arent/teacher conferences are coming up. We know that you want to know how your children are doing; and we want to communicate well with you. From Infant Community through High School, we aim to help students move from emerging curiosity, to deepening interest, to developing talent, to emerging expertise. The students’ work makes this happen; work that begins from curiosity and interest, and necessarily involves initiative, activity, experimentation, repetition, creativity, errors, failures, successes, attention to quality, and ongoing improvement. In his book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, Dan Pink identifies the three most important elements for motivating people, both adults and children: autonomy, mastery and purpose. “All kids start out as curious (and) continued on page 2
