Welcome!

Welcome to our First Edition of “The Motif Collective Art of Steel”! Hilton Head Island is a beautiful backdrop for any type of event and during my first visit to both the Island and Concours I was completely awestruck. The cars, weather and a setting second to none make this and truly a must for any motoring enthusiast. This publication was created to add some more depth to my Vintage Automobile work and support followers and organizations that still enjoy a good book format, printed or online. I had produced a couple books in the

past covering events, but even while selling them near cost always felt they were overpriced, so when I saw that Blurb offered a quality and affordable magazine formatted product knew the time was right to put out printed media again. I am an Independent Fine Art Photographer from Fernandina Beach, Florida and try to shoot the major events in the Southeast every year. While most media organizations upload a couple hundred images right from the camera within 24 hours of an event, write 3-4 paragraphs in their online blog and are then done until the next year, I put in an average of 200 hours a year just processing and adding fresh posts and online material for up to 10 months after each event. Add some magazine layout time to put these issues together and I now have about 250 personal unpaid hours invested into trying to put a quality set of images on the street for the event. I love cars and photography even more, and in my mind there is only one way to properly display these magnificent machines, with quality and elegance. I hope you enjoy this first effort and beautiful machines from the 2014 Hilton Head Concours in South Carolina. We do sell prints of these images online and also welcome any comments or feedback, stop by to visit or drop us a line anytime via our Website at: www.AdamsViews.net JOHN E ADAMS Editor-in-Chief

1954 Chevrolet Corvette This car was purchased in 1959 from the original owner who rarely drove it. The current owner then drove it everyday summer and winter until 1966. It is one of only 400 Blue Corvettes built in 1954 and is equipped with both soft and removable hard tops and has been restored to exact original specs.

My Corve e and life philosophy are much the same, the adventure ge ing there is more important than the ďŹ nal destination.

1910 Buick 17

Rediscover the Buick lineup of stylish and efficient luxury cars This was the largest Buick built in 1910, featuring a 318 c.i. engine and a three speed sliding gear transmission. 1927 Isotta Fraschini 8A S Roadster If Alfa Romeo was the greatest Italian sports car of the 1930’s, the Isotta-Franchini was its luxury counterpart. This was the true thoroughbred of Italian motorcars in its day and the most popular foreign marque in the US except for the Rolls-Royce. These cars came with a guarantee that they could run at 2.5 MPH through 90 MPH in the same gear. In Total about 950 Tips 8A’s were built during the 1925-1931 model run.

...we have a car. Not one of those cheap things made of chromium and spit but Iso a Fraschini. Have you ever heard of Iso a Fraschini? All handmade. It cost me twenty eight thousand dollars. Norma Desmond

1935 SS Cars LTD SS 90 Only 24 of these exceedingly rare cars were built from March to November 1935, before being replaced by the SS Jaguar 100 with its bigger motor. Bugatti Blue is the original color as shown on its Jaguar Heritage Certificate, the car also retains its original UK registration, BUF 965 issued July 22, 1935. Called the “90” because it could achieve that speed, the early history of BUF 965 is unknown until the 1950’s when it was raced in hill climbs in England. The present owner purchased the vehicle in 1994, disassembled in a horse barn in Wales. The car came to the US in 2007 after a 13 year restoration in England. This car has won 23 Best in Class, including several perfect scores in JCNA Events, 8 Best in Show and 4 People’s Choice Awards at Keels n Wheels, ACCA and other classic car events.

In 2011, after 90 years of inactivity it was pulled out of the barn by the current owner and they were able to get it running again.

1928 Packard 526 Dual Windshield Phaeton

The first Packard automobiles were produced in 1899, and the last in 1958. Packard was founded in 1899 by James Packard in Warren, Ohio. Packard introduced numerous innovations including the modern steering wheel and the first 12-cylinder engine. By 1928, Packard had become the most popular luxury automobile in America and their slogan “Ask the man who owns one”, was known worldwide. Ironically this car designed and built with the idea that it be driven by a woman. Its shorter hood and smaller engine combined make it easier to maneuver and operate than comparable automobiles. The six cylinder engine has 288.6 cubic inches and produces 81 horsepower. It sits on a 126” wheelbase and weighs 3,950 pounds. The cost of this car new was $2,425.

1930 Minerva AL 3 Position Cabriolet

In all, fewer than 50 examples of the Minerva AL were built, just eight remain and this car is the only known Cabriolet extant. While some may mistake Van den Plas for more common English coachbuilder, Carrosserie Vanden Plas was a noted Belgian coachbuilder. This car is fitted with a period tool kit in the trunk as well as 2 pieces of fitted luggage and it is also an extremely rare, matching #’s, original bodied example. This car has won “Best of Show” at numerous Concours events throughout the US and is currently part of the Joseph Cassini collection.

1951 Vincent Touring Rapide Vincent was a British manufacturer of motorcycles from 1928 to 1955.

Vincent’s twins were the fastest production road machines (2 or 4 wheel) during their day and for a decade after production ceased in 1955. This is one of only 177 Red Rapides produced by the factory and is mated to a period Blacknell Bullet sidecar, only one of ten known in the USA. Blacknell was the sidecar manufacturer preferred and fitted by Vincent. A Touring Rapide is even rarer than the rare Red Rapide produced, the bike features valanced mudguards and taller, wider handlebars than “sports” models. This bike was the winner of the Best in Class and show at the 2014 Vincent Hillbilly Owners B2B Rally.

1948 Jaguar MK IV DHC Only 184 of the Jaguar 3.5 Litre RHD DHC’s were built and few survive today. Sometimes referred to as Cabriolets by enthusiasts, they have a three position hood: Closed, Partially Open and Fully Open. Produced from July 1945 to March 1949, these early postwar Jaguars were officially known by their motor size: 1.5 Litre, 2.5 and 3.5 Litre. Following the introduction of the MK V in October 1948 these cars were often referred to as the MK IV’s. Other than the “J” replacing the SS on the back bumpers they are very similar to the last of the prewar cars. Mechanical features include “trafficators”, four speed transmission and Jaguars last use of Girling mechanical brakes. Originally purchased by Joseph Fattorini, from Glovers in Harrogate, England in August 1948 following his service in WW2. The current owner is in contact with his son who remembers riding in the car as a child.

1931 Cord L29 Cabriolet The Cord L29 was the first production front wheel drive car produced in the USA. E.L. Cord owner of the Auburn Automobile Company, wanted a car priced between the Auburn and the Duesenberg cars. The L29 was also the first production car with a unit power plant of an engine, transmission, differential and front brakes as one unit. 1929 Jaguar Austin Swallow Sports By 1926 William Lyons had expanded his motorcycle sidecar business into production of small coupes and sport run-abouts called Austin Swallows. These cars predate Lyons 1931 SS cars, and the first Jaguars of 1935, and are an important part of the early history of the company. The Austin Swallow featured Lyons stylish designed body built on the basic and very humble Austin 7 chassis and motor that Herbert Austin was more than willing to sell. Known as the oldest running “Jaguar” in the US this Austin Swallow is completely unrestored and a good example of the early automobile workmanship of its era. Several thousand of these small cars (less than 800 were sports) were sold and helped lay the financial foundation company we know today as Jaguar.
