Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance Rev. Dr. Alvin Gwynn, Sr., President
PRESS STATEMENT
Baltimore a City in the State of Maryland a City that was once called a “Charm City, and a State that was once The Land of Pleasant Living.” Police Officer’s and Citizens were once able to walk the streets of our City without fear and reservation. They knew each other by name and worked together collectively in fighting crime. Today there hangs a dark cloud over our beloved City. Instead of ethnically diverse striving communities that existed peacefully with each other our City is now divided into “Crime Zones.” What is a High Crime Area and a Low Crime Area”? No Human Being should be defined by the Area or Environment in which they live. It makes no difference if a person lives in a housing project or Gated Community, they should be treated and Respected Equally under the Law. There is no difference between a murder uptown and a murder downtown. To place a group of people under special surveillance and scrutiny based upon where they lived is unreasonable, unfair and discriminator. First, we are here today because our Police Department is in disarray. We no longer can distinguish who is in charge of the Police Department day to day operations. When an incident such of the one that occurred a few days ago with Mr. Freddie Gray and his untimely and unnecessary death, it seems that no one in the Police Department can Explain What Happen!! Time and Time Again This Commissioner Has Resulted to Asking Outside Agency to come in and explain what is Happening or Has Happened with Officers under His Command and Charge. Secondly, there is the
unnecessary movement to militarize our Police Department. We live in a Great City and Not A Combat Zone. The Job of the Police is to “Protect And To Serve” Not To “Seek and Destroy.” TARGETING INDIVIDUALS BASED UPON RACIAL PROFILING, ILLEGAL STOP AND FISK TO ARREST SOMEONE FOR LOOKING AT A POLICE IN A STRANGE WAYS. IS TO RETURN TO THE DAYS OF JIM CROW AND RACIAL UNEQUALITY. Great efforts have been made by our Senators and Congressman to correct many of the Bad Law Enforcement Behavior and Practices. They Have Introduced Bills to Create A Better Equal and Fair Life for Everyone. Thirdly, under this Commissioner there is A Distinct Absence of Community Policing. Extremely long on Talk but Short on Action and Implementation. As a Result of The Many Short Falls OF THIS POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE LACK OF VIABLE LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES, WE THE MINISTER’S ALLIANCE ARE DEMANDING THAT POLICE COMMISSIONER ANTHONY BATTS TENDER HIS RESIGNATION IMMEDIATELY AND A ACTING COMMISSIONER BE APPOINTED UNTIL A PERMANENT REPLACEMENT IS CHOSEN. We were also in Shock and Dismay to Hear, The Current Head of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Refer to Peaceful and Orderly Protester’s AS “A LYNCH MOB” WE DEMAND FROM HIM A WRITTEN AND PUBLIC APOLOGY

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF MARYLAND
8
It all began many, many years ago when numerous efforts towards establishing a Baptist Church for Colored People seemed an impossibility. Since around 1800, Blacks had prayed and struggled, hoping that laws and customs would change so that their dreams of freedom would become a reality. Slavery continued to prevail and public opinion was unfavorable to their separate organization. However, many Blacks were members of the First (White) Church. Now, “God moves in Mysterious ways, His wonders to perform”, and so in His great wisdom ‘twas in the midst of this era that the inevitable happened. William Crane, one of the greatest men that ever lived in Maryland, a White leather merchant from Virginia, had long been interested in missionary work among Negroes. He encouraged his dear friend, Moses C. Clayton, to come to Baltimore to work as a missionary among the Black Baptists. Hence, in the year 1834, Moses C. Clayton came to Baltimore to begin his first missionary work. Noting that there was no place of worship where his people could come together in adoration and praise of His Holy Name, he used the parlor of his Mullikin Street home. Here, a Sunday School was organized. ln attendance were three children, two of whom were his own. ‘Twas late in the summer when he began. Soon thereafter, Mr. Clayton continued his Sunday School efforts in a building given to him rent free by its owner, Mr. Sterling. Mr. Clayton had learned to read, write, and speak fluently, thus he began his teaching and preaching at once. The White Baptist Clergy ordained Mr. Clayton in 1835. 0n February 20, 1836, The Sunday School was organized into “The First Colored Peoples’ Church (of Maryland) in Baltimore City” with the Reverend Moses C. Clayton as pastor. Among those who assisted in the ordination and organization were Reverend S. P. Hill of The First Church, John Healey of the Second Church and the Reverend G. Adams of the Calvert Street Church, which was later called the Hill Street Church. 0n February 20, 1837, the church applied for a Charter of lncorporation, which was recorded in the Court House of Baltimore on March

20,1837. ln March of 1841, it was admitted to the Maryland Baptist Union Association. The Association provided much counseling and guidance to the new church as it progressed. They soon built a small edifice on Lewis Street between Orleans and Mulligan Streets which they shortly outgrew. ln 1849, Reverend Clayton resigned at the age of 66. The Reverend John Carey was called. Realizing economic difficulties, the Lewis Street edifice was sold for debts incurred. lnternal difficulties resulting from this, divided the church and the Reverend Carey left in 1852 with about twenty-six members and formed the Union Baptist Church. This action led the church to recall Reverend Clayton, who remained until his death on April 3,1861 at the age of 78. His remains were buried in the Laurel Cemetery. A succession of ministers served from 1861 to 1865. They wereReverends John Whyne, Thomas Rheams and James Underdue. ln 1865, Reverend Lewis Hicks became pastor. With the aid of Rev. John Berg, Reverend Hicks succeeded in collecting enough money to build a church. ln 1880 under the leadership of Rev. JC Allen and through the aid of the Church Expansion Society, the new church was completed at a cost of $16,500. 0n the last Sunday in January in 1881, the congregation left the old building at Thompson and Young Streets to occupy their new church. The Mother Church thus began to take its place as a leader among the Baptists. Many ministers have brought profitable experiences and playedprominent parts in continued progress of The First Baptist Church. They have been: Reverends Albert Josiah Green, 1920-1924; William H. Young, 19281935; Matthews T. Waters, 1935-1939; Andrew D. Nance, 1939-1942; Vernion T. Williams, 1943-1962; Gus Roman, 1963-1967; Walter Parish, 1967-1969; Baxter L. Matthews, 1970-1972 (lnterim Pastor and Pastor Emeritus of Union Baptist Church); Leroy Fitts, 19722009 (Pastor Emeritus); Theodore Anthony, 2009-2013 (lnterim Pastor). 0n December 2, 2012 Pastor Craig Harcum answered the call to become Senior Pastor. We transitioned into 2013 Celebrating Moving Forward and during 2016 we will pause to commemorate our founding.

Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo
Oil On Water
Seek those things which are above. Colossians 3:1 This season you are learning how to move through life, relationships, circumstances, and environments without letting them stop you, discourage you, or distract you. You will face situations that demand understanding, explanation, clarification, or some type of communication from you. You will feel obligated to stop, pay attention, and respond to everything and everybody. You will feel like you have to defend, justify, or rectify every situation, every comment, every action, and every deed when all you have to do is let them go and keep moving. You are learning how to live so that you can move over any obstacle and keep on going. Don’t get bogged down in mundane tasks, petty arguments, random remarks, and other people’s drama. Stay above them all and keep moving. You may not be able to get past everything or ignore everybody. You may not be able to get around some circumstances or get through some turmoil. But you can learn to step over them, rise above them, and keep going. Be like oil that floats on water. The oil sits on the water and does not sink into or merge with the water. The oil does not become one with the water. The oil does not join the water. The oil stays on top. Stay above the petty, insignificant things of life and people. Don’t get bogged down in it. Stay above it. Don’t sink down in it. Don’t join in it. Don’t get stuck in any of it. Keep moving. God has someplace for you to go. And ultimately, God has someone for you to become. You are learning the value of the oil. It stays on top. Be like the oil. Power Magazine n February 2016

THE CHURCH TEA
THE SHEPHERD’S HEART
So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her. Genesis 29:20 NIV
Valentine’s Day is coming soon and love is in the air. I was recently asked for my opinion on pastoral dating. I am no expert but I have some interesting and albeit humorous points of view on the subject. First of all, if you want to date a single pastor and win the shepherd’s heart… wearing provocative outfits, catching the spirit and sitting in the front row is not a good idea. It distracts from the message and makes you look more secular than spiritual. So if the amour bearers block your path at the end of service, just take the hint and relegate yourself to the “friend zone”. Good pastors have anointed charismatic personalities and people love that characteristic. They have a Christ-like love for all their members, so please discourage yourself from wanting more or misinterpreting kindness as signals or advances. Now, if you are actually dating clergy, take note – there is a certain amount of protocol associated with dating a member of the ministry. For starters, don’t assume the position of the First Lady (or Man) without the proper title. Secondly, refrain from overzealous public displays of affection. This type of attention is unwarranted, and the pastor is not obligated to acknowledge you as his/her significant other while dating. Also, testifying about your relationship with a pastor must be avoided. Don’t start arguments before a service either. And forget being in
every church organization to keep track on him or her – that is a pitfall to jealousy and only reduces your confidence. Remember Romans 12:9-10 reminds us, “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.” So, above all never shun other members because of your favor with the pastor. According to my emails, this is one reason why members leave a congregation. Lastly, be sure to listen to me & Rev. Wingo on WOLB 1010AM Fridays from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. as we discuss community issues and events in the faith based communities.
