Baltimore City’s First Historic Event Induction of First Female President For Baltimore Branch in 20 Plus Years

Black History Feature Story

The Baltimore Branch NAACP was founded and established in 1912. With the first President being Dr. Francis N. Cardoza. As Black Leaders throughout the city became involved with the plight of African Americans numerous community focused organizations evolved which led to more female participation. Following the founding of W.E.B. DuBois’ organization, The Niagara Movement, a group of women founded the DuBois Circle, devoted to the ongoing study of issues affecting AfricanAmericans thereby opening the door to allow more women to become involved in issues that ultimately affect our community. In 1924 Lillian Lottier became the first female president of the Baltimore Branch NAACP. While she only served one term as President, the impact was tremendous. The 2nd female President was Truly Hatchet who served from 1928-1929 paving the way for the 3rd female, Lillie May Jackson, elected in 1935; who under her leadership made Baltimore City the second largest branch in the nation in 1947. When the 4th female President, Enolia P. McMillan took the helm she put Baltimore City on the map due to the instrumental role she played in working with Dr. Benjamin Hooks in persuading the NAACP to move the National Headquarters from New York City to Baltimore. Now, some 20 plus years later we look to Tessa Hill-Aston, the 5th female President, to make her mark on Baltimore City and become the next crusader for equality and force of action in our community.

Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo

Return…Revive…and Grow! They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine. ~Hosea 14:7 Many of God’s people have been cut off from prosperity and are struggling with lack and limitation. Limited funds and a lack of resources have left many with no alternatives and few options. They are faced with foreclosure, unemployment and the shame of once having much but now being left with little. They don’t have what they used to have. They can’t do what they used to do. They can’t go where they used to go. They are not complaining or questioning God, but it is a difficult place to be and they recognize it. They are in holes they can’t dig themselves out of and in ruts they can’t move from. It is a frustrating, devastating season, but it is coming to an end. To you, God speaks a Word from Hosea. You dwell under his shadow and shall return, revive and grow. This is your growing season. You will see your spirits revived, your fortunes return, and your businesses grow. Are you facing a trial that threatens to crush your soul? Stay close to God. Under His shadow you shall return, revive and grow. Are you praying for someone, some situation or something? Under His shadow it shall return, revive and grow. God is faithful and will turn around your life, your endeavors, and your finances. Hold on. Don’t give up. Your strength shall return. Remain prayerful. Remain hopeful. Believe. Every morning expect change. Wake each morning seeing the change you desire. Continue to work hard. Don’t give up. Don’t lose hope. Keep moving in the direction of your dreams. Visualize the change you need and keep moving and working towards it. Be affirmative in praying: God I thank you that (whoever, whatever) dwells under

your shadow and shall return, revive as the corn and grow like the vine. What you are praying for shall return, revive and grow. Expect change. Thank God!

Committed To Keeping Health Care In The Community Health Information You Can Use “Pharmacists don’t just fill prescriptions, we’re here to improve medication use and patient care. One important area is the proper use of vitamins. Vitamins are an important part of staying healthy, but many people don’t know what to take or how they will affect you. Below are a few tips that may answer some questions for you.” Wyndy Webb-Doanes, Director of Pharmacy Services, Total Health Care, Inc.

Health & Wholeness

For women, a lack of calcium in your diet can worsen symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Women with a high intake of calcium, through diet or supplements, suffer less from PMS. A calcium deficiency can trigger an elevation of female hormones in an effort to stabilize hormone imbalance, resulting in the worsening of PMS symptoms. Did you know that men with zinc shortages can experience fertility problems? The health of a man’s prostate gland is linked to zinc levels; a severe zinc deficiency can affect testosterone levels and possibly lead to impotence. Did you know the body more efficiently absorbs and uses calcium from food than from supplements? Although supplements will do in a pinch, it’s better to get your daily dose of calcium through your diet. Try a serving of dairy, like cheese, yogurt or milk, or whitebait fish. What is the best way to take my daily multivitamin? Often taking one whole tablet per day results in your body not being able to absorb all of the nutrients contained in that one tablet at one time. Your body can only absorb a certain amount and the rest is excreted in your urine and feces. The best way to take a multivitamin is by taking half your multivitamin in the morning and half in the evening, you’re guaranteeing that your body can absorb all the nutrients it can. Did you know that Whole Grain cereal offers almost all 8 B vitamins and is a great source of fiber? Whole grain cereals are loaded with B vitamins. Add a splash of low-fat organic milk and boost your vitamin B, D and calcium intake – good morning What vitamin group can help you lose weight, increase your metabolism, help prevent heart disease and cancer, and promote healthy muscle and nerve function? The 8 members of the vitamin B family can do it! Each and every B vitamin is essential to your health and wellbeing.
