About Buckhorn

We are located at Lock 31 on the Trent Severn Waterway. From our origins as a sawmill town in the 1880s, we are still a vibrant community rich in historical and cultural heritage, fine arts and culture, family events and scenic attractions. Time spent here will seem short because there is so much to do and see. You will want to come back time and again!

All essentials for a great vacation are at hand in Buckhorn. We have great little shops, restaurants, tea rooms, bed and breakfasts, bakeries, marinas, fine art galleries and so much more. Being surrounded by lakes, rivers and trails, summer is our busiest time

of year with cottaging, boating, fishing, swimming. Our other seasons offer lots of activities for the whole family like ice fishing, skiing, snowmobiling and skating on our new outdoor ice rink.

Drop by our Welcome Centre located next to the LCBO for more information on businesses, attractions, accommodations and entertainment. You will be overwhelmed by how much we have to offer. Check out our website at www. buckhorn.ca. We hope to see you soon!

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

The Buckhorn area is the perfect place to explore nature from the water.

Most area resorts provide watercraft for their guests, including kayaks and boats. There are also local businesses that rent these if you’re staying at a cottage or B&B. You can get a stand-up paddleboard or kayak for a little exercise as you enjoy the view along the shore. Or try your hand at fishing and catch a pickerel, bass or sunfish. Some of our resorts host fishing derbies in the summer to give your kids an introduction to the sport of fishing and can be fun for the whole family.

Ontario Family Fishing events give you the opportunity to fish our waters without a license three times a year -- May 13 and 14; June 17 and 18; and July 1 to 9. At all other times, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years need to purchase a license to fish.

Houseboating has become more popular in recent years. You can take a cruise around the lakes and through the locks, enjoying time with family and friends on the water. Anchor in one of the lazy bays on Buckhorn Lake overnight and enjoy the sunset from

your own floating deck. A great way to relax and experience lake life.

If your interests lie in exploring nature on solid ground, there are plenty of opportunities to do that in the Buckhorn area. Hiking trails, through Mother Nature’s backdrop of granite, forests and rivers can bring you to your own sense of wonder.

The Kawartha Highlands Signature

Site Park is the second largest provincial park in Ontario. The entrance just north of Buckhorn gives you access to a 1.5km hiking trail along the Mississauga River. This site features a special interpretive trail that tells the story of the River, its history and how it is linked to settlement and the history of the Buckhorn area.

You can find out more about this, and other area trails at www.buckhorn.ca.

Those looking for a more sedate adventure in the Buckhorn area can find picnic areas and, of course, Sandy Beach.

Ode’naang Park is located beside the Trent Canal in “downtown” Buckhorn. It provides the perfect spot for your picnic lunch or to sit on the bench and watch the boats go into the Lock. Enjoy a slice of pizza or ice cream cone while you enjoy the sights.

For the beach sitters and swimming enthusiasts, Sandy Beach is the place to be. Sandy Beach is known for its expanse of soft sand that extends into Sandy Lake, which reminds many visitors of a Caribbean oasis of turquoise water.

There’s something for everyone from summer camps and activities for the kids, art and craft shows, senior’s programs, fitness classes, dinner theatre and much, much more. Check out the events listing in this guide and online at www.buckhorncommunitycentre.com

Here in Buckhorn, that’s due to the limestone bottom of the lake. There are no lifeguards, but parking and portable toilets are on hand,

Let’s talk about winter activities for a moment.

The Buckhorn District Snowmobile Club maintains trails throughout the area and is a great place to start. BDSC volunteers and grooming staff maintain approximately 165 kilometres of trails through varying terrain, from the east shore of Chemong Lake in the south, to the Gooderham area in the north. More information about the Club and area trails can be found on Facebook at BuckhornDSC.

For those who like exploring the winter wonderland on foot, most parks are open for hiking year round. Strap on your snowshoes or cross-country skis for a day out in the fresh air.

HERITAGE

The Buckhorn area is steeped in history, with all the conveniences of modern life.

The hamlet of Buckhorn is nestled in the Municipality of Trent Lakes and the bridge across the Trent-Severn Waterway links to the Township of Selwyn.

The Curve Lake Anishinaabe (Ojibway) community traces their origins to 1829 when a small band settled around Curve Lake and Mud Lake. The community officially became a reserve in 1837. You can trace the roots of the Indigenous People with a visit to the Curve Lake Cultural Centre, or attend their annual Pow Wow in September.

The Municipality of Trent Lakes is the amalgamation of former townships Galway-Cavendish and Harvey. In 2013, the township became Trent Lakes, to reognize the role of the tourist and cottage industry to the Trent-Severn Waterway system.

you can find remnants of the logging industry that brought early settlers and workers to the Buckhorn area. If you’re hiking the historic trails, you can get a glimpse of the majestic granite rocks and tall trees that make this one of Mother Nature’s splendours.

In 2019, Buckhorn received the designation of Trent-Severn Trail Town, connecting nine communities along the Trent-Severn Waterway.

ARTS & CULTURE

Because of the beauty of our natural landscape, the Buckhorn area is home to many worldrenowned artists.

We also attract hundreds of art lovers every year to attend our special events and artists’ studios.

The Buckhorn Festival of the Arts at the Buckhorn Community Centre in August features more than 80 artists from across Canada showcasing their paintings, sculpture, jewellery and photography. The annual Youth Art Competition and Amateur Art Competition at the Festival ensures the next generation of “great artists” get recognition for their talent. Visit www.buckhornfineart.com.

Studio tours take place throughout the area, usually in the summer and fall. Many are self-guided tours where you can discover where and how our artists live

and work. Some will let you in on their creative process and share their passion for their work.

The Whetung Ojibwa Centre at Curve Lake is where to go to experience and purchase art from Indigenous artists. It offers a spectacular collection of Native crafts as well as Fine Art, Jewellery, Moccasins, Leather Work and Sculptures from Curve Lake First Nation and across Canada. One can literally spend hours browsing through the gallery rooms.

The Petroglyphs Provincial Park is located just 30 minutes from Buckhorn. It has the largest known concentration of Indigenous rock carvings (petroglyphs) in Canada, depicting turtles, snakes, birds, humans and more. This sacred site is known as “The Teaching Rocks”. The location of the site was kept hidden from non-First Nation people until 1954, when it was rediscovered accidentally by a prospector. Visit www.ontarioparks. com/park/petroglyphs.

ADAM & EVE ROCKS

A short drive or stroll down Adam & Eve Road, atop a short hill, are the remnants of the glacial activity in the area thousands of years ago. These two glacial rocks are named after the original man and woman in Christianity. Folklore has it that if a

young couple can hold hands and each touch one of the rocks, their lives will be blessed.

THE CODY INN

The Cody Inn sits on top of the hill across from Lock 31. The original house was built in 1905 as a private residence and in 1921, was converted into a hotel named The Windsor House. It became well-known as a luxurious fishing lodge and folks from as far away as the States came to stay. In 1975, the lodge was purchased by Francis

Cody, who renamed it Cody Inn which it remains today. In 2000 the Inn was turned into a restaurant that offers up some of the best Chinese food in the Kawarthas!

BUCKHORN BUCK

This statue of Buckhorn Buck was erected to commemorate the namesake of the town of Buckhorn. The area has a huge population of Whitetail Deer, making this the hunters paradise in the fall. It’s the town’s unofficial mascot and is popular with those looking to take a selfie!

If you’ve rented a houseboat or bring your own cruiser, Lock 31 at Buckhorn offers nightly mooring. In the summer, you’re limited to a onenight stay, but even that will be a delight. The park beside Lock 31 has picnic tables, barbecues and campfire pits. All you need to do is bring the s’mores!

LOCAL SERVICES

TRENT LAKES LIBRARY

Finding the right read to help you unwind is easy in Buckhorn. The Trent Lakes Library features the latest best-sellers, as well as a full selection of Canadian works, DVDs, and novels for every reading level. During the year, the helpful Library staff host a Kid’s Program every Wednesday.

COMMUNITY CARE

This home support agency has developed a comprehensive volunteerbased transportation service for seniors and people with special needs. Community Care Harvey also offers fitness programs, Meals on Wheels and hospice services. Throughout the

year, they also hold fund-raising events that are well worth attending. For more information, visit communitycareptbo. org.

TRANSER STATION

In the Municipality of Trent Lakes, there are three transfer stations for your garbage and recycling. In 2017, more than 300 tonnes of garbage were rerouted into our recycling bins. That’s pretty impressive. Part of the reason was the new ‘clear bag’ policy enforced by the municipality – all garbage must be brought to the transfer station in a clear bag. And yes, the staff do take a look inside to make sure all possible recyclable materials are being recycled. But as you can see, the reduction in waste was significant.
