One celebrity who uses her voice about women’s rights over their bodies is our cover star, Jennifer Aniston. Voicing her opinion, the actor wrote on her Instagram in a now-famous quote calling out the Texas law overturning reproductive rights: “I repeat…no uterus, no opinion.” We are so proud to feature this trailblazer in career and in conscience. Outlaw, indeed.

EDITOR ’S LETTER @cristinacuomo @thepurist 12

TAKING ACTION

I recently watched an HBO documentary called The Janes about a group of underground women, “outlaws” as it were, who risked everything in the late ’60s and early ’70s to counsel women seeking abortion. Underground. Outlaws. Defying church and state. It seemed like a different century to me, because my generation was spared from this depressing prospect. Now, my generation of parents has to deal with the heartbreaking thought of having left our daughters in a worse position. This issue is dedicated to the women who are fostering the ideas that give us hope for the future. Today, one month after Roe v. Wade was overturned, polls indicate that overwhelmingly this country does not think abortion should be banned. Early this August, the state of Kansas voted by a wide margin in favor of keeping the right to abortion in the state constitution. In the rst month following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, more than 20% of states—all in the South and Midwest—banned abortion completely or implemented a six-week ban. The latest research from The Guttmacher Institute shows that by July 24, the number of clinics offering abortions in 11 states alone dropped from 71 to 28. These clinic closures will further deepen inequities in access to health care. As Jessica Yellin, founder of “News Not Noise,” shares in her interview with me in this issue, “Women are being denied health care, the right to control their own destiny, basic human dignity because of the Dobbs ruling. None of that squares with the values and natural law tradition that birthed democracy.”

Make abortion rights your top voting issue when selecting candidate.a

Also following this issue’s theme of “Women: Our Body Our Choice,” Annelise Peterson writes in “A Woman’s Scorn” to advocate for expanding the de nition of selfcompassion to encompass “a erce, action-oriented energy that protects ourselves and others, while fostering justice and change.” Constitutional law expert Melissa Murray, speaking with Cathrine White in “Lead With Love,” recommends a pragmatic focus: “Think about how to stem this tide by turning out pro-choice voters in droves in subsequent elections.“ Columbia University professor of psychiatry Kelly Posner Gerstenhaber, in “How to Acknowledge Mental Health Concerns Following Roe v. Wade,” reminds us to be present for one another in challenging times: “The decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is tragic, and we may potentially feel the harmful repercussions of this decision for decades. We must be vigilant about one another’s mental health, and provide real support when needed.”

There are advocacy measures we can take: Make this your top voting issue when selecting a candidate and let them know it is. The Constitution does not guarantee a woman the same rights as men, and it’s time to change that.

THE POWER OF BEING

Simple, actionable steps to stay grounded in tumultuous times. BY DONNA D’CRUZ

Just BEing…

Assume the mantle of love in the face of righteous anger and irritation... Breathe out. Breathe in… Assume the virtue of forgiveness when unforgivable things are done… Breathe out. Breathe in… Choose the harder option of patience with those who inspire impatience in you... Breathe out. Breathe in… Choose kindly speech with those who may richly deserve the opposite… Breathe out. All this requires daily commitment and practice, but here’s what Shakespeare says via Hamlet: “For use can almost change the stamp of nature, And master even the devil, or throw him out, With wondrous potency.” Sending you all love and light during these times. donnadcruz.com; IG @donnadcruz1; Thursdays 5PM EST with @cristinacuomo on IG LIVE.

Practice love, compassion and forgiveness daily till it becomes a habit and easier over time. By no means a simple task, but rather, a Herculean one comparable to cleaning out the Augean stables. Are you ready to try these steps?

The recent years have left an indelible thumbprint on our psyches and changed us all. Many of us have been affected to our core, have been vexed and stressed to the outer limits of our being. Many have had lives torn apart by personal loss in addition to seeing businesses and nancial stability upended. How, then, to navigate thisOnetime?way forward may just be with the matchless and eminently sensible advice of that eternal Prince of Denmark, Hamlet: “Assume a virtue if you have it not.”

The Hopi Prophecy’s language transcends metaphor by asking, “Where is your water?” Weary of juggling so much in the teeth of so many looming existential crises? It is quite the daily challenge and practice to keep on keeping on, all the while nurturing body, soul and mind. And that’s our own body, soul and mind, let alone those of our tribe members. We’ve tuned in to the adage about turning life’s lemons into fresh lemonade, but sometimes, don’t you want to close up that little ol’ lemonade stand for a while? Perhaps it’s time to lay down the wearisome burden of “doing” and allow ourselves to be immersed in the powerful playfulness of “being.”

I had the privilege of accompanying renowned conservationist James Robertson, whose invitation to see Lugard, the elephant with the heaviest tusks in Africa, came with instructions: Follow behind, and don’t speak unless it is urgent. James told me that if anything happens, he would step between the elephant and me. We’d silently woven through the thorny brush of Tsavo National Park until we found Lugard, watching in awe as colossal tusks upended trees and bushes like weeds. Suddenly, I’m not sure if a twig snapped or the wind changed; Lugard lifted his head, stopped eating and stared at us. He ared his enormous ears, a signal that he was no longer comfortable, and took a step forward. James moved toward Lugard and began communicating in the most incredible elephant language, making low, guttural, rumbling sounds. At the same time, he gently spoke to Lugard: “Easy boy.” “It’s OK.” After a tense ve minutes, Lugard put his head down and resumed grazing. I was in Kenya shooting Emergence , a documentary on the super tuskers of Tsavo. Super tuskers are male bull elephants whose tusks are so large they touch the ground; each appendage weighs well over 100 pounds. An estimated 21 super tuskers exist on the planet, nine of them in Tsavo, many of them reaching the end of their life span of approximately 55 years. Fortunately, 32 male bull elephants possessing the tusker gene and four female tuskers, known as “iconic cows,” have been identi ed in Tsavo. With protection, there is an opportunity for these elephants to breed. The documentary sheds light on these rare elephants, the challenges they face, and the work dedicated humans are doing to protect them. Empowers Africa, where I am a trustee,

THE SUPER TUSKERS

On the trail of a spectacular species of elephants in Kenya. BY MARTHA McGUINNESS

An estimated 21 super tuskers exist on the planet, nine of them in Tsavo, Kenya.

He continues to navigate the effects of climate change, currently living through the worst drought the eastern Horn of Africa has seen in four decades. We were fortunate to have Nicholas Haller spend eight days with our crew. Nicholas is chief operations of cer and chief pilot of Tsavo Trust, a eld-based organization created to protect and ensure the propagation of the super tuskers.

Founded in 2013, Tsavo Trust employs 36 rangers who patrol the park daily, removing snares and traps, arresting poachers and maintaining the park’s ecosystem and infrastructure. The organization works in conjunction with Kenya Wildlife Service, but if it weren’t for Tsavo Trust, the big tuskers in the park would not exist today. As the shoot came to an end, I felt melancholy about saying goodbye. A bond had developed in our shared experience and commitment to this project. I was inspired by our talented crew, and by the work of Tsavo Trust. But most of all, I was inspired by Lugard. His strength and will to survive is evidence of the opportunity we have to protect super tuskers, and all elephants. empowersafrica.org

Dear Biet, ‘Biet Breath’ changed my life! I feel like ever since I began doing your breath work, I am so connected to life, and so free from daily worry. I do, however, wonder if I am in any danger? Your breath work is so intense sometimes I wonder if I may harm myself. What’s your experience with this?

Meditation teacher Biet Simkin answers Purist readers’ questions.

Hannah,Thanks! U.K. Dear Hannah, I get this question all the time, and I myself have been suspicious of my own breath work, in the beginning years of its mastery. However, I have concluded after many years that it is safe and you are safe. I didn’t share this breath work with the world until I really felt secure in the matter. I would not do more than 15 rounds in a row, but all in all I typically only do three rounds of three...so if you’re in that range, you will be totally fine! As always, do the breath work in a soft environment, so if you fall, you won’t hit any objects. BietEnjoy! Dear Biet, I did your breathing practice with Cristina Cuomo in an IG a few weeks ago, and it was so transformative! I started weeping, and I felt like I unlocked something I hadn’t accessed my whole life. It was, however, scary to see such a vulnerable side of myself. She lost her son to stillbirth and then shortly after, got pregnant with a baby girl. I was so amazed by her bravery, but she explained that she somehow knew that her baby boy came to die and teach her a great lesson, to uplevel her connection to her soul...she also felt intuitively that she was meant to have a girl, as the baby who passed away would have been her fourth son. So she just jumped in and got pregnant again, almost immediately. I know her story isn’t everyone’s. Artisan treasures from the Mediterranean and beyond 26 Madison Street Sag Harbor 32 Via Mizner Palm Beach

AC: We are such a long way from living in a society where we are taking care of our people and our planet. I believe that everybody feels better when they are able to contribute to the common good and that more people would do it (or do more of it!) if it were only made easier.

AR: You host an annual fundraiser in East Hampton. What have you learned about food insecurity on the East End?

Surprisingly, in NYC, there is no centralized way to reach educators to make them aware of nonpro t resources like Green Beetz. Because of this, we’ve primarily relied on word-of-mouth and direct outreach to contact teachers and principals.

AC: We run a very lean operation—almost all of the money we are able to raise goes to programming in public schools. We have a number of people who volunteer their time and efforts in ways that re ect their talents, skill sets and interests (and have a great time in the process). Anyone interested in getting involved should contact us at of ce@greenbeetz.org.

32 MINDFUL StockAdobe PURE GOOD

AC: Although Green Beetz doesn’t directly provide food to those in need, the topic of “food justice” is a core component of our curriculum. It is shocking to learn that an estimated 1 in 4 adults on Long Island faces food insecurity, and that a signi cant number of those individuals who face food insecurity are children. Children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning—even permanent brain damage.

AC: When schools were closed during the pandemic, we focused our efforts on building out our online educational portal—Green Beetz Direct—so that our curriculum would be accessible to students wherever they were. We were thrilled to see teachers across the U.S. and even abroad register to teach the program. We are still primarily focused on NYC schools, but Green Beetz is now being taught in Tennessee, Washington state, California, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Vermont and Florida. We’ve also had schools in Canada, South Korea, the U.K. and China register for our program online.

The topic of food justice is a core component of Green Beetz’s curriculum.

AR: What’s your biggest challenge right now?

AC: In one Green Beetz elementary school, the fth grade students decided to make a play about modern industrial farming. Then they had a citizens’ group take action against con ned animal feedlots in their town and boycott their products, as well as make regulations and laws preventing that kind of treatment of livestock. We see again and again how Green Beetz inspires extension/research projects in classrooms, like students writing letters to cereal companies requesting they decrease sugar quantities and reduce packaging. That’s real student empowerment!

Everyone truly has something to contribute, it’s just a matter of matching their skills and interests up with the right tasks.

BY ADAM ROSANTE

Green Beetz co-founder Dr. Anna Chapman teaches children how to make healthier food choices for themselves and the planet.

AC: Green Beetz has great retention—over 90% of our teachers return year after year and are instrumental in helping to spread the word. Still, our biggest challenge since day one has been outreach to new schools.

ADAM ROSANTE: For anyone who’s not familiar, what is Green Beetz?

AR: Can you share a success story?

AR: How can someone get involved with Green Beetz?

AR: Why is it important to use your life to be of service?

Dr. Anna Chapman: Green Beetz is a plug-and-play curriculum for elementary and middle schoolers to learn about our complicated modern food system. The food landscape has changed so much in the past 100 years and has had some pretty bad effects on the health of individuals, communities and the Earth. The curriculum is currently being delivered in NYC public and charter schools in all ve boroughs, usually during science class. Each lesson includes hands-on activities (whether art, science or cooking) and original media content (our lesson videos feature Miguel Cervantes, who plays Alexander Hamilton in Hamilton on Broadway!).

AR: What would someone who already knows about the organization be surprised to learn?

I am not a climate activist, but I instilled in my children the importance of protecting our environment, now more than ever. I’m glad to see that many years later, my children do the same with their children. A close friend of mine told me a few months ago that he needed T-shirts for his company, and asked if I knew anyone who could help. The shirts had to include an environmental message. I told him that I would love to collaborate with him on this idea. We are grateful to live amid the natural beauty of the Hamptons, so I wanted to give something back to nature, and developed the idea of 1tee 10trees. I was able to nd a small manufacturer in Los Angeles that uses premium cotton with modern, updated ts— exactly what I was looking for. My friend loved the concept, the T-shirts, later ordering 600 of them. This allowed us to plant 6,000 trees with our partners at onetreeplanted.org, a nonpro t organization that has put more than 20 million trees in the ground this past year. Giving back to nature feels good; that’s why a “Do Good” logo is printed on our shirts. 1tee10trees.com

“Photography is about the intuitive moment and knowing to hit the trigger in that very moment,” says Frank Wurzer, a Hamptons- and Berlin-based photographer specializing in family portraiture.. A family tree is rich with nuance: a network of unique relationships, history and a strong bond running through each generation. A well-executed portrait can capture these sentimental details, preserving the essence of each member and the love they share.

Wurzer dives deep into the emotional core of a family to properly execute each series of photos. Soaking in the details of a subject’s life, from clothing choices and body language to the look of their home, Wurzer carefully curates every photo shoot according to individualized preferences. “When I dedicate myself to a family, I form an inner image, a feeling for that family and the place where they live,” he says. “I spend time with each family member. That includes recommendations for what to wear for the shoot. And let’s not forget the pets.”

“When many people get their initial diagnosis, they are often alone. You hang up from that call like, ‘What do I do, where do I go from here?’” says Laura Borghardt, director of cancer services at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “We see patients as people. They are not just their cancer. This is something that happened to them. Not who they are.”

A revolving schedule of wellness activities includes meditation, yoga, Reiki, massage, a “food as medicine” nutrition program, a “strength through song” singing class, plus counseling for both patients and caregivers. All of the cancer wellness programs are free and are available to any person living or residing on the East End undergoing cancer treatment, even if they are treated elsewhere.

The state-of-the-art center—with two oors dedicated to radiation oncology, medical oncology and hematology—is home to a cutting-edge TrueBeam linear accelerator: the latest and greatest in cancer- ghting technology designed to target and maximize radiation dose to the tumor volume, while preserving healthy tissue. This futuristic care system is complemented by the center’s eet of comprehensive wellness offerings, marrying modern treatment methods with traditional healing practices. “Everyone wants to treat the body, but if you’re not addressing the mind, it’s not a full treatment plan,” says Jessica Swiatocha, nurse practitioner and manager of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and wellness services. “Treating patients in a more holistic atmosphere helps them in their cancer journey, and gives them an emotional outlet.”

A cancer diagnosis can radically change one’s life in an instant. Grueling treatments take a toll on the mind as much as the body, leaving many patients feeling isolated and scared about an uncertain future. With modern medicine often hyperfocused on the physical body, the spiritual health of patients is often neglected. But at The Phillips Family Cancer Center of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, cancer warriors are more than just a statistic.

Individuals who are currently undergoing treatment in New York City or elsewhere but wish to spend time on the South Fork can seamlessly continue their treatment at the Phillips Family Cancer Center, a wholly integrated site of Stony Brook University’s Cancer Center, providing direct access to leading specialists and clinical trials. stonybrookmedicine.edu

CC: You treat complex conditions, chronic and more immediate ones. Why did you become an acupuncturist?

Acupuncture is a medicine that goes back about 2,000 years. It’s based on the Dao, which is all about harmony and balance. When the body is in balance or homeostasis, it can heal itself. That is the goal of Chinese medicine.

KM: I worked in digital media back in the ’90s. I was also doing triathlons and getting injured, burning the candle at both ends. My rst acupuncture experience had a profound effect. I could feel energy, which I found out later to be Qi, move throughout my body. About 2008-2009, I felt called to work in the wellness space, so I decided to go to grad school and study acupuncture, and here we are.

KM: Research shows that CBD and cannabinoids bind with receptor cells in the body and downregulate in ammation. CBD or hemp works through the endocannabinoid system; Chinese herbs work through different pathways, whether moving blood or breaking up stasis.

KM: These products help an injury to heal, and so you start taking less, and then forget about the injury and stop taking it. If you get a are-up, take it again.

CC: You incorporated very high-quality hemp.

KM: I’m very lucky to partner with a farm in upstate New York called Hudson Hemp. It’s premium grade and organic, the highest quality hemp in the Northeast.

KM: Balance is a full-spectrum oil, great for daily wellness and also for anxiety. Reach oxygenates the brain for energy and focus. The most popular formula is Rest, to promote sleep. Relief is for pain. Most people take tinctures, but there’s also a capsule line. Gummies using cannabinoids like THCV and medicinal mushrooms like lion’s mane extract are being packaged as we speak, and should arrive in a couple of weeks.

CC: How did you begin working with Chinese herbs and incorporating them into your acupuncture business?

KM: Chinese herbs are a big part of Chinese medicine. They are super-effective at treating so many different conditions. The only problem is, if ever you’ve had the teas or brews that they make in Chinatown, they can taste unpleasant. What I set out to do was to create a product line that would extract Chinese herbs, still be effective but more palatable. Around 2017, CBD started popping up on my radar; it was exciting that there was a lot of interest.

KM: They are all about getting your body back in balance.

44 SPACE MADOO MAGIC Exploring painter Robert Dash’s hidden-in-plain-sight gardens and home in Sagaponack. BY RAY ROGERS The verdant gardens and lily pond at Madoo Conservancy

The 2-acre garden has been completely organic since Dash started tending it 55 years ago. It borrows inspiration from diverse areas around the globe (like the 18th-century French decorative vegetable garden that’s a direct copy of the artist’s friend Rosemary Verey’s famed Barnsley House in England), with delightful surprises along the way, from the purple owering weeds that give pops of color behind a row of sculpted topiary Regency hedges, to a green spire from the old Woolworth building that juts out of another verdant patch—a gift from another friend of Dash’s that adds a touch of whimsy.

Robert Dash’s “Dining, Spring,” 1972, acrylic on linen, 24 x 24 inches, in Madoo Conservancy

Things are certainly more manicured around here than that childhood favorite, but it still feels wild and wonderful. A baby bunny nibbles away in the midday sun; buzzing pollinators dart from one owerbed to the next. The fragrant gardens are like a portal to another era. “It really is this crazy slice of old Sagaponack—a place with a lot of character. Little by little, that’s been getting wiped out in the area, and it’s really important to us to keep that. Weeds and all.”

The grounds are open to the public Wednesday, Friday and Saturday during the summer and Friday and Saturday in spring and fall, and they’ve seen an uptick throughout the pandemic of visitors eager to do outdoor activities. “Part of the goal is to continue expanding our audience, while at the same time keep it special, like a secret, which is tricky; you want people to feel like they’re stumbling upon something for the rst time.”

“This is a 1740 barn, from a legit Sagaponack farm. When Bob rst saw it, a cow was still in here,” says Madoo Conservancy’s executive director, Alejandro Saralegui, as he walks through the art gallery where Robert Dash once painted. “Bob renovated this space as his studio and worked here for the rest of his life, pursuing his three passions: writing, painting and gardening.” Saralegui has been associated with the property for 13 years, working with Dash the last four years of his life, and continuing on in the spirit Dash intended for the land he dubbed Madoo, which means “my dove” in Old Scots. “He was very clear about not wanting it preserved in amber. He wanted change, and change happens in a garden naturally— plants die, the deer eat something, better plants come up in the market. We work within Bob’s color palette on the hardscape, but we do change colors. He changed things all the time.”

As an added draw, cultural happenings spring up in the garden from time to time: Earlier this summer, a group of 50 was treated to God’s Fool , a new Martha Clarke piece that just premiered at La MaMa. “That was its rst outdoor staging,” Saralegui says of the theatrical musical, based on the life of St. Francis of Assisi, “and the company is next going to Umbria to perform on-site.” This year, they’ve instituted a kids’ makers camp for the end of August. And off-site, a show at Tripoli Gallery through September 5 features the oral paintings of Dash and Connie Fox, an artist who lives in Springs and was college friends with Dash from their days at the University of New Mexico. 618 Sagg Main St., Sagaponack; madoo.org

“Over there, you’re in Asia, basically,” says Saralegui, pointing to the near distance. “Here, you’re in the ancient world with the gargoyles, the pavers, oil jars, obelisks and the temple. Yet you’ve got a really American tree here, the pawpaw tree, which is mentioned in Where the Wild Things Are —there’s a little nursery rhyme under the pawpaw tree,” he notes.

ConservancyMadooCourtesy

The painter’s artistic aesthetic is as alive in his gardens as on his canvases, thick with acrylic paint, and often depicting scenes from his beloved Madoo, such as his painting of giant yellow hollyhocks that hangs inside the gallery. “He had a fun expression: ‘I paint with a trowel, and I garden with a brush.’ So they are very intertwined but there’s nothing obvious about it,” says Saralegui. “Usually, you get either a designer’s garden that might have a very limited palette, or you get a plantsman’s garden, which has got a zillion things but not much design. Here, you get the two really closely intertwined, and that doesn’t happen terribly often.”

Creatives continue to find inspiration and community in East Hampton.

A stone’s throw from where Jackson Pollock developed his drip painting technique, in the Springs section of East Hampton, mixed media artist and sculptor Nicole Corbett uses her body and hair to apply whimsical, abstract strokes of color glaze to large ceramic moon jars, hand-built using an ancient coiling technique. Coils are layered up and sculpted into this shape, hollow inside. She’s at work in a studio that once belonged to Gerson (Gus) Leiber, and his wife, Judith, who was famous for her evening minaudière clutches of metal, skins and crystal, a craft she learned as a young woman in Hungary, surviving Hitler. A rst lady bag lady, as the tabloids quipped— several carried Judith Leiber designs at inauguration. Gus, a painter and lithographer, built the studio with its enormous windows allowing a ow of air and light, and a view of the expansive gardens of which he was most fond. After they died, within hours of one another in 2018, their home went on the market. In the summer of 2020, when Nicole and her husband, Peter, decided to move to Springs full time, and were looking for a space, Patricia Wadzinski of Sotheby’s International Realty (patricia. wadzinski@sothebys.realty) guided them here. Nicole insisted upon having a studio; Peter thought that might limit them in their search. Having seen many properties prior, the couple—who had been living in a town house in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, before exploring the East End— took a second visit to this one before declaring their love. Now preparing for a solo show at Colm Rowan Fine Art on Main Street in East Hampton, opening on October 8, Nicole Corbett will also exhibit her work at the Hamptons Festival of Music Sept 9-11 at LTV Studios—where a video work will be screened in collaboration with an orchestra overture on September 11. For Nicole, inspiration was a given, sensing not only the vibes of Pollock and Lee Krasner, but also Helen Frankenthaler. The area has also been home to Constantino Nivola, who worked down the street developing his technique with sand casting. Taryn Simon lives in the hood, as does the novelist Anna Pitoniak, who, with her husband, Andrew Bartholomew, purchased a property from Wadzinski as well. spaces, and with one another. Noting a trend for young “creatives” coming to this area, Wadzinski says, “Newly emerging younger generational buyers who have been part of the corporate world are using those experiences for a new chapter, exploring and living out their dreams and desires for a more balanced, nuanced life. One can step in and out here. Breathe. Find like-minded spirits.

Anna Pitoniak left a career in publishing to write full time. A kiboshed, yearlong worldwide trip planned for March 2020 left Pitoniak and her husband homeless, as it were; they had just let go of their Manhattan apartment.

After a brief time crashing with each of their parents, they found an Airbnb in Montauk, and discovered how much they loved the area. They soon met Wadzinski, who found them a modest house off Maidstone Beach overlooking Gardiners Bay—and just a block away from the S&S Corner Shop where pricey pottery and cappuccinos are better suited to the upscale area residents than to Bonackers, or long-time locals.

Pitoniak describes her new novel, due for a 2023 release, as the love child of John le Carré and Ann Patchett. She says her inspiration comes not only from writers in the area—she cites the late Sag Harbor resident E.L. Doctorow, whom she had met when she worked at Random House, and Alan Furst, who writes great espionage novels, her passion—“I felt the pull of the visual artists.”

The S&S Corner Shop, after all, was an old studio where Willem de Kooning had his canvases stretched. Nicole Corbett, who made the move Springs,WilliamsburgfromtohascarvedoutanicheforherworkintheEastEndartscene.

I hope this new generation of buyers will continue to embrace the beauty, the wild, less-frantic life that is here. Stepping into the majestic two-story lobby sets the stage for grand adventure. The necklace-like chandelier is a knockout, and two elegant marble staircases take your eye up the mezzanine as they curve up and around the check-in desk.

The Selby has 210 luxury rental residences and 27 executivelong-staysuites.

“The two-story windows look out into the open-air, landscaped courtyards, and also onto the park,” Dubb says. “Driving down Merrick Avenue at night, the lit chandelier looks spectacular through the second-story glass.”

Not only does the French château-like Selby overlook Westbury’s rolling Eisenhower Park, but its focus on nature, serenity and access to tness options merges wellness and luxury in a completely new way.

“We not only have the nicest apartments on Long Island,” says Dubb, “but we offer the nicest lifestyle on Long Island as well.”

As Manhattanites continue to move out of the city, and empty nesters long to right-size from larger homes to an easier way of life, the need for amenity-packed luxury apartments outside New York City has reached a crescendo. And The Selby, at press time scheduled for a late-summer grand opening, is poised to be the crème de la crème of the housing trend.

In addition to the 75-foot pool deck (with an adjacent clubhouse), The Selby, home to 210 rental apartments and 27 long-stay executive suites, features an array of amenities that includes a yoga room for daily classes, two treatment rooms, an enormous gym and tness center, a two-story “grand salon” library, a colorful children’s playroom, and a bar/lounge area that will host happy hours and other socials for residents. A 6,000-square-foot restaurant, spanning two stories and facing Eisenhower Park will be open to the public. Other additional amenity spaces include a business center, conference room, clubroom, catering kitchen, outdoor grilling areas and concierge services.

“Most apartments and amenity areas have views of Eisenhower Park, and the second-level pool features green landscaping,” says the project’s developer and The Beechwood Organization principal, Steven Dubb. “You don’t feel like you’re on an upper level of a building; it’s more of an organic extension of the park.”

The esteemed New York City-based rm Ismael Leyva Architects designed both the U-shaped building and the interior of the condominium-sized residences, which range from studios to three bedrooms plus den. In addition to park views, apartments offer balconies, Viking appliances, quartz countertops, plentiful windows and luxe nishes. The 27 executive suites feature the same amenities, and are fully furnished with custom-designed pieces. “They don’t want to slow down—they want to experience life! They are accustomed to certain lifestyle expectations, and as a senior living provider, it is our duty to make sure we keep up with market trends. Baby boomers have disposable income and want to live their best life with fewer headaches. So we are here to do the legwork for them.”

“The baby boomer population doesn’t see retirement as the time to wind down; it is their second chapter of adulting,” says Joanna Mans eld, Coterie’s SVP and GM.

All residents have a membership to Sollis Health, which Mans eld calls a “concierge service and private ER rolled into one that minimizes unnecessary visits to the emergency rooms.

Health services are an obvious top priority at Coterie, which boasts on-staff wellness coaches trained by Mayo Clinic, exam rooms equipped with state-of-theart telehealth technology, and a designated RN case manager on staff who focuses on bridging the gap between assisted living and the health care system.

The apartments themselves are stellar, too, and feature smart home systems for low-stress living, and luxe nishing touches such as heated bathroom oors and circadian lighting in Memory Care residences to help regulate sleep and mood. There’s also the Sky Terrace, an outdoor space on the Coterie Club oor that offers wraparound views for alfresco dining.

Living at Coterie is also about having easy access to pampering at the highest level, plus ways to stay active and involved in the community. The on-site salon’s services are rendered by Oscar Blandi, and there’s a spa treatment room, juice bar and yoga/Pilates studio. Residents have exclusive access to museums, concierge access to the Shops at Hudson Yards, black-car service throughout Manhattan, and hospitality services for same-day booking of tickets to Broadway shows and other needs, such as pet care. There is also an emphasis on philanthropic partnerships so, Mans eld says, “our residents can continue to give back to the community they call home.”

“Plus, all assisted living residents are provided with CarePredict bands, which is our emergency response system,” Mans eld adds. “It’s more than just a ‘request for help’ button. It offers geo-fencing from precise locations within the building, two-way communication with staff, and opens their apartment doors.”

Chris McDonald

An Amagansett client contacted Amaden Gay insurance principal Chris McDonald from The Bahamas last winter to tell him that a low-temperature alarm had gone off in his Hamptons home. McDonald drove out to the property to inspect it. “There was severe water damage,” he says. “One of the pipes had frozen and then burst.”

The Bowtie House in Amagansett, created by Barnes Coy Architects and Consiglio Builders

The focus of Amaden Gay, says McDonald, is “personal insurance—insuring the beautiful homes of the Hamptons,” as well as its boats, vintage cars, jewelry and ne art. “A lot of the time, people’s insurance gets scattered, especially when there are a lot of moving parts, like multiple homes and art collections,” he says. “We can help by identifying coverage gaps and consolidating all of their policies with one carrier. We do this both locally and on a national basis.”

AmadenprincipalGay

Peace of mind is the ultimate wellness objective of wellplanned insurance. Founded in 1890 in the village of East Hampton, the family-owned Amaden Gay agency prides itself on an intimate, detailed understanding of Hamptons living. “Out here is a very unique situation, from an insurance perspective,” says McDonald. “A lot of carriers want nothing to do with the Hamptons—they think it’s a risky area because we stick out in the ocean; we are susceptible to oods and wind damage. The home values are so high that some carriers shy away from it. When you work with our agency, you get the expertise of a broker who knows the ood zones, the elevations, the building codes, and other factors that go into insuring a Hamptons home.”

A common oversight involves umbrella insurance, a type of personal liability coverage that offers an added layer of protection to existing policies. “If a car insurance policy has $100,000 in liability, and the umbrella requires $500,000 liability, there’s a dangerous gap in the coverage,” says McDonald. “There are successful people out here who have never understood what their policies cover. Their insurance has never been explained to them.”

Amaden Gay’s staff of 40 is dedicated to helping clients decipher the ne print, to discover ways to save money, to pinpoint where they might be underinsured. Consultations are free of charge. “A potential client shouldn’t hesitate to call us with questions, or just a second opinion,” says McDonald. “We help people make sure they’ve got the right protection for their family and their assets. Our clients really appreciate the personalized guidance and service we offer.” amadengay.com

54 SPACE

McDonald FaceTimed the client to show him the wreckage, then coordinated cleanup; an in-house Amaden Gay team helped process the claim. “We were able to address it much sooner than it would have been if the client were working with someone outside of the Hamptons,” says McDonald, adding that timeliness headed off another potential disaster. “Water sitting in a house,” he says, “can turn into a mold situation.”

East Hampton’s Amaden Gay insurance has a long track record of o ering robust protection to the community.

PURIST: Skin Solutions Collective takes a”360-degree approach to skin and beauty.” What does this mean, and how are your treatments designed in relation to this philosophy?

Lauren Abramowitz: We take a “less is more” approach; 360 means that instead of focusing on a single focal point, I take the full face and one’s natural anatomy into consideration when developing a treatment plan. My focus is to create facial optimization and balance. Sometimes a patient will come in for lip ller, when in fact all they really need is some chin ller to balance out their lips. There is an artistry involved in this type of work, knowing when to say no and when to say yes. We create an extremely personalized and curated experience. You’re not just another number. Every treatment is thoughtfully customized and takes our patients’ unique anatomy and goals into consideration. We are de nitely not a “drive-by” Botox practice.

The ultrasound helps increase vascularization around the hair follicle, increases the size of the hair follicle and hair shaft that shrinks with age, inhibits depigmentation and decreases hair loss. The treatment takes 20 to 25 minutes.Isuggest three treatments one month apart, then maintenance treatments every two to three months, supplemented by a regimen of topical minoxidil/ nasteride drops for men and topical minoxidil/progesterone drops for women. You will see a decrease in hair shedding in two weeks, an increase in new hairs after four weeks and an increase in hair diameter in eight weeks. It can also be used on eyebrows or beards. I personally used Alma TED four weeks ago when we rst got the medical device, and I am doing my second treatment this week.

PURIST: You created a signature skin care line, Sobel Skin RX. What are some of your favorite products? HS: I developed one of the rst doctorformulated skin care lines back in 1991, which was purchased by Procter & Gamble in 2008. Approximately two years ago, I unveiled Sobel Skin RX, a unique product line containing the highest concentrations of ingredients that have withstood the test of time. We launched with 14 products, and each product has the Sephora “Clean” certi cation seal. My absolute best-of-the-best product is the Retinol 4.5 % Complex Night Treatment, which won Allure ’s Best of Beauty award. It helps to build collagen and decrease ne lines, wrinkles and pore size. It also has my patented SD-100 delivery base that increases the absorption of the retinol while decreasing any irritation, and is time released. SD-100 helps to repair the skin barrier that weakens with age, prevents damage caused by environmental pollutants, and protects against dryness and loss of water. My other favorite is the Bio Hyaluronic Moisture Cream Extreme, a marinebased moisture cream that also contains SD-100, as well as hyaluron—a smaller molecule of hyaluronic acid. It gets into the skin better, holding 100 times its weight in water.

Improvement will continue to be seen over weeks through several months, delivering results that can last more than ve years. The procedure takes approximately one hour and is performed in my accredited OR. Results can be seen immediately, restoring that youthful submental-cervical angle of the neck and eliminating central neck bands. The procedure can be combined with liposuction of the neck if there is submental fat, or with Kybella injections to dissolve fat. If the patient has more than a moderate amount of skin laxity, the patient may require an open invasive neck lift procedure, so it’s so important for me to be very selective when considering candidates for MyEllevate.

HS: We recently introduced the Alma TED hair restoration device to our practice, the rst in Manhattan. By age 50, 50% of men and 25% of women experience hair loss: that’s 50 million men and 30 million women. By the time a person notices thinning they have most likely lost about 50% of their hair. Hair restoration is a $4 billion industry, with countless topical and ingestible solutions on the market, as well as scalp lasers and PRP therapy. We launched Alma TED because it combines most of the other procedures into one noninvasive, pain-free treatment without downtime or any injections. The device uses acoustic sound waves and air pressure to drive a combination of growth factors, peptides, nutrients and vitamins into the scalp without any pain. The acoustic sound waves and air pressure drive the meds past our protective layer of skin down into the dermis.

The procedure can be completed with the Vivace radio evenmicro-needlingfrequencydeviceformoreskintightening.Thereislittletonobruising or suturing of small puncture sites, and patients can go back to work in 24 to 48 hours.

“Right away, people realized that as intimidating of a facade as this place has, it has got a good heartbeat to it.” Montag helped reinvigorate the 19th-century mansion and estate when he moved out here from Manhattan with his now-wife to assume the role of general manager.

72 WEEKEND HouseRoseToppingCourtesy

“The big thing was making it as welcoming to as many people as possible, being as inclusive as possible to the public,” he recalls.

The day we meet, he’s decked out in smart sneakers, a white polo shirt, shorts and black Ray-Ban aviators, the picture of relaxed cool, savoring a sip of the elegant, easy-drinking house rosé he sourced on a trip to Provence last year. “We must have visited every château in France” looking for the perfect bottle, he recalls. “We wanted to nd something we could welcome guests to the hotel with—when you stay in the hotel for $2,000 a night, we want it to be a memorable welcome experience.” They landed on Domaine Sainte Marie, about 18 miles outside of St. Tropez, and bought the remaining 500 cases of that year’s production. “The whole place is organic and biodynamic.

Features on Bravo raised the pro le of the 22-room inn to national levels, and collaborations with the likes of Veuve Clicquot (on the annual July Fourth pool party) helped bring the age demographic down a few decades from the tony, privacy-seeking clientele of yore.

The winemaker Christophe’s father owned the winery for 30 years, so he was raised on the winery.”

Topping Rosé House Provençal Rosé brings guests a taste of the South of France, and it pairs perfectly with the hotel’s Jean-Georges menu offerings. “It tastes tremendous; it tastes like Provence—it’s crisp and there’s no aftertaste at all,” he adds.

“Every guest that checks into the hotel gets this, regardless of if you got the room on Hoteltonight or you’re spending $5,000—this is what you get,” says Montag. “It immerses you into the community.” And many are bringing a bottle home, purchased straight from the gift shop. “We want to make this experience something that you can take with you.” Sip it in the garden during the iconic hotel’s Friday rosé and oyster happy hours. The multicultural crowd of guests in the courtyard—a cute young gay couple huddled together, a sari-clad Indian family, a diverse cluster of friends enjoying oysters paired with rosé—speaks to the inclusiveness of this exclusive property.

Yes, there are plenty of celeb moments on the premises—the weekend we speak, there are supermodels, Billboard chart-topping soul crooners and rappers occupying ve of the hotel’s 22 rooms heading into the July Fourth weekend—but Montag has bigger measures of accomplishments. What he’s most proud of over the course of his six-year tenure here is the community the hotel has fostered.

It’s a balancing act to operate a luxury property that’s sweepingly inclusive and very exclusive at the same time. “It was way, way too stuffy” when he came on board as general manager of Topping Rose House in 2017, says Joseph Montag, who’s made it his business to see that overnight guests and visitors alike have a special experience.

“There are the nationalized employees that come to me every year to sign their recommendations to become U.S. citizens—we have Colombians and Russians, for instance, who have become Americans—and babies who’ve been born, numerous families that have been economically supported by the hotel. The more and more I do my job well, the bigger the in uence it can have on the community.” Cheers to that. toppingrosehouse.com

Meanwhile, the Ascent Pavé Diamond Engagement Ring’s continuous geometric setting is a high-tech honeycomb of 18K Fairmined gold. Apart from their eco-consciousness, Aether diamonds are quite simply gorgeous, brilliant evidence that sustainability really is the new luxury.

WEEKEND

DiamondsAetherCourtesy Aether Diamonds’ gems are good for the planet.

76

“I am proud of the fact that we’ve been able to solve a problem that has been a universal challenge for the diamond trade,” says Ryan Shearman, Aether Diamonds’ CEO and co-founder. Mined diamonds and other labgrown diamonds are made from carbon sources (i.e. fossil fuels) extracted from the ground regardless of the negative impact on the Earth. But Aether’s diamonds take their carbon from a higher source: air. In a patented process, Aether Diamonds uses direct air (CO2) capture technology to extract carbon from the atmosphere. Next, the captured CO2 is synthesized into the hydrocarbon “feedstock” needed to grow diamonds in a chemical vapor deposition reactor. “Aether diamonds are the rst diamonds on the market that drive a tangible, positive impact for both people and planet,” Shearman says. Further to his point, another piece from the Bombé Collection, Aether Diamonds’ Octo Stud Bauble Statement Earrings With Floating Stones, resembles the great globe itself, a symbol of how intentional design choices can help save the Earth.

BY JULIA SZABO

“Diamonds made from air” sounds like a beautiful fantasy—and it’s a reality in the luxury cosmos of Aether Diamonds (aether is a Greek word for the sky’s upper reaches). Diamonds and sustainability are the keywords of every Aether Diamonds creation, whether the stunning Synthesis Statement Earrings, or the Octo Stud Signet Ring With Floating Diamond, from Aether Diamonds’ justlaunched Bombé Collection. If you prefer a ring around your wrist to one on your nger, consider the Double Pavé Set Octo Stud Bangle.

DIAMOND LIFE

Meet sustainably made jewels from Aether Diamonds.

“Sustainability may have once come with signi cant sacri ce when it comes to traditional hallmarks of luxury,” Shearman allows, but no longer. “We believe that era is nally behind us, thanks to cutting-edge technologies just making their way to market. For Aether Diamonds, maintaining the importance of craftsmanship, design and superior quality while developing planet-friendly technologies has always been our true north.” aetherdiamonds.com

HIGHWAY TO WELL

This fall, New Yorkers looking to trade the fast pace of the city for the bucolic splendor of the Berkshires can head for the hills on the Hampton Jitney. The East End leaders in luxury motor coach travel will now shuttle folks intent on self-care to Miraval Berkshires, a spa and wellness retreat. The round trips run through October—a perfect time to take in New England’s spectacular foliage.

“We realized that a majority of guests were visiting from New York City,” says Vic Cappadona, general manager of Miraval Berkshires. “Many city residents don’t own cars, and public bus and train travel is not ideal. This partnership is coming at the perfect time.”

Common Ground teaches the power of nonverbal communication as you collaborate with a horse, and gain insight that applies to personal and professional relationships. There are Wyndhurst Mansion exclusives such as Sip & Sketch: A Gilded Age Gathering, and Tea & Tarot. Pamper the body as well as the mind with Miraval’s signature facial, using Laurel Skin, a ower and herb-infused skin care line made with local ingredients—the Tulsi Rose Balm was sourced at farms in Lenox, Massachusetts. Melt away stress with an Ayurvedic massage like abhyanga, which uses warm herbal oils to release toxins and balance energy. And you won’t have to ght through traf c on the way back home. The cost of the Hampton Jitney to Miraval Berkshires is complimentary with a stay when you book midweek (Sunday-Thursday). hamptonjitney.com

The Berkshires are the perfect place to unwind, recenter the mind and get in touch with nature.

At Miraval, guests can participate in workshops such as Gratitude Meditation, Vibrational Sound Chamber, Restorative Yoga, Neurodynamic Breathwork and more.

RS: A few years ago, my friend Jennifer Miller called to tell me there was retail space next to her store in Southampton, and I knew that is where I wanted to be. Our stores share a great courtyard, and it’s always a party. Between her jewelry and our clothes, there is nowhere else you need to shop. The Hamptons customer has a place to go in real time. Most come in looking for an out t for something happening that night or upcoming weekend. The NYC shopper is similar in terms of occasion shopping, but usually ends up adding a piece or two for the future.

PURIST: Your designs are popular for segueing effortlessly from day to evening. In this post-lockdown summer, why is this quality especially ideal?

IN THE MIX

With a new retail location in Southampton, Ramy Brook moves from day to night, summer to fall in lively style.

RS: I am heavily inspired by the 1970s. That decade represents glamour, sexiness, fashion and fun. Many of our designs date back to that time in an updated and modern way. We recently launched occasion wear, which includes designs such as low backs, deep V-necks and lots of sparkle. The pieces have an all-around fabulous vibe. Women in general have always been an inspiration to me. We can do more in one hour than most men can do in one day, especially moms. I want to make sure our collection has that wow factor because our Ramy Brook girl deserves it.

PURIST: What makes Southampton an ideal location for your boutique? What does the Hamptons customer want that distinguishes her from the customer of your NYC agship?

RS: Now that everyone is enjoying a more normalized lifestyle, every woman needs some easy out ts that they can take from day to night. Some of my favorite pieces are our cover-up maxi dresses. They are perfect for the pool and beach, but can also be worn straight to happy hour. There is nothing I love more than completing an out t with fun jewelry and a good pair of heels. Both jewelry and shoes are what elevate an out t from day to night. 28 Jobs Lane, Southampton; ramybrook.com

PURIST: What are your current inspirations?

RAMY BROOK SHARP: In early fall, you will nd a buy now, wear now collection in our Southampton boutique. Our colors represent a neutral palette with a pop of cobalt blue. We want the clothing to transition you from August into the fall, without looking and feeling so summery. As we move into September and October collections, we add colors that represent the leaves changing and start to bring in rich jewel tones. You will nd more silhouettes with sleeves and fabrics that have textures, such as tweed and faux leather.

I am always drawing on my upbringing as a Parisian. I grew up there, and my taste was really shaped by French culture. But I am also American, and Chinese and Basque, and I feel that my multicultural background is truly what brings depth to my design sensibility, and is what makes Altuzarra’s point of view so unique. There is a little bit of French sophistication, American ease and comfort, Chinese tradition and Basque Mediterranean air.

JA: My family and I spend so much time in the Hamptons, and it’s always been a dream of mine to have a store here. The Hamptons customer is just as discerning as our New York customer (and is often the same person), but I think during the summer she is looking for something just a little bit more relaxed and more fun.

At Altuzarra, a display of byaccessoriesnewinspiredtheHamptonsJosephAltuzarra

PURIST: What is your favorite Hamptons pastime? Where do you like to dine that is close to your East Hampton boutique?

JOSEPH ALTUZARRA: The collection we are showcasing at the store in East Hampton is very much inspired by summer, by the seaside, and that feeling of lightness and sensuality that I associate with this season. I particularly love our beautiful gingham knit set—it really captures the spirit of the Hamptons; the off-theshoulder Lily dress, especially in crisp white cotton poplin; and our hand-dyed Shibori T-shirts in vibrant green, blue and pink hues—perfect for a summer day at the beach.

BY JIM SERVIN

JA: Luxury is de ned by the care that is put into the creation of the piece, and by the joy that the piece brings to the customer. To me, it’s all about emotion.

Joseph Altuzarra brings global sophistication to a light and airy collection at his East Hampton boutique.

PURIST: How do you de ne luxury in 2022?

PURIST: You grew up in Paris. What have you drawn from your background to bring added chic to your East Hampton boutique and current JA:collection?

SUMMER

PURIST: Favorite new accessory JA:design? Our Watermill tote, named after the town in which I live here in the Hamptons, is one of my favorite bags we’ve ever designed. It’s the perfect basket, both timeless and a little bit edgy, with leather strapping encasing the body of the bag. It’s perfect as an everyday tote, for shopping at the farm stand, or dinner out with the family.

PURIST: Tell us some of the highlights of your latest resort-ready collection.

JA: I love walking around East Hampton on a beautiful day and discovering new shops. Sometimes I’ll pop into Carissa’s for a salad and a fresh juice for a quick lunch break, or drive to Bostwick’s Chowder House with my family if we’re in the mood for lobster rolls, before getting some sweets at Dylan’s Candy Bar. 2 Main St., East Hampton; altuzarra.com

PURIST: What are your current JA:inspirations? For the last year or so, I have been obsessed with the idea of myths and mythology. There is something so beautiful and poetic about storytelling, especially as a way of making sense of the world around us. Frances Valentine’s resort staples bring winsome elegance to Southampton. BY JULIA SZABO

Kate Spade, née Katie Brosnahan, passed too soon into fashion’s pantheon—the beloved designer’s untimely 2018 death is still mourned by her well-heeled-andhandbagged fans, who continue to sport the many timeless items bearing her name, from totes to eyeglass frames. Happily, Spade’s Golightly spirit and impeccable style live on in her nal creative project: Frances Valentine, the label she co-created with her husband, Andy, and close friend Elyce Arons, who calls FV “a modern American lifestyle brand with a joyful perspective.”

Embroidered tunics, Mary Jane ats and a world of wicker bags—plain or embellished, structured or less so— all are destined to become required resort staples, on par with Lilly Pulitzer shifts or Jack Rogers sandals. The Delightful Caftan—essentially an elongated tunic, a peony print in white, navy or robin’s egg blue—is just the thing to pair with heels and a Buccellati parure for an East End evening. Sustainability is prioritized alongside style, with FV nery packaged in biodegradable and/or reusable packaging (including poly bags made from 70 percent cornstarch and 30 percent PLA/PBAT).

There was no more perfect summer home for this newcomer than Southampton: “We were thrilled to nd a beautiful location in the heart of Jobs Lane for Frances Valentine,” says co-founder Arons. “It is such a beautiful street, perfect location and fun for people to explore the town. We have been so welcomed by all of our neighbors, and although my home is of cially in Bridgehampton, I just love Southampton.” 42 Jobs Lane, Southampton; francesvalentine.com

The Canvas Fringe Candy Stripe Hat is a perfect accessory for a beach day.

In the decades since, the business has dealt diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds and the entire rainbow of in-demand gemstones, set in designs as different as the ravishing rose-cut stones encircling a Buccellati ring or the biomorphic shapes of bracelets by Vhernier, from classic styles (David Webb) to contemporary (Anita Ko).

Once upon a time, when watchmakers made house calls, a European artisan by the name of Charles London settled in Glen Cove, Long Island, quickly becoming the area’s in-demand watchmaker. As he made the rounds of estates, repairing and rewinding grandfather clocks, London’s renown grew, and pretty soon, the rich and famous were paying him visits at his agship store, where the jewels within the timepieces weren’t all that glittered.

Charles London’s vision continues evolving, thanks to his great-grandchildren: Scott Udell, Randi Udell-Alper and their cousin, Zach Udell. The most spirited sparklers in the London Jewelers crown may well be its up-andcoming fth generation, Udell-Alper’s daughters Sienna, Skye and Sylvie, a trio of women born to lead their great-great-granddad’s legacy into the next century.

Beyond watches, London Jewelers’ collection includes a selection of delicate, stackable rings.

Heading up the company are London’s grandson, Mark Udell, and his wife, Candy. Like the movement of a ne timepiece, hardworking heirs to the London legacy operate with reliable precision and timeless high style.

All three of them grew up with London Jewelers, as I did, so jewelry is part of our DNA. We love our customers, and we celebrate their life milestones together with them: every wedding, every baby shower, every bar and bat mitzvah. Everyone who walks through our doors is treated like family.”

CROWNING GLORY

London Jewelers has earned its distinction as America’s premier retail jeweler, with six locations, two of them in the Hamptons (East Hampton and Southampton).

VIVA VALENTINO

Valentino’s two-story style sanctuary in East Hampton is, for a shopper, what a pristine wave is to a surfer. Here, every care has been taken to recreate the casual spirit of a mid-century modern summer place—down to rattan seating and sisal ooring, amid other charming details. It’s all the seemingly effortless artistry of creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, self-appointed historianarchivist of the iconic maison he pilots, designing with a palette as bold as the hot pink he chose for Valentino-clad celebrities at May’s Met Gala, and possibly bolder, making a rainbow of vibrant colors the timeless new black. The word “vintage” might suggest something muted or colorless, but there’s not a whiff of faded glory in the vibrant, thriving brand founded in 1960 by the legendary

It’s not my fault.” Patterns that rst captivated Valentino loyalists in the 1960s and 1970s—especially the animal magnetism of the boldly graphic, black-and-white ’60s Giraffa—look totally new on display in the East Hampton boutique, showcasing men’s and women’s summer musthaves, from head scarves to handbags. Lovers of vintage patterns will be overjoyed to see that Giraffa’s fellow archival prints, Round Rain’s sunburst and the undulating Valentino Waves, also look equally chic today.

But it’s not all fun and games. Shoppers may also rest assured that this 1,600-square-foot space delivers on what every global Prada a cionado expects and craves: elegant, impeccably tailored men’s and women’s ready-to-wear collections, luxe leather goods, footwear and accessories, all designed to make a subtle and serious style statement.

Of all the ways that Prada has expressed its iconic triangle logo in the 109 years since the house’s founding in Milan, a green neon sign just might be the most surprisingly contemporary, with artful echoes of a Dan Flavin art installation. And of the many must-have handbags proudly bearing that same signature Prada triangle, an open-weave raf a tote could be the most unexpected.

93 PradaofCourtesy WEEKEND

To drive the point home, the East Hampton shop interior—which Prada appropriately calls an “installation”—is out tted in oor-to-ceiling vertical stripes of green and white, conferring the playful effect of being wrapped up in a cheerful, unisex beach towel within a cozy poolside cabana where gentle sunlight oods in.

The luxury fashion brand makes a splash in East Hampton with a new boutique.

These are just two of many delights in store for East End shoppers, who now have a new destination on their luxury browsing itineraries. The rst-ever Prada store in East Hampton, which opened last month at 2 Newtown Lane, successfully repackages shopping as an art form.

One has come to expect such an elevated approach from the Italian luxury label whose Milan-based Fondazione Prada has spearheaded so many important cultural projects since its founding in 1993. Why shouldn’t recreational resort gear be every bit as chic as the everyday status accessory one carries to work?

SJS: Heavy metals are so tricky. They’re hard to treat, hard to analyze. We have a saying in functional medicine: The solution to pollution is dilution, and that means water, water, water. It takes an enormous amount of uid to move anything through the detoxi cation system, because it has to move through the kidneys, the liver, the gut. Everything has to go out, and the only other way it goes out is through the skin. We detox some of these metals through the skin. That’s where sweat and saunas, heat and exercise help.

SJS: We are highly evolved in our liver function; we’re able to manage a very complex, high load of substances that aren’t of use to us. Drugs have to be detoxed. It doesn’t matter if it’s a cold medicine, a u medicine, an allergy medicine. The trouble comes with the volume of toxicity we’re subjected to, chemical and environmental, from drugs to hormones to what’s in our food, to herbicides, pesticides, the air we’re breathing. The concept of detoxi cation has become more of a hot button, because every generation is exposed to a larger global toxic load.

SJS: As far as cleanses go, there’s never a magic bullet.

SJS: Remember, some of it is normal. Some of it is just life. We are exquisitely capable of taking in an average amount of waste. We are not exquisitely capable of taking on such a high volume and eliminating it.

CRISTINA CUOMO: What is detoxing?

CC: From the moment we are born, we inherit environmental toxins.

CC: With regard to trendy, expensive programs and plant-based cleanses out there—do they work?

DR. STACIE J. STEPHENSON: Detoxi cation is a normal process going on every moment in your body. It’s literally like taking the garbage out. We have the skin, the microbiome, the immune system, all sampling everything we take in from the environment. Your body asks a simple truth: Safe or unsafe? Can I use this substance? If I can’t use this substance, it has to move through a ltration system of some sort and be eliminated.

CC: How does the body detox?

CC: If you have a high level of heavy metals in your body, what can you do about that?

CC: It’s important to remember to hydrate after a sauna, or if you’re sunbathing or doing a rigorous exercise regimen outdoors in the heat. You’ve got to triple the SJS:hydration. You absolutely have to triple the hydration, but also remove all other impediments. We are a pharmaceutical culture. If you’re on hormone therapy, or utilizing any kind of hormones, you have to detox that. Even the natural hormones we produce in our own bodies have to be eliminated through the liver. You can get rid of sugar. You can reduce and eliminate your caffeine, and elevate your hydration. Remember, half your body weight in ounces per day is a good minimum for hydration, and add more depending on how much heat and sweating you’re going through. Just those things— hydration, reducing or eliminating caffeine, substantially reducing or eliminating sugar, reducing processed foods— provide an enormous foundation. Think of these as daily aspirations, daily graces, a meal at a time, an hour at a time, a glass of water at a time.

“Hydration, reducing or eliminating ca eine, substantially reducing or eliminating sugar, and reducing processed foods provides an enormous foundation. Think of these as daily aspirations, daily graces.”

Listen up—your body wants to give you a bespoke diet, exercise and stress-reduction plan.

In an era where personalized medicine, personalized nutrition and patient empowerment are in vogue, it’s important to remember that personalization starts at home. That is to say, personalization begins with you understanding you. Our bodies talk to us, but many of us don’t listen or don’t consciously register the messages we are receiving about the way we live. Yet, this is how to understand what you personally need to do for the healthiest, longest, and most vibrant life possible.

KNOW

BY DR. STACIE J. STEPHENSON

The only way you will really know what works for you is if you pay attention to how your body responds to different foods you eat—and not just what foods, but how much of them, how often, and at what time of day. The same goes for movement.

98 VIBRANT DesignandPhotographyDavisDawn&Bob

Finally, let’s talk about stress. We all carry stress differently. Some of us have more than others. For some, meditation is a lifesaver; for others, it’s excruciating. Coping, prioritizing, delegating, sleeping more, getting massages, strolling through the woods or along a beach— whatever relieves your stress is what matters. Just because something is supposed to be stress-relieving doesn’t mean it will help you if it actually stresses you out more. So how do you get these messages your body is always trying to send you? Take a few minutes at the beginning and end of each day to check in with yourself. Does your stomach feel at or bloated? Do you feel energized or drowsy? Is your thinking clear or cloudy? Does something hurt? Those signals are feedback on your lifestyle, and understanding that is the best way to design a lifestyle that is personalized for you.

Take a few minutes at the beginning and end of each day to check in with yourself for feedback.

While I strongly believe that exercise is the best medicine, what kind of exercise works best for you is also highly individual and may change throughout your life. Some people thrive on intense cardio, while others feel better and less stressed with less cardio and more strength training, or with more stressrelieving exercises like yoga, swimming or walking in nature.

I often talk about the Vibrant Triad—the three most essential aspects of a healthy lifestyle that most dramatically impact how well your body and mind will function. These are diet, movement and stress management. But although I recommend certain dietary principles, types of movement and stress-management techniques, I always back away from being too strict about a particular or exact meal plan, exercise regimen or stress-reduction technique. That’s because your body knows what you personally need better than I ever could. For instance, I like a lower-carb Mediterranean-style diet heavy on vegetables and seafood, light on grains and alcohol. That diet works for me, is widely studied and lauded, and is healthful for most people. But you personally might feel better with more whole grains or red meat in your diet. You may or may not do well with dairy. You may digest cooked vegetables better than raw ones, or nd you need to go easy on the fruit, or avoid alcohol altogether.

Allow to cool, then squeeze out 5-6 cloves (or all, if you are a garlic fan!) into a bowl. Add labneh, half the preserved lemon and 1 tablespoon olive oil; season with salt and pepper and mix to combine.

1 head garlic

Tomato season brings us the boldest, most vibrant hues of this summer fruit, and this recipe plays up their inherent sweetness with a symphony of avor. I’ve paired heirlooms with labneh—a Middle Eastern strained cheese similar to yogurt—which is infused with roasted garlic and preserved lemon. Sourdough croutons coated with za’atar add a tender crunch. Preserved lemons—used in a variety of Middle Eastern and Asian cuisines—can be bought in jars (I like the ones from New York Shuk), and add a tangy fruity bite to this dish.

4. To serve, spoon labneh on a platter and top with tomato slices. Add remaining preserved lemon, then top with croutons. Garnish with basil and mint leaves, then nish with a glug of olive oil and aky sea salt.

1 cup labneh 1 preserved lemon, rinsed and minced, divided

2 pounds heirloom tomatoes, sliced (Serene Green) Basil and mint leaves, for garnish (Amber Waves) Flaky sea salt (Amagansett Sea Salt Co.)

PURIST: Which farm stands do you like to frequent?

In the South of France, everyone has a “real” ratatouille recipe, whether it be from their grandmother, mother, aunt, distant cousin or friend of a friend of a friend. I’ve tasted many variations over the years. Some are made by cooking the vegetables separately and combining them at the end; however, I don’t nd that necessary, as I love when the avors of all the ingredients marry together through osmosis. I do follow the order of when to add each vegetable to the pot, as the different textures means different cooking times and that’s important. — Eric Ripert

In a large saute pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic and pepper; saute until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the zucchini and eggplant, and stir well; cook for 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes and oregano, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are tender and the liquid has evaporated, about 10 to 15 minutes. Season the mixture with salt and pepper, and serve hot.

STIRRING THE POT WITH ERIC RIPERT

ER: The ratatouille can stand alone as a vegetable dish. However, it goes very well with poultry or seafood, like tuna.

3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into 1-inch dice

Eric Ripert: Fresh ingredients on the East End are seasonal ingredients; therefore, they taste better. It is great to source fresh local ingredients all while supporting the local farmers.

PURIST: What other ways do you like to incorporate fresh local ingredients for summer meals?

ER: I often go to Halsey Farm. But I also support many other stands where they have locally grown produce and, of course, organic is always a plus.

ER: I always follow the season when buying local ingredients for a meal. Often the dishes are dictated by whatever I have found at the farm stand and what looks the best.

There is a special quality of beauty that is about endurance. Many women have a period where they are on their game, but for most of us it is fleeting. However, there are people like Jennifer Aniston, who show us that once you discover who you are, you are at your best. She has set a standard— not for what she has built on the outside, but for what she has built on the inside. That is a thing to celebrate.

On the outside, Aniston’s countless awards are the manifestation of her endless hard work on shows like The Morning Show (Aniston is about to start filming its third season) and in films like Cake, which have solidified her standing as one of Hollywood’s most talented and biggest stars. On the inside, she’s created a positive balance in life and takes a stand against the cacophony of negative messaging in America. Aniston leads by example—by getting socially and politically moved by organizations like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and getting behind the right side of issues, and that has inspired women to feel confident about their voices. On June 24, when the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to an abortion, upheld since 1973, it sent shock waves through the population, as we grappled with the unfathomable: that in America, supposedly the land of the free, women’s right to autonomy over their bodies was being taken away, that the poorest and most vulnerable among us were suddenly more at risk. Outrage and sadness soon gave way to asking questions, to searching for light in the darkness. At Purist, we spoke to the experts who provide compelling ways to inform and mobilize from all areas, from what we can do on a legislative level to how we can shore each other up and take care of ourselves mentally and emotionally. Knowledge is power, and our writers deliver the insights and tools needed to navigate this new reality wisely and vigorously, with compassion for self and others.

OUR BODIES OUR CHOICE!

JY: Everyone is entitled to their view, including religious views. My religion does not teach this, and we live in a country in which no one set of religious beliefs is meant to dominate.Democracy derives from natural law, which holds that every person is entitled to basic human dignity. Denying people bodily autonomy strips them of basic human dignity.

Still, if it’s not passed in the next year, there might not be another opportunity for a decade or more.

Second, nd out where the candidates on your ballot stand on abortion access, and make it your top voting issue. Then tell them it’s your top voting issue. That is what the anti-abortion movement in this country did for decades until it became a litmus test to get elected.

CC: What is the solution to securing a woman’s control over her own body?

OUR BODIES OUR CHOICE!

Third, encourage your members of Congress to vote to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act. It would create a new legal protection to get or perform an abortion in this country. It already failed in the Senate and we don’t know what the Court would do if it passed Congress.

With her “News Not Noise” newsletter and Instagram missives, Jessica Yellin has been keeping her followers up to date with the current state of world and national a airs. Here, she gives Purist her informed perspective on women’s reproductive rights in the U.S.

JY: There are many. First, understand that Americans are not evenly divided on whether abortion should be legal. It is correct to say Americans disagree about when abortion should be legal or for whom, but polls show that overwhelmingly, this country does not think abortion should be banned. Too often the media does not represent this reality. So you can talk about the reality that abortion is health care. Normalize this conversation: Have you had an ectopic pregnancy that ended in an emergency procedure? How about a miscarriage—in many states the procedures required to keep you safe in a crisis pregnancy are now illegal.

Cristina Cuomo: Do you believe the original Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision was well Jessicareasoned?Yellin:

THE RIGHT TO HUMAN DIGNITY

BY CRISTINA CUOMO

The ERA says: “Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.” It’s pretty simple.

As I write this, three states are on the cusp of banning abortion—denying women access to what is basic and often essential medical care. We can debate where in the Constitution women derive the right to bodily autonomy or what we think of the Roe v. Wade’s trimester framework, but the bottom line is, women are being denied health care, the right to control their own destiny, and basic human dignity because of the Dobbs ruling. None of that squares with the values and natural law tradition that birthed democracy.

Jessica Yellin

Finally, learn about and support passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. The Constitution does not guarantee women the same rights and protections as men. There is no explicit mention of protection against discrimination on the basis of sex or gender. The ERA would change that.

There will also be efforts by states that support abortion rights to pass state laws or constitutional amendments enshrining the right to abortion. And a number of states are becoming—or have become—sanctuary states to offer legal and nancial protection as well as abortion services for those who travel from out of state to get abortions. You can back those efforts if you live in one of these states. For information on where each state stands, check out the Guttmacher Institute. Choose an abortion rights organization, and get involved.

JY: The big issues coming up: Will states sue people who travel to other states to get abortion services? And will antiabortion states succeed in banning the use of medication abortion in their borders? There will be legal cases on all of this and you can support organizations doing that work.

CC: Do you believe overturning Roe v. Wade has been years in the making?

Some of them are The Center for Reproductive Rights, If/When/How Repro Justice and the Legal Defense Fund. The ACLU and the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project are also helping to address data security for pregnant people who look up abortion services online.

JY: Yes. Abortion opponents won this victory after 50 years of persistent work. They formed the National Right to Life committee in 1968, before Roe but just after the Griswold case, which legalized contraceptives for married couples. The Federalist Society, which gave legal intellectual heft to the movement, was founded in 1982. New political groups formed in the 1980s to push an anti-abortion agenda and elect politicians who would ll courts with anti-abortion judges, elect anti-abortion politicians and demand opposition to abortion as a litmus test to get the presidential nomination.

Start locally. Start by researching the candidates on your ballot—from hyperlocal all the way to national, and nd out where they stand on abortion rights. Call their campaigns if you have to. Share what you learn with friends. Then help three friends register to vote, or nd their polling place or get the material they need to ll out their ballot. It ripples out, truly. This is how change happens. Call your members of Congress and tell them you are counting on them to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act—your vote depends on it. Mostly, don’t be silent.

There are many organizations providing support for people who need to travel for abortion. The National Network of Abortion Funds helps link people in need with networks who can offer nancial and medical support. Ineedana.com helps you locate a place to get an abortion nearest your state. Also, medication abortion accounts for more than 50% of U.S. abortions. At least right now, you can get the pills by mail. Check out Plan C Pills, Aid Access and Hey Jane. There are many more organizations doing legal work, working on data privacy issues and organizing. They all need volunteer support donations and help with word of mouth. Choose your group and get involved.

How far do these states want to push this? This is not overwrought thinking. The Department of Justice has led a lawsuit to stop the Idaho abortion near-ban from going into effect as is, because they argue it violates a federal law that says hospitals must provide care to save the life or health of a person. We are on this path already. I’ll remind you that during the recent baby formula shortage, the Senate took up the PUMP Act, which would have ensured 9 million new moms had a protected right to breastfeed at work. They failed to pass it. Again, in the middle of the baby formula shortage. Is this really about how much our society cares about new life?

CC: What can we do to activate more to protect this right on a federal level? On a state level?

CC: Women are being forced into a state of fear—fear of losing control over their rights. How do we become JY:change-makers?

CC: How can we help those whose reproductive rights are being stripped state by state to access abortion without J:penalty?

And if we can at least agree that the pregnant person is a person—then what rights does that person have, and whose rights triumph if the fetus is legally considered a person? Are states that ban abortion going to begin child support at fertilization? If the fetus is a person entitled to rights, who wins if a woman has to take medication to save her life that could harm the fetus? What’s to stop a biological father from claiming custody rights over the fetus? If that developing life is a person under the law, then what’s to stop a court from ruling that the biological father has an interest in controlling the body of the pregnant person? Could a court order the woman to eat what the biological father wants her to eat, or take the medication he dictates?

One of AIT’s core initiatives is its Community Leadership Program that partners with local grassroots organizations to provide the tools, resources and training needed for civic engagement. “Democracy is about speaking up,” says Leader. “Women do that really well, and they just need the tools and support to do it successfully.”

Lauren Leader’s childhood buddies always knew she would end up an activist. You might say that’s almost a given for anyone growing up in Washington, D.C., especially if they had idealistic parents like hers who came to the capital armed with PhDs in political science to work for the Carter administration in the late 1970s. But Leader, who is the co-founder and CEO of All in Together (aitogether.org), a nonpartisan, nonpro t women’s civic education organization, sees her passion for political involvement as a calling that others could easily and responsibly dedicate themselves to as well.

Leader could probably write the book on hard work since she does it with such grace and intelligence. (Yes, she is an author: Her book Crossing the Thinnest Line: How Embracing Diversity—from the Of ce to the Oscars—Makes America Stronger came out in 2016). She’s a contributor on MSNBC’s Morning Joe , often speaking about gender and politics. “What got me into politics were issues about family leave in the corporate world,” she said, and after talking about taking action with a friend’s parent who was instrumental in writing the groundbreaking Family and Medical Leave Act, she started doing pro bono work on the Hill on thoseThatissues.experience gured into the creation of AIT, which teaches the skills needed to enact change, no matter what issue one wants to tackle. The group does this in different ways, via forums like the recent Black Women

One such woman is Vashti Rutledge, executive director of Madisonville Education & Assistance Center (meaccincinnati.org) in Ohio. Rutledge became a fellow in AIT’s program in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, and found the skills she learned with “a fantastic cohort

“Democracy is a lifetime commitment,” says Leader, when asked via Zoom whether her organization’s priorities had changed in light of the U.S. Supreme Court of cially overturning Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to an abortion in June. “Our goal is building an army of active citizens, women who understand their own power to shape the country and are showing up to do that,” says Leader. It’s not about just one issue, but rather an ongoing challenge to do the hard work to enact real and substantive change. “What’s become skewed about our political process is people feel engaged during a political cycle—you show up and you vote—but that’s not how it works.” Or where it ends: No matter what party or president is in power, she says, the hard work involves holding our civic leaders accountable. All in Together (AIT) teaches women how to do just that.

Every woman can have a voice in shaping our democracy. All in Together, co-founded by Lauren Leader, helps women find that voice and use it e ectively.

123 of women” made her a better advocate: “Even though we were housebound doing a online, truncated version of our workshops, we deepened our knowledge of how to navigate the political system, coming from our own unique perspectives.” That was a key takeaway, says Rutledge, who feels the skills she learned have had an impact at work and in the community. “My role is to help other people see their potential and where to place their energy,” she says. “Not everybody has to run for city council, with so many other opportunities to tap into that relate to their own passion andThestrengths.”emphasis on the personal rings especially true when Leader talks about her commitment to her family and her own physical and mental health.

“For me, the balance of investing in regenerative things to keep my energy and focus is enormous.” Leader, who lives in Westchester and is a single parent to three adopted daughters—Chantale, 21, Stella, 12 and Serena, 6—has plans to ride in the Hampton Classic this year. “At the end of the day, whatever helps you nd yourself again,” says Leader with a laugh. “I ride and one of my daughters rides, and connecting with nature and animals is really regenerative. I got on a horse for the rst time at 35. Horses are very zen and pick up on your stress.” She has been going to the Hamptons for more than 20 years and is a devotee of One Ocean Yoga in Bridgehampton and Pierre’s (“Pierre always remembers my daughter’s favoriteMeditationsalad”).has always been one of her ways to “manage the inner challenges in my life,” says Leader. “I could not do what I do without meditation—I’ve had a 25year practice and for me, meditation was this incredible gift. It’s a mental/emotional muscle you work and get stronger at every day, without even realizing it. It’s like when the 12-pound weights you thought were heavy all of a sudden feel light. Meditation gives me resilience and an ability to manage really hard things.”

Pro-choice voters must be mobilized to turn out in droves.

MELISSA MURRAY: My main focus right now is explaining the decision and its consequences to nonlegal audiences. Many people have taken the Supreme Court at its word that this decision merely returns the abortion debate to the states for “democratic deliberation.” I want to make clear that this will not be an easy state-by-state resolution. “Red” states are already making it clear that they will try to thwart those who wish to leave their borders to seek an abortion. And those of us in “blue” states will see pressure on our existing reproductive rights infrastructure as folks come from other states seeking care. Further, the only way to enforce statewide bans on abortion and bans on leaving the state to seek abortion is to create a surveillance state that tracks those of reproductive age and capacity. Basically, this will not be like the world before Roe. It will be worse because Melissa Murray, a leading expert in family law, constitutional law, and reproductive rights and justice weighs in on the immediate ramifications of the overturn of Roe v. Wade, and what to expect in its aftermath. AND INTERVIEW BY CATHRINE WHITE

CW: It doesn’t sound like the anti-abortion movement is holding off with just overturning Roe. What comes next?

CW: There has been a lot of discussions and ngerpointing in the media in regard to how the Republican legislators achieved such dominance in 2010. The abortion-rights advocates had support by Congress; they had a Democratic president in the White House. What was missed in 2010?

MM: Although the Dobbs majority opinion insisted that the decision was con ned to abortion, in fact, its logic and reasoning could easily be applied to other rights we hold dear. The majority held that there is no right to abortion because such a right is not expressly stated in the Constitution and because it is not “deeply rooted in the history and traditions” of the United States. We could easily say the same of the right to use contraception, the right to interracial marriage, the right to sexual intimacy and the right to same-sex marriage. All of these rights proceed from the same vision of “liberty” identi ed in the 14th Amendment that underwrote Roe and the right to an abortion.

MM: Hard to say. It depends on the law and its text, which will likely vary from state to state. But it is worth noting that the court insisted that this decision would “settle” con ict over abortion. That’s a pipe dream. We are going to see a raft of new legal challenges, all raising issues like that one presented in this question, as well as questions that will be issues of rst impression.

MM: This decision is the product of the 6-3 conservative supermajority at the Supreme Court. Pure and simple. Any new challenge would come before that 6-3 conservative supermajority and would likely be resolved in a similar fashion. That said, there is Congress—although meaningful Congressional action will depend on progressives widening their majorities in both houses—and state legislatures and state courts.

125 we have the technology—and in some states, the desire— to create an effective surveillance state.

CW: Can families sue the state if their family member dies because of these forced birth laws and doctors hesitating to treat a pregnant woman?

MM: The current landscape presents a real challenge to physicians, who, in the face of laws that limit abortion to “emergency” cases, must determine whether the circumstances in question are suf ciently exigent to meet the terms of the law. Some, worried about making the wrong call and risking their professional licenses, may simply avoid making the call at all. All of this cultivates a landscape of confusion and chaos that makes it hard for patients to understand what care they can expect and for physicians to understand what exercises of professional judgment the law will tolerate. And to be clear, that kind of confusion and chaos may be exactly the point. An environment in which patients are unsure of the extent of their rights and doctors are unsure of the weight of their professional judgment is as effective a deterrent to abortion as an outright ban.

CW: In states like Texas, where the law is prohibiting abortion after the detection of a fetal heartbeat, or about six weeks, one could ask: How is “six weeks” determined? How do they determine the six weeks from a legal perspective ?

CW: Can this ruling be reversed if another case is brought before the court or is it done?

CW: If a person is seeking a medication abortion, one thing they can do to facilitate that is to take pills [mifepristone and misoprostol]; the symptoms of taking those are cramping and bleeding—those are the same symptoms that occur during a miscarriage. What will this mean for women now, getting the care that they need, especially as the doctors can’t follow their best medical instincts because they are so fearful of lawsuits.

MM: That is a great question. Based on my understanding of the law, it’s six weeks after the last missed period (LMP), which is actually quite different from six weeks after conception.

MM: Advocates and activists have been saying for years that the creeping conservative tilt of the Supreme Court and the lower federal courts is an existential threat to reproductive rights in general, and Roe v. Wade, in particular. When I testi ed against the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in 2018, I said he would be a reliable vote to overrule Roe. And I was right. The truth of the matter is that Donald Trump vowed to appoint conservative judges and justices who would overrule Roe v. Wade, and he had the chance to stock the lower federal court with judges who were clear in their antipathy for reproductive rights. And, of course, he had the chance to seat three justices on the Supreme Court. Elections have consequences, and pro-choice advocates and activists warned us that the election of Trump and the growing conservative legal movement would threaten Roe. Rather than pointing ngers at advocates who have done their best in an increasingly hostile legal climate, perhaps we should think about how to stem this tide by turning out prochoice voters in droves in subsequent elections.

Part of the awakening moment will take place in the care we seek out for ourselves and our younger generation. We can reposition ourselves outside of the Western industrialmedical complex and return to care that centers our needs, voices and our human rights rst. This might look like nding health care providers who are culturally coherent and competent, who are good listeners, who make you feel truly seen and heard; or learning how to access

What can we do to shore up each other in light of the Dobbs decision?

1. Circle Together This moment is calling us to be fully activated, stepping up for and centering communities who have been historically marginalized, as well as for our local communities. Simultaneously we are called to be stewards of one another, and pivot into being protective nurturers for our communities. Can we be curious at this moment? I believe we can radically reimagine, remember and reclaim—a return to a primal knowing that we are the ones responsible for the power of our wombs. One way to access that power is being able to soften into our innate potency. If we only harden and rage in this furious moment, if we only prepare for the war on our wombs, we may miss the opportunity to nd solutions from a place of liberation and wholeness. So often we put on our Superwoman capes and keep ying, but in fact, right now we need to make sure we also slow down, rest and gather our inner resources, so the solutions come from a mindful, invigorated place. An important act we can each do is to create nurturing, safe spaces to gather, rest, heal past traumas and collective wounds, and move forward, intentionally making cocreated decisions on how we’re going to move together as a whole—because we can’t do this alone in a framework of separateness. Gathering might look like a small circle of friends, wider sister/brother circles or community healing circles. We should include the younger generation, the elders and all who have wombs. Nurture the awareness of reproductive cycles, acknowledge our reproductive responsibilities and create safe spaces to honor our daughters’ rst bleeds. So much of our power is in our softness, our nurturing, our fertility, fecundity and creativity. Our power is there even when we’re not doing anything, it is just in our beingness. This kind of feminine power, not exclusive to gender, is capable of profound change and while it can be violated, it can’t be taken away, which is why it is threatening to oppressive systems. Don’t worry about circling together any “right way.” You only need to gather with a shared intention. By intentionally gathering together, the healing occurs.

RECLAIMING POWER

Khefri Riley is a doula, educator, mompreneur and co-director of the Frontline Doulas perinatal health program in Los Angeles, which connects Black families to Black doulas. She shared the following four insights:

2. Return to Our Roots

126

Starting with our 2016 postpartum companion, The First Forty Days , and our new pregnancy companion, Nine Golden Months , my co-authors, Heng Ou and Marisa Belger, and I have spent years encouraging women to reclaim a more supported maternal experience, rooted in traditions of community care. A circle of midwives, birth workers, guides and healers from East and West that we call our “wise ones” has become our books’ village of elders and sisters. Their words invite a shift from outsourcing oversight of our bodies and a return to sourcing deeply from within. I turned to this village now, hoping to reframe my response to this monumental rollback of rights and unearth a pathway through the darkness.

Just as this rollback of rights will impact marginalized and underserved communities more than others, the burden of care will fall even deeper into the caregivers, practitioners and community-based organizations who bring support to the womb-bearers in those communities—the midwives, the doulas, the family clinics. Activists who have been ghting for better maternal outcomes will now also ght for abortion rights. Consider this a magni cent call to action for anyone who cares

Frontline Doulas – Centering the Community program, frontlinedoulas.com Birthing Advocacy Doula Training, badoulatrainings. org Sister Song, a reproductive justice organization, sistersong.net Miscarriage and Abortion Hotline: 833.246.2632 (operates 8AM to 2AM EST) Exhale Pro-Voice Hotline: 617.749.2948 (nonjudgmental counseling, operates 3PM to 9PM weekdays, 1PM to 9PM Saturdays, and 3PM to 7PM Sundays, all PST) This moment is calling for us to be fully activated.

4. Don’t Lose Joy It’s easy to feel like the Supreme Court decision has decimated our reproductive rights to ashes. Even so, there is beauty there in the ashes. What helps me is contemplation of the Buddhist teachings of impermanence. This is a temporary, impermanent setback in the scheme of things; we will nd solutions by walking in the reawakening of our sovereign power, of our feminine wisdom in action, in the strength and success of our predecessors. While it may feel that we can’t escape the shadow aspects of society’s dominant systems of oppression—and the oppressors, who, for way too long, have loved to position themselves inside a woman’s reproductive journey—this is their one nal struggle. If you want to be up in our wombs, then you’d better get ready, because you are gonna get healed by our wombs. How can we invite ourselves to be the radical healers that we need in this moment? As we like to say at Frontline Doulas, “the revolution is in the womb.” It’s up to us to envision and stand rm in the revolution that we seek—what we see for ourselves, the health of our communities and for future generations. Let us reset the soil joyfully, with an exuberant framework so the youth can be inspired to recon gure new systems in a magni cent way.

education on natural family planning and even holistic reproductive health care. So many women assume they “have to” go to a busy OB/GYN of ce for all matters of reproductive health. That’s not true. Midwives and family clinics can handle not just pregnancy and birth outcomes, but all low-risk reproductive concerns, starting with our early menstruation years. Midwifery-led care centers the whole person and family, not the medical treatment or intervention. Doulas trained as abortion doulas or fullspectrum doulas can offer emotional and social support for pregnancy release. In California, doula support for abortions should be available on Medi-Cal starting in January 2023 (a cause that I have been involved with as a stakeholder). This is a time to share knowledge about what other kinds of reproductive care is available outside the Western medical model of care.

A WOMAN’S SCORN Harnessing the energy of fierce self-compassion for justice and change.

“The whole thing boils down to patriarchy,” says Neff. “Why is it that people don’t want an angry woman? They might complain about the situation they’re in. Perhaps the silver lining of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade is that we are talking about women’s rights again. From the moment women are identi ed in the womb, oppression starts. Women must make a decision about what is more important: to be liked. or to foster change.” It’s a tough decision to make for women raised with an archaic model of romantic love. “The whole idea of romance is a tool of patriarchy, this idea that, as women, we are only valuable when a man says you’re beautiful, you’re special, you’re the one, and ‘I will take care of you.’

Contrary to self-pity and victimhood, self-compassion fosters inward gentleness, outward bravery to speak up, and the courage to do something different. It ignites interconnection, key to authentic erce self-compassion.

Typically, we associate self-compassion with soft, tender energy. Now, more than ever, we need to recognize the other side of self-compassion: a erce, action-oriented energy that protects ourselves and others, while fostering justice and “Self-compassionchange.

“We must let go of the idea that we are individual, separate selves,” Neff says,”and see ourselves in relation to others. Not just to other women, but to humanity. Fierce self-compassion is not about ‘poor me,’ it is about all humans being harmed by this system.”

“When we frame self-compassion in light of human rights and justice, it is empowering,” Neff says. “It is not just you. It is saying, ‘Hey! This system is harmful. We have to change something.’”

Women buy into it hook, line and sinker,” says Neff. The concept, by design, keeps women in “their place.” Neff proposes self and societal examination to push beyond an idea of love so twisted and distorted by gender socialization. Let’s face it: Equality and interdependence require responsibility in a society where subjugation and codependence remain the norm. “Women need to come together now, more than ever,” she says, “because it is often other women who reinforce the consequences as much as men. They have internalized the system.”

Fierce self-compassion doesn’t dehumanize, it creates harmony in a broken system.

Sometimes it means standing up for yourself, speaking up, rocking the boat, being angry, being OK with not being liked,” states Dr. Kristin Neff, author, associate professor of educational psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, and pioneer in the eld of self-compassion research. After completing her most recent book, Fierce Self-Compassion , in response to the #MeToo movement, Neff’s current enterprise includes courses in Fierce Self-Compassion (self-compassion.org), which empower women to accept all their feminine energy, including the parts that they have been socialized to suppress. Neff’s passion lies in her desire for women to embrace their mama bear energy, namely anger, and start examining systemic oppression.

Once women realize that to stand up for themselves means standing up for all people, including their children, the conversation shifts from the individual to the whole.

I’ve devoted my career to mental health and developed an easy-to-use and highly effective suicide prevention tool called the Columbia Protocol, enabling anyone to broach the subject of self-harm and assess suicide risk with six questions. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) helpline is an excellent resource for broader mental health conditions, and anyone at risk of suicide can dial 988,

The United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade—limiting access to abortion and dismantling reproductive rights—has left women reeling from a devastating loss of bodily autonomy. In addition to the women it directly impacts, the bold move by the court has many men and women worried about the impact the loss of access to safe and legal abortion will have on the health and mental well-being of women in their lives. With 1 in 5 U.S. adults experiencing mental illness, this reversal in rights may trigger stress, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While I am deeply concerned for the mental well-being of women in the current climate, I know hope can be found in candid discussions and resources to help prevent self-harm or suicide as we navigate this alarming new reality. As a mental health expert, I believe minimizing abortion access is dangerous for mental health. We know people in socioeconomically marginalized and lower income groups are disproportionately affected by this decision, as they have less nancial ability to seek an abortion outside of their immediate areas. Further, there is heightened risk for Black and Indigenous people, and those of other minority groups, who face maternal health disparities, and they are less likely to receive adequate mental health care. These discrepancies place a population whose mental health has already been signi cantly impacted by the recent escalation of racism and violence at increased risk for PTSD, anxiety and depression.

HOW TO ACKNOWLEDGE MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS

Those in favor of stricter limits on reproductive rights often assert abortion is psychologically harmful, suggesting abortion may even lead to suicide. These claims are not credible. There is evidence, however, that abortion access does not harm one’s mental health. A 2016 study with more than 500 women across 21 states showed those who obtained an abortion were no more likely to report mental health symptoms or suicidal thoughts than people denied abortion access. While unwanted pregnancy can certainly strain mental health, a separate 2020 study found over 95% of the women who obtained an abortion reported con dence in the decision ve years later. These studies are important in debunking myths linked to abortion and mental health, but they will not bring back abortion access in many states. We must be vigilant about one another’s mental health, and provide the rst stages of real support when needed. Using proven resources that facilitate ongoing dif cult conversations may help prevent those with, or at risk of, mental illness from becoming consumed by trauma and desolation.

Navigating an alarming new reality. BY KELLY POSNER GERSTENHABER,

• Get involved in your community by joining a support group or by volunteering for an organization whose causes align with your beliefs.

In the wake of Roe v. Wade’s overturning, here are some additional ways to support mental health during these uncertain times:

• Hold conversations about emotions and spend time with loved ones. Use the Columbia Protocol if you fear that someone you know may be considering suicide.

• Consider psychotherapy or psychiatry if you are experiencing depression and/or anxiety.

Wade is tragic, and we may potentially feel the harmful repercussions of this decision for decades. But amid the grief and fear, we must always remember to connect and check in with one another regularly using resources that are readily available and proven to work.

• Take a break from the news if it is causing you undue distress.

• Meditation and movement can help center your mind-body connection.

• Check in with yourself and others about feelings.

MORE ACTIONABLE TIPS TO SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH IN A TIME OF UNCERTAINTY AND CRISIS

• Spend time in nature—the bene ts of fresh air are enormous.

• Call the SAMHSA helpline at 800.662. HELP (4357) if you are in crisis. Abortion access does not harm one’s mental health.
