barrett impresses in transition to defensive back By NATHAN KING Sports Editor

Devan Barrett’s journey across the Auburn depth chart began in April when the then-running back appeared in a team photo at head coach Gus Malzahn’s house. The photo was captioned, “Quarterbacks and wide receivers tonight.” Malzahn confirmed the move a few days later. Barrett played both receiver and running back from the spring into fall camp. But as Auburn’s freshman wideouts continued to make waves, tight end Sal Cannella showed improvement as a slot receiver and the Tigers’ stable of tailbacks impressed, Barrett was running out of room to contribute to the offense. So Malzahn gave him the Noah Igbinoghene treatment. Barrett now joins Igbinoghene as an offensive weapon turned defensive back. Speculation about the move began before Auburn and Washington kicked off in Week 1 when Barrett warmed up with the secondary. Malzahn confirmed the position change two days before the Alabama State game. “I think he’s locked in (at cornerback) right now,” Malzahn

said postgame. “I think he did some good things out there. There’s nothing like experience for him.” The sophomore out of Tampa didn’t play any meaningful snaps against the Huskies, but got his shot in the Tigers’ home-opening victory Saturday. As a defender, Barrett didn’t stand out on the stat sheet by any means, recording just one tackle. On special teams, however, he scored a 10-yard touchdown off a punt blocked by Jordyn Peters for one of Auburn’s many highlight-reel plays in its 63-9 win. But the touchdown wasn’t what impressed Barrett’s new coordinator the most. “Devan and Roger (McCreary) both played really good technique, for the most part,” Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele said Sunday night. “They won at the line of scrimmage at a pretty high percentage with their technique, which was good to see because usually, the first time you get out there in front of a crowd, you forget everything you practiced — you get a giant eraser in your head.” Steele provided some clarification for Barrett’s position

timeline and why the corner didn’t receive much work in the season opener. “He’s been there three weeks,” Steele said. “We told him the first week, we said, ‘Devan, if you make this move now, we don’t have magic dust. It’s not going to happen before we get to Washington.’ That’d be two weeks away. If that works real good, we’d go sprinkle it on everybody. “We told him, ‘Work to this point, and we’ll get you ready in certain packages.’ And he’s got a good skillset; he’s a strong guy, tough guy, very resilient. We feel like that’s a skillset that can help us.” In addition to Barrett and McCreary, Auburn received efficient performances from secondary youngsters in its first game after the departure of reserve defensive back John Broussard Jr. Peters had three tackles and a sack, and Christian Tutt racked up four tackles. Jamien Sherwood’s (4 tackles, pass breakup, interception) third-quarter pick made back-to-back weeks with standout plays for Auburn’s backup safety duo. Smoke Monday sacked Washington’s Jake Browning on a win-sealing 4th and 17 in Atlanta.

Shivers makes case for third-string RB role By NATHAN KING Sports Editor

Through two games, the talk of Auburn’s offense has been the running backs. Junior Kam Martin (29 carries, 120 yards, TD) remains the starter, but redshirt freshman JaTarvious “Boobee” Whitlow (22 carries, 150 yards, TD) has been a top performer in two very different wins for the No. 7 Tigers. Gus Malzahn said after the team’s 63-9 win over Alabama State that Whitlow’s carries, which doubled Martin’s against the Hornets, are not indicative of who will be the starter heading into SEC play. Auburn will continue to utilize a one-two punch out of the backfield. That begs the question: Who will be the No. 3 back? Third in carries — and second in yards — is true freshman Shaun “Worm” Shivers, a former four-star prospect from Hollywood, Florida. Following a onetouch outing against Washington, Shivers was Auburn’s workhorse in the second half against Alabama State, compiling 117 yards and a touchdown for a 9-yard average. “Shaun Shivers came in and gave us a lift,” Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey said Sunday night. “He gave us a spark there that I thought was really nice. He’s an electric guy.” In fall camp, Auburn’s coaches raved about Shivers’ ability to hit holes and truck defenders despite his 5-foot-7 frame. Against Alabama State, the freshman’s contributions in practice translated seamlessly to Pat Dye Field.

“He’s what he is in practice every day,” Lindsey said. “Explosive, plays extremely hard, hard to tackle, is competitive. I mean, I really think he shows all that. He brings a little spark; it’s fun to watch him play.” When theoretically determining how many backs Auburn can realistically use in conference play, Lindsey said the Tigers will likely be limited to three or four, with Shivers playing more of a “situational” role. Though he didn’t preface the listing as explicitly rooted in depth chart terms, Lindsey named Martin, Whitlow, Shivers and true freshman Asa Martin, in that order, later adding Harold Joiner, who scored Auburn’s first Wildcat touchdown of the season. In both of Auburn’s depth charts through two weeks, only Kam Martin and Whitlow are listed. “We feel like we know our guys and what they can do well,” Lindsey said. “We try to put them in the best position to do that, and we’ll continue to do that same thing.” With Auburn leading comfortably in the second half, banged-up junior Malik Miller and walk-on senior C.J. Tolbert were able to add to the 429-yard rushing onslaught. Miller carried once for a 14-yard score and Tolbert had just one yard on three touches. Asa Martin received his first touches as a Tiger, but quickly fumbled on his second carry. Of Auburn’s four lost fumbles, three came from freshmen. Lindsey knew the mistakes were inevitable. For him, simply adding carries down the depth chart only served to help effectively prepare the future of the team’s rushing attack. “We did make some mistakes, some of those young backs,” Lindsey said. “Overall, it’s always good to get some guys on the field.”

scoring out saturday’s blowout performers By SUMNER MARTIN Sports Writer

B+ A

Fresh off a 21-16 upset victory over Washington in Atlanta, No. 7 Auburn rolled over Alabama State 63-9, racking up over 500 yards of total offense inside Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday night.

QUARTERBACK

D-LINE/LINEBACKERS

Every healthy quarterback on Auburn’s roster saw playing time against Alabama State in the home opener. Backups Malik Willis, Cord Sandberg and Devin Adams all took at least one snap Saturday night. For Auburn’s starter, it was a short and simple outing. Jarrett Stidham finished 6-of-11 for 113 yards and one touchdown and rushed for eight yards and one score as well. The Tigers handled business like they should have and will now have some offensive momentum to carry into the SEC opener against LSU next weekend.

The Auburn defense, once again, demonstrated why it is one of the best units in the country. Alabama State looked overpowered and outmatched all night, whether it was the first string or the backups. The Hornets offense struggled to get anything going all night, only mustering 47 yards on the ground and failing to score a touchdown until late in the third quarter.

RUNNING BACKS

The offensive line was solid and showed improvement Saturday, but they were facing a much smaller and less imposing Hornets defensive line. We still won’t know much about this line’s progress until next week’s matchup against a talented LSU defense. But, any time you rush for over 400 yards on the ground and fail to give up any sacks, it’s a good day for the o-line.

The ground game carried Auburn to 63 points and 429 yards rushing Saturday night. This was only Alabama State, but head coach Malzahn had to be pleased with the way his backs performed. Three different running backs had touchdowns including Kam Martin, Shaun Shivers and Malik Miller. JaTarvious “Boobee” Whitlow also improved on last week’s performance, despite not scoring a touchdown, carrying the ball 14 times for 122 yards. True freshman Harold Joiner accounted for Auburn’s first Wildcat touchdown of the season, as well.

WIDE RECEIVERS

B+

The wide receiving corps is arguably the best thing on the offensive side of the ball for the Tigers at the moment. Their skill and experience was evident on Saturday. Auburn’s receivers, led by returning starters Darius Slayton, Nate Craig-Myers and Ryan Davis, racked up 273 yards through the air. Although there wasn’t much of a downfield threat, there were no key drops, and Sal Cannella was a pleasant surprise, scoring his first touchdown as a Tiger on the 10-yard fade.

A

OFFENSIVE LINE

B

SECONDARY The Tiger secondary was phenomenal all night, led by junior safety Daniel Thomas, who had two interceptions on the night, one of which was a 29yard pick-six. The Auburn defense held the Hornets’ passing attack to 158 yards, forced four turnovers and sacked the quarterback four times in a dominating performance. Alabama State managed only 10 first downs and went 2-for-15 on third down conversions.

SPECIAL TEAMS It was a complete performance for the special teams, most notably blocking two punts in the game, one of which was blocked and returned five yards for a touchdown by Devan Barrett.

The Auburn Plainsman: Auburn vs. LSU 9

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH By ZACH TANTILLO Sports Reporter

Last season, Auburn had LSU on the ropes after coming out and taking a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter. LSU would eventually come back after questionable and conservative play calling by Auburn would let them back into the game. The loss sparked a run for Auburn that included five straight wins to end the regular season and an offensive explosion where the Tigers averaged 40.4 points a game during that stretch. Now, it is LSU’s turn to travel to The Plains, and Auburn has revenge on its mind. Here is a quick look on some players to watch in this weekend’s top-12 match up:

RYAN DAVIS (AUBURN) Davis has been Stidham’s favorite target since his arrival at Auburn and with good reason. Davis has the highest catch percentage out of any of the receivers from last season, but in the loss against LSU, he only had two catches but torched the defense averaging 33 yards a catch. It is likely that LSU’s lockdown corner Greedy Williams follows Davis wherever he lines up. It will be interesting to see how Chip Lindsey and Gus Malzahn scheme around Williams to get Davis the ball in open field.

NICK BROSSETTE (LSU) The heir to LSU starter running back spot from Derrius Guice has impressed already this season. Brossette rushed for 125 yards against a No. 8 Miami team and 137 yards against Southeastern Louisiana last Saturday. Auburn handled Myles Gaskin in its first match up, not allowing him to reach the end zone or eclipse 100 yards. But Brossette is a much bigger back that has both speed and strength. The Auburn front seven versus Brossette is something to keep an eye out for on Saturday.

THE PLAYERS: JOE BURROW (LSU)

Daniel Thomas (24) hits Derrius Guice (5) in the air to keep him from the goal line in the first half. Auburn vs. LSU on Saturday, Oct. 14 in Baton Rouge, La.

DANIEL THOMAS (AUBURN) Thomas has arguably been Auburn’s defensive MVP this season with two impressive outings in Auburn’s first games. Against Washington, Thomas tied for the team lead in tackles and even set the tone early for the defense with a crushing hit on Gaskin on Washington’s first play of the game. In week two against Alabama State, Thomas recorded his second two interception game and even took one of the two to the house. The safety has a special ability to ballhawk and fly downhill to lay a hit on an opposing running back or receiver. If Thomas can take advantage of Burrow’s tendency to be inaccurate, it will be a long day for LSU’s offense.

Burrow transferred in from Ohio State and took over the starting quarterback job. He has been solid but not great for the Tigers. Through two games, Burrow has struggled with accuracy by only completing 47.7 percent of his passes, including only 45.8 against Miami. Auburn’s defensive backs play tight man coverage but have struggled against accurate quarterbacks who can fit the ball into the windows. Whether Burrow has the ability to hit those throws is something to watch out for.

DEVIN WHITE (LSU) White is the backbone of the LSU defense, not only as a vocal leader but as one who is involved in almost every play. White led the Tigers with 133 total tackles and was over double the amount of the second-place player in the tackle category. White also led the team in tackles for loss with 13.5. White has picked up right where he left of in 2017, leading the team through two games in tackles. He offers the Tigers their best run support option, and after Auburn rushed for over 400 yards against Alabama State, the matchup between the running game of Auburn and White could be an interesting one.

ew

previ

previewing auburn’s conference opener By JAKE WRIGHT Sports Writer

The battle of the SEC West’s two Tigers is a crucial early season conference showdown. No. 7 Auburn welcomes visiting No. 12 LSU to Jordan-Hare Stadium at 2:30 CST on CBS. Both teams picked up big wins over top-10 opponents to open the season and raced past FCS opponents last weekend. Auburn is looking for revenge after blowing a 20-0 lead last season in Baton Rouge. Jarrett Stidham played poorly against the Tigers a year ago as he completed only 9 of 24 passes, and he is looking for redemption. “It’s obviously a big game,” Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn said. “Any time LSU and Auburn get together, it’s going to be big, and then, of course, it’s obviously the home opener in the SEC West.” Auburn is expected to have several players who were banged up last week at full health in an attempt

to continue Auburn’s 13-game home win streak. On the offensive line, Jack Driscoll and Mike Horton are expected to be back as well as Darrell Williams and Darius Slayton. Receivers Will Hastings and Eli Stove are expected to play a larger role as well after each is recovering from surgery in the spring. The last time Auburn lost a game in Jordan-Hare was against Clemson to start the 2016 season. Auburn has beat five ranked teams at home over this streak and has beat opponents by an average of nearly 30 points. Against LSU, the home team has won 16 of 18 games since 2000. The only two road wins in the series have come when LSU won at Auburn in 2008 and 2012. Stidham seems in control of the Auburn offense thus far and has played mistake-free football through two games. He has two touchdowns with no interceptions. Auburn has not settled in on a feature running back yet as Kam Martin and JaTarvious Whitlow is the committee Auburn will use to run the ball.

Ohio State transfer Joe Burrow starts at quarterback for LSU and has completed less than 50 percent of his passes through two games. Like Stidham, Burrow has two touchdowns and no interceptions. On the ground, Nick Brossette is the next feature back in LSU’s offense as he is averaging over 130 yards rushing per game. LSU’s offensive line has struggled early in the season as they are in the bottom half of the FBS in sacks allowed. Auburn’s defensive line is one of the best in the nation as they are in the top 5 in sacks and top 20 nationally in tackles for loss. This is one matchup that Auburn could take advantage of in the game, with the Tiger front seven taking advantage of Burrow’s front line. “It’s led by Derrick Brown,” LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said. “I think he’s outstanding. Dontavius Russell, Marlon Davidson and Nick Coe, I know all of these guys. I tried to recruit them all. They’ve done a great job recruiting this front four.”

‘It’s not just one guy’ Loaded LSU defense posing challenge for Stidham, Tigers By JAKE WEESE

YOUR LOCAL RECORD SHOP IS 7 MILES EAST.

Sports Writer

When No. 7 Auburn and No. 12 LSU face off Saturday, one of the key matchups will be, as usual, the Auburn offense against the LSU defense. The Auburn offense is no stranger to tough defensive matchups this season. It has a grind-out win over a tough Washington team already under its belt, while the LSU defense mauled the Miami Hurricanes to start the season. Sophomore linebacker Devin White leads Dave Aranda’s unit, which owns a plus-5 turnover margin with two forced fumbles and three interceptions heading into Saturday’s game. And after a 20-point meltdown in Baton Rouge last season, Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham is welcoming the challenge.

“You know, I like going against really good players, whether it’s Devin White or Greedy Williams, whoever it is,” Stidham said Tuesday. “So I really look forward to the challenge. Once we kind of get into the game plan, I’ll know a little bit more of what we’re going to do. But no, I think it’s a great challenge.” Through two games, the Auburn offense is averaging 493 yards a game and 6.41 yards a play; LSU’s defense is giving up, on average, 298 yards a game and 4.11 yards a play. Coincidentally, both rank No. 32 for their respective sides of the ball in the FBS. LSU’s White, Williams, defensive back Grant Delpit and defensive lineman Rashard Lawrence all made the preseason AllSEC coaches teams. Linebacker Jacob Phillips was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week for the first week of the season, in which he had sev-

en tackles and one pick six. Head coach Gus Malzahn knows that a top linebacker like White will be looking to get after Stidham early and often. “I think [LSU] is tied for the lead in our league right now rushing the passer, and they got after both opponents really good,” Malzahn said. “It’s not just one guy; they do it by a group,” Malzahn said. “They’ll bring some linebacker pressure, bringing a little bit more pressure the first couple of games probably than they have in the past. They’ve got good cover guys in the back end that allow them to do that.” The SEC opener inside Jordan-Hare will be broadcast on CBS at 2:30 p.m. CST. Auburn beat LSU in Les Miles’ final game as head coach the last time the two played on The Plains, while the road team hasn’t won in the series since 2012.

GET TO KNOW THE

FOOTBALL STUDENT TICKETING CENTER AUB.IE/AUFSTC

The football student ticketing center was established to provide a platform where students could access all needed information regarding student football tickets. On this platform you can view your current ticket status, give to the ticket pool, request a ticket, access guest pass information, view any current penalties, and submit penalty appeals.

HOME PAGE

The 2018 season schedule is on the home page. Below the each opponent is a student’s current ticket status. No icons below the opponent name represents that the student has neither requested or been awarded a ticket. • A ticket icon shaded orange represents the student possessing a ticket for that particular game. • A ticket icon shaded gray represents a ticket requested from the pool. • A blue guest icon represents a guest pass awarded. • A gray guest icon represents a guest pass requested.

REQUEST A TICKET

This page allows students to return awarded tickets to the ticket pool. This ticket will then be redistributed to a student who requested a ticket for that particular game. Returned tickets give students without a game ticket an opportunity to attend the game. Returned tickets are not eligible for a refund. To review the terms and conditions for ticketing, please utilize the link entitled “Terms and Conditions” at the bottom of the aub.ie/aufstc site.

GUEST PASSES

Guest passes allow students to bring guests in the student section. A minimum of 250 guest passes are available each game. Only students who have a ticket may request a guest pass. Requests begin Sunday at 12 p.m. and end Thursday at 9 a.m. the week of each home game. Students who receive guest passes may purchase the pass beginning Thursday at 12 p.m. and ending Friday at 5 p.m. Students may only receive one guest ticket per game unless the Athletics Ticket Office makes an alternate announcement. To claim their guest, students must pay the guest pass fee online at www.AubTix.com using their banner number and password. If you do not have a registered account, you will be provided a pin in your email. Guest pass fees must be paid by credit card and cannot be billed to a student’s e-Bill. All guest passes must be claimed during this process. No exceptions. All unclaimed guest passes from the ticket pool will be forfeited after 5:00 p.m. on Friday the week of the game.

PENALTY POINTS

Penalty points act as an accountability system to ensure that students are either utilizing their ticket or returning it to the pool. A student can view their current penalty points by selecting the “My Penalties” page. A clear description of why a student received penalty point(s) is provided on the top of the pop up window. The penalty structure is as follows: • 0 Point Penalty: Ticket was returned before 11:59pm on the Sunday before the game. • 1 Point Penalty: Ticket was returned after Sunday at 11:59pm but before Friday at 5pm prior to the game. • 2 Point Penalty: Student failed to attend the game or failed to arrive to the game by the beginning of the second quarter Penalty points affect post season ticket distribution. The distribution is based on a penalty point-credit hour basis. Penalty points reset after every season.

APPEALS

In the event a student acquires penalty points they would like to appeal, the student can utilize the “appeals” page. On this page, a student can see that particular game to which they are eligible for an appeal. New appeals may only be submitted a maximum of six days after the penalty was initially assigned. After six days, the penalty will be finalized and will no longer be eligible for an appeal. All appeals are reviewed by the appeals committee consisting of both staff and students representatives. Students who submit appeals are encouraged to submit as much supporting information as they can provide such as clear gameday pictures, etc. The more proof a student can provide to why the point(s) were awarded unjustly, the better.
