Hiking & Backpacking

What better time to hike along a classic Smoky Mountain stream than summertime? We recommend taking some time to escape to Great Smoky Mountains National Park this summer to take advantage of all the activities that are associated with our ‘Play’ category. After all, you’re located at the ‘Gateway to the Smokies.’

Bradley Fork Trail The Bradley Fork Trail is an easy trail to hike and is highly recommended to the entire family. The hike will take you alongside ‘Bradley Fork,’ a classic Smokies stream. With crystal clear water and a healthy population of rainbow trout, the possibilities along this stream are endless. Work up a good sweat and take a dip in the ice cold water for a quick cool down, or pack your fishing pole and wade along the shores for a challenging day of trout fishing. We would like to recommend accessing this trail from the ‘Smokemont Campground’ hike parking area (see directions below). Head out along the trail for 1.7 miles to the ‘Smokemont Campground Loop Trail’ access on your left. Here, head down to Bradley Fork and walk across the footbridge. Take in the scenery for a while then simply turn around and head back from the direction you came.

Local Directions: From Cherokee, NC take U.S. Highway-441 North for approx. 7.1 miles to a bridge on your right over the Oconaluftee River. You should see signs for Smokemont Campground as you approach 7 miles. Go over the bridge and take a left towards the campground. Continue working your way along this paved road passing the Oconaluftee River Ranger Station on your left and continue towards “Loop D” (bearing straight and to the right all the way back). Once you have found Loop D, you’ll work your way around to where you can see a small parking area at the trail head for Bradley Fork Trail. Park here and pick up the trail (see brown national forest mileage sign) on the creek bank and a gate over the Forest Road/trail.
