Hiking & Backpacking

Escape the heat of summer and head into the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park via ‘Lakeview Drive’ or what the locals call, ‘The Road to Nowhere.’ This unique area of the Park offers excellent hiking and backpacking trails to explore. Below, we introduce you to one of our favorites.

Noland Creek Trail The Noland Creek Trail can be easily accessed just before Lakeview Drive’s only bridge crossing. Take the short connector trail down to where the trail give you the option of heading North and deeper into the park, or South towards Fontana Lake and backcountry campsite #66. We recommend heading South towards the Lake for a short and easy 2 mile hike (roundtrip). The hike follows Noland Creek the entire distance, where it eventually empties into the lake. You’ll cross numerous bridges along the way, offering great views of this classic Smoky Mountain stream. Take a picnic lunch, your fishing gear (NC/TN fishing license) and camera for a most unique Smoky Mountain adventure.

Local Directions: From downtown Bryson City, NC take Everett Street across the railroad tracks and continue West via what is now ‘Fontana Road’, leaving town. Drive for 7.9 miles crossing into Great Smoky Mountains National Park via the road dubbed, “The Road to Nowhere” by the local residents of Swain County. At 5.2 miles after passing the Great Smoky Mountains sign for Lake View Drive access you’ll find the parking area (just before the bridge) on the left. This is a large parking area, very capable of accomodating multiple cars and horse trailers.
