SOLVING THE PUZZLE

MIDDLE SCHOOL BUILDS COMMUNITY THROUGH STRATEGY, COLLABORATION, AND WALL CLIMBING [P. 14] The Kevin Pearson Conference Room | P. 12 Is This The Year For Girls’ Basketball? | P. 26

“I am always impressed by our students’ sportsmanship in both victory and defeat.

Dear Friends of Prairie,

Looking back on my tenth year, I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this school. I love our commitment to collaboration, hard work, creative and critical thinking, and the development of courageous and outstanding communicators — all within our pluralistic community that emphasizes integrity and honor.

Prairie thrives because of families, teachers, advisors, and coaches for whom “good” is not good enough. Our collective pursuit of excellence resulted in another exceptional year, parts of which you will read about in the coming pages.

We have also faced low points this year and I am proud of how we persevere, give grace, and move forward.

Great schools are in many ways countercultural. While societal stressors attempt to divide us, Prairie focuses on commonalities and building shared experiences that involve our different cultures, religions, and traditions. Our students are eager to learn – the Upper School Commons is always full fifteen minutes before school starts – and diligent in their desire to improve, persisting even when a note is missed, a line is forgotten, or a game is lost. I am always impressed by our students’ sportsmanship in both victory and defeat.

No matter what awaits our graduates in the years ahead, we know they will be prepared — just like our 2,000+ alumni thriving in countless fields all across the globe.

As we approach our 60th birthday, I want to thank you for strengthening our community through your support. Philanthropic gifts cover almost thirty percent of our budget and the Prairie experience would not be possible without your generosity.

From our students and faculty, to our parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends, it is the people who make Prairie, Prairie. Thank you for believing in our mission. We are truly better together.

Sincerely,

Le Aders H i P

“The important role you play in making Prairie a creative, collaborative environment where students strive to make our world better cannot be overstated.”

Dear Friends:

I am honored to be a part of such an incredible and important organization that is dedicated to the health and well-being of our children. Prairie continues to thrive as an independent, college preparatory school committed to helping students become their best selves.

In this edition of the Report of Giving, you’ll read all about opportunities that were seized and capitalized on throughout this past year – the celebration of different cultures, building community, and discovering new talents, just to name a few.

The important role you play in this process – and in making Prairie a creative, collaborative environment where students strive to make our world better – cannot be overstated.

In short, your generosity is what makes the opportunities of Prairie possible.

I am deeply appreciative of your support. Here’s to another year of challenging each other, working together, and seizing opportunities whenever they come our way.

Sincerely,

F or t H e LoVe oF e ACH ot H er ( And tre Ats )

MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL CELEBRATES THE DIVERSITY OF OUR COMMUNITY’S CULTURES

Legendary British novelist Virginia Woolf once said, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.”

We agree with the writer’s assessment. We also find that her phrase provides a nice, multifaceted window into why the annual Multicultural Festival is such an important part of Prairie’s culture.

Yes, the paczki (Polish doughnuts) and the empadas (stuffed Brazilian dough) and the pepparkakor (Swedish ginger cookies) are delicious, but this day – one of the most anticipated every year – is about more than just delicious food. It’s an opportunity to come together, a day for learning what’s important to those important to us.

Last spring, 92 student and parent hosts representing 34 countries set up shop in the Student Research Center. They shared customs and traditions and desserts. It was a day of great thought, great food, and loving each other well. Virginia Woolf would have been proud.

THIRD GRADE JAPAN DAY

The kimono can teach us a lesson. Upon first glance, this traditional Japanese garment seems pretty straightforward – wide collar and drooping sleeves, a hem that falls at the ankles. Every kimono wraps around the body, the left side typically sitting over the right. The garment is secured with a sash –the obi – tied at the back.

The more you learn about the kimono, though, you understand that it is a garment of great nuance and complexity, as unique as the individual who wears it. Male kimonos are more subdued in pattern and color, while women wear vibrant designs that vary depending on their stage of their life.

Every year, third grade students at Prairie celebrate Japan Day. Similar to the Multicultural Festival, the annual Diwali Celebration, and numerous other opportunities made available to students, it’s a chance to explore another culture’s food, customs, and traditions.

On Japan Day, students are encouraged to wear kimonos, and inevitably, the styles selected vary widely in pattern and color. Alike but different. Collaboration while discovering individuality. These are important life lessons Prairie students learn again and again.

And sometimes the vehicle for such wisdom comes in the draping, flowery shape of a kimono.

It’s known as stealing the scene, and it happens when an actor, often one in a supporting role, is so dynamic the audience has no choice but to watch their every move.

In the Upper School Players’ production of Mean Girls this past May, Ishir Mehra ’26 was one such scene-stealer.

Mehra starred as Kevin G., the quick-witted, wise-cracking captain of The Mathletes. Whether he was rapping, dancing, or jumping on a couch, Mehra played the character — one written to be as endearing and confident as he is socially awkward – to perfection. Kevin G. is the kind of role that can be easy for an audience to overlook. However, Mehra, whose work earned him a 2024 Jerry Award, was the opposite, providing a performance which proved unforgettable.

RILEY SAENIM ’26 CAPTURES STATE “POETRY OUT LOUD” TITLE NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE

Here’s a fun experiment the next time you find yourself in conversation with a teenager: ask for a list of their top luxury items and see what they say.

Odds are the transcendent works of Dickinson or Keats probably won’t make the cut.

For Riley Saenim ’26, however, the rich language of poetry has opened her eyes to the world while helping shape her Prairie experience.

Saenim is the state of Wisconsin’s back-to-back Poetry Out Loud champion, a national program encouraging the study and dynamic recitation of poetry by students nationwide. Saenim was introduced to poetry, and fell in love with recitation, in freshman English thanks to the Poetry Out Loud unit incorporated by Matt Peterson, English Department Chair.

“I loved every aspect of it,” Saenim told the Racine Journal Times. “The analysis and taking apart the poem in order to put it back together in a way that the audience would understand.”

At the State competition, held in Madison last April, Saenim performed “Vixen” by WS Merwin, “Thoughtless Cruelty” by Charles Lamb, and “Among Women” by Marie Ponsot.

The reason she selected “Vixen”? Because she liked its “luxurious language.”

By winning the Wisconsin competition, Saenim advanced to the National Poetry Out Loud Finals in Washington D.C.

If tradition holds, we look forward to seeing her back there again next year.

HONORING AN ICON

THE KEVIN PEARSON CONFERENCE ROOM IS A PLACE FOR LEARNING, LAUGHTER, AND COMPANIONSHIP

Whether it was spinning on the potter’s wheel, painting a landscape, blowing glass, or building a warm Middle School environment, Kevin Pearson was always at home when creating.

Last December, the late Prairie educator was honored during the dedication of a bright and brilliant new addition to campus – The Kevin Pearson Conference Room.

Family, friends, and former colleagues attended the special celebration honoring the man who not only created great art, but also great friendships.

“When I stepped in to fill his very big shoes as Head of Middle School, we would talk every day,” says Bonnie Benes, former Head of Middle School. “He would say, ‘What did you learn, what was the challenge, what was the best part of the day, and – the most important question – did you do best by the students.’ ”

Some things just go together. The relationship between the Pearsons and Prairie dates back to 1979 and continues to this day. Kevin and Chris both enjoyed remarkable careers as Prairie educators. Kevin taught at Prairie from 1979-2014, and Chris from 1988-2014. Today, their son Tristan ’99 teaches fifth grade, and their grandchildren, Garrett ’24, Karsten ’27, Sora ’26, and Astrid ’28 are all current students.

NO MOUNTAIN (OR ROPE WALL) TOO HIGH

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS BEGIN THE YEAR BY FOCUSING ON COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION, AND COOPERATION

Adolescence is tricky. Middle School in particular. Even for those lucky individuals that loved their teenage years – there are a few of us out there – 6th, 7th, and 8th grade involved plenty of awkwardness and uncertainty.

Or, to put it another, more metaphoric way, Middle School has obstacles. Lots of them. That’s why at Prairie, the Middle School faculty makes a conscientious effort to arm students with tools and experiences to overcome these challenges.

Take Grit ‘N Wit, for example.

This East Coast company, specializing in constructing tricky team building activities designed to test both the brain and the body, visited campus in August ready to put the 7th and 8th graders to work. They brought giant puzzles. They brought rope walls. They brought monkey bars. Much to the delight of teachers who were teenagers in the nineties, they even brought hula hoops.

Before students arrived at school, the JV soccer field was covered with a complex series of games and challenges, all of them designed with a single goal in mind: getting students to work together.

“One of my favorite things about the entire experience is watching students who do not know each other well,” says Kathy Boero, Head of Middle School. “It doesn’t take long for the kids to understand the importance of working as a team to accomplish a physical or cognitive challenge. They have to communicate, cooperate, and encourage one another in order to move on to the next station.”

Communication, cooperation, encouragement. These themes aren’t just front and center at Grit ‘N Wit; rather, they are stressed all year long through experiences like Camp Timber-lee, the annual retreat where students in 5th and 6th grade enjoy multiple days focused on adventure and building friendships, as well as Friendzy, the K-8 curriculum aimed at helping kids discover personal strengths, manage emotions, and cultivate empathy.

When it comes to being a teenager, there is no universal answer key. Everyone’s experience is different. However, by continually reminding them we’re in this together, by providing kids with the tools to communicate, cooperate, and encourage, the hope is that Middle School students at Prairie will unlock their own definitions of self, while also learning what it takes to be good classmates, teammates, and friends.

“Activities like Grit ‘N Wit are so important in Middle School,” says Boero. “By stretching themselves and trying new experiences, students grow confidence, build self-esteem, and develop relationships. It might sound corny, but the kids legitimately seem happier, walk taller, and engage at a deeper level following these activities. They are fully present and focused on a mutual goal.”

The Third Planet from Altair. Who Killed Harlow Thrombley? Survival at Sea.

If you were a child growing up in the 80s or 90s, you probably remember them well. Published by Bantam Books, the Choose Your Own Adventure series sold more than 250,000,000 copies between 1979 and 1998, and were a staple in any school library or book sale. Young readers loved the limitless, anything-is-possible feeling that came with each story.

For Upper School teachers and students, J-Term – short for January Term – is the equivalent of Choose Your Own Adventure.

“Every academic Upper School teacher participates and anyone can submit a proposal,” says Mari Grobschmidt, Upper School Head. “We got over 40 submissions last year. And there was some cool stuff that didn’t make the cut. Studying Technical Theatre in Las Vegas. Music at Disneyland. A cultural experience in Vietnam. The intersection of professional expertise and personal interests in the submissions was fascinating.”

IMPACTFUL EXPERIENCES FOR ALL

J-Term unfolds in the first two weeks following winter break and replaces the program formerly known as Interim. “Interim was tricky,” said Grobschmidt. “It was only for juniors and seniors. It happened at the end of the year when some older students are checked out. It was also based on a student’s potential vocation, whereas J-Term is life experience-based and includes everyone, freshmen through seniors.”

Year one went remarkably well. Transformative trips like Namibia and Philadelphia mixed well with on-campus offerings like Project Runway and Financial Fluency. The goal was to offer immersive experiences across a variety of topics that cannot be covered in Prairie’s regular curriculum. Nearly all students received their first or second choice and student and parent feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

After a short break, it was time to do it all again. And by short, we mean short. “We asked for proposals for 2025 two days after last year’s ended,” says Grobschmidt. “And everyone is very excited about what January has in store.”

FUTURE FACING THE

The multitude of emotions makes sense.

Every spring, Prairie’s soon-to-be graduates, adorned in t-shirts of their chosen colleges, take a winding walk down the path leading from the Upper School to the Johnson Athletic Center before attending the senior slideshow. There is laughter and tears, hugs and high fives. Senior Send-off is something the students – particularly Prairie’s lifers, those who have been a Hawk since Early School or Kindergarten –have looked forward to ever since they were the tiny, wide-eyed children cheering along the sidewalk’s edges. However, while celebratory and exciting by nature, the day is also bittersweet as it marks the senior class’s final day on campus as students.

FUTURE

Over the past four years, Prairie graduates have earned over $49 million in merit scholarships and 1,177 acceptances to 280 colleges and universities across 43 states and six countries.

This map highlights a handful of their selected schools.

At Prairie, creativity is king, so think about each group of graduates in terms of artistic expression. Some classes add surprising, unforeseen elements to the school’s canvas. Some add subtle nuance. All of them leave their fingerprints on the school’s history.

The Class of 2024, a confident, accomplished, close-knit group, liked to paint in big, bold colors. They brought home State Championships. They starred on stage. They impacted their community through a desire to serve. They were also offered over $15 million dollars in merit-based scholarships and 328 offers of admission from 189 of the finest colleges and universities in the country.

We were sad to see them leave. But we are so excited to see where they are headed.

LITERARY COMPETITION CONTINUES

TO STOKE COMPETITIVE FIRES, LOVE OF LITERATURE

It returns every spring, like the cherry red tulips pushing through the soil outside the JAC, or the persistent, difficult to deter geese waddling across campus. As the weather starts to warm, so do the competitive fires burning inside Prairie’s fourth and fifth grade students.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is Battle of the Books and things get pretty intense.

Think Wrestlemania meets Jeopardy.

Alright, maybe it’s not quite that intense. Students don’t (usually) leap from turnbuckles during Battle of the Books. Although there is a championship belt.

Battle of the Books, or BOB as its known by participants – as in, What BOB books are you reading this year? – has been a big deal to Primary School students ever since librarian Kathy Godlewski and CORE teachers Mary Lou Moeller and Kay Chodoronek brought the program to Prairie in the eighties.

The 1986 issue of Prairie Focus reads:

The purposes of this program, which has been used successfully in many schools across the country, is to encourage recreational reading, recognize those students who enjoy reading, broaden students’ reading interests, and to foster good sportsmanship.

Present day preparation for BOB begins shortly after the school year starts, with teachers providing a list of BOB titles to their classes. Students are divided into small teams with each student taking responsibility for four or five of the list’s titles.

In fourth grade students receive extra guidance in the form of critical thinking exercises and regular progress check-ins. In fifth grade the preparation is intentionally autonomous – as students mature, it’s important for them to take ownership of their time and preparation.

Last March, after two preliminary rounds of competition held across campus, the BOB final round – emceed by Alex Trebek McKenzie Weaver, SRC Director – was held in the John Mitchell Theatre between the Flaming Foxes, Midnight Clones, Kittens and Pups, and Bookworms. Emotions were high as it took a sudden death round for the Clones to defeat the Foxes.

Consider it a battle for the ages.

My favorite Battle of the Books title from a few years back is Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. It’s about a sixth-grade girl who struggles with reading and hides it out of shame. Luckily, she meets a teacher who’s the exact mentor she needs, helping her build confidence and self-worth. Her journey shows how self-perception can either lift us up or hold us back. What makes it memorable is how it highlights the impact confidence has on a child’s world. The story is heartbreaking, inspiring, and funny – just like real life.

JUST FIVE YEARS INTO ITS EXISTENCE, PRAIRIE SWIM IS MAKING WAVES

When Prairie introduced swimming in 2018, the hope was that over time the program could grow to compete in the perennially strong Southern Lakes Conference (SLC). That time, it turns out, is now. Prairie School Aquatics (PSA) is on the rise, having improved their performance in each year of the program’s existence.

In 2022-23, the boys finished fourth in the conference, with Nathan Breit ’26 earning First Team honors. This past season the hardware came in droves. Led by Jack Borzynski ’26, five different swimmers earned recognition across seven different events.

At the 2024 State Championship, PSA placed 11th out of 32 teams while setting five new school records. Borzynski finished sixth in the 200 Individual Medley, while Breit placed sixth in the 100 Backstroke.

In January, Borzynski was named Athlete of the Week by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel after a school-wide campaign to elicit support resulted in over 4,000 votes for the talented junior.

Next Stop , Destiny ?

LED BY A HISTORIC PAIR OF SENIORS, PRAIRIE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL AIMS TO FULFILL A DREAM

Team of destiny. You hear the phrase tossed around all the time in every level of athletic competition. It is, of course, nonsense. At least in the mythical, magical sense of the word. Teams aren’t selected at random and sprinkled with championship dust. Destiny doesn’t pick and choose. It’s earned through sweat and tears, sacrifice and determination.

Over the last three years, Coach Abby Jaramillo’s team has gone 72-12. They have won three straight Metro Classic Championships. They have won three straight WIAA Regional Championships. Last season, they added a Sectional title and a Division 4 State Tournament appearance to the list. It has been, inarguably, one of the most dominant stretches for any team, in any sport, in Prairie history.

And yet, anyone affiliated with girls basketball will tell you the same thing: there is more to do.

Thanks in large part to the efforts of seniors and four-year varsity starters JJ Barnes and Meg Decker, the Hawks are a preseason darling once again, and deservedly so. After finishing 2023-24 ranked #2 in the final Division 4 state poll, they are poised to be one of the top teams in the state.

But past accomplishments and future projections don’t win state championships. Gold balls are secured through hard work, tenacity, and resolve.

In November, Barnes (basketball) and Decker (soccer) signed National Letters of Intent to compete collegiately at the Division I level. Next fall, they will be taking their talents to Marquette University. Ring out ahoya.

But first, there’s unfinished business in Wind Point. Practice hours to log. Mettle to shape and sharpen into a formidable grit that will help them overcome any obstacle in their path.

And the entire Prairie community is behind them. There is a reason everyone talks so openly about the possibility of being the last team standing. A reason why Dr. Coffman referenced hanging a banner during his year-opening remarks at Convocation. A reason why Jaramillo has decorated her office door in the JAC with a “Run to the Resch” collage.

This group is hungry. And ready to work. And very well might be a team of destiny.

JJ Barnes ’25, Coach Abby Jaramillo, and Meg Decker ’25 on National Signing Day.

There’s a nice adage that applies to strong friendships. Even when a significant amount of time has passed between interactions, once reunited, it’s almost as if no time has passed at all. The interaction is easy, the pairing natural.

These were the kinds of vibes evident at Alumni Weekend 2024.

For some, it was their first time back on campus in years, if not decades. And while the aesthetics have changed – bigger buildings, new facilities, different landscaping – the familiarity and warmth of the Prairie community has not. It’s timeless, like true friendship.

Thanks to everyone who visited last June. It was great to celebrate amongst friends.

Plans for Alumni Weekend 2025 are already underway. Interested in planning a celebration for your class? Contact Callie Atanasoff, Director of Philanthropy and Engagement, at catanasoff@prairieschool.com.

MLS GOALIE LOGAN KETTERER ’12 RETURNS TO CAMPUS

It’s always nice to welcome alumni back home. The visits are even more meaningful when they incorporate lessons of positivity and resilience.

Earlier this fall, Logan Ketterer ’12 returned to talk with students in Primary and Middle School about his professional soccer career – he is currently a goalie for CF Montreal in the MLS – and the importance of working well with many different types of people and always giving your best, lessons he was first introduced to here at Prairie.

FUNDRAISING BY CONSTITUENCY

G i V inG initi Ati Ves

A ‘culture of philanthropy’ at Prairie means that giving back is deeply embedded in who we are. There are several opportunities for members of our community to participate financially, fostering a sense of shared responsibility to make a positive impact. We are grateful for all of our donors, and would like to recognize their contributions by initiative:

THE PRAIRIE FUND

The Prairie Fund is Prairie’s most important fundraising endeavor, as it touches nearly every aspect of student life. From day-to-day operations to financial assistance to curriculum materials and programming, the impact of the Prairie Fund reaches far and wide.

ENDOWMENT

Prairie’s endowment generates interest to fund the school’s annual operations as well as its scholarship program. Gifts to the endowment ensure Prairie’s financial health for years to come.

THE GOLF CLASSIC & DINNER & PRAIRIE PREMIERE

The Golf Classic & Dinner and Prairie Premiere are two events that directly benefit our school’s scholarship fund, enabling us to support families who may not be able to consider Prairie otherwise. Contributions to these events reinforce our commitment to enrolling the most talented and deserving students.

The Jack Mitchell Society is an opportunity to recognize the impact of donors who have contributed to the Prairie Fund for five or more consecutive years. Named for Prairie’s first head of school, the Jack Mitchell Society reflects the connection and dedication of the Prairie community, and the impact loyal donors can have.

We celebrate those who are welcomed into the Society each year, and are grateful for the many parents, alumni, grandparents, and friends who have long been part of this treasured group.

It takes support from the entire community – faculty, parents, alumni, and grandparents – to continue Prairie’s pursuit of excellence. We would like to thank these donors by constituency as a way to recognize the role they play in the life of our school.

In recent years, Prairie has seen a remarkable increase in parent participation in the Prairie Fund, with giving rates rising from 26% to an impressive 71%. This significant growth is a testament to the deepening sense of community and shared commitment among parents who believe in the school’s mission to nurture and inspire each student. As more parents contribute, they are not only enhancing educational resources but also reinforcing a culture of collaboration and support, ensuring that Prairie continues to provide an enriching environment for all students to thrive.

GrAndPArents‘

In October, these brave 3rd Grade students climbed to the top of the historic Wind Point Lighthouse. The culmination of their lighthouse unit, this field trip – like all Prairie field trips – was possible because of the Prairie Fund. It was a day of learning how the past impacts the present, as well as experiencing how challenging things can become easier when relying on the support of those around you.

Thank you for supporting us. Scan to make your gift to this year’s Prairie Fund.
