EDITOR’S LETTER During my recent family trip to the Serengeti, Tarangire and Manyara National Parks in Tanzania, I felt a profound sense of the beginning of everything. My senses were heightened by the ‘slow safari’ experience: from the first time I laid eyes on a giraffe at arm’s length to our excursion into the Hadzabe territory, a disappearing culture and one of the oldest tribes in the world. Old values are renewed when one sees up close how climate change contributes to animals’ extinction—and how the fewer material objects a tribe has, the happier they seem. Albert Einstein understood the need for a return to nature when he wrote, “A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.” The largess of Africa is pure inspiration at its very best.

In our last issue of Purist, The Portable Purist’s mother, we wrote about the importance of earthing—spreading one’s bare toes in the earth in order to stay connected with nature in an effort to slow down. In fact, in every issue, we talk about slowing down as the secret to true happiness. In this high-speed culture we live in today, it takes discipline to pause, let go, and clear one’s calendar. When one takes these steps, then every wellness retreat in this comprehensive guide will serve a greater purpose: resetting. That is the thread connecting all our recommendations. SPRUCE PEAK: THE SKI CAPITAL OF THE EAST THE LITTLE VERMONT MOUNTAIN TOWN OF STOWE HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR ITS SKIING AND HOSPITALITY FOR WELL NEAR A CENTURY AND REMAINS TRUE TO ITS TITLE.

As far back as 1937, Stowe was declared to have “the best skiing in the East” by The Boston Globe and in the early 1940s, townspeople built what was then the longest chairlift in the United States at 6,300 feet in length. In the decades that followed, the Kennedys and other well-heeled Bostonians and New Yorkers made “the Ski Capital of the East” their holiday destination, many of them buying homes and some putting down permanent local roots. None other than the famed French ski champion Jean-Claude Killy journeyed to Stowe to race in the 1960s; and native son Billy Kidd would carry Stowe’s name to an Olympic gold in 1970.

Remote by New England standards (Stowe is a little over an hour south of the Canadian border), snowier and with more of a rugged alpine landscape and challenging skiing terrain than most of its New England counterparts, Stowe was and remains something of Eastern skiing’s crown jewel. What’s more, it’s a picture-perfect, vibrant, working community, with town hall and the Community Church on Main Street, four productive dairy farms, home to the legendary singing von Trapps, good public schools, and a thriving business community. For decades ski bums have flocked here to work, ski, raise families. Snowboard pioneers and

Burton owners Donna and Jake Carpenter moved to Stowe in the 1990s and raised their three boys.

But as a destination in the constellation of American skiing, Stowe’s star was fading by the 1990s—the ski world was growing crowded and competitive. By the time my family and I arrived here in 1998—when I took the helm of the local newspaper—the ski area was operating with antiquated lifts and snowmaking, and its only lodging of drab ’70s-style buildings was far from the base area. Rather than see its investment whither, Stowe’s owner, the huge insurance company AIG, began a massive $500 million-plus development and improvements project. By 2017, with all the major pieces completed, Stowe was a place transformed.

Where once stood a parking area, woods and a few ancient base facilities, the Village at Spruce Peak—with its five-star luxury hotel and spa, restaurants, shops, outdoor skating rink, exclusive private club, golf course, indoor climbing wall, stylish mountain homes and more—hums with activity.

Most importantly for skiers and snowboarders, AIG installed four new lifts, wall-to-wall, top-to-bottom snowmaking and widened a few of the classic runs.

the top of American skiing, but it’s also drawn new Stowe homeowners, most of them from the New York and Boston areas. “It’s the best skiing in the East, no question,” says John Hancock Investments CEO and President Andrew Arnott, an avid and advanced skier who moved part-time to Stowe from Boston with his wife and children in 2002. “The new snowmaking, the grooming, but also the skiing that is possible beyond what you see on the trail maps. That’s what distinguishes this place.”

You don’t hear much anymore about Stowe’s former reputation for being “too far and too cold.” New York corporate lawyer Bill Miller grew up skiing in New England; he and his wife wanted that for their three teenage boys. The family was among the first guests at the five-star 370-room Stowe Mountain Lodge when it opened seven years ago. “The view, the amenities, that

was it—we were sold,” Miller said. The family bought a condo in the lodge shortly afterward, and this year they closed on one of the resort’s newly finished townhouses (whose prices range between $1.5 and $2 million). “I love the extra distance from the city,” Miller says. “You really feel away when you’re up here.” If Miller needs to shorten the trip (a six-hour drive), a new commuter airline, Tradewind Aviation, now operates between White Plains Airport and Stowe. “I can leave my house [in Rye, New York] at 2:30PM and be at dinner at the lodge at 7:30.”

Miller is among almost 400 new owners at Spruce Peak— entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, people in finance who’re seeking a comfortable escape for their active families.

“We’re focused on family,” Spruce Peak Realty President Sam Gaines told me before Christmas. “It’s about multiple generations gathering here to have fun in the mountains.”

Vail scored two in a row with locals: They love the new pass prices (and the fact that Stowe season passes work at any of Vail’s other resorts), which Vail astonishingly slashed by nearly 50 percent; and the new mountain president is a skier, a really good skier. He started his career in the business as an instructor, earning him instant credibility in the hard-core ski town.

Almost every wave demanded tube time, surfer-speak for the daredevil ecstasy of riding inside the curl of the wave. It was also big enough that if you mishandled those few seconds you risked getting rag-dolled across the reef.

Thomas’ adventure began a decade ago. A surfer who grew up in Hawaii, he went into law and eventually private equity in New York and California. In 2008, he found himself on a surf charter boat in the Maldives surrounded by eager well-to-do surfers like him. “I had this moment on that trip,” Thomas, who splits his time between Manhattan and Sausalito, California, told me recently. “I looked around and saw the fun and the opportunity. So many people want this kind of special experience, adventure: uncrowded waves in beautiful places…. It’s a romantic notion we all have, to wander the world and discover magic places.” In the ensuing eight years Thomas’s Pegasus Lodges has purchased and built eight boutique surf resorts around the world in Indonesia, the South Pacific, British Columbia and the Caribbean.

At G.T.’s that day a set loomed on the horizon.

Typically, I wheeled around and caught the first one.

Then came a misstep, as I was pitched headlong into the impact zone and dragged through the whitewater.

Seconds later, as I detected a new reef tattoo blooming on my knee, I looked up to see my son Angie racing across the face of a wave then ducking into the tube.

He disappeared and reemerged, and with a touch of matador’s swagger, arced out of the danger zone and threw me a smile. We’d come to the other side of the world for that. And there would be more. Rates
