The Arc’teryx Beta AR is a Gore-Tex shell Jacket that is so light it only weighs an astounding 1lb, it packs away compactly and the AR stands for All Rounder so is built to withstand the most extreme alpine conditions. We have certainly had the weather recently to give the jacket a true test, with the second lockdown has come the second instalment of daily walks round our village, now it wasn’t windy but the rain was teeming and I didn’t care, the jacket kept me both warm and more importantly dry. Now it is made to withstand wind, rain and snow with the Beta AR being made from Gore-Tex Pro, a material they developed in collaboration with Gore to deliver maximum durability. I haven’t been able to test this in the snow but it has an inbuilt collar that is separate from the hood and will block out these conditions. The brimmed hood is helmet compatible. This is very useful if you are into snow sports, mountaineering, or any other activity where you need both a helmet for protection and a hood to keep you dry. In general, my size of jacket is a large but I found the sizing a little baggier to my normal fit so you may want to consider this before purchase, however it was so comfortable, you feel so mobile with no restrictions across the entire jacket this is made for trekking. When you are really getting accosted by the heavens you will find drawstrings practically everywhere across the jacket to pull it tight and seal yourself away from the elements. This is a big statement, but so it should be with the £500 price, this is hands down the best rainproof jacket I have ever worn. If you are an active outdoorsman save up and purchase this jacket because I have never reviewed a jacket like it.
