each umbrellas remain banned outside the “10 per cent” designated areas at Phuket’s 18 main tourist beaches this high season, while sun loungers remain banned anywhere on Phuket beaches. Vice Governor Chokdee Amornwat confirmed on ednesday ct that the 10% beach rule is to stay after he

concluded his third and final meeting with local police district officials community leaders and beach operators, this time in Thalang. The 10% rule allows vendors renting our umbrellas and sun loungers to tourists to occupy not more than 10% of the beach area. Immigration calls for Article 44 to ban re entry for o erstayers

THE IMMIGRATIO N BUreau has asked Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha to exercise his special powers under Article 4 4 of the interim constitution, giving PM Prayut unlimited discretion in arbitrarily issuing orders, to issue a ban on foreigners found guilty of overstaying in Thailand from re-entering the country for one to 10 years. The move is aimed at cutting the number of illegal migrants by 8 0 per cent, down from the current crop of overstayers estimated at 8 00,000. Immigration Chief Pol Lt Gen Nathathorn Prousoontorn this week reiterated the new bans that were announced in J uly last year, but have yet to be introduced: O ne-year re-entry ban for overstays of 9 0 days to one year; Three-year re-entry ban for overstays of one to three years; Five-year re-entry ban for overstays of three to five years 10-year re-entry ban for overstays of than five years. “The re-entry bans have been approved by the Interior Minister already, but right now they are still waiting @thephuketnews

Rethink ‘War on Drugs’ vote residents in poll The Phuket News ed itor@classactmed ia.co.th

N

early half the respondents to an online poll by T he P huket New s have called for the government to rethink its “W ar on Drugs”, while more than 4 0 per cent called for police to target only big fish dealers. Nary a week goes by without T he P huket New s reporting drugs busts; some large, others small. But it is the personal possession arrests that elicit the most vociferous comments from readers, often questioning why police chose to grandstand taking less than a gramme of any illegal substance off the streets. Arrests targeting token amounts of kratom, a locally indigenous plant that acts as a mild stimulant when ingested, often provoke the most enquiring comments. To this, T he P huket New s launched its poll, asking readers: “W hich of the following views on the current drug-enforcement policy on kratom best describes you? ” A tell-tale 4 8 % of respon-

Police should focus on busting major dealers instead of

mules and small-time users.” In support of the police’s efforts to eradicate drugs, only 8 % of respondents voted: “All drugs are bad, and kratom is no exception. Police should continue to crack down on users, mules and dealers.” Clearly indicating that the current “W ar on Drugs” policy is an issue that all members

of the public have an opinion on, not a single vote was cast saying: “I have no opinion on this and/ or don’t know enough about illegal drugs in Thailand.” O f note, the poll was launched before the lethal arrest attempt that killed two young men in Thalang earlier this month. The botched arrest, which police say netted 5 0 ya b ah ( methamphetamine) pills and one kilogramme of krathom, sparked the Thalang Police Station riot, Phuket’s worst street violence in decades, with scores of residents laying siege to Thalang Police Station. Police later admitted that posthumous blood tests on the two victims revealed that neither suspect could be physically proven to have taken drugs, but maintained that the drugs ‘ seized” were not “planted” on the suspects at the scene of the attempted arrest. over future of whale sharks

M A R I N E TOU R COMpanies and conservationists have expressed concern about destructive local fishing practices after a school of whale sharks was spotted off Phuket’s east coast last week, and subsequent photos and videos of the sighting went viral on social media sites. The whale sharks have returned regularly for the past three years, bringing with them an abundance of sea life, which also come to hang ga ay to feed. However, the increased sea life has also attracted local fisherman, who have no concern for the well being of the whale sharks,” said Tour guide aradon utla orn. e are hoping authorities will help to conserve the sea life by better regulating the fisherman and their destructive practices,” he said. Tourists replacing rebels Sri Lanka’s national park sees visitors return in droves SRI LANKA

okaiya Peremadasa shudders as he recalls the havoc Tamil rebels used to wreak on his beloved wildlife park during Sri Lanka’s brutal 3 7 -year-long civil war. “They would come down and shoot the animals,” he said, as his jeep bounced around on a bumpy dirt track of Y ala National Park in the island’s south. The 4 8 -year-old guide tells how he even came under fire himself, while wildlife spotting in Sri Lanka’s second largest park, famed for its leopards, after rebels attacked a bungalow. “They spotted us and started shooting at my vehicle. They followed the jeep and I drove at high speed until we made it to the main gate where the army and police were waiting,” he said. “They didn’t catch us but it was terrifying.” For most of Mr Peremadasa’s 3 1 years at the park, it

Photo: Lakruwan Wanniarachchi was a no-go zone for tourists, except for the most hardened of adventurers who hoped to catch a glimpse of the leopards but also bears and elephants. But in the six years since the Sri Lankan army crushed the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil E elam ( LTTE ) , ending their decades-long insurgency, visitors have returned in droves. “Safaris were cancelled regularly and the only tourists that came during the war had experienced hostile situations,” explained Mr Peremadasa.

“W e had very few visitors. There wasn’t any work for us and we had no livelihoods. “I even heard that they kidnapped a guide once, although I never found out what happened to him in the end,” he added. Close to 1,000 square kilometres in size, Y ala proudly boasts of being home to the highest concentration of leopards anywhere in the world. Approximately 100 of the big cats are believed to roam its dusty terrain, the outer edges of which rest against a stretch

Killer road creating a village of widows INDIA FO R DE VE LO PING INDIA, dangerous and potholed roads have long been a way of life. But one highway running through a village in the southern state of Telangana has gained a dire reputation, blamed for the deaths of scores trying to cross it. A bypass road of National Highway 4 4 snakes through Peddakunta village, cutting off the community from its headquarters on the other side. Since the road was built in 2006, Peddakunta has been dubbed the “village of highway widows” with only one male adult left among the huts of 3 5 families. The rest of the village comprises women, children and the elderly. Some 3 5 male residents have been killed in Peddakunta trying to reach the other side, locals say. “My husband died in a bypass road accident and so did my brother and my father. There are no men to look after us in the family,” @thephuketnews

Another widow held up a black-and-white printout of her dead husband, his body laying on the bypass, his left foot crushed. Locals have demanded a foot bridge or tunnel so they can safely cross the four-lane stretch to reach the headquarters to collect monthly pensions or find employment in other villages. But widows say their demands have been ignored. “No one will help us. E veryone will come, take photos and videos and go off,” said

K. Maani, 3 8 , as she cooked over a stove made of mud. “I do not have a gas stove or even a bathroom, no one is there to help us,” said the mother of three. India has some of the world’s deadliest roads with more than 23 0,000 fatalities annually, according to the W orld Health O rganization. Transport analysts attribute the huge number of accidents to poor roads, ill-trained drivers and reckless driving. The national government has put forward proposals for new legislation to make roads safer by stiffening lax traffic regulations. A FP

of golden sands leading to the Indian O cean. Mr Peremadasa said the park is now welcoming about 1,9 00 paying customers a day, depending on the season, occupying around 25 0 jeep journeys. “There are many tourists visiting these days, lots of British people, but we’re seeing more Chinese coming,” said the veteran guide. “The tourist numbers are good for our livelihoods,” beamed Mr Peremadasa, who charges 6,000 Sri Lankan

rupees ( B1,5 9 8 ) for a safari lasting around four hours, depending on how many animals have been spotted. Anushka Kahandagama, an assistant director at the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, reported that more than 17 0,000 foreign tourists visited the park last year and another 24 0,000 Sri Lankans. The inf lux is a muchneeded boon for the local area which suffered tragedy when 25 0 people were killed in the Indian O cean tsunami on Boxing Day in 2004 . No animals died but a memorial near the beach stands as a solemn reminder of those who perished. he par first established as a wildlife sanctuary in 19 00, is divided into five bloc s with tourists kept mainly to block one, where there’s thought to be between 4 0 and 5 0 leopards. The protected eco-system is home to 4 4 varieties of mammal and 215 species of bird, with crocodiles, deer and peacocks also found roaming the wildlife oasis.

The end of the war has also boosted conservation efforts and officials expect that the number of leopards roaming the park has been on the increase since the war. “W e think there are nearly 100 leopards in the park, but the last survey was conducted years ago said an official at Sri Lanka’s Department of W ildlife Conservation. “No new sur veys are scheduled but we believe that when the next is done we will find more,” he added over the phone, without giving his name. W hile Y ala’s guides are obviously delighted with the upturn in their fortunes, there has been one major drawback however. “The many more jeeps that are out and about has actually made it a lot harder to spot the leopards,” lamented Mr Peremadasa. “Y ou used to be guaranteed of seeing some after just one or two hours of looking but now it can take much longer and sometimes you don’t see any at all.” A FP

Battling urban renewal ereal cafe protest p ts on on gentrification in foc s

The ‘Cereal Killer Cafe’ on Brick Lane in Shoreditch, east London. Photo: Niklas Halle’n/AFP another rapidly changing part of London. “It is a bit like being in a flood that we are caught up in... the global financial system pouring money into London property and pushing prices up everywhere, irrespective of local needs.” Ms Conn, a retired civil servant, campaigns tirelessly

pushed aside for big faceless corporations,” she said. In April hundreds of antigentrification protesters in Brixton, south London, took to the streets, angry that local residents and businesses were being driven out of the area by rising rents. Rioters smashed the window of an upmarket estate agents. W hile the owners of the Cereal Killer Cafe can hardly be seen as representing big corporates, the area in which they operate is experiencing the same tensions. Kristian Niemietz, head of health and welfare for the Institute of E conomic Affairs, believes anti gentrification protesters are as irked by the erosion of “coolness” as they are by rocketing house prices. “The reason why people get attracted to these areas is they acquired a reputation as being trendy or cool... it becomes a status symbol to live there,” he said. “The thing with status symbols is that they lose their value when more people acquire them.” A FP

O ne man who feels unjustly affected by the changes is Peckham market trader Y assine Melki who has sold home textiles there for almost 25 years. It is these big companies - we are too small for them, they do not care how we are going to look after our families,” said the Algerian-born father-of-three. Southwark Council, which ordered Mr Melki to move his stall, argues that it is part of a bigger plan to redevelop the area that will ultimately attract more business. hen two bearded brothers f rom Belfast opened a retro cafe devoted to cereal in the trendy London suburb of Shoreditch, they had little idea of the ire it would ignite. “O ur communities are being ripped apart,” the “Class W ar” group said on its website ahead of violent protests which saw the “Cereal Killer Cafe” daubed in graffiti and bottles hurled in the street. The activists blamed “oligarchs”, “sheikhs” and “scumbag property developers” for the proliferation of luxury flats unaffordable to most people. Northern Irish entrepreneurs Gary and Alan Keery are of course none of the above. But their cafe, bedecked in 19 8 0s and 19 9 0s memorabilia and selling over 120 brands of cereal at upwards of £ 3 ( B163 ) a bowl, found itself at the sharp end of a growing anti gentrification movement in a city where the cost of

living continues to soar. Brick Lane, for decades the heart of London’s Bangladeshi community, is increasingly populated by the trendy hipsters now seen as synonymous with the once deprived local area, Shoreditch. Paul W att, reader in urban studies at Birkbeck University, London, believes last month’s protest was a reaction to a process of change whereby social housing has been replaced with luxury new developments, and small retailers supplanted by big business. t s gentrification on steroids,” he said, describing the “growing corporatisation of retail space and housing”. “Much of it is simply unaffordable for ordinary people. People are being pushed out of the city,” he said. The average house price in the British capital stands at £ 4 3 0,000 ( B23 ,4 9 0,025 ) and could rise to £ 1 million ( B5 4 ,627 ,9 66) by 2020 if the rise continues at the current rate, according to property website Rightmove.

At the event, held at the The Village Coconut Island resort, Mr Intrator delivered a presentation on Hospitality Investment in Asia”, a central theme for his presentation at the Asia acific igar his y & Lifestyle E xpo ( APCW L) held at Royal Phuket Marina last weekend. The first of its kind in Asia-Pacific, the APCW L comprised three days of showcasing products from around the world to aficionados of luxury and lifestyle at Royal Phuket Marina’s waterside RPM International E xhibition & Conference Centre. Phuket Governor Chamroen ipayapongtada officially opened the expo, together with Hillman ent and President of expo organisers Hathor nvestment roup and

The BCCT event proved valuable for the many entrepreneurs in the room. Photo: BCCT Gulu Lalvani, Chairman of Royal Phuket Marina. Highlighting what it ta es to succeed in lifestyle ventures, Mr Intrator explained at the BCCT event, “First and foremost, successful ventures are both specific and encompassing in defining their products and markets. “Do you understand your customers? W ho they are and what they are looking for? Do they know they need or want your product? And do your staff know this? ” Central to a formula for success was the role of quantifiably describing the product offered, the market, staff straining and a host of other

factors, including customer satisfaction, as defined by how many minutes a typical customer spends in one visit to one of Hathor s hisgars or Craft beer outlets, or at the private equity firm s hind Asia Club or -13 º ice bars. Among the factors to be “measured” were quality of workmanship, longevity of product and product value, and even exact quantifiable measurements of staff training. In essence, Mr Intrator highlighted that measuring makes for consistency, and that consistency is the very definition of quality. “And quality is reputation,” he revealed. O ther factors explained in

light of the Hathor roup s current lifestyle product and service expansion included site location and distribution that complements the productmar et relationship. pecifically, Mr Intrator pointed out the cross-selling of products between the Craft and W hisgars outlets. And that expansion is going very well with Hathor looking to expand from its 12 luxury venues outlets to 24 -plus within two to three years. Chris Gordon, however, explained through his personal experiences how far up and down the roller-coaster ride of passionate entrepreneurship can go, from his building of the international yacht-charter

franchise Sunsail, the first in the world of its kind, to the creation of The Village Coconut Island resort off the east coast of Phuket, where the BCCT event was held. “E ntrepreneurs chase their dreams, and they never let them go. They identify opportunities that others do not see and they go for it,” he said. “It doesn’t always work out, but despite the fail rate, true entrepreneurs feel compelled to pursue their ventures and they will do whatever is in their power to make it work, regardless if others can see it or not. For entrepreneurs, it’s not over until it’s over,” he said. “The challenge is to keep going,” he added. “But it is a lonely way to work. Y ou have all the input of the board, the investors and management when making a key decision, but the decision is yours alone. Y ou don’t get to share the decision. It’s your’s whether you get it right or wrong. W hat you do about it, is up to you,” he said. C lass A c t M edia is a p roud sp onsor of the BC C T b usiness dinner series. Living legends of fact PHUKET EXPAT FINANCE

W

e all love a good stor y. We also know that some stories, even ones rooted in historical fact, have a tendency to be embellished so much over time that they become unrecognisable to anyone who remembers what really happened. As the old saying goes: “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” For the last 35 years, a financial legend has been created, and although the veracity of supply side economics has been repeatedly debunked by facts, the mainstream media have continued to print, and defend, the legacy of Reaganomics. When Paul Volcker became Chairman of the Federal Reserve in October 1979, the US had gone through 10 years of gradually increasing inflation, and for 10 years the approach taken by the Fed was a gradual tightening of interest rates – easing them again as inflation seemed to improve. nflation hit 12.2 per cent

the month Volcker was appointed, which was a stunning 3% higher than interest rates. Volcker immediately instituted a tight money policy, aimed at reducing the amount of money in circulation, which he correctly predicted would cause interest rates to fluctuate over a wider range” than in the past. Indeed, the Fed Funds rate ultimately topped 20 because with the supply of money sharply constricted, businesses and individuals who needed to borrow money were forced to pay a hefty premium for the privilege… a classic application of supply and demand. And only five months after Volcker took charge at the ed, inflation pea ed at 14.7% . Nine months later it fell below where it had been when he was hired, and less than two years after the peak, inflation had fallen by more than half. In two years, Volcker’s policies had reversed a decade-long trend of high inflation and anaemic growth. The era people refer to as tagflation was over. This brings us to the legend. According to adherents

olicies intro

of trickle-down economics, it was Ronald Reagan’s tax cuts that saved the day because all that extra money received by the top 10% of wage-earners filtered through the economy, creating the economic miracle of low inflation and job creation. What the proponents of Reaganomics ignore is that by 1 2, a necessary and according to economists at the time – inevitable recession had effectively “rebooted” the economy, and a 16-year bear market in stocks was about to end thanks to Paul

Volcker bringing inf lation under control. Y ou may be asking yourself: “What has this got do with me in 2015 ell, financial uncertainty of any description is bad for stock markets, which was the case in 1979 and is the case again today. n 1 2, with inflation under control, a bull market in Bonds began, which is now coming to an end, if it hasn’t ended already. Since 1987, we have seen the policies of activist Central an s in every major econo-

my in the world inflating one sector of the economy after another – such as through bonds, stocks, property – and we have seen those asset bubbles pop, only to be re inflated. It then transpires, if you believe what you read, that the answer to every financial problem is more tax cuts for the highest wage-earners. Everyone would like to pay lower taxes, but trickle-down economics is a discredited legend which simply refuses to go out of print.

The best way to safeguard yourself is to construct a diversified portfolio of non correlated assets, with a focus on assets classes which can profit from whatever turmoil – or growth – the markets throw at you. An interesting side note: n uly 21, 2015, another idea of Paul Volcker’s became law. The “Volcker Rule” prevents banks from using their own funds for short-term proprietary trading of securities, derivatives, commodity futures and options… that is, the very activities that helped to inflate monetary assets, and which precipitated the 200 Financial Crisis. It’s too soon to say if there is a correlation, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) – which has hovered around 18,000 for much of 2015 began falling on uly 21, and got as low as 1 ,000 in September. At the time of writing the Dow stands at 17,646. W ant to know more about investing and you’ re not sure how to go about it? C ontact us by email at chatwithus@ phuketexpatfinace.com

Weekend wellness JW Marriott hosts rejuvenating yoga programme Dalia Hilmi editor1@classactmedia.co.th

J

W Marriott recently held a rejuvenating wellness workshop taking one on a journey to a complete understanding of the relationship between the mind and the body and allowing an improvement of individual happiness and wellbeing. My colleague and I took it upon ourselves to take part in this workshop to find out more about what the package had to offer. The three day programme consisted of a variety of sessions including yoga by popular practitioner, Kim White, seminars in traditional Chinese medicine by Ken Rosen, as well as meditation with Nikorn Banjerdlert. Set at the beautiful JW Marriott Resort & Spa, I could not think of a more idyllic and peaceful location to carry out the programme. It was the perfect place to allow one to fully reset, unwind and be at peace.

Nikorn Banjerdlert. Upon arrival, we were fed a delicious, healthy lunch, getting us ready for the post-lunch Asana Yoga session with Kim. At first thought, I was anxious at the idea of being full-bellied for a work out, but funnily enough we were reassured that the yoga session was not strenuous and was in fact more of a meditation hour. Many of you will already be aware of Kim’s effective yoga methods, simply because she is a regular columnist for

The Phuket News. However, for those that don’t know, her experiences which shaped her career and who she is today are quite inspirational. Having suffered health problems from the age of three, she was instructed by doctors to wear supportive shoes and told that she would “probably be in a wheelchair by the age of 25”. So, she began practicing yoga to train her body and mind “to hold itself”, which at the time, there was no real certification or existence. After a few years, she became quite a yoga master, and while she was in college she would even help and teach some of her classmates. Her journey with yoga has been so integral to her character that she claims she simply could not imagine life without it. It’s a part of her, and it is not just a form of exercise or meditation that keeps her together, but rather a lifestyle. “In terms of this weekend programme, I’m just trying to open the doors of yoga for people to see which one they like the most. There’s the meditative way or the physical way, so I would like to give people a better understanding of what yoga means for each person. I use a little bit of creativity, movement,

and education,” Kim explains. We walked into the large room where individual mats were laid out for each person. We all set up home and lay down on the mats and covered ourselves with a blanket. The idea of this class was to relax and focus, but not fall asleep; a concept which I found hard to comprehend! Throughout the hour, Kim walked around the room while we lay there, telling us in a quiet, peaceful voice to imagine being in the desert, or perhaps reflect back to a relaxing time in our lives, all the while reminding us that we were not allowed to fall asleep. My colleague unfortunately suffers from insomnia, so as you can imagine, did not struggle with this concept. Admittedly, it wasn’t long before I dozed off. I tried quite hard not to, but alas, it was beyond my control. It was only for fifteen minutes or so, as I woke up to the sound of Kim ringing a drum-like bell. After the hour past, Kim explained to us that the purpose of this Asana Yoga session was to help us use our mind to take control. If we ever felt like we needed to relax, or if we struggled to fall asleep at night, this was a type of yoga which would be effective in using our mind to help us focus. Following the session, we were treated with a 60 minute aroma massage treatment where we had the generous options of choosing which kind of oil we wanted them to use for example, as well as other detailed questions. After the most relaxing and refreshing massage we gathered for the most delicious dinner at one of the hotel’s restaurants. Overall, the attention to detail was admirable. Indeed, from the staff, to the food, to the methods, to the service, it was all a reflection on how professional and organised the weekend was; a positive for anyone else that would have taken part. Each of the practitioners were inspirational and all had something strong to contribute. It was a well-worthy weekend and a great way to learn and get involved in some of the most challenging, motivational and unusual yoga classes.

f you haven’t heard of Guy Fawkes Night, it’s an annual commemoration observed on November 5, primarily in Great Britain, otherwise known as Bonfire Night and Firework Night. Let’s start at the beginning. In 1605, thirteen young men planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London, England. Among them was Guy Fawkes, Britain’s most notorious traitor. Guy Fawkes was arrested while guarding explosives plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. On the very night that the Gunpowder Plot was foiled, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on

his life, this day helped introduce the Observance of 5th November Act which later enforced an annual public day of thanksgiving for the plot’s failure. The event is commemorated every year with fireworks and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire. Although, some have been known to wonder whether they are celebrating Fawkes’ execution or honouring his attempt to do away with the government... There are a few celebrations occuring in Bangkok, but if you fail to find an event to join in Phuket, then we recommend kicking back with popular movie, V for Vendetta, a movie set in a future British tyranny, where a shadowy freedom fighter, known only by the alias of “V”, plots to overthrow it with the help of a young woman.

Black cats to test their luck

I

n Thailand, there is a ghost called Jakla, which is a black kitty with red evil eyes that can kill people simply by staring. Bound by myths and fairy tales that they are an omen of evil, the life of a black cat is more difficult than any other feline. Imagine that you’re the last one who gets fed by strangers on the street or that no one really appreciates your presence at a funeral. Time for black cat owners to change these misconceptions! The Cat Fanciers’ Club of Thailand has put together an admirable initiative to change that stereotype and is calling for all the coal-coloured kitties of Thailand to compete in a pageant for the sleekest and blackest fur. The rules call for all-black felines

only. No white spots or socks. All breeds are welcome as long as they’re black. Those with twisted tails from birth and disabilities are welcome too. Much kudos to those veterans who have fought in many alley cat wars! They just have to be healthy and have a great personality. (Catching the infrared red dot will earn them extra points.) The contest is divided into four categories: short-hair kittens, long-hair kittens, shorthair adults, and long-hair adults. Got a black feline? Entry is free and you could go home with B3,000 if your cat wins the first prize. Coconuts Bangkok To apply visit this url: bit.do/ thaiblackcat

A taste of all things Spanish

Wine, tapas and museums galore Hansruedi Frutiger editor@classactmedia.co.th

We later adjourned to Bodega 1900 for some mouthwatering, savouring, innovative tapas.

The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, also known as Barcelona Cathedral.

I

recently went on a wonderful trip to Spain which was organised by Bart Duijkers from the Andaman Wine Club in Phuket. The trip was designed for wine lovers and was designed around staying in small boutique and historical vineyard hotels. We enjoyed many wine-based lunch and dinners in a variety of restaurants and tapas bars, including some stunning one- and two- Michelin Star restaurants. On this trip we travelled 2,000km – from Barcelona to Pirorat to Rioja to Ribera del Duero to Madrid. I arrived in Barcelona on September 18, a day earlier than the rest of the members the club, and checked into Hotel Claris, located close to the main thoroughfare La Rambla. The hotel features 124 rooms and suites, all individually designed and modern with a fresh look. In the afternoon I took the hop-on, hop-off bus, which is easy to use and stops at various places of interest, such as Sagrada Familia, an unfinished church for the past 100 years, as well as the Paul Guell park and of course the famous museum of Picasso and Miro. The eponymous Museum of Gaudi is an exhibition that tells us all about the artist’s private life and religious beliefs. Antonio Gaudi lived from 1852 to 1926 and was great at creating sculptures and monuments, some of which are illustrated in various places around Barcelona. His devotion to the church has been displayed in his house, as well as a portrayal of some recreational and private rooms. On the evening of September 19, I met my new wine friends from Phuket and enjoyed some local bubbly on the rooftop of the hotel. We later adjourned to Bodega 1900 for some mouthwatering, savouring, innovative tapas, accompanied with some, of course, excellent white and red wine from the region. Any major food and wine consumption needed proper digestion so the following morning I decided to walk down Les Ramblas to the waterfront and took a cable car to the highest hill in the area to capture the overall view of this fascinating and clean city. The weather was a pleasant 25º Celsius with a light wind, so it was fairly comfortable. On Sunday evening, we met on the roof terrace of the hotel where we enjoyed some more bubbly at sunset before heading to the very popular Catalana Tapas bar nearby. One cannot reserve a table here, so we simply had to cue for 45 minutes to get a table. But, it was worth the wait and some fantastic wine and food was served. On the Monday, our wake up call was at 7am, ready for our trip aboard a chartered luxury bus which drove us to Pirorat, one of Spain’s oldest wine growing areas. We visited El Llorar vineyard for wine tasting and had lunch in the fabulous El Celler de

Later in the afternoon, we arrived at Hotel del Compte, a small country boutique style hotel in a small village with 300 inhabitants, located on a steep slope next to the church in Torroja. It was a mesmerising setting, with the nearby hills covered in vineyards and olive trees. In the afternoon, besides chilling out and enjoying an array of beverages from the region,

we had the opportunity to try out and learn some Spanish cooking or taste the various olive oils and its production; another great day had by all. The following morning at 9:30am we drove through a beautiful landscaped hillside onto the motorway to Zaragoza, where we enjoyed ourselves at the Birolla 4 tapas bar. We started off with some delciois Gazpacho, followed by some Foie Gras and then a rice dish and mushrooms. We had lamb for mains and for dessert, we indulged in some caramel custard with a fig sauce; a happy afternoon in all and we celebrated with a much needed snooze on the bus. Stay tuned for the conclusion to be published in next week’s issue.

An off-island dining experience

Exploring one of Naka Island’s culinary delights Tim Newton broad cast@classactmed ia.co.th

I

’m leaving Phuket for an “offisland” dining experience. But it’s only a five-minute boat ride and I’m already there. Surely I could just swim here – it’s that close. The Naka Island resort is part of The Luxury Collection and it’s one of those “WOW!” experiences you must enjoy sometime during your stay in Phuket. We headed to Naka Island to enjoy their signature restaurant My Grill. The fare is built around local seafood and quality imported meat, a particular passion for Culinary Director, Ian Thomason. He’s been preparing delicious cuisine for the international highend clientele at Naka Island for three years. One of the unique things about My Grill is that many of the guests DO get to enjoy this special experience, unless they take a boat back to Phuket! It’s a captive audience. Today Ian prepared My Grill’s two signature dishes… Crab Mouse Ravioli as a starter and Ian’s local variation of

Ian Thomason’s Iron Chef winning dishes at The Naka Island provide the best reason to go ‘off-island’. the “Surf and Turf”. The crab mousse in the ravioli was prepared from fresh Phuket crab, which is sourced fresh every day from Rawai. The pasta is prepared fresh daily in the My Grill kitchen and then fuses his secret spice combo to provide an explosion of really local flavours. It’s such an uncomplicated dish, presented simply but with an exotic brink that reminds you that you’re in five-star restaurant. Ian’s Surf and Turf is again served beautifully but basically. Local lobster and a fillet of fine Australian beef resting on an olive oil mash. Again, exquisite light flavours that don’t burden the high quality meats. Cooked to perfection even though my serving was getting a bit

cold as we fluffed around with the photos. Eat this one when it lands on your table to enjoy the full effect. Ian deserves his position as the head of My Grill. He’s not only done his time at top restaurants around the world, he’s competed in, and won a round of IronChef Thailand, the deadly serious Asian TV cooking programme. It’s so serious I think they chop the head off the losers… maybe I made that up. But it is a major coup and only the best get to compete, let alone win. You certainly wouldn’t describe Ian as a media chef – quietly spoken, worldly in his opinions and down to earth. It’s reflected in his My Grill menu; short of fuss and deliver-

K

ang Som, or sour curry, is one of the most famous dishes in a Thai household’s menu in all parts of the country. Most versions of Kang Som comprise a variety of local vegetables and fish, shrimp or even crab. In different areas, locals use a variety of ingredients to whip up the Kang Som. But one thing that must be the same in Kang Som no matter where you go is the lack of coconut milk – the taste is instead a little sour. Most Thai curries, such as red, green, penang or massaman, all have coconut milk as a main ingredient and taste mostly spicy and

salty. However, the sour taste featured in Kang Som is rarely found in a Thai curry. The Northern style Kang Som has a very light taste, not so spicy. Herbal ingredients are used less in the curry paste and tomato is used for the sour taste. The Central style is more sweet and sour with and freshwater fish and local vegetables, such as morning glory, papaya and long beans. In the Southern region, where it is believed that the most spicy and creative curries can be found, Kang Som is served with fish or shrimp, which are obviously quite easy to find in the South. In the North or Central regions of Thailand, people mostly use freshwater fish Pla Chon (snakehead fish) as the main ingredient because its taste is not too fishy. But in the South, people mostly

ing authentic flavours where the fresh ingredients do the talking. My Grill is one of two main eateries at The Naka Island. As a Phuket local, you can buy a “day pass” and make a whole day at the island (the boat leaves from Ao Po Grand Marina) where some of your meals and drinks are included in the package. Or you could simply pop over for some fine dining at My Grill after sipping a quiet sundowner overlooking Phang Nga Bay’s astonishing landscape. Ian recommends you phone ahead so they can ensure there’s a table available and organise the very swish, and quick, boat ride to Naka Island. The location is exquisite – the restaurant nestled along the foreshore of the resort over looking THAT other island – and the food is well worth the short speedboat transfer. It’s all a bit “Monte Carlo Riviera”. Highly recommended and a great excuse to get off the island to enjoy a special dining experience. Tim Newton was a guest of The Naka Island and My Grill. You can see more of Tim’s review of his visit to My Grill at thephuketnews.com/tv Kang Som in Phuket has its own unique style, as locals use fresh chilli instead of dried chilli for the curry paste. For the sour taste, they use lemon instead of tamarind juice which produces a very sharp taste. Finally, salt is used instead of fish sauce.

Kang Som Southern style offers a great variety of the ubiquitous curry. use local fish and seafood mixed with local vegetables. The main ingredients of Kang Som curry paste Southern style is as follows: Fresh or dried chilli 100g Fresh cumin 50g Fresh garlic or red onion 50g Lemongrass 25g • Salt or fish sauce • Lemon or tamarind juice • Your favourite vegetable • Your favourite seafood, or fish

How to cook this delicious dish: Blend the first four ingredients together by pounding them finely Bring to boil about 2 litres of water and add above ingredients Add salt and lemon to taste Add vegetables Add seafood (in case of fish do not stir when cooking) Be sure to check out this glorious dish, I believe you will be very impressed with the style you can enjoy right here in Phuket. Tip: be sure to enjoy the curry alongside some salted fried beef or perhaps an omelette.

In a field that included superstar Taylor Swift, who had the most nominations of the night, the Seattle-based duo won for Best Video with Downtown. “I had no idea we were going to win an award,” Macklemore told the gala ceremony in Milan. “We’re not on a major label; we don’t have a big budget. What you guys give to us, we give back to you in the art we make,” Macklemore said, referring to fans. The duo, best known for their 2012 gay equality anthem Same Love shot the video for the funky track Downtown in Spokane, Washington, showing street life as Macklemore shops for a moped and leads a street @thephuketnews

Justin Bieber. parade. Pop sensation Bieber, whose long-awaited fourth album Purpose comes out next month, appeared in a red jumpsuit as he performed his new hit What Do You Mean? driven by a mellow electronic beat. The Canadian singer took home awards for Best Male, Best Collaboration and Best Look – for which he joked, “I got these looks from my mum.” Bieber hinted that he was happy to win attention for his music, not his legal troubles or often turbulent personal life. “Thank you, it’s been a long couple of years. I just feel that this is pretty awesome to be recognised for my music,”

Bieber said. Best Video is determined by MTV’s editorial team, but most categories are decided through fans’ voting. Best Song went to Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood, whose video – a starstudded action clip with feminist undertones – landed Video of the Year at the main US-based MTV awards in August. R&B star Rihanna, who is also preparing to release a long-awaited album, won Best Female and British boy band One Direction scored in the Best Pop category. Nicki Minaj won in the hip-hop category, as she did at the main MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles in August. AFP

Ronins charge Iron Bulls Phuket take much needed three points against Bangok FC FOOTBALL The Phuket News ed itor@classactmed ia.co.th

M

ost of the 1,100 players, staff and fans at a wet and windy Surakul Stadium last Saturday night ( O ct 24 ) were relieved when the final whistle blew, as Phuket FC sealed a 2-1 victory against Bangkok FC in a crucial match for the Ronins. The exception was the group of 100 “Bangkok Bulligans” fan club who’d ventured down from the capital to show their support. Going into Saturday’s game, the Ronins had been without a win in their previous eight games and had dropped to 18 th place in the Y amaha League Division O ne table. Their opponents meanwhile sat in 6th. Both teams were on the back foot in the early stages of the game, but Phuket held possession and looked the more dominant of the teams. And it was Phuket who

Not long after the goal the rain started to fall and the fans ran for cover. However, it

had little bearing on the game at that stage and in the 3 4 th minute a long range shot from asan amarnsin deflected off a Bangkok defender and went ust wide of the near post. Two minutes later Bangkok pulled the game back to 1-1 when Pollawut Kwah-sent a cross from the left which found the head of Ramnarong od an who beautifully put the ball past Ronin’s keeper

Piyawat Intarapim. The teams went in at halftime level at 1-1. The rain was falling harder at the start of the second-half making the pitch much more difficult to play on. he onins had the first chance of the half when oh i took a free-kick 20 yards outside the penalty box, but his curling shot went ust wide of the goal.

ut ust three minutes later Surakul erupted as the Phuket fans celebrated their second goal. A high cross from the right caused confusion among Bangkok’s defence and keeper, the ball fell to Berlin positioned at the back post and he slotted the ball home for his second of the game and 15 th of the season. His two goals now mean that he is the club’s all time

leading scorer in a single season, with still 8 matches left to add to his tally. Conditions got worse as the second-half went on making the pitch almost impossible to play on, but the game continued. After four minutes of stoppage time the final whistle blew and Phuket celebrated a long awaited home win. Speaking after the game, Phuket’s coach ‘ Dang’ told reporters that credit had to be given to the entire team who fought with all their heart. “This win has brought encouragement and confidence back to the team. But we have to accept that from now on every game is a hard fight for us. The result lifted Phuket one place to 17 th place in the table on 3 2 points. Thai golf lands big names GOLF DEFENDING CHAMPION Lee Westwood, world No.4 Bubba Watson and No.23 Martin Kaymer have confirmed their participation in the Thailand Golf Championship, to be held at Amata Spring Country Club in Chonburi from December 10-13, organisers said this week. Also in the fifth edition of the US$1 million Asian Tour event will be 2003 champion Sergio Garcia and 2016 European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke, the organisers said. The 42-year-old Westwood, seeking an unprecedented third Thailand Golf Championship title, said in a statement that it is always great to return to the course. Former world No.1 Westwood, who is now ranked 46th, added, “The tournament is one of the most enjoyable weeks on my schedule. “So, it’s going to be great to return to a course where I’ve enjoyed success in the past. “Both my wins [in the event] are special and different – shooting 60 in 2011 to win by seven, and then

Lee Westwood with the trophy after winning the Thailand Golf Championship last year. Photo: Bangkok Post putting in a good round in tough conditions last year to win by a shot.” In Watson and Kaymer, Westwood faces a pair of major champions who are returning with their sights set firmly on a title that has narrowly eluded them in the past. “The Thailand Golf Championship is always a blast,” said two-time Masters winner Watson, whose best result in his three appearances at Amata Spring came in 2012 when he finished in a share of second behind Charl Schwartzel. “The hospitality during the week really is second to none and I’ve made a lot of great friends in Thailand over the years. Every time I tee it

up I want to win, I want my name on that trophy.” Kaymer, whose last victory came at the 2014 US Open, will have something to prove in Thailand. “Coming so close on my debut last year makes me all the more determined take the silverware home with me this time,” said the 30-year-old German, whose first major title arrived after he defeated Watson in a play-off at the 2010 PGA Championship. Apart from the prize money, four places for next year’s British Open are offered here for the golfers who are not already exempt from golf’s oldest major championship through other categories. It is the second straight year for the tournament to offer British Open berths. With 126 players in the field, Thailand will be led by world No.32 Thongchai Jaidee, No.49 Kiradech Aphibarnrat and No.89 Prayad Marksaeng. “Playing on home soil makes the tournament a very important tournament for me,” said 45-year-old Thongchai, who along with Kiradech, are playing at the Turkish Airlines Open in Turkey this week. B

eleag ue red Chelsea manager J osé Mourinho was hit with a misconduct charge from the Football Association on Monday ( O ct 26) following his half-time rant in the Premier League champions’ shock 2-1 defeat against W est Ham. Mourinho is already appealing against a £ 5 0,000 ( B1,7 7 5 ,67 5 ) fine and suspended one-match stadium ban for comments made about officials following helsea s home loss against Southampton earlier this month. A nd he faces f ur ther charges after being sent to the stands by J onathan Moss for letting rip at the referee when he went to see him in the officials changing room during the interval at Upton Park on Saturday ( O ct 24 ) . “J ose Mourinho has been charged with misconduct in relation to his language and/ or behaviour towards the match officials in or around the dressing room area at half-time,” an A statement confirmed. Silvino Louro, one of Mourinho’s assistants, had already been sent off earlier in the London derby following his protests after Nemanja Matic was sent off for two bookable offences and he has also been charged with misconduct. Mourinho was infuriated both by the Matic dismissal and the decision ruling Cesc Fabregas offside when the helsea midfielder finished off a W illian pass for what would have been the equaliser. After suffering the indignity of having to sit among celebrating W est Ham fans as Andy Carroll headed in the late winner, he then ignored Premier League regulations by refusing to speak to the media after the match and is li ely to face a another fine as

Chelsea’s manager Jose Mourinho faces further charges after being sent to the stands by Jonathan Moss for letting rip at the referee when he went to see him in the officials’ changing room during the interval. Mourinho’s suspended stadium ban relates to any future critical comments he makes to the media however, so his latest antics won’t trigger that punishment. Both Chelsea and W est Ham have also been charged for failing to control their players in the aftermath of the challenge which led to Matic’s dismissal. “Chelsea coach Silvino Louro has also been charged with misconduct in relation to his behaviour which led to his 4 5 th minute dismissal from the technical area,” the FA statement added. “W est Ham have been charged for failing to control their players in the 4 4 th minute of the game and Chelsea have also been charged with the same offence for an alleged breach in the 4 5 th minute of the game.

Arsenal’s defender Calum Chambers pictured in action on August 24, moved from Saints to the Gunners in July 2014 for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £11 million. Mourinho’s outburst at Moss was a further sign he is struggling to cope as the pressure mounts following Chelsea’s miserable run. The Blues are languishing in 15 th place, nine points adrift

of the top four after their fifth league defeat of the season. A statement from Arsenal read: “W e acted in good faith throughout in this transfer and had no reason to believe that the player’s representative was not authorised to be involved in the transfer negotiations. “The FA fully recognised that there was no intention to mislead on Arsenal’s part. “W e have improved our procedures to prevent this happening again.” A FP

LEWIS JUMPS AT HIS TRIPLE CROWN BOX OF NEUTRALS

ewis Hamilton became the first-ever Briton to win backto-back championships when he snatched victory from his teammate Nico Rosberg over a chaotic United States Grand Prix weekend. Almost no pre-race laps were turned in Austin as Cyclone Patricia bore down on the Americas, causing heavy rainfall on Friday, Saturday and the early parts of Sunday. Qualifying was postponed to Sunday morning due to the undrivable conditions that dominated Saturday afternoon, and even then only got so far as Q2, which decided the grid. Hamilton qualified second, but he needed only to win this race to eliminate Mercedes teammate Nico

Rosberg from contention and have Sebastian Vettel finish no higher than third – the season’s most common finishing configuration and ultimately eventuated again in Austin – but assembling his rivals in the right order proved to be anything but straightforward. It was a chaotic grand prix – itself oddly reflective of Hamilton’s own aggressive and instinctive approach to driving – in which every leading driver’s advantage was susceptible to changing weather conditions and frequent interruptions by the safety car. Hamilton opened proceedings with an aggressive move for the lead at the sharp first corner, deliberately running Rosberg off road and behind the two approaching Red Bull Racing drivers Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo. But the Mercedes cars were obviously lacking the unbeatable pace advantage they had used to crush the

competition for the balance of the season. Red Bull, yet to record a win this season, put the hammer down. Kv yat a nd R iccia rdo swamped Rosberg and immediately set out for the lead. By lap 16 Ricciardo was past and immediately set about building up a buffer with such swiftness one could have mistakenly thought he was driving one of his team’s unbeatable championshipwinning machines from the turn of the decade. As the track dried, however, Red Bull’s advantage shrank Until Mercedes proved irresistible once more – but this time it was the lightningquick laps being turned by Sebastian Vettel that threatened the standard order after Ferrari gambled on harder tyres during a lap-22 safety car. A second safety car intermission that curtailed the Ferrari, but the short interlude gave Mercedes enough time

Lewis Hamilton celebrates taking his third driver’s championship in Texas last Sunday. Photo: Mark Ralston-AFP to pit only Nico Rosberg. The sport was already pencilling in a second title showdown at the Mexican Grand Prix just seven days later, but a third safety car intermission gifted Hamilton the stop he needed to take the race to Rosberg in a straight fight. The champion-to-be had 10 laps to make his move, but required just three to force Rosberg into an error on a wet kerb. From there the deal

was sealed: Lewis Hamilton was a triple world champion. “I can’t really find the right words right this second to tell you how amazing this feels,” he said on the podium, visibly emotional. “I couldn’t have done it without this team, who have empowered me for the last three years, really taken me on board and really helped nurture me with the car and just faultless. “I love you guys, thank you so much for everything

you do for me.” However, Rosberg accused Hamilton of being “extremely aggressive” and “going one step too far” at the start of the grand prix. But he did add, “He deserves the championship. He has driven very well all year and he has been consistent and it is well deserved.” Listen to Live89.5 every Saturday to hear Box of Neutrals talk everything F1. thephuketnews
