Things to do in the Gateway area... Deep Creek Area

The Deep Creek area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of our favorite places to escape to. Located just 3.3 miles from Bryson City, NC, this area offers many different activities for the entire family. Choose from fishing, horseback riding, hiking, bike riding, camping (front country & back country), picnics, waterfalls and so much more. The Deep Creek Area has it all. Below, we have highlighted a few activities to get you started.

DEEP CREEK TRAIL

Deep Creek Trail

The Deep Creek Trail is just under 15 miles in length and runs from the Deep Creek area of Great Smoky Mountains National Park all the way up to where it intersects US Hwy 441 at approximately 5,000 feet of elevation. However, our recommendation is to take advantage of the lower end of this great trail near Bryson City. Here, you’ll find 3 great waterfalls (Juney Whank, Toms Branch & Indian Creek) all within an easy hike of one another. The trail follows Deep Creek along a relatively flat stretch that allows for just about anyone to enjoy a relaxing stroll along the crystal clear waters. T O M S B R A N C H FA L L S Toms Branch Falls might just be our favorite set of falls in the Deep Creek Area. Located just 0.1 mile from the parking area, Toms Branch is the easiest accessible waterfall here. The hike is along the easiest portion of Deep Creek Trail and will take you right in front of the falls. Here, you’ll be able to sit on one of the convenient wooden benches and take in the great view of Toms Branch Falls as it tumbles down the rocks for approximately 80 feet. What we love best about this waterfall is the unique way that it splashes directly into Deep Creek below. In the summer months, you’ll see water tubers floating by as they cool off in the ice cold waters. Tuckasegee Area

The Tuckasegee Area is a gorgeous place to explore. This part of Jackson County can be some of the most adventurous around. The Tuckaseegee River is the center piece of this small community, and is made most popular for it’s world-class fly-fishing waters. But, if fishing isn’t your thing do not worry, the Tuckaseegee area offers many other activities like: hiking, boating, historical sites, picnic areas, rafting and much more. Below, you’ll notice a couple of unique areas that we suggest taking advantage of while you’re here.

E A S T L A P O RT E R I V E R AC C E S S A R E A We recommend the East LaPorte River Access Area for the entire family. Here you’ll find multiple activities like picnicking, volleyball and trout fishing. This rec area is conveniently located just off of N.C.-107 on the banks of the ‘Tuck’. We suggest stopping here for a relaxing picnic by the river or under the convenient shelter (restrooms are available). After your picnic, try your luck at fishing the ‘Hatchery Supported’ trout waters here. Catch Brook, Brown & Rainbow Trout!

East Laporte River Access Area

Judaculla Rock is a highly recommended historic site to visit. The site focuses on a large soapstone that juts out of the earth near the banks of Caney Fork. It won’t seem like much when you pull up to the dead end of Judaculla Road, but what you will see on the opposing side of the rock’s face is really something special. Take the few steps leading down from the dead end and small parking area. What you will see on the rock will not jump out at you, but take a closer look (without climbing on the rock of course) at the indentions and carvings. The markings are very elaborate k and to consider that they are 2 - 3 thousand years old is incredible. Even Judaculla Roc the Cherokee Indians believe this site pre-dates their inhabitance in this area of Caney Fork, just outside of Tuckasegee. There are many legends about this place, but one of the most popular is from the Cherokee people. It’s the story of a slant-eyed monster named ‘Tsul’kalu’. We’ll leave you hanging there!
