Columbus is the capital and the largest city in Ohio. It’s the 14th largest city in the United States. It is named after the explorer Christopher Columbus and was founded in 1812.

The city charter provides a Mayor-Council form of government with a full-time mayor serving a fouryear term and seven part-time council members elected at large to four-year terms at two-year intervals. Columbus is the seat of government forFranklin County and is the capital of the State of Ohio. Ohio has 18 of the Electoral College’s 538 Votes.

The largest university is The Ohio State University, however, there are approximately 11 other excellent higher learning institutions to choose from.

Columbus is located in the center of the state, halfway between the Ohio River and Lake Erie. Columbus is 187 miles west of Pittsburgh, 326 miles east of Chicago, 142 miles south of Cleveland, and 111 miles northeast of Cincinnati.
History
The first structures near Columbus’ city center were not the high-rise buildings you see there today, but earthen mounds constructed by the Mound Builder’s Indian tribe. In the 1700s the first European explorers entered the Midwest using the rivers as thoroughfares. The first settler in what is now known as Columbus was Lucas Sullivant, a surveyor from Kentucky, who surveyed Franklinton. When Ohio became a state in 1803, the first capital was in Chillicothe. Not many years later, the capital was moved to a more central location, Franklinton, which was known as the “Buggy Capital of the World” in 1880, because of the more than 20 companies producing horse-drawn carriages at the time.
