Think On These Things By Juanita G. Wingo
Everything Matters
They that wait upon the Lord…shall walk. Isaiah 40:31 There is a reason Jesus walked everywhere. He did not jog, power walk, sprint, or run. He walked. The pace was slower than an automobile’s speed. The pace was slower than a horse’s speed. Jesus kept a slow pace. We can learn pace from Jesus. Everything modern is tempered by pace. People expect fast moving, high speed connections, activities, mechanisms, and devices. The faster the better is our motto. We talk fast; our language has adopted the swift abbreviated pace of texting, and our thinking skips over logic and moves too swiftly to conclusions. Our normal conversations are littered with interruptions because rarely do we take the time to really listen. It becomes more important for us to get our point across quickly. We demand responses seconds after we make our requests. We expect businesses to grow at rapid paces, investments to multiply at accelerated rates, and promotions to come after a short period of time. We do not like to wait. Our egos drive us to push ourselves and others at impossible, unrealistic speeds. We want to move fast, faster, fastest and we neglect the experiences God wants us to learn from. We ignore the warning signs he sets before us because we are moving too fast. We don’t pay attention to the everyday lessons and the everyday incidents and the everyday circumstances that God, like a symphony conductor, orchestrates making all the parts of us and our existence come together, move together, and work together according to his plan. Like a symphony where every chord counts and every instrument has a part to play and each note has a beat to contribute, everything in us, around us, and with us matters. I learned how to walk with God from driving a big 1500 Chevy conversion van. The van was so long, I couldn’t look out the back windows to see what was behind me or coming up on me or going around me. I couldn’t use my rear view mirror. I had to learn how to use my side view mirrors. I couldn’t look behind me. I had to look beside me. I drove that van for 14 years and that experience taught me to look side to side. And then God told me what he was doing. He was teaching me to walk beside him. He let me know that 14 year experience driving that big van mattered. Everything is a part of God’s grand plan for us. God wants us to learn pace from Jesus. God wants us to walk with him. Not run ahead of him or move around him. Stop running and walk with God. Take note, observe and watch. Learn from everything because everything matters. Everything we experience matters. Everything that happens to us matters. Everything we do matters. Everything matters.

THE CHURCH TEA
BEHIND THE SCENES
That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus. Philemon 1:6 Like millions of people around the world, I was recently blind-sided by the death of yet another cultural icon. While he may be mostly remembered for musical genius, behind the scenes, The Artist Formerly Known as Prince was deeply a man of faith and community. Prince Rogers Nelson was raised a Seventhday Adventist. Like many of us, Prince had his bout with riotous living (which as a celebrity was unduly publicized). Still, the Bible says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Prince’s change came in 2001 when he converted to Jehovah’s Witness. As a devout Christian, he even admitted to knocking on random doors to hand out Watchtower magazine and preach his faith. Before his death Prince was not ashamed or afraid to show his faith and preach the virtues of a moral life. “I just live according to this,” Prince said referring to the Bible. Taking a stand against social inequalities, poverty, and the hypocrisy of the political establishment, Prince spoke out nationally and locally. This was evident to me when Prince decided to perform a benefit concert last year in Baltimore. I had no tickets for the event when I arrived, but managed to score some pretty decent seats. Thousands of others helped fill the Royal Farms Arena in “gray”. Prince had requested that people wear the color “gray” at this “Rally 4 Peace” in honor of Freddy Gray and “in tribute to all those recently lost in the violence.” On stage, Prince told the young people of Maryland that “the system was broken and it would be up to them to fix it”. When the
concert was over, he talked to the crowd and said, “When I come back to Baltimore, I want to be picked up by a limo service you own. I wanna stay in a hotel you own.” It was clear to me that Prince sincerely wanted minorities to have economic empowerment by owning and operating businesses. Like Prince’s life story, that concert showed our city that we really do have the last word. In fact, the closing song was an impromptu repetitive verse of him singing, “BALTIMORE, BALTIMORE, BALTIMORE.” So, as we celebrate the one year anniversary of the passing of Freddie Gray, we can now also celebrate the passing of a modern day Prince. Let us pray for their souls … that they may rest in peace. Until next time be sure to listen to me and Rev. Wingo on WOLB 1010AM Friday’s from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. as we discuss community issues and events in the faith based communities. Email me: annwilliams@ramovers.com.
