Hiking & Backpacking Escape the heat of summer and head into the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park via ‘Lakeview Drive’ or what the locals call, ‘The Road to Nowhere.’ This unique area of the Park offers excellent hiking and backpacking trails to explore. Below, we introduce you to one of our favorites.
Noland Creek Trail The Noland Creek Trail can be easily accessed just before Lakeview Drive’s only bridge crossing. Take the short connector trail down to where the trail give you the option of heading North and deeper into the park, or South towards Fontana Lake and backcountry campsite #66. We recommend heading South towards the Lake for a short and easy 2 mile hike (roundtrip). The hike follows Noland Creek the entire distance, where it eventually empties into the lake. You’ll cross numerous bridges along the way, offering great views of this classic Smoky Mountain stream. Take a picnic lunch, your fishing gear (NC/TN fishing license) and camera for a most unique Smoky Mountain adventure.

From downtown Bryson City, NC take Everett Street across the railroad tracks and continue West via what is now ‘Fontana Road’, leaving town. Drive for 7.9 miles crossing into Great Smoky Mountains National Park via the road dubbed, “The Road to Nowhere” by the local residents of Swain County. At 5.2 miles after passing the Great Smoky Mountains sign for Lake View Drive access you’ll find the parking area (just before the bridge) on the left. This is a large parking area, very capable of accomodating multiple cars and horse trailers.

Waterrock Knob
Located at Milepost 451.2, Waterrock Knob is one of our favorite vantage points along ‘our stretch’ of the Blue Ridge Parkway. From Waterock Knob parking lot take in the amazing views to the Southeast and beyond. Or go over to the Park Ranger Store and take in views of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Cherokee just below you. You do not have to hike the trail to the summit to take in the excellent views of the surrounding mountains but if you’re capable of hiking a fairly strenuous 2.4 mile (roundtrip) trail, then we strongly recommend it. If you can’t make the hike, take a picnic lunch and make use of the multiple tables that are provided in the “mile high” parking area, again, with amazing views.
r i c h l a n d b a l s a m ov e r l o o k Richland Balsam Overlook is a great place to stop in and stretch your legs after a long car ride and take in the views. It just so happens to be the highest point on the entire ‘Blue Ridge Parkway Motor Road’ too! We recommend stopping at this overlook, located at Mile Post 431, for a picture in front of both the incredible view and the large sign located here signifying the relevance of this spot. We are partial to this section of the Parkway due to it’s towering views from high elevations.

Blue Ridge Parkway cont’d... devils courthouse The Devil’s Courthouse Overlook and Trail provides an outstanding vantage point for endless views into the Blue Ridge countryside. We recommend this trail to anyone willing to hike up the steep but mainly paved grade to the summit. It takes anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes depending upon your fitness level. When at the top you will have views of up to four states as well as multiple peaks of prominance both near and far. Be sure to check out the metal plaques that the park has placed at the summit detailing which direction you’re looking in and what it is exactly you’re looking at. This really helps you get a grasp of where you are and how being at over 5700 feet of elevation allows you to see for miles and miles. Also, there is folk lore related to Devil’s Courthouse due to it’s devilish look, and is related to another point of interest on our website, Judaculla Rock. We recommend Graveyard Fields Trail system to the entire family. This is one of the most popular spots on the Parkway so beware of a crowded parking area when you arrive, especially in the Spring/Summer months. It is said that Graveyard Fields got it’s name when a “tremendous wind blow” occurred more than 500 years ago and uprooted the Spruce forest. Over the years the the remaining root stumps and trees rotted leaving behind dirt mounds that resembled a graveyard, and the area has been known as Graveyard Fields ever since. The forest eventually recovered only to be destroyed by a catastrophic fire in 1925. This fire consumed the forest and the ancient mounds. Graveyard Fields offers great hiking, waterfalls, swimming and Graveyard Fields backcountry camping. Be sure to allow for plenty of time to be spent here. We recommend at least a half day to take in all you can!
