Muang Sai Kor Rd was built, there used to be a water catchment area from which water could flow through the klong to the sea. There was also a pumping station in case of flooding,” Mayor Chalermluck said. “But when the road construction project began, the pump was removed. “I also found that the pipes underground connect in a zigzag way, which means water cannot flow smoothly.” In one place, she said, the straight line of the main storm drain is blocked, so the contractor dodged around the obstruction, building a dogleg with two right-angle bends. “How can it flow when it’s raining?” she asked.
Left, drone shot by Sompong Sakultup of Patong on Monday. Right, well at least his head is dry (at Kathu police station).
Mayor Chalermluk’s team raised manholes giving access to the storM drains. What they found was revealing. Construction continues, and Phang Muang Sai Kor Rd has become a soap opera with cranes falling onto buildings, holes full of water deep enough to swallow motorbikes and a road surface that often resembles a tank-testing course. But, says Mayor Chalermluk, “I can’t do anything because this is an old contract awarded by the previous mayor [Pian Keesin] and they [the contractors] have rejected any suggestions made by me.” So for the time being, the Mayor is proposing two solutions, one short-term and one longer-term. “The short-term solution is canal and storm drain dredging. Patong Municipality is already dredging the Wang
Khee On canal and the Bang Wad canal, and we will continue on to Rat-U-Thit-200-Pi Rd and Taweewong Rd, using two vacuum tankers,” she said. “The Phuket Office of Rural Roads (ORR) will take responsibility for Phang Muang Sai Kor Rd. I ordered them to do this three months ago, but nothing has been done yet,” she added. Teeraporn Jirarattanakorn, director of the ORR was repeatedly asked during the tour whether he would take the job on. He said, “Okay, okay, I’ll do it.” A long-ter m solution would be a three-metre-wide area either side of the canal to allow excavators in to dig out the canal, but many buildings have been constructed with
their walls right next to the canal. “In fact, by law, no building may be closer than three meters from a canal. So we will be issuing orders for work on buildings currently under construction too close to the canal to be stopped and for structures that breach the three-metre rule to be removed within 37 days.” The owners of the already completed Nara Grandeur hotel and associated buildings have been ordered to move out, but the 37-day notice has long expired, with no action taken. “Seven complaints – including one about the Nara Grandeur hotel – have been filed with Kathu Police,” Superintendent Pol Col Chi-
raphat Pochanaphan confirmed. Mayor Chalermlak named the owners of the building as “Kantanara” and “Maneesri”, adding that Kantanara, originally from Nong Khai, is well known in Patong as “Jae (sister) Boom”. “I would like to urge business owners in Patong to pay attention to the [needs of the] community. If everyone does things only for their own benefit, it could have a huge effect on the image of Patong,” she said. The Phuket Marine Office, which has responsibility for waterways, was due to inspect the three-metre area along canals in Patong on Wednesday (August 27) to identify infringements.

huket International Airport went on high alert just after midday on Tuesday (August 26) when a call was received saying that there was a bomb aboard an AirAsia flight that was due to land in five minutes. Air Asia flight FD 3003 left Don Muang international Airport in Bangkok at 10:55am and was due to land in Phuket at 12:15 with 167 passengers and six crew aboard. The bomb call came in at 12:10. Makin Petplai, the President of Airports of Thailand, which owns and operates the airport, issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon in which he said, “Officers immediately took action. When the flight landed the pilot was instructed to move the airplane to the Isolated Parking Area. “Passengers were evacuated and their bags unloaded onto the tarmac. Then security and bomb disposal officers had the passengers identify their own bags, which were thoroughly searched.”
Relieved passengers from flight FD3003 go through the arrivals terminal. The airline and the passengers all gave full cooperation, he said, and no bomb was found. “Everything is fine, nothing happened. It was a hoax call. The aircraft left Phuket Airport again at 3:08pm, arriving back
at Don Muang at 4:28pm,” said Mr Makin. “We have lodged a complaint with Tah Chat Chai Police asking them to track down the person who made the call,” Mr Makin said. “Our safety plans meet the
standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization, and we also have annual emergency simulations.” This year’s rehearsals were due to take place on Wednesday and yesterday (August 27 and 28).

hailand’s coup leader and prime minister, Gen Prayuth ChanOcha last Friday night (August 22) called for the Immigration crackdown on “out-in” tourist visas to be rolled back. During his weekly TV briefing to the nation, aired on all channels, the general said he had ordered the Immigration Police to be “more flexible” in its application of the law. Im migration recently cracked down on the number of times a foreigner may cross the border into a neighbouring country, turn around and re-enter the country on a new tourist visa. Many of the people doing multiple out-in tourist visas were believed to be working in the country illegally, often as teachers or tour guides. According to the English subtitles of his speech, Gen Prayuth said he was concerned that the clampdown – whereby people doing out-in visas are required to prove they are genuine tourists, or be barred from
Gen Prayuth: worried about a dearth of teachers and guides entry – was affecting schools and the tourist industry. “This is an ongoing problem that needs to be resolved, as it can lead to a shortage of English teachers and guides,” he said. The statement will shock many in the bureaucracy, on several levels. First, it is illegal to work while in Thailand on a tourist visa. Second, people working illegally pay no tax. And third, foreigners may not be guides in Thailand;
that profession is reserved for Thais only. T h e c r a ckd ow n wa s launched by the then-national commander of Thai Immigration, Lt Gen Pharnu Kerdlarpphon, who told The Phuket News on May 13, just nine days before the coup, that multiple out-in visa runs would no longer be tolerated. He has since been sidelined. The question of foreigners working as tour guides has long been a troubled one.
Although Thais alone may be tour guides, there are very few Thai guides who speak, for example, Korean or Russian, for which there is great demand. This fuels the number of people working illegally. Even if Immigration now turn a blind eye to out-in visa runners, it will not solve the problems of unqualified foreigners teaching languages, or foreign guides knowing nothing about the island’s history and making it up as they go along, leaving the tourists they instruct with a twisted understanding of Thai culture and history. Contacted by The Phuket News, Santi Pawai, director of the Phuket Office of Tourism and Sport, said that, lacking specific instructions so far, he would continue cracking down on illegal guides, otherwise he would leave himself open to accusations that he is not doing his duty as a government official. Thousands of foreigners in Phuket will be watching this issue with great interest.
extortion
TWO MEN POSING AS DSI officers were arrested on Tuesday (August 26) for extorting B100,000 from the Angel Massage parlour in Poonphon, Phuket Town, in April. Kanapat Kongmeang, 42 and Witsanusan Tippayatat, 47, were two out of four men who went into the massage parlour to use the services, including sex, and made a video of it. The men then showed the video to the parlour owner and demanded B100,000 or the video would be posted online. The owner handed over the money as he didn’t want bad publicity. The owner later made checks into the four men’s claim to be from the DSI and found they were imposters. Lt Col Korrawat Kongmeang of the DSI said, “Please contact the DSI headquarters if anyone claims to be from the DSI and demands money. The DSI never demands money from any business.” The other two men are still being sought. Eakkapop Thongtub

Applications open for reform council A
pplications can now be submitted for membership of the 250seat National Reform Council (NRC), which will come up with recommendations for Thailand’s new constitution and for a slew of new or revised laws to promote transparency and eradicate corruption. “The NRC will be the body that will rewrite the law for Thailand,” explained Phuket Election Commissioner Kittipong Thiengkunakrit at a press conference on Monday (August 25). There will be 77 province representatives in the NRC – one from each province – and 173 others chosen from various “non-profit corporations” such as schools, temples, universities or local government organisations. Applicants for the 77 province seats will apply in their home province, while the others must submit applications to Bangkok. “You can apply in person at the Phuket Election Commission [opposite the Phuket

Community Hall, off Narison Rd] and fill in the form,” Mr Kittipong explained. The applicants for provincial representative will be examined by a five-member committee, consisting of the Governor, the Chief Justice of the Phuket Provincial Court, the President of the OrBorJor, the President of Phuket Election Commission and a representative of the Phuket Provincial Community Council. Applicants will be whittled down to five names. These will be forwarded to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), which will choose one. Applications can be filed seven days a week between 8.30am and 4pm. The final deadline will be 4pm on September 2. The committee of five is expected to make its choices within two or three days of that date. “We will not reveal the names of the five people who are chosen,” Mr Kittipong added. As for applications for any of the other 173 seats,
Election Commissioner Kittipong Thiengkunakrit he explained, people should download the application from www.ect.go.th and send the completed document by EMS to the Office of the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) before September 2. Would-be NRC members (apart from the provincial representatives) must choose one of 11 groups they wish to work in. These are: political,
government management, law and legal, local government, education, economy, energy, public health and environment, public relation, social affairs or “other”. “Then the ECT will select 50 persons for each group (totaling 550) and send the list to the NCPO, which will select the final 173 people,” Mr Kittipong said. Anyone may apply provided they were born in Thailand and are over 35 years of age. Asked to clarify these qualifications, he said, “I have no additional detail for these conditions. “However, the people prohibited from applying for membership of NRC according to law are people who were found guilty by the courts on charges of government fraud, taking or dealing in drugs, or organising gambling. “So far, for Phuket, we have at least five people we think are suitable and we are waiting to see which of them will step forward. But the final decision will depend on the NCPO.”

Tighter interpretation of alcohol law coming Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
A
health official has confirmed details of a report this week by the Chiang Mai City News that indicates a much more rigorous application of the Alcohol Control Act of 2008 is on its way soon. Among the results will be: A ban on “cheer beer girls” – pretty girls who promote beers at events or in bars; Health warnings on all alcohol products (as reported earlier by The Phuket News); A ban on the use of used bottles of alcohol for decoration; An end to happy hours; A ban on promoting alcohol through word of mouth; A ban on alcohol-branded glasses, ashtrays, beer mats and other bar paraphernalia; and A ban on any promotion of alcohol consumption. Those breaking the law face hefty fines or even prison sentences of up to six months.
Beer girls (or vodka girls, above) are a thing of the past. Dr Prapa Nakara, Director of Non-communicable Diseases at the Phuket Public Health Office, whose task it is to keep an eye on alcoholrelated issues told The Phuket News on Wednesday (August
27), “We work on alcohol marketing anyway. This is not a special crackdown because this law was passed in 2008. “When it comes to advertising in publications, on billboards or elsewhere each
case has to be considered in terms of what the motivation is. “If the motivation is to get people to drink alcohol, we will check it out and report the case to the Governor of Phuket. The police are responsible for upholding this law. “I have come across cases such as public announcements along the lines of “Buy one, get one free.” These are not correct. If they say “We didn’t know about that,” our response is that any alcoholrelated business owner must know. “Of course, I don’t know about every place [on the island] where they promote alcohol openly so if you have the information and photos let us know and we will investigate. “What happens after that will depend on the police and the courts.” Those wanting advice on the precise rules about advertising, promotion and marketing of alcohol can get it from the Phuket Public Health Office.

Drive to regulate tour firms starts TOUR AGENCIES AND OPerators could face a six-month suspension of business if they are found to be contravening regulations, the new head of the Southern Office of Tourism Business and Guide Registration (TBGR) has warned. Santi Pawai – who is also head of the Phuket Office of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports – also warned that officials will check more than 1,500 tour companies in Phuket. The checks began yesterday (August 28), after tourism business and tour guide representatives were briefed by Mr Santi’s office at a conference on Wednesday (August 27). “The TBGR Southern Office has never before inspected tour operators in Phuket. Some
of them may be doing business they are not registered for,” Mr Santi told The Phuket News. “If we find any office operating without a license or with an office in a different location from the one on the license, they will be shut down for six months,” he warned. At the meeting on Wednesday a new body was launched, the Phuket Tourism Business Association (PTBA) “in order to improve the standards of tour operators in Phuket,” said Mr Santi Pawai. “After the PTBA has been set up, it will be easy to control the standards and discuss problems, and it will be easier to coordinate with screen tour agencies who want to apply for a tourism license from us.”

Paiboon challenges top official to name names T he president of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (OrBorJor) has challenged a senior national official to reveal details of allegations the official made on his Facebook page on Saturday (August 23). ML Panadda Diskul, appointed secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office six days after the coup, caused uproar among local officials across the country when he posted, in Thai, “facts that everyone might not know; facts so shocking that some may not be able to believe them.” He explained, “Some local government organisations did not pass the audit to qualify a prize for good local government organisations … That wasn’t a surprise to me, because I know that some local government organisations squander money as if it is their own money.” He continued, “I was told the president of one OrBorJor bought first class tickets and ordered hundred of thousands of baht worth of wine.” Worse, he said, “That person also used a close friend

ML Panadda: ‘I know that some local government organisations squander money as if it is their own money.’ Photo Ministry of Interior as a nominee to buy a house in Europe.” He concluded. “Whoever wants to spend their life on these luxuries should do it from the profits of private business. As local politicians, they should not destroy the reputation of Thai local government.” But ML Pannada did not name names. This, local politicians say, tarnishes all 77 OrBorJor in the country, along
with the thousands of municipalities and sub-districts. Phuket OrBorJor President Paiboon Upatising told The Phuket News, “I think he should say exactly who did this – not blanket all 77 provinces. He is talking about just one person but when he says it like this it makes all of us look bad.” With a laugh, he added, “But I know it isn’t me because I don’t drink alcohol.”
Others, too, were irritated. The Provincial Administration Organisation Council of Thailand (PAOC) issued an open letter headed, “Following the post by ML Panadda Diskul that might destroy the image of local government organisations,” and urging all local council staff to wear black in protest. In Phuket on Monday morning, no one at the OrBorJor was wearing black – apart from Mr Paiboon himself, who often wears a black suit with his pink ties. “I didn’t urge my staff to wear black,” Mr Paiboon said, adding, “I think [ML Panadda] is an adult and a reasonable person. He should apologise or show evidence [of his allegations] as soon as possible.” Then he issued his challenge: “I can’t do the ice bucket challenge because of my [medical] condition, but I will donate B100,000 baht to charity if ML Panadda will reveal the name of the person he is accusing. “Ultimately, I think an apology should be enough. We are ready to forgive him.”

Early bid for Miss Universe crown
Sunnanipa ‘Namphet’ Krissanasuwan, was stripped of her third place title after risqué photos of her showed up on social media.
THE FIRST MISS PHUket Universe contest has been officially launched with a function and fashion show at the Kalima Resort and Spa in Kalim. “We are going to find a perfect woman to represent Phuket in supporting culture and promoting tourism in Thailand and other countries,” said Chanitnan Tephabutra, the pageant’s PR officer. “Miss Phuket Universe will also represent the island in the Miss Thailand Universe contest. We’re more likely to have a winner if we prepare early,” she added. Contestants, who must be Thai nationals, can regis-
ter for the pageant between February 6 and 12 next year at the JK Modeling and Event Office. The full list of entrants will be announced at Central Festival Phuket on February 13. The number of entrants will be narrowed down in the second round, from March 20 to 25. The final round and crowning of Miss Phuket Universe will take place at Central Festival Phuket on March 26. “The total prize will be worth more than B300,000, and the winner will get a crown of real pearls designed by Prima Pearl,” she said.
Ms Chanitnan noted that stringent background checks will be carried out at an early stage in the contest. “Our committee will screen all entrants carefully in order to avoid any kind of bad behaviour or negatives emerging after the competition.” Perhaps emphasising this point was the presence of Sunnanipa ‘Namphet’ Krissanasuwan, who placed third in the Miss Universe Thailand earlier this year. Some may recall that Namphet was stripped of her second-runner-up title on July 21 after risqué photos of her surfaced in social media.

V/Gov Sommai: ‘The atmosphere in the meeting wasn’t combative.’ of coming and going, with council members exiting from time to time to call “someone”. At one stage Dr Sommai was asked to leave the room for about 30 minutes while some finer points were negotiated. “The atmosphere in the
meeting wasn’t combative,” Dr Sommai said after the talks ended in agreement. “Representatives from the Patong Council team and [the mayor’s] management team agreed to step back [from confrontation] for [the sake
of] living together. “After the discussions, the B449 million was cut by B5 million, and other projects costing [nearly] B5 million were proposed,” she added. The cuts agreed to were: Cleaning, cut from B8 million to B7 million. Garbage transport cost, cut from B5 million to B4 million. Budget for the traditional Patong Festival at the beginning of the high season cut from B7 million to B4 million. It is proposed that the savings should be applied to canal dredging (up from B1 million to B2.5 million) and installation of traffic lights on Patong Hill (B4 million). Dr Sommai said, “They agreed that this is the best way forward for Patong, and all of council will now vote in favour of the adjusted 2015 budget.”
One of the bungalows on Koh Raet that must be demolished.
Island ‘owner’ told to demolish bungalows CONSTRUCTION ON EIGHT rai of land, valued at B40 million on Koh Raet off the Ao Por Grand Marina, was ordered to stop on August 18. The owner, Phithirath Pithipat, was ordered to remove the structures already built, for which planning permits had never been issued. “The inspection followed a complaint of illegal construction on public land. We found three cottages already completed and one under construction,” said Panya Sampaorat of Pa Khlok Municipality. Ms Phithirath argued that she had done nothing wrong. “In 2008, we bought the right to occupy the eight rai of land for thousands of baht from Uncle Rat, who is an Ubon Rachathani native and who lived on this land for more than 30 years,” she explained. “We bought this land just to make a living for our [three] families from agriculture. We have no plan to sell it,” she added. “And we thought that by using bamboo the structures could not be regarded as permanent.” Navy Cdr Pornprom Sakultem said “As I keep saying, only government documents can prove a person’s right to occupy land. This land has no documents. The occupiers
should follow the legal process. “If you believe this land has been occupied for a long time, you should contact the Thalang District Office. Officials can locate [aerial] photos and check how long the land has been occupied by checking the ages of trees planted on it,” he explained. Mayor Panya agreed, but added that the Land Department “can record the right to occupy the site, but no document can be issued. “But,” he added, “this is just the right to farm the land, not build on it or develop it.” “At this stage, I am ordering you to stop all construction, move off the land and remove all structures in 37 days, as required by the law.” Notices to quit were posted on the buildings and Ms Phithirath signed documents agreeing to comply with the demands. “Although my family will not have a place to stay, I have to obey the law,” she told The Phuket News afterwards. There was irony in the whole episode. Less than 100 metres away, separated from the site by a wall, enormous part-completed buildings, originally part of the failed Barama Bay hyper-luxury villa project looked down at the goings-on.

Phuket beach clean-up now ‘90pc completed’ Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th
N
inety per cent of the clearance of the island’s beaches is now complete. The remaining 10 per cent is going through the courts. This was one of the messages at a press conference staged on Saturday (August 23) at the Royal Thai Navy Third Fleet base on Cape Panwa. It was a high-level meeting that included Phuket Governor Maitri Inthusut, Vice-Governor Jamroen Thippayapongtada, heads of various local councils (including Thawee Tongcham, currently facing a date with the court on charges related to taxi mafia activities in Kata-Karon), Airport Director Prateuang Sornkham, Damrongtham Centre director Prapan Kanprasang, Pol Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin (who arranged Mr Thawee’s arrest), and others. Preparation was meticulous, with all officials required to leave phones and guns outside the room and chairs labeled with names so that everyone sat in the correct place. Gov Maitri began the proceedings with a rundown of actions and progress so far. “The main issues are regulation of

We are also working on other land issues. “Anyone who has comments or opinions can give them to the Damrongtham Centre. “Next, we will check all structures to see whether the owners have been
paying their taxes correctly.” Asked how many people had been adversely affected by the beach clearances, he replied, “Cherng Talay, Patong, Karon and Kata are the main areas where people have been affected. For example, in the Patong area there are 62 sun bed operators, 192 masseuses, and 92 small vendors.” He added “We will manage things so that they have an area to work in legally, but we have to check supply and demand so that these people can make a living.” Army Lt Gen Walit Rojanaphakdee, dressed casually in
white shirt and dark trousers, told the press, “For us, people come first, but everything must be done according to the rules. Asked when the action on land grabbing would finally see action taken against “influential” figures, the general said, “It depends on the law. If they have been breaking the law, they will get their just desserts. “We will solve the problem of influential people making money off the backs of the ordinary man in the street.” Referring to theft of state land, he noted, “Forests are important. Without them, there are floods when it rains and water shortages when it does not rain.” Asked how anyone could be sure that beaches would not again be invaded after they have been cleared, he replied, “We are focusing on getting all officials to work according to the rules. “They must be responsible in the way they perform their duty. Then we can focus on how we can get citizens to trust officials.” Asked how many cases are expected to be tried by military courts, Gen Walit said, “Military courts will be used in some cases only. Generally the civilian court system will handle cases.”
Airport health officials ramp up Ebola watch HEALTH OFFICIALS AT Phuket International Airport (PIA) have increased their watch for incoming passengers carrying the deadly Ebola virus, focusing on passengers arriving from four Western Africa countries – Nigeria, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. As of last week (beginning August 18) 2,473 cases of Ebola had been reported in those four countries with 1,350 deaths – more than half of those who contracted the disease. “We have been told to boost surveillance of all tourists arriving in Phuket who may be carrying the virus, especially those arriving from the four countries,” Phuket Provincial Health Office (PPHO) Chief Dr Kajohnsak Kaewjarus told The Phuket News. “A special lane has been set up for citizens of those four countries, with signs asking them to identify themselves to us before they go to immigration,” he added. “Airports of Thailand @thephuketnews
(AoT), Immigration, airlines and PPHO officers are coordinating to get the names of passengers from those four countries entering Thailand at PIA or connecting to other flights,” Dr Kajohnsak explained. “After they come through the special lane, a medical team from the Department of Disease Control, backed by police, will check their medical condition and record their name and address in Thailand, in order to send it to hospitals near where they are staying,” he explained. “The hospitals or a special team will keep an eye on them – but not intruding or making them feel that they are being controlled – until they go on
to their next destination.” To prevent Ebola coming into Phuket, officials are also coordinating with other airports in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia that have connecting flights to Phuket. So far, Phuket has had two tourists arriving from the four countries on the list. One was Nigerian and the other Filipino. “Both of them have finished their trips to Phuket and have returned to their countries,” he said. “People should not worry about an outbreak of Ebola in Phuket at this stage – it is our job to prevent that,” said Dr Kajohnsak. “Enjoy your holiday in Phuket. Leave us to worry about Ebola prevention,” he concluded.

Monk hits colleague with a hoe A BUDDHIST MONK WAS rushed to hospital on August 22 after being attacked by another monk wielding a hoe in Wat Khanan in Thepkrasattri. The monk, Phra Manop Youngprayoth, 55, suffered cuts to his arms and a broken left leg. Witnesses said the attack came as Phra Manop was on his way to his kuti (room) after evening chants inside the bohd, or main temple building. His attacker, another monk, hacked at him several times with the hoe before running off into the dark. Police are asking more questions in order to find the cause of the attack, and the culprit. hy does Phuket cope so poorly with heavy rainfall, given that the island is located in a part of the world with the heaviest annual precipitation in the world? Images of Patong Police Station in particular being repeatedly flooded in recent days must have had many a visitor aghast at the apparent inability of the island to cope with its generally predictable meteorological conditions. The reasons for this are the reasons for so many of Phuket’s other woes: greed, idleness, corruption, incompetence, and a lack of respect for existing regulations. Buildings are constructed too close to klongs, thereby preventing them from being regularly dredged. The regulation requires structures to be at least three metres away from any klong, but it is merrily disregarded, meaning such

waterways get clogged up and are therefore are ineffective in routing rain-waters efficiently into the sea. Likewise the rainwater drainage system is a shambles, with much of it blocked-up with concrete and debris, but apparently without too much official concern even when built-up areas are frequently flooded. A lot of people who should be addressing the problem are looking away, or – dare we say it – being given “incentives” to look the other way. Even though the low “green” season sees fewer visitors, there are still considerable numbers of them. Most come from countries where a heavy three-hour downpour does not result in their streets turning into canals and car-parks into ponds because of utterly messed-up drainage systems. Another distressing feature of this time of year is the use
of the cheap, flimsy – clearly designed for no more than two uses only – raincoats that too many are fond of. The in-built obsolescence is shamefully wasteful, especially given that Phuket is having a hard time time disposing of all its waste, especially biodegradable plastic (some of which ends up in those storm drains...). An Old Raincoat Won’t Ever Let You Down, as the title of the 1970 Rod Stewart album has it. The advice is as excellent as this vinyl-era recording. Thailand’s “chuck-away culture” comes as a shock to many outsiders, but the concept of a raincoat that ends up in the bin after a couple of days needs fixing almost as much as Phuket’s drainage system. It’s high time Phuket managed to adjust to nature’s moods rather than ignoring them and then muddling through the consequences.

Bangkok to host anti-drug summit he Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) will host a meeting in Bangkok with Asean counterparts in the middle of next month amid new efforts to quash drug trafficking in the capital and elsewhere in Thailand. ONCB secretary-general Permpong Chaovalit said the ONCB is inviting chiefs of anti-drug agencies in nine Asean countries to attend the meeting, where it hopes to exchange policy ideas and develop regional strategies. “We cannot get rid of drugs on our own. We have to cooperate with our neighbouring countries,” Mr Permpong said. Land blitz targets five resorts A COMBINED SECURITY force yesterday (August 26) swooped on five resorts built on land next to the Srinagarind dam in Kanchanaburi in the junta’s latest operation to clamp down on land encroachment nationwide. The force – consisting of more than 100 soldiers, policemen and forest protection officials – was divided into five teams to mount simultaneous raids on the five properties that are valued at more than B100 million. The first team raided ARK Resort situated on a 35-rai plot of land by the dam. Six houses sit on the property. Krisana Montha, 31, who was found at the property and detained for questioning, told the authorities he was hired to take care of the resort for the actual owner, Alisa Chailert, who is said to live in Phuket. The second raid occurred at Suan Pistawan Resort which is situated on a 27-rai plot of land near the dam. This resort also contained six houses. The ban was announced on Tuesday (August 26) by the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) after it approved B8.5 billion from the 2014 budget for a total of 7,853 local administrative bodies. NCPO spokeswoman Patamaporn Rattanadilok Na Phuket said each local body would initially receive one million baht based on the national development strategic plan. The entire sum would be used in tasks related to building basic permanent infrastructure, quality of life improvement, jobs and skills development and tourism promotion in order to expand the local economy, Ms Patamaporn said. But members of the local bodies would not be allowed to spend any of this funding on organising both domestic or overseas study trips.

Indonesia passes law to tap volcano power T
he Indonesian parliament on Tuesday (August 26) passed a long-awaited law to bolster the geothermal energy industry and tap the power of the vast archipelago’s scores of volcanoes. Made up of thousands of islands stretching from the Indian to the Pacific Oceans, Indonesia is home to some 130 volcanoes and is estimated to hold around 40 per cent of the world’s geothermal potential. However it produces only a tiny fraction of its energy by converting underground heat into electricity, and lags far behind others such as the United States and the neighbouring Philippines. Red tape and legal uncertainty have long held back the industry and obstructed much-needed investment, but the government hopes the new law will speed up the development of the sector. Most i mp or t a ntly, it stipulates that exploration for geothermal energy and

Photo: Richard Bartz development of plants is no longer considered mining. It was regarded as such previously, which meant the industry faced problems working in Indonesia’s vast tracts of protected forest, where there is much geothermal potential but mining is illegal. The law also stipulates higher prices for electricity
produced by geothermal, following complaints from companies developing plants that tariffs were not enough to cover the high cost of production. “Indonesia’s need for energy keeps increasing,” lawmaker Nazarudin Kiemas, who headed a parliamentary committee on the new law,
was quoted as saying on the legislature’s website. “There is abundant potential for geothermal energy.” Outgoing President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono must sign off on the new law, but that is expected to be a formality. Indonesia is estimated to have more than 28,000
megawatts of geothermal potential but is currently producing just over 1,300 MW of its electricity from the clean source. High cost has long been one of the major obstacles. A geothermal plant costs about twice as much as a coal-fired power station, and can take many more years in research and development to get online. But once established, geothermal plants like the one in Kamojang on the island of Java can convert the endless supply of volcanic heat into electricity with much lower overheads – and less pollution – than coal. Yudhoyono has also focused on geothermal as part of his plan for the nation to slash greenhouse gas emissions by 26 per cent from 2005 levels by 2020. Indonesia is the world’s third-biggest greenhouse gas emitter, due its use of dirty fuels to produce electricity and to rampant deforestation. AFP
Legendary temple bell claimed found A TEAM OF MYANMAR divers claims to have discovered a legendary bell in the murky depths of the Yangon river – with the help of dragon spirits – in the latest twist to a 400-year-old drama that has gripped the nation. Dozens of divers, equipped only with goggles and plastic oxygen hoses, have plunged into the fast-flowing waters in search of the long-lost Dhammazedi Bell, in a spectacle that has generated scepticism but also attracted lines of spectators along the riverbank since the search began earlier this month. The group is the latest in a series of treasure hunters eager to try to raise the near-mythical giant bell, which is said to have sunk without trace after being stolen from Yangon’s revered Shwedagon Pagoda by a Portuguese mercenary in the 1600s. It was reputedly loaded onto a boat which sank under the weight. “After asking permission from all noble persons and saints, we definitively declare that we have found the Dhammazedi bell,” said lead organiser San Lin. However he has not so far provided any proof.
Divers plunged into the fast-flowing waters in search of the long-lost Dhammazedi Bell. Photo: Htoo Tay Zar The search has attracted criticism among Myanmar historians, some of whom question the very existence of the bell. Organisers have rejected hi-tech equipment in favour of spiritual practices, performing rituals on their boat in the centre of the swollen river to appease dragon spirits said to be protecting the bell. “It can be found if we organise and research systematically. But it cannot be found like this – following astrolo-
gers’ advice and inviting nats (spirits), dragons and galouns (mythical birds),” Chit San Win, of the Myanmar Historical Commission, told reporters. San Lin, who says he originally saw the bell on the riverbed during a 1998 salvage attempt and has received funding from a local private bank, vowed to lift the bell from the water within days. Fashioned mainly out of bronze, the Dhammazedi bronze bell is said to have
weighed 294 tonnes – about the same as the maximum take-off weight of a Boeing 777. Historians believe it was donated to the Shwedagon Pagoda in 1484 by the Mon King Dhammazedi, who ruled the southern part of Myanmar at the time. It was then believed to have been stolen from the revered temple by Portuguese merchant Filipe De Brito e Nicote – known locally as Nga Zinka – who had seized control of an area south of Yangon and wanted to melt down the bronze to make cannons. While no definitive proof has yet been uncovered of the bell’s existence, the search operation has garnered a following of hopeful supporters. “I came here to encourage the salvage operation and divers – I really want them to get it,” said housewife Aye Aye Mar, who had travelled for hours from her home to witness the salvage attempt. But others are more cynical, with social media buzzing with posts mocking some local media reports that appeared to present as fact the involvement of a dragon in the salvage. “Can I get the phone number of the dragon?” asked one of many similar posts. Soviet-era star vilified over defying Moscow on Ukraine Paris relives joy of ’44 liberation N on-conformist rocker Andrei Makarevich walked a thin line in Soviet times but his outspoken stance on Ukraine has seen him savagely pilloried by the Russian establishment. Russian media and officials have rounded on Makarevich, 60, for having “supported Kiev’s anti-Russian policy” by playing a concert for refugees earlier this month in the eastern Ukrainian town of Svyatogorsk after government forces retook it from proRussian separatist militiamen following weeks of fercious fighting. The attacks on Makarevich by state-run media reached such a fever pitch that the musician pleaded Monday (August 25) to Russian President Vladimir Putin to put a halt to them. Makarevich, the frontman of the legendary band Mashina Vremeni (Time Machine), has spoken out against Moscow’s policy on Ukraine since February, when Russia began presenting the uprising in Kiev as being led by fascists.
The maverick Andrei Makarevich. Photo by Bogomolov.PL “I don’t remember such an orgy of propaganda and lies since the best Brezhnev years,” Makarevich wrote on his blog at the time, referring to the Soviet leader of the 1960s and 1970s under whom communist ideology was particularly rigid

and reactionary. Makarevich knows that period well. He formed Time Machine in 1969 with fellow Moscow students enamoured with The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. As Soviet authorities did not approve of rock music,
homemade copies of the band’s music were passed hand-tohand by fans. While Makarevich never openly confronted Soviet power, the lyrics of Time Machine’s songs were littered with allusions to freedom and double-meaning satirical swipes at communist society. However Makarevich was quick to criticise the Kremlin over Ukraine and took part in an anti-war demonstration in March. Russia annexed the Crimea from Ukraine in March and has provided moral and – Kiev and the West claim – material support to pro-Russian rebels who later seized swathes of the eastern part of the country. Some 2,200 people have been killed in the fighting, with and 400,000 more fleeing their homes. Russia’s state-controlled television stations went into overdrive against Makarevich over the concert he played in Ukraine. One national TV news programme launched a nineminute tirade that said the
concert “is not simply selfexpression, it is propoganda support” for Kiev. Another called Makarevich “one of the 13 friends of the junta” among Russian artists and lawmakers. A deputy from the ruling United Russia party, Yevgeny Fyodorov, called for Makarevich to be stripped of his state medals, including the prestigious “People’s Artist” honour. Another lawmaker, Dmitry Litvintsev, said that Makarevich could be kicked out of the country, as some Soviet dissidents were. While Makarevich has remained defiant, he pleaded to Putin to put a stop to the media storm against him. “For three weeks the flood of dirt and slander against me in the media hasn’t stopped,” he wrote in an open letter published on the website of the Moskovsky Komsomolets daily. “Mr President, I implore you to halt this orgy tarnishing my name,” Makarevich wrote. PRESIDENT FRANCOIS Hollande led tributes to the French Resistance on Monday (August 25), as Paris celebrated the 70th anniversary of its joyful liberation after four long and bitter years of Nazi occupation in World War II. Soaked by a downpour on the Ile de Sein off northwestern France, Hollande hailed the bravery of the tiny island’s population, who refused to accept their country’s occupation and fled to Britain to join the fight for France’s liberation. “A tiny parcel of land in the ocean, the Ile de Sein was in the vanguard, an example, an illustration of French patriotism,” he said. “The message from Ile de Sein is that there is no danger, no difficulty we cannot overcome as long as the will is there, as long as people gather together,” said Hollande. The speech kicked off a day of celebration that climaxed with Parisians marking their city’s wartime liberation. AFP

Yet more bad news for MAS
THE BAD NEWS KEEPS COMing for Malaysia Airlines (MAS), which was recently delisted in preparation for a radical overhaul following the disappearance of MH370 in the Indian Ocean and the shooting-down of MH17 over Ukraine. A total of 537 passengers died in the two incidents. On August 4, ETB Travel News reports, a senior member of the cabin staff on a flight to France was arrested in Paris on allegations by a passenger of inappropriate sexual behaviour. The airline has issued a statement confirming the arrest and the allegation, adding, “As soon as we or our representatives have been granted access to meet with the employee in person, we will provide a further update on the steps being undertaken by the airline.” And on Monday (August 25) AFP reported that an MAS flight from Kula Lumpur to Tokyo had to turn back when there were problems maintaining cabin pressure. Malaysian Department of Civil Aviation director-general Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said, “It was not able to maintain the right pressure differential for the comfort of the passengers. It was not a major problem.”

AirAsia sees profit rise sixfold in Q2 M
alaysia-based AirAsia has announced a sixfold increase in second-quarter net profit as Asia’s budget travel leader increased revenue despite what it called a “challenging” aviation environment. Net profit was 367.2 million ringgit (B3.45 billion), up from 58.3 million ringgit in the same quarter of 2013. AirAsia said the jump was mainly due to foreign exchange gains on borrowings. But it said revenue also grew five percent to 1.31 billion ringgit (B12.3 billion) as passenger numbers increased slightly. While AirAsia’s domestic rival Malaysia Airlines faces potential collapse after two disasters this year, AirAsia last month signed an agreement to buy 50 long-haul A330-900neo passenger planes from Europe’s Airbus, in a deal worth US$13.75 billion (B413 billion) at catalogue prices. AirAsia CEO Aireen Omar attributed the second-quarter performance in part to moves to cut down on less profitable flights. She said the airline also held firm on pricing in the face of “irrational” price competition from rivals.
AirAsia’s fat profit came mostly from foreign exchange gains on loans. “AirAsia continues to be disciplined in an industry where irrational competition exists,” she said in a statement. Founder Tony Fernandes said in a statement the outlook should improve in the second half of the year, predicting that competitors would move to more “realistic” pricing. AirAsia said overall results in the quarter would have been better if not
for losses suffered by its Thai, Indonesian, and Philippine subsidiaries. Such struggles have not halted Fernandes’ expansionist ways. The company announced last month it would re-enter the Japanese market in a tie-up with e-commerce giant Rakuten, jumping back into the country following its bitter split last year with All Nippon Airways over a budget carrier joint venture. Inheritance tax mooted for the rich THE REVENUE DEPARTMENT wants a new tax on the rich: a 10 per cent tax on inheritances worth more than B50 million. A well-informed source said that the proposed inheritance tax was awaiting consideration by the Council of State before it is tabled to the National Legislative Assembly for deliberation. Revenue Department directorgeneral Prasong Poonthanet said that PM Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha had already given an instruction that the inheritance tax should not affect the poor and would not affect people’s savings, otherwise it might discourage people from saving. He set two more criteria: the tax must be collected from the inheritance and not from the heirs; and there must be a single flat rate of 10 per cent. Meanwhile, Kris Jinaveejarana, director of the Fiscal Economics Office, disclosed that revenue collection for the first 10 months of the fiscal year (Oct 1 to Sept 30) amounted to B1.67 trillion, representing a drop of 7.3 per cent, or B132 billion compared with the same period in the previous year. NokScoot takes one step closer to 2015 take-off NOK AIR AND SINGApore’s Scoot have successfully acquired Pete Air Co, which will allow the two airlines to speed up registration and operating permits for their joint venture, NokScoot. It is understood Pete Air was acquired in June as it already had an airline operating permit from the Thai Department of Civil Aviation and this would speed up the process to get the new airline airborne early next year. Late last week, they announced the official name change of Pete Air to NokScoot Airlines Co Ltd, along with the appointment of Piya Yodmani as the company’s CEO. Scoot Pte Ltd and Nok Airlines PCL each hold 49 per cent of the stock in NokScoot. The remaining 2 per cent is held by Pueannammitr Co, a company established by the new airline’s management. The tie-up could turn out to be a very significant for Thailand’s low-cost airline sector as it creates a business unit led by Thailand’s Nok Air and a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines (SIA), arguably one of
the world’s top airlines. SIA has an extensive and profitable network that NokScoot can exploit to feed traffic to domestic destinations in Thailand via SIA’s Changi hub. It will seriously challenge Thai Airways International (THAI) which has traditionally held the lion’s share of international traffic connecting to Thailand’s domestic destinations. Through Nok Air, the SIA group has access to all Thailand’s domestic destinations. The move is a double-edged sword for THAI. As a major shareholder in Nok Air, it stands to gain, but Nok Scoot will add to the competition that THAI is having a hard time battling. Piya has held management positions at both THAI and Nok Air. He said: “The current competition in the low-cost airline market is intense, with passengers having a wide variety of choices for destinations and airlines. This is the current challenge for low-cost airlines which we keep in mind.” Nok Air CEO Patee Sara-
sin has also been appointed as chairman of the executive committee of NokScoot. He said: “Our hope is that NokScoot will be trusted and loved by passengers in the manner that Nok Air achieved in the past 10 years, making it now the number one premium low-cost airline of Thailand. “The joint venture between Scoot and Nok Air will enhance our route network to make it more competitive in the market, and offer passengers more choices in the future.” NokScoot will operate flights with a fleet of Boeing 777-200 aircraft from Bangkok’s Don Muang International Airport to medium- to longhaul destinations. Scoot operates mediumand long-haul no-frills flights between Singapore and Sydney, the Gold Coast, Bangkok, Taipei, Tokyo, Tianjin, Shenyang, Nanjing, Qingdao, Seoul, Hong Kong and Perth. The Nok Air tie-up will allow Scoot to offer passengers connections to 21 domestic destinations in Thailand as the first part of the joint venture. TTR Weekly thephuketnews

Tourism ‘to bounce Plastic debt and defaults growing back from August’ T
he economic analysis centre of the Thai Military Bank (TMB) predicts that the tourism industry should rebound and return to normal from this month onward. In a report issued this week, TMB said the industry had hit bottom, with daily average arrivals at Suvarnabhumi Airport dropped from about 42,000 in January this year to about 20,000 in late May. By mid-August, however, the number of daily arrivals rebounded to 42,500 after the military curfew was lifted on June 13, the report said. Campaigns being launched by the Tourism Authority of Thailand plus the waiving of visa fees for Chinese and Taiwanese tourists at B1,000 a head until October would help boost the purchasing power of these tourists, already worth about B1.2 billion a year. The report, however, urged those responsible for boosting the country’s tourism business to encourage more Europeans, Americans and Russians to visit the kingdom because their

average daily spending while in Thailand is as high as B70,000. Arrivals from these countries have declined steadily. Meanwhile, travel industry leaders, by and large, have shown they are in favour of Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha taking the role of Prime Minister. Travel industry leaders recognise that the general has been a stabilising force since the May 22 military coup and deserves praise for tackling
mafia-style control of taxis and other services for tourists that has sullied the country’s tourism image. Unlike elected governments that appeared to turn a blind eye, he ordered a crackdown on airport taxi services and scams that target tourists at most major resorts. The Tourism Council of Thailand, the Association of Thai Travel Agents and the Thai Hotels Association
warned, earlier in the year, that political chaos on the streets of the Thai capital was undermining the tourism business. Now the three major associations are more confident that recovery can be realised by the end of the year. They view the appointment of General Prayuth as an appropriate step to reshape Thailand’s political landscape and usher in an era of calm and stability. MCOT Online, TTR Weekly
Economy dodges recession in Q2 THAILAND’S ECONOMY grew 0.9 per cent in the second quarter, dodging recession after the military ended months of political deadlock with a coup and promised to unshackle spending. Between April and June the economy crept back to life with 0.9 per cent growth after shrinking 1.9 per cent in the preceding three months, the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) reported. On a year-on-year basis, the economy grew 0.4 per cent, the NESDB said. The junta has tied its le@thephuketnews
gitimacy to improving the economy after months of political protests froze spending, scared off tourists and battered consumer spending. Since seizing power on May 22, Gen Prayuth has opened the coffers – pledging to kick-start stalled investment projects, including major train and road links, and paying state debts to rice farmers to help spur agriculture. Despite the positive momentum, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy still looks set for a poor year. The NESDB clipped its growth outlook for 2014, fore-
casting 1.5 to 2.0 per cent expansion, down from a previous estimate of 1.5 to 2.5 per cent. It said the political turmoil of the first five months of 2014 would likely drag the economy to “perform below its potential” over the full year, with key auto and tourism sectors still flagging. Visitor numbers to Thailand are down just over 12 per cent year-on-year, despite desperate efforts to reassure tourists that the “Land of Smiles” is safe. Gen Prayuth has proposed a B2.57 trillion budget for 2015 to the army-appointed National Legislative Assembly.
He said the spending plan, which awaits the NLA’s approval, is around B50 billion more than 2014 but pledged it will be disbursed with “capability, efficiency and transparency.” Critics of the elected former government of Yingluck Shinawatra said her government squandered money on populist policies such as a flagship rice subsidy scheme. “Growth prospects have brightened since the military takeover,” said analysts Capital Economics. “Nonetheless, growth is unlikely to return to its trend rate any time soon.” AFP
THE OFFICE OF THE National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) has reported that credit card debt is growing in Thailand, as are defaults on personal loans in the second quarter of this year, because of growing unemployment in the period. NESDB deputy secretary-general Chutinart Wongsuban said that in the second quarter employment dropped by 2.8 per cent and employment in the agricultural sector fell by 17.9 per cent due to drought. She said, however, that unemployment was not of great concern because onethird of it involved those who had never had jobs. Despite the high unemployment rate, incomes still increased. Household debt is more of a worry. Ms Chutinart said
that incurred household debts slowed down in accordance with economic situations but defaults rose, especially with consumer loans. The amount of credit card debt outstanding for longer than three months increased by 28.4 per cent. She urged the government to speed up improving farm productivity; to comprehensively tackle narcotics; to reduce traffic accidents involving minibuses, to push for a law to regulate surrogacy; and to promote appropriate agerelated development among Thai children. In the second quarter, she noted, the overall number of crimes dropped, but crimes against life, assaults and sexual crimes tended to be more violent. MCOT Online

Belly button lint: Aussie Graham Barker has been collecting the fluff from his belly button for over 26 years and he’s not about to stop anytime soon. The bizarre naval lint collection began when the 45-year-old librarion became curious about how much fluff a person produces in their lifetimes. So he set out on a lifetimes mission to answer the question. One thing is clear: thermal wear helps produce the most lint. Barker’s entire collection weighs just 22 grams and fills three glass jars with a fourth on its way. Hitchhiking robot reaches destination chatty robot with an LED-lit smiley face sent hitchhiking across Canada this summer as part of a social experiment reached its final destination Thursday (August 21) after several thousand kilometers on the road. HitchBot, assembled from household odds and ends by university professors Frauke Zeller and David Smith, was to reunite with its creators at an art gallery in Victoria, British Columbia having crossed more than 6,000 km. The pair planned the trip hoping it’d provide insights into societal views of robots. “This project turns our fear of technology on its head and asks, ‘Can robots trust humans?’” Zeller told reporters in late July when HitchBot’s trip began.

With a head encased in a transparent cake saver, set atop a plastic beer pail wrapped in a solar panel, and swimming pool floats for limbs, the automaton was designed to be fully dependent on people. “Our aim is to further
discussion in society about our relationship with technology and robots,” said Zeller. HitchBot began its trip on July 27 in Canada’s Atlantic port city of Halifax, after being picked up by an elderly couple in a camper van. Images and messages
posted on Twitter showed the robot thereafter with its rubber boots and yellow latex gloves being driven westward across forests, mountains and prairies, making stops to fish and camp, attend a wedding and a native pow wow – a traditional aboriginal celebration. Its journey, courtesy of a host of strangers, has inspired art, clothing and a knockoff made of cardboard and string – affectionately dubbed HitchBox. To celebrate the end of its odyssey, a party will be held at the Open Space gallery, which supports experimental art. Researchers were to analyze comments posted on social media to see what they can surmise about the public’s attitudes concerning robothuman interactions. AFP
Bun in stomach, rather than oven for China panda ‘mum’ HOPES THAT TINY PANDA paws would be seen in the world’s first live-broadcast cub delivery were dashed Tuesday (August 26) when experts suggested the “mother” may have been focusing more on extra bun rations than giving birth. The slated star of the show, giant panda Ai Hin, had last month shown signs of pregnancy at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Centre, according to state news agency Xinhua. A live broadcast of the event was planned, but Xinhua said her “behaviours and physiological indexes returned to normal”, citing experts saying she experienced a “phantom pregnancy”. The breeding centre, in China’s southwestern province of Sichuan, commonly moves pandas which are thought to be pregnant into single rooms with air conditioning and around-the-clock care. “They also receive more
Man collected nail clippings since 1978 buns, fruits and bamboo, so some clever pandas have used this to their advantage to improve their quality of life,” Wu Kongju, an expert at the base told Xinhua. Phantom pregnancy is said to be common among the endangered animals, and many bears continue to display pregnant behaviour after noticing the difference in treatment they receive, Xinhua said. Six-year-old Ai Hin experienced reduced appetite, less mobility and a surge in hormones when her “pregnancy” was first detected,
the news agency said, before further observations concluded it was fake. The giant panda’s natural habitat is in the mountainous southwest of China. But the bears have a notoriously low reproductive rate and are under pressure from factors such as habitat loss. China has about 1,600 pandas living in the wild and another 300 held in captivity. “Only 24 percent of females in captivity give birth, posing a serious threat to the survival of the species,” Xinhua said. Still, his collection has gotten him inside the newest “Ripley’s Believe It Or Not!” Book, titled Reality Shock! set to be released on September 9. “I haven’t told [my exwife],” Gibson said. “I’m waiting until I can show her the book. Marley received a state funeral in the Jamaican capital in 1981, one that combined elements of both Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari tradition.
Bob Marley: voice of the voiceless across the Developing World, and hero of social justice.
O
n the evidence of the countless number of Reggae bars featuring large portraits of Bob Marley, on Phuket and dotted around Thailand’s tourism hotspots, the totally unacquainted with the late singersongwriter might assume he was Thai. As almost all of us know, he was Jamaican, and, moreover, the first truly global star to have emerged from the Developing World. Although his songs have endured, the Bob Marley Story has faded somewhat. Time to revisit this extraordinary narrative. When he came into this world in 1945 (and while Jamaica was still a British colony), the infant Marley was named Nesta Robert Marley. However, later in life, Marley reversed his middle and first names after hearing someone comment that Nesta could be viewed as a girl’s name. Growing up in the Jamaican capital of Kingston, Marley was locally dubbed “White Boy” because his mixed-raced origins that were clearly evident in the overwhelmingly dark-skinned community. Marley left school early to become an apprentice welder. After sustaining a workrelated injury however, the youngster turned to a career in music. And so capricious fate delivered to the world one of the most iconic and justly venerated musicians ever. And a pioneer who put reggae on the global map. Among his many other accomplishments, Marley established the mighty record label Tuff Gong, named after the nick-name he gave himself to replace “White Boy”. More-
over, today, Tuff Gong is the umbrella name for many other businesses related to the Marley family, and the singer’s cultural and commercial legacy. Although of humble origins, through his artistic successes Marley suddenly found himself a wealthy man. However, the well-todo Marley remained a man of principle and grace, and he was extremely generous with his earnings, gifting considerable sums to various charities and the poor in his homeland, as well as friends and family. His passion for football was almost as strong as his love of music, but it was on a friendly knock-around soccer-pitch that led
to Marley learning of the cancer that would eventually kill him. After a minor injury sustained playing football, doctors discovered a malignant growth in one of Marley’s toes. They recommended amputation, but Marley refused on the grounds of his Rastafarian faith. Subsequently the tumour spread. Cancer ultimately brought down this gifted man, gracious soul, voice of the voiceless across the Developing World, and global icon of peace and social justice – not to mention, creator of gorgeous, sun-kissed melodies that have enthralled millions. Internationally touring even close to death, Marley wanted to end his days in his homeland, but didn’t make it, succumbing to his fatal illness in Miami, on May 11, 1981, at the age of 36. Nevertheless Jamaica did become his final resting place Marley received a state funeral in Kingston, one that combined elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari tradition. The great man was then buried with three items close to his heart, his Gibson Les Paul guitar, a soccer ball, and a bud of his favourite herb. Though cruelly taken from us too early, he lives on – not only through his music but also because of his well-known upbeat take on life. Outside Jamaica his spirit endures perhaps nowhere more than in Thailand, another tropical nation that has adopted him as a symbol of all that is good in the brotherhood of man. And that digs the infectious charm and laconic grooves of his timeless music, like so many others.

Taking the brand new BMW X5 out for a Phuket road test
WISE WHEELS Richard Jones richard@pixy.asia
The X5 is lighter, quicker, more powerful, economical and spacious than its predecessors. Much of this has been achieved by the greater use of highstrength steel and aluminium in the chassis and body.
The CBU xDrive30d X5 SAV (say that 10 times fast) sells in Phuket for about B6 million, competively priced and featuring the best and latest in power, build and luxury. Richard Jones is the Managing Director of BuyCar24 and can be contacted through www. buycar24.com

T
he 2014 BMW X5 has landed in Phuket. The X5 is a midsize luxury SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle), though BMW brand the X5 as a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) to emphasize its on-road ability despite its large size. With three models (all diesel) available through Barcelona Motor in Phuket, we had the pleasure to test-drive the xDrive30d, which boasts a 3.0-litre, six-cylinder common-rail diesel engine churning-out 254 hp; enough to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, 0.7 seconds faster than the previous X5. First introduced in 1999, the X5 was BMW’s first 4x4 and proved to be a game changer, paving the way for other luxury car makers to release crossover vehicles onto the market. Now in its third generation, the X5 is lighter, quicker, more powerful, economical and spacious than its predecessors. Much of this has been achieved by the greater use of high-strength steel and aluminium in the chassis and body and even magnesium behind the dashboard. The X5 is designed for comfortable family travel and upon entering the vehicle you find the standard leather upholstery is immaculate. Both the front seats are power adjustable and offer dual-zone climate control. There is ample headroom all-round and, for those of you with larger families, a third row of seats is among an extensive list of optional extras. Standard on all X5 models is the iDrive infotainment system, which is an absolute joy to use and is arguably the best all-round in-car system on the market today. The interface is intuitive, the controls simple and well-positioned giving you finger-tip access to a remarkable suite of features and functions. Switching to the satellite navigation system, the huge 10.25-inch screen mounted on the dashboard displays with impressive clarity the familiar map of Phuket Island and accurately follows every twist and turn of our journey. Heading up the highway off of Phuket, a painless bluetooth sync with my phone and I was browsing my contacts with the multifunction touch-sensitive stylus and making a handsfree call back to office. Back to concentrating on the road and just in time as the skies darkened and the heavens opened. There was no need for concern though, as the sunlight faded, the headlights turned-on and as the rain started to fall, the oscillation of the wipers adjusted to the strength of the downpour, without any input from the driver.
The three different driving modes help morph the X5 from a comfy highway cruiser (Comfort) to an impressive performance sedan (Sport) to a fairly economical large town car (Economy), all at the flick of a switch. This can be mostly attributed to BMW’s highly acclaimed 8-speed automatic gearbox which quickly shifts and seamlessly extracts the best performance from the engine. Off-road, the hill-descent control does exactly what it’s meant to do and the LCD screen displays the real time roll, pitch and yaw of the vehicle. For those who venture too far down that sandy road to the beach, the X5’s ability to transfer up to 100 per cent of available torque to an individual wheel should help you get out of sticky situations. The new 2014 BMW X5 outperforms
and is more fuel efficient than its rivals, namely the Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover Sport, and in Thailand you will find it is cheaper as well. Though using the word “cheap” may be somewhat contentious due to the heavy import duties and taxes applied to foreign cars. The xDrive30d we test drove is priced at B5,999,999 CBU (Completely Built-Up) – meaning it’s imported as a complete vehicle – and is available now. The other models available here are the sDrive25d and the xDrive30d M Sport. Reservations for these can be made now with delivery later this year and prices from B4,599,000 to B6,599,000. coordinating meeting was held on August 20 to bring together local, national and regional groups campaigning against Phuket’s planned “dolphinarium” which is set to open later this year, near the Phuket Zoo on Soi Palai in
Chalong. Held at the JW Marriot resort in Mai Khao, Wednesday’s (August 20) meeting followed two film screenings of The Cove (2009) at Central Festival Phuket and Prince of Songkla University (PSU), on August 14. The documentary highlights the barbarism of the killing and selling of dolphins to satisfy the fish market and stock the various dolphin shows around the world. Chairing the meeting were several local and regional key players, including local environmental organization SEEK representatives Nick Anthony and Sean Panton, who is also the CSR Director at JW Marriot, as well as Dr Chantinee Boonchai, environmental lecturer at PSU Phuket; with guest Nancy Gibson, CEO of the Love Wildlife Foundation (Bangkok) and other local leaders, media, activists and business reps also in attendance. As a preamble, local eco businessman and activist, John Gray of John
Gray’s Sea Canoe presented a video of a successful model dolphin tourism project in the Filipino city of Puerto Princesa. Established by Mr Edward Hagedorn, the project allows dolphins to stay in their natural habitat and encourages low cost, sustainable tourism with the support of local fisherman who are supplied with mobile phones. This initiative set the scene for a potential long term strategy for the ecotourism market, which stresses the importance of nature and has likely economic benefits; a plan that could prove to be a model solution for Phuket. Mr Gray, a respected and pioneering eco-tourism operator and campaigner in the greater Phang Nga Bay area as well as Vietnam, challenged the notion that the new dolphin show will be within “legal bounds”. “I see a lot of chinks in the armor. Water quality – where are they getting their water from? It’s two kilometres from the sea, and a very small tank inside, I have my doubts and see a lot of problems that they [the operators] will need to address, especially in the market,” he said. Sean Panton agreed with Mr Gray’s assessment on the issue. “If this [dolphinarium] goes through, it’s going to Phuket back 20 years. Over
the years a lot of hard work has gone into establishing our reputation for marine tourism. We’ve had our challenges, but the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation is a good example [for marine conservation initiatives in Phuket]. “We’ve been working for 13 years to protect and raise awareness of turtles along with the Phuket Marine Biology Centre’s Endangered Species Unit. And as dolphins are an endangered species in Thailand, it baffles me how an outside company can come in and run a [tourism and entertainment] facility
with endangered species.” Nancy Gibson echoed Sean’s sentiments: “I think it is a horrrible thing. It [dolphins in captivity] is not something we need in Thailand. It’s something we’ve fought against for several years now. “I’m surprised we’re even having to face such a project popping up in the middle of a major tourist destination that is supposed to be ‘eco friendly’. Asked what approach Phuket should take to address tourists who might come to Phuket to participate in shows

that depend on animal captivity, Nancy was stern. “To be honest, I don’t think tourists are coming to Phuket for this... just to watch dolphins jump through hoops or wear silly hats. They’re not getting any educational experience out of it. There are wild dolphins here in Thailand, and they [tourists] can see them in the wild. It’s a much more wonderful experience to see dolphins in the wild.” Within the broader context of community economic well-being and sustainability, the meeting focused solely on the impending possibility and likelihood of the show opening. The group was informed about the suspected foreign investor, who is believed to already be involved in a similar show in Pattaya and saw this as a commercial response to the emerging Eastern European and Chinese tourism markets in Phuket. The group is steadfast in its belief that this facility will damage the local fishing industry, the image of the island and local tourism. The group is well aware of the popularity of dolphin shows (shades of Flipper) particularly amongst the youth, but argues that the opposite is required in education (love of nature), not the restriction of a creature to a tank in which they have to live and perform.

DOLPHIN SLAUGHTER SEASON ARRIVES
Septemper 1 is ‘Dolphin Day’ and 6am is also the start of the Taiji hunting season. Sadly the following “slaughter quota” has been announced, with fishermen of Taiji having been allocated the following 1,938 cetaceans for 2014/2015 hunting season: •134 Pacific white-sided dolphins; •450 Striped dolphins; •509 Bottlenose dolphins; •400 Pantropical spotted dolphins; •261 Risso’s dolphin; •114 Short-finned pilot whales; •70 False killer whales. What’s not slaughtered in cold blood, inside/outside the above quota, will be captured and shipped to dolphin shows around the world, possibly to Phuket’s planned attraction.
The group was informed that animal welfare legislation is under review in Thailand and that it is the Department of Fisheries’ responsibility to ensure compliance of premises standards and make sure the source of any dolphin purchase is within legal bounds. The group is also aware that no public scrutiny can take place as a security fence has been placed around the site. The group outlined the current mobilization of opposition, including a petition signed by 250 PSU students to the Governor, the support of the International Union for the Conservation of
MEETINGS MINUTES (IN SHORT)
IN PHUKET 1. Newspaper clips, TV – sustained media campaign 2. PSU education campaign, letter to the governor 3. The Cove screenings (SEEK) IN BANGKOK 1. Wildlife foundation dialogue with Department of Fisheries about permit status 2. DoF is in charge of the process: Three steps 1) paper work permit to be a zoo or operate wildlife show 2) committee to check the facilities about standards 3) Obtaining the animals. Engage CITES to establish where the animals will come from?). 3. Animal Bill has been lodged to NCPO but a lot of things have been taken out. 4. Campaign on Change.org by Sea Sheppard gain more than 13,000 names, need to contact the person who set it up
FACTS 1. The facilities are mostly completed 2. Tuna companies sign up to be a dolphin safe island so having a dolphinarium will be bad for the Tuna industry, they are preparing to do a letter to DOF 3. Zoo, there is no regulation, it’s very broad. DNP is usually the one that deals with zoos. 4. Animal welfare not covered in existing law, there are no animal rights. 5. NGO can nominate a person to be in a committee,
Thai AGA 6. IUCN is willing to support Love Wildlife if needed 7. NGOs have MoUs with the government
WHAT NEXT? 1. Need social media campaign against the captivity of dolphins (other animals too) 2. Need to increase awareness among tourists and stunt demand. 3. Survey community, tourists to show opinions of the people 4. Get into schools to show The Cove and get signatures to gather numbers 5. Get this message to powerful audiences: Navy, TAT, Governor, Area 15, DMCR, Marine 5, NCPO, Local head of the military, Phuket Customs, Phuket Tourist Association, Diving Community, Airlines, Turtle Foundation, Retail operators like Tesco, Shark Guardians, DNP, Elephant, Flight Center to understand that dolphinarium is bad for Phuket tourism and for the community. 6. Need to play the card of : -Damage to the community, fishery industry -Damage the image of the island and to tourism -Damage to local benefits to tourism industry for the locals -Offer alternatives such as dolphin tours in the wild -Goes against sustainable tourism 7. Get names from Sea Sheppard from campaign on Chang.org 8. We need everyone who is against the dolphinarium to write a letter stating their standpoints to send to Nancy.

Nature (IUCN), the 13,000 names on a Campaign for Change organized by Sea Sheppard in addition to the many letters of support from school, community groups and businesses. The meeting concluded with a plan to conduct a strong public campaign, engage students, businesses and local media. Attendees were unified in their commitment to building a strong eco-tourism industry in the interest of a sustainable Phuket that is internationally recognised for both quality of tourism delivery and a commitment to international best practice. Attending the meeting as an independent was Dr Peter Harris of the Asia Pacific Environment Network, who provided inspirational insight. “The debate regarding the opening of a dolphinarium is more than just a debate on making tourist dollars out of a popular captive creature zoo. It is a discussion on the future of the island itself. There is no doubt that the community needs to expand its economic base
and recent market trends have shown growth from Eastern Europe and Asia. “This is a debate about whether this island can be sustainable, compassionate and caring and a beacon to the world. The island is endowed with much beauty, charming people and a cultural way of life. The envy of man. The island can be a center that is known for the way in which it supports the land and the sea and all the creatures in it. That is very attractive indeed,” he said. As for the next step, activists will be quite busy in the coming months as the paperwork to the new attraction is processed in preparation for the import of the dolphins. And as for what we residents and tourists in Phuket can do to make a difference, John Gray offers the most obvious and practical solution for those who truly understand the plight of dolphins and the underlying agenda of the multi-billion dollar trade: “Total boycott … [should it open], nobody should go there,” he concluded.

D
o you need to get in shape? Phuket’s Thanyapura can help you get a fitter, healthier, sexier body in just eight weeks. The right combination of cardio training and strength-building exercises is the key to burning fat and turning it into muscle. Thanyapura guarantees to whittle away your waist with its new eight week Fat Burn and Body Transformation fitness programs commencing September 15. Any successful fat loss program is going to take you out of your comfort zone, both in the gym and in the kitchen. Effective fat loss workouts can be energy depleting and physically and mentally taxing, so it’s imperative to follow a nutritional plan that’s filled with healthy, real foods (no processed, fast foods). To maximally reduce your body fat percentage, you’re going to have to start in the kitchen. You may have heard the saying that abs are made in the kitchen, which is true – you can lose fat without even having to pick up a single weight or run a single step. But in order to build muscle, increase muscular strength and cardiovascular fitness, you’re going to have to hit the gym. So, to stimulate as much fat loss as possible, the Thanyapura programs consist of three full body workouts per week with three days of cardio homework and one day off. Participants will train with the same trainer three days per week in a class of up to 12 like-minded people for the entire eight weeks and enjoy a supportive community atmosphere. Participants will be given dietary guidelines and be required to keep a food diary. The key to success is lifestyle education regarding food choices and exercise balance so the desired results can be achieved. During Week One, participants will have a body fat/weight test with measurements of critical areas recorded. Diet guidelines and
After Before food diary will be explained. “Before” photos will be taken and most importantly, participants will officially confirm their “Agreement” (commitment) to follow the eight-week plan on paper and on video. Thanyapura are running a competition on social media to find an overweight man or woman to use as a “poster child” for the Fat Burn Program. Entrants are required to explain why they’re the perfect candidate to win a Fat Burn program in less than 50 words and email: Chris.Weeks@Thanyapura. com by September 10, for a chance to win. The Fat Burn and Body Transformation programmes are priced at B25,500 (B455 per day) and Thanyapura Club members receive 30 per cent discount. The price includes three group training sessions per week, diet guidelines, trainer contact/support, weigh in and body composition analysis and guaranteed results.
If a customer follows all guidelines completely and does not achieve results after the completion of the eight week program, they will be offered to train one-on-one with a trainer until they start to achieve results. Follow the plan and we guarantee results! To register, and for more information, contact: Chris.Weeks@thanyapura.com

I
f most Thai food can be likened to an art-house film with subtle characterization, Fat Boy Grill’s fare is more like one of the Expendables action movies, with well-loved flavours leaping off the plate in full Dolby surround sound. Turning towards Laguna at the Cherng Talay police station, Fat Boy Grill is just 50 metres along on the right, and in some good culinary company. The first appearance is of a Mediterranean trattoria with the red gingham tablecloths and rustic, open interior. You have three options – the entry area opens to the street, there is a smaller air-conditioned section and then the larger seating area where patrons are kept cool with ceiling fans.

The menu is huge and covers a number of international cuisines and pricepoints that aren’t scary. The island has enough high-end restaurants that take themselves very seriously indeed. Fat Boy Grill is exactly what it seems – great, familiar food that will satisfy the hungry and the food-snobs alike. We had a fixed three-course meal starting with Fat Boy’s Tiger Prawn Tartare. I have to admit, it didn’t quite look as appetising as it tasted; a roulade of fresh tiger prawns, avocado and capers. But there was a wow-factor in every mouthful. Served with a sidesalad and croutons, this really set the scene. Then again, we needed something snazzy to get us ready for what was to follow. It landed on the table with all the subtlety of the Terminator entering a poodle-clippery. On the menu it’s listed as ‘Big BBQ Rib-Rack’. And it was. In reality it is a brutal assault on all your senses. Was this all for us? Yep! The Fat Boy Grill staff also have a certificate they happily issue to anyone who can clean the ribs off their plate all by themselves – you’d want to be very hungry. I dare you. But it smelt amazing as well, our host explaining that the marinade had a “secret ingredient”. Maybe it was rocket fuel … it had a hint of spice

and complimented the ribs perfectly. The servings of finely-chopped sauté potatoes and the side dish of garlic potato topped off a protein and carbo loading to satiate any appetite. There’s a selection of special sauces for your ribs; we chose the blue cheese. It could have fed four, the two of us were shamed into leaving a few ribs untouched. But wait, there’s more. If someone on another table had sampled the dessert before us, I know I would have seen that look on their face. In a Harry Met Sally moment, I would have whispered to the waiter, “I’ll have what she’s having.” The Chocolate Lust Cake was exquisitely decadent. If the hundreds-and-thousands decoration was a bit overly “cute”, it certainly made up with a full-frontal chocolate assault, with ice-cream. The menu is as varied as it is clever and inclusive. Pastas, lots of meat dishes, enduring favourites and some clever Thai fusion. The signature dish is Spaghetti Tom Yum Gung and there’s also Spicy Andaman Seafood Spaghetti. There’s also a straight-up Thai menu with all the best-known local dishes. As they say at the Fat Boy Grill, “Come hungry, leave happy.” We did. www.fatboysgrill.net

Brownie-on-a-stick: melts in your mouth Tanyaluk Sakoot reporter2@classactmedia.co.th

H
ungry? How about a cute, creative brownie on stick that looks like chocolate ice cream. Though, it won’t melt on the stick, it’ll still melt in your mouth – these local, home-made desserts are offered with several flavours and toppings, including white chocolate with almond, dark chocolate with strawberry and others. The Phuket News staff got the opportunity to sample some of them recently, and not a crumb remained. Pimyada Tiensripojamarn, creator of the new “iGallery” brownies-on-a-stick, said baking is one of her favourite hobbies. Having learned much of what she knows from famous chef “Yingsak” in Bangkok, Pimyada has gained enough skills and confidence to transform a hobby into a part-time job.
During the day, she works a marketing job with Kasikorn Bank, but after work she devotes most of her free time to her cute and scrumptious little desserts. “I got inspired to to do iGallery about two months ago. “I was enjoying some brownies with friends, then, I felt I wanted to have ice cream too. So I bought and shared the ice cream with my friends whilst also eating brownies. Then, I got the idea to make brownies-on-a-stick, just like ice cream.” In addition to the above flavours, she also makes a killer brownie with white chocolate and almond topping, which she anticipates will be popular among Phuketians. It’s not only brownie sticks she does, but birthday cakes too.
For now, she continues to experiment with new recipes, hoping to find many more winners. “My latest batch are brownies with raisins. It’s mouth-watering, and I hope others will like it too.” While Pimyada doesn’t have her own shop yet. You can order via her FaceBook page: facebook.com/iGallerymay or call: 088-7610713

Phang Nga’s World Academy Executive, educator Philipp Graf von Hardenberg talks about his philosophy and visions to make the region a learning destination Steven Layne editor3@classactmedia.co.th
Especially in this part of the world, a good education is essential for the people to be able to break out of the cycle of poverty.
Located in the lush hills just outside the sleepy district centre of Kapong in Phang Nga, Yaowawit is a boarding school, life skills education and professional development centre.
W
hen the waves of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami finally subsided on that fateful, unforgettable Sunday, a different kind of wave soon followed course. Pouring onto the battered and evervulnerable shores of Aceh, Sri Lanka, India, and especially right here in Thailand, this wave – one of love and humanity – brought with it millions in volunteer hours, and billions in charitable donations for disaster relief assistance and aid to reinforce and rebuild affected communities throughout the Asian subcontinent. Nearly a decade on, many of those foundations and organizations have since faded, if not failed. One of the more successful initiatives, that continues to bear fruit today, is Yaowawit School, a unique boarding-school in Phang Nga that was built for not only tsunami-affected students, but for extreme poverty-stricken youth from throughout Southern Thailand. Nestled in the lush hills just outside of the sleepy Kapong district center, about half-an-hour’s drive inland from Ta Kua Pa, Yaowawit is much more than a school – it’s a life-skills learning centre, eco farm and hospitality training centre, and not to mention as an educational and professional development centre in the making. And it’s a self-sustainable community model complete with its own deep-well water pump and filtration system with sufficient, clean water flowing year round, on top of boasting its own 300 kilowatt solar farm that drastically reduces its dependence on unstable grid energy. Built through the Children’s World Academy
Foundation, the centre is the initiative and vision of renowned German hotelier, educator and philanthropist, Philipp Graf von Hardenberg. Philipp, who was recently appointed as President and CEO of Phuket’s Thanyapura, invited The Phuket News to visit Yaowawit. The boarding school itself houses and feeds some 120 students, aged 4-17 and some of the region’s “poorest of the poor”. In addition to receiving a worldly Thai, English and German founded education, the youth and parent residents also actively participate in the operation of the on-site “Lodge” hotel and hospitality training centre, and tend to the eco-farm complete with herbs, produce, poultry as well as palm oil and lemmongrass plantations. Here, the Phuket News sat down with Philipp for a heart to heart to learn about the school and his philosophy and vision.
What does Yaowawit mean?
When we started all this, under the Children’s World Academy Foundations (one registered in Germany the other in Phang Nga) HRH Princess Sirindhon was involved from the early stages. She had visited the site with me and I asked her to help us to find a Thai name. Two days later, she sent me an SMS, saying the school should be called “Yaowawit”, the meaning of which reflects the name of the foundation “Children World’s Academy”. We’re very grateful to Her Royal Highness for gifting us the name.
How much was the initial investment – what are your operation expenses?
Yaowawit has been an ongoing process, I like to see it as an education movement, not a static project. We started with five buildings and added more and more as we could afford and per our needs. Now we have more than 20 buildings and for all the building and furnishing, we spent about 2.5 million Euros so far (about 100 million baht). The annual running costs are about 300,000 Euros for 120 children. The reason why it’s so high is because we are running a school, a boarding
house for all the children, an agriculture and a hospitality learning centre, we are still in the process of building up all our education and social business programs. For example, just this year, we invested about 25,000 Euros into the farm – mostly for the ditches, check dams and irrigation. Then because of the hotel, we invested a lot more money than you would in a normal school. For the school itself, the construction cost was about 5 per cent more than it would be to build any normal government Thai school. We know this because after the tsunami, many government schools had to be rebuilt and were partly built using international donations – some of the same benefactors contributed to our project, so we could compare the cost – which every baht/penny needs to be accounted for. Still, even for only being 5 per cent more than ordinary Thai schools, we are building with a boarding and living space for many kids, and not to mention a theatre too. As a private school, we have received some assistance from the government for the past six years, but it’s not enough to even cover a third of our teachers’ salaries. Governments don’t like to support private schools – it’s like this in most of the world. Even though private schools save the government by taking kids out of the state school system, they don’t return what they had saved. Most of the money to run Yaowawit, therefore, comes via CWA foundations, from sponsors and our partners. Now coming onto 10 years since the tsunami. Most projects started after the tsunami are now dead ... gone. The reason why is those projects could not sustain due to expenses. People tend to donate for hard costs – stones, construction materials, wood, furniture, and so forth, but not so much for soft costs. But it is these soft costs, these ongoing costs which keep a place going. What keeps a school going is managers, teachers, the food, medical and school equipment. That said, we encourage people and companies to donate directly to the school, if not just for helping us, the children and society, but that charitable thephuketnews

donations are tax deductible by as much as 200 per cent.. We have various sponsorship programmes, starting with child sponsorships ... This is popular type of sponsorship world wide. On a regular basis, you get pictures, letters, and here sponsors can even visit their child. The enterprises – farm and hotel – will also help to help sustain the ongoing costs.
How has your hotel and business background transferred over to education?
I’ve been a business manager and entrepreneur all my life. I started working with schools and boarding schools about 15 years ago, initially in Germany, serving on the advisory boards of several German schools. What I learned very fast was, that with any kind of operation in which you offer services, you have to run it like a business. If you don’t run it like a business, you’re bound to make the same mistakes that many organizations do, that is run it to the point in which it cannot sustain itself, stand on its own two feet. Many small foundations and NGOs that started here after the tsunami made this mistake and they no longer exist as a result. I apply my entire knowledge of how to run a business into the schools, whether PIA (at Thanyapura) or here at Yaowawit. So what we do is we have to have a very straightforward and clear business planning, and we have to have a very clear and structured human resources programme. Teachers and all other employees of a school need to understand exactly what you expect. Otherwise, you’ll have many one-man shows, which is not complimentary to achieving the overall school goals and mission. I never get involved in the day to day teaching, in what teachers do in the classrooms, but as a member of the executive team we talk about everything around it – the mission, the practice of teaching and learning, how to operate and manage a school, how to communicate with your school community, scholarships, and so forth. And then comes sales and marketing, a very important part because what good is it if you have all the best teachers with an empty school? In PIA, our marketing is coming along quite well, we’ve enrolled more than 90 new students in the past three months, mainly because we’ve changed our strategies a little bit. My experiences in the past have taught me, a school is like a business, our business is educational services, and everything around it, school edu-
cation, lifeskills education and so forth. And now we have to work with all of our associates and partners on how best to implement all these ideas, which can sometimes be difficult. A school is a little bit like a restaurant in that everyone thinks they can run a restaurant. We’ve all served guests at home, cooked for them, served them wine or beer, and so we think we can run a restaurant because it’s similar, but that’s why many restaurants go broke. Similarly with education, some parents think they understand something about education and teaching because they were in school themselves and they look after kids at home. So some parents think that being a teacher is easy. But it’s not so easy because you have so many kids to care for, and it’s easy for parents to forget how difficult it is to take care of just two or three of their own children. All people are different and have their individual needs and preferences, all 20 children in a classroom too. So it’s a process, like in any other business, of convincing your key customers to be proud of the product you are offering ... Listening to them, but not necessarily giving in to all of their whims, because you can’t please everyone all the time, and you would be foolish, as a school, as a business in trying to. Most businesses concentrate all their efforts and concentration on 10 per cent of the customers, who are unhappy, instead on the 90 per cent who are happy
Can you tell us about your “learning centred” philosophy?
One of the biggest mistakes we are making in education all over the world is for teachers thinking that they can make their students learn, they learn that in university. They don’t understand that the learning process is happening individually by each person. So if I can’t make you learn the question is what can I do to help you to be successful? I need to work like a coach. I need to inspire, empower, motivate, reassure and sometimes praise and correct you. These are all things that I as a teacher can do to motivate and guide you to learn. Teachers usually think they can make you learn, they are the experts in math, science, English or whatever, that they can transfer their knowledge from their brains into the children’s, but then get frustrated if the students don’t do what they want them to do. Often, because the students do not regard the subjects as meaningful. That’s why learning is not very motivating for many students. They sit up to eight times a day for 45 minutes intervals in too small
rooms and have to accept the moods of their teachers who tell them what, how and when to do things. Ask parents, how long they would stay in a job with such conditions? We as humans function through success. We don’t function through failure. Our Maker has installed the drug kind chemical of Dopamine into our brains, which discharges, if we have a positive learning experience – like a happy pill which motivates us to do more because we are addicted to this feeling. All of us know that if we are successful at something, we will like to do it again, but if we are not successful at something, we want to stop and never do it again. So, if I am asked what is the job of a teacher, it is to make children happy and successful.
What’s your view about making mistakes and the learning process?
Everybody who is a good employer knows that employees make mistakes. What you do is find out together with the employee what was wrong, try to get them to analyze what went wrong, and how they would do it better the next time. It’s a learning process. This is the same with children. If children make mistakes, if you only punish them, they won’t learn anything from it. And we know this from abuse – if a boy is misbehaving a lot, no matter how much you beat him, he won’t change, and you won’t intimidate him, with the result that he will do it again until he decides to stop misbehaving himself. If you want him to learn something, you have to find out why this boy is doing what he is doing, and then through a conversation with this child, you explain how to do it better and find out why he doesn’t want to try and do it another way. Then comes the feeling of success, and then the repetition.
What is your greater vision for Yaowawit?
When I started Yaowawit, I would have never dreamed about reaching what we have so far. This is a team here. I am only someone who can provide a vision, sometime give ideas, but the day to day work here is done by the people who work here, my partners and associates. The most important part of my job is not so much thinking about what we are doing day to day, but to think about the future. A school like this, with the children we have here, from tough backgrounds who have all been traumatized, we couldn’t really handle more than 160 children and still do a good job. As an entrepreneur, you always got to be thinking about what comes next. For me next comes two things. First, there are still many small

rural schools here, with 20-30 kids, 1-2 teachers. We think we can help these schools to be stronger. We can help them by finding volunteers. We are now working with about six volunteers at all times and they already teach in the local schools. We can find more. Some of these volunteers have a background in education, so they know how to teach. So we can send them to the schools and help them with new ways of education, as well as with doing more with the left part of the brain – arts and sports, for example – not just cognitive learning. This is part of our success here (at Yaowawit), and we can extend this to other schools. Then, if you really ask me about my dream, that would be to convert Kapong into a model learning destination for rural areas. Especially in this part of the world, a good education is essential for the people to be able to break out of the cycle of poverty. Because once born into a poor family, it’s very difficult to get out of it, and you can only get out of it through education. And if you have learned many positive things you can apply them where you come from or where you go to. We think that if we partner up with local schools, we can help the schools to change their ways ... not to blame the Thai education system, which like the American, German or other Western education systems, has its good and bad points. But like anything, you can fine tune it, and local schools could not do it by themselves. For example, we’ve been doing Life Skills from Day One, for nine years now, meaning our kids go to school and they learn in our own learning centers, in the farm, for hospitality and computers. I spoke to the Director of Education of Phang Nga recently, and he told me that our school (Yaowawit) is a model school for Phang Nga. He said that each school in Phang Nga will have to make some kind of project, produce something or do some kind of service. Basically, they’re going the same way we’ve been doing – lifeskills education, because they too realize that just learning something out of a text book from a teacher is not enough to prepare yourself for life. So my goal would be to convert Kapong to a learning destination where people from all over Thailand and the world can come to see how you can help these people (in poverty) with education. It’s sad if you look at it, that most of these kids would have never made it to university, or even high school. But most of our [graduated] kids are in university or are going to high school. With education, you can change their lives totally, and with that you can change an entire society. Thailand, like any other country, needs more brains, it needs more goodthinking people.

hen innovative tech gadgets are introduced to the public, it’s usually at an exhibition or industry-wide conference – not the US Open tennis competition. The grand slam event will see worldclass stars on the hardcourt, many of whom will wear a new Polo Tech shirt developed by Ralph Lauren, in collaboration with Montreal-based wearable tech company OMsignal. The high-end apparel company is attempting to cash-in on the wearable tech craze, something every tech company under the sun – from Samsung to Apple to Nike – have been attempting to popularise through. But this ain’t no smartwatch. The Polo Tech shirt is basically a compression shirt, that is designed to keep athletes cool during a match. Knitted in the fabric are silver conductive threads that are able to read biological and physical data, everything from heartbeat, stress levels, energy output and respiration. This information is then col-
lected and sent via wireless Bluetooth to an app on a smartphone. “Our vision is that this will transcend sports to help us at every age and in every aspect of life,” David Lauren, Ralph Lauren’s senior vice president of advertising, marketing, and public relations, said in a statement. “Reaching far beyond just the needs of elite athletes, Polo Tech will offer innovative technology for all ages and lifestyles to promote general wellness and quality of life.” The company will also give the machine-washable shirts to ball boys at the US Open, currently taking place in New York City, in order to test the product before eventually finalising the design. With an eye for a March 2015 release, the shirts will be available in several colours and women’s sizes. The company’s ultimate goal is for the shirt to be used for everyday wear as well. “We wanted to design something that fits in with the modern lifestyle and not just a gadget,” a Ralph Lauren representative told reporters last week.
Kickstarter watch: let there be (Ember)light
E
mberlight is a smart light bulb adapter that works with any dimmable bulb (whether it be incandescent, halogen, CFL, and LED). The adapter comes in two options: Edison and Bayonet (for all kinds of light sockets) and is designed to work with all global main voltages (up to 265 volts). The product connects to any iOS or Android through wi-fi and wireless Bluetooth. Users can automate the lighting of any room, with smart scheduling and proximity detection. Users can turn on lights from a distance and the
app will notify users if lights have been left on. With less than a week to go before their Kickstarter has ended, the company has surpassed their US$50,000 (B1.5 million) goal and raised just under US$245,000 (B7.6 million) from about 2,100 backers. The makers of Emberlight plan to ship the first batch of the product to Kickstarter backers in February 15.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warefare, the latest title in the popular shooter series, will not be available for the Wii US, according to COD developer Michael Condrey. Activision, the publishers of the series, did not give a reason for the skipping the Nintendo console. Since the release of the Wii U in 2012, both of the previous games in the series – Black Ops II and Ghosts – were available for the console. The game will be released for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC on November 4.
Hackers ground Sony President
A flight carrying President of Sony Online Entertainment, John Smedley, was grounded last Sunday (August 24) after hackers sent a bomb threat through social media messaging site Twitter. The American Airlines Flight 362, bound for S a n D iego, wa s grounded in Pheonix after the unknown group sent the tweets. The threat was made by the same group of hackers that claimed responsibility for their DDoS attack that shutdown the PlayStation Netowkr and Sony Entertainemnet Network for several hours on Sunday (August 24). “Although this has impacted your ability to access our network and enjoy our services, no personal information has been accessed,” read a statement by Sony.

IN BRIEF Blade Runner sequel in the works?
Cowabunga, they’re back! FILM REVIEW Tim Newton broadcast@classactmedia.co.th
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The same teenage buffoonery keeps us amused, which is just as well because the bits joining the sparse funny lines are mostly forgettable.
N
ever been a big fan of reptiles. They’re sort of slimy and coldblooded, usually with fangs or big teeth. Hollywood has had a love affair with reptiles though with Jurassic Park, Godzilla and scores of nasty, scaly monsters. But it’s hard not to like the four turtles, mutated at birth, trained as ninjas and aged between 13 – 17, making them teenagers. I wish I was sitting in the conference room when they decided to name these four unlikely comic-book characters after renaissance painters – Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo and Donatello. Then, of course, there’s the talking rat. Stay with me … I’ll get to the plot soon. This is the fifth feature-length incarnation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, all spawned from the unlikely, but hugely successful comic book series that kicked off in 1984. Numerous TV cartoon series, action figures and franchise frippery have made the TMNTs one of the greatest comic-bookto-cinema successes of all time. So they drag in Michael Bay as the Producer and Jonathan Liebesman as Director, the latter cutting his teeth on a handful of horror/scifi/fantasy films before taking on the turtles. Michael Bay has any number of visually stunning flicks under his belt – lens flare, slo-motion and explosions being his tools of trade. But maybe not even Michael Bay could turn his Transformer-talents into creating convincing ninja turtles. It all starts in a science lab. Experiment goes wrong, mutated lab animals (four baby turtles and a rat) end up in the sewer, grow

into human-sized, intelligent and very powerful creatures, learn english and the art of the ninja and go about fighting the forces of evil. Luckily for us, there is no shortage of forces of evil that we need heroes – green, in leotards or wearing capes – to fight. The franchise has given our four stars a 2014 make-over with gritty, life-like textures, plenty of shiny weapons and the latest gadgets. The same teenage buffoonery keeps us amused, which is just as well because the bits joining the sparse funny lines are mostly forgettable. Michael Bay dragged along Megan Fox, who draped herself over Autobots in hot pants in the first Transformers reboot. I’m not sure what Fox has been doing since but she’s almost unrecognisable as journalist April O’Neil as she befriends the four crimefighters. Whoopi Goldberg does a cameo, playing a character that acts like Whoopi Goldberg. Otherwise the list of stars fades to C-grade very quickly. Of course if you grew up loving the adventures of the TMNTs, you’ll very likely love this film. I am left with the distinct impression that Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo and Leonardo (Da Vinci) were much better painters than they are CGI turtles.
Director Ridley Scott t old Enter tainm ent Weekly last week that he plans to tackle a sequel to the 1982 film Blade Runner. Katniss could join Hateful Eight
Jennifer Lawrence is currently in talks to join Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight for an undisclosed role, according to Collider. The film already includes the usual Tarantino suspects in Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Madsen, though the official cast list has not yet been confirmed. The film follows a stagecoach with passengers that, when stranded, have grown increasingly tense. The Hateful Eight is slated for a December 2015.
Thai film companies join forces
With the intention of helping expand the Thai film industry worldwide, four Thai film houses – M Pictures, Bangkok Film Studio, Matching Studio, and True I-Content – have joined forces. The new studio, dubbed Transformation Films, has B175 million of capital and plan to export films to the expanding Chinese market. The merger is the first time companies that cover all aspects of the Thai film industry have formed one studio. “We see the Thai movie industry has a bright future, particularly exporting titles to China, where they love Thai stars,” Transformation CEO Sa-Nga Chatchairungruang.

Phuket expat explores points up to Juneau, Alaska: Part Two
T
wo weeks ago, we followed Hansruedi Frutiger, the Swiss GM of Moevenpick Resort & Spa Phuket, on the first part of his recent holiday to North America’s northwestern coast. After a long flight from Phuket via Hong Kong, Hans touched down safely in Vancouver before joining some friends, hopping on and off seaplanes to explore Victoria, Nanaimo, Cowichan Bay and TofinoLong Beach in his first week. Now, we continue with his logs to Whistler Mountain, and on to Alaska via a luxurious cruise liner.
Day 9 I checked in The Aava Whistler Hotel owned by TA Global, the same owner as Moevenpick Resort & Spa Phuket. It is hard to say why exactly Whistler captivates travelers to come back again and again. Perhaps, it’s the superb open country offering great downhill mountain biking, or worldclass skiing in the winter, when tens of thousands of visitors come here. In the summer, the scenery is splendid. There are many outdoor activities, with numerous festivals or concerts, and not to mention, world famous golf courses. But for me, the scenery would have to do. I
The author feels the thrill in the cockpit of an adreniline-pumping sea-plane ride over the vast Canadian wilderness. took a cable car to the top of Whistler mountain for some photos and connected to another cable car, on the “Peak to Peak” transfer system. It is the highest cable car in the world with only four poles hanging more than 400 meters over valleys, offering unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape. The 4.4 km long cable car ride is an 11-minute journey. From pole to pole, there are breathtaking views of Blackcomb Peak and Whistler Mountain, towering over

vast valleys, ancient volcanoes, glaciers and rain forests. Many tourists were hoping to spot the famous black bears, but we didn’t see any. The town itself is small, and has one main street with many shops and restaurants. Day light in the summer is from 5am until 9.30pm.
Day 10 The day was overcast with light rain, and I took an early flight back to Vancouver Harbor. The rain did not stop. The heavy clouds blanketed the summits and green forest below. Welcoming us in Vancouver was rain and a 15 degrees Celsius temperture. I checked in at Listel Hotel on Robson Road in central Vancouver, went for Chinese lunch and walked towards Stanley Park. The black clouds gave way and the rain returned. I went on a Hop-on-hopoff city tour and stopped in Granville, an area with plenty of shops, theatres, galleries and interior design stores, all accessible by foot. Vancouver is a cosmopolitan city with world class shopping, family-friendly attractions and a vibrant arts and music scene, all against the picturesque backdrop of mountains, lush gardens, the vast sea. Day 11 The big day came to board the nearly 300-metre-long, Vista class, Holland American Line, Ms Zuiderdam. There must have been nearly 2,000 passengers checking in the massive vessel. I must say, with so many people and luggage, the check-in was painless, though, thankfully, not all passengers checked in at the same time. The gates to the vessel and US custom clearance were
open by 10am, and I was in my cabin by 11:30am, just in time to get ready for a buffet lunch at noon. ... The scenic cruise started at 5pm. I was looking forward to the week-long itinerary ahead, which would bring us through the Inside passage, and the Tracy Arm fjorde, Juneau, the borough of Skagway, and on to the Glacier- Bay National Park and Ketchikan, before returning to Vancouver. An outdoor State cabin with two chairs on the Balcony cost US$ 2,700 – for a single passenger! Every hour, there is something happening on different decks of Ms Zuiderman.
Day 12 The weather forecast is 12 degrees celsius, cloudy and light wind. Sunrise was at 5:20am and sunset will be 10:20pm. Tonight’s dress code is “Formal”. Let’s see if everyone has come with an appropriate outfit for dinner. The only problem on the cruise is putting on weight. There’s plenty of food everywhere. Internet on board is expensive, starting at $10 per hour, or there’s a 7-day package for $147. One litre of water is $3.25, plus 15 per cent sales tax. I bought three bottles of wine for the price of $84++. Not cheap. I booked in the afternoon a Navigator Wine tasting, to test (refresh) my understanding of the old and new world of wines, and then attended a cooking class. Day 13 We had to change our clocks one hour back, on arrival to a rainy Juneau, the capital city of Alaska, USA... This log, by Hansruedi Frutiger, is to be continued in a fortnight.

Phuket FC hang tough, draw with league leaders FOOTBALL J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
T
here was little that separated Phuket FC and Yamaha League-1 leaders Nakhon Ratchasima FC on Sunday (August 23) as they played to a scoreless draw at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town. In Kendall Jagdeosingh’s first game back, Phuket FC showed signs of life at both ends of the field and held the Swat Cats to just a handful of scoring opportunities while creating some of their own. Jagdeosingh displayed his remarkable speed, drawing defenders to the sidelines to create space for fellow Phuket striker Anusak Laosangthai and deliver some crosses into the box. The tactic almost worked

Thai team arrives in Phuket for training camp, three friendlies FOOTBALL THE THAILAND NATIONAL football team arrived at British International School, Phuket (BISP) last Tuesday (August 26) to begin a two-week training camp at the prestigious international school. The team, made up of U-23 players, will be preparing for the 17th Asian Games in South Korea, taking place September 19 to October 6, with three warm-up matches at Surakul Stadium in Phuket Town. The first match takes place Sunday (August 31) against Myanmar, with a second match on September 3 against Phuket FC. The final friendly will be against Qatar on September 7. All matches kick off at 6:30pm (tickets: B200 general admission, B500 for VIP). The entire time, the Thailand U-23 team will live and @thephuketnews

Head Coach Kiatisuk “Zico” Senamuang, who led the squad to gold in the SEA Games last year, said he likes his team’s chances in this competition. “I have managed several national teams and this is the best. We have a chance of winning the gold medal,” he said last week. The Thai side’s best results were fourth place (in 2002, 1998, and 1990.
drezinho almost put Phuket up with a nice free kick shot from distance, forcing Kamphol to make another save. From there on out it was a see-saw match, with both teams testing each other’s defenses. Still, wide shots and easy punches for both goalkeepers marked the rest of the game.
Ney Fabiano came in with just under 15 minutes left in the match and provided a bit of a spark, finding open space and threatening the Swat Cats towards the end of the game. The draw gives Phuket FC one point and snaps their two game losing-streak. “We improved a lot. The coach came here maximum two weeks. We had a lot. We prepared extemley well fro this game we knew it was going to be a tough game because it is the number 1 team. We came into the game tonight respecting them not fearing them,” Jagdesosingh said after the match. Phu ket FC remain in 13th place (32 points) on the League-1 table with seven matches left on the season. The team’s next match is this Saturday (August 30) at Phitsanulok, Phuket FC coach Reuther Moreira’s former team. Kick-off is set for 5pm.

ICC stun Tri-B’s, Laguna back to winning ways CRICKET
Dave Thomas editor2@classactmedia.co.th
D
efending champions Laguna gained momentum with a win over Thalang in round 8 of the Outrigger T20 League just as ICC ended the winning streak of a surging Bondi Bar Bashers team last Sunday (August 24) at the Alan Cooke Ground in Thalang.
ICC take the win Unlucky in their past few outings, ICC were due a victory and it came against a confident Tri-B team. The tone was set from the first ball which Tri-B batsman Mike khan dispatched for a straight six back over the bowlers head – game on. But Kahn eventually was clean bowled by Shetgaonkey for 27 in the 7th over. ICC tightened up their bowling and boundaries were
hard to come by. Tri-B batsmen tried to up the run rate but Justin Swart was caught behind down the leg side off the bowling of Saleam for 8. Paddy Morton (25) decided enough was enough and advanced down the track to dispatch a great lofted drive straight down the throat of fielder Borkar, who took a great catch. This wicket really swung the momentum ICC’s way
Anthony van Blerk (9) and Neil Quail (15) to take BBB’s to a below par score of 145 Chasing only 146, ICC opening batsman were looking to close the game out early. Richard Desmond was given the ball straight after drinks and trapped Anan Chand LBW with his first delivery. With 2 overs to go ICC needed 12 runs to win, but Naik (30) and Desai (12) absorbed the pressure to secure
victory with 2 balls left.
Laguna gain momentum
Batting first, Thalang sent out Phuket best batesman – Justin Thomatoes – as bowler Iqbal Malik achieved a breakthrough from the first ball of the 2nd over when Thomatoes (4) mistimed a shot and got caught mid-wicket. Iqbal strick again in the same over, removing Gary Carrick (0).
Reeling at 62, Captain Andrew Macmillan entered the arena and moved quickly on to 12 from 10 balls before getting caught in the 5th over by Naeem Youseff. Donovan Cowell then combined with Dupont to steady the ship before the former was caught on the final ball before the break with Thalang 48-4. Thalang’s hopes fell upon big-hitting Simon Wetherell who only managed 11 further
runs. Thalang eventually accumulated 96-9 from their 20 overs. With a run rate required of less than 5 per over, Laguna were looking to get off to a solid start. Iqbal Malik joined opener Manish Sadarangani for a 52 run partnerships, which ended in the 14th over with the score 77-3. Malik later guided Laguna home to victory in 17 overs. The win puts Laguna in 2nd place, behind the previously undefeated Bondi Bar Bashers. Next matches take place Sunday (August 31) at the Alan Cooke Ground with Laguna vs Village at 10am and Thalang vs ICC at 2pm. If anyone is interested in getting involved with cricket in Phuket, please email the Phuket Cricket Group Chairman at chairman@phuketcricketgroup.com, or visit www.phuketcricketgroup.com for more information.
Full Metal Dojo 2 rocks Phuket MMA THE SOUNDS OF PUNISHing strikes and the cheering crowd was at a fever pitch last Saturday (August 23) at the Full Metal Dojo 2 show in Patong. The young promotion, which held their second ever show at Seduction Nightclub on Bangla Road, saw an eightfight main card that featured a historic Thai-against-Thai women’s MMA bout in addition to the litany of international competitors. Afghani fighter Baz Mohammad Mubariz (4-2) walked away with a decision victory over Kristoffer “Creepy” Persson (2-4) in the co-main event
bout. Persson was left bloodied with a bandage over his right eye due to the Mubariz’s relentless attack on the ground. History was made as well,
with the first ever all-Thai professional female bout having taken place for the first time in Thailand. Suwanon “Pocket Rocket” Boonsorn defeated Kaejai Prachumwong in the second round. Despite both fighters’ experience in Muay Thai, Suwanon won the bout via submission (armbar). “That was something that was super unexpected. She pulled it off so cleanly that her opponent’s arm popped and it was let go, proving once again that [Brazilian Jiu Jitsu] is making its way into Thailand MMA,” FMD organiser Jon Nutt said. France’s Jason Ponet (10-8)
took care of Dylan Fussell (2-1) in the first round after a vicious striking barrage that opened up a big gash on the American’s forehead. Still, Fussell took on the fight on just four hours notice after the original competitor – Finnish fighter Glenn Sparv – had to pull out due to an undisclosed illness. Michael Dubois, fighting out of Phuket’s Tiger Muay Thai & MMA Training Camp, defeated Filipino fighter Trestle Tan in under 30 seconds. The win was the first in Dubois’ young career (this was his second ever pro fight), after he lost two months ago in the inaugural FMD show in which he took on the fight last minute.
The island has steadily grown over the years as a haven for combat athletes, specifically mixed martial artists. Full Metal Dojo 2 is the natural extension of that growth and has featured several Phuket-based fighters. The next show, however, will take place in either Bangkok or Pattaya this October as the promotion gathers steam as a touring MMA event. Still, the event brought out several heavy hitters in the Thailand combat scene, including ONE FC fighter Adam Kayoom and Kru Toy Sityodtong – owner of Sityodtong Muay Thai in Pattaya and the most well-known trainer/ gym owner in Thailand. “Not only does [Kru Toy] come from a camp that has more Lumpinee champions, he’s fully on board with MMA. He realises that Muay Thai is
Muay Thai and MMA is MMA, it’s all combat sports. This will all help in educating people in combat sports.

h ile most k id s are toiling away with videogames, 11-year-old Wanchai “Mark” Luangnitikul is at the links trying to perfect his putt. It’s an ordinary Saturday for the junior golfer with his father Pricha at his side at Phunaka Golf Course in Chalong. Just two weeks before, he was celebrating his 4th place finish at the prestigious Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego, California – one of the toughest youth golf competitions on the planet. Though his family is proud of his achievements, Mark just wants to improve. “I think I can do better than this,” he said, “I could not putt on the last day. I putt for birdie in every hole but could not make the last few holes.” The Phuket-native only picked up a golf club after he turned seven. Just fives months later, he was asked to join the Thailand junior golf team. At nine-years-old, he competed in the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships for the first time and finished in 5th place. Today, he is regular competitor at international tournaments in Malaysia, Japan, Australia, and Taiwan in addition to his various sponsorships from companies in Japan and Thailand. But on weekdays, he’s just Mark, a student at Kajonkiet International School with dreams of turning professional. “I just want to play golf.
MEMORIAL WINDS BLOW – The Andrew Simpson Foundation has organized a memorial sail for Andrew “Bart” Simpson who passed away in the Americas Cup Challenge. Over 500 Yacht Clubs have signed up worldwide to race on the September 21 (start time at 10:05am). The ACYC is a registered club for this event and will be organizing two races. The First race will start off Koh Naka Yai and finish in Chalong Bay. The second race will start off Koh Naka Yai and finish at Koh Naka Yai. Both Races will share the same start (10:05 am). Sail and power boats that prefer not to race can join in by sailing to Koh Naka Yai and take part in the dinner at Tenta Nakara Resort. For more info, visit www.acyc.asia @thephuketnews
Wanchai “Mark” Luangnitikul placed fourth in the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in the United States earlier this month. On free time, I just watch video about golf, watch golf channel. Everything is golf, only think about golf. I draw stick man and a golf club and create story about golf,” he told The Phuket News. Mark’s discipline on the golf course (five hours every weekday, over 10 hours on the weekend) clearly come from his father Pricha, a former badminton player for the
Thailand national team. Pricha gleams with pride when he says his son is currently being scouted by professional Golf academies in the US and Australia, including an offer to train with Jason Day, currently one of the ten best golfers in the world. Still, Mark has already moved on from the fact that he just placed 4th out of 145 of the world’s best junior
golfers. His sights are set on competing later this month in Bangkok, this December in Malaysia and again in Hong Kong next March. Ninlana, Mark’s mother, believes he could be worse distractions. “Better to play golf than videogames,” she said, “I think golf helps him have more positive thinking and concentrate in all things.”

Jovetic delivers double as Man City sink Liverpool FOOTBALL
S
tevan Jovetic scored twice as champions Manchester City beat last season’s runners-up Liverpool 3-1 on Monday (August 25) in the first major showdown of the new Premier League campaign. Mario Balotelli was in the stands to watch new employers Liverpool take on former club City after completing his £16 million move to Anfield from AC Milan, but it was another 24-year-old who took centre stage at the Etihad Stadium. Jovetic’s debut campaign at City was spoilt by injury, but the Montenegro striker scored either side of half-time to send Manuel Pellegrini’s side towards victory over the team they pipped to last season’s title. The only point of concern for Pellegrini was an injury to striker Edin Dzeko, who hobbled off mid-way through the second period, but his replacement, Sergio Aguero, needed only 23 seconds to score City’s third. “When you play against a strong team you have to concentrate and our concentration and intensity was good,” said Pellegrini, adding that Dzeko’s injury appeared to be “nothing important”. It was a first away loss
Manchester City’s Montenegrin striker Stevan Jovetic shoots to score the opening goal of the English Premier League football match between Manchester City and Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium. Photo: AFP/Carl Court of 2014 for Brendan Rodgers’s Liverpool, who replied through a Pablo Zabaleta own goal, and left City one of only four teams to have won their first two fixtures, alongside Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Swansea City. “Up until they scored, we were the better side,” said Rodgers. On Sunday (August 24), Nacer Chadli scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur ensured there was no happy return to White Hart Lane for Harry Redknapp as they beat their former manager’s Queens Park Rangers side 4-0.
Chadli put Spurs ahead in the 12th minute when he thrashed home Emmanuel Adebayor’s cross from six yards out. Defender Eric Dier doubled Spurs’ lead with his second goal in as many matches when he headed in Erik Lamela’s corner at the near post on the half hour. Tottenham went 3-0 up in the 37th minute, the match all but over before half time. Argentinian playmaker Lamela was again involved, his precise pass finding the head of Chadli, who nodded in from six yards.
In the 65th minute, Togo striker Adebayor side-footed home from six yards out after a fine run and cross by Danny Rose. Victory meant Spurs went to the top of the table as one of only three sides, with Chelsea and Swansea, to have won both their opening games. Championship play-off winners QPR – who have Tottenham great and former England manager Glenn Hoddle working under Redknapp – have now lost two out of two following their 1-0 loss at home to Hull on the opening weekend. Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho was adamant Fernando Torres had a future at Chelsea despite the Spain striker playing no part in the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League win over Leicester City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (August 23). “I decided to keep the same team (that beat Burnley 3-1 on the opening weekend) and I decided to have a bench with a complete balance,” Mourinho explained. Saturday (August 23) also saw Arsenal’s impressive resilience in coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Everton. Meanwhile Swansea followed up their shock 2-1 win away to Manchester United with a 1-0 victory at home to Burnley. AFP

BISP plans tennis takeover TENNIS J.P. Mestanza editor2@classactmedia.co.th
T
hough months away from the official launch of the High Performance Tennis Academy, the physical education department at British International School Phuket got a close look at the new coaching system that will be implemented. Lee Austrin, an accomplished tennis coach and former player, will head up the HPTA at the school once it revs up in January. The Brit is part of Registro Profesional de Tenis (RPT), a coaching organisation that champions the Spanish style of play, which has produced four no. 1-ranked players – amongst a litany of other top 20 athletes – in the last 20 years. Last Thursday (August 21),

world-class program. “This is massive for us because we have a vision of the school to be world class. We have world class swimmers, world class football academy,
and the aim now is to get a world class tennis program,” said Richard Stockings, head of the Physical Education Department. “Having RPT here means
we can attract young people to come here and could put Phuket on the map as a tennis center of excellence, which is what we want,” he said. Stocking added that the
school will work with the existing social tennis club to internally scout potential players for the HPTA with an eye on a full launch in January. Meanwhile, Austrin will impart his wisdom to students and take charge of the HPTA. “Basically, by the end of every year we are looking for improvement on the four pillars of the RPT system: technical, tactical, physical and mental. We want to see improvement in these kids’ lives and to have more kids involved in tennis.” Austrin has worked with top ten-ranked players from Sri Lanka, Thailand, the UK. He believes it won’t take long for BISP to hit the elite level. “We will gradually attract some of the top players to the school. But it’s not all about results, it’s about teaching children how to play correctly and be great adults,” he said.

has been training with the top squad for several months and was finally given an official spot on the team last week ahead of an international tournament later this year. “Jassada has done amazing. I never belive... we never ever get this kind of level so early,” said Hannu Tuukanen, Football Director at YFH. In addition, Arm and another YFH player will head
off to Germany to train with Bundesliga club Schalke 04’s youth squad for several weeks to get experience and hone their football skills. “I think this means that, of course, working hard can bring something special,” said Tuukanen. “He can play any defensive position. So in October he will be able to learn more with top Euro youth players.”

Wounded Wallabies look to rebound against Springboks RUGBY UNION
W
allaby coach Ewen McKenzie last Wednesday (August 27) demanded far more from his team against South Africa as they look to recover from their mauling at the hands of the All Blacks last weekend. The Australians have been licking their wounds this week after crashing to a record 51-20 defeat to their Tasman neighbours in Auckland on Saturday (August 23) in the Rugby Championship. McKenzie admitted it was not good enough. “We don’t hide from the fact that our performance against New Zealand was well below our own expecta-

momentum we had created since last year’s (southern
hemisphere) spring tour,” he said.
“We’ll address that and then get on with preparing for what will be a very tough battle against South Africa.” They will go into the clash against the Springboks in Perth on September 6 without at least two of the players who started in Auckland – Pat McCabe and Nathan Charles. Outside back McCabe fractured his neck during the Eden Park clash – for the third time since 2012 – which his ACT Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham on Wednesday (August 27) said had ended his rugby career. Charles will also be missing with a pectoral tear that has ruled him out for the rest of the season, as he joined fellow hookers Stephen Moore and Tolu Latu on the injured list. In announcing a 30-man
squad, McKenzie called up young Western Force centre Kyle Godwin for his first taste of Wallaby action while powerful hooker Tatafu Polota-Nau is recalled. Although Polota-Nau is back in the mix, McKenzie said he would not be considered for the match as he continues to recover from an injured knee. Instead, he will be aimed at a return against Argentina on September 13. “Kyle is someone who has been on the national radar for some time, but unfortunately hasn’t had much of an opportunity to join the Wallabies environment due to injury,” McKenzie said. “He now gets his chance to join the squad, and we’ll look forward to learning more about him.” AFP
