Union Pines Band

F

or the third year in a row, the Union Pines Marching Band will open the Buggy Festival after the Presentation of Colors and opening words at 9 a.m. The Union Pines Marching Vikings is a high school band unlike any other. The band, under the direction of Rob Hill, compete in the largest competition divisions in marching band competitions. The marching band competes against 4A and 5A schools, despite their classification as a 3A school — this is very rare and not

typical for a high school band. The band is quite accomplished for being a high school marching band. They have received straight superior ratings at all of their competitions. The marching band has also represented the state of North Carolina at the National Festival of States performance in San Antonio, Texas, which was a very prestigious honor. They will play a selection of songs to officially open all Buggy Festival activities.

New Children’s Activities To Premiere At Buggy Fest

C

hanges will be made to the Children’s Area this year with a whole assortment of fun and games, brand new to the Buggy Festival. This year, the area is more interactive, as children can really have fun. Activities, of course, are always free and open to children of all ages. This year, there will be a 50 foot zip it obstacle course and a 21 foot screamer slide for the first time. The bungee trampoline will also be returning to the children’s activities. There will also be a foam pit — yes, wet foam so prepared to get a little wet. The Scrap Exchange will be returning with their wonderful, wide variety of stuff to let children’s imaginations run wild. The fire department will also be hosting simulated fires in their Fire Safety Trailer where children can learn how to protect themselves during an emergency. With so much wonderful and exciting firsttime activities for children to enjoy, there is no reason to to attend the Buggy Festival and have a little fun.

Janice Bias

J

anice was born in Hinton, West Virginia and attended High Point University. Janice enjoys playing bingo, reading mystery books, and especially loves walking. Peak Resources Pinelake: George “Duke” Hearne and Mary Jackson George “Duke” Hearne

G

eorge “Duke” Hearne was born in 1951 at St. Joseph of the Pines Hospital in Southern Pines. He grew up in the Whispering Pines area with his four brothers and one sister. His father, Henry, was a truck driver and his mother Catherine was a homemaker who worked as a bus driver and cafeteria worker at Vass-Lakeview Elementary School, later on in her life. The family had horses where Duke learned to become an accomplished barrel racer as a youth. Duke attended Sandhills Farmlife School where he was on the baseball team. He attended Union Pines High School and graduated in 1970. After high school, he worked for Robert Lea and married Susan Side

in 1972. Together, they had two sons and a daughter. Duke worked for Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad rom 1973 to 1977. On July 5, 1976, accompanied by his youngest son, Paul, Duke assisted the head engineer with presenting the old Aberdeen and Rockfish steam locomotive at the Bicentennial celebration in Aberdeen. He began work at ARO (Ingersoll-Rand) in 1979, where he spent the remainder of his career. Duke was also a first responder and volunteer fire fighter for many years, serving on Pine Hill, Robbins, and Cameron Fire Departments. Duke has always had a love affair with cars. As a younger man, he was especially proud of his cobalt blue 1964 Barracuda. He is especially proud of his four granddaughters and one grandson.

TSHIRTS

Mary has a deep love for plants and animals. She enjoys planting flowers and has raised chickens and ducks at her home, going as far as constructing a pond at her home for her ducks to enjoy. Mary also loves accessories; dressing up is one of her many expertise. Mary is a minister who has been preaching for many years. When she was younger, she loved to travel to many churches to spread the Word of God. Mary had had many different jobs, but she is most fond of taking care of the elderly and children. Her hobbies include reading her Bible, playing bingo, and interacting with other residents. At Pinelake, she loves to participate and help in many group activities. Mary is a true social butterfly.
