Hi all, Is anyone else amazed that we are already in July? The world is still full of uncertainty for many people, but we are slowly returning to something that feels a little more familiar with recreational venues reopening and our highstreets coming back to life. With so much time to re-evaluate what is important to us, now is a great time to focus on the things we love, in this month’s magazine we have the pleasure of bringing you some premium sports and leisure gear including the high performing Polar Grit X multisport watch and the extremely entertaining Blazepod system.

ROK EspressoGC Espresso makers come in all shapes and sizes and although the ROK EspressoGC might look like a giant bottle opener, it has a real charm about it and deserves pride of place in the kitchen, made from a robust, high-strength metal alloy that is guaranteed for ten years.

The tamper and splitter are made from plastic which isn’t ideal and doesn’t hold the same quality as the rest of the machine so you might want to hide them in the drawer.

The ROK is 100% manual, this means it can travel with you but you will need a flat surface to operate, it can come camping as long as there is a little table to use, hot water will obviously also need to be available.

It is easy to use, simply add the coffee grounds to the stainless-steel filter, lock it into the main body and add hot water before hand-pulling your shot by pressing down on the two handles. This is a two-handed job and requires a degree of pressure, it isn’t too taxing but might put some people off especially first thing in the morning, on the plus side it counts towards your daily exercise.

Once the shot is pulled you can then add foamed milk, steamed milk, hot water or simply drink it as a single shot like a hardcore Italian. The re-engineered pressure chamber now delivers twice the performance using BPA-free glass composites and results in a good extraction with crema with minimal effort, free from electricity, pods, capsules and filters it saves on energy and single use waste.

The two handles can easily provide enough pressure to pull the espresso, it will need preheating, this should take just a few minutes and it is worth doing to avoid losing too much temperature during the process. The ROK EspressoGC is going to appeal to those who are happy to put in a bit of time to find the best combination of methods to get that perfect espresso, there is certainly a learning curve with this machine but once you have the technique down the espresso produced is well worth the effort.

I have always had a theory that everyone can enjoy exercise they just need to find the right version for them, if lifting weights sounds boring or the thought of joining a gym class fills you with dread don’t despair, there are loads of ways to keep healthy and have fun all from the comfort of your own home.

The BlazePod kit is a great way to inject some fun into a training session and work your brain out at the same time, they come in the form of light up touch sensitive pods that get you moving around with visual signals. There are various kits to choose from, but we are taking a closer look at the Trainer Standard Kit, this comes with six pods, six straps, suction cups and a charging base which all work alongside the BlazePod app.

These clever pods have an auto connection distance of 40 meters, this might limit some training exercises but is more than suitable for interval training, circuits, boxing, martial arts and much more within the home. The pods have inbuilt RGB LED lights with eight colour options, the durable and weatherproof (IP65 rated and UV protected) design means they can be used inside and out, they can be activated by your hands, feet, heavy wall balls and boxing gloves. The setup is user friendly, no buttons or moving parts to worry about, they stack up on top of the charging base, light up green when they are ready to go and will last up to 12 hours from one charge depending on the exercise, if you are using them at home the battery life is more than acceptable but personal trainers may find they will need to charge more often.

There are lots of pre-made workouts available on the app, ranging from reaction challenges, agility, strength, decision making and more. If you are in a predefined activity or a custom activity that contains “number of players” in the settings, then you can click on the plus icon to add more players if you’d like to have more than 2 (the max number of players is the amount of Pods minus 1. Custom exercises can be created in the app from the easy-to-select light logics which lets you generate endless visual cues to personalise your training, the straps and suction cups let you arrange the pods in a wide range of configurations and height levels.

The only issues we found were that when they are simply placed on the floor the lightweight design means they are easy to push out of position, this can be used in your favour however as it then requires more concentration and precise movements, they were also slower to react with very sweaty hands so keep a towel close by to wipe off between sets. The BlazePod kit is a lot of fun, dashing around tapping the pods feels like you are participating in a 1990’s game show and getting a friend or the kids involved makes it even more enjoyable, it switches your brain on as well as your muscles whilst the app can track your progress and show you how much you have progressed.

SMOK Nord 2

The Nord 2 from SMOK is an updated version of their very popular original kit the Nord, inside the kit you will find the Nord 2 Device, 1 x Nord 2 RPM Pod Cartridge, 1 x Nord 2 Nord Pod Cartridge, USB cable and manual.

The first thing you notice is the increase in power with a 1500mAH battery capacity it has more powerful than its predecessor enabling up to 40w of power with the correct coil, with a coil resistance range of 0.3Ω to 3.0Ω. They’ve also added a little OLED screen with which you are able to dial your preferred wattage up to 40w and the battery capacity is upped to that of the original. You can also take advantage of different coils, to give you a varied vaping experience.

Measuring in at 95mm by 30.5mm with a body thickness of 20mm and with a pod attached the weight is around 80g, the Nord 2 is slightly thicker and a tiny bit taller than the original Nord. The device is made, primarily, of a zinc alloy and plastic, and both the battery (body) and the pods are of good quality with a great design and manufacture with a hand comfort that matches it's predecessor.

The battery life was good around 4 to 4.5 hours at 12w using the Nord 0.8Ω coil and 3.5 hours using the 0.4Ω at 22w.

Edna & Harvey: The Breakout is a point-and-click adventure game that was originally released in 2008. The game has now had a complete overhaul with an Anniversary Edition that comes with an updated art style and bigger resolution.

So, if you haven’t played the original, who are Edna and Harvey?

Well, you start the story as a young girl called Edna who finds herself in a padded cell, with only the company of her stuffed rabbit, Harvey. While not remembering much about herself, she’s sure that being imprisoned there is a mistake. With Harvey’s help, she starts her quest to break out.

As you plan your escape you will find you have the option to use the original style of the game which I thought still stood itself in good stead with a healthy drop of nostalgia thrown in.

I am not going to spoil the journey for you, but what I will say is that it took me two days to complete and I enjoyed the art and gameplay from start to finish and didn’t come across any glitches apart from sometimes items being a pain to click on.

Sonicsmith Squaver P1+

The Squaver P1+ from sonicsmith is a Semi-modular, audio controlled analog synth pedal.

This single oscillator with a 3 voice monophonic audio controlled synth (ACS) is the closest you can get between the performer’s instrument/voice to an analogue synth sound. The + version expands what the former Squaver P1 started but gives it a variable gate, wider sweep PWM and a smoother ENV. Expressing the instrumentalist's performance to an analogue synthesizer according to its frequency, amplitude and articulation is a an art of its own. Inside the Squaver P1+ is the ACO100 oscillator chip with its audio input and synth output. A square and sawtooth waves mix knob is provided on the front panel as well as an OSC / SUBS mix and SYNTH / SRC mix knobs. The Squaver P1+ pulls the whole analogue audio - synth - CV performance together. Along with two envelope followers that can be assigned to either the VCA, PWM or the VCF and you still have all the important CV ins and outs on the front panel to create your own patches.

The input preamp is powerful and clean with +40dB gain to accommodate line level sources, electric instruments as well as dynamic mics. Their new patent awarded auto-adjusting filter can work in 2 pole or 4 pole if more help with frequency detection is needed. The expression pedal input can be assigned to either the VCF cutoff frequency, octave CV or harmony CV via the Expression destination 4 position switch as well as to any other destination via its dedicated "Exp CV" output. The ENV is generated from an ENV follower that can extract the dynamics from the main audio input and a second ENV follower extracts dynamics from the side-chain audio input. The user can then switch between the two main ENV via a footswitch.

The PT10 is a helpful little torch perhaps best suited for short uses on the high setting due to the temperature, we would keep it in the car for emergencies as it is so easy to charge inside the vehicle.

BAM Bamboo Clothing Roam Bamboo Merino Hoody Comfort is an important element in all BAM Bamboo Clothing’s garments and the Roam Hoody is no exception, available in Light Grey Marl or Marine Green Marl, this top is constructed from a blend of 60 % merino wool and 40% bamboo which results in a beautifully soft material.

LED Lenser MH8 LED Head Torch

The head torch is an underrated piece of equipment, lighting up the darkness directly in front of you, freeing up your hands and making you look like a competent outdoorsman even if you can’t peg in a tent.

The MH8 from LED Lenser is a highly comfortable head torch with two straps, one that wraps around the head and another that goes over the top of the head to keep it in place, the straps are very soft and feel gentle against the skin, ideal for long periods of wear. The back of the torch has foam padding which rests lightly on your forehead, it is slightly raised to allow for a small amount of airflow and reduces the amount of surface area that is in contact with the skin.

FeuerDesign Mayon BBQ There is something so enjoyable about cooking and eating outside, away from the screens and distractions with the added bonus of no one telling you off for dropping crumbs on the floor, however a face full of smoke and standing by the BBQ whilst your friends chill out at the table isn’t as fun.

The Mayon Table Top Grill from FeuerDesign is a smoke free BBQ that can be safely placed on the table, allowing you and your guests to all participate in the cooking. The Mayon comes in five designs, red, white/cream, yellow, anthracite and stainless steel, measuring up at 18.5cm high with a 35cm diameter it is compact, with the size it is recommended for 3-4 people.

The Mayon is reasonably lightweight for a grill of this size at 3.5kg and comes with a strong carry bag with long handles for maximum portability. The Akkubetriebenem Fan Motor is an included optional extra, this adjusted fan helps to speed up the heating process and helps get the BBQ to reach its top temperature in as little as five minutes. The coal basket is used to prevent drips of grease and reduce the smoke thanks to the ventilation system, the idea is that the heat from the basket spreads outwards onto the grill instead of using uncovered coals directly beneath the entire grill.

There are some included silicone tongs but the quality of these are not great so you may prefer to use your own. We found the BBQ easy to set up, there was a noticeable reduction in smoke which made it much more pleasant to sit around, the BBQ heated up quickly however the max temperature is lower than a traditional grill, the heat was lower on the outer edges of the grill, this can be true for regular BBQs too.

The Mayon provides a much gentler cooking style, this means you can be waiting for your food a little longer than normal, however, this can benefit some foods especially thinner cuts, veg and my personal favourite, Halloumi.

The Mayon is best suited for small gatherings, if you enjoy regular BBQs the slower cooking time might become tedious however the reduction in smoke and covered coal basket makes for a safer, cleaner cooking experience.

UniTerra Nomad Lever Machine Redefined The first impression of the Nomad is that it wouldn’t look out of place in the Tate Modern, it isn’t obvious what this quirky little machine is for, but it is in fact a manual coffee machine, all you need is coffee and hot water for a portable caffeine fix.

Unlike other manual coffee makers the Nomad is rather sizable at 17 x 17 x 15cm and weighs 1.18 Kg, it has a convenient carry handle but it is probably best suited for camping, holidays or setting up in the office rather than picnics, hiking or any other occasions when you might want to travel lighter.

The Nomad comes in Paris Red, Silk White, Luminescent Green and Cobalt Blue, with a combination of metal and plastic components, ensuring durability on the most important areas and saving weight where it can. It uses a seesaw motion where the small lever operates two tiny piston water pumps, the pressure builds up over a few movements, the gage on the top of the machine will indicate the pressure, once it gets between 8 and 10 bars it is ready to go.

Portable espresso makers are all well and good but if the coffee isn’t up to scratch it’s better to have no coffee at all, thankfully, after a few practises we were able to produce a great espresso complete with a rich crema, better than some mechanical machines we have seen. This is thanks to the removable True Crema Valve which compensates for grinds and tamping variations to assure a perfect emulsification of beneficial oils (their words not ours), for experienced coffee makers the valve can be left to one side but this will mean grinding and tamping techniques will be more critical.

The instructions are easy to follow, the only issue we found was that the spout is set quite low which means the espresso needs to be collected in an espresso cup and transferred into a taller mug if you want to make an Americano. The more we used the Nomad the more we were impressed, if you love your coffee but don’t want to spend ages fussing with a machine this could be a great little addition to your home, the fact that it is also portable is a welcome bonus.

I have a bit of a weird thing, I’m not sure if there’s a medical term for it but if I have to stand still for too long I get very light headed and can faint, this has happened during school assemblies, waiting for a band to come on (for some reason dancing is ok) and queueing for the latest harry potter book, its odd, so a lot of the time if I have to stand still for a long time (and can get away with it) I will simply sit on the floor.

Now, this isn’t always possible, ever seen the state of the floor by the stage at the festival, it’s a biohazard, this is where something like the Walkstool Comfort would be convenient. The Walkstool Comfort comes in four sitting height options, 45, 55, 65 and 75cm (the seat size also increases with the height), we received the 55cm to test out, it weighs 900g, can take up to 225kg in weight and has a 37.5cm seat.

Manufactured in Sweden, this stool has a lightweight construction and comes with a mesh carry bag, this can be tucked in a bag or attached to a belt or worn over the shoulder, ideal for quick sessions of sitting before moving on. The telescopic legs are made from a lightweight aluminium and easily slide out, the pointed rubber feet offer a stable seat on most surfaces, indoors or out. There is also the option of not extending the legs out, I just needed to use my feet for balance, putting you at a lower height if needed, closer to the picnic selection perhaps.

The red buttons to retract the legs are easy to locate, you need to give them a reasonably hard push or poke your nail in there a bit and then they slide away easily. The seat is made from a strong mesh material, it has enough flexibility in it so the edges don’t dig into your legs, you can sit happily for extended periods of time, the mesh is also breathable, I don’t really want to go into details here but no one likes a hot bot. The Walkstool Comfort is a handy piece of gear, you can take a break to appreciate the view during a trek, give your legs a break whilst waiting for the next band to come on stage or take a comfy seat whilst fishing, it is so versatile.
