UNDERSTANDING BREAST CANCER: FACTS AND MYTHS
Written By: Raquel Shante de Lemos
When it comes to breast cancer, there's a lot of information out there and it can be overwhelming From social media posts to well-meaning advice from friends, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of facts and myths October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so now’s the perfect time to clear up some of the confusion
Let’s break down some of the most common myths and replace them with facts that every woman (and man!) should know
Myth #1: Breast cancer only affects women.
Fact: Men can get breast cancer too.
While it’s much more common in women, men also have breast tissue and can develop breast cancer. The risk for men is lower (less than 1% of all breast cancers), but it’s important for everyone to be aware of symptoms like lumps or changes in the breast area. If something feels off, don't ignore it get it checked out!
Myth #2: If you don’t have a family history, you won’t get breast cancer.
Fact: Most people diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history.
You might be surprised to learn that 85% of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history of the disease While having a family history can increase your risk, it’s not the only factor Lifestyle choices, environmental exposure, and age also play a part That’s why regular checkups and screenings are so important, no matter your family history
Myth #3: Wearing a bra causes breast cancer.
Fact: There’s no evidence that bras cause breast cancer.
This is one of the myths that has been around for a long time, but science doesn’t back it up Whether you prefer wired or wireless bras, tight-fitting or loose, wearing a bra has no effect on your chances of developing breast cancer Your choice in lingerie is a personal preference, not a health risk!
Myth #4: Only older women need to worry about breast cancer.
Fact: Breast cancer can affect women of any age
While it’s true that your risk increases as you get older, breast cancer can happen at any age Young women can (and do) get diagnosed, which is why being aware of your body i key Regular self-exams and being mindful of changes in your breasts should be a part o your health routine, no matter your age.
Myth #5: A lump in your breast always means cancer.
Fact: Not all lumps are cancerous
Finding a lump in your breast can be scary, but it doesn’t always mean cancer. In fact, man breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous) and can be due to things like hormonal change cysts, or fibroadenomas However, if you do find a lump or notice any changes in you breasts it’s important to see your doctor to make sure everything is okay
Myth #6: A mammogram can cause breast cancer to spread. Fact: Mammograms don’t spread breast cancer.
Mammograms are the best tool we have for early detection, and there’s no evidence tha the pressure from the test causes cancer to spread. Early detection is key, an mammograms can detect breast cancer up to two years before a lump can be felt So, don let fear keep you from getting this life-saving screening
Myth #7: If you have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, you will definitely get breast cancer. Fact: Not everyone with a BRCA gene mutation gets breast cancer.
Yes, having a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation increases your risk, but it doesn’t guarante that you will get breast cancer. Many women with the mutation never develop the disease. If you have a strong family history, genetic testing can give you more information about your risk and help you make decisions about prevention
Know the Facts, Protect Yourself
Breast cancer can be a scary topic, but the more we know, the better equipped we are take control of our health Early detection is crucial, and there are plenty of things you c do to stay proactive like performing regular self-exams and scheduling mammograms on you reach the recommended age or if you're at higher risk.
Remember, knowledge is power Don’t be afraid to ask questions, seek second opinions, have those important conversations with your doctor. Staying informed is the first step protecting yourself from breast cancer.

Can you share your journey with Triple Negative Breast Cancer and how it influenced your path to becoming a survivor and advocate?
In the beginning, finding out that I had Triple Negative Breast Cancer all types of emotions was brought on I didn’t really know what it was because I never heard of it At the time, I just knew that it was an aggressive cancer, and the survival rate was very low So, what is Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC)? It is an aggressive type of invasive breast cancer TNBC differs from other types of cancers; it tends to grow and spread faster, has fewer treatment options and tends to have a worse prognosis (outlook) The term Triple-Negative Breast Cancer refers to the fact that the cancer cells don’t have estrogen or progesterone receptors (ER or PR) and also don’t make any or too much protein called HER2 The cells test “negative on all 3 tests With that being said I truly didn’t know which way to go or what to do I began thinking about death
With the thought that I was going to die I started feeling sad for myself I didn’t want to eat I didn’t want to see or talk to anyone I remember just lying down in my bed crying The only thing that would come to mind was my babies I was setting arrangements in my head Where would they would go? Who would take care of them? Who would keep them together? Who would treat them right? Then one day my daughter came into my room and was telling me how school was and that she wanted to do cheer We talked and laughed, and as she left my room, I began to want to fight
I got up and started doing my own homework on what Triple Negative was I started praying and began to believe I could possibly beat this I started speaking life upon myself I got out the bed and started cleaning and cooking dinner I remember preparing plates for my children and my husband It was something about this day that made me feel like I got this I went to my oncologist, and I began my treatment Six rounds of chemotherapy Ugh such a horrible feeling I began loosing all my hair from everywhere Weak and tired Feeling ugly Feeling unattractive
Once I was done with treatments I then had surgery to remove my breast Then, I began feeling less than a woman Lastly, I began my radiation, which burned my skin badly from the inside to the outside It looked as if someone stuck an iron to my skin Very painful Once I finshed with that I waited to hear the outcome My doctor told me no cancer was in my body, and it was safe to say I was cancer-free Through all of this, I changed my way of eating I detoxed my mind body and soul I made my relationship stronger with God I kept the faith All of this made me want to share my story and let other TNBC survivors know that they could possibly beat this I felt my story would help someone
What motivated you to start Err’ThangOnFleek Boutique, and how do your personal experiences influence your product line?
Err’ThangOnFleek Boutique is just what the name says it is Everything about you is that girl Everything about you is beautiful Everything about you is attractive and stylish I couldn’t find anything that would work for me while doing chemotherapy that could help my hair grow back, so I decided to come up with something to help my hair grow back with all the different types of chemicals that would destroy the hair Once I used the product, I saw hair foibles growing and I felt good and wanted to share it I wanted cancer patients to look in the mirror, use my products and feel good about themselves because I remembered what It felt like when I looked at myself Not only do my products help cancer patients they also help alopecia patients and everyone whose hair is damaged or thin
Tell us more about Triple Negative Won’t Win LLC What are its primary goals, and how does it support those affected by Triple Negative Breast Cancer?
Triple Negative Won’t Win LLC is a small non-profit that helps cancer patients during and after treatments financially and physically When I was diagnosed with cancer, I lost both my jobs I couldn’t pay my rent, car payments, or any bills All these huge organizations either didn’t have the funds or they would refer you to other organizations that weren t much help either I wanted to be able to help in that area In addition I create wigs We also help with clothing, gift cards, school supplies and so forth The goal is to provide services to help with basic needs
How do you use your platform to raise awareness about Triple Negative Breast Cancer, and what impact have you seen so far?
I have different platforms I have TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, FaceBook, and Snapchat On all platforms I educate about Triple Negative Breast Cancer I also share my testimony because I know my story can help someone I have received emails, dm’s and phone calls from people saying I have helped them In fact I even had a young lady tell me about her going to go to the doctor to get checked She said she never wanted to get checked because she was afraid Her hearing me and watching my journey gave her strength In addition I have met people who have cancer and tell me I give them hope that I make them want to fight
Err’ThangOnFleek Boutique is an exciting venture
How do you ensure that your products stand out in the competitive beauty market?
The fact that there is a cancer symbol on my products raises attention It makes you wonder Then, when you pick the products up they smell good A lot of growth products for hair have a different type of smell Some don’t smell too good In addition, they are organic and very affordable
Can you give us a preview of what viewers can expect from The Life Of A Biker’s Wife?
The Life Of A Biker s Wife is about 6 women who are either married to a biker dated and divorced a biker or dating and possibly engaged to a biker This show will show their everyday life as a mother, wife, or girlfriend The good the bad and the ugly It would show all that they experience on the bike set While showing support and sisterhood to each other
Looking ahead, what are your future goals for both businesses?
As I speak on my businesses, Triple Negative Won’t Win LLC and Err’Thang On Fleek Boutique, I speak that I will have the funds to get another building to run both businesses out of and be able to provide all the things that are needed to cover the overhead and help all my pink sisters and brothers during treatments and after in their time of need financially and physically I also will have a mobile mammogram to do onsite testing
SURVIVOR STORIES: TRIUMPH OVER ADVERSITY
JEMICIA FRANKLIN
At just 23 years old, Jemicia Franklin faced a battle many of us never expect in our twenties breast cancer. Navigating life as a young adult is challenging enough, but a cancer diagnosis added a layer of fear, uncertainty, and strength she didn’t know she had. In this heartfelt survivor story, Jemicia opens up about her journey from diagnosis to recovery, the emotional and physical toll of treatment, and how she found hope in the darkest moments Her story is one of courage, resilience, and the unshakable will to live Jemicia’s message is clear: even when life throws the unexpected your way, you can still rise, stronger and braver than before
When were you diagnosed? I was 23 years old
How did you find out? I went for my annual check-up
How did you react to your diagnosis?
I cried hysterically I called my mother, who also had just been diagnosed for the second time
What was the most beneficial type of support that you received from your family, friends, etc ?
Having a family that prayed and supported me in any way that I needed was crucial One of my cousins even went with me and held my hand when I had to cut my hair off Whether it was just to sit and talk or cook and clean, it made a difference having the presence of those who I knew wouldn’t let me fight alone
What advice do you have for women who may be afraid to get a mammogram?
It’s not comfortable and definitely nerve-racking, but it’s better to find out early than late
What has been the most significant change you see in yourself now?
I don’t take life for granted I don’t sweat the small things And when something feels off, I’m getting to the doctor right away
Are you ever afraid that it may come back? Why or why not? If so, how do you cope?
I’m always afraid every time I go get checked It’s always in the back of my mind “What if it comes back?
I have kids now They need me It can’t come back ” Calling and talking to my dad after always helps me calm down I also think about what my mom would say if she was here

Shaylaray, you have a diverse career spanning modeling, acting, cosplaying, and writing. How did you first get involved in these various fields, and what inspired you to pursue them all?
I started modeling soon after I got into sex work After a year or two of modeling, I decided to branch out into acting. Social networking in the acting industry led me into cosplaying I think the biggest inspiration for me to pursue all of these different careers in such a short amount of time was the courage to try new things If I had never broken out of my comfort zone, I would’ve never found these passions of mine.
Balancing multiple roles can be challenging. How do you manage to transition between modeling, acting, and writing, and what strategies do you use to stay organized and creative?
As a multipotentialite, it is fairly easy for me to transition between modeling, acting, and writing I feel like the more I tap into the creative side of me, the easier it is to use this creativity for different creative interests
You have upcoming roles in horror comedies and unique projects as a scare actress. Can you share a bit about these projects and what drew you to these particular roles?
Yes, I can I have just recently finished my first role in a horror comedy titled AirBnB Nightmare, as well as my first role as a scare actress for the horror event called Midsummer Scream These first-time experiences, although nerve-wracking, went extremely well for me which led me into doing more of these things I now have roles in two upcoming horror comedies but will keep the movie titles disclosed for now, and an upcoming gig as a scare actress in yet another scare maze I have decided to cosplay as “Pearl” from one of my favorite scary movies
Your work as a cosplayer involves embodying a variety of characters. How do you prepare for these roles, and which character has been your favorite to portray so far?
To prepare for these roles, I do research on the characters I plan to embody, put together my own costume, and rewatch the film they are in so I can study their lines, mannerisms, and behaviors My favorite character to portray so far is final girl “Sally Hardesty” from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Your modeling work has been featured in several magazines. What has been the most memorable shoot or project you ’ ve worked on, and what do you enjoy most about modeling?
I’ve loved all the photo shoots I’ve been in so far, and they’ve all been memorable in different ways, but the one I favor the most is the boudoir photoshoot I did with All Things Boudoir I think this photoshoot was the most memorable because it was the first time I had my picture taken in intimate clothing by someone other than myself, and after seeing the photos, I just felt so confident and sexy like never before That’s what I enjoy most about modeling- the way it makes you feel confident and good about yourself and your body
You’re a published poet and are preparing to debut your own poetry book. What messages does your poetry explore, and what inspired you to write this collection?
The theme of my first-ever published poem is selflove, which I believe is the best theme I could’ve started out with In my upcoming poetry book, I will explore many themes that have happened throughout my life, from the darkness of trauma, addiction, family issues and mental illness to the light of self-love, recovery, healing, spirituality, and happiness I was inspired to write this book because I have a knack for writing, and when I saw the opportunity from Book Leaf Publishing, I knew I had to jump on it right away, and I’m so glad I did! I can’t wait to express my truths using the creative outlet of poetry
How does writing poetry influence your work in other creative areas, such as acting and modeling? Do you find that your experiences in one field enhance your skills in another?
Writing has always come easy to me I have been writing ever since I was a child. Whether it be songs, stories, poems, or journaling, I have always enjoyed writing and used it as sort of an escape I think that the way writing poetry, or just writing in general, influences my work in other creative outlets is that I get to express myself through words, which then makes it easier to express other aspects of myself, such as my clothing, for example When one door of creativity opens, it reveals many other doors of creativity. I most definitely believe that my experiences in one field enhance my skills in another

Spooky Self-Care
HalloweenInspired Wellness Routines
WrittenbyRaquelShantedeLemos
It’s October and we ’ re all about the spooky season pumpkin spice everything, cooler nights, and the chance to get a little creative with costumes and décor But while we ’ re getting into the Halloween spirit, why not add a bit of “spooky” fun to our self-care routines?
Self-care doesn’t have to be all serious; in fact, it can be festive, fun, and as magical as your favorite Halloween candy and scary movies!
Let’s dive into some Halloween-inspired selfcare routines that will help you feel relaxed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the rest of the year.
Witchy Bath Rituals
Picture this: dim lighting, candles flickering, and your bathroom transformed into a calming, mystical space. A “witchy” bath is all about creating a magical, spa-like experience that feels luxurious and healing You don’t need a cauldron just a tub!
What you’ll need:
Bath salts (bonus points for lavender or eucalyptus)
A few drops of essential oils (try rose, cedarwood, or frankincense for that earthy vibe)
A sprinkle of dried herbs (think chamomile or rosemary)
Candles for ambiance
Your favorite spooky playlist or meditation sounds
Let yourself soak and unwind Visualize stress melting away like candy in a cauldron, and take deep, intentional breaths You’ll emerge feeling as refreshed as a full moon night
Pumpkin Face Mask Magic
Pumpkins aren’t just for pies and lattes they’re packed with vitamins and nutrients that are great for your skin! A DIY pumpkin face mask will leave you glowing brighter than a jack-o’lantern
DIY Pumpkin Mask Recipe:
2 tbsp of pureed pumpkin (canned is fine)
1 tbsp of honey (great for hydration)
1 tbsp of yogurt (gentle exfoliation)
Mix it all together and apply to your face for 10-15 minutes The pumpkin is full of antioxidants and enzymes that gently exfoliate, leaving your skin soft and radiant. Wash it off, and you’ll have a natural glow that could rival the moon!
Haunted House Cleanup: Declutter Your Space, Declutter Your Mind
One of the best ways to feel mentally lighter is by decluttering your space Use the spooky season to “clear out the cobwebs,” both literally and figuratively
Set the mood by putting on your favorite Halloween movie or playlist, grab a cup of tea or cider, and start organizing one area of your home Maybe it’s your closet, your desk, or that one drawer in the kitchen that’s been haunting you for months. By clearing out old items that no longer serve you, you ’ re making room for fresh, positive energy
Pro tip: Sage or palo santo makes for a great way to cleanse your space after your cleanup, creating a refreshing energy shift
Ghost Your Stress: Practice Letting Go
Sometimes, the scariest thing is the stress and pressure we carry around with us This October, try “ghosting” the negativity and letting go of what no longer serves you. One way to do this is with a simple journaling exercise
Take a few minutes to sit down with your journal and write about the things that have been weighing you down whether it’s work stress, relationship drama, or just the general overwhelm of life
Then, flip the script. Write down what you can do to release those feelings Maybe it’s setting better boundaries, practicing more selfcompassion, or taking a mental health day
When you ' re done, close your journal, take a deep breath, and say out loud: “I let go ” It might feel a little witchy, but trust me it works!
Potion-Making: Brew Up a Calming Tea
You don’t have to be a witch to brew a calming potion! Whipping up your own herbal tea blend can be just as relaxing as drinking it. Try this simple, soothing tea recipe for those chilly October nights:
Ingredients:
1 tsp dried chamomile
1 tsp dried lavender
A pinch of cinnamon
Honey to taste
Brew it up and sip slowly while curled up with a cozy blanket and a good book (or your favorite
How to do it:
Find a quiet spot (outside u the moonlight is perfect if you
Sit or lie down, close your eyes take deep breaths
Focus on letting go of any neg energy and visualize you achieving your goals.
If you like, write down intentions afterward and keep in a journal or on your alta nightstand) as a reminder.
This is your time to reset, recharge reconnect with yourself
Treat Yourself—No Tricks
Halloween is the perfect time embrace the magic of self
Whether you ' re indulging in a rela bath, pampering your skin, or cle your space and mind, these sp inspired wellness routines will help feel grounded and energized.
Remember, self-care doesn’t have serious all the time sometimes, a fun and festivity is exactly wha need to refresh our spirits
So, go ahead and cast a spe relaxation on yourself this Oct You deserve it, queen!
Full Moon Meditation
The full moon is a time for reflection and renewal Whether you believe in the power of the moon or just love how magical it looks, it’s a great excuse to take a moment for yourself
Try a full moon meditation to clear your mind and set intentions for the rest of the month
