With a provincial election in the books, and a federal election on the horizon, housing has been on the minds of all candidates. Inventory and vacancy rates are extremely low across our province, and more Nova Scotians are having difficulty finding a place to call home. REALTORS® believe everyone should have a safe, income-accessible place to live. Housing is a spectrum – from community/social housing to long term care, rentals, and new builds – we need to ensure the entire housing spectrum is healthy in order for our entire community to have homes. Here are the top three housing issues that REALTORS® believe will make the most impact during the 2021 federal election: • Housing Supply and Infrastructure - Canada has the lowest number of housing units per 1,000 residents of any G7 country. Supply hasn’t kept up with population growth. To tackle the supply issue, the federal government needs to ensure adequate housing of all types is available for Canadians. • National Housing Roundtable - Canada’s housing challenge is a national problem that demands a national solution. All levels of government need to work together to address supply issues at all levels of the housing spectrum. REALTORS® are calling on the federal government to establish a permanent national housing roundtable bringing together the federal, provincial, and municipal governments along with builders, real estate professionals and civil society organizations. • Affordability and Debt Reduction - For many Canadians, homeownership is out of reach. We need more housing supply, but there are other measures that can help make owning a home more affordable.
