Think On These Things By Reverend Juanita G. Wingo
God’s Pathways Neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.~ Isaiah 55:8 If it is not a person’s path to walk, you cannot put him on it. We want so much to perfect people’s lives. We want to give them an easy road. We want to give them their heart’s desires. We want to make all of their dreams come true. We want to make all the crooked things straight and all the rough places smooth. We want to fill all their valleys and bring low all their mountains. We don’t want them to suffer. We want to rescue them from all danger. We want to make their lives better. We don’t want to see them struggle. We don’t want to see them stretched beyond their endurance. If we had our way, people’s lives would be wonderful! But God’s ways with man are not our ways. We can’t see what they need. We can’t see what God can see. God knows how to handle us to make us what we are to be. He knows the way we should walk. God knows the path we should take. If God has not designated a path for someone, we cannot put him on it. We may want perfect health for our loved ones, but infirmity might be on that person’s path. We may want financial security for our loved ones, but poverty’s discipline might meet that person on the path. We may want love, comfort, peace and joy for someone, but that person may be called to walk a path of loneliness and rejection. Failure can produce extraordinary insight and strength. And trouble can turn a person’s life around. We don’t know how God is preparing people for the life they are meant to live. Stretching may seem like torture to us, but that is how great capacity is developed. Broad shoulders come from carrying heavy loads. And hearts that hurt come to know the greatness of love. Leave people alone. Stop giving them money. Stop trying to pull them out of holes they fall into. Stop holding their hands. Let God work. He will lead them along their designated path, and he will take care of them. Trust God’s ways. His ways are higher. Power Magazine n NOVEMBER 2014

God Created Man for Thanksgiving, Not Black Thursday
by Samuel Williams, Jr.
RIVERDALE, MARYLAND — 1 Thessalonians 5: 18 says “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” As Christians prepare for the Thanksgiving holiday, it is important to remember one critical fact: God created humanity for thanksgiving and gratitude. People of faith must take the lead in remembering we as a people exist to appreciate God. He created humans to honor Him by giving Him thanks. Appreciating both who God is and His actions for us — in creating us and sustaining our lives — is fundamental to proper human life in God’s created world. But as our country goes into the 21st century, Thanksgiving, a holiday traditionally celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, has become a fiscal launching pad for “Black Friday.” Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving
and is often regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. In recent years, most major retailers, who originally opened extremely early on the morning of Black Friday, and who offer promotional sales to kick off the holiday shopping season, have started their sales as early as Thanksgiving evening. There lies the rub. Black Friday has now become “Black Thursday.” There are two negatives created by the retailers greed to start Black Friday on Thanksgiving Day: a.) Families who used to sit together after the meal and reflect on how God had blessed their family become disjointed as family members disrupt the family bonding dynamic to go to retail stores in hopes of getting a great deal for Christmas gifts; and b.) Retail store workers are forced to leave their families to provide services for Black Thursday shoppers, whether they want to or not.

On November 26, 2012, in a news report published by international news agency Rueters, it was revealed that United States (US) shoppers spent $59.1 billion in retail stores during the Black Friday weekend. And despite the massive potential for huge earnings, for the 2014 Thanksgiving holiday, the following major retailers have decided not to open on Thanksgiving Day: American Girl, BJ’s, Wholesale Club, Burlington, Costco, Crate and Barrel, Homegoods, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Marshalls, Nordstrom, Pier 1 Imports, Sierra Trading Post and TJ Maxx. It is their belief that families as well as their employees should be together on the day of thanks. Rev. Rodney A. Barnes, senior pastor at Gethsemane A.M.E Church in Landover, Maryland applauds the decisions of retailers not to open on Thanksgiving Day and remembers the era where the holiday had true symbolic meaning. “The Bible in Psalm 50:14 says; ‘Offer to God thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High’. As a child I remember gathering with family in South
Hampton County, Virginia on the farm to celebrate Thanksgiving,” Rev. Barnes said. “The focus was on God and the blessing he had given us. There was no such thing as ‘Black Friday’. Stores were closed everywhere, even gas stations closed early.” According to Rev. Barnes, retail stores have hampered the one holiday that families can gather and give thanks to the Lord. “The commercialization of Thanksgiving has removed all of the central theme of thanksgiving from the day,” Rev. Barnes said. “I personally applaud those companies who have taken a stand and said they will not open up on Thanksgiving Day to honor the tradition of giving thanks. Thanksgiving is a day of giving thanks to God for all he has done for us, it is not a day to shop and find the best deals in town.” On Thanksgiving Day, people of faith throughout the world should pause and remember God’s many blessing in their lives and share that gratitude with their families in activities at home. n

The Church Tea
Nothing but the blood of Jesus will save us In this year 2014, it seems almost unbelievable that we are facing a possible Ebola epidemic… and even more amazing how it is being handled. Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey, who is widely considered to be one of the top Republican contenders for the 2016 presidential race, was recently ostracized for placing nurse Kaci Hickox in quarantine when she returned to the USA after treating infected patients in West Africa. However, she has opted to violate the quarantine request, choosing instead to legally challenge the quarantine.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has disseminated numerous amounts of information about this disease, yet some of the publications seem to be conflicted. As an untrained observer of this highly infectious disease, my primary concern is public safety. Technical discussions about whether it can be spread by droplets or transmitted airborne – no matter how unsettling – must be presented and shared with the public. Fortunately, there have been bright sides in this tragedy. For instance, while Dr. Kent Brantly, the American who treated patients
in Africa with Ebola, does not know exactly how he contracted the disease, after treatment his blood has generated the antibodies needed to save the lives of others. What a blessing!
In a perfect world anyone exposed to Ebola would voluntarily go into a 21-day quarantine and monetary set-aside funds could be created in order to sustain health care workers financially when they return to the United States and are placed under quarantine. Nevertheless, as Christians, if we do not offer and support humanitarian assistance, such as trained health care workers to treat the victims in West Africa, it’s almost guaranteed that the epidemic will spread. Still, one thing is for certain, “Nothing but the blood of Jesus will save us.” Until next time, To God be the Glory! Be sure to listen to me and Rev. William Wingo on WOLB Friday’s from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
