Think On These Things By Grace J. Wingo
Life As It Is
I am come that they might have life. John 10:10 Life is boring. The sooner we accept this reality the easier it will be to live each day to the fullest. We get into trouble trying to make life more than it is. We want constant excitement, variety, stimulation. We keep trying to make our days different from the last one. We struggle against routine. Today must be bigger, better, more accomplished, more filled than yesterday. We race through the week just to find that our weekends have more routines. But embracing the same-ness of life’s daily routines is what enables us to appreciate the uniqueness of the ordinary and really see how beautiful each moment can be. God created the earth in seven days and then he stopped. He didn’t keep creating something new and doing something different every day after he had finished. But he does want us to look at what he did and appreciate it: the colors, the distinctions, the differences, the opportunities, the changes, the temperatures, the movements that present themselves to us every moment.
See the variations in life – the same life we wake up to every day.
God finished creation and then gave us life. Life as an experience may not change. You may face the same reality every day – day in and day out. No changes, no fluctuations, no differences, just the monochromatic color of the ordinary. But don’t grow restless with the process of the ordinary. Within your life is the life of God – always alive, always evolving, always presenting chances to change, live again, get it right. Don’t look without for excitement in life. Look within. The life of God within you will show you new vistas opening up, new challenges to explore, new tasks to accomplish, new ways of seeing people, places and things, new arenas to enter. THE CHURCH TEA
DEVASTATING DISEASE
“Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;" Psalms 103:3
My heart is always heavy for families dealing with substance abuse issues. Although I have no formal training concerning drug addiction, as the sister of an addict I want to give comfort and support to all the families affected by this chronic devastating disease. People mistakenly think that those who use drugs lack moral principles or willpower and that they could stop their drug use simply by choosing to. The initial decision to take drugs is voluntary for most people. However, drugs change the brain in ways that make quitting hard, even for those who want to. Drugs affect the brain's "reward circuit" by flooding it with the chemical messenger dopamine. This reward system controls the body's ability to feel pleasure and motivates a person to taking the drug. According to the Baltimore Department of Health’s estimates, there are 60,000 drug addicts among us. It is not surprising then that so many Baltimore churches have ministries for the addicted. Still, it seems few have ministries dedicated to their families and enablers. By definition, an enabler gives (someone or something) the authority or means to do something. This sounds positive, but in the case of an addict, it is not. For the addict, enabling attempts to remove the natural consequences of his or her behavior which in effect delays the deliverance, avoids the answer and prolongs the problem. Enablers often feel compelled to solve other people’s problems and provide for their needs. They try to placate abusers by giving them what they want. These enablers just want to remain in a comfort zone of the drug abuser. The idea is that efforts to confront or set boundaries for unacceptable behavior often result in an immediate escalation of conflict. So, it is easier just to go along to get along. And as enablers give in and give what the addicts want or need, the victims of abuse use the enablers’ concern to continue their behavior. Often, enablers take up being responsible for the addict’s behavior (a self-fulfilling prophecy). They love the addict and they think they are simply helping them, but the reality is that they are not. The addict eats up the attention and loving-kindness and continues on living as an addict. “You” pretend everything is wonderful. “You” choose to believe that all is well when in reality all is not. “You” see signs of addiction, but you let it go never trusting your gut instinct.
For me, it has been a draining experience. I continue to look for any glimmer of hope for recovery. I pray daily for the deliverance of addiction. Then there is the shame, the denial and finally the acceptance of circumstances beyond my control. I too had found myself in the uncomfortable position as an “enabler”. And even when I made the decision to cease funding a drug addict, I still found myself funding the people who were left devastated by their addiction, i.e., children and other unspoken victims of drug abuse. Bottom-line, until we come to understand the disease of addiction, hurting families and enablers will remain the biggest sideeffect. Confronting this battle head on can be our salvation. I was given this prayer from a gentleman who overcame his addiction after 20 years and was 7 years clean. “Father, thank you for the gift of today. I choose to focus on the blessings of each moment instead of allowing the little things to steal my joy. Keep me close to you always as I submit every area of my heart and mind to you. In Jesus' name, Amen.” Here are the numbers for some centers located in Maryland helpful with addiction: Turker House 410-233-0684, Mountain Manor 410-233-1400 and lastly, but not least Penn North Recovery 410-728-2080. Whoever you call, remember to call on God first! And never give up on love even when you must love from a distance. As always, To God Be The Glory as we lift each other up in hard times. Tune in to the Power Magazine radio show on WBOL 1010 AM, Fridays from 12-1:00 p.m., Baltimore’s #1 Christian radio show & email me at annwilliams@ramovers.com.
