QCU Milestones for Academic Year 2022-2023

Quezon City University (QCU) has recently achieved several remarkable milestones, underscoring its commitment to academic excellence, research, and community partnerships. These milestones include the successful organization of the university’s first-ever research colloquiums, signing of crucial memorandums of understanding (MOUs), and undergoing rigorous quality assessments.

In May 2023, the College of Computer Studies at QCU hosted its inaugural information

technology student research colloquium. The event showcased nine outstanding capstone projects, emphasizing the synergy between human and information technology for sustainable development.

Esteemed speakers, including Dr. Theresita V. Atienza and Dr. Menchita F. Dumlao, highlighted the importance of research, critical thinking, and intellectual property protection. The event also recognized exceptional research papers, such as the “Student Portal for Accommodating Information Dissemination (QCU SPAID),” which won the Best Research Paper award.

Similarly, the College of Engineering organized its first

undergraduate research colloquium, providing opportunities for students to showcase their feasibility and capstone projects. With the theme “PIONEER,” this event highlighted innovation and nurtured engineering education through research. Notable papers, including “BEEMUSA STRAW” and “E-SENSE,” received recognition for their innovative ideas.

QCU’s commitment to forging partnerships was evident in the signing of two significant MOUs. The first MOU, signed with Philippines Business for Education (PBEd) on May 11, 2023, aims to enhance students’ employability through the Jobs Next Training Programs. These programs offer training in various technical-vocational areas, equipping students with valuable skills aligned with industry demands.

The second MOU, signed with Barangay Sta. Lucia last May 22, 2023, focuses on implementing Integrated Extension Programs to address societal challenges and foster sustainable development in the local community.

Furthermore, QCU demonstrated its dedication to quality education by actively

participating in rigorous assessments conducted by the CHED-NCR Regional Quality Assessment Team (RQAT).

These evaluations were conducted to ensure the university’s compliance with the Certificate of Program Compliance (COPC) for its Bachelor of Science in Management Accounting and Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering programs. By subjecting itself to these assessments, QCU showcases its commitment to maintaining high educational standards and continuously improving its academic offerings.

These milestones highlight QCU’s unwavering commitment to excellence in education, research, and community engagement. Through research colloquiums, strategic partnerships, and quality assessments, QCU strives to provide its students with valuable learning experiences, broaden their opportunities, and create a positive impact in society.embark on their professional journeys.

Nightless dreamers

Chasing livelihood and education, the nights seamlessly blend into the days for a group of resilient individuals. Despite the fatigue from a long day’s work, they refuse to be deterred from cracking open their books and acing their exams. These students, who face the hardships of working to meet their daily needs, leave an indelible mark on their path to success—a mark that will accompany them throughout their lives. Their stories prove that success is a personal journey that unfolds at its own pace.

Quezon City University (QCU) recently celebrated the graduation of Batch Pinagtibay on June 27, where the accomplishments of three employees shone brightly. These employees, who juggled their roles at QCU with their studies, successfully obtained degrees in Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSIE) and Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship (BSENT).

One of the inspiring graduates is Alfie C. Tano, who obtained a BSENT degree. As a security guard on QCU’s main

campus, he shared his story of the challenges he faced while working and studying. Tano mentioned the difficulties of being an employee and a student, especially as he had a family to support. He expressed, “...walang ibang sumusuporta sakin ako lang din nagpapaaral sa sarili ko pinapaaral ko pa dalawa kong anak,” Tano expressed his gratitude to the Quezon City Government and the Scholar ng Bayan program, which assisted him in pursuing his studies. Despite the hurdles along the way, Tano remains undeterred, with plans to take either a civil service or NAPOLCOM exam, and also considering the entrepreneurship examination later this year.

Emiberto M. Fernandez Jr., a PF admin staff member, pursued his BSIE degree while working at QCU. He mentioned that balancing his studies and employment was manageable during his first two years, as his classes were scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while his work started at 6 p.m. and ended at 9 p.m. However, the journey became rough during his third and fourth years,

as certain subjects clashed with his work schedule. Fernandez acknowledged, “So mahirap, priority ko pa rin yung trabaho [kaysa] sa aral kaya ‘yun.. paunti-unti hanggang sa matapos. Kahit 6 years matapos, natapos din,” His plans for the future are contingent upon his responsibilities towards his family.

Another remarkable graduate who excelled in both academics and the professional realm is Charlez Jourdan G. Atentar, an Administrative Support Assistant in the BSENT program. He emphasized the difficulties faced by full-time workers pursuing education simultaneously. Atentar revealed that sometimes he struggled to concentrate in class due to hunger and exhaustion after long hours

of duty, followed by evening classes from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nevertheless, these obstacles failed to dampen his determination to achieve his dreams. He remains motivated, fueled by the knowledge that his efforts are dedicated to providing a better future for his family. “For me, my family is the source of strength in overcoming life’s challenges,” he stated.

These stories serve as a wellspring of inspiration for students who are currently juggling work and education, as well as for those who bear the responsibility of providing for their families. These individuals prove that the financial demands of education are not insurmountable barriers for those willing to persevere and strive harder for their aspirations. Q
