A LETTER FROM PURIST’S EDITORS has traditionally picked the best films, and this year is no exception. From the love story of one of my childhood favorite poets, A.A. Milne, in Goodbye Christopher Robbins to Jennifer Garner’s gripping role in The Tribes of Palos Verdes, there are so many great films to see. Thank you Anne, Alec, Randy, and David for your partnership!

We at PURIST are so thrilled to be the media partner for the Hamptons International Film Festival. After all, what could be more stimulating and inspiring than watching a great film, and that is precisely PURIST’s mission—to inspire a positive state of well-being. The festival has been enhancing, enriching and captivating this community for 25 years. Most of us remember its beginnings and have watched it become a major festival on the film circuit leading up to the big awards ceremonies. HIFF

FROM THE FESTIVAL Dear Friends of the Hamptons International Film Festival: Welcome to our 25th year! It’s a milestone worthy of celebration, and we are celebrating by doing what HIFF does best, once again bringing great films to the Hamptons. We are also pleased to present our commemorative book reflecting back on 25 shining years together and looking forward to an even brighter future. Every October for the past 25 years, we have come together to watch amazing films, enjoy conversations with some of the industry’s most fascinating personalities, and celebrate our love of film together. But our festival has become so much more than just a wonderful fall weekend: we now present yearround programming, including our summer documentary series, and sponsor community outreach and education programs, including our Screenwriters Lab. As we look to the future, we aim to expand our year-round programming and initiatives. And we intend to continue to reach every corner and touch every community of the Hamptons.

Alec Baldwin Board Co-Chair

Randy Mastro Board Co-Chair

As HIFF’s current Co-Chairs, we have to acknowledge how we got here. It was our founders—founding Chairs Stuart Suna and Toni Ross, along with founding members Linda Biscardi Fuller and Joe Zicherman—who launched this festival and have since seen it grow into the thriving annual event it has become. Indeed, it is Stuart, who, after nearly two decades as Chair, entrusted us to carry on this great legacy. For us, it’s a labor of love. It’s our commitment to bring together our passion for film and for the Hamptons. We also have to thank our amazing staff, especially our Executive Director, Anne Chaisson, and our Artistic Director, David Nugent. They are the people responsible for putting together this festival and its yearround programming, and all of us are the grateful beneficiaries of their work. Finally, we want to thank you, our friends and sponsors, for supporting us all of these years. We have achieved this 25-year milestone because of you, and we look forward to reaching even greater heights in the coming years. Enjoy the Festival!

When I think about HIFF turning a quarter-century, I think of what that really means—HIFF has finally become an adult! We’ve reached maturity with success and prosperity, and we’re still young enough to become everything we dream to be. This achievement is due to countless souls who were with us from the beginning: Lily Singer, the once high school volunteer who is now our Deputy Director; companies and organizations such as Hampton Jitney, Altour International, The East Hampton Star, Nick & Toni’s, Suffolk County Film Commission, New York State Council of the Arts, Kodak, and Silvercup Studios, who supported us the very first year; locals who have given selflessly of their time and created film programs like Zelda Penzel with our Animal Rights section; staff members who have worked for HIFF for over 18 years, including our events team, Gregory Triana and Ellen Ashenfarb; and Advisory Board members such as Jeff Sharp and Mark Urman, who have dedicated themselves to HIFF’s mission. The list of supporters since then has become immense, and we are celebrating with all of you who come back year after year.

I welcome you on behalf of the entire programming team, whom I am honored to call my colleagues. This hardworking group of smart, committed programmers spent much of their spring and summer indoors watching thousands of films in order to bring you the best films from around the world. Their tireless efforts and enthusiasm continue to inspire me, and I enjoy every day that I have the privilege of working with each of them. In addition, I want to welcome all of the filmmakers making their first appearance at HIFF, and we are proud to share new work from filmmakers whose films we’ve screened in the past, including Martin McDonagh, Guillermo del Toro, Sean Baker, Susan Lacy, Ben & Orson Cummings, Myles Kane & Josh Koury, Michael Haneke, Jonas Carpignano, Ruben Östlund, Ali Asgari, Aki Kaurismäki, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady. On behalf of the entire team, please enjoy these fruits of our labor.

music management and promotions company Dirty Rice Music) and their dog, Dirk Doggler—has embraced the festival’s unique ability to be a world-class event while maintaining a sense of intimacy. “So many festivals try to do too many things at the same time, and we try to take all of our guests collectively from event to event so they are getting to know each other,” says Chaisson, pointing out that HIFF is the only local happening that takes place across every single village simultaneously. It’s also an undertaking that isn’t limited to just one weekend in October. “This year alone, we’ve done 72 events—before the film festival,” she says. “And that’s what we intend to continue doing.” And when the actual festival does kick off, it’s designed to be an inclusive affair. “It offers a little bit for everyone,” says Chaisson. “You can do things for free, you can pay as low as $8 to see a movie and then you can pay a little bit more and experience an opening night screening and party.” The event also offers incredible access to the actors, directors and other Hollywood dignitaries who provide great insight into the world of filmmaking. “You want the audience to meet these people, get to know these people and understand why they made the films they did,” sums up Chaisson. “Most audiences will tell you that’s why they come—because they get to see and experience so much.”

Long before she became Executive Director of the Hamptons International Film Festival, Anne Chaisson loved the event both for the artistry it showcased in darkened theaters and for the dazzling scene that awaited when she walked back out into the light of day. “There’s this amazing nature that surrounds you that enhances the experience,” says Chaisson. “All you want to do is see a really great movie and have a really wonderful conversation about it with someone—and not feel pressured to be stuck inside all day.” After growing up in Louisiana with a “thespian mother who was madly in love with classic black and white movies,” Chaisson started her professional life in sales and marketing but soon discovered a more exhilarating career path when she became an independent movie producer, helping a friend turn his screenplay into a feature film. “I completely changed my career and said, ‘This is what I want to do,’” says Chaisson. “I loved the discipline in moviemaking. I loved the mechanics of making it happen.” Chaisson’s relationship with HIFF—which dates back to 1999—has been multifaceted: “I’ve had films in the festival, I started the advisory board for it, I was a sponsor at one point,” she says. Since taking over the stewardship of HIFF in 2012, Chaisson—who lives in East Hampton year-round with her husband Jeff Gillis (the owner of the 12

also be a screening of I Am Evidence—a documentary about the backlog of rape kits left untested in communities across the U.S.—produced by East Hampton resident Mariska Hargitay, who will be in attendance. “I’m very excited about it,” says Nugent. “That’s going to be a really powerful screening.” In addition to providing an edgy lineup of movies, Nugent also focuses on HIFF’s ability to bring a sense of togetherness to the Hamptons. “I think about the community with all the year-round programming that we do,” he says. And during the festival itself, the “Views from Long Island” programming—including Killer Bees, a documentary about the Bridgehampton Bees basketball team, Wanderland, a narrative film about the misadventures of a Hamptons house sitter, and Strong Island, a documentary chronicling the murder of an African-American man in Suffolk County—shows off a array of East End viewpoints. “Those are three totally different types of films,” says Nugent. “They show the real broad range of stories that can be told out here and that come from out here.” Once the festival gets into full swing, that’s when Nugent keeps an eye out for the telltale signs of success. “Are there are lot of people in the theaters? Do they stay for the Q&As? Do they say, ‘That film was so great, I can’t wait to go back and watch all of her films,’ to me and my colleagues?” he asks. “When those things happen I feel really good.”

If there were a decades-long tracking shot of David Nugent’s professional life—starting with his college and postgraduate film studies, transitioning into his gigs teaching film classes at institutions like MIT and the New School and culminating with his current position as Artistic Director of HIFF—you’d notice a consistent thread connecting each frame. “I just have always loved films,” says Nugent. “I love talking about movies, learning about movies and sharing movies with other people.” As he makes the last-minute programming choices for the 2017 festival, Nugent is relying on his well-honed cinematic sensibilities to pull off another buzz-worthy event. “This will be my 11th festival, and I have a pretty good sense for what audiences like and don’t like out here,” says Nugent, who—along with his wife, Violet Gaynor, co-founder and editorial director of theglow.com, and daughter, Plum—splits his time between New York City and the East End. “Which isn’t to say that we think every film in our festival is something everyone will like,” he adds. “We always have a number of films where we think, ‘This probably won’t go over well, but I hope people see it because it's unlike everything else they’ll see, and we should all shake up our ideas of what films can be.’” This year’s slate of films is particularly provocative and timely—touching on everything from the 2016 presidential election to the worldwide refugee crisis. There will 14

Craig Gillespie’s at turns hilarious and tragic look at the life of Harding (astonishingly realized by Margot Robbie) flips the script on this sensational narrative—following her from the tumultuous relationship with her abusive mother (Allison Janney) to the absurd moments that led to that fateful night in Cobo Arena. Fueled by a razor-sharp script that doesn’t let anyone in Harding’s orbit out of its sights, I, TONYA is an outrageous and surprising look at the players behind the notorious scandal.

Alison Chernick’s documentary ITZHAK examines the life and music of Itzhak Perlman, widely considered one of the world’s greatest living violinists. Exploring the ways in which Perlman’s passion for music allowed him to find a platform for personal expression against tremendous circumstances, Chernick creates a portrait of man whose remarkable will to survive is never removed from his tremendous generosity and humor. Through it all, the discipline we see at work is starkly contrasted with the world we see at home, as a modern Jewish family continues to embrace their heritage against a world of changing expectations. With the same bitingly dark and comedic tone of his previous two films, IN BRUGES and SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS (HIFF 2012), Academy Award® winning writer-director Martin McDonagh returns to feature filmmaking with this wildly entertaining and unpredictable story of a divided community simmering with tension and ready to blow.

A. Milne (Domhnall Gleeson) and his son Christopher Robin (newcomer Will Tilston), whose collection of toys and unbridled imagination inspired the enchanting world of Winnie The Pooh. As the whimsical adventures of this honey-loving bear quickly capture the attention of a traumatized, post-war England, the family suddenly finds themselves swept up in the international success—though not without paying the price that often accompanies such fame. While his mother (Margot Robbie) revels in the spotlight, her son struggles with the abrupt loss of his childhood. AFTER LOUIE 10/7, 8:30 PM, East Hampton UA1 New York Premiere, Narrative, USA, 2017, 100 minutes, English Still reeling from survivor’s guilt in the years following the AIDS epidemic, NYC artist Sam (Emmy®- and Golden Globe®-nominated actor Alan Cumming) spends his days working on a seemingly never-ending video tribute to the partner he lost along the way. While an intimate encounter with a younger man at first seems like just another one-off, it soon forces Sam to re-assess his resentment for a generation he perceives to be oblivious to the political immediacy and pain of his own. Longtime activist and first-time filmmaker Vincent Gagliostro brings a knowing sensitivity to this poignant story of generational difference, all centered around Cumming’s raw and magnetic lead performance. CALL ME BY YOUR NAME 10/6, 6:00 PM, Guild Hall 10/7, 12:30 PM, Bay Street Narrative, Italy/France, 2017, 130 minutes, English/Italian/French As another summer in his family’s Italian villa lazily drifts by for 17-year-old Elio (Timothée Chalamet, Variety’s 10 Actors To Watch), 24-year-old Oliver (Armie Hammer) seems at first to be little more than the latest in a long line of his father’s (Michael Stuhlbarg) research assistants. However, as the weeks wind on, a tender connection develops between the two in Luca Guadagnino’s sun-soaked masterpiece. Refining the stylistic splendor of his previous work into a lush exploration of desire and intimacy, CALL ME BY YOUR NAME is an intoxicating reminder of the tentative gestures and fleeting moments that mark our first steps into the unknown, and their lasting ability to soften the sting of changing seasons. ICON Beloved, brilliant Julie Andrews talks with Purist about preparedness for superstardom, her favorite things, and her Lifetime Achievement Award, to be presented by Alec Baldwin on October 7 at the Hamptons International Film Festival. BY CRISTINA CUOMO

CC: Of the films you’ve made, what are your favorites?

CRISTINA CUOMO: You have a quote on your site: “The amateur works until they get something right—the professional works until they can't go wrong.”

JA: I loved making Victor/Victoria because it was such a breakthrough at the time. I loved making S.O.B., a very dark comedy that my husband also wrote and directed, and a little film he made called That’s Life!. An early film I made about the war, The Americanization of Emily, was written by Paddy Chayefsky and shot in black and white. But obviously, you can’t not include The Sound of Music. Thoroughly Modern Millie was wacky and adorable to make.

JULIE ANDREWS: It was something that was taught to me by my singing teacher many years ago, and I’ve never forgotten it. CC: Is that a motto to live by? JA: It’s certainly something to aim for if you want to be a part of this wonderful thing called show biz. Opportunities will come when you least expect them, so do your homework. If you want to be good, then keep working at it, and be ready.

CC: What has been your experience with the Hamptons International Film Festival?

CC: What has been the best surprise in your career?

JA: Blake [Edwards, her late husband] was honored once quite a long time ago, which was very flattering. I am very honored to be honored this year. I was thrilled when they wanted to run the movie [Victor /Victoria] and chat a bit.

JA: My first big break was a big step. I was a young singer, just learning how to sing, but I had a rather unusual range, and the first show I ever did in London catapulted me into public awareness. It was just a revue in a London theater, but it did bring me to everyone’s attention. The next big step was going to Broadway, which was a huge learning experience. And then the third step was going to Hollywood. They seemed to come in those categories; I didn’t mix them all up at once. I toured endlessly around England when I was a kid, and then my teens. Then six years or more on Broadway. And then, very fortunately, Disney came calling, so to speak.

CC: How do you feel about being a legend? JA: I don’t think about it. Truly, I don’t. I’m a mum most and foremost. I have five kids and 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, and that keeps me pretty busy. I just feel very fortunate. I’m a very lucky lady, with a lot of hard work thrown in. CC: “My Favorite Things” is one of my favorite songs. What are some of your favorite things?

CC: Has there been a preferred medium?

JA: Oh, easy. Believe it or not, pruning my roses in my garden, my lovely two dogs that keep me company and take care of me, my family. Not in any order. Music of all kinds—I love classical most of all, but I love jazz and I love my own songs, anything with Jerome Kern, Stephen Sondheim.

JA: No. If you think about it, on stage all of you is present and showing, and you start at the beginning and finish at the end of every performance. In film, it’s close-ups and medium shots and long shots, and you can film out of sequence. In fact, one always films out of sequence. They are very different mediums, but both are hugely delicious and satisfying. I love working with an audience, because that’s something you do literally for the one performance, and it’s shared between you and that particular audience. They don’t know that you—hopefully—were good the night before, or might be good the night after. They want that particular performance for themselves, and so that’s the kind of shared thing you do. Film is probably a lot more careful, but a lot more of a gamble. You don’t have the chance to run it through from start to finish, and you pray that you’ve made the right choices. But it is exciting.

CC: You have a rose named after you. JA: It’s a small, very English rose and it doesn't do well in America, sadly—the climate is not suitable, or something. Thank God that didn’t apply to me. CC: What lasting impact do you hope to have? JA: As you grow, as you age, as you learn, I think I’ve discovered that it’s the giving that matters. I don't think about lasting impact. That’s for other people to decide, but what I do is give, and make people feel great. That’s my delight. 29

NEW YORK PREMIERE, DOCUMENTARY FEATURE, USA, 2017, 54 minutes, English

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE, USA, 2017, 90 minutes, English Culled from hundreds of hours of recently discovered 16mm archival footage, Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen crafts an enchanting portraitof legendary primatologist and activist Jane Goodall when her revolutionary work was still in its infancy. Shot by National Geographic during her first encounter with the chimpanzees of Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park, we witness the transformative period when Goodall first began to develop the methodology that would soon make her a household name. Scored by illustrious composer Philip Glass and featuring eye-opening new interviews with Goodall, Morgen has created the definitive account of how this maverick scientist became the world’s most beloved conservationist.

A moving meditation on a man’s crisis of faith, THE LAST PIG follows Bob Comis as he concludes his last season as a pig farmer. Peppered with reflections on his decade with the pigs, farmer Bob’s introspective voiceover guides us through the changing seasons on the farm, and the images, often filmed at ground-level, merge us with the drove. Director Allison Argo masterfully gives weight to what at first appear to be mundane daily rituals, and as an ethical question swells for farmer Bob, it does for us as well. In this intimate portrayal of a man at a crossroads, we are welcomed into the sacred moment of choice. Desperate to join the ranks of the men of his Romany family, 14-year-old Pio finds his initiation into adulthood unexpectedly fast-tracked with the imprisonment of his father and older brother, as he gradually involves himself in the same criminal world that placed them there. Executive produced by Martin Scorsese and directed with a remarkably atmospheric touch that refuses to settle into the expected tropes of the genre, A CIAMBRA is another nuanced look at the difficulty of escaping a life of crime in a community defined by it, confirming Carpignano as a undeniable international force. Headstrong, impulsive, and willing to bend the rules when necessary, Oleg frequently runs afoul of the new management that is trying to implement absurdly strict new rules that prioritize bureaucracy over the patients’ well-being. As their professional and personal lives collide, Oleg and Katya must deconstruct their familiar spaces in order to rebuild their marriage in Khlebnikov’s intriguing commentary on the anatomy of a relationship. Using archival images found from the collection of a rural photographer, text excerpted from the journal of a Jewish doctor, and songs recorded from the nationalistic anthems of the time, Jude’s cinematic essay provides a harrowing yet captivating account of the rise of nationalism and antisemitism in Romania during the 1930s-40s. STUDENT SCREENING & TALKBACK UNITED NATIONS PARTNERSHIP Addressing Migration, Diversity, and Social Inclusion (Middle School and High School Programs) 2017 is the third year that HIFF will welcome middle and high school students from across the East End for a program addressing human rights, inclusion, and migrant integration. The students will view films made by children and young adults from all over the world, chosen in conjunction with the Plural + (“Plural Plus”) Film Festival, a joint venture of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the International Organization for Migration. The high school program includes a panel discussion with someof these young international filmmakers and United Nations and other world peacemaking representatives. Also for the third year, East Hampton Middle School teachers Cara Nelson, Rita Greene, and Margaret Ryan-Metz have integrated this program into their 7th grade curriculum. They will use these films as inspiration to their students, who will make films of their own—mostly about diversity, acceptance, and human/ animal rights. Visiting British student filmmaker Awais Ali (front and center) gets students to pose like cinematographers at the 2016 festival.

CELEBRATING SILVER

PAINTING: COPYRIGHT DAVID SALLE; DESIGN: ANTHONY MCCALL ASSOCIATES

In honor of the Hamptons International Film Festival’s 25th anniversary, local merchants, film lovers and independent moviemakers all reflect on the star-studded annual event that brings the community together throughout the East End.

GARY WINICK (producer, who passed away in 2011, as quoted in the HIFF 15th Anniversary catalogue): The first year of the festival, I had the privilege of showing my film Sweet Nothing, starring Michael Imperioli and Mira Sorvino. In 1988, my next film, The Tic Code, starring the late Gregory Hines, won the Audience Award. And in 2000, I showed one of the first DV feature films ever made, Sam the Man, with Fisher Stevens and Annabella Sciorra. The film was the impetus for the creation of my film production company, Indigent. This was the most important turning point of my career, and the HIFF was part of it. What stands out most fondly in my memory of the festival was back in the early years, when [Nick & Toni’s] Jeff Salaway would stand in front of the UA Theater all day, taking tickets. Jeff Salaway and Toni Ross created the HIFF out of their love for the movies, the people who make them, and the people who watch—they knew how much this festival would enrich their community.

guys, so it was quite fun, full of fond memories and beautiful women. What was even cooler, I stayed at Gary’s parents’ house in the Hamptons. It was so local. JANET O’BRIEN (owner, Janet O’Brien Caterers + Events): All the first parties were beautiful big tents and live bands in the parking lot at Nick & Toni’s. I had just started my catering company. The festival was really catching on, so I offered to do the hospitality, which at the time was at the Palm, out on Main Street. I’d get there really early in the morning and do bagels, set up coffee and muffins and croissants and things like that. I have this vision of me running across Main Street with baskets of bagels, against the traffic—the bagel queen. MICHAEL CINQUE (owner, Amagansett Wine & Spirits): We’ve been the official liquor sponsor-supporter from day one. It’s funny, because Jeff and Toni were friends. I’ll never forget them calling and saying, “Would you mind putting up a couple cases of white and a case of red, and a few bottles of vodka?” I said, “Sure.” Next year, it was like 10 cases of white and five cases of red and five cases of vodka. Twenty-five years later, it’s like half my warehouse.

FISHER STEVENS (actor, producer, director): Gary Winick and I were kind of enfants terribles around the festival in 2009, when we screened our film Sam the Man [which Winick directed and co-produced]. We were wild and crazy 79

AUSTIN HANDLER (co-founder, Mabley Handler Interior Design): My wife [Jennifer Mabley] and I are huge film fans. We moved out here from the city 15 years ago, so as soon as we realized there was a film festival here, 10, 12 years ago, we attended. Five years ago the festival asked us to design the VIP green room, and the stage setups for the post-film Q&A sessions. That was fantastic. We are thrilled to be able to bring our expertise and support the festival.

Antonio Campos, Amy Redford, Emily Abt and Andrew Hunt. Some of course went on to be amazing, successful filmmakers—a proud moment for Bloomingdale’s. GEOFFREY LYNCH (President, Hampton Jitney): I am proud of Hampton Jitney’s support of the Hamptons International Film Festival over the past 25 years. We support the festival today for the same reason we did 25 years ago—it’s an event outside of the summer season that brings people to this region, and helps provide a bump in business activity just before the onset of the winter months.

JANET O’BRIEN: For at least the past six years, we’ve been blessed to be the guardians of the green room at Guild Hall. We do a light bar with wine, and very minimal, beautiful food—tiny little sandwiches, beautiful cheese boards. It’s like I’m on this fabulous work vacation at Guild Hall for four days. After all the years of running with bagels, I’m in the green room and I’m there to have the loveliest of times.

BILL COLLAGE: The festival has expanded, so it’s not just one weekend in the fall. There’s year-round stuff going on that people can plug into—both as creators or as consumers. For over a decade, I’ve been involved with the Screenwriters Lab, which happens in April. They asked me to be a mentor. Every year there are mentors—there’s a contest, and if you win, you get to spend a weekend with professional screenwriters. The mentors review the work, and those screenplays go on to have a life. I was lucky to mentor Sara Colangelo, who wrote a script called Little Accidents, which she was going to direct as her first feature. When she made the movie, starring Elizabeth Banks and Boyd Holbrook, she invited me to see a cut and give some thoughts. It was great to see the whole creative process, starting with her having an idea, the execution of the idea, then making it a film, through post-production, and then the great reception she’s had for it. The Hamptons International Film Festival literally incubated and brought that movie out.

AUSTIN HANDLER: Last year, I was in the green room in between films, and Aaron Eckhart was there waiting to leave for the airport to get a flight back to London. We ended up chatting, he and I and a couple of other people in the room, for over an hour. It was a casual, flowing conversation about real estate, design and travel. It was a really nice experience of connecting with someone in the film industry, who you see on screen, in a way that felt very natural. BILL COLLAGE (screenwriter): For me, there are two simple questions for anyone who wants to build a life in the film industry, while living full-time on the East End of Long Island: First, is there a sustainable community of people who will nurture, inspire and challenge each other? Second, is there a passionate group of patrons who would support such a community? Without the Hamptons International Film Festival, the answer to both is no. You can live and work out here in the film industry, but you’re disconnected without some sort of nexus. The Hamptons International Film Festival is a nexus of people who want to create film on the East End of Long Island with passionate consumers and critics of cinema.

JANET O’BRIEN: Another year, Anjelica Huston had an amazing movie that she directed, Bastard Out of Carolina. As I walked out of the theater, she happened to be walking right beside me. Both of us having been brought up in Ireland, we went straight into this deep conversation as we walked only 10 steps, right beside each other. That was a brilliant experience for me, just to bond with her for about 10 seconds over such a strong movie. Of course, the minute she started talking to me, her Irish accent came home.

ANNE KEATING (consultant, corporate philanthropy/ projects, Bloomingdale’s): The HIFF is an important cultural event that brings together not only the local community and the summer residents, but national and international visitors to the East End. In the years Bloomingdale’s has been supporting the Festival, 2009 was a highlight. We had a “Lights Camera Fashion” marketing campaign that included five shorts (BFlix) that we produced with Young Indies Films. The short films, created by up-andcoming directors and writers, were shown at the Festival with a talkback with the directors including Barry Jenkins,

ED BURNS (actor and filmmaker): Being a Long Islander, and specifically having spent a ton of time in the Hamptons, it was very special for me to bring my second film, She’s the One, there in the summer of 1996 for an outdoor screening. It was especially poignant being embraced by the East End cultural arts community. BOB BALABAN (actor and filmmaker): The festival was still inching forward on baby steps in 1994 when my film The Last Good Time opened the festival. I remember being 81

favorites, The Artist, with other movie lovers...hearing from the actors and directors themselves, like my friends Bruce Weber and Alec Baldwin, who spoke in fascinating detail about their careers...bumping into friends who love the same movies as you…all combine to create a glorious event that makes HIFF the place to be each fall.

ED HARRIS (actor and filmmaker): Having the opportunity to film portions of Pollock at the Pollock-Krasner house and getting to screen the film at the Hamptons International Film Festival remains a highlight of my professional life.

Eric Fischl poster, 2002

RICHARD KIND (actor): They have script readings, which bring out really great talents. One year, I was able to act with Melissa Leo. That’s just thrilling to me. She’d won the Academy Award, she’s a great actress, and we had an exciting script. Later on, I worked with her on a TV show [I’m Dying Up Here]. Of course a lot of those scripts don’t go anywhere. But you read something, go wow—maybe somebody’s in the audience who might take an interest in it and might produce. It’s all a you-scratch-my-back, I’ll-scratch-yours, type of thing, and work can come from it.

Barbara Kruger, 2003

BILL COLLAGE: One year I was talking with Bobby Flay, who was a judge that year, and he didn’t realize just how many movies he was going to have to see. I think it was probably a little exhausting. FISHER STEVENS: The international aspect of HIFF is cool—I’ve hung out with directors from other countries, and they’re blown away by the beauty of the Hamptons. The local people, the volunteers, are so into the movies, and taking you around. It’s nice to spend the weekend hanging out on Main Street in East Hampton, amongst filmmakers and local people.

FISHER STEVENS: Screening The Cove in 2009 at the HIFF was a turning point for me, because that’s when I started to focus much more intensely on producing and directing documentaries. The Q&A with Alec Baldwin for The Cove at Guild Hall was memorable. I remember being shocked at the knowledge and the homework he did to get the audience riled up to support the cause of the film. He pretty much had the entire audience donating to the Oceanic Preservation Society by the end of the screening. At last year’s festival, my screening of Before the Flood was amazing—the Hamptons audience was so engaged.

Cindy Sherman, 2006

CHRISTIE BRINKLEY (model, actor, author): Seeing Oscar-winning movies like Slumdog Millionaire and one of my 82

AUSTIN HANDLER: The festival does a panel of short films. I always try and take our sons to see the short films aimed at a younger audience. So we were heading to see it one year— three or four years ago—and as we’re walking past the red carpet area, the step-and-repeat where they photograph the filmmakers and directors, my youngest son, Wesley, saw it and said, “Dad, Look! Famous people paper!” He recognized that it’s the backdrop that’s always behind actors and filmmakers at parties and red carpet events. I took a photo of them in front of the “famous people paper.” They felt like they were stars themselves. It’s just something about that magic of bringing a Hollywood-esque red carpet event to what’s a somewhat sleepy town—at least in October it is—to the point where a little kid feels like he’s at a Hollywood premiere.

surprised and excited when it won best film. It rained the whole time. The awards were given out in a large white waterlogged tent. Mostly I remember it was so wet and muddy in there, I nearly killed myself sloshing and sliding up to the dais to accept mine.

HIFF JR. EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES

SUPPORT PROVIDED BY

For the 25th year in a row, HIFF brought an enlightening slate of movies into the lives of hundreds of curious and vibrant young Hamptonites. From summer filmmaking camps to year-round screenings and clubs in East End schools, HIFF Jr. has exposed thousands of students to a world of diverse realities, while empowering them to view films as an accessible medium for creativity, and for making their voices heard. This year saw yet another expansion of HIFF Jr. as we established widespread scholarships and welcomed several new schools into our United Nations and Compassion, Justice and Animal Rights programs.

SCHOLARSHIPS This year, HIFF presented five $1000 cash scholarships to graduating seniors in East End high schools. Winners additionally receive Filmmaker Discovery passes for the 2017 festival. These awards are provided thanks to underwriting by The Hilaria and Alec Baldwin Foundation. 2017 Scholarship Winners: Sarahi Negrete — Bridgehampton High School, Gaby Arevalo — East Hampton High School, Eve Bishop — Pierson High School, Sag Harbor, Amanda Mintz — Ross School, Sophie Rhine — Southampton High School

For the 9th year in a row, HIFF produced summer film camps for ages 7-16, in partnership with LTV (Channels 20 & 22), Guild Hall of East Hampton, and Southampton Arts Center. Each camp is a week of fun and creative time well spent toward a focused goal: collaboratively developing, writing, acting in, producing, filming, editing, and scoring a final film, which we show on the big screen at the end of each session. The camps provide a thorough introduction to digital filmmaking, so that kids can make their own projects for fun, passion, or to help launch a future career! 92

A Component of HIFF’s Signature Program (Elementary School Program)

Based on the Festival’s Signature program, HIFF curated two compassion-oriented “red carpet” film screenings whereby student filmmakers shared their work and participated on panels in front of hundreds of 4th and 5th graders at The Springs and John M. Marshall Elementary Schools in East Hampton. Shown alongside professionally-made films were several by the East Hampton Middle School students who were inspired by the HIFF Jr. United Nations program, which takes place during the annual film festival each year.
