This Season “Growth is painful. Change is painful. But, nothing is as painful as staying stuck where you do not belong.” N. R. NARAYANA MURTHY

We start this season with a huge thank you to everyone who came to The Place during 2018 and made it the busiest and most successful year at the venue since we opened 15 years ago.

“Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.” MARK TWAIN

...AND WE WOULD LIKE TO THINK – A GOOD PLACE.

OUR FRIENDS COME IN MANY DIFFERENT GUISES AND IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT THEY WISH OUR RELATIONSHIP TO BE. The Place operates through the support of many diverse groups. We are supported by individuals and organisations e.g. volunteers, ‘Friends’, funders and our audiences, as well as our dedicated staff who give more than they are called upon to give. We are very fortunate to receive tremendous support from all these but, as the Place continues to grow, there is always room for more. If you feel that you would like to play a part in our continued development there are many ways you can do so.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER If you have time to spare, a talent or simply an interest in meeting people of a like mind, why not come and join us? To find out more about volunteering opportunities in 2019 email: volunteer@theplacebedford.org.uk or speak to the duty manager on performance nights. You are free to commit as much or as little as you want. One thing we can guarantee is that you will be made welcome. 4

BECOME A FRIEND OF THE PLACE Being a Friend brings with it many benefits. Look in this out for any shows marked with a brochure as these have a special price exclusively for our Friends. Friends tickets can be booked online (just show your membership card when you arrive). You also get to enjoy discounts on drinks at certain shows, special offers, invitations to exclusive evenings and advance notice of extra events organised after the brochure goes to print. The primary benefit our Friends have, though, is the satisfaction of helping to maintain Bedford’s only full-time community theatre. For more information about how to become a Friend pick up a leaflet in the foyer or speak to the Duty Manager when you next attend the Place or email: friends@ theplacebedford.org.uk

FUNDERS The Place Theatre is managed by Bedford Players Trust, a charity registration no: 290124 and does not receive any revenue funding though we are very fortunate to receive capital and project funding from a number of organisations - The Harpur Trust, Wixamtree Trust, The John Apthorp Charity, The Frank Branston Trust, The BFI Film Audience Network, The House of Industry Estate, The Theatres Trust, Bedford Community Dental Services, Santander Foundation and The Panacea Society, distributed through the Bedford and Luton Community Fund. In November 2018 we launched a campaign to raise additional funds towards upgrading and replacing our ticketing system and website from our supporters, to whom we are very grateful. In order to ensure that we are able to continue to offer more to our audiences, further campaigns are envisaged so please keep an eye out for them and support them if you are able.

We’ve continued to grow our team, bringing new people into our office, new volunteers into our support teams and new audiences into the venue almost every week. It was a wonderful way for us to mark our 15th anniversary, especially as we look forward to a busy and exciting, if somewhat unpredictable, future. 2019 sees the start of a new long term artistic vision for us. We continue to do those things we do best, whilst also setting out on new pathways to help us deliver better services to our audiences; continue to grow, provoke and entertain all of the communities that call Bedford home; as well as build upon the wonderful relationships we have made with professional performers and theatre makers, both locally and nationally, to ensure that Bedford continues to be an important stop on the theatre circuit for both established and emerging performers alike. We are very proud of the diverse range of work that we present at the venue, and this season is no exception; our popular programmes of work continue with events in the That’s all Folk and Mindscapes strands, and we launch a new strand of work aimed especially at entertainment for a Saturday night: ‘A Good Night Out’. We also bring back our work that explores LGBTQ+ History month, with film, theatre and other events that explore the stories and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community (locally, nationally and internationally) See the next pages for more details on our different strands of work and how you can spot them in this brochure. 2019 also sees the continuation of our year-long season of films about, by and for ‘Kick Ass Women’. It has been an amazing undertaking to research this topic, and I’ve had a huge amount of fun with colleagues at the venue (and with some significant help from our social media followers) putting together a vast season of amazing films from across the spectrum that deal with this brilliant theme. We may even need a whole other year to even scratch the surface of such a huge undertaking. It’s our busiest season of film programming ever, and we hope that you’ll join us as we continue to explore how we can increase and improve our film offer for audiences in Bedford. Thank you so much for coming with us on this journey. We’re really excited to show you the next steps that we want to take, and we hope that you’ll keep joining us at the venue. We would be nothing without the warmth and generosity of the communities of Bedford: The next 15 years starts today.

Season Launch

Programme Strands We’re always looking for artists and community organisations we can support to develop our programming, so if you have an idea, or know someone who may be interested in helping us, please get in contact with the team.

MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAMME After the successes of our 2018 strand of shows exploring Mental Health, we continue to bring theatre and film that explore the many different lived experiences. Presented in partnership with Mind BLMK, Bedfordshire and Luton NHS Mental Health services provided by ELFT, and other local organisations.

LGBTQ+ MONTH PROGRAMME To celebrate February’s LGBTQ+ history month The Place present a series of films and live events. This is part of our ongoing drive to increase representation and visibility for LGBTQ+ people at the venue, making Bedford and The Place safe environments for all LGBTQ+ people.

LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH

A GOOD NIGHT OUT Saturday evenings have traditionally been the night when people go out looking for things to do for that ‘special occasion’. At the Place we have recognised this for some time but now we are going to make an even greater effort to make the night more memorable. Not only will the productions be extremely entertaining, just right for a night out, but our front of house offer will be even greater than it normally is. Special themed cocktails, drinks deals and nibbles will be available, as well as many other ‘secrets’ known only on the night. Look out for the’ A Good Night Out’ logo in the brochure.

FANTASTIC FOR FAMILIES

Thu 10 Jan 7pm Free Event

As holders of the Family Arts Standard we believe in the importance of creating a positive atmosphere for the audiences of the future. With this in mind, we offer a range of programming and activities for a range of ages and to make them accessible to all members of the family group attending The Place.

ALL AGES

In order to achieve this, we strive to have clear pricing and ensure you are told of age appropriateness and that our staff and volunteers are helpful and able to respond to your questions and needs as parents or guardians.

As usual, there will be ice creams from Spaghetti Johns, and wine tasting from our partner at The Blue Glass, plus extracts from our community shows currently in development.

house theatre/Seth Kriebel

More details of the Family Arts Standard can be found in the leaflet available in the foyer.

Beowulf

We are also proud of our reputation for being friendly and cosy and to display the Fantastic for Families logo.

AGE 14+ PRO There is no adult content in the show, but as it invites audience interaction, there is a potential for strong language.

#DramasInPjyamas We love an evening at the theatre, and we love sharing work with younger audiences; but we don’t want you to worry that your children are going to have a late night if they come to see one of our fantastic family shows.

Before we begin, I should warn you: this story ends with a dragon. But every story ends with a dragon. If you make it to ‘Happily Ever After’ and there isn’t a dragon nearby, the story isn’t over yet. Seth Kriebel’s Beowulf is an interactive performance-game inviting you to explore the world of a legendary story from our ancient past... without leaving your seat.

Extra special early evening performances that start at 6pm are aimed just at families and younger audiences that makes for an extra special evening together at The Place. On top of that... why not come to see a show in your pyjamas or onesies? You will also be super-comfy, and it adds a bit of extra special sparkle to a theatre experience. Thanks to Community Dental Services UK’s CDS Action, we can provide all children attending with free toothbrushes and free toothpaste, and everything you need to clean your toothie-pegs at the theatre – so all your children have to do when they get home is pop straight to bed.

It’s an early start to the year with all the work coming straight back in after the festive season. We don’t want to leave you alone and miserable over the January period, so why not join us for another fun and friendly start to the season as we share more details about all the wonderful events we have coming up in 2019. A great opportunity to talk to the team here about our forthcoming plans, catch up with the rest of the audience and theatre community after the holiday break and look forward to another great year of events and excitement at The Place Bedford.

Our professional and community programming continues to go from strength to strength, with previous strands continuing and new ones coming through.

Illuminating the original epic, each show is unique, guided by your choices. An evocative soundscape accompanies your journey through strange lands, to discover forgotten monsters and bring a Viking hero’s tale back to life 1,000 years after his adventures. Why, after all these years, do we still tell each other stories about monsters that lurk in the dark…? Supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Game Play

A low-cost, family friendly festival of Games and Gaming

Sat 12 & Sun 13 Jan 10am - 8pm Suitable for 6-16 and their families (and big kids too)

MINI FILM FESTIVAL

Kick Ass Women This strand of films continues as we explore the rich landscape of films by, for and about strong females. From hard hitting and brilliant documentaries, to classics of European and World Cinema, from classics of Hollywood, to films from the past 12 months. There’s films chosen by our local community, recently remastered versions from organisations like the British Film Institute and Independent Cinema Office and a whole host of work you’ve maybe never heard of before.

Entry each day: £3 per person/ £10 family. Weekend ticket (including Beowulf ticket): £15 per person

The Place Theatre throws all of its doors open this January to start the new season with what we hope will become an annual post-Christmas event: Game Play is a full weekend dedicated to all of the great things that happen when we play games. We’re going to fill the venue with old computer games consoles, allowing mum and dad to engage in some healthy rivalry with the kids on their favourite consoles from their youth. Expect to find all kinds of cozy places to relax and play. It’s not just computer games though! After a brilliant visit to the venue in July we’ll be welcoming the team from Ghost Valley RC back with their live action remote-controlled car Mario Kart track, this time with an adults-only full competition. Bedford Board Gamers will be filling the rooms upstairs on the Sunday with a chance to get involved with a whole day playing some of the best and most exciting tabletop games for players from 6-60+ yrs old. There’s more things planned, with (we hope) an opportunity to come along and learn more about playing old-school tabletop role playing games (RPGs) as well as any other crazy fun things we can cram into the venue between now and mid-January. Best of all, the whole thing is super cheap, making it a great weekend out for the whole family in the middle of the most miserable month in the calendar.

15mins before each screening this season – All Ages FREE The film is an exploration of women in protest across the North of England and marks 100 years since the start of women’s suffrage in the UK. The film is supported by the Women’s Vote Centenary Grant Scheme. ‘A tear in my eye while watching this film. The passion for this project really shines through. I can’t wait to see it again’ – Leigh Film Society Showing women’s lives from the suffragettes to the miners’ strikes, and much more, the film’s title is inspired by the first person we encounter in the film – suffragette Elizabeth Dean who, celebrating her 100th birthday, defiantly tells the camera: ‘Between you and I, I must have been born a rebel!’ VOTE 100: BORN A REBEL (U) screens every time we run a film screening until August 2019.

Based on the real life story of the Enslein sisters, it is the purest expression of Margarethe Von Trotta’s combination of the personal and the political. Exploring the after-effects of Nazism in contemporary German society, The German Sisters is as searching on a personal level as it is on the political costs of revolution. Poetry of Genocide

AGE 12+ Join us at for an evening dedicated to exploring the voices of conflict, persecution and resistance. Featuring poetry, autobiography and prose from writers across the centuries who have experienced first-hand the savage violence of genocide and holocaust.

Rachel (a play in full mask) Mrs Rachel Levy is a survivor of Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Mrs Levy is also a survivor of the ‘Death March’ that took place when the the Nazis wanted Auschwitz emptied out as the ‘Red Army’ and the allied war effort drew ever closer. Mrs Levy is also a survivor of Bergen Belsen concentration camp, the worst camp attributed to a time when the Nazis had seemingly given up on trying to hide the horrors of The Holocaust. All hope was gone, but Rachel (our friend) survived. ‘It was a miracle!’ she told us. This play is for school groups, but Small Nose believe the lessons of the Holocaust are for us all.

Drawing on stories from writers from countries, nations, tribes and religions across the world and across time this evening of work will explore in depth how these experiences can impact the writing, challenge authority and keep the legacy of conflict and persecution alive in the mind of those of us who survive. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY

Commemoration Sun 27 Jan (see below for times) To mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Sunday 27th January, Bedford Borough will carry out a multi-faith commemoration and host a series of events. A Commemoration at the Anne Frank Tree, in Russell Park between Pembroke and Bower Street, will take place at 2.30pm on Sunday 27th January. Jim Moray Thu 31 Jan 8pm

£12 advance/£14 on the door

Frankenstein 1899 Fri 1 Feb 7.30pm £12/10 AGE RANGE10+ PRO

For 15 years Jim Moray has been at the forefront of a new movement in English traditional music. His debut album Sweet England changed the sound of folk song and won a brace of awards for its innovative melding of orchestration and electronica. Subsequent albums embraced everything from grime to Johnny Marr-esque guitar pop, but at their heart was always Jim’s unmistakeable soulful and yearning voice; singing old songs in a new way.

His sixth album Upcetera heralds a new chapter for the producer and has received the best reviews of his career, including five stars from Mojo, fRoots and R2 magazines. He has also found the time to contribute three new songs to BBC Dr Who spin-off show Class, and launched his own Low Culture Podcast.

The nineteenth century is drawing to an end, and a brave new world is set to dawn. But the new age of enlightenment and reason will soon be challenged, and scientific fact cast asunder, when the charismatic preacher, Frankenstein, shocks Britons to the core with his claims. Tomorrow’s Great Pageant

LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH LAUNCH EVENT Sat 2nd Feb 4pm-7pm FREE

Reading, Discussion and Public brainstorming

AGES TBC Post-Workers Theatre host an event which will begin to re-imagine the iconic Suffrage play A Pageant of Great Women, 1909, for a 21st century non-binary context.

LGBTQ+ HISTORY MONTH

The Play, written by Ciceley Hamilton in 1909, was a popular allegorical work of political agitation and featured the embodiment of Justice, Woman and Prejudice, with a cast of 45 historic great women to promote a feminist perspective on emancipation. For the Launch of LGBTQ+ Season at The Place, Post-Workers Theatre and Bedford Creative Arts will be joined by a panel of guest writers, critics, practitioners and community activists to collectively discuss and consider a new cast of iconic great people who can begin to represent the values and ideals of a diverse 21st century LGBTQ+ community.

A reading of the original script will be followed by discussions and collective brainstorming, working with actors, activists and designers to creatively engage with hopes, fears and ideas of alternative narratives. Want to get involved? - See p19 for more details

Josh finds the outside world a fascinating and frightening place. At a time when he is most vulnerable, a room of forgotten things quickly becomes the perfect place for him to escape reality.

In ancient China, a violent gang kidnap a general’s son to secure the release of their leader from prison. Little do they know that the general’s daughter is Golden Swallow, a mistress of disguise, with fighting skills to match. His family make a desperate attempt to help him realise there is more to life than photos on a shelf and postcards under the door.

This film is an outstanding example of the quality of pictures Shaw Brothers were capable of producing. The picture easily transcends the genre to be a period drama with martial arts (and not just a martial arts flick!) Shot in 1966, this is easily Cheng Pei-Pei’s best film. She returned to the genre with a bang in CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON playing the villainous Silver Fox. It is widely considered one of the best Hong Kong films ever made.

This is an honest and uplifting show about fear and the impact our decisions have on those we care about, told through mesmerising movement, poetic text and visual inventiveness.

Where Kids Rule the World… or at least a bit of it.

1h 32min | Documentary, History

An interactive theatre show for children aged 6+, presented by Keith Farnan (Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow).

Resurrecting the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant women who founded the modern US women’s movement from 1966 to 1971.

The grown-ups have clearly made a mess of things and so Brehon offers the boys and girls a chance to rule the island of Kidocracy. In just under an hour, they must elect leaders, come up with rules that rock and deal with all sorts of crises because running the world isn’t just all fun, fun, fun, there’s stuff to be done as well.

Director: Mary Dore SHE’S BEAUTIFUL takes us from the founding of NOW, with ladies in hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions of women’s liberation; from intellectuals like Kate Millett to the street theatrics of WITCH (Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell!).

“Kidocracy is a really entertaining, funny kid’s show with loads of great audience participation to keep all ages entertained and laughing. Brehon’s Irish charm engages the children straight away” PRIMARY TIMES

It does not shy away from controversies over race, sexual preference and leadership that arose in the women’s movement, and brilliantly captures the spirit of the time -thrilling, scandalous, and often hilarious.

Death by Design!

After the success of ‘We Are The Lions Mr Manager’ Townsend Theatre Productions return to The Place with their new show.

Written by Rob Urbinati and first performed in 2013 this play is a delightful tribute to two of the greatest practitioners of their art. Edward Bennett, a playwright, and his actress wife Sorel flee to their country house after a disastrous opening night in the West End. Various guests arrive unexpectedly and chaos ensues when one of them is murdered. It is left to Bridgit, the maid with a macabre interest in murder, to solve the crime.

In 1910 the women chainmakers of Cradley Heath focussed the world’s attention on the plight of Britain’s lowpaid women workers involved in the ‘home-working sweated industries’, hammering out chain-links in sheds in the backyards of their homes with their babies and children for 5 shillings (25p) for a 50-hour week.

We promise a hugely enjoyable evening of murder, mystery and salad.

Led by the charismatic union organiser and campaigner, Mary Reid Macarthur, hundreds of women laid down their tools to strike for a living wage. The success of the ten-week strike more than doubled their earnings and helped to make the principle of a national minimum wage a reality. Through rousing traditional songs and moving ballads, Townsend Theatre Productions reveals the horrors of sweated labour, Mary Macarthur’s stunning national campaign to expose the perpetrators of this appalling employment, the universal sympathy for the workers, the flood of donations and the events that led to a final victory.

Set ten years after the most peaceful revolution in United States history, a revolution in which a socialist government gains power.

It’s 1615, and magistrates Potts and Nowell are on a mission to arm their countrymen against a plague of devilish outsiders.

Director: Lizzie Borden Writers: Lizzie Borden (screenplay), Ed Bowes (story) Stars: Honey, Adele Bertei, Jean Satterfield

Until now their chief weapon has been Jennet Device, youngest of the Pendle Witches, the girl whose testimony condemned her entire family to the noose. But now Jennet has grown up, her eyes are starting to open, and, tonight, heads will roll.

This film presents a dystopia in which the issues of many progressive groups - minorities, liberals, gay rights organisations, feminists - are ostensibly dealt with by the government, and yet there are still problems with jobs, with gender issues, with governmental preference and violence. In New York City, in this future time, a group of women decide to organize and mobilize, to take the revolution farther than any man - and many women - ever imagined in their lifetimes.

Dawn State combine searing dialogue, haunting music and bold theatricality to explore the heart-breaking story of Britain’s most notorious witch-craft trial, in a new play by Gareth Jandrell.

“this unruly, unclassifiable film — perhaps the sole entry in the hybrid genre of radical-lesbian-feminist sci-fi vérité — premiered two years into the Reagan regime, but its fury proves as bracing today as it was back when this country began its inexorable shift to the right.” VILLAGE VOICE

THE UGLY DUCKLING MUSICAL

Ugly, hatched from a curious-looking, large brown egg, looks quite a bit different from his darling duckling brothers and sisters.

collect all the orbs and delve into the great unanswered question of the universe: what do astronauts really have for tea? Inspired by our childhood wonder of the universe, award-winning The Wardrobe Ensemble have created a unique theatrical experience for children. Fresh from a run at the National Theatre, The Star Seekers is an interactive show that explores the limitless majesty of galaxies, the solar system, shooting stars and planets through songs, silliness and anti-gravity antics.

Community Matters COMMUNITY GROUPS – THANK YOU The Place Theatre was founded by Bedford Players Trust to become a hub for the local community theatre world, a home where various groups could gather together, rehearse and perform. Since then, we have welcomed and worked with many local groups and while in recent years our programme has expanded to include touring companies, our links with the Bedford companies remain part of the lifeblood of the organisation. In our fifteenth year we are delighted to have so many exciting productions by community groups, adding a very rewarding Bedford focus to our spring season. The Place would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of the community groups that help us to be the unique venue we are.

CREATING NEW DIALOGUES The Place is very proud to contribute to the cultural identity of the town and in recent months we have been discovering new ways to reach out and connect with the Bedford community. In February 2018 we embarked on a project called Audience Development in the Community, funded by the Harpur Trust. The initiative is a wonderful way for The Place to collaborate with new audiences as it allows the venue to reach out and show that theatre is for everyone to share. A very successful venture of the project so far was the collaboration with the University of Bedfordshire and local schools. Last November drama, dance and music students from the University of Bedfordshire and Goldington Academy attended a matinee of Hymns for Robots at The Place. Students were introduced to technical and administrative staff, took part in a post-show discussion with the touring company, became familiar with the processes of making and producing professional theatre for regional audiences, and shadowed front of house volunteers for the evening performance. Wrap around talks and workshops were part of the collaboration and these took place off site at the university and Goldington Academy. Through this partnership The Place becomes the natural focus for class trips as it can offer quality, affordable professional theatre. We hope to expand our relationship with other schools over the coming months. Please email eh@theplacebedford.org.uk with any enquiries. 44

We also continue to support young people who are working towards an Arts Award. Call or email us for advice or to plan a visit.

RESIDENT REVIEWERS SCHEME Another initiative of the Audience Development Project that is underway is the Resident Reviewers Scheme. Last season two young people (Kezia-Rose Johnston (18) and Isabelle Brazier (9)) were chosen to be our resident reviewers and their writing was published across our social media accounts and in The Bedford Clanger. The initiative provides a public platform for young local people to express their views about the theatre that is on offer to Bedfordians as well as collecting, analysing and disseminating information about local events that bring people together. Over the next 18 months (and possibly beyond) The Place will run a competition like this at the beginning of each season, so there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. Writing workshops will also run regularly to support new writers. This is sponsored by the Frank Branston Charitable Trust. Contact eh@theplacebedford.org.uk for more information.

OVER TO YOU RETURNS FOR SUMMER 2019 Have you ever sat in the audience at one of our shows and thought ‘I’ve got a great idea for an event for this space’? July 2019 we are throwing open the doors of The Place Theatre to you and your ideas We’re not looking for work that is explicitly theatrical or artistic and there are no restrictions on what you can pitch as an idea, as long as it fits into our space. This opportunity is open to all, regardless of background, age, race, religion, gender or sexuality. For one week only, all hire of the theatre is free for people with new ideas. All we ask is that you have an idea of who your target audience will be, and a few ideas for how you might reach them. Keep your eyes peeled for more information about the scheme. 45
