Finding the Advantage: Growing to Serve

Gerry Harrington, Esq., and Ken Knox and Marianne Holmes honored at Circle of Stars Over 300 guests gathered to honor Gerry Harrington, Esq., and Ken Knox and Marianne Holmes for their philanthropic support of the community at The Providence Center’s annual Circle of Stars event on Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at the Rhode Island Convention Center. The event raised over $180,000 in support of The Providence Center’s Coping with Crisis fund, which supports uninsured and underinsured children, adults and families who rely on The Providence Center for mental health and substance use services. Dale K. Klatzker, Ph.D., president/CEO of The Providence Center, introduced Knox and Holmes. “Marianne and Ken define philanthropy,” said Klatzker. “They understand the importance of giving back. Both as a couple and individually, they have generously devoted their time and financial resources to helping others. They are true examples of people who give without expecting recognition.” Former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy spoke via video about Harrington. “Gerry is The Providence Center’s voice in Washington. He is a gifted, caring, warm-hearted person dedicated to advocating for this wonderful organization. Gerry, I am pleased to join The Providence Center and all your friends this

56 new positions, 9 new programs and $3.7 million in federal grants in the last year… While the nation and Rhode Island, in particular, continues to feel the effects of the recession, The Providence Center has grown to serve the needs of even more Rhode Islanders with mental health and substance use issues. What’s the secret to The Providence Center’s growth? It’s the “TPC Advantage.” Driven by client and community needs, The Providence Center has developed new programs that serve individuals across all stages of life and at all levels of care, including some of Rhode Island’s neediest populations—the uninsured, the underinsured, the homeless, individuals with chronic primary health concerns, children, ex-offenders and veterans. The result is strategic, sustainable programming that is client focused, rather than funding dependent. “Our mission is to provide the best behavioral healthcare so that each client’s unique needs are met,” said President/CEO Dale K. Klatzker, Ph.D. “Being strategic and innovative in program development ensures that new programs continue to support our mission efficiently and effectively, either by supporting a targeted population, eliminating an accessibility issue or fulfilling an unaddressed need in the community.” The Providence Center believes strongly in the power and potential of recovery—that all clients, regardless of the challenges they face, can recover. Applying this recoverybased model of behavioral health, The Providence Center’s programs serve the whole person, striving to address each client’s behavioral, physical and life needs.

Creating a safe, positive learning environment at The Providence Center School For many of us, sharing in a discussion about a reading assignment, chatting with friends at lunch and going to school events are happy memories from our school days. But, when a student has severe anxiety, can’t focus on a task or withdraws from social situations, these enjoyable activities can become their worst fears.

responsibility and safety, PBIS creates an engaging, responsive and productive learning environment by applying positive approaches to problem solving and proactive intervention strategies.

Students who have difficulty succeeding in their community schools as a result of emotional, social or behavioral issues turn to The Providence Center School where supportive clinical and educational programming helps them develop skills to manage emotions and behavior.

The Providence Center School is dedicated to creating a safe learning environment and has developed campaigns to educate the school community on issues that affect students. This year, the “Think Before You Bully” campaign promotes positive social interactions in the early childhood, middle school and high school programs. “Think Before You Bully” engages the entire school community—students, families and staff—in understanding the impact of bullying on both the victim and the bully.

“The goal of The Providence Center School’s therapeutic programs is to understand the students’ behaviors and guide them in developing problem-solving skills that may be used to make healthy, safe behavior choices at school, at home and in the community,” said Marty Morris, principal. “Behavioral and academic expectations are set with each student’s history and special needs in mind, so every student can achieve their full potential.” The statewide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program guides the behavioral intervention and management strategies at The Providence Center School. Focusing on respect,

“Highlighting our students’ strengths is critical to their success,” explains Clinical Psychologist Erin Lane, Psy.D. “Our therapeutic interventions are tailored to each student’s unique abilities and needs, so they feel empowered to make positive changes.”

“When our students transition out of The Providence Center School, we want them to be conscious of how their behaviors affect others,” said Morris. “The ‘Think Before You Bully’ campaign and our PBIS program are effective in encouraging positive behaviors in students in all grades.” To learn more about The Providence Center School go to www.tpcschool.org

The Charles E. Maynard Society inducts eight new members At a ceremony held at the University Club in Providence, Rhode Island, The Providence Center inducted eight new members into the Charles E. Maynard Society on September 13, 2011. The Society, named for The Providence Center’s founder and president/CEO for more than three decades, Charles E. Maynard, honors community members who have made a significant contribution to The Providence Center. The event was hosted by Gina Raimondo, general treasurer of the state of Rhode Island, and her husband Andy Moffit. The Providence Center’s president/CEO, Dale K. Klatzker, Ph.D., expressed heartfelt thanks to the group and talked about how The Providence Center has expanded services to support its belief in treating the whole person. “With your help and the help of several grants, we have been able to expand our services to include primary healthcare, wellness programs and recovery support for our clients,” said Klatzker. “Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the people we serve.” “The Providence Center is vital to our community,” said Raimondo. “Despite funding cuts, this amazing organization has found ways to expand services to meet the needs of so many Rhode Islanders. We share a belief in innovation and problem solving and doing what it takes to take care of all our citizens, from the wealthy to the most vulnerable.”

this need through partnerships that brought primary care services to The Providence Center. Now, clients receive their physical, mental health and substance use care under one roof.” Working with partners in the community is critical to creating an accessible, efficient and effective behavioral health delivery system. The Providence Center’s Linda Marsella, Sandy Gertz, Lisanewest Heintzelman and (Recovery-oriented, Kim Schold program, RESPECT Empathic Services Proactively Empowering Consumers in Treatment), combines the strengths of The Providence Center, Phoenix House, CharterCARE Health Partners and CODAC to provide comprehensive substance use treatment and communitybased wraparound services to uninsured and indigent Rhode Islanders experiencing psychiatric or substance use crises. The latest grant awarded to The Providence Center by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration supports Home Base, a collaborative initiative between The Providence Center, Rhode Island housing providers and homeless advocates designed to combat chronic homelessness in Rhode Island’s neediest cities: Providence, Pawtucket, Cranston, Central Falls and Woonsocket. “We know we can’t do the important work we do alone,” said Klatzker. “Partnering with other agencies and organizations has allowed us to increase access to services for our clients so there is no wrong door to care.” At the heart of The Providence Center’s growth and expansion is a dedicated staff of over 500 employees in clinical and administrative positions who support the organization’s mission. “The staff at The Providence Center is dedicated to the clients they serve, and the organization is dedicated to providing them with the training and resources they need to succeed professionally,” said Klatzker. Strategic, innovative and efficient — The Providence Center applies “The TPC Advantage” to create a behavioral healthcare system in which every individual who needs care receives the broadest possible array of services, so that his or her unique needs are met.

Alpha Pension Group Working to improve the quality of retirement plans and employee education

We take the individual’s perspective, which is not ‘wealth management’ but ‘wealth creation’ for all our clients.” Alpha Pension assumed responsibility Paul Koch for overseeing The Providence Center’s retirement plan in 2007. At that time, Cawthorne and his partner Mark Salamone, who joined the firm in 2004, expanded the Massachusetts-based firm into Rhode Island, hiring Doug Padden and Patrick Nee as advisors. “Each year we’ve added over $100 million in new business and 20 new clients, which is double the average for our industry,” said Cawthorne.

Patrick Nee, Rich Cawthorne and Mark Salamone “From the minute we learned about the amazing things The Providence Center does, we wanted to be involved,” said Richard J. Cawthorne, Jr., president and founder of Alpha Pension Group. “The Providence Center’s employees are so dedicated and work incredibly hard. We want to make sure their money works just as hard for them.” Alpha Pension Group was created because of Cawthorne’s belief that the conventional pension system is outdated and has critical flaws. The traditional focus on “wealth management” (focusing solely on long-term goals) and inadequate personalized advice for participants are problems that Cawthorne has a passion for changing. “Alpha Pension is unique because we evaluate short- and longterm goals and provide personalized advice.

As financial advisors to The Providence Center’s employees, Cawthorne, Salamone and Padden are available to counsel employees at any time free of charge either over the phone, in person at The Providence Center, at their office in Providence or at the employee’s home. “Whether an employee is new to the plan, looking to retire, purchasing a home or planning to put a child through college, we look at all assets—retirement plan, 403B, spouse’s assets—everything we need to put together a comprehensive financial plan,” said Cawthorne. Alpha Pension Group’s dedication to The Providence Center doesn’t stop at retirement planning. “Alpha Pension has been a staunch supporter of our fundraising efforts for many years,” said Lisa Desbiens, chief development officer at The Providence Center. “Rich has served on our golf committee and secured sponsorships and auction items for both our golf tournament and Circle of Stars auctions.”

In September 2011, Alpha Pension Group was inducted into The Providence Center’s Charles E. Maynard Society, joining a group of donors whose cumulative giving to The Providence Center totals $10,000 or more. Additionally, the company was recently honored as The Providence Center’s Partner in Philanthropy on National Philanthropy Day last November. The Providence Center is grateful to Alpha Pension Group and pleased to partner with them to help ensure quality retirement planning for its employees.
