THIS FALL With the nights already drawing in it’s time to start thinking about preparing our homes for the coming seasons and the upcoming trends to look out for. TEXT: THERESE KARLSEN PHOTO: TU TU NGUYEN

There are some exciting trends to consider this fall which include some deeper, dark shades for both walls We are welcoming some and accessories, plus some trends back, and invite pared-back naturals and some new and modern bright accents. ones. Sensory-based experiences are a key phrase. We will agree with all the senses. It is not enough to just think that something looks pretty. We have to touch and feel, we need to smell and listen - and we will have trust our gut feeling. Only then can we make interiors we really enjoy. This fall, there is a great focus on senses and well-being above the monotonic minimalist.

TRENDS

Although the colors are marched into our home, nature is still our inspirational source #1. Wood, terracotta, marble, leather, stone and textiles in brown and mustard are not to be missed. Here you can play with forms, textures and techniques. We are totally in love with the pretty nature colours

Trend color over them all - the dusty red throughout the palette spectrum from nude to salmon pink to chinared continues the rest of the year. If dark tones aren’t your thing, then go for this super pretty millennial pink. It’s mood-enhancing, goes with everything, and will work in any room. Feminine, yes, but in dialogue with other, heavier colors, it is strong.

The trend you were in love with last season is officially making it’s grand return—velvet. Considering just how quickly this fall trend took off in 2016, we will admit we are semi-surprised to see it turn back around so quickly, but we definitely aren’t mad about it, and we don’t think you will be either. It’s back and better than ever! The deep, dark colours are also back and better than ever, with a matte and calming stroke your apartment is ready to get snuggled up in.

Vintage takes a delicate and sophisticated turn with soft colours and incredibly detailed patterns. The vintage look is a sentral trend in 2017, and will continue thru out the fall. Vintage is the new modern and with the humdrum of modern lifestyle closing in from all sides, it is quite refreshing to break the monotony by introducing few touches of vintage accessories to our homes.

We have already come a long way into this year and therefore we had to ask one of the biggest fashion - and interior houses on the market for some tips and trend advice. TEXT: IDA ELISE EIDE EINARSDÓTTIR PHOTO: H&M HOME

INTERVIEW

What are the biggest interior trends for 2017? - At H & M Home there is nature that applies and inspiration is taken from the elements earth, water, fire, air and soul. On the one hand, we have the exotic; tropical influences with lots of warm colors and energetic expressions. On the other hand, it is about harmony; Here is the wellbeing and tranquility that governs, a philosophy touch influenced by Japanese and Scandinavian style.

What colors will dominate? - Hot yellowtones, exotic green colors and a range of blue, but also more neutral colors like dusty pink and green. Tone-in-tone is important - dress the entire room in different tones of the same color, like pink, gray or blue. This gives a modern and harmonious expression.

17

What can we take with us from this year? - The authentic is still important, so the influences of crafts continue. Braid curves are central and come in all shapes and colors.

And if you have to invest in one new thing for the home? - New pillowcases! This is an easy and affordable way to renew the impression of home from season to season, and in the spring we have lots of nice variants in current colors and pressures.

Are your upper kitchen cabinets casting a gloomy shadow over your worktop? Is that awkward-to-reach top shelf a no-man’s land? Here are ten good reasons to get rid of the shadows and the unreachable spaces! TEXT: HOUZZ.CO.UK

Consider replacing the units with a whole new entity, or removing them altogether – radical, we know. Eliminating them will not only make the room feel more spacious, it will also free up wall space that can then be used for anything from displaying bold artwork to showcasing statement tiles, or simply left blank for a clean, minimalist feel.

26

However, there is a trade-off, and that’s losing a lot of cupboard space. So how do you embrace this minimalist look while retaining valuable storage? You might have to do a bit of reorganising and decluttering, but let’s face it, how often do you use that cupcake-maker anyway? And we are not saying disregard all wall storage, but simply suggesting you reconsider your options. There are plenty of practical alternatives to unwieldy wall cupboards, as these kitchens demonstrate.

TIPS & TRICKS

REPLACE WITH EASY-TO-REACH OPEN SHELVES The simplest way of retaining plenty of storage in a kitchen that doesn’t have wall units is by adding open shelves. Not only do these provide a practical solution for storing everyday essentials at arm’s length, they create a sense of space and airiness. Paint the wall white, for a light look. Or if you use crisp white glossy tiles behind the shelves, the light will bounce around the space even more and make the room feel super-bright. PHOTO: HO

CREATE CONTRAST Open shelves can also be used to make a design statement when set against a bold, contrasting paint colour. If you have an open-plan kitchen/ living room, consider extending the wall colour into the kitchen to create a living room feel, and add a few decorative objects to the shelves so it doesn’t feel so kitchen-y.

PHOTO: ELISABETH HEIER

27

BUILD IN A LEDGE Leaning frames has become a popular way of displaying artwork without having to make a permanent decision, or a permanent mark on the wall for that matter, so what better way to bring interest to cupboard-free areas? With a useful ledge built along the top of a tall splashback, you’re free to display all your favourites and add a quirky touch at the same time.

PHOTO: SCANDINAVIAN HOMES

ENHANCE NATURAL LIGHT If you live in an end-of-terrace, a semi or a detached house, you might have an exterior wall to work with in your kitchen. If so, consider bringing the outside in with a ‘window splashback’ fitted behind the worktop, so you can enjoy the view (assuming you have one) while you cook. Here, the absence of upper kitchen cabinets allows a beautiful rustic stone wall to create a seamless flow between the interior and exterior, with no visual interruptions. PHOTO: RODRIGUES BODYCOAT ARCHITECTS

28

TIPS & TRICKS

SHOW OFF ARCHITECTUAL FEATURES When you’ve been blessed with the beauty of an exposed brick wall, don’t be tempted to cover it up with kitchen cupboards. Instead, go for aesthetically pleasing items that will complement the rich colours and tones. Bold artwork definitely has a place in the kitchen when it’s chosen carefully to harmonise with its surroundings, and framed in a similar colour to the worktops or units to create cohesion.

PHOTO: JOLSON ARCITECTURE

REMAINING CUPBOARDS OK, so this isn’t technically a wall-cupboard-free kitchen, but the clever use of paint makes the ones that are there barely noticeable. Painted in the same off-white as the wall panelling, the glass-fronted units fade into the background, while the darker colour is continued across the bottom of the unit, so it’s hard to see where the cupboards start or finish. A high shelf adds more opportunity for storage while keeping items out of immediate sight. PHOTO: PLAIN ENGLISH

29

HIGHLIGHT DECORATIVE TILES If you’ve fallen in love with a beautiful wall tile design, then here’s the opportunity to let it shine. Geometric patterns are on trend right now; team them with some bare bulbs and you have yourself a stylish haven. Try hanging a slick pan rack for a hard-working kitchen feel.

PHOTO: TREVOR BROWN ARCHITECT

BOLDER SPLASHBACK Make the most of your cabinet-free wall and go for a bolder and more contraster color or a pattern.. For a subtle yet impressive look, stick to the same tones throughout the kitchen, so the statement wall doesn’t dominate, but simply works with the base units and appliances.

PHOTO: SAN INAZIO KOLOR

30

TIPS & TRICKS

CONSIDER A NEAT ALTERNATIVE Handy nooks are often built into shower enclosures to keep the flooring free of clutter. Similarly, a useful row of inset shelves built behind the worktop will ensure it’s left clear for daily tasks. Here, to make sure the base of each shelf can be cleaned and dusted easily, a thin piece of glass has been cut to fit each nook, while the same paint colour has been used on the walls, shelves and units for a contemporary, streamlined finish.

PHOTO: 102 INTERIORS LTD

COVER A WALL If you’re still craving clear, empty walls but don’t want your items out on display, then opt for a bank of floor-to-ceiling pantry cupboards along one side of the kitchen. This wall of units doesn’t feel as oppressive as upper cabinets, and there’s still room to show off a dazzling tiled feature wall. Win-win!

TRENDS

Just by painting your walls, or getting new furniture, you can incorporate this "trend." Please, take that word with a grain of salt. Unlike fashion, in the interiors world a "trend" can be around for a few years or even decades. Deep greens were all over in the 80s-90s and we're glad to see it coming back. - STUDIO MCGEE

HOMETOUR

It might be the most beautiful home I´ve seen for a very long time. The home of the famous Swedish stylist and designer, Annaleena Leino-Karlsson. I have been following her blog for years and I remember so well when she moved with her family to Stockholm, rented a house (and the rental house made it to the magazines as well of course) while this one was built. And it all seems to be such a short while ago. But here it is, featured together with an interview of Annaleena in Residence Magazine. Photography Kristofer Johnsson / Styling Annaleena Leino-Karlsson

We are on Ekerö just a few miles from town, but the open fields I passed right after Drottningholms Castle on the way here urged me to immediately pull down the car window, raise the music and enjoy being in the country. Annaleena is in her office in camel-colored linnen jacket and looks out over the harbor in Ekerö sjöstad. In the cool, next to the light therapeutic new building next door, her baby Anna Lena Interiors are taking shape. “My husband is from Bohuslän, so Mälaren is just a small clay puddle, but I can not help thinking it’s a little magical to have my workplace here among the swan families,” says Annaleena. It’s not the first time that the Finnish-born stylist and blogger Annaleena glances at the door of her styling home. In the same vein as she packed her big family and left the self-contained villa in Varberg to get closer to the capital and invest in her business.

39

MOVING AROUND Shortly afterwards, the team knocked on the door of the temporary hired village at Färingsö. After looking at countless plots on the island they joined and the real house project was started. Soon the tasteful concrete house was in place in the small village of Troxhammar. When Annaleena thinks back on what sites they were buying unseen before they instead decided to rent the village, she was very pleased that they, as well, learned their way before they started. “When we moved here, I had no relation whatsoever to the place, just knew we wanted to eat some Halland feeling and true forest. Today, I own the island emotionally, the kids love their school and I can not imagine staying anywhere else. To go from town, drive across the bridge and see the castle appear as an unreal scene is like an on and off button between the job and everything else in life. Such a natural antistress factor. “

PERFECT LUXURY At the end of the upper corridor, Annaleenas and Jonas are perfectly lovely bedrooms. As a luxury hotel suite, larger than a normal size one on the south ore. The line of sight where we stand is amazing. “I am aware of the luxury of having such a large bedroom, but the fact is that we really use it. Our family moves like a small flock, we like to be in the same place. It’s not uncommon that my three youngest still sneak in and lay down here at night, “Annaleena says, nodding to the mattresses with black overlays that lean against the wall. This is Leino-Karlsson’s second house building and they already know that it will not be the last. They took a lot from the house in Varberg. As it may be tempting to build nice spaces that are not used for who wants a library that nobody is in? “We will of course bring some stuff from this house as well. It must mean that the third house will be absolutely perfect ?! “

THE SHOWROOM We are leaving the harbor to take the car ten minutes away from casa Leino-Karlsson, we take the road to Annaleena’s dream project. Wallmounted with the office she shares with five creative freelance colleagues, she is recently taken care of turning to her new showroom: Annaleena interiors. “Here I’m going to conceptualize all my creativity, today my platform is a lot more than the innocent blog I started over ten years ago. This will be a physical extension of it. A calm oasis your husband will come for inspiration. Everything I put here is available to buy or order, and the feeling should be like a complete home. “ We take the stairs up on the roof, squint against the sun and step onto the beautiful stone roof. Annaleena shows the new outdoor kitchen is and where the new chairs Tio from Massproductions will stand.

It might be the most beautiful home I´ve seen for a very long time. Minimalistic, contemporary and with a airy, clean feeling no one masters as well as Annaleena. She doesn’t only design her own furniture, but the house is also designed by her, with her husband doing the technical part of it. The show room looks great and if you love minimalism and the fresh feeling as much as I do, you really have to go see this. I got so inspired by her work and to know that she is this unbelievably creative soul and has the ability to come up with all these ideas, and then actually going thru with them and bringingthem to life. Her furnituring is not just furniture, it’s art.
