EDITOR’S LETTER The tranquil sunny haze, the clinging smoke, the vapor, Spiritual, airy insects, humming on gossamer wings, Shimmer of waters, with fish in them—the cerulean above... From Walt Whitman’s poem “Warble for Lilac-Time” Most celebrations of nature evoke a literary punctuation—a poem, an expression of art, a great work of literature—and of course, an appetite. Literature and food often go hand in hand, the way a succulent oyster inspired Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There: “‘O Oysters, come and walk with us!’ The Walrus did beseech. ‘A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk, Along the briny beach.’” We write and eat to exalt the best things in life—to feed different kinds of hunger: in the belly, the heart, the soul. So, at PURIST we created our Portable Purist Food & Drink guide as a nod to this idyllic place where so much has been sown and reaped, where appetites are sated and memories created. Speaking of whetting the appetite, we highlight some of our favorite international offerings too, like Wainscott’s Il Mulino for exceptional Italian cuisine and its many offerings of “vongole” (clams); French bistro fare from Pierre’s in Bridgehampton and Sagaponack; and new Mexican-inspired spots like K Pasa in Sag Harbor and Coche Comedor in Amagansett. Read on, Eat on!

BON APPÉTIT PIERRE’S MARKET SAGG MAIN HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE CRUISING THROUGH SAGAPONACK.
By Nancy Kane
A bright-blue beach cruiser bicycle pulls up in front of Pierre’s Market on Sagg Main, about halfway to the beach in what some would call the epicenter of the Hamptons. It’s Pierre, who has ridden over from his eponymous restaurant, a local favorite, on Bridgehampton’s Main Street. A small crowd gathers on the comfy park benches outside the market and Sagaponack’s colloquial post office. Shouting out “Hello” and “How are you,” and stopping to chat with regular customers, Pierre knows every one of them. From the affluent weekenders to the locals, they come to this market because there is something for all (at every price point). Authentic, fresh, French-inspired food is no longer only accessible at white-tablecloth restaurants. Pierre’s Market has it all wrapped up. FOR THE HOSTS AND HOSTESSES: Guests decide to stay the weekend? Why not bring home a fresh, succulent roast chicken, with sides to spare? Pierre’s famous flourless chocolate cake is perfect for dessert. Don’t forget Sunday breakfast—pick up a loaf of Bao’s Dream (named for Pierre’s beloved dog) in addition to the best croissants in town. FOR THE BEACH-BOUND GANG: Sandwiches, sure, are all packed up and ready, but also try the delightful tartines (Parisienne, Provençale, Tomato Basil or Smoked Salmon) or the delectable new 24 THE PORTABLE PURIST
meal-in-a-jar: the Quinoa Jar (quinoa, dried apricots, onion, feta cheese, spinach) or Chicken Curry (with almonds, shredded coconut, cherry tomatoes, grapes apple kale and corn). Perfect for picnics. FOR THE HEALTH-CONSCIOUS: There are lots of healthy choices, but the organic smoothies are a favorite among the body-conscious, as are the delicious yogurt, fruit and granola parfaits. FOR POST-SURF: Après beach, surfers who work up an appetite find hearty hot food in back (think classics like quiche and ratatouille plus madeto-order omelets and sandwiches) or pick up the hanger steak and tomato tartine with Moroccan dressing. And splurge on a bag of cookies (chocolate chip, vanilla and chocolate sables, palmier and oatmeal)—you’ve earned it. FOR THE KIDS: Pastries are a hallmark of Pierre’s and little ones love the array of choices from almond toast and chocolate twists to pineapple muffins. The mini sandwiches—egg salad, and ham and cheese—are just the right size, and the homemade ice cream is a must. 542 Sagg Main St., Sagaponack, 631.296.8400, pierresbridgehampton.com

AFTER THE SUCCESS OF VARIOUS LOCATIONS IN NYC AND MIAMI, ORGANIC CAFÉ DR SMOOD HAS OFFICIALLY PLANTED ITS ROOTS IN EAST HAMPTON.
By Charlotte DeFazio
Speaking of fix, there’s a whole section dedicated to caffeine fiends, making it a go-to spot for your morning brew— but those not on the coffee grind can check out the selection of teas or specialty drinks (the Golden Mylk Latte features turmeric, black pepper and raw honey 36 THE PORTABLE PURIST
elixir). Kids will love the organic shakes or “Smoodys” (smoothies), and plant-based dieters approve of the Mushroom Jackfruit sandwich (jackfruit, oyster mushroom, protein mayo, confit tomato, romaine lettuce, Himalayan salt and black pepper). For a quick snack—and a nice alternative to the meaty kind—try the Spicy Eggplant Jerky. And don’t worry; they haven’t forgotten everyone’s avocado toast obsession. (There are five different types.) On the Hamptons flagship, CEO Karl Finegan says, “So many of our customers spend a large amount of their time on the East End and we felt East Hampton was ideally located within a wide range of fitness locations with year-round residents closely situated nearby. It is a very special town and we are delighted to be a part of the community providing the cleanest, healthiest food around.” Aside from giving good grub, they’ll get you on a top-notch detox program packaged for one to five days at three levels—beginner (for first-timers and those needing a higher daily caloric intake), intermediate, and advanced (lowest calorie option for intense, fast detoxing). A world of nourishment awaits. 36 Newtown Lane, East Hampton, 631.251.9403, drsmood.com
COURTESY OF DR SMOOD
As soon as you walk into a Dr Smood, you know you’ll be able to pat yourself on the back upon leaving. With the superfood-full, dairy-, refined sugar-, preservativeand pesticide-free menu, it’s near impossible to order an unhealthy item there. Whatever superfood you’re currently raving about—from mesquite and moringa to spirulina and red maca—chances are, they’ve got it. The extensive list of options was created with numerous health benefits in mind, and is broken down into six moods: beauty, detox, energy, health, immunity and power. If you’re perplexed by all the choices, let your “Smood mood” be known and the staff will be sure to fulfill your fix.
