Please briefly describe why you want to work for the Plainsman in the space provided. If you are applying to be a section editor, please include any ideas you have to improve that section? (Includes new and returning staff)

1. Attach three clips, samples of writing, and any work that pertains to the position desired. The samples do not have to be the original version. If you do not have professional clips, class assignments will be acceptable. The samples should show your ability to perform in the position desired. (Ex. – If you are applying for a photography position, your clips should show your ability to take photographs.)

3. Applications are due in The Auburn Plainsman office, Student Center Suite 1111 before Nov. 4 at 4:45 p.m. Call or email if you have trouble finding the office.

4. When you turn in this application, sign up for an interview. Sign-up sheets will be at the Plainsman front desk next to the turn-in basket. Interviews will be Nov. 710 and Nov. 11 by request. Applying for a copy position will require taking a practice exam during your interview.

Editorial positions (All positions are outlined in detail in the Auburn Plainsman handbook. This is merely serving as a quick guide for applicants. If you have more detailed questions, email editor@theplainsman.com) Managing Editor: This position needs to have past experience on The Auburn Plainsman. This editor acts as a second to the editor-in-chief and is responsible for the journalism practicum class, page preparation, sending pages and overall production of the paper. (25-40 hours per week) Copy Editor: This editor is responsible for all the copy that is published in the paper. This position must be good with detail and fact checking. The JRNL 1100 class is the foundation of this position. This section includes an associate and assistant editor too. (14-20 hours per week) News Editor: This is a section editor position that is responsible for community and current news related to Auburn, the University and the students. Must be comfortable with breaking news and have an interest in investigative reporting.

This position requires a time commitment dedicated to weekly meetings, pagination and staff coordination. This section includes an associate editor.

(14 hours per week) Campus Editor: This is a section editor position that is responsible for all activities that take place on campus. This position requires a time commitment dedicated to weekly meetings, pagination and staff coordination. This section includes an associate and assistant editor too. (14 hours per week) Intrigue Editor: This is a section editor position that is responsible for feature stories relating to Auburn, the University and the students. This position requires a time commitment dedicated to weekly meetings, pagination and staff coordination. Must have a desire to pursue creative design and story telling. This section includes an associate and assistant editor too. (14 hours per week) Photo Editor: This section editor is required to take photographs for each section of the newspaper and the website each week. Expect to take travel off-campus for some stories and spending parts of the weekend at a shoot. Photoshop skills required. Applicants MUST own their own DSLR camera.

(5-10 hours per week depending on assignment) Design Editor: This is a section editor position that is responsible for reviewing all pages for newspaper design and assisting staff members with design packages.

This position requires a time commitment dedicated to weekly meetings, pagination and staff coordination. (10-15 hours per week) Opinions Editor: This editor serves as the chair of the Editorial board and designer of the opinions page. (4 hours per week)

Graphics Editor: This position is required to create graphics for each section of the newspaper and the website each week. Some Photoshop and or Illustrator skills are required. (2 hours per week in office, possibly more outside) Multimedia editor: This editor will be responsible for assigning, editing and preparing video stories, slideshows and other media productions that need to be done for the paper and website. (10-15 hours per week) Online editor: This editor will be responsible for maintaining and creating content for the website. (7-10 hours per week) Staff writer: This position is responsible for generating content for the newspaper and website each week. Should have a flexible schedule and be available for breaking news.
