ABOUT US “To every thing (turn, turn, turn) there is a season (turn, turn, turn) and a time to every purpose…” (Pete Seeger. 1959 [by way of the Book of Ecclesiastes]) Another year passes by quickly, and we find ourselves gearing up for the Autumn season and the inevitable rush towards winter and Christmas. Autumn is always our busiest time at the venue, with the usual mix of community group shows, professional tours, family shows, music, film and spoken word work all combining together to create a great buzz around the venue and Bedford as a whole. As with previous seasons we’ve seen themes emerging and coalescing to create interesting conversations; places where shows form connections between each other. That’s part of the alchemy of programming work for a Community focussed venue. There are two repeating themes that have emerged that can best be summed up in one of our shows: ‘Hymns for Robots’ by Noctium (returning after The Country Doctor) explores the pioneering work of electronic music and computer genius: Delia Derbyshire [widely known for her work creating the iconic Doctor Who theme]. In this show, the twin themes of pioneering and famous women, and science combine with dramatic success. Throughout the rest of the season we see these themes returned to repeatedly: whether it’s Certain Age with their devised piece ‘Vote!’; or BDC’s ‘The Thrill of Love’ exploring the story of Ruth Ellis; or ‘Enter the Dragons,’ an hilarious romp through what it means to deal with ageing; groundbreaking women from history and strong female characters appear all over. So much so that we’ve decided to dedicate our entire film programme this season to films with compelling female leads and narratives. This film programme is running over into 2019, and we are actively soliciting suggestions from the local community to find the best films from across time and space, regardless of age, nationality or budget. If you have a suggestion that you think we have missed then please let us know through any of our social media channels, by email, or just give us a call. We have also made the decision that from this season all our future film screenings, regardless of the original language, will always be screened with English subtitles. We want to open up the venue to as many people in our local community as possible. So whether you are just learning English, speak English as a Second (or third) language, are d/Deaf, hard of hearing or anything else you can come to one of our screenings and know that the film will be subtitled, making your visit a little easier. This season we also see the completion of the yearlong strand of work MINDSCAPES, dealing with different stories around living with mental health issues, and working alongside local clinical partners to explore future opportunities. With the rescheduled ‘HELP!’ arriving to the venue, and an exciting visit from another young Coventry-based company Strictly Arts with their show ‘FREEMAN’ using a historical lens to analyse mental health issues within the black community. We are really proud of the work that MINDSCAPES has helped us bring to the venue, and we’re hopeful that the programme will have another life going forwards as we explore further the relationships and partnerships we’ve developed. I hope everyone has a safe, happy and fun-filled time, we look forwards to a warm late summer, a misty and mellow autumn and joyful festive period and we look forward to seeing you all at the venue time again during that time. ABOUT US Mental Health Programme We continue 2018’s strand of shows exploring Mental Health, with exciting work exploring depression, anxiety, grief, and PTSD, from sequin-encrusted day dreams to much darker journeys into the psyche. Presented in partnership with Mind BLMK, Bedfordshire and Luton NHS Mental Health services provided by ELFT, and other local organisations.
Fantastic For Families At The Place, it is really important to us that we make sure the venue is open and welcoming to as many people from our community as possible, as we really want to ensure we are instilling the magic of live theatre in the next generation of audiences, theatregoers and, hopefully, theatre-makers! We are committed to doing even more to improve the experience for all going forwards. We are very happy to display the Fantastic for Families accreditation at the venue as part of the Family Arts Standards. We are building on our reputation for being friendly and cosy, and inviting families to treat ‘Our Place as Your Place,’ through the continuation of our #DramaInPyjamas initiative:
DramasInPyjamas Worried that your children are going to have a late night if they come to see one of our fantastic family shows?... why not come to see a show in your pyjamas or onesies so all your children have to do when they get home is pop straight to bed? You will also be super-comfy, and it adds a bit of extra special sparkle to a theatre experience. With extra special early evening performances aimed just at families and younger audiences it makes for an extra special evening together at The Place. Thanks to Community Dental Services UK’s CDS Action, we can provide all children attending with free toothbrushes and free toothpaste, and everything you need to clean your toothie-pegs at the theatre - making getting home and into bed even easier! Look out for the #DramasInPjyamas’ hashtag on social media.

FULL £16 / CONCESSIONS £12
This year, Bedfordshire Youth Opera return to The Place to celebrate the centenary of Leonard Bernstein’s birth with their exciting production of his opera Candide. Following the story of a naive young man who, whilst searching for his lost love Cunegonde, encounters many adventures. Slowly, through his experiences, he learns that the philosophy “All’s for the best in this best of all possible worlds”, taught to him by his Westphalian tutor, is sadly far from true. However, all is not doom and gloom; he meets many friendly faces along the way, including a group of Jesuits, five dismembered floating heads and an old woman with only one buttock! Bernstein’s music is glorious, and includes the soprano show-stopper “Glitter and Be Gay” as well as many other tunes you’ll be humming for weeks afterwards! This dedicated company of accomplished singers and performers always provide an excellent night’s entertainment, and past members of the company have gone on to sing at The Coliseum, The Royal Opera House and even La Scala. Whatever your musical tastes, you’ll be guaranteed an evening of tears, laughs and golden sheep!

Inspired by the first man in America to plead Insanity as his defence, award-winning writer Camilla Whitehill and Strictly Arts examine the unspoken link between mental health and systemic racism. Throughout time and across waters, from William Freeman to Sarah Reed, six true stories are threaded together and told through physical theatre, spoken word, gospel singing, shadow puppetry and more. History is bound to repeat itself when the thumb is permanently bearing down on the loop button, so has anything really changed? “So much on offer in this play on so many different levels, the standard and precision of the acting was faultless.” Behind The Arras “The play capitalises on the company’s impressive versatility, juxtaposing monologue with physical theatre, gospel singing with shadow puppetry and a searing rage against injustice with a winning sense of humour.” What’s On Live “The troupe’s performances were so balletic, graceful, witty and deeply felt that the audience was gripped from beginning to end.” Leamington Courier strictlyarts.co.uk

FULL £10 / CONCESSION £9

‘The man of many characters’, actor Neil Gore, presents an Edwardian Magic Show using Magic Lantern and projected animation, with political conjuring tricks, live music and song, based on the classic novel The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. Robert Tressell’s novel about life in the building trades was first published over 100 years ago, and was barely noticed. Since then, in one edition after another, The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists has been passed from hand to hand, and won itself a place not only in the folklore of working people, but also in literary history as the first authentic English working-class novel. In this entertaining one-man show we meet the familiar characters from the book; participate in the famous Great Money Trick; enjoy the scenes, speeches, and songs that trace “twelve months in hell” as the painters and decorators struggle to maintain themselves and families through hard work, poverty, and the constant fear of unemployment, whilst renovating a large town-house for the local mayor - Mayor Sweater. This witty, humorous, enduring and absorbing classic story is brought to life by Neil Gore using his extensive knowledge of the book and the play, having performed it in many versions over thirty-five years.

After school one day she sees a small crowd from their school bullying and taunting her classmate Samir with racist abuse. “Paki, Taliban, terrorist” they shout at the young Iraqi refugee. “Leave him alone. A hostess in the seedy nightclubs of 1950s London, she shot her lover six times in broad daylight. Why did she do it? Why did she offer no defence? Who gave her the gun? “The Thrill of Love”, based on documentary evidence, is a gripping tale of vice, murder and obsession. THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI is a darkly comedic drama from Academy Award® winner Martin McDonagh (IN BRUGES). Mildred Hayes (Academy Award® winner Frances McDormand), a hard-nosed mother, is seeking justice for her murdered daughter. With no arrests after seven months, Mildred puts up three roadside signs with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Academy Award® nominee Woody Harrelson), the town’s revered chief of police, to goad him into action. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing’s law enforcement is only exacerbated. They don’t take kindly to the provocation; and the townsfolk are on their side. But Mildred doesn’t care about ruffling a few feathers. In fact, she’s happy to pluck the whole bird. In English with English Subtitles. “Martin McDonagh’s blackly comic drama dares to be messy and difficult, wrongfooting its audience while remaining staggeringly entertaining.” The Guardian 2018

Enter the Dragons is a riotous, surreal odyssey which explodes the myths about getting older. The show explores ideals of beauty, sex and feminism as the protagonist must overcome challenges set by mystical characters who inhabit the landscape of the Banished. Dooley and Edwards present a comedic call to arms, marrying a wry exploration of the trials and tribulations of of ageing with a delightfully dark surrealism as our protagonist embarks on a quest to halt the ageing process - or at least rebrand it. A knock-out combination of joy and dissent for anyone considering ageing. ‘they marry hilarity and sincerity with such remarkable precision, it had the audience in fits of laughter and heartfelt tears.’ Broadway Baby – WINNER Bobby Award, Brighton Fringe 2017 ‘Utterly hilarious, simply ingenious.’ Reviews Hub

Taking place over the course of twenty-four hours, this witty tale about the politically corrupt upper-classes is one of Oscar Wilde’s finest works. Government minister Sir Robert Chiltern and his wife, Lady Gertrude, hold a large, alcohol-fuelled high-society party. Everything is going swimmingly until the outrageous yet charming Mrs Cheveley appears with damning proof of Sir Robert’s previous financial fraudulence. Unless he reverses his position on the Argentine Canal that she’s invested in, Mrs Cheveley will blackmail Sir Robert. He soon agrees to her demands but, when his wife finds out about his change of heart, she won’t allow him to compromise his principles. So, therein lies the moral dilemma - if he does what Mrs Cheveley wants, he’ll lose his wife, if he doesn’t, he’ll lose his position and almost certainly his wife, too! What follows quickly becomes a tangled web of lies, leading to strange mix-ups and a lot of confusion.

At an isolated mansion in the snowy countryside of 1950s France, a family gathers for the holiday season... But there will be no celebration--their beloved patriarch has been murdered! The killer can only be one of the eight women closest to the man of the house. Was it his powerful wife? His spinster sister-in-law? His miserly mother-in-law? Maybe the insolent chambermaid or the loyal housekeeper? Could it possibly have been one of his two young daughters? A surprise visit from the victim’s chic sister sends the household into a tizzy, encouraging hysterics, exacerbating rivalries, and encompassing musical interludes. Comedic situations arise with the revelations of dark family secrets. Seduction dances with betrayal. The mystery of the female psyche is revealed. There are eight women--and each is a suspect. Each has a motive. Each has a secret. Beautiful, tempestuous, intelligent, sensual, and dangerous... One of them is guilty. Which one is it? In FRENCH with ENGLISH SUBTITLES. “Here it is at last, the first Agatha Christie musical, almost everyone has an individual song to sing, making this light-hearted murder mystery into a Gallic musical version of Gosford Park.” The Guardian 2002
