‘Full of Life’ County Graduates Encouraged to Make Most of Opportunities BY LEIGH PEMBER Newsroom Intern

ith caps thrown high and teary-eyed parents, Moore County’s seniors will graduate this year with satisfaction, knowing the past four years were not in vain. Graduation day is bittersweet, as four years of hard work and fond memories culminate in a one-hour ceremony and a piece of paper. Everyone feels emotional on graduation day, even the teachers and administrators who guided and advised the students along the way. Looking back, Debby Giacolone, assistant principal for 12th grade at Pinecrest High School, had great things to say about the class of 2011. “I think they’re full of life, Giacolone says. “There’s never a dull moment with this class. Giacolone also gave the class advice on moving forward. “If you’re presented with an opportunity, make the most of that opportunity, she says. “Don’t look back 20 years from now and say, ‘I wish I’d done that.’ Kristin Blue, senior class adviser at Pinecrest High School, has three principles she wishes to instill in the graduates. “Plan ahead, stay organized and make smart decisions, especially on Fridays, she says. Pinecrest graduation will take place Saturday, June 11, at 8 a.m. in the John Williams Stadium. If it rains, graduation will be moved to Saturday, June 11, at 8 p.m. in the John W. Williams Stadium. If it is still raining

W

at that time, graduation will be Sunday, June 12, at 4 p.m. in the Robert E. Lee Auditorium. Union Pines graduation is scheduled for Friday, June 10, at 8 p.m. on the UPHS Stadium Field. If it rains, the ceremony will be rescheduled for Friday, June 11, at 4 p.m. on the stadium field. The next rain date is Sunday, June 12, at 4 p.m. on the stadium field if it is not raining, and in the auditorium if it is. The O’Neal School’s commencement occurred on Friday, May 27. North Moore graduation is slated for Friday, June 10, at 8 p.m. on the football field, weather permitting. If it rains, the ceremony will be held inside with limited seating. While the class of 2011 has too many accomplishments to list them all, here are a few: I Moore County’s test takers have gotten smarter. The average SAT score on the critical reading and math portions went up three points to 1,048. This is 40 points above the state average and 31 points above the national.

The average critical reading score was 21 points higher than the state average and 17 points higher than the national. County average math scores were also higher than the state and national averages. I It has been a great year for Pinecrest’s athletes.

Connor Kelly, Addy George, Faronte’ Drakeford, Jennie Joy, Landon Sherwood and Dylan Harris all won Southeastern Conference Player/Runner of the Year in their respective sports. I Union Pines baseball shattered the state’s singlegame home-run record of nine by two home runs. The team made it to the third round of the NCHSAA state playoffs for the first time ever and ended its successful season with a record of 19-8. I Pinecrest’s baseball team had some major accomplishments as well. Pitcher Dillon Maples broke a school

record by striking out 20 batters in one game. The team tied the school record with 25 wins and made it to the third round of the playoffs. I Four seniors, each from one of the county’s high schools, were nominated for the Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills’ Junior Builders Cup this May. A Union Pines High School senior received the award along with a $2,500 scholarship. Lindsay Caddell was awarded for her achievements in academics, athletics, school activities and community service. I Track and field for all three schools enjoyed success at the conference, regional and state levels.

Some individuals include Tashonna Farmer, of North Moore, who finished second in the 400-meter dash at the 1A State Track Championship; and Tashi Whitney, of Union Pines, who won the Mideast 3A regional high jump championship. I Union Pines had numerous student-athletes receive all-conference honors this year. These include, in no particular order: Taylor O’Neil, John Huskey, Allen Cha, Trevor Morris, Joseph Morris, Tre’ Egerton, Ryan Hull, Tyesha McLean, Connor Kelly, Landon Sherwood, Tyler Clark, George Hayes, Alexa Zoellner, Beth Hieronymus, Haley Germain, Tashi Whitney, Amber Nunnaley, Cristina Morcom, Jay Stalls, Jon Fondrie, Connor Reilly, Jake Sauer and Brandon Mawyer.

Morcom and McLean received all-region honors as well. I Pinecrest’s Speech and Debate team enjoyed its most successful year yet. The team won the 2010-2011 North Carolina State Championship and had several members qualify for the 2011 National Forensic League National Championship. These members include Hannah Sellers, Casey Suglia and Zach Jones. I Two North Moore students studied hard to obtain the coveted valedictorian and salutatorian spots. Tyler Alan Wallace earned the valedictorian position and Jonathan Brooks Henley will graduate as salutatorian. Information for other valedictorians and salutatorians was unavailable at press time.

Record Number to Graduate From SCC Solid Rock School BY KAREN MANNING Special to The Pilot

Sandhills Community College will celebrate the end of another successful academic year with 675 candidates for graduation — the largest number of students to graduate in the college’s 48-year history. Commencement will be held on the Boyd Library Green at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. Students graduating this year include those who have studied Automotive Technologies, Computer Technologies, Cosmetology and Esthetics, Education, Engineering Technologies, Golf Course Management, Health Sciences, Hospitality and Culinary Arts, Landscape Gardening, Management and Business Technologies, Nursing and Public Services. Those choosing college transfer through the University Studies program will be awarded an Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) or Associate in Science (AS). Some will transfer with a transfer core diploma. Now is the time to begin the registration process to attend Sandhills

Community College this summer or fall semester. Summer classes begin Tuesday, May 24. Fall semester begins on Monday, Aug. 15. Sandhills has an “open-door” admission policy. This means that a high

school graduate or anyone 16 years or older with a high school equivalency certificate (GED) or an adult high school diploma can attend Sandhills. It takes just five easy steps to attend college at Sandhills. Apply online or at Student Services in Stone Hall, request transcript(s) from

past colleges or high school, take the Accuplacer assessment at the college, meet for pre-advisement and register for classes. Students are not required to take standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT to enroll. However, the college can use those scores for class placement. SCC offers the Accuplacer, a placement assessment tool that is used to make sure that students begin at the proper level classes. Those who are 18 years or older and do not have a high school diploma, GED or adult high school diploma should consider Adult Basic Education, GED certification or Adult High School classes that are offered through the college’s Continuing Education Division. SCC GED graduates qualify for a $250 scholarship if they move into a curriculum program at the college. All information about attending Sandhills can be found on the college website: www.sandhills.edu or contact the Admissions Office at (910) 695-3781 for curriculum program and class information.

Graduates Students Solid Rock Christian School held its graduation ceremony Friday, May 27, at Page Memorial Methodist Church in Aberdeen. During the commencement ceremony, diplomas were awarded to K-4 graduates Reed Davenport, Justin Booker,

Zaviyon Carthens, Jay Santana and Evie Rusilowicz; and K-5 graduates Josiah Lofton, Hayley Skoog, Taylor Booker, Terrque Morton, Paula Gray Bear and Zechariah Mashburn. Solid Rock Christian School is at 311 E. Maple St., Aberdeen.

First SandHoke Students to Graduate BY KAREN MANNING

Special to The Pilot

Not only will Sandhills Community College celebrate the end of another successful academic year with 675 candidates for graduation — the largest number of students to graduate in the college’s 48-year history — the first cohort of SandHoke Early College High School students will also graduate. Commencement will be held on the Boyd Library Green at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. SandHoke is a free, innovative educational program that makes it possible for first-generation college students to earn a high school diploma and an associate’s degree within five years of entering ninth grade. These students will have two graduations — one from SandHoke and a second from Sandhills. This will place them at least two years ahead of traditional high school students and will save them and their families thousands of dollars in college tuition. The personnel offices, meeting facilities and study areas for SandHoke is located in Blue Hall on the Sandhills campus. One large wall is filled with the students’ acceptance letters from universities throughout the nation. The impressive success of SandHoke students’ college acceptance speaks volumes about the program. Thirtyfour students will graduate with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree — 22 Associate in Arts degrees, 10 Associate in Science, and one Associate in Fine Arts. One student will finish with a transfer core diploma and four students will graduate with a high school diploma and numerous semester hours of transferable college credits. “I was a counselor for four years at Pinecrest High School, taught English for one year in Thailand, and returned to Pinecrest for one year, before coming to SandHoke,” said Eric Richardson, director of high school and college relations. “I am excited to be part of something new and different. This innovative program allows me to be creative and provide input. The intimate cohort size is very conducive to teaching and learning. “SandHoke is beneficial for any student,” Richardson continued. “Since the program began five years ago, no student has dropped out of school, and only a few students left the program and returned to a traditional school. We are all very proud of this success.” Two students, Aaron Nelson and Joshua Harris, both of Raeford, were accepted by every university to which they applied. Nelson has been accepted to attend the University of Minnesota, East Carolina University, Appalachian State University and the University of North

The 2011 graduates of SandHoke Early College High School are (left to right, bottom to top) Joshua Harris, Brittany Parkins, Ceslie Young, Amanda Organ, Scherita Cambridge, Jessica Holcomb, Sharon Aguero, Nakischa Cambridge, Phillip Shepherd, Garrett Tew, Joseph Tyler, Crystal Blue, Shaquelle Durham, Cameron Little, Christopher Moore, Courtney Blue, Marissa Holcomb, Airelinda Tausaga, Nadia Robinson, Brandon McLean, Tiana Purcell, Aaron Nelson and Spencer Dawson. Carolina at Chapel Hill. Harris has been accepted to North Carolina State University, Campbell University, East Carolina University, Hampton University (Va.), North Carolina Central University, Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Nelson, who was part of the first SandHoke ninthgrade class, is graduating with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree. He earned a 4.4 weighted GPA (3.8 unweighted) and scored 1940 on the SAT. Nelson will major in computer science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He flourished in small classes. “I liked it that the teachers were really involved with us throughout our education,” he said. His sister, Casey, also attends SandHoke and is currently in the 10th grade. “My parents have been so happy with this experience,” Nelson continued. “They figure that SandHoke saved them $40,000 in college expenses.” “I believe that I am in a much better position than if I had attended a traditional high school,” Harris said. During his studies, Harris participated in the North Carolina Section Project SEED program, a statewide, year-round science enrichment internship program. This program financially supports and encourages

talented, disadvantaged North Carolina high school students to pursue terminal graduate and professional school degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) disciplines through a scientific research internship experience. Each student is involved in a research project in chemistry or chemistry-related sciences under the guidance and supervision of an experienced scientist from Duke University, North Carolina State University or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Project SEED provides students with SAT prep classes and also helps students to attain scholarships and college admissions. Harris finished the fiveyear early college high school program in just four years, earning his high school diploma and an Associate in Arts degree. He credits SandHoke and his SEED internship for encouraging him to major in chemistry at Wake Forest University and inspiring him to pursue a career in pharmacy. Sandhoke started in 2006, thanks to a unique partnership between Sandhills Community College and the Hoke County School System. Today, there are nearly 220 students enrolled in the program.
