REALTORS® across Canada work together to ensure that our Members of Parliament are making decisions that benefit homeowners across our country. One program that REALTORS® at a local and national level are currently advocating on is the existing Home Buyers’ Tax Credit (HBTC). This program helps homebuyers with some of the costs associated with buying a new home. However, the HBTC needs to be enhanced in order to catch up with current costs facing home buyers. REALTORS® are advocating for the current $750 non-refundable tax credit to be replaced with a $2,500 non-refundable tax credit. An enhanced HBTC would enable more Canadians to achieve their dreams of home ownership. REALTORS® are also urging the federal government to take regional differences into consideration when implementing nation-wide programs that affect home buyers. In particular, the “stress test” has had unintended consequences in many balanced markets, like Nova Scotia, making it harder for millennials and middle-class families to purchase homes. REALTORS® continue to advocate for the government to review “one-size-fits-all” housing policies that impact all buyers in Canada.
